Books of 2024 (2023 or close to it)
Thank you for the tag @barbex it sounds like a fun one hehe. 9 books should be listed that were read in the last 12 months (or alternatively liked when you read it) if I'm right. And when I read the rules I had the same reaction: mind went blank on if I ever read a single book lol. Luckily I keep track of my reading because I like watching them back.
No pressure tagging: @aninkwellofnectar, @bloodlessheirbyjacques, @the-void-writes, @circa-specturgia, @aalinaaaaaa, @dyrewrites, @italiangothicwriteblr, @cherrybombfangirlwrites, @blind-the-winds and anyone who wants to join.
All of the listed were read last year and which I liked especially.

When The Stars Alight by Camilla Andrew (@aninkwellofnectar). Bi MC, gaslamp fantasy, gothic, court intrigue, delicious spice
You've already seen this many times on my page, because I really enjoyed this book and it was a window to many things I didn't know I'd enjoy in a story. So many beautiful description, beautifully emotional and sexy sex, rarely seen complex character dynamics and so much mouth watering food.
Éjféli Iskolák (Midnight Schools) by Attila Veres. lovecraftian horror set in Budapest
It's a horror short story collection by a hungarian author who I got recommended by a collegue. Attila Veres has a talent to capture that melancholic, sometimes surrelistic feeling living in Budapest which makes his work so authentic. But also very Big Ew for all the horroristic shit he created (in the best way.) My favourite one was the 'Porn After Midnight'.
Yumi and The Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanders. M/F romance focus, sci-fi/fantasy, anime-esque
You all know I'm a Sanderson trash. And the fact I, the slowest reader on the earth, read this book in two days, proved that very much lol. It felt like watching an anime, I swear to god. There's magic, time travel kinda thing, pretty innocent humour, loads of painting in it.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickenes. christmas nostalgia, historical fiction?
We all know this, but I'm very behind on classics book-wise so I began to catch up last year. Espceially because I love the animated movie so much. It was a lovely and educative read.
Y/N by Esther Yi. litfic, kpop fandom and industry satire basically, comteporary
It was one of my favourites from last year tbh, because I couldn't put down the damn e-reader. A very strange little read, 100% unhinged, but made me realise I might enjoy litfic, so I'll read more this year. Also, the story is not "summarizable" but the fact that this is the first two review on GoodReads tells a lot I think: reading this feels like that one night when i accidentally smoked weed for the first time I sort of feel like I just hallucinated this entire thing Yeah.
Even Though I Knew The End by C. L. Polk. F/F romance, fantasy, novella
Lesbian magical detective. Done, sold. I wanted to read this a while now, and it did not disappoint. It gave exactly what it promised. Fast paced little adventure with some humour and a lovely couple. Not a life-chaning read but as I mentioned, it gave what it promised. I enjoyed it anyway.
Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice. M/M romance kinda, supernatural, philosophical
Finally started to read the books my all time favourite movies are made of. Loved every bits of this, though sometimes it got way too wordy or I don't even know what. Overall though, it got me. Full of contemplation about human nature, God (though I could do a bit less without that) and death, plus the iconic vampire husbands and their arguments. It's just a real long broody monologue of Louis tbh. I'm fine with that it seems, though.
Legend & Lattes by Travis Baldree. F/F romance (not focus), cosy fantasy
Read pretty fast too. It's very much what it promises also. Cosy, and relaxing, and endearing. Love the concept of how a stoic warrior woman can settle finally and do something other than fighting. It was cute.
Tress of The Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. M/F romance (not that important i think), cosy fantasy, Princess Bride-vibes
Yes, I got all the secret project, because of course I would. This one was also something like Legends & Lattes imo. In Sanderson style tho. I'm also loving when the narrator is a third person telling the story. Those are always fun. Oh and the story had many cuteness, humour and Our Flag Means Death kinda pirates.

The Breach be upon ye!
Message reconstructed from scraps found in a cave outside of Haven City.
Date unknown; sender unknown; recipient unknown.
Written in Elvhen. Translated to Trade for the reader’s convenience.
(unintelligible) family; this note is meant for you.
I understand that you probably know (unintelligible) but I never had a chance to say it to you, so please indulge me; after all, if you are reading this, then I didn’t come back.
You have always excelled at following your duty to the clan. We could not have asked for a better

another side of you, a person that is rarely seen by others. I’ve met him only briefly, and sometimes glimpsed him from afar. I lament how little I know about him, and now I will never know more.
Still, I care about that person deeply. Ever since I saw (unintelligible)
(fragments missing)
hoped that, once we had accomplished our task, I could tell you everything - but, since I could not, this note will have to do.
I admire your wisdom and your polite wit, your patience and perseverance, your vast knowledge and your keen eye for beauty. I might not have known you as well as I have known others, but I loved
(fragments missing)
with Ghilan’nain’s grace, may your way back home be peaceful.
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
I don't enjoy research! Which is why I try to avoid it when writing fic for fun and general Writing Practice (well, I do fact check things like "how does blood work" and "how long do bones heal" and other details that are important to the plot, but I won't be going on Wikipedia dives or anything like that). If/when I write something with the intent of it being Published, though, I think I won't mind researching as much because. you know. it would be a more high-effort project all around
As to the fic that required the most research, probably The Breach, just because it's long and the plot relies on LogisticsTM a lot more. I've had to look up stuff about tourniquets, drowning (I think), tried to figure out what a room in a train car would be called in the Victorian era (I still don't know) and for a while checked Google Ngram a lot to make sure I didn't use words that were too modern. I kind of gave up on that last one, though, because it made writing a lot more exhausting and, also, I remembered that Candela Obscura (the setting I'm loosely basing the fic on) doesn't limit its characters' vocabulary like that and still gets the gaslamp vibe across. I still try to avoid words that interfere with The Vibe too much, though.
25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?
I think this happens on different stages for different fics, but I love the moment where things just click into place. For The Breach, it's outlining, specifically figuring out the exact sequence of scenes for the next part and how to combine the different POVs; for Cold Water (my recent Pillars of Eternity fic) it was weirdly the editing stage. I would write a chapter, go "eh, needs improvement", go away, and then I would come back to it a while later and just move some words around and it would suddenly turn into something Really Cool.
So, I guess the general answer is that my favorite thing is figuring out the flow of the fic! Whether it's on a line-by-line level or on a plot level.

Happy STS! Which of your characters do you think would be most popular among cosplayers? If you had to pick one of your OCs to cosplay, who would it be?
Oh heck yea! Thanks for the ask; I lowkey forgot that STS was a thing
So, I loooove cosplay as an art form/means of having fun! I used to do it more when I was younger, and I still dress up for cons/fan themed events. I also follow a lot of cosplay content online. I must admit that I think about the cosplay-ability of my characters a LOT. Like, every author wants a screen adaptation/a fully VA'd audiobook/whatever, but I specifically want silly creative ppl on the internet to dress up as my lads!!
That being said, I have many opinions on this front.
Taking a broad look at the Heart of Lead universe, I think it would offer a lot of different options to cosplayers. I could see the extended cast catering to people of all skill levels and interests, at least in terms of character design. You got regular-ass humans with one or two defining physical traits (although someone could always go in for more detail, because of the Victorian-fantasy clothes)! You also got characters with A.) complicated armor/uniforms/gowns, B.) wings/fangs/assorted fantastical traits, and C.) like,,, props?? Like there is a very large, somewhat evil sentient sword in this universe, and I would die happy if someone made their own for cosplay purposes. I would DIE.
All that in mind, here are the characters I think would be the most popular to cosplay, based on my observations of present-day cosplay communities online. I've given all them "most ___" awards, for funsies.
Dale Porter – most popular. No contest whatsoever. Sarcastic, evil, conventionally attractive white man. People love to cosplay characters with this profile; it's inescapable, and somewhat obnoxious. He's also fairly easy to cosplay, I would argue, as long as u got a white wig. (I would not personally cosplay him. He is my pookie but he can go ROT.)
Rosalind Lake – most sexy. If you want to wear an ostentatious dress and look hot in a femme way, here ya go. She's not the most important character, but her look is distinctive and fun. (I would definitely cosplay Rosalind.)
Wren Dorian – most steampunk. Listen, if you love steampunk/gaslamp fantasy/cabaret rock aesthetics, she is your GIRL. Big curly hair, big boots, massive belt full of tools, potentially goggles if you're feeling really fancy. Wren also gets some interesting design variations throughout the series that make her even cooler. (I would cosplay Wren. I have closet-cosplayed her before.)
Nicolas – most edgy. At least, that's how I think people would cosplay him. He wears a black trench coat and fingerless gloves for like half of the series; he has emo boy hair; he lowkey looks like Dream of the Endless. I'm not going to spoil his magical abilities, which make him EVEN EDGIER, but those exist, and they also impact his physical appearance. He's a sweetie boy baby who cries a whole lot, but he LOOKS very cool to one's inner 13-year-old. (I would cosplay Nicolas, and I have closet-cosplayed him before!)
Vesper – most fantasy. They're a faerie. He has wings. Their magic turns their eyes and fingers black. He wears sickass gender-nonconforming outfits, including such articles as capes and tiaras. If I was actually going to pour tens of hours into creating a cosplay from the HoL universe, I would 100% cosplay Vesper. They look cool as hell. (Also, fun personality – he's very outgoing and sweet!)
I'll leave it there for now, but I genuinely have SO many more opinions about HoL cosplay potentiality. There are options for the ppl who only cosplay evil dilfs,,,, for ppl who like to play princess dress-up,,,,, for ppl who incorporate gore and horror elements into their cosplays,,,,, we've got it all!!
(Now to get about FINISHING and PUBLISHING these books, so ppl can feasibly do this. Lmao.)

WEBCOMICS FOR THE DISCERNING READER
aka one nerds list of recommendations
- Order of The Stick (ongoing)
the order of the stick is one of my all-time favorites! it began as a gag-a-day parody of d&d and the fantasy genre in general, but has evolved into a genuine epic with a fascinating story, a memorable cast of characters, and still plenty of comedy. if you've ever enjoyed fantasy or dnd: you'll enjoy this. i suggest reading to about 100 pages before you decide whether or not you like it!
- Sleepless Domain (ongoing)
sleepless domain is a thrilling tale of magical girls in a society threatened by monsters. it's full of dark twists, charming characters, and exciting action! this is no madoka magicka ripoff, though: instead of angst centering around corruption, sleepless domain offers a fascinating and nuanced take on magical girls as child soldiers - with all the sparkles the genre requires. for this one i'd suggest reading up to chapter 2 or so before deciding what you think of it!
- The Glass Scientists (ongoing)
the glass scientists is a charming, gaslamp-fantasy take on assorted victorian mad scientists - as well as the concept of a mad scientist - in a series full of wit and drama. especially fascinating is the look at jekyll and hyde, not as good and evil halves of a person, but as a metaphor for repression (and even staying in the closet)!
- xkcd (ongoing)
xkcd is a fun, nerdy comic that, unlike the others of this list, is purely comedic rather than story-based! penned by former nasa engineer and bestselling author randall munroe, xkcd is a delightful romp through all things geeky- and i can guarantee you've almost certainly seen an xkcd strip floating around the internet before, recognizable by its distinctly stylized stick figures or silly graphs. simply hitting "random" and reading through one comic after another is an excellent way to kill time!
(there exists a wiki called "explain xkcd" that exists purely to clarify any especially obscure references or explain whatever scientific concept a given strip alludes to - i think that really says something about the sort of comic that xkcd is!)
- Val and Isaac (ongoing)
val and isaac, from tumblr's very own @/tredlocity, is a wonderful sci-fi series that's often simple one-off gags but occasionally has more intense story arcs! the characters (mostly bounty hunters) are charming and unique, the jokes are hilarious, and isaac specifically is one of my favorite ever interpretations of a wizard.
- Cocksley & Catapult (ongoing)
C&C, the sitcom-style gag-a-day comic about two besties with an impossible to describe dynamic, never fails to entertain. it's perhaps the most distinctly tumblr webcomic you'll find anywhere, whatever that means to you. perhaps the easiest way to describe it - the truest to the comic way to describe it - is "really funny in a mental illness kind of way." i love it.
hope this list is helpful to someone! let me know if you check out any of these comics, and what you think of them :D
and ESPECIALLY get in touch if you already like any of these comics.... i need someone to yell with about them

My players managed to survive the interactive Tome of Strahd but my god - are their characters TRAUMATIZED. Deeply so... Then they all had to pretend like they did not just see the fall of Ravenloft and watch a sad, baby hand man try to light a wicker sun.
Oh. They also found the reincarnation of Sergei and it was chaos.

The Climate in San Diego, California
San Diego, CA, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The city experiences average annual temperatures of around 70°F (21°C). The coastal influence keeps temperatures moderate, with relatively small daily variations between day and night. Summers are typically dry and comfortable, with temperatures averaging high 70s to mid-80s°F (25-30°C). Winters bring slightly cooler temperatures in the 60s°F (15-20°C), with occasional rainstorms. The region's topography creates microclimates, with coastal areas differing from inland valleys and mountains. While San Diego benefits from its pleasant climate, it also faces periodic droughts and wildfire risks due to its semi-arid conditions, requiring water management and fire preparedness.

County Gas Prices Up for 27th Straight Day
Gas prices can increase due to a combination of factors. Global oil supply and demand dynamics play a significant role; geopolitical tensions, conflicts, or production disruptions can result in reduced supply, causing prices to rise. OPEC decisions and global economic growth can influence oil production and prices. Fluctuating exchange rates affect the cost of importing oil. Seasonal demand variations, like increased travel during holidays, can increase prices. Environmental regulations or supply chain disruptions, such as natural disasters or refinery issues, impact supply. Speculation in futures markets can also influence prices. Moreover, shifts toward renewable energy sources and geopolitical considerations can create uncertainty about future oil availability, affecting pricing trends. Click here to read more.

N A N O W R I M O ; milestones
yeah, so i'm feeling extra indecisive this year and decided that instead of committing to one project or making a new one that i'll probably leave to rot in a few months i'm just going to work on three things at once (☚ stupid decision) i'll be splitting up my goal between the following:
P R O J E C T S
{ projects } ·{ carrd } · { twitter } · { wattpad } · { nanowrimo }
mordlust ; prussian inspired gaslamp fantasy . young adult . tag . introduction
the most i've ever managed to write for nanowrimo is 30k, which is great news considering i have about 30k left of this draft to write. in my "it doesn't have to be good, it just has to be done" era 😝
brand of the servator ; science fantasy space opera . young adult . tag . introduction
i want to reach 10k for this, not including any outlining or what i wrote for preptober. i've been really careful so far to preserve creative interest/energy in this project so i don't stop making progress !
project asas ; this one is a secret :)
ideally, if i have the time and energy leftover, i'll manage to write an additional 10k for this project. otherwise, my main focus will be on finishing chaps 3-6 so that nicole will stop yelling at me
