Pairing: jay halstead x reader
Summary: Jay is y/n husband and he left her for eight months to go to Bolivia. When he came back, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his wife again
Warning: none i guess, maybe a little bit of angst
English is not my first language, sorry if there’s some mistakes!
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
When your husband came home that day asking you to sit down on the couch, you didn’t think that he was going to say what he actually said. You two worked at Intelligence for four years and you didn’t think possible for him to change the way he did. When you first met him you immediately knew that he was kind, gentle and a good cop: you knew that he would have done everything to help innocents and to stop criminals, you knew that he was a good person.
And then something changed.
You didn’t know if that was because of his partner, Hailey Upton, or because of Voight; you just knew that you didn’t recognize him anymore. You even talked about it with Adam, your partner, but you weren’t able to find a way to help him get through that.
You just wanted him to be happy again, you just wanted him to be himself again.
That’s why you let him go.
When he told you that he accepted the job in Bolivia you couldn’t believe it, you just couldn’t.
Was he running away from the unit or was he running away from you?
You didn’t know what was true, but you couldn’t just deny him to be happy again: if he needed to go, you would have let him go.
And that’s exactly what you did.
“It will be for eight months maybe a little longer, okay? I will be back home soon.” He said that day, kissing your forehead with glossy eyes. “I love you… i really do but i need to do this. Please don’t be angry with me, i’ll come back to you, i promise. You’re the love of my life, y/n.”
When he left some minutes later to take his flight, you fell on the ground, crying; you needed him near you, you needed him there with you but you just couldn’t deny him to be himself again.
That’s why you didn’t tell him the truth.
That’s why you hid it from him.
When Kim knocked at your door that night after having heard about Jay, you let her in and you just walked back to the couch, where you cried all day.
“Y/n…” she whispered, walking towards you and hugging you tightly. “It’s okay. It’s temporary, right? He will come back, okay?”
You didn’t say anything, you didn’t nod or shook your head in response, you just kept crying again and again and then, after some minutes, you spoke.
“We perfectly know that he can die there.” You said, finally telling the truth, finally admitting out loud what you had in your mind all day since he talked to you.
“Oh, y/n…” she kept hugging you and she also placed her hand on your shoulder, trying to reassure you in some way. She wanted to say something, she wanted to help you go through all of that but her eyes fell on it.
It was on the table in front of the couch, exactly where you placed it after Jay left.
“What’s that?” She asked, keeping her eyes on the small object; she reached it and she looked at the result when you didn’t complain about it, then she looked up at you, shocked. “You’re pregnant?”
You wanted to cry, you wanted to scream, you wanted be alone in your thoughts, but Kim was there trying to help you and you really appreciated that, that’s why you just nodded, answering her.
“Does Jay know about it? Did He really leave you here alone knowing that you’re pregnant?”
Kim knew the answer deep down, she knew that Jay wouldn’t have left you there knowing that you were pregnant but she needed to know it for sure; when you shook your head saying “no”, she hugged you tighter.
“Oh, darling.” She whispered, caressing your back slowly and gently. “You should’ve told him, Y/n, i’m sure he wouldn’t have left knowing that.”
You sobbed, then you looked up at her and you shook your head again.
“T-That’s why i-i d-din’t tell him. He needed t-to go Kim, i c-couldn’t stop him.”
“But he had the rights to know the truth before taking such a decision!” She replied, shaking her head in disagreement.
“When he came here telling me about the job in Bolivia he already took it, he accepted it without even talking about it with me. I would have told him if he hadn’t already accepted it. He told me that he had a flight in few hours, how could i have told him? I know, after all, that he’s lost. He’s not himself anymore and, if taking that job is going to help him, then i will accept it. He said, after all, that’s only for eight months.” You said, even if he said that there was the possibility that he needed to stay a little longer. “When he will be back home, i will still be pregnant and he will be able to be here when our baby is born.”
Kim didn’t agree with you but you was still shocked, that’s why she didn’t say anything: she just hugged you, promising you that she would have help you.
And she did, as all your unit.
Kim, Adam, Hailey, Kevin, Hank and also Trudy helped how they could.
In the next months they helped you, they came to your house to keep you company and they accompanied you to the hospital every time you needed to do a visit.
You were never alone after all, but you knew, however, that the most important person for you wasn’t there. You couldn’t blame him since you didn’t tell him the truth, but still you missed him so much.
Your baby was healthy but he, or she, wasn’t ready to be born yet, even if one week passed since the due date.
In some ways you were relieved because you really wanted Jay to be there when you would’ve become a mother. Every single time someone knocked at your door or every single time your phone rang, you panicked, afraid that something happened to your husband while he was still in Bolivia. You didn’t talked to him in the last few months, mostly because you didn’t want to distract him during a mission and because you were always afraid of blowing his cover.
That’s why you hardly talked to him or contacted him on the phone, and he did the same thing for the same reasons.
Until you didn’t hear anything about him from the army, you knew that he was okay, you knew that he was still alive. And every day you kept going on, holding on this thought, holding on the fact that no one called you, so he had to be safe, he had to be alive.
You didn’t know when he would’ve returned home, but you just hoped that it was soon; you couldn’t get through labor without him by your side.
That day you was ready to go to the hospital for another visit with your gynecologist. You asked Adam to come with you and he immediately accepted; that’s why, when you heard someone knocking at your door, you thought it was him.
“C-Coming.” You said, trying to get up from the couch where you were waiting for him. Your belly was so big that it was difficult for you to get up easily. “Just give me one minute, i’m trying to get up from the couch.”
At the other side of the door there was not at all Adam, there was Jay with his bag on the shoulder, happy to be home again, happy to be able to see his wife again. But when he heard you saying that she was having difficulties getting up from the couch, he froze, thinking that you might have been hurt at work.
Before he could say anything, the door opened in front of him and he immediately looked at his wife; he was left speechless, standing in front of the door frame, looking at his wife that was definitely pregnant.
“J-Jay?” You whispered, shocked. You didn’t expect him to be there, you thought that he would have informed you before coming home, but he was there, in front of you in all his beauty. Being so far from him for almost nine months was hard for you: you went through hell alone, especially when you almost lost your baby, and having him in front of you was like a dream. You definitely thought that you were still dreaming.
“You’re pregnant.” He said, unable to look away from your belly. He let go the bag that he had on his shoulder, letting it fall to the ground. He couldn’t believe his eyes, he just couldn’t believe it. “Am i the father?”
That was the first thing that popped into his mind when he saw you and he immediately regretted saying that out loud when he saw your face.
“What do you mean? Are you really thinking that i slept with someone else just right after your departure? You’re my fucking husband, of course you’re the father.”
You were so angry.
You didn’t even realize it till that moment.
You were so angry because he left you alone with a baby in your belly, even if he didn’t know it, even if it wasn’t his fault since you decided not to tell him the truth. But you were definitely angry: he stayed away for so long and the first thing that he asked you is if you got pregnant with someone else?
“Why didn’t you tell me? I would have come back!” He said after few moments, still standing in front of the door, still shocked by the news.
“You took the job before asking me what i thought about it, what did i have to do? You didn’t even took one day to talked with me! You came here, saying that you were going to Bolivia and that you had a flight that same day!“
Jay knew that coming back home wouldn’t have been easy, he knew that you would’ve been upset and you had all the rights to be angry with him, but he definitely didn’t expect to come home and find you pregnant.
“Wait, did you know you were pregnant when i left?!”
You froze, then you stepped back and you invited him to enter the apartment, to talk about it privately.
Jay immediately came in, leaving the bag on the ground, completely focused on his wife. You closed the door behind you two and you leaned against the kitchen counter, sighing.
Jay, even if he was mad at you, immediately walked towards you and helped you; then he took a chair and he invited you to sit down, placing an hand on your shoulder and caressing you gently. You appreciated it but you perfectly knew that you two have still to talk about it.
“Yes.” You answered after that, placing an hand on your own belly, caressing it gently and feeling the baby kicking you hard. “I discovered it the same morning you accepted the job. I wanted to tell you when you came home but you talked first and I couldn’t tell you after that.”
Jay couldn’t believe his ears, he couldn’t believe that his wife hid something important like a baby from him for almost nine months. You should have told him, you should have told him the truth because he wouldn’t have left knowing that you were pregnant with his baby.
“You should have told me, Y/n!” He wasn’t able to control himself, he just yelled at you and, after that, he regretted it. You slightly jumped on the chair, with tears running down your cheeks. You knew that, you knew that he had all the rights to be angry with you but you weren’t prepared for this. You just wanted him to be home because you needed him but you never thought about how he would’ve reacted at the news. You had time to prepare yourself to become a mother and then he came home and discovered that he’s going to become a father in what, few days?
“I’m sorry.” He immediately told you, kneeling in front of you and placing his hands on your arms. “I’m sorry i yelled, it’s just that…. I wanted to know, I wanted to be here with you.”
You sobbed and cried, especially when his hands touched you after all that time. You missed him so much.
“I know.” You sobbed, looking at him. “I’m sorry, i wanted to tell you but I know that you wouldn’t left and… you said you needed it, I couldn’t stop you from that. I just wanted you to be happy again, I couldn’t see you so sad here. And… when you came here saying that you accept the job in Bolivia… i just couldn’t take it away from you. You were right saying that i had to let you go, i saw it in your eyes.”
Jay caressed your arms slowly and gently, then he leaned closer and he kissed your forehead.
“I’m sorry i left you alone.” He said, softly. And it was true. All the time, when he was in Bolivia for his new job, he thought about you and he felt guilty because he knew that you were alone, he knew that you would probably have been hurt. That’s why he asked Kim, Adam, Kevin and Hailey to be near you in case you needed them.
“Well, i wasn’t alone, was i?” You smiled softly through your tears; you took his hands and placed them on your belly the moment you felt your baby kicking. “He, or she, was with me all the time.”
Jay felt the kick against his palms and his eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Say hi to your daddy.” You whispered, apparently talking to your baby while looking at Jay in the eyes.
Jay wanted to say something, wanted to kiss your belly and whispered something to it like he was talking to your baby, but before he could say something, you moaned in pain.
“What’s wrong?” He immediately asked, concerned. “Is everything okay, babe?”
You looked down at yourself when you felt your legs wet.
“Oh no.” You whispered.
Jay looked at you, confused. “What’s happening?”
You looked at him and moaned in pain.
“ i think I’m in labor.”
“Fuck.” He said, placing an hand on his mouth after that. “I’m sorry, i swore in front of the baby!”
You giggled and shook your head but you were interrupted by the first contraction; you moaned in pain and you looked up at him.
“Hospital.” You whispered and he nodded.
“Hospital.” He agreed. “Holy shit, I’m going to be a father.”
“Jay.” You said while he took the car keys and the labor bag you prepared some weeks ago; he came back to you and he helped you get to your feet.
“I’m sorry!” He said, referring to his previous words.

The ringing in his ears began to fade as Jay sat up, the world covered in grey smoke. Turning his head too quickly was almost painful, but his mind was focused on one thing. Where was his wife?
“HAILEY!” He screamed, vision finally coming back fully as he looked around. The truck was blown to pieces, twisted scorched metal dotted around the lot. He thought there was a car alarm going off, but he wasn’t sure. “HAILEY!”
There was no response, and Jay made himself stand and survey the scene. She’d been just behind him. But now she was twenty yards away and he was running, losing his balance as he tried sprinting to her with a spinning head and aching heart.
“Hailey, Hailey. Hailey, wake up. Wake up!” She was too still, but her pulse was steady under her too pale skin. He grabbed out his multiway, the Intelligence only radio ignored as he fiddled with the channel.
“50-21 George there’s been an explosion at the parking lot at West Addison and California. 10-1, officer down. Roll an RA to our location right now, she’s unconscious.” His fingers never left Hailey’s neck, her pulse easing his worries. “Hailey, are you with me? Wake up, Hail, c’mon. Wake up.”
He was too afraid to shake her with the blow she’d taken, worried about how her back could have been injured. Instead with one hand he picked up his secure radio, Voight screaming into it.
“Sarge! Hailey’s been hurt. There was an explosion, I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Is she awake? Jay, is she awake?” He could barely hear his sergeant’s question over the fear in his head but he shook it.
“She’s unconscious. Ambo is on the way, we’re closer to Rush but I’ll get them to bring us to Med. She’s not waking up.”
“It’s Upton, she’s going to be fine. Stay with your wife. We’ll stay on Escano, Hailey needs you.”
“I’ll keep you updated.”
The roar of the ambulance finally arrived, along with CFD’s finest. And in this case he was so lucky it was people he knew from 51 arriving, hoses in hand to knock back the fire from the explosion. Mikami and a stranger came running over with the backboard, shock on Mikami’s face.
“Halstead, what happened?”
“There was an explosion, a case we were working our CI got burned. Hailey got the brunt. Violet…” It was the first time he’d used the paramedic’s first name, and he saw immediately how it affected her.
“You’re coming with us, you’re injured too. I’m assuming you want Med?”
“Please?” Jay never begged, never asked questions, but when it was to get Hailey the best care he’d do anything.
“But Rush is closest to—“ The paramedic he didn’t know began to speak, but Violet interrupted her.
“Detective Halstead’s brother is an attending at Med, and this is said detective’s wife. If we don’t bring her to Med she’ll get transferred across. It’s better continuity of care.” She paused, finishing her survey and putting a c-collar on his still unconscious wife. “Go get the backboard on the other side. STELLA! We need you for a roll.”
Jay watched as one of his wife’s friends came over, dawning horror on her face as she realised it was Hailey lying there.
“Halstead…what…what can I do?”
“Just help her. Please.”
He watched them roll her on and strap her in, the rest of Stella’s truck crew running as gently as possible with Hailey to get her into the ambulance. Jay followed, pats on his back and squeezes to his arm as he got in from the people he knew.
“Let me know what happens,” Stella said, the last one to give him a squeeze as he got in.
“You know I will. She’ll kill me if I don’t.”
The doors shut and Stella hit them, the new paramedic setting off with the sirens going.
“Where’s Brett?” Jay asked, watching as Violet put a mask on Hailey, gauze on the cuts on her face.
“Put this on your cheek, you’re bleeding.” She handed him a wad of gauze and he followed her instructions, wincing at the ache the pressure gave him. “She’s in Oregon. Jacobs is my temporary partner while she’s gone. She’ll be back soon.”
It was clear she didn’t want conversation and Jay stayed quiet in the rig as Violet worked. Hailey was still unconscious as they pulled into Med, the doors opening to reveal Maggie and Will.
“Jay. What happened?” Will went to professional mode, but Jay could see the worry in his eyes.
“Hailey Upton, 33. Caught in an explosion, she’s been unconscious since it happened.” Violet rattled off vital signs but Jay didn’t pay attention, just watching as they wheeled her into a trauma room. It was flashbacks to finding Kim, except this time he wasn’t covered in blood. She’d be fine. She had to be fine.
His stomach roiled and he ran to the bathroom, barely making it in time to bring up bile. They’d been made. His wife was in danger and he could barely breathe. If they only got six months to be married and that was it…no. He couldn’t think like that. He couldn’t.
When he was steady enough he flushed and washed his hands, arriving back out to see Hailey’s bed be wheeled to the elevator. He went to run but Will stopped him, grabbing onto his shoulders. For the first time in almost two years Jay melted into his big brother and let Will hold him, taking the strength he needed for a moment.
“How is she?” He asked when he let go, Will steering him to an empty bay.
“She’s still unconscious. We’ve sent her up for a CT and MRI to make sure everything’s ok in her spine and brain. It’s normal after a hard fall like that, so I’m not worried that she’s still out. Do we need to know anything?”
“No, nothing. She’s healthy, things are good. Things are finally good for us, Will. We’re married and happy and things are finally right. I can’t…”
“She’s going to be fine. You could have told me about the marriage though, finding out from her ring wasn’t fun and I couldn’t answer any questions.”
Jay rocked his mind back to when he’d told his brother…and he hadn’t. Between work and the new apartment and Will picking up extra shifts because of the stupid ass apartment building he’d bought they hadn’t been able to get a drink since maybe Halloween.
“Fuck. I’m sorry.”
“Good to know you can keep a secret. I need to stitch up your face, tell me what happened.”
He didn’t have Hailey there to distract him from the needles, fear gripping him. But Will kept him talking and he was able to get through it with the thought that he’d see his wife soon. He had to see her soon.
“Congratulations. I’m taking you both out for dinner when she’s ready to go. You deserve it. Do you want Mom’s ring?”
“Nah.” The thought of that ring hadn’t even hit his mind. “She didn’t even want an engagement ring. The silicone bands mean we don’t need to worry in work about anything.”
“Practical as always. We were able to leave hers on for the moment. She should be back any minute, once I get the results I’ll let you know.”
“Thanks.” They came out to Hailey being wheeled down and Jay was allowed sit with her. It’d been an hour and a half since everything had happened, and time had passed too quickly and not fast enough. He stayed still, holding the hand that didn’t have a cannula in it. Every part of his body wanted to leave the hospital, but it was Hailey. He wasn’t going anywhere.
A knock on the glass startled him, Ruzek there with a grave expression on his face. Jay gave the wave for him to come in, Adam taking the spare seat.
“How is she?”
“Still unconscious. Will says it’s normal, but.” He shrugged.
“If anybody knows what you’re dealing with right now, I do. And I know the rage that’s gonna hit you in about an hour, that someone could harm the person you love. And I also know that you’ll let it fester because you won’t make the stupid decisions I made.”
“I went with you for some of them.”
“Let me be wise and sage for a minute. I wanted to check in, I was driving past and thought you’d want an update. But Escano’s dead.”
“The fuck?”
“He was stabbed to death. And castrated. Anna’s missing. It’s a mess but it’s our mess. Stay here with your wife, make sure she’s ok.”
“I can…”
“Platt once told me that the worst thing to do is to wake up alone after an in the line incident. I still regret not being here last year when Kim woke up. Stay here.”
“When did she tell you that?” Jay meant it as a joke, but Adam took it seriously, eyes staring at the ceiling as he counted.
“Seven years, four months, eleven days ago. When Kim got shot by that robot gun shit. But it’s good advice.”
“Yeah. It is. Let me know what’s happening?”
“You know I will.” Ruzek stood, looking over at Hailey in the bed. “You know she’s loved you for years, right? Even when we were together, we both knew there was someone else we wanted. I’m just really glad she’s happy. You both deserve it.”
“Thank you. For all of it.” Jay rose and pulled the younger man into a hug, holding him close for a few seconds before they separated. Adam got it out of everyone, and having him there for even a few minutes meant a lot.
“I’ve gotta get back, we’re searching for whatever we can find. Voight and Platt told me to let you know that if you even think about coming back to the district they’ll individually and together kill you.” Jay actually laughed at that, a real one that made Adam smile.
“I’m not leaving. Even if it is a hospital.”
As Ruzek left with a wave, badge around his neck as he went back to work, Will arrived in with an iPad. The first thing he did was pull the c-collar from around Hailey’s neck, Jay relaxing seeing it happen.
“What’s the diagnosis?”
“Her neck and spine are fine. She’s got some cracked ribs, and she’ll have a concussion and a hell of a headache, but she’ll be fine.”
“Why isn’t she awake then?” The anger burst out of him unintentionally, staring at his brother. “If she’s ok why hasn’t she woken up?”
“How much stress are you under right now? Can you even tell me about it?” Will didn’t give him an inch, Jay staring back at him.
“No.”
“That’s why. Her body was forced to rest, so now she’s fully resting. It’s a good thing, as awkward as it can be. She’ll wake up soon. We’re gonna admit her for the night for observation, someone will be over to bring her up to the neuro ward. I got Abrams to check her scans to be sure. Ok?”
“I’m sorry. Thanks.”
“I get it.” Will squeezed his shoulder before going to leave. “I’ve to get back to work, when I’m finished I’ll come up to see you both.”
It was another forty minutes before an orderly came down to get her upstairs, Jay following them. Hailey was put into a room on her own, a view of Chicago from the window. Not that Jay even noticed it, his attention was focused on his wife in the bed.
Every twenty minutes or so he got a text from someone in his unit letting him know what was going on. They’d found the stash house and Anna was safe, Escano’s killer unknown. He could read between the lines of Burgess’s text, what she wasn’t saying but was. He didn’t care. Anna wasn’t his problem right then, his wife was his priority. Whatever happened with the case happened. He’d find out later.
Violet had put Hailey’s cannula in her right hand thanks to him insisting she was left handed so Jay got to hold her hand, pushing a kiss to her wedding ring. After the worst week of their lives, the fear that she’d be in prison or worse. The not knowing. The way Voight proved he would actually go down for one of them. He’d never trust the man how he used to - and he knew Hailey wouldn’t either - but that had meant a little to him.
“I really need you to wake up soon. I dunno how long I can wait here without your eyes open. Please?”
He stared at the tv in the corner, a random infomercial playing. How they’d found an infomercial in the early evening he had no idea, but there it was on the screen.
“Jay?” He turned too quickly, Hailey’s eyes open and a confused expression on her face.
“Hey. There was an explosion, you got hit pretty hard and you’ve been out. How’re you feeling?”
“Like I got pushed onto my back by an explosion?” Her dry humour made him laugh, Hailey grinning. He hit the call bell for the nurse, watching as the exam was done.
“A mild concussion but you got very lucky, Detective. And your husband didn’t leave your side. We’ll leave you alone for a while, and I’ll get food for you.”
She stared at Jay in shock for a moment until they were alone. “You hate hospitals.”
“And?”
“No, Jay, you hate hospitals. I had to bribe you with paying for range time to make you get a flu shot.”
“But I love you. So wherever you go, I go. Got it?”
“Got it.”
He leaned down to kiss her, breathing in the smell that was just Hailey. They were ok. That was all he cared about right now.

thinking about it... erin & jay left in similar(ish) ways but people only saw jay's departure as horrible and rushed. it's just frustrating to see because it's been made very clear by these stans that they can't separate their petty feelings towards sophia from the show. i agree that tracy does get unnecessary hate (and i don't condone it) but stans are constantly invalidating sophia too. idk... missing erin but i also understand why sophia has moved on.
ok so I have many thoughts and I am just putting them under a cut in case anyone cares to read
Erin & Jay did both leave in ways that felt rushed. Erin's entire exit storyline felt like it came out of left field, and she was finally making progress..., but then Jay just leaves because suddenly he's got a random ex wife?? And PTSD that had never really been explored--and a girlfriend who was willing to help him work through it? But no, it was ERIN who left Jay? Jay essentially broke up with her when he left, so of course that whole departure was bound to be a mess. The writers completely fumbled her exit, and it was extremely out of character for both HER and for Jay.
And then!! THEN!!! Jay goes and leaves Hailey without talking to her first--and this time, it's worse, because he's actively married to her (and remembered this wife--which, also--did he ever divorce Abby? he must have if he was able to marry hailey, but that storyline went literally nowhere which is infuriating)
But no! Jay isn't horrible! It's not him--it's the writers, it's the storyline that is flawed, not the character! Erin is still public enemy no. 1, the big bad, the selfish and manipulative bitch from apartment 407 (or whatever her apartment number is lol). She left Jay! She's so evil! Her exit was written perfectly, and nooooooo not rushed or fumbled at all!
NO. JAY LITERALLY LEFT HER!! HE DECIDED THAT HE DIDN'T WANT TO LET HER IN, AND OPTED TO LEAVE HER WHEN SHE OFFERED TO HELP HIM, TO SUPPORT HIM HOW HE DID FOR HER, AND HE REJECTED HER.
Tracy does get hate, but the same people who defend her turn around and attack everyone else when they don't align with what they like/want/think. It's hypocritical. No one deserves that kind of hate. And also??? They're real people with real lives who don't even know we exist. And quite frankly, I don't care. I think the work they do is nice, and I like their activism and that they promote various things, but they're just people at the end of the day, and I'm not going to go out of my way to praise/harass someone when they're...,, just normal people (who happen to be known by a lot more people and have a lot more money, lol)
do I want erin back as a character? Yeah. I think she's got depth, and I think that we were finally getting to see her deal with more beyond her stupid mother, but then it all just got... ruined. But the fact that upstead shippers (and other people, not just specifically upstead stans/upton/halstead etc) keep saying toxic things about
A. her (sophia bush)
B. erin as a character
C. the people who: like linstead, erin, or sophia
is just frustrating. Me, as an individual, liking erin as a character, and liking linstead, doesn't take anything away from you or your life. Stop sending hate to people--actors and fans--because their likes and dislikes don't align with your own. Ship who you want! Like who you want! I love Hailey, and I love Erin! Awesome!
someone straight up called me delusional in my inbox once bc I really like linstead. And that's only scratching the tip of the iceberg as to the downright rude and offensive asks/messages/comments I've gotten about the characters I like and things I write. how is that acceptable?
anyways lots of rambling but oh well haha

Can I get a Halstead sister story where she has an serious accident and Jay and Will have an massive argument blaming each other.
Thanks for the request! I loved writing this one and I hope I did it justice!
Halstead Brothers x Halstead!sister Lee Henry x Halstead!sister
The Name of the Game
Being the youngest Halstead had it’s perks. For one you had the majority of the Cities first responders wrapped around your finger. Seriously though your first two boyfriends didn’t know what hit them after they broke your heart. Another thing was bullies left you alone for the most part. No one really wanted to feel the wrath that was Uncle Voight and Uncle Boden.
Although as much as you enjoyed being the youngest Halstead, sometimes you hated it.  Like today.
It wasn’t your fault Lee Henry had decided to challenge you to a tree climbing race while you were at the friends of firefighters barbeque. Sure, you were 15 and didn’t need to be climbing trees, but you just couldn’t stop yourself.
The name of the game was to see who could climb the tree the fastest and you had just witnessed Lee Henry climb with the time of 2 minutes.
“Beat that Halstead” he laughed while jumping to the ground. Tossing him your phone, you smirked and stated, “gladly.” and began pulling yourself up.
Lee Henry had watched as you grabbed branch by branch until you were almost to the top.
He took his eyes off of you for less than a second to check the time - which was impressively at 1 minute 15 seconds. When all of a sudden he heard the unmistakable sound of a branch breaking followed by a thud.
Looking up he noticed you on the ground unconscious and in a very uncomfortable looking position.
“Shit!” screamed Lee while running to your side. “Y/N! Wake up!”  he called while slapping and shaking you. When you didn’t stir, he got scared. Looking around he noticed his dad flipping burgers on the grill in a corner, while talking to Jay and Ritter. Feeling uneasy about having to come clean about what happened, he looked at you and shook you one more time. When you didn’t stir, he groaned, scrambled to his feet and ran screaming , “Dad!”
Christopher Herrman was flipping burgers while chatting with Jay Halstead and Darren Ritter, when he heard his son’s heavy footsteps and a scream!
“Dad! Dad!” his son panted when he got closer.
“What’s wrong Lee?” Herrman asked while putting a hand on his son’s shoulder.
“Y/N uh we were uh shit uh, it’s all my fault” he stuttered while pointing and making hand gestures miming what happened.
Jay, who had been half listening up till this point, dropped to his knees and looked Lee Henry in the eyes and calmly asked, “Lee, what happened to Y/N?”
Pushing the tears back, Lee took a breath and began, “we were racing to see who could climb the tree the fastest. I looked away for a minute and the branch broke and she fell out of the tree. She hasn’t regained consciousness. I’m sorry Uncle Jay.”
Sighing, Jay looked at Ritter and Hermann, “It’s okay Lee” he said and he patted Hermann on the back before running towards his sister. Ritter following close behind.
As Jay and Ritter got closer, they noticed you were finally coming around. Quickly dropping to your side, Jay pushed gently back to the ground, while Ritter started clearing your C-Spine.
“Jay?” you asked confused.
“Stay down Y/N, Ritter is just checking you over” calmly stated your brother while running a hand through your hair.
Furrowing your brow, you frowned, “What happened?”
“You fell out of the tree. But you’ll be okay” smiled Jay.
After that, nothing was spoken between the three of you. Until Ritter broke the silence, “Jay, C-Spine is clear, but you really should get her to Med. I think she broke her arm and maybe her leg. But she definitely has a concussion.”
While Ritter was getting up, Jay thanked him and waited til he was out of ear shot to speak to you again.
“So kid, how about we go see Will at Med”
You nodded and began to try and get up, only to be stopped by Jay.
“I’ll carry you. It’ll be faster” and with that he picked you up bridal style and carried you to his truck.

You’re Okay
Jay Halstead x Halstead!Sister (includes Sarah Reese) Requested: yes A/N: I don’t have OCD myself, but I did a bunch of research to make sure I was portraying it respectfully. I hope the way I wrote this came off respectfully.
“Jay, I really don’t understand why we are here? I’m fine,” Y/N stated from her spot on the gurney. You were sat up in a treatment room in the ED of Chicago Med in a gown and in the socks you and your friends affectionately called ‘grippy socks’, with your big brother. Outside your room was a nurse sitting in a chair watching your room like a hawk.
“Y/N, like I told you the last time you asked, we are here cause I’m worried about you. You are always repeating the same task over and over again, get agitated when I or Will mess up the task and you seem to be more anxious than usual. Now relax and watch whatever this is” Jay stated while gesturing lazily to the small TV in the corner of the room playing some show about a ladybug superhero.
Leaning back against your pillow, you played with your admission bracelet and thought about how you ended up here.
You were sitting in your room tracing all the corners your walls created with your eyes, when you heard Jay get home. You began to hear Will chatting with Jay and you knew he was snitching on you. You were mad sure, but another part of you was sure that nothing would come of it. Next thing you knew the front door could be heard being slammed shut and Jay knocked on your bedroom door.
“Y/N, I think we need to talk” he stated when he walked into your room.
You just kept tracing the corners of your walls.
“Y/N, look at me, I need to talk to you”
Blinking, you looked at Jay with a pissed off face and huffed out, “you messed me up. Now I have to start again!” And then you diverted your eyes and began tracing the corners of the walls again.
“I talked to Will, he thinks you should get a psych eval at Med.” continued Jay, testing the waters. You just ignored him and kept your task going.
“Like tonight,” he added.
And next thing you knew you were in the back of your brother’s pickup truck with the kid safe locks on.
The ED that night was rather slow - it was 10pm. After getting admitted, you were taken into a small room away from Jay. The nurse began taking your temperature, pricked your finger for some blood, and took your height and weight. After that, you were moved to a gurney in the hallway next to the nurses station. The nurse told you they were prepping a room for you and would call Jay back for you.
20 minutes later - after a doctor came by and checked your lungs and heart - you were moved into a room.
“I’m going to need you to change into this gown and these socks. And everything you have on you needs to go into this bag, okay sweetheart?” calmly stated the nurse while laying the gown, socks, and plastic bag on the bed.
Once you were changed and all your’s and Jay’s belongings  collected, you were sitting on the bed watching whatever show the nurse had switched on for you, when you looked over at Jay and asked, “Jay why are we here? I’m fine. This is all so unnecessary.”
Jay sighed, “humor me” and with that you began staring at the nurse outside your room.
“Y/N, I’m going to step out for a little while, just so Dr. Reese can evaluate you.” said Jay pulling you out of your thoughts. You nodded and waved as he exited and closed the door.
Reese walked over to your brothers chair and sat down,
“So Y/N, I know this can seem really scary having a psych eval, but trust me it’s super painless.”
“Okay,” you smiled.
Reese crossed her legs and picked up her clipboard and smiled, “okay, so I’ll ask you some basic questions first. So do you know why you're here tonight in the ED?”
“I have way to overprotective brothers who think I need a psych eval because I’m too anxious” Y/N easily replied.
You watched as Reese checked something on her clipboard and then she asked, “Do you know the day, month, and year?”
“July 31st, 2022” you hummed out.
Reese smiled again, “you're doing great so far Y/N. Have you consumed alcohol in the past two week?”
You shook your head, “wouldn’t dare to”
Reese chuckled and continued, “Have you done drugs in the past two weeks?”
Shaking your head you added, “With a cop for a brother? I don’t have a death wish”

Rough Night
Hailey x Jay x Halstead!sister When the reader has a rough day she goes to Jay but ends up getting help from Hailey.  Warning: mentions of panic attacks, anxiety, mentions of self harm (not graphic more on the vague side of things)
Please know that you are loved and people care about you! If you are struggling please reach out to someone you trust!
‘Please be home. Please be home’ you thought to yourself while you knocked on your brother’s door. You hadn’t had a bad night in just a little over 3 months, but you woke up this morning and felt like it was going to be one. You had tried to enact your safety plan. You put on your comfy outfit ~ your ‘we’ll all just be skeletons one day’ pajama pants that had pockets and your oversized sweatshirt Will had given you. ~ you also tried to distract yourself the majority of the day by watching your comfort shows.
But now it was nearing 9pm and you could feel yourself spiraling and knew you had to get out of your apartment. Instead of calling Jay to let him know you were coming, you decided to just walk to his place. The walk over should have been easy, but you felt on edge and were constantly looking over your shoulder.
Now here you stood in front of his door on the verge of tears just wanting to be in the embrace of your favorite big brother.
“Y/N?!” questioned Hailey as she opened the door.
‘Fuck! Jay either wasn’t home or Hailey and him were in the middle of something’ you thought.
“What’s going on?” inquired Hailey as she saw your change of facial expression.
“Uh, is Jay here?” you felt your voice waver as you spoke.
“He actually just ran to the store” responded Hailey.
Looking behind you, you shifted on your feet before looking down at the horrid maroon carpet that was in the hallway of Jay’s apartment complex. “Oh, I’ll just go then” you said.
As you turned to walk away, Hailey called out, “Hey! You can come in if you want. He should be right back.”
You smiled and nodded as she led you inside. Once she closed the door she walked you to the couch and the two of you sat down.
“Is this a ‘only my big brother can help me’ situation, or can I get in the loop?” asked Hailey, breaking the silence.
You pulled your knees up to your chest and sighed, “I’m not sure if you would understand.”
“You could always say it to me and if I can’t help, then we can just wait for Jay.”
“Ok,” you began.
Breathing you laid back and went criss cross applesauce in your spot and began to explain.
“So, ever since I started college, I’ve been on meds for Anxiety. I haven’t had a bad day or a full blown panic attack since getting on the meds. But 2 months ago, I had a really rough night and Jay ended up walking me off the edge. I’ve been doing really well since then. I haven’t been so overwhelmed with life and have taken a step back from certain things, and I even made it one month clean for the first time in a year and half, but uh I don’t know I woke up today and just felt off. I enacted my safety plan but I just am so overwhelmed! Everyone is telling me to be happy since happy things are happening such as me graduating in a week and all of these other things, but I’m more overwhelmed and - and” and before you knew it the hoover dam in your eyes finally broke and you were sobbing.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay to be overwhelmed! I totally understand what you're going through!” soothed Hailey while pushing back your hair.
“Really? But you're so confident and badass” you sobbed.
Chuckling to herself, Hailey spoke softly, “I wasn’t always this confident. I too was plagued with anxiety and was on meds for a while.”
Wiping the back of your hand under your nose, you smiled, “really?”
Smiling, Hailey added, “really. And can I let you in on a little secret?”
You nodded.
“I’m also in recovery” she whispered.
Your eyes went wide! You couldn’t believe the badass, confident cop who was banging your brother was also in recovery, “What!?!” You exclaimed!
Hailey nodded and laughed, “yea, for 10 years. It does get easier, the urges will die down and it also helps to have a good support system. Which it seems like you have.”
“10 years?!? I can’t even envision making it past 1 year!” you whispered.

Heart Rate
Connor Rhodes x Reader Requested: @kp9983 I was wondering if you’d write where reader works as a veterinary technician and passes out at work so shes brought into the ED and they page him down to check her out to make sure it’s not a heart issue (it can be something super simple) and when he’s listening to her heart it speeds up because he makes her nervous being so close cause he’s cute so he starts flirting with her?
Warning: hospital jargon
Thank you for the request! I loved this idea and I hope I did it justice! This was also my first time writing flirting, so I hope it’s good!
It was never a struggle to get out of bed when the best boyfriend in the whole world, laid next to you! But for some reason today was extra difficult for Y/N. Chalking it up to just soreness from yoga from the night before, she finally lifted her body up and out from under the sheets. Sitting on her knees facing her pillow, she looked at the sleeping form next to her and smiled. ‘Today will be a good day’ you  thought to yourself and she finally got out of bed.
Once in the bathroom, you pulled out some Motrin and popped a few tablets in. You then repeated the same mantra from earlier.
Getting ready for work was slow, for some reason everything ached and all you wanted to do was lie back down, but when you worked as a vet tech duty calls!
At work you saw your pet patients and loved every second of it. Your body still aches but how can you be in a sour mood when you're surrounded by animals all day.
“Y/N, I’m going to order lunch from the Thai place that just opened up around the corner, want anything?” asked your fellow tech and best friend Andrea.
Looking up from the desk, you smiled and responded, “I’m fine, I’m not really hungry, but thanks for the offer”
“Okay,” replied Andrea as she grabbed her purse and headed towards the door.
You waited til the door swung shut before pulling the drawer next to you open. You reached inside and grabbed the bottle of Motrin. You took two more tablets and then quickly threw the bottle back in the drawer and shut the drawer.
Looking at the clock on the wall, it read 11:45am, ‘5 more hours Y/N. You got this! Today is going to be a good day’ you thought to yourself.
At that moment the door swung open to reveal a female with her mountain cur feist dog.
Getting up to greet them, you all of a sudden felt a wave of dizziness wash over you and before you could utter the words, ‘good morning’ you hit your head on the desk and fell to the floor, unconscious.
Waking up, you didn’t feel achy anymore and you felt yourself lean into the soft bed. ‘Did Andrea let you -’
Before you could finish your thought the curtain was pulled back and Dr. Ethan Choi was standing in front of you.
“Y/N, glad to see you’ve regained consciousness. Do you remember what happened?” asked Choi.
“I was achy and then got dizzy, but I don’t remember passing out” you answered.
As he began to check your vitals he spoke, “that’s okay, has this happened before?”
Stifling a laugh you respond, “What? Fainting? No”
Dr. Choi began to write something down on the tablet and then spoke to you, “You don’t have a concussion or anything, but I do want to get Connor down here to do an EKG to see if it had anything to do with your heart”
You nodded. You really didn’t think it was necessary for your boyfriend to have to look at your heart, but considering Connor was the top radiologist at Med, you weren’t complaining.
“You sit tight,” stated Choi as he stepped out to call for Connor.
“Today was supposed to be a good day” you whispered to yourself.
“And it still will be,” exclaimed Connor as he pulled back the curtain and walked up next to you.
“I don’t know why this is all necessary,” you pouted.
Connor took his stethoscope and put it under your shirt. You felt your heart beating faster due to having your boyfriend's hand under your shirt.
He stopped what he was doing and looked at you, “Y/N, I’m not going to be able to get an accurate read if your heart is beating faster than it was a few seconds ago” Connor stated.
“It’s not my fault,” you shot back.

My #1 post of 2022
Family
Requested by: @kp9983
I was thinking reader being jay and will halsteads child sister and they both are on shift so they ask Kelly to watch her not realizing she’s sick because she tried to hide it to not trouble anyone until she’s very sick and has to tell Kelly so he takes her to med calling both brothers and they come and comfort her because she’s really emotional since she feels guilty over bothering them at work
Jay x Will x Halstead!sister x Firehouse 51 Y/N age: 7
Thanks for the request, I hope you like it!
“Let’s go kiddo! Will and I both have to get to work and we need to drop you by the firehouse before we do,” called your older brother Jay.
Normally you would be ecstatic to be spending the day with Firehouse 51, but today you woke up and your tummy hurt like heck. But you really wanted to spend the day with 51 and Tuesday! So you suck it up, jump off your bed and fast walk into the hallway, where your brothers are putting on their shoes.
“Come on, Y/N, sit on the ground and we can put on your shoes,” stated Jay as he helped you sit on the ground.
He walked away for a second and then reappeared with your twinkle toe shoes and your converse. “Which ones?” he asked. Taking your time to choose, your mouth curved up and down while you thought. Finally pointing to the converse and stating confidently, “those ones!”Jay helped you put them on and you guys were off!
“Thanks again Kelly! I didn’t realize Will had picked up an extra shift this week,” explained Jay, when he dropped you off.
“Not a problem, we love the kid like our own, you know that!” replied Kelly, as he placed a hand on the top of your head and smiled.
After Jay left, you ran and high fived all the firefighters and even Tuesday!
Hermann lifted you up and stated, “the firehouse made pancakes, do you want any?”
You thought for a moment, remembering how your tummy hurt and decided in that little 7 year old brain of yours that pancakes probably weren’t a good idea.
“No thank you,” you sighed, remembering to add the ‘thank you’ part from what Will had taught you.
The firefighters who were around, looked at Hermann and shared the same facial expression. You never turned down pancakes!
“Are you feeling okay kiddo?” asked Mouch.
“Yea, they are really good, we even got some with blueberries in them,” added Mills, who had made those ones special just for you.
You sighed and thought, maybe if you ate something the hurt in your tummy would go away.
“Okay, 1 pancake” you say sadly.
The firefighters erupt in excitement and Hermann throws you in the air! “Let’s go kiddo!” and everyone walks towards the kitchen!
After breakfast, you decided to lay down in the sleeping quarters. Of course Mills let you sleep in his bed, because he, much like the other firefighters, saw you as his little sister. But laying there, you found your tummy didn’t just hurt anymore, but now it felt like it was on fire! And you were beginning to feel hot and cold.
As much as you didn’t want to leave, you slid off the bed and went in search of Kelly or Hermann to tell them you needed to go home.
However before you reached the kitchen, you heard the all too familiar bells and alarms sound, insinuating that there was a fire. So you sighed and walked back to the sleeping quarters to lie down and hope the pain stopped on its own.
You laid in Mill’s bed for what felt like hours, staring at the wall beside you, trying to control your breathing when you began to see black spots painting the wall. The next thing you knew you saw total darkness.
When you awoke, your tummy didn’t hurt anymore, but you felt a cool feeling in your right hand. Looking down, you noticed an IV (that’s what Will told you it was called).
“Y/N! You're awake” cried Jay, as he jumped up from the chair next to you and hugged you!
When he released the hug, he looked at you and smiled sadly.
“What happened Jay Jay?” you asked, not remembering coming to the hospital.
He scooted the chair close to your bed and held your hand and spoke, “You had appendicitis”

“Hailey, fucking hell!”
You groaned as the former pushed another finger inside of you. She’d already worked you up to the edge for second time, with her mouth and her fingers, and it seemed like she was trying for a third. And she was succeeding.
The blonde had a lot of pent up energy ever since you’d completed your undercover mission. In order to bust a drug operation, Voight had sent you to go undercover as a hooker moonlighting as a waitress at this fancy club for schmucks, pervs and rich assholes. And, of course, that meant allowing men to get grabby with you much to the irk of both you and your girlfriend, Hailey.
Her hands twitched as she watched those slimy men put their hands on you through the grainy video that you were secretly recording through a camera hidden in your necklace.
You hated it as much as she did, even more so; wanting nothing more than to slap their hands away and kick them where the sun don’t shine.
The mission lasted until the middle of the night when you’d finally caught a break and had gotten the information you needed. After doing the relative paperwork, Hailey had dragged you back to your shared apartment and, as soon as the door was closed behind you, her hands were on you. But her touch was the only ones you really wanted. Hailey was the only one allowed to lay her hands on your body. After all, you were hers and she was yours.
“Those dicks thinking they could have you. I should have taken you right then and there and showed them who you truly belong to.”
You whined at her words, bucking your hips to drive her fingers deeper into you.
“You’re my beautiful baby. Only I get to see you like this. And only I can make you feel like this. Right, baby?
You nodded frantically, not strong enough to voice any coherent words.
“Who do you belong to?”
“You, daddy!” You moaned, your mind growing hazy when her fingers pressed deliciously against that sweet spot inside you.
Her fingers stilled inside you for a brief moment when the title had slipped past your lips. You’d never called her that before.
Noticing that she’d stopped moving her fingers, you blinked, clearing the cloudiness of your mind when you realised exactly what you had said.
You opened your mouth, embarrassed and ready to apologise when, in one swift, smooth motion, Hailey covered your mouth with a deep kiss and thrust her fingers in you once more.
She buried her face in the crook of your neck, her mouth right near your ear as she started to whisper sweet nothings to you. It was like a switch went off in her mind.
“You’re such a little slut for daddy huh, baby? Only daddy can make you feel this good.”
Her husky whispers came out in hot pants as she brought her thumb to your clit and started to rub harsh non-existent circles on the little nub.
“Come for daddy, slut.”

Halstead and Severide are teaming up but it's not what you probably think 👀
I wrote Partners in Crime, aka part 13 of the Chuckles and Goldilocks... and Freckles! series (it's a collection of 'independent' one-shots and you don't have to necessarily read each of them to follow the stories - though, if you want to, you're very welcome!😚)
Click here to read the story and yeah, hope you like it! 🥰
(It's my first time writing anything Stellaride, let me know if I mess it up ahah)

Caught Out | Connor Rhodes FT Jay Halstead
Requested By Anon [I got a request, it is Connor x Reader x Jay. Reader is a pediatric trauma surgeon and very talented. She and Jay are dating when she finds Jay cheating on her with Hailey. The reader decides to leave Chicago and go to the city Connor is in. A few months later Jay shows up at Connor's door begging for the reader to take him back until he finds out she and Connor are dating and is happier with him.]
Pairings: Jay Halstead x Reader, Jay Halstead x Hailey Upton, Connor Rhodes x Reader
Featuring: Y/n, Jay Halstead, Hailey Upton, Connor Rhodes.
Summary: Y/n finds Jay cheating on her with Hailey and leaves Chicago to go see Connor
Warnings: angst, cheating, nudity, sex [kind of], betrayal, crying, jealousy, mentions of explicit sexual content, errors I missed.
w/c: 1513
Your eyes were heavy with sleep. All you wanted to do was go home and sleep. Especially you wanted to cuddle with Jay. But no, the universe had other plans for you.
A yawn escaped your mouth as you parked your car. Putting the handbrake up. Then turned the car off. You grabbed your work bag from the front seat. Slinging it across your shoulder. You took the keys out of the ignition, as you opened the door. Getting out of the car. Shutting the door and locking the car. You quickly rushed into the apartment complex. Rushing to the apartment you shared with Jay, all the while taking the apartment keys out of the bag.
Once you reached the door. You put the keys into the keyhole. Unlocking the lock.
Your hand grabbing the doorknob. Turning the doorknob. Opening the door, and walking in. you closed the door behind you. Your eyebrows furrow as you heard moaning and squeaking of the mattress coming from the bedroom. Dread filled your body as you slowly walked to the bedroom. Breathing hitching. You peaked at the half-open door. Your hands cupping your mouth. Muffling the gasp. Your heart felt like it was shattering into millions of pieces. As you looked away. Yet the image of Jay on top of Hailey, thrusting into her was burned into your mind.
You turned around. Rushing to the front door. Your gasp must have startled them because you heard the rustling of sheets, a few curse words slipping out of Jay’s mouth. It made you rush to the door faster.
Jay rushed to put his boxers on. Hailey quickly put her clothes on. Guilt washing over them.
“Y/n,” He shouted. As he exited the bedroom door. Hailey trailing after him. He saw you stop at the door. Hand hovering above the doorknob.
You turned around to face him with a look of heartbreak. Tears falling from your eyes like a waterfall. Lip quivering. Jay felt his heart clench. Guilt washing over him like a ton of bricks.
He was about to say something, but he heard footsteps behind him. Your gaze turned to Hailey, looking more crestfallen. You turned around quickly. Grabbing the doorknob and twisting it open. Opening the door and exiting the apartment as well as his life. Tears fell from his eyes, but he only had himself blame….
Tears blurred your vision as you drove out of Chicago. All you had on you was your work bag. Lucky had it had your wallet and phone in it.
You quickly wiped the tears away with the back of your hand. Hearing your phone vibrate constantly. You ignored it. Focusing on the road. Heartache engulfing you. You turned the radio on low hoping it would soothe your heartache, but it didn’t.
It seemed the universe didn’t want you to forget what you just saw. A sad song about cheating played on the radio. It made you burst into tears, as you drove. Doing your best to subside them. The only person who knew you well enough was Connor. So, that’s where you were going. Maybe if you would have picked him and left Chicago with him, instead of turning him down then none of this would have occurred and you wouldn’t have been heartbroken.
Self-doubt started to crawl inside of you. You should have seen the signs. The stolen glances, late nights at work, or what he claimed as work. How your works always put a strain on the relationship. But then anger sets in. he was the one that cheated on you. He was the one that wrecked the relationship. He used to accuse you of cheating on him with Connor before Connor left Chicago, but he was the one that was being unfaithful, he was the hypocrite.
It would have hurt less if it were a random girl, but no it was Hailey. His ex-girlfriend and his partner. You had a feeling this would happen. You just hoped it never did…
It was early morning when you reached Connor’s place. Parking your ear in his driveway. You put the car in park, putting the handbrake up. Turning the car off, taking keys out of the ignition. Then grabbed your bag. Opening the door. Slowly getting out of the car. Shutting the door then locking the car. Walking sheepishly to his door. Heart hammering against your ribcage. Hopefully, you aren’t intruding.
Connor must have heard a commotion outside and came to investigate. The door swinging open as you reached the top step.
Connor looked slightly shocked to see you outside of his door. His shock turned into a concerned look as he took in your appearance.
“Y/n, what happened?” He asked. As he rushed over to you. His hands cupping the side of your face. His touch made you melt. More tears fell from your eyes. Lips trembling.
“He cheated on me with Hailey,” You gasped out. Anger rises inside of Connor. Has Jay lost his mind? He thought to himself.
You fell into Connor. Connor wrapped his arms around you. As you bury your head into his chest. Crying till there were no tears left.
“He doesn’t deserve you,” Connor spoke softly as he rubbed soothing circles on your back.
Connor led you inside of his place. Sitting down with you on the couch. Hugging you close to his chest. Eventually, you told him what you saw. Connor’s jaw ticked as you told him. You eventually fell asleep on Connor’s lap. Not that Connor minded it. Connor starred at you as you slept on his lap. His fingers combing through your hair ever so softly. He loved you, and he was going to prove it to you now that you were no longer with Jay…
TWO MONTHS LATER
You felt two arms wrap around your waist from behind you. Connor pressed himself into your back. While you poured coffee.
“You look so sexy in my shirt,” Connor spoke into your ear. He pressed a soft kiss against the shell of your ear. His beard trickling your earlobe making you giggly.
“Mm... just in your shirt?” You teased. Quirking one eyebrow.
“You look sexy all the time, even sexier when you are naked, underneath me,” He spoke. Voice deepening with lust.
Connor spun you around to face him. You smiled as you saw his eyes darken with lust. Taking your lower lip in between your bottom lip.
“We have work soon,” You spoke. Arching an eyebrow as a warning.
“Then let’s make it a quickie,” He growled out. Before he could kiss you, the doorbell rang, as well as a knock interrupting Connor and you.
Connor let out a frustrated huff. As you made your way to the door.
“If it’s the next-door neighbor, tell then I’m out of sugar,” He spoke. You let out a laugh. Grabbing the doorknob and twisting it open.
You felt your heart leap into your throat. Your eyes were wide as you looked at the person in shock. The person happened to be Jay.
“Jay…” You brokenly gasped out.
“Y/n, I finally found you,” Jay gasped out. He looked like he hadn’t slept in months. Your heart was beating so fast you could barely hear your thoughts. Breathing quickening.
“W…what are you doing here?” You gasped out.
“I want you back, I’m sorry for cheating on you with Hailey,” Jay started to say. Taking a deep breath. When he said Hailey’s name your mind immediately flashed back to the night you saw him cheating on you with her. The words cheating and Hailey stung. It was like he was pouring salt on a wound.
“These past few months have been hell, I’ve been torturing myself these last few months, Hailey isn’t the one I want, it’s you,” Jay confessed. While you stared at him in shock.
You were about to say something when you felt Connor wrap a protective arm around you. Pulling you close to him. Jay looked slightly uncomfortable, confused, and jealous. Jealous of the fact you melted right into Connors touch. Like you felt safe.
Connor glared at Jay. His jaw clenching. He would have punched Jay, for what he put you through, but restrained himself.
“You have a lot of nerve coming here, in fact, you can keep torturing yourself because she doesn’t want you back,” Connor snapped. Speaking for you. You felt your heart flutter. Glad Connor spoke up for you. Because you couldn’t form the words to speak.
She can speak for herself,” Jay growled. Glaring at Connor.
“I am speaking for the both of us, and as her boyfriend, who loves her more than you ever did or could, LEAVE,” Connor growled out. Slamming the door shut, but not before Jay saw Connor give you a soft kiss on the cheek. Your face lighting up with happiness. Jay felt his heart shatter into pieces. He lost you for good. His insecurities and jealousy of Connor and your friendship pushing you towards Connor. Jay felt heartache flood through him, he only had himself to blame…

AN: If anyone had “Cíara writes an upstead fic” in their hiatus bingo, let me know. You should probably buy a lotto ticket.

Slow Dancing

Summary: At a CFD awards gala, Violet makes a decision to go for what makes her happy.
Words: 1.4k
Warnings: alcohol

Violet stared at herself in the mirror, eyeliner perfect and her hair in an updo. Sylvie had convinced her to go to a salon for the two of them to get their hair done together before getting ready for the gala. It was the last thing she wanted to do, but she was getting her formal award so she had to turn up. Once the back was on her earring she stood, slipping into her heels. The dark green satin dress hung perfectly, her makeup neat. She’d be fine.
Apart from wishing that her paramedic chief would spend more time with her. But that was never going to happen, he was right. They needed space.
“Are you ready?” Sylvie called, knocking Violet back to orbit. She came out of the spare room, Sylvie on FaceTime to Matt and the boys.
“Here’s my partner who’s getting an award tonight! You look amazing.” Sylvie grinned and handed over a wine glass to Violet, the younger woman looking at the phone screen.
“Hey Casey, Ben, Griffin. Having a good night?”
“It’s only four here, but it’s good. Heading for dinner in a while. Congratulations on the award, you deserve it!”
It was a quick goodbye to them as they were ready to leave, Violet knocking back the last of her wine as the cab driver called to say they were downstairs.
The entire drive she could feel her nerves rise, Sylvie able to tell and holding her hand. It would be fine. It had to be. They walked in together, each receiving drinks tokens and looking around.
“You ok?” Sylvie asked, Violet nodding.
“Fine. I just hate being the centre of attention. But it’ll be fine.”
“You deserve this. Don’t panic.” Boden came up behind her, a hand on her shoulder that nearly made her jump. “Chief Hawkins has been singing your praises about that rescue. He wants you to know you deserve it. We all know you’re a fantastic medic, Violet.”
“Thanks. It means a lot.” The conversations went from there, and as the dinner was served she sat at the table with her shift. Everyone turned up to celebrate her, congratulating her on the award. But once the dry beef and over salted potatoes had been eaten it was time for the awards. Violet was one of three paramedics being awarded, the only one for a resuscitation. She watched Hawkins walk onto the stage, her heart doing a flip flop as she watched him in his well fitting suit and bow tie.
“As Paramedic Field Chief I’ve been honoured to do ride alongs with different paramedics under my tenure. And on my own ride along with Paramedic Violet Mikami I saw just how talented she was. We were called to the birth of a child who wasn’t breathing, and I watched her intubate and revive him after meconium ingestion. He made a full recovery, and in six weeks has gained several pounds and according to his mother is growing like a weed. They named him Joseph Mikami, as a way to honour the paramedic who saved his life. It’s not as impressive as naming an infant after her, but I’m proud that CFD is honouring her with the Clinical Resuscitation Award. Paramedic Violet Mikami, of Firehouse 51!”
The crowd cheered, everyone at the 51 tables standing to clap. She could hear Capp whistling as she walked up, smiling and taking the hand Hawkins offered for a shake. There were several others on the Paramedic Chief level there who she shook with before Hawkins pinned the award to her dress. Flashes popped for photos, Evan’s hand at the small of her back and all Violet could focus on was him beside her, the warmth of his hand through the thin fabric. There was a spark as he touched her and she tried to ignore it, but it was so difficult to do.
Finally she could get off the stage, sitting back down to watch everyone else get their awards. Once the medals were given out it was time for mingling and dancing, and all Violet wanted was to go home. But instead she went to the bathroom for a deep breath and a break.
She knew the step back between them was a good idea, that dating your boss was a bad idea. Or if it was even an ok idea there could be problems. It didn’t stop the heart wanting what it wanted. And what her heart was so desperate for was Evan Hawkins. She’d never felt this way about anyone before, she’d never wanted to even just hold someone’s hand that much.
There was a knock on the cubicle door, and she tilted her head back to blink back the emotions.
“One minute.”
“Take your time, I’m here.” It was Sylvie, and Violet tried to smile at her, but it was a fake smile. “You really like him, don’t you?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Hawkins. A blind man could see how the two of you are, and how jealous Gallo is of the two of you. What’s going on?”
Violet shrugged, taking a moment before responding. “I asked if he has feelings. He said we need to take a step back. So I’m taking a step back.”
She studied Sylvie’s face, realising that she’d seen her PIC with a similar look on her face before. Except then it was because Violet had talked to her about Casey.
“I don’t know Hawkins too well, but he’s a Good man. And yeah you can make excuses about his job, your job, all of it. But you both deserve to be happy. And I think that he could make you happy, Partner. I really do.”

Coffee At Midnight
Tumblr media
Summary: While Sylvie is on furlough, Violet has to deal with floaters. But the final floater makes her think of painkillers, bubbly water, and Goodness.
Words: 1.2k
Warnings: none
Walking onto the app floor Violet took a glance at 61, the Leslie Elizabeth Shay memorial shining in the dull January light. It was her final shift with a floater, and she couldn't wait for Sylvie to get back. Her friend was enjoying her time off, and Violet had gotten multiple photos of Sylvie, Casey, and the boys at various Portland landmarks. But dealing with different floaters thanks to the paramedic shortage was killing her slowly.
She made it into the changing room, putting her bag in her locker and pulling back her hair. Once that was done she went to the briefing room, but before she could Boden called her into his office, someone else already there in a paramedic uniform.
"Mikami! As you know there's a serious paramedic shortage right now. Chief Hawkins has agreed to do the shift with you so he can keep 61 on the road. Will that work?"
No. No, no, no, no, no. This was the exact opposite of what Violet wanted to happen. She wanted to forget Evan Hawkins ever existed, the way he'd looked at her after he'd announced Sylvie was funded. But it was hard to do when she looked at his brown eyes and he smiled at her.
"Yeah, sounds good. I can show you around 61 so you can see where everything is?"
"Sounds good. Is there a spare locker I can use?" Violet nodded, and they left to go to the locker room, pointing out the floater locker at the end. He nodded and went to speak, but before he could the bells went off.
It was a busy shift, and she didn't get a chance to talk to him about much as they worked. In and out, restocking and getting everything done. But when they sat in the cab, Hawkins - Evan, as he insisted she called him while they worked - asking how her holidays had been. She shared about it being the first one since her dad had died in the pandemic, that it had been weird but they got through it. He offered condolences, making Violet smile weakly. They stopped to pick up coffees, and he ordered a bubbly water in the drive thru, passing it across. He refused to let her pay for their drinks, waving it off with a smile.
She hadn't felt this way for almost a year, since she and Gallo had first had their thing. But that was long gone, and no matter what Sylvie and Ritter said she didn't have feelings for him anymore. He was a friend, but he annoyed her like a brother and she didn't want to date him again. But with Evan it was different.
She'd joked with Sylvie that a man who gave you bubbly water and painkillers was a man to keep, but finding out everything that he'd done for her while she was in hospital had meant a lot. He'd done it without thinking, leaving the cup for her there. It was one of the sweetest things anyone had ever done for her.
The shift passed both slowly and quickly, and when they got back at eleven he went to sleep in Sylvie's bed. Violet stayed sitting in the common room, watching the room empty as people drifted to the bunks. But she stayed in her seat, a cooling mug of coffee in her hand.
She didn’t know what she wanted anymore. If it was six weeks ago her jealousy over Cara had burned through her stomach, three months ago she’d comforted Sylvie when Casey left for Oregon. But the idea that her feelings could be so muddled and confusing had never entered her mind.
“Penny for them.” Mouch slid over a fresh mug, taking in Violet’s expression. The older man sat next to her, his own mug in his hand.
“I’m fine. Missing Brett.”
“We all do. But you’re different than usual. Spit it out. Something about Gallo?”
Violet laughed, covering her mouth to muffle the sound as Mouch stared at her. That this was her immediate reaction confirmed that she was totally over him. But made her worry more about it.
“Or how working with Hawkins is? Is he a good paramedic?”
“He’s great…can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
Violet took a deep breath, taking a sip before admitting it.
“How bad does it look if you date someone above you in the chain of command?”
It was silent, the only noise from the tv in the background as she watched Mouch process her words. His jaw opened slightly, and Violet waited to hear what he’d say, only slightly terrified of it.
“I’ve seen it happen, successfully. And I’ve seen the same relationship also crumble with it. Casey’s first wife was his candidate and they ended things. Then they got back together. And people looked at them oddly but they made it work. Her being on his truck didn’t end their relationship. Your partner for the day?”
“Maybe.”
“He’s a good guy. His family are good people, I knew his dad for years. If there’s something between you, I think you should go for it.” He stretched, standing up. “I’m going to bed. Enjoy.”
Violet cleaned the mugs, putting them in the dishwasher and heading to the bunk room. She passed Evan’s bed, his arm over his face as he dozed. Getting into bed she put the pillow over face, wanting to yell into it. But as she closed her eyes the bells went off.

So, abortion is constitutionally illegal…
Hey, I’m Cíara, and I grew up with a constitutional ban on abortion that wasn’t overturned till 2018. So I know a thing or two about dealing with this. Here’s some tips.
Mutual aid funds. Donate, donate, donate. If you’ve got some spare cash, donate. They help low income pregnant people access abortions and are the easiest way to help provide access quickly.
Women Help is a provider of abortion pills for places where abortion is illegal. It comes in the post and should help.
If you do have a pill abortion and need to seek medical attention - you’re miscarrying. You’re miscarrying a wanted baby. Do all of your searches on incognito mode, delete any abortion related browser history before getting medical help. Will your doctors and nurses mostly want to help you? Yes, but you shouldn’t risk it anyway.
Make a note of states that still have abortion. Illinois passed a bill in 2019 saying that even if Roe or Casey fell abortion would still be legal there. It’s safe there.
Make a list of close to the border abortion clinics. This will be harder for the Great Lakes area (but you have Illinois so that helps). Off the top of my head cities to check out are Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Windsor, the GTA, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and Saint John in Canada. In Mexico abortion is only legal on a state by state basis so be aware.
Organise, organise, organise. Don’t leave people behind in your organising. Trans men and people outside the gender binary can get pregnant. It’s not their fault, don’t throw them under the fucking bus.
Your first question to every politician, at every town hall, canvassing event, and more, is “will you decriminalise abortion and recognise it as necessary healthcare?” And you stick to that message. Make politicians dread seeing you because they know. Call their congressional office, write weekly letters. Flood them with “I am your constituent and this is what I want”.
And do that on the state level too! Constant communication.
I am so sorry to everyone who is about to go through this. Find your group. Organise. Protest. You can do this.

Broken
Tumblr media
Summary: After your boyfriend and friend break your heart, you’re left to try pick up the pieces of what happened. You don’t expect to fall for the fourth person in this twisted love affair, but Adam makes you feel less broken.
Words: 5.7k
Warnings: infertility, talk of difficulty conceiving, pregnancy, infidelity, alcohol, angst with a happy ending
--
Pulling into your parking spot you threw your head back in the seat, staring at the car roof. Your doctors words kept going around and around in your head.
“There’s no physical reason you’re not pregnant yet.”
It had been eighteen months of trying, casually at the start but more seriously when it hadn’t happened. When the worry was too much that something was wrong. But you’d both been tested, Jay got back that his sperm were good quality. You physically shouldn’t have had a problem. But you still weren’t pregnant and it hurt so damn much.
Thumbing your engagement ring you got out and went to the elevator, wondering how you were supposed to tell Jay that they needed to run more tests, that your body just didn’t want to have a child.
As you got to your front door your fiancés work partner was standing there, Kim looking sick to her stomach as she waited. When she saw you her face paled, and you went straight to her.
“Kim, hey! Is Jay inside?”
“Yeah. I wanted to talk to you first. I need to tell you something.”
“Can it wait? I’ve had the day from hell.” She shook her head and you were immediately worried, watching her.
“It can’t. Look, I don’t know how to say this so I’m just ripping the bandaid off. Six weeks ago, Jay and I got drunk and slept together. I found out last week I’m pregnant with his baby.”
The words made you stumble, holding onto the wall for support. He’d cheated on you. He’d cheated on you and one night with someone else meant that he was about to become a father and it wasn’t your child. It wasn’t your baby. Because you were broken and this proved it if one time meant he could get someone else pregnant. Kim went to grab your arm but you shook her off.
“Don’t touch me. Don’t you dare touch me. You’re one of my best friends. You were going to be a bridesmaid. How could you?” Your voice cracked on the final word, tears beginning to roll down your cheeks.
“I didn’t mean to. We were drunk, it was a bad case. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
“I don’t want to see you outside of work again.” You turned and unlocked the door, closing it firmly behind you to leave Kim outside. But instead of a moment of peace, Jay stood and opened his arms for you.
“Hey, how are you? Where were you I missed you?” He came over for a hug but you sidestepped him, staring at the man you loved so much it hurt.
“What part of me wasn’t enough? Why did you cheat? Is it because I can’t give you a baby? And now you get to have one with her?”
“Baby, please I didn’t mean to. It just happened.”
“It doesn’t just happen! She was going to be my bridesmaid. Every time I got my period and sobbed she comforted me. And one night? One night and you get her pregnant? How could you?” You watched as the full force of your words hit him and you asked the question you weren’t sure you wanted an answer to. “Do you love me anymore?”
“Of course I loved you!” His face dropped as he realised it was in past tense, and your tears flowed harder.
“Loved. Not love. I should have known you couldn’t love someone who can’t do the thing she’s supposed to do. I’m gonna pack a bag. Tell me when you’re in work so I can get the rest of my things.”
You went straight to your room, staring at your bed. At the artwork the two of you had picked, at the bed you’d made that morning. The bed you thought you’d sleep in for the rest of your life. But you pulled out a bag and threw clothes in, just wanting to make sure that you had enough to keep you going. When it was done you grabbed your tablet, your chargers, your toothbrush and shampoo.
Jay was standing there as you walked out, staring at you with watery eyes.
“Baby, please. It was a mistake. We can get through it.”
“No, we can’t. I was going to have your child. I spent today getting told I need even more tests because there’s no reason I shouldn’t be pregnant. And then with one night you get Kim pregnant? You told me she and Adam split up but not why. That’s why, isn’t it?” He nodded and it broke your heart fully in two. “I can’t do this. Because every time you had custody of that child, I’d be angry. And that innocent baby doesn’t deserve the sins of the parents inflicted on it.”
You held out your left hand, staring at the engagement ring there. The one Jay had proposed to you with a grin and a plea for you to marry him. Pulling it off felt so, so wrong. But you did, your finger bare for the first time in nearly two years as you set it down on the coffee table.
“We’re over. I’ll ask someone in Intelligence to tell me when you’re at work so I can pack my things. If you could box them up I’d appreciate it, but you don’t have to.”

---
You looked up from where you were sprawled on the couch, fiddling with your phone. Jay was sitting at the table, a small frown across his face as he pored over case notes.
Jay usually didn’t bring his work home with him but they’d just closed a big case and he had spent a whole week in the district. So instead of spending more time there to finish the paperwork, Jay had opted to bring it home instead.
You smiled to yourself just as Jay looked up. “Sorry babe.” He said, making a little face at the papers strewn across the table.
Chuckling, you climbed off the couch and moved towards him. You stood behind him, looping your arms around his shoulders, resting your chin on his shoulder. “I missed you.” You whispered.
Jay turned slightly, tugging you so that you now landed in his lap.
“Missed you too.” He whispered, smiling as one of his arms snaked around your waist, holding you securely to him, another hand reaching up to cup your cheek. “Sorry I’ve been busy.”
You shook your head, smiling.
You’d been dating for a while but no one else knew. Both of you had agreed to keep it on the down low, partly because of your age difference. Even though you had agreed you’d keep it quiet at least for the first few months, it had been a lot more than that and it had been going so well that you didn’t really want to purposefully invite anyone into this world that Jay and you had created for yourselves. Rather than keeping it a secret, you guys just hadn’t made the effort to tell anyone or publicize it to the world. This also meant that when he was stuck at the district, you didn’t get to see him but on such days, Jay was always mindful about checking in.
“What’s on your mind?” Jay asked.
“Just thinking I’m lucky to have you.” You responded, leaning in to try to give him a hug. Instead, Jay stroked your cheek and pressed his lips to yours. “Now, I really need to finish this.”
You laughed. “Go forth.”
---
Jay had taken a few well-deserved days of furlough, which he had mostly spent curled up with you. You didn’t have any complaints, it had been just what you both needed.
But Intelligence couldn’t catch a break. It was Jay’s first day back and now, he was already walking up to a crime scene.
Jay pushed the yellow crime scene tape upwards, letting Hailey walk through ahead of him before following behind her.
“What do we have?” Jay asked, approaching the spot where Adam and Kim were standing.
Kim turned. “Kate Whitewood, 22, stabbed multiple times.”
“She’s not in the system. No priors, nothing.” Adam added.
“No belongings on her?” Voight asked, looking around.
Adam shook his head. Jay frowned. “There’s barely any blood here.”
Kevin nodded, jogging forward to join them. “This is probably just the dump site. She must have been killed elsewhere.”
Hailey stood from where she had bent to examine the body. “She has defensive wounds on her. Maybe we’ll get lucky and find skin under her fingernails.”
Jay bent forward slightly. “What are those? Marks around her neck? We need to get her to the ME to get the exact cause of death.”
“Kim, bag her hands and get forensics to run a deluxe.” Voight said, as Kim nodded.
“My CI works this street, let me see what I can find out.” Jay said, turning away.
---
“So Kate was last seen at this bar right in town.” Hailey said, walking in and sticking a screenshot onto the board, which showed a camera view of the street outside the bar.
Kate could be seen on the image, her head turned slightly as she waved to someone, a man standing by her side. Hailey tapped the image.
“We can’t find this guy. His face is always turned away from the camera, facial recognition is out.”
Voight nodded. “Jay, have you heard from your CI?”
Jay nodded, resting slightly against Hailey’s desk, his arms crossed in front of him. “My guy says there haven’t been any deals going down. I think we can rule out drugs or gangs. Streets have been quiet ever since that big bust we did last month.”
“It was 28 degrees out last night, ME couldn’t find the exact time of death. But there were signs she was raped, signs of asphyxiation and five penetration wounds from a knife.” Kevin said, opening the file he had gotten from the medical examiner earlier.
Voight turned to Kim. “Who was she?”
Kim sighed. “Kate was a hard worker, she had just started her job as a receptionist at a dentist’s office in South Loop. Dad’s MIA, Mum’s remarried and relocated to New York so she’s living on her own.”
“Have we found who she was with last night?”
Adam nodded. “I’ve gone through her phone. Looks like she was meeting her friend Grace at the club last night.”
“We need to talk to her. I want to know about the last day of Kate’s life. Timeline. Check all sex offenders in the area. Comb her social media. Let’s go.” Voight instructed.
---
Jay knocked on the main door, glancing sideways at Hailey. The door swung open.
“Grace Archer? I’m Detective Upton, this is Detective Halstead, can we come in?” Hailey asked.
She furrowed her brows. “What’s this about?”
“You’re friends with Kate Whitewood?” Hailey asked, without directly answering her question. She nodded and without missing a beat, Hailey continued, “We need to ask you a few questions about last night.”
Grace stepped back to let them in, her face falling as she led them to the sitting room.
“I heard from her parents. The whole thing’s horrible.” Grace whispered, wrapping her hands around herself.
“Can you tell us what you remember?” Jay asked.
Grace looked up. “Kate’s boyfriend had broken up with her a few months ago, so I took her out. She needed to get out again.”
“Were you approached by anyone?” Hailey asked.
“Several.” She answered.
“Anyone that stood out?”
Grace paused, trying to recall. “Kate didn’t even really want to go. She barely looked at the guys… except…”
Hailey sat up a little. “There must have been something about this guy that she left with, something unique. We have a photo of him on the surveillance tape. Flashy?”
Grace nodded, “Yeah, he had this like... attitude… like he was hitting on us but he was making a joke of it at the same time.” She paused. “The last thing she told me was that she had a great time… I shouldn’t have forced her to come out.”
“This isn’t your fault.” Hailey leaned over and patted Grace comfortingly on the arm. “Thanks for talking to us. Please call us if you think of anything else.”
As Jay walked out of Grace’s house with Hailey, he looked at his partner. “This guy’s confident, he’s smooth and it doesn’t look like he knew Kate or Grace.”
---
For the rest of the day, the team had almost combed through the whole of Kate’s whereabouts before she had disappeared and all they had was a big fat nothing.
Jay typed a quick text to you to let you know that he wasn’t going to be able to come over tonight.
You read the text, smiling a little. Jay was busy but it was cute that he always kept you informed. You stopped walking, typing back a reply to tell him it was okay and to do what he had to do, before you kept her phone back into your pocket.
You walked along the street, the same street you walked on every night, frowning a little. You turned around, scanning the street behind you.
You could swear that it was like someone was watching you, or following you. But the street was empty. This wasn’t the first time you had had this feeling - like the little hairs on the back of your neck were standing but you had nothing to back up this feeling you had.
Holding your bag tighter against you, you pushed yourself forward, quickening your footsteps, only letting up as you passed the safety of your apartment building’s front door.
As you passed the threshold of your apartment and closed the door behind you, you pulled out your phone, staring at it for a while. Part of you wanted to call Jay, to hear his voice and have him tell you that you were just tired, imagining things. But the rational part of your brain convinced yourself that everything was okay, reminding you that Jay was so busy and deep in a case, he really shouldn’t have to worry about you.
Ultimately, you put your phone on the counter, chuckling at yourself. Maybe you really were too tired.
---
By the next morning, another body had turned up, not two streets away from the first dump site.
Jay felt an uneasy feeling spread in the pit of his stomach as he stared at the photo of the new victim that was already up on the board. They had a serial killer in Chicago and this guy’s victim type had physical characteristics that were scarily similar to you.
“Jay.” Hailey broke Jay out of his thoughts. “Emma Green, 23, strangulation marks, six stab wounds.”
Jay turned to his partner and nodded. “Did they go to the same club?”
Hailey handed Jay a file. “No, but look at what we picked up on the surveillance camera.” Jay opened the file, studying the photo.
“This is our guy isn’t it?” He pointed at a male figure who was standing next to their second victim, his face still hidden from the camera, wearing a plain cap.
“Hey guys, I might have found a link.” Kim said, walking in. “I checked the employee records and there’s a bartender that works in both clubs and he was on shift on each day our victims went missing. He’s got a prior for aggravated assault and harassment.”
“We’ll take it.” Jay said, grabbing his jacket and heading out of the district.
Hailey fell into step next to him, glancing at him. “Jay, you okay?”
Jay nodded. “Let’s just get this son of a bitch.”
They travelled the rest of the way in silence. Hailey seemed to pick up that this case was affecting Jay differently but she didn’t press further, allowing Jay to lead the way into the closed club.
“Ben Carlton?”
The bartender looked up from where he was, his eyes falling onto the police badge that was hung around Jay’s neck.
In a sudden motion, he ducked out and ran.
“Hey, stop!” Jay yelled, as both he and Hailey launched themselves after him, Hailey shooting out the front door to try to head him off.
“5021 George, I have a suspect fleeing on foot.” Jay called into his radio, sprinting after the bartender.
The bartender barely made it onto the next street before Hailey flung herself at him around the corner, rolling onto the ground as Jay pulled out his gun. “Don’t move!” He yelled, as Hailey pulled the bartender to his feet.
“Let’s go.” Jay snarled.
---
“It wasn’t me!” Ben yelled as he sat in the interrogation room, facing Jay and Hailey.
Jay sighed internally, watching Ben’s reactions and the way he was answering the questions Hailey was shooting at him.
“Those were mistakes, I didn’t do this!” He yelled again.
Jay pushed himself upright, getting up from where he was leaning against the wall and pushing the photos of the victims onto the table. “This. Look at this. We can place these girls at the bars you worked at just before they died.”
“Look.” Ben said, looking up at Jay. “I saw them but they left before I even finished my shift.”
Jay glanced at Hailey. “Who did they leave with?” Hailey asked.
Ben looked from Hailey to Jay. “Look, I don’t know the guy, he’s not a regular. But he’s white, about their age. I noticed him because he headed for them the moment that he walked in. Like he knew they were there.”
Before Jay or Hailey moved, a knock came from the door.
“You guys gotta see this.” Adam said, sticking his head in.
“Sit tight.” Jay said to Ben, following Adam outside, where Kevin was waiting as well.
Kevin handed the file to Jay. “We got another one.” Jay flipped open the file, which told him what he already feared. Another victim, of a physical type that not only matched the first two victims but also you.
Jay looked up. “His cooling off period is getting shorter. We need to get this son of a bitch.”
---
The feeling was getting a little stronger that someone had been watching you.
You glanced over your shoulder but as usual the street was empty. Maybe you needed to stop staying late.
You turned back towards the front. There were sounds of footsteps but you swallowed the lump in your throat, quickening your pace as discreetly as you could.
It definitely felt like someone was following you now. You were almost running by the time you rounded the corner, colliding with someone.
You gave a yelp of surprise.
“Y/N!”
You had collided with Jay.
You let out a breath, spinning around to look over your shoulder.
“What’s going on? You okay?” Jay’s eyes snapped from you to the empty street behind you.
You turned back to look at Jay. Now that he was standing in front of you, it didn’t seem that scary anymore - maybe you had imagined the whole thing.
You shook your head, taking one last glance behind you. “What are you doing here? You finished the case?”
Jay smiled but the smile didn’t really reach his eyes. “Just wanted to check in on you. I have to go back soon.”
You reached for his hand without saying anything and that’s how the both of you walked back to your apartment, your hand clenched securely in his, almost like the both of you had a tight bubble around you.
You could tell Jay’s mind was far away, and it was even more unlike him to come see you in the middle of a case. You knew there was something troubling him but you weren’t one to press. Jay would tell you when he felt he could or he wanted to.
Instead, you just squeezed his hand.
Almost as if you were prying him from his thoughts, Jay looked at you and smiled. He pulled you closer to him, tucking you under his arm.
“You’re okay, right?” You asked, without looking up at him, just as he escorted you to your door.
Jay turned to look at you and nodded. “I will be, once this case is over.” He leaned forward to give you a kiss. “If anything happens, you call me, okay? No matter what.”
You raised an eyebrow but nodded at him, watching him disappear into the elevator before you retreated back into your apartment.
---
Intelligence had been tirelessly chasing down leads but they now had four bodies and Voight was getting pressure to solve this quickly as well. They needed a break in this case and fast.
“Okay, let’s regroup, what do we have so far?” Voight barked.
“All four victims were raped and found with multiple stab wounds. We know he picks up his victims from bars and appears non-threatening enough that his victims are willing to leave with him.” Jay said, getting up.
Hailey headed to the board, frowning. “We dumped their phones but we weren’t able to find any connection between the victims other than their physical type.” Hailey cast a look at Jay, which Voight didn’t miss. “I think he’s working his way up to something.”
“Hey guys?” Kim spoke up as she walked back in, flipping open the file sitting on her desk. “I went back over the first murder to see if we missed anything. Look at this.”
Kim pulled in her chair, zooming into the photo. “This badge here on his jacket, it’s barely visible so we missed it the first few times. I sent it to the lab to see if they could enhance the image and this is what I got.”
Kim clicked and up popped the crest of a high school. “Look, it’s not just a general badge. Look at the year.”
“Okay, that is the crest for Lincoln High. It’s a jacket given to those who graduated that year.” Kevin said, frowning at it.
“I’ll run the list of students who graduated in that year.” Jay barked, heading straight for his desk, his fingers flying across his keyboard.
Cross-checking was the worst job ever but the moment Jay’s eyes landed on your name on the list of graduates, he pulled it together, eliminating the women, men who had moved out of state or country, until finally he only had three names on the list.
“Okay, I have a Steven Miller, Charles Shoemaker and John Marlin.” Jay finally spoke up as everyone looked up. “But only Steven Miller has priors.”
“For harassment, sexual misconduct, and attempted assault. Sarge, this has to be our guy.” Jay looked up at Voight.
“Do we have an LKA?” Voight asked.
“Already on it.” Adam said.
“Go pick him up.” Adam nodded, motioning to Kevin as they headed out.
Something was bugging Jay. Steven Miller. That name was…
Fuck.
Jay pushed back his chair, entering Voight’s office without knocking and closing the door behind him.
“Sarge.”
Voight looked up, frowning a little at the look on Jay’s face. He put down his pen and leaned back in his chair, looking up at Jay.
“I’ve heard Miller’s name before. It was bugging me, but I remember now.”
Voight sat up straighter.
“I’m seeing his ex-girlfriend.” The words slipped past Jay’s lips. “Sarge, everything makes sense now. The physical type, the way he’s building up because his actual target…” Jay trailed off.
You had told Jay about Steven just once. You hadn’t gone into detail but you had told Jay about the short period that you had been together with Steven – his need for control over all aspects of your life, how he had always been a little rough, how he hadn’t taken any form of rejection well, and how you’d ended it the day he struck you.
“Take Hailey.”
Jay was already halfway to the door.
---
You had left early today.
It had been a while since you had done such an early shift but you’d been feeling more and more uneasy while walking home at night and the news coverage on the murders that were happening at the moment didn’t help.
You didn’t need Jay to tell you that you looked exactly like those girls who had been murdered. It was clear as day.
You fiddled with the key in the lock, opening the door.
You felt your heart drop into your stomach as you registered the person standing in front of you. In your house.
“Steven.” You muttered, your voice trembling, barely registering the butt of a gun heading towards your temple before it went dark.
---
Hailey hadn’t said anything but she knew something was off.
“Jay, what’s going on?” She asked. “How do you know this girl’s the target?”
Jay didn’t answer but pressed harder on the accelerator, gripping the steering wheel so hard, his knuckles were white. The ringing tone going off through his bluetooth speaker in the car making him feel even worse.
“Jay.” Hailey said again. “I’m your partner.”
Jay glanced at her now. “She’s my girlfriend.”
Hailey’s eyebrows shot up. “I didn’t even know you were seeing someone.”
Jay let a beat of silence passed. “Miller’s her ex. I should have seen the signs, the physical type, everything, I…”
“Jay. She’ll be fine. Come on.” Hailey reassured him, as he turned his truck onto the familiar street.
“She’s still not answering.” Jay said, through gritted teeth. He’d been trying to call you since he had left the station.
Without hesitation, Jay bounded up the stairs, Hailey right behind him. From down the corridor, Jay could already tell your door was slightly ajar.
“Hang back.” Jay whispered, pulling out his service weapon.
Jay quietly approached the door. “Y/N?” He opened the door with his foot, freezing as his eyes landed on you, sitting in a chair in the middle of the room, your eyes frantic as Steven held a knife to your throat from where he stood behind you.
Jay gritted his teeth, using his foot to slam the door shut, knowing that Hailey would know what to do.
“Step away from her.” Jay growled, pointing his gun directly at Steven.
Steven smiled. “I was wondering when you’d arrive. Put that down.”
Jay grinded his teeth but didn’t move. You felt the cold blade of the knife press against your skin and inhaled sharply.
“Put. It. Down.” Steven repeated.
“Okay, okay.” Jay said, glancing at you before putting his hands above his head, disarming his gun and putting it down onto the floor.
Steven smiled again, tucking a stray hair behind your ear.
“Don’t you fucking touch her.” Jay growled.
“I don’t think you’re in a position to tell me what to do.” Steven answered.
“Jay, I’m sorry.” You whispered.
Jay looked straight at you. “It’s going to be okay. You focus on me, you hear me? I’m right here.”
“We broke up a long time ago, what the hell are you doing?” You asked. You were afraid, hell you were trembling, but this was crazy and you had to help Jay to find a way out of this.
“We wouldn’t be broken up if he hadn’t come between us.” Steven snarled, moving closer towards you, his lips almost touching your ear.
Jay growled. “Leave her alone.”
Steven looked back up at Jay again.
“What, you mean don’t do this?” Steven asked, crushing his lips against yours.
“Don’t you fucking touch her!” Jay yelled. “Is that what you did? How you forced yourself on all the other girls? What do you want, Steven? What are you trying to accomplish?”
“All I wanted was to be with Y/N! But you took her.” He spat.
“So you decided to go on a rampage?” Jay asked. You saw him twitch like he was looking for something so you started talking, as much as it made you want to gag.
“Steven, why didn’t you just talk to me?” You asked, trying to distract him.
“Talk? All you care about is him!” He yelled, lifting the knife and pointing it at Jay.
It happened in a split second.
The moment he lifted the knife, Jay yelled, “Now, Y/N!”
You threw yourself forward, covering your head with your hands as you heard the gunshots go off, just two. You weren’t sure who was shooting but you didn’t move until you heard Jay’s voice again.
“Y/N, it’s okay, it’s over.” Jay whispered.
You looked up, Jay’s face hovering above you.
“Jay…”
Jay nodded, “It’s okay, come here.”
Jay pulled his arms around you.
“He…” Jay shook his head, shielding your view of Steven’s now motionless body. “Don’t look back, come on.”
Jay tried to lead you out of the apartment, barely making it to the main door before his teammates appeared. “Jay!” Kevin called, as he spotted both of you.
Jay nodded. “Thanks.” Kevin nodded, his eyes lingering on the way Jay was holding you close to his side before making way for Jay to lead you back down to the ground floor where the ambulances were waiting.
Jay led you all the way to the waiting paramedics, not even leaving your side to get himself checked.
You weren’t hurt, not really. There was a little open cut from where Steven had pressed the blade a little too hard when he had been agitated but other than that you were fine. Well, that, and that disgusting feeling that came with remembering how Steven had pressed his lips against yours.
Voight approached you and Jay. Jay squeezed your hand. “I’ll be right back.” You smiled and nodded.
Jay and Voight talked in low voices until Voight turned to look at you. “And she’s okay?”
Jay nodded. “Yeah, she is. I just need to…”
“Do what you need to do. We’ll finish up here.” Voight said, nodding and clapping Jay on the back.
---
The paramedics had dressed the wound on the scene before Jay had brought you back to his apartment.
After getting you into a clean change of clothes and some warm food in you, you had ended up back in your favourite place in the world – on Jay’s couch, in Jay’s apartment, encircled in Jay’s arms.
You lay your head on Jay’s chest.
“So this was all because of me?” You asked in a low voice.
Jay sat up, looking at you. “What?”
“He killed all those women… because of me. I got them killed.” You whispered.
“No, no, baby.” Jay propped himself up, but didn’t let you go. “This is not your fault. Steven he… he did this, not you.”
You looked up at him. “He even… in front of you… he…” You could feel tears welling up in your eyes, you felt disgusting. He’d kissed you, he’d done it in front of Jay and he’d ruined everything.
You hadn’t said that much but Jay just tilted your chin upwards and kissed you. “Jay…”
“I’ll take it all away.” Jay whispered. “I’m sorry, I should have been there sooner.”
You shook your head, swiping away the tears that had slid down your cheeks.
Jay cupped your cheek again, pulling you into his chest. You balled your hand around his shirt, gripping at Jay.
“It’s okay, I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.” Jay whispered.
“I’ll never let anyone touch you ever again.” He half snarled, still caressing you gently.
You leaned into his embrace, closing your eyes as the sound of Jay’s heartbeat gently lulled you back into the feeling of safety and security.

Tumblr media
the situation was unusual to say the least.
you had a rough upbringing. dancing at a strip club for quick cash is what got you through most days. it was all in all a shady place to be at. you didn't like to sit around there. just quickly going in there, dancing then returning home if you didn't had any other plans that night.
you didn't know how you found yourself in the sudden position you were in right now.
sitting in one of the offices with intelligence upstairs. a mug of coffee was in front of you, luke warm because your nerves were shot. you glanced down at your nails. a chipped black that you had to repaint soon.
your fake lashes were stilled glued and your winged eyeliner was probably a little smudged, which was to be expected when you had been there for a few hours.
the club you now formerly worked at was into some bad stuff. drugs, money, and a pinch of trafficking is what currently had you in shock. how easily you could have been picked up by the creeps that hung around there.
"ruzek! come here." hank yelled. he was in his office with the fbi. they were working with intelligence since they've been tracking the ring for a couple of months now.
you heard them talking on the other side of the wall while detective upton sat with you. she knew you had nothing more to say but was with you for comfort. she and ruzek had a soft spot for you.
you were a little naïve but somewhere in the back of your mind, you knew. you had known a little about what was going down. upton and burgess helped you because you had put it in a box in the back of your mind instead of processing the information. they wrote down any information that helped them, which it did.
you were going to be placed in a off the record house soon for a few months to make sure nobody knew where you were or that you had told them valuable information about the place you worked at.
ruzek walked in a few minutes later with a grin. "looks like we're going to be around each other for a while longer." he seemed happy about it. you weren't sure why he thought you were somebody to be around but nodded anyways, humoring him.
"what'd voight say?" she mumbled, looking at ruzek.
"i'm going to take y/n to the safe house while the deal goes down to make sure nobody knows about or comes for her." he said, speaking in a low tone while glancing in your direction.
she patted your hands in a kind gesture. "stay safe out there y/n. i'd like to get to know you better after this, if that's okay with you? you seem like a good person and friend." you tilted your head up and smiled at her.
"i'd like that, thanks upton."
"hailey." she corrected you, showing her first step of friendship.
"thanks, hailey upton." you joked, smirking and she shook her head playfully before walking out.
"ready to go?" the other cute blonde asked.
you stood up, walking to the counter and dumped your coffee in the sink. "as ready as i'll ever be i guess."
he gave you a small smile and gestured for you to walk out first. "how gentlemanly of you."
he chuckled. "i try!"
the both of you walked out to the dark blue dodge and you got in the passenger seat, buckling yourself in before he did the same and took off. "so, how far is this place?" you asked, adjusting the a/c vent to the side of you, so it was blasting directly on you.
you hoped the air would wake you up a bit. "not far. maybe eight minutes out?" he scratched the back of his neck, thinking and estimated.
"oh okay." you replied, the next few minutes were of silence until you walked up the sidewalk and to the front door.
"so i know this is technically an off the books house but i'd like to clear the house anyway, just to make sure. once we get in i want you to close the door and only use one lock until i say it's okay."
you nodded. "in case we need to make a quick exit."
he looked in your direction quickly with a wide smile. "exactly, good girl y/n let's do this."
he turned his head again, using the key to unlock the front door and you stood there frozen. your neck flushed and all you could think about was him repeatedly
saying in your head, good girl.
geez, it's been a weird night and you may need therapy after this whole thing was over.
as soon as he stepped in you followed the plan and used the lock that was connected with the knob, standing over the crack of the front door as another barrier. adam made quick work to clear the few rooms and yelled, "clear!"
you fastened the other two locks across the door. a dead bolt and chain. making you feel safe already. he walked back in the room and as soon as you saw him, you made your way to the couch to sit down.
"i don't mean to keep asking a bunch of questions but how long do these things typically take? my nerves are fried right now and i just want to be able to sleep comfortably." you admitted.
he let out a deep sigh and shrugged, "well with setting it up and everything i'd say two and a half hours. if they make it difficult than three." he leaned over to grab the remote and then settled back in the couch cushion. he held the remote out to you and you put on a scary movie.
"interesting choice." he commented, looking at you from the corner of his eye.
you set the remote back down onto the table and shrugged. "better to focus on jump scares then what's actually going on right now."
"that's fair." he agreed, but knew he couldn't pay attention much since he was focused on your safety.
an hour in, you had moved on the couch, closing in on adam. any second now you would touch his arm. you didn't notice this since your eyes were glued to the screen but adam looked down and noticed the lack of room that you were supposed to be away from him.
he gulped, looking around the room before trying to scoot over but it was too late and you leaned back into his shoulder. "oh gosh i'm sorry!" you squeaked and you turned to look at him, noticing the amount of non-existent distance you were from his face.
"uh." he chuckled, looking into your eyes. they were such a pretty shade to him. you were both sitting there, still and breathing heavily. he noticed your eyes flicker to his lips and before he could think twice, he leaned in.
you put your hand on his cheek, dragging him closer and soon enough he laid on top of you. his body held you securely in place and you felt his hardness resting against your leg.
he hadn't realized how pretty you were until he felt how hard he was against you. he broke the kiss, not realizing what he had done until it was too late. "shit y/n, i'm so sorry!"
adam tried to get off of you but you put your hands around his shoulders and he sucked in a breath, realizing what was happening. "are you sure, y/n? i don't want to seem like an ass."
you nodded and joked. "on my life."
he rolled his eyes playfully, catching your joke and leaned back down to catch your lips again. his head reached up to palm your tit and your gasped, letting him have access inside of your mouth which he caressed with his tongue.
"you have cherries earlier?" he questioned against your lips and you let out a light hearted laugh. "mhm."
before you could realize what he was doing next, he took off his shirt and you licked your lips watching his abs flex. he caught you staring and smirked, helping you take off your shirt before you could say anything.
he reached up and unbuttoned his pants after taking off his belt and pushed up your short skirt. placing a kiss on the top of your pussy and then on your lips, he pushed himself inside of you and groaned.
"such a good girl for me y/n." he praised.
so he had noticed your initial response earlier and was using it to tease you. that little shit.
"harder." you replied, nipping his lip and he smirked at you, pounding harder. your eyes rolled back and he spread your legs open farther to hit a bunch of your spots.
his thrusts were relentless and punishing. working you up to come quickly and you cursed at how soon it would be over. he pressed the back of his finger to your clit and you gasped, feeling a rush of dizziness before coming.
"is it okay if i-?"
"-yeah." you grinned at his question and he finished shortly after, you felt his warm cum
inside of you.
he helped you put your clothes back on slowly before putting on his own and you sat up, looking at him. "what now?"
adam turned the volume back on the television that he muted earlier and sat back. "now we wait till voight gives me the all clear and then tomorrow evening, u and i, baby, are going to have dinner here."

HAILEY UPTON X JAY HALSTEAD
UPSTEAD AU ONESHOT
masterlist | series masterlist
prompt: you’re drunk and walked into the wrong apartment and fell asleep on my couch. oh god, you’re going to be so confused in the morning
Tumblr media
Hailey wasn’t one to drink more than a beer or two when she was out at a bar, but tonight she was alone, kind of sad, and ready to forget the events of the last few days. She had just broken it off with her boyfriend who of course refused to leave the apartment that they had been splitting the rent on for the last two years, leaving her somewhat stranded. Working out where she was going to sleep tonight sounded like a problem for future Hailey as she made her way into the bar and planted herself on a barstool, calling for a glass of whiskey as she took a swig from it and the liquid burned on the way down. One whiskey turned into six and eventually, Hailey was wandering the streets trying to work out exactly where her best friend Vanessa’s apartment was. Was it smart? No. But what other choice did she have?
Eventually, she made her way to what she was sure was Vanessa’s apartment, pulling a bobby pin from her hair to pick the woman’s lock. Somehow, even in her inebriated state, she still managed to successfully work out how to get inside, having enough sense to re-lock the door before collapsing on the couch. She was tired and she knew Vanessa wouldn’t mind once she learned about what her asshole ex had done; he wouldn’t even let her go back to get her things. Hailey was just trying to forget about him and go to sleep for the night as she collapsed onto the couch.
Jay had been asleep in his bed when he heard the squeaking of his front door and light footsteps on the floorboards of his second level apartment. At first he thought that it was his imagination, though his paranoia still got the best of him as he searched for an object he would be able to use to defend himself with. Slowly but surely, he tiptoed his way to his bedroom door and allowed it to swing open just wide enough for him to see the rest of his apartment in full view, his brows falling into a puzzled v shape.
On his couch was a blonde haired woman, her beauty still preserved in her semi-comatose state as she slept softly.
Jay couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. So, he wasn’t imagining things, but it was suddenly very, very clear to him that he was under no threat — despite the fact that she had totally committed a felony by breaking into his apartment. Sighing lightly in relief, he scurried back to shove the baseball bad he had been holding in his hands back underneath his bed and pulled one of the blankets from his bed, draping it over his arm as he headed out to his living room where the woman was sleeping. Her eyes — though they were closed — looked slightly puffy as though she had been crying, leaving Jay to frown sadly; he had always been deeply empathetic — the sight of anybody else being sad tugged at his heartstrings every time.
Ensuring he was as quiet and gentle as he possibly could be, he threw the blanket hanging from his arm over the woman and lifted her head up ever so slightly to slide a pillow beneath it, the smell of alcohol helping him put the pieces together as he frowned yet again — he was sure she was going to be so confused and probably even a bit frightened when she eventually woke up in the morning. Racking his brain for an idea as to how he could soften the blow for the woman when she awoke from her peaceful slumber, he went over to where his makeshift office was and pulled a piece of paper and a pen from his drawer, jotting down a quick note and leaving it on the coffee table before retiring back to his bed for the night.
🍷🍷🍷🍷
As Hailey blinked her eyes open the next morning, three things happened one after another another like a chain reaction.
First was the realisation of everything that happened in the last twenty four hours. The breakup with her boyfriend, the whole 'drinking her body weight in whiskey’ situation, and the whole 'having to crash at Vanessa’s apartment’ thing. She groaned as (most) of her memories flooded back to her.
Next was the realisation that she actually wasn’t in Vanessa’s apartment at all. The walls weren’t the same shade of white as Vanessa’s were, the couch was a black leather rather than the bright red one that her best friend had, and she was sure that Vanessa hadn’t suddenly changed the entire layout of her apartment. Sitting up, she took in her surroundings with a sense of panic washing over her as she spotted the piece of paper sitting on the coffee table, addressed in a way that inadvertently bought a smile to her lips.
To the really pretty girl asleep on my couch,
I know you’re probably really freaked out right now, but let me explain.
My name is Jay, and when you read this I’m probably hiding in my bedroom so that I don’t scare you. But anyway, you picked my lock last night and crashed on my couch. I don’t know who you are but you looked kind of sad and I could tell you probably had a few drinks, so I just put a blanket over you to keep you warm and figured it was lucky you picked the lock of the guy who finds this kind of hilarious rather than the guy next door who either would have shot first and asked questions later or the guy downstairs who calls the cops every time someone knocks at his door.
If you want to come and say hi or whatever, just come knock on my door. I’ll be awake. Unless you’re up before 8am, which I figure is pretty unlikely.
Anyway.
If you want to come say hi, come to my bedroom door. If you want to escape and pretend this never happened, that’s cool too. Completely up to you.
I hope this isn’t creepy or anything. I just thought that you were probably safer here in my apartment than wandering the street during the night which is why I let you be.
Sincerely, Guy-who-is-trying-to-do-the-right-thing-here (also known as Jay).
Finally, the third thing happened. The regret and embarrassment came washing over Hailey like a wave as she fell back onto the pillow behind her head, gluing her eyes closed as she let out a huff. This could not be happening. It had to be a dream, right? How could so many unpleasant things happen in such a short amount of time?
Hailey was just about ready to get up and scurry out of the apartment with her tail between her legs when she glanced back down to the note that the owner of the apartment — Jay — had left her. He seemed like a nice guy, and it wouldn’t be fair to him if she didn’t at least offer up a thank you. The silence in the apartment echoed through her head, the tension on her side of the door evident as she carefully peeled the blanket off of her legs and folded it up neatly, placing it down on the end of the couch. Every move she made was methodically planned out and meticulously executed — for what, she didn’t know.
She had always been the brave one. The first one to step up to a challenge no matter how big or small, the first one to speak up and be completely unapologetic about it, too. It wasn’t at all like Hailey to be standing there the way she was, pacing back and forth slightly as her fingers drummed against her thigh, yet here she was. In a stranger’s apartment. After literally committing a crime while blind drunk and now having one of the worst hangovers she’s ever experienced (which, by the way, she was sure was only being worsened by the the previous facts).
Forcing herself to muster up the courage, Hailey marched herself over to the bedroom door and knocked twice, immediately feeling her heart drop as every inch of her body wanted to bolt. Still, she kept her feet planted on the spot as she and the man behind the door suddenly came face to face. Hailey felt the wind being knocked out of her, their eyes meeting at the same time that she attempted to force out a million words.
“I am so, so sorry,” she said quickly, not giving the man a chance to respond as he instead stared at her with a lopsided smirk. Hailey was so in her own head that she hadn’t even gotten the chance to appreciate how remarkably attractive the man was, instead jumping to her own explanation. “I was drunk and I thought this was my best friends apartment. I didn’t have anywhere else to go because my asshole ex-boyfriend has decided to claim the apartment that I pay rent on and I just collapsed on the couch and I am —“
“Okay, breathe,” Jay smirked lightly, finding amusement in the woman’s rambling. “You don’t need to apologise — it’s cool. How about we start with a name, huh? I’m Jay, but. . . you already know that.”
“Hailey,” the woman answered. “My name is Hailey. Although you can refer to me as idiot, felon, dumbass, or all of the above if you so wish.”
Jay chuckled lightly — she was funny. He hadn’t expected that, though he wasn’t sure why. “Thanks for the offer, but I’ll stick with Hailey.”
Hailey gave a halfhearted smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Anyway — I just wanted to say thank you. I’ll get out of your apartment now, and I swear you’ll never see me again or —“
“Wait, you don’t have to rush out if you don’t want to,” Jay’s words came off cooler than what they felt like for him. Internally he was screaming for her to stay, partly because she was even more beautiful now that she was awake and he just wanted to stare at her forever even though he knew absolutely nothing about her. She was intriguing — that lured the man in as if he was a sailor being called to an echoing siren, soft and smooth yet piercing too, all at the same time. “Do you want something to eat? What about some Advil, or I could drive you to your friend’s place — better yet I’ll go and kick your asshole ex out of the apartment.”
The blonde-haired woman chuckled lightly. “No, no, it’s okay. Would I. . . uh. . . would I be able to wash my face in your bathroom really quick, please? I won’t be long, I just — I normally take a shower in the mornings and —"
“Oh, you can totally take a shower!” Jay said incredulously, opening up his door wide enough for the girl to come into his bedroom as he pointed towards the ensuite bathroom a few steps away.
“I don’t have any clothes.”
“I can pull something out of the closet!”
Hailey smiled gratefully up at the man as she thanked him, heading to the bathroom as Jay laid out an oversized hoodie and a pair of track pants on the bed. Heading out to the kitchen, Jay figured starting on something resembling breakfast was a good idea, even if the very pretty girl in his apartment wasn’t going to have anything. The sound of the shower running in the background mixed in with the sizzling of eggs on the frypan that Jay had probably only used enough times for him to count on one hand as he stirred them around, grabbing out two plates before splitting what he had made in half.
With her perfect timing, just as Jay placed down the plate on a small table by one of the only windows in his apartment, Hailey reemerged from the bedroom. The hoodie he had left for her hung down to her knees and the sweatpants she had on were at least two sizes too big, but even with her dripping wet locks and bare face, she was just as beautiful as ever.
“I — uh — I made eggs.” Jay stumbled across his words as he gestured towards the plate. “I hope I’m not overstepping or anything. I just thought that since I was making some already for myself. . .”
“You’re not overstepping,” Hailey smiled gently, his hesitation bringing a chuckle to escape her lips. “I was just naked in your apartment — I feel like this is probably acceptable, regardless of how I got here. I learned how to pick locks when I was like, fourteen and let’s just say I’ve used it way more times than I care to admit.”
Jay let out a laugh as Hailey sat down, the two deciding to become acquainted with one another. She learned that he was a doctor for Veteran’s Affairs while she was a social worker working out of children’s services — she hadn’t exactly pegged him for the doctor type, what with his unbelievably good looks (that she was now able to appreciate) and all. Hailey listened intently as he told stories of his time overseas from when he himself had served, and although she could see the slight pain on his features as he recalled some of those memories, there was something about Hailey that allowed him to speak his mind to her without any inhibitions. He had never experienced anything like it.
Before they knew it, hours had passed. Hours of them spilling their guts about the most insignificant things that made up who each of them who they were. Hours spilling their guts about the tiniest details that neither of them would ever forget.
“Thank you again, Jay.” Hailey stood at the door, her clothes from the night before sitting in a plastic bag that Jay had offered the woman as they said their goodbyes. “You’re a really good guy. I’m glad I broke into your apartment.”
Jay couldn’t help but laugh, wiping his sweaty palms on his pants as his eyes cast downwards, nervous in anticipation. “I was thinking. . . “
“Mmm?”
“Uhm — Listen, Hailey . . .  I really had a good time talking to you over breakfast. Would you maybe — uh — you don’t have to say yes but — maybe you’d want to do it again? I know this pizza shop — Bartoli’s — they have the best deep dish in town.”
Hailey’s lips curled upwards — she thought he’d never ask.
“You know what, Jay? I think I’d like that. I think I’d like that a lot."

“Hailey.”
You whispered harshly, just loud enough for the blonde to hear as you grabbed her hand that was currently inching up your thigh.
You were thankful that your friends sat in front of you were currently caught up in their own conversation. About what, you didn’t know as your entire focus was on Hailey who was constantly trying to tease you - and succeeding - not caring that you were surrounded by your close friends at Molly’s.
Hailey threw a playful glance at you when you tightened your grip on her hand that was still resting on your thigh.
She leaned closer to you and whispered in your ear, “You know you want me, babe. Why are you fighting it?”
“Because we’re in a public place. Surrounded by people we work with everyday.”
You were cut off when Hailey pushed her hand so it was directly against your clothed pussy.
She was always stronger than you. And you loved that about her.
You bit your lip to fight the moan that would have surely slipped past your lip and instead, took a large swig of the beer you had been drinking.
“Y/N, are you okay?” Vanessa asked, raising her brow at you in question, breaking away from her conversation with Kevin as they both stared at you.
“Y-yeah. Just gonna head to the bathroom.”
The duo nodded as you left the booth, Hailey following behind you.
Just as you approached the bathroom, Hailey took a hold of your arm and pulled you into an empty storage room, pushing you up against the wall as she closed the door behind her.
“Hail-”
Once again, you were cut off when Hailey crashed her lips against yours in a passionate, heated kiss.
With one hand, she pressed your hips tight against the wall and she used the other to wrap around your neck. You moaned at the feeling of her hand around you, gently squeezing.
She pulled back and smirked down at you, her messy blonde locks falling around her face, “You look so good with my hand wrapped around your throat.”
You looked up at her, your eyes pleading for more and with a sinful smile, Hailey tugged your jeans down and slipped a hand into your panties.
As you opened your mouth to beg, she pushed two fingers inside you and began to thrust them into you. Another moan rose to your throat and fell past your lips before Hailey playfully squeezed your neck again.
“You better be quiet or everyone’s going to know what a naughty little slut you are.”
You nodded frantically as you rocked your hips, trying to get her to move again.
She chuckled darkly, her blue eyes blackened with lust as she resumed her movements. Her thrusts were fast, the palm of her hand hitting your clit with each thrust. With her hand still wrapped around your neck, she started to kiss over your exposed skin, occasionally nipping at your bottom lip.
When she curled her fingers in you, your pussy clenched around them, a telltale sign that you were close.
Something which Hailey was aware of.
Just as you were about to reach your high, Hailey abruptly stopped her movements and removed her fingers from you.
She brought them to her lips and licked your arousal off of them.
“Why did you stop? I was so close.” You whined, frustrated tears springing to your eyes.
Squeezing your neck, she kissed you hardly, leaving you breathless as you tasted yourself on her lips.
Hailey answered with a smirk, repeating the words you’d spoken earlier, “Because we’re in a public place. Surrounded by people we work with everyday.”
