I remember my first camcorder. I bought it in the mid-1990s to record family trips and outings. It was small and used mini-cassettes. Sadly, it was a POS. The video quality was decent for the era, but the microphone primarily recorded the whirring of the camera’s innards, making the viewing of home videos as much a pain for the owners as for the guests. I’ve never bothered transferring/converting any of that material to new media.

My vidcam was very similar to what my Stunt Double du Jour is holding. It’s too late to warn him to toss it. I don’t even remember the brand.

at the end of 2020 i spent the week of my birthday alone, living in the coach class of an amtrak train documenting the world passing me by on 35mm film. i made (my first ever) photo book out of it that is no longer in print unless by special request cause its a bitch to do single copies and no one really cares about my non-music photos anyway. from the midwest to the pnw, down the west coast and up through the south. 20 something rolls and a lot of cigarettes. a deeply lonely experience and my favorite thing ive ever done.

man am I grateful to live in the digital age at times tho. the hell were all these poor people doing without archives immediately at their disposal for research and recreation. I know libraries, fanzines, clubs and the like have always provided an outlet but I'm too used to sitting here like a little emperor ringing my bell and having my aides (internet service provider and web browser) present me with treats from the scholars (hobbyist archivers)

#I do love delayed gratification to an Extent like I don't enjoy bingewatching and stuff #but how did I live in a world without easy recording capabilities #I still remember that day my cousin and I were following x.iaolin showdown on cn in the afternoons while I was staying w/ his family #we went out for the day and completely forgot about that day's episode. devastating. when you are 11 #the idea of 2 of your favourite bands performing at the same place but you can't go cause it's in los angeles #and the most you can do is read about it being advertised and never hear of it again because it's pre-camcorders/tape circulation/internet #if your favourite things were even lucky enough to have a dedicated fanbase at all. the heartbreak
