Example of Moth Camouflage
Their patterns are not only mimicking bark, but the lichen that grows on the bark also.

Hello! It’s a tussock moth caterpillar. I’m not super familiar with all the species in your area, so best educated guess is a pale tussock moth, Calliteara pudibunda.

Spot the moth 2: Pale Tussock (Calliteara pudibunda)
This moth visited me a couple of years ago. Look at its fluffy legs! Top camo *and* delightfulness. A+ moth, would recommend.
This moth eats trees and shrubs including blackthorn, hawthorn, birch, and crabapple. It also eats hops and used to be considered a pest when they were more widely grown.
Moths like this thrive when there's a range of species in hedgerows, parks and gardens. If you have a garden and want to see more moths, having a hedge that isn't a monoculture definitely helps. Thank you from the Moth Promotional Board 🦋✨📋

Front side -- Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), a famous German entomologist, naturalist and biological illustrator. By the time of her death, she had raised at least 300 species of insects and produced four books on her scientific work. Her images were the first to portray insect metamorphic cycles and behaviors centered around the plant species that nourished the caterpillars. In the background, buildings from historical Nuremberg.
Reverse side -- a dandelion (Taraxacum), with the caterpillar and butterfly of the pale tussock moth (Calliteara pudibunda). The Dutch common name for the moth Meriansborstel is named for Merian.

Plate 8 from Merian’s first "The Wondrous Transformation of Caterpillars and their Strange Diet of Flowers" book showing a dandelion and the lifecycle of the pale tussock moth.

Look look look! saw this moth while I was on my way to the gym!!!
at first I thought this was possibly a Puss Moth (Cerura vinula) but the pattern didn’t quite match, so on second thought I think this may be a Female Pale Tussock Moth!! (Calliteara Pudibunda)
She’s actually in season for a Pale Tussock, they usually emerge May/June
Isn’t she absolutely beautiful!!!
