When she reached him, she stood over him, casting him in vague shadow. Slowly, the angle of her neck eased, and she met his eyes with a look he could only describe as haunted. “I can’t do it.”

Unit 09: Amazing Fact About Nature

One fact about nature that has always been fascinating is the communication between plants. Many believe that plants do not have intelligence. Thus, they do not communicate. However, Acacia Tree is a family of trees that developed a defensive system to warn nearby Acacia trees of danger (Black & Petersen, 2014). Acacias are umbrella-shaped trees often seen on African safaris (Black & Petersen, 2014).

It is often referred to as “thorn trees” because of the long, straight thorns it has on the branches as a defence system against browsing herbivores (Black & Petersen, 2014). Nevertheless, the thorns can only limit over-grazing and cannot stop the animals from feeding, so the chemical defence system comes to play (Black & Petersen, 2014).

            Wouter Van Hoven, a zoologist from Pretoria University, discovered that when Acacia’s leaves are being chewed, the tree will produce high doses of tannin in its leaves; Tannin is a toxin that is dangerous and lethal to animals (Nassrulla, 2021). Simultaneously, the tree will send a distress signal to nearby trees by releasing ethylene gas that can travel up to 45 meters (“Acacia,” 2022). According to scientists, trees in a forest can be connected underground through fungal networks, and this phenomenon is called the “wood-wide web” (“Acacia,” 2022). Trees use this system to transmit a signal that alarms the presence of disease, drought or attacks from animals and insects (“Acacia,” 2022). After the other Acacia trees receive the distress signal, it only takes about 15 minutes for the trees to increase the tannin level in their foliage (Nassrulla. 2021).

Furthermore, mutualism, the type of symbiosis relationship, is also utilized by the Acacia. Tribes of biting ants would benefit from the trees by the hollow bulb as shelter on the base of the thorns and the nectar and sap produced by the trees (Nassrulla. 2021). In return, the biting ants will defend the Acacias by attacking the feeding herbivores (Black & Petersen, 2014).

Although Acacia’s defence system is robust, it could not stop the feeding completely, as the browsers have learned the pattern. Giraffes, the herbivore that feeds on Acacias, common in safaris, adapted to the “alarm system” and understands the distance that the ethylene gas can travel (“Acacia,” 2022). So, giraffes often would feed on one out of ten Acacia trees and would not feed on trees that are placed downwind (Black & Petersen, 2014). Other herbivores, such as the Kudu Antelope, do not have much to feed on besides Acacia leaves and would continue to eat until the tannin triggers the metabolism reaction, causing many deaths of the Kudu around specific ranches (Black & Petersen, 2014).

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) led a bipartisan majority of Senators in calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to continue to use America’s influence to push back against the International Criminal Courts’ recent politically motivated decision to illegally and unfairly pursue alleged war crimes investigations against the State of Israel.

The letter states in part:

“The ICC does not have legitimate territorial jurisdiction in this case. As articulated by State Department Spokesman Ned Price in response to this ICC decision, ‘the United States has always taken the position that the court’s jurisdiction should be reserved for countries that consent to it, or that are referred by the U.N. Security Council.’ Israel is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, and therefore has not consented to the ICC’s jurisdiction. Furthermore, ICC rules prohibit it from prosecuting cases against the citizens of a country with a robust judicial system willing and able to prosecute atrocity crimes committed by its personnel and officials. The ICC’s mandate should not supersede Israel’s robust judicial system, including its military justice system.”  

After sending the letter, Senators Portman and Cardin released the following statement: “We are again pleased that so many of our Senate colleagues joined us on this important effort to push back against the politically motivated persecution of Israel. We commend Secretary Blinken’s statements condemning the ICC’s decision and we urge the Biden Administration to partner with Congress to work together in this effort. The ICC has no jurisdiction over disputed territories and this decision creates a dangerous precedent that undermines the purposes for which the court was founded. This effort is discriminatory against Israel and will serve to make a lasting solution, based on direct negotiations between the two parties, more difficult to achieve.”

La primavera è abbondantemente arrivata, sugli alberi crescono nuove foglie verdi e sbocciano fiori. Tra gli odori che si sentono in questo periodo, oltre a quello del glicine, c’è quello dell’erba tagliata: a molti piace, forse perché ricorda primavere ed estati felici del passato, ad altri no, ma quel che è certo è che l’erba non lo produce per noi. Secondo gli scienziati, gli odori che le piante emettono in condizioni di stress – cioè quando sta succedendo loro qualcosa di negativo per la propria salute (come essere mangiate o avere poca acqua) – sono un modo per allertare altre piante o alcuni animali di quello che sta succedendo loro. Nelle parole dell’ecologo americano Jack Schultz, una delle prime persone a capire che le piante comunicano tra loro, l’odore dell’erba tagliata è «l’erba che grida “aiuto!”».

Le piante sono tantissime e gli studi sui modi di comunicare tra loro e con altri esseri viventi ancora limitati, quindi non sappiamo precisamente che tipo di segnali emettano il loglio (Lolium perenne), l’erba fienarola (Poa pratensis) e la festuca rossa (Festuca rubra commutata), tra le più comuni specie di graminacee che si trovano nei prati, quando vengono tagliate. In generale però abbiamo capito che non potendo muoversi né produrre suoni, per “dire” qualcosa ad altri esseri viventi le piante emettono composti organici volatili: sostanze chimiche che hanno una tendenza a evaporare e che possono essere percepite dai chemiorecettori del nostro olfatto. È un meccanismo che si è affinato con l’evoluzione. È la ragione per cui le piante aromatiche e le rose, per esempio, hanno un buon odore. Quelli che conosciamo meglio servono per attirare gli insetti, mentre altri hanno la stessa funzione dei feromoni negli animali: sono diretti ad altre piante della stessa specie di quella che li emette.

In questa conferenza TED Jack Schultz spiega alcuni meccanismi di comunicazione propri delle piante e i suoi studi per imparare a capirli; cita l’erba tagliata al minuto 3:53.

Gli scienziati chiamano le sostanze odorose prodotte dalle piante “composti organici volatili biogenici”, o BVOC. L’odore dell’erba tagliata è causato da uno di essi. Molti altri (per esempio quelli emessi da una pianta di mais quando è infestata da un parassita, come spiega Schultz) non li sentiamo perché sono prodotti in concentrazioni troppo basse per essere percepiti dall’olfatto umano, ma sufficienti per i sensi degli insetti e per i nasi dei cani.

Sono stati condotti studi dettagliati per capire con precisione che funzione svolgono queste sostanze e il modo in cui vengono prodotte. È stato fatto, ad esempio, con il tabacco. Quando un bruco si mette a mangiare le sue foglie, la pianta emette un tipo di BVOC che in inglese viene chiamato “composto volatile delle foglie verdi” (GLV) e così attira gli insetti del genere Geocoris che sono predatori dei bruchi. Nel 2010 è stato scoperto che peraltro il tipo di GLV diffuso quando le foglie sono mangiate dai bruchi è diverso da quello prodotto quando una lama taglia le foglie, e attira maggiormente gli insetti Geocoris.

Un’altra specie di pianta di cui sono stati studiati i meccanismi di comunicazione tramite i BVOC è una specie del genere Acacia diffusa in Africa: all’inizio degli anni Novanta lo zoologo sudafricano Wouter Van Hoven scoprì che quando vengono masticate, le foglie della pianta producono tannino, una sostanza tossica a seconda della sua concentrazione, e diffondono nell’aria l’etilene; quest’ultimo fa sì che le foglie delle piante vicine, in un raggio di quasi 50 metri, si mettano a loro volta a produrre tannino nel giro di 5-10 minuti. Se ne accorse dopo che circa tremila kudu (un tipo di antilope) chiusi in una vasta zona recintata morirono improvvisamente: tutte le foglie che avevano a disposizione nell’area in cui erano chiuse erano diventate velenose. A margine: Van Hoven si accorse anche che le giraffe che vivevano fuori dal recinto mangiavano solo le foglie di certe piante, evitando quelle sottovento rispetto a quelle da cui si erano già alimentate.

Un altro studioso delle piante, il fitopatologo americano Michael Kolomiets, ha fatto degli esperimenti con piante di granturco: ha osservato che alcuni esemplari geneticamente modificati per non produrre il GLV non attraggono le vespe che invece cercano sulle piante normali i bruchi di cui si cibano. Le piante in cui avviene la produzione di GLV, oltre a richiamare le vespe quando sono attaccate dagli insetti parassiti, producono anche acido jasmonico (chiamato così perché studiato per la prima volta nel gelsomino, Jasminum), un ormone vegetale che ha una funzione di autodifesa: stimola la produzione di altre sostanze, repellenti per gli insetti.

Tornando all’odore dell’erba tagliata, i più appassionati tra quelli che lo apprezzano vorranno forse sapere esattamente da cosa è prodotto: la molecola C6H10O, o cis-3-esenale. È un aldeide, cioè uno tipo di composti chimici che comprendono carbonio (C), idrogeno (H) e ossigeno (O). Non è una molecola stabile, ma anche quella in cui si riorganizza non appena trova una forma più stabile (il 2-esenale) odora di erba tagliata. Chi lo apprezza davvero tanto può acquistare dai produttori di sostanze chimiche il cis-3-esen-1-olo, cioè l’olio essenziale che lo contiene.

Per quanto riguarda le ragioni per cui l’odore dell’erba tagliata piace a tante persone non c’è una risposta certa. Alcuni studi di comportamento sulle scimmie hanno rivelato che l’odore del 2-esenale e del cis-3-esen-1-olo ha un effetto calmante in condizioni di stress. In particolare fa sì che ci sia un afflusso di sangue nella parte della corteccia del cervello che ha a che fare con l’olfatto e non solo. Forse però è solo che fa pensare all’estate.
