#catalan independence
Note
do you know if there are any players who are vocal about catalan independence?
Tumblr media
in a manner of speaking, sort of. in 2019 a lot of fc barcelona players and staff spoke out against the extreme prison sentences for leaders of the catalan independence movement following the 2017 referendum on catalan independence. actually, alexia herself got in trouble with right-wing spaniards and the usual internet trolls after posting a tweet back in 2019 touching on the issue. her tweet was fairly innocuous by twitter standards, but she said that the sentences were "not the solution" and asked for proper solutions now. after the backlash, she went on to post:
Tumblr media
this was basically her version of the "shut up and dribble" criticism where she says that being a footballer doesn't make her a citizen? e.g., can she not voice her opinion on political matters?
and let's not forget our favorite proud catalan, aitana bonmati, who took to arguing with twitter trolls about dictator franco's legacy during this same time in 2019.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
where aitana rightfully calls out that not only does she have family members who lived and suffered during that time but they also studied it academically too! let's just say i don't think aitana would be going on a double date with athenea and her bf anytime soon...
so yeah, the players are not super, openly political all the time, but they have their moments every now and then.

New unclassified documents show Spain's espionage against Catalan independentists and how Spain's government, police and media worked together to publish fake information to attack Catalan independentists for years
For the last two months, there situation with the political espionage against Catalans, false accusations of all kinds of things against pro-independence politicians and activists, as well as right-wing demonstrations with Spanish supremacist hate speech, Spanish right-wing (though not only) politicians saying once again that Catalans are terrorist to gain votes, etc. have been escalating once again.
I had not made any post about all of that because I am simply too tired of the same thing happening over and over again and the same discussions happening all the time. This blog would be boringly repetitive if I commented on all the cases of diffamations, fear-mongering about inexistent supposed Catalan terrorists, the negotiations for a fake amnesty written so that they can keep as many people in jail as possible, and every new attack against Catalan people's right to use the Catalan language in the Catalan-speaking territories. It's the same old same old that doesn't stop happening in Spain. But I will give an update about what has been proven lately (and which had been known for a long time, but now can't be denied).
It has been known for a long time that the Spanish military intelligence service (CNI), with permission from the Spanish Supreme Court, has been using the Israeli espionage programme Pegasus to illegally spy on dozens of Catalan pro-independence journalists, activists, lawyers, politicians, and their relatives and friends for years. This goes against the human rights of the people who had their personal communications spied on and also against all the independence movement, because nobody is safe and everyone is susceptible of being spied on only for their political ideas.
Now, some of the official documents of the CNI have been declassified, so we know for sure that this espionage was happening, but other documents have not yet been declassified. Catalan politicians are asking the CNI to release the rest of these documents. The answer has been that they will not declassify them because it would "generate a risk and a grave threat for the life and integrity of the sources and collaborators of the CNI". Taking into account how in the last few years there has been many cases of infiltrated Spanish police in the Catalan social movements, including police who were infiltrated and entering long-term romantic relationships with Catalan activists (mostly Catalan women but some men too) and having sexual relations with others while lying to them about their identity, this statement can be understood to accept that there are many more people infiltrated in the movement.
But what have we seen in the documents that were released? That, as expected, the Spanish Government and Police between 2012 and 2016 used fake proof as excuses to spy on Catalans and tarnish their reputation on the press. As it has been released, the Spanish police compiled fake events with made-up proofs about Catalan independentist politicians, then they sent these fake news to the Minister of Interior of the Spanish Government, Jorge Fernández Díaz, who sent them to the Spanish media to be published as manufactured scandals on the front pages. This way, the Spanish media has spent years publishing fake information with the purpose of attacking the reputation and spreading fake ideas about Catalan independentists, including accusing many innocents of corruption, tax evasion, and personal family problems. All of these false accusations were widely talked about in Spanish media and became huge scandals, but when they were proven to be fake, the same media that published it would not include the news that these people had been declared innocents. Other ministers of the Spanish government like María Dolores de Cospedal and the president of Spain Mariano Rajoy were aware of it, and other ministries contributed to sending cherry-picked or false information to the Ministry of Interior for this scheme. All of this, of course, was paid for with public money coming from our taxes.
Nobody is surprised. This is just another day in Spain. The current Spanish Government has continued the espionage with Pegasus.

Spain’s Sánchez wins new term thanks to Catalonia amnesty deal
Pedro Sánchez took over as Spain’s second-term prime minister, winning a tense vote dominated by his decision to win the support of Catalan separatists by offering a controversial amnesty to those involved in the region’s failed independence attempt six years ago.
Sánchez won an absolute majority in the election with the support of 179 of Spain’s 350 MPs. However, his victory came at a high price and depended on the support of smaller regional parties, including Catalan and Basque nationalists.
The PP has been unable to form a government with the support of the far-right Vox party and other smaller groups, despite winning first place in July’s elections.
However, Sanchez and his partners in the leftist Sumar alliance managed to gather the necessary support for their coalition by agreeing to amnesty demands from the two main pro-independence Catalan parties – the pragmatic Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and the hardline Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia).
Sanchez argues that amnesty will allow the country to take a step forward.

Spain lied about not selling weapons to Israel.
Even after October 7th, Spain has sold more than 1 million € of weapons to Israel. Norway and Finland make it possible.
In January, Spain made headlines word-wide when the government's Minister of Exteriors, José Manuel Albares (PSOE), claimed in Congress and later again in a radio interview that Spain had stopped selling weapons to Israel ever since October 7th. Israel's intensification of violence in Gaza following October 7th meant that, on top of decades of apartheid and ethnic cleansing, between October 7th and January 23rd Israel had already killed 28,000 people and forced 2 million out of their home. In this context, many people were demanding their governments stop arming and funding the genocide of the Palestinian people, and here on Tumblr and other social media sites like Twitter I think we all saw the many posts praising the Spanish government for this.
Well, it turns out it was a lie.
According to Albares, "Since October 7th there are no more weapons exportations [from Spain] to Israel". But in November alone, Spain exported weapons to Israel for 987,000€, as was published on the Spanish Government's official website dedicated to exterior commerce (Comex). A researcher from Centre Delàs (an independent centre for peace studies) found it and published it, and it has also been verified by newspapers such as elDiario.es.
This 987,000€ worth of weapons in November was not the only ammunition that Spain has sent to Israel in 2023. In 2023, Spain exported a total of 1.48 million € in war material to Israel.
All of the weapons sent in November come from the factory of Nammo Palencia (Castilla y León), a corporation that is 50% property of the Government of Norway and 50% owned by a public Finnish business. However, even if the owners are foreigners, the ammunition was sent from Spain and thus it had to be authorized by the an organism of the Spanish Government named Junta Interministerial de Defensa y Doble Uso, whose deliberations on whether a weapons exportation is accepted or denied are kept secret. The only cases where they have denied exporting weapons to Israel have been when they thought that Israel would re-sell these weapons to the Philippines.
Spain has had a close relation with Israel for years. As published by the Spanish Government, Spain has sold 20 million € of weapons to Israel between 2012 and 2022. Spain also buys weapons and military software from Israel (for example, the Spanish Intelligence Service has been using the Israeli software Pegasus to illegally spy on Catalan activists, journalists, politicians and civil society members and their relatives to attack the Catalan independence movement), and Spain has continued buying from Israel and allocating defense contracts to Israel even after the October 7th attacks. It is very difficult to track the concessions of public contracts such as buying weapons, but some contracts have been known. For example, on November 24th 2023, Spain bought 287.5 million € of missiles from Israel. This is not unusual: between 2011 and 2021, it is publicly known that Spain bought war material from Israel for at least 268 million €, but experts say that the real number could be two or three times as much.
Spain has also continued allocating concessions to Israel. For example, on December 15th 2023 Spain allocated a contract worth over 576 million € to Israel for a rocket launcher programme. On November 22nd, Spain allocated another another Israeli company to provide missiles for 237 million € at the same time as the Spanish army bought Israeli inhibitors for 1.4 million €. The very next day, November 23rd, Spain signed another military allocation to Israel for 82,600€. The following week, Spain signed yet another allocation with a different Israeli military corporation for 3.7 million €.
Spain also allows Israeli weapon manufacturing companies to produce weapons through their branches located in Spain. This way, Israeli weapons make their way to markets with which Israel doesn't have diplomatic ties but Spain does, like Saudi Arabia. And since Spain is a member of NATO, Israeli weapons produced in Spain are approved according to NATO standards and access it easily. In the same way, these Israeli weapons manufacturers also access European Union defense funds through their branches in Spain. (source).
As I said, I saw a lot of positive posts around when Albares said Spain was going to embargo, but I haven't seen any post about how they didn't do it. I also (personally) haven't seen anything on international media, and barely anything on Spanish media, which is already busy with the PSOE covid material corruption scandal. So I share this in the hope of helping put pressure on Spain to cut all ties with Israel immediately.
SHAME ON EVERYONE WHO GIVES ISRAEL THE MATERIAL AND MONEY THAT WILL BE USED TO MASSACRE THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE. SHAME ON SPAIN, NORWAY, AND FINLAND.

Quote
Bullfights are reviewed in the arts rather than the sports sections of Spanish newspapers and fall under the purview of the Ministry of Culture. Declared illegal by the Spanish constitutional court in 2016, the Catalan ban was as much about political grandstanding as protecting animal rights. In the wake of the 2017 illegal independence referendum, the xenophobic and anti-immigration Vox party exploited anti-Catalan and pro-bullfighting sentiment in its campaigning and has become the third-biggest force in Spanish politics. Star matador Morante de la Puebla often joins party leader Santiago Abascal on the campaign trail. But Vox has more to gain from the relationship than bullfighters, especially in rural areas where Abascal’s party has successfully attracted single-issue pro-bullfighting and hunting voters. The far-right has provided some protection for the profession, but it has also turned it into a more highly prized target. An increasing number of progressive citizens have a visceral dislike of bullfighting because it is seen as the last bastion for reactionaries with no place in a 21st-century European democracy.

The Wonder Twins Universe
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
You had your debut two weeks after arriving to the team, you played in a friendly against Atletico during the preseason. You entered the pitch as a sub for the second half and your impact was immediate. Jonatan saw the way you orchestrated the midfield, your communication with both the defenders and the strikers and how everything went smoothly. The game ended 5-0 with you being player of the match as you contributed with 2 assists, and you had participated in the building of a third goal.
Not only your impact in the team was noticeable but also the impact of joining Barcelona was noticeable. You started learning Spanish to speak with the staff, your teammates and with the fans, you also started to gain more muscle as training in Barcelona was more rigorous than with Arsenal. You felt as if you had been playing in Barcelona for years.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Before you knew it you already had been in Barcelona for a month and a half. You loved everything in Barcelona, the city, the warm weather, the staff, and your teammates.
You thought that joining such a united team it would have been difficult to be accepted and to join into the team’s dynamics however, it has been the opposite.
You could say that Mapi has become your closest friend in Barcelona, she made sure to make your adaptation easier and Ingrid became your confidant and the person with whom you went for advice as she understood perfectly what you were going through, being a foreigner joining Barcelona. Patri and Claudia became your annoying little sisters while with Jana and Bruna you felt the necessity of protecting them and teaching them everything you could, you were sure that those two would become superstars.
Having other British teammates joining at the same time as you have made everything better, you had a piece of home in Barcelona thanks to them.
Finally, Alexia. The chemistry you had her was undeniably, you made her laugh with your clumsiness and with the stories you told her about your adventures with Leah when you were younger and she made your heartbeat faster, you love the passion she has about the game for either the club or her national team. You couldn’t stop thinking about the Catalan and you couldn’t wait for her to be on the pitch again.
The only negative part of joining Barcelona was being separated from your family, specially from your twin. You talked with Leah every time it was possible, you missed being with her almost 24/7. Being separated from her while it gave you a sense of independence it was also the worst feeling ever.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Being in Liga F has taught about a new playing style, your skills have only gotten better and it was noticed by Sarina so it wasn’t a surprise when you were announced as part of the squad for the international break and that’s how you found yourself in the locker room after the last practice before the break saying goodbye to some of your teammates.
“Mapi! Don’t do anything to crazy while I’m gone!”
“Me?!? y/nn I don’t why would you say that” Mapi said with a fake innocent voice.
“You are right Mapi. How could I say that? You are an angel” you said smiling with a sarcastic voice.
You picked up your things before approaching Mapi, hugging her and whispering. “Mapi, if there’s something bothering you, and I mean anything at all you about the coach from your national team remember that I’m one call away.”
“Thank you y/nn, I can’t stand anymore Vilda and his staff. I don’t know what to do, I want to stay strong for the younger ones” she whispered back to you.
“Remember Mapi, one call away” you whispered back before separating.
“Good luck with Norway Ingrid!” you said while giving her a quick hug.
“You to y/nn! I hope everything goes well with the Lionesses”
After saying goodbye to more teammates, you went looking for Alexia who should be finishing her physiotherapy session. You were waiting outside the physiotherapy room when she came out.
“Ale! I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to you” you said looking directly to her eyes and giving her a soft smile.
She approached you and hugged you.
“If you couldn’t say goodbye I would have understood. Our schedules are hectic.”
“Ale, I had to say goodbye. I wouldn’t have been comfortable without it.”
You guys kept hugging until you heard Lucy “Williamson! We need to go! Are you ready?!”
You separated from Alexia and turned around towards Lucy yelled “Yeah Lucy! Just give me two more minutes!”
Lucy realized that you and Alexia were having a moment, before leaving she said “Two minutes Williamson!”
You turned around back to Alexia and said “Ale I know that I will only be gone for like 10 days, but I’ll miss you”
“I’ll miss you to y/n, good luck for your games y/nn, I’ll make sure to watch every single match. You better return to me, I mean Barcelona in one piece, I would hate for you to join me and the physios.”
“Don’t worry Ale, I’ll take care of my myself” you told her smiling.
Before leaving and turning around you gave her a kiss in the cheek close to her mouth.
If you had turned around to see her reaction, you would’ve seen her really red face and how her fingers here softly caressing the exact spot of the kiss.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
St George's Park, you really had missed that place.
You, Lucy and Keira were just arriving to the place. You couldn’t wait to see your teammates again but the person you wanted to see the most was Leah.
As soon as you guys left the van you were greeted by the media team. After you waved and greeted the camera you entered the lobby.
Before you could even greet some teammates and Sarina a body had tackled you. You immediately recognized her blonde hair and hugged her.
“Look! The Wonder Twins are finally reunited” Tooney said.
After her words everyone turned their attention towards you and your twin.
Everyone could see that was an emotional exchange, they couldn’t imagine how you guys felt.
Finally, Leah and you separated and you greeted everyone.
After greeting everyone Leah hugged you again “I’ve missed you so much sis”
“I missed you too Lee, there’s so much that I need to tell you. There might be someone special in Barcelona” you whispered.
You guys separated and she smiled at you before she could talk Rachel’s voice interrupted her.
“Oi! y/nn what are they feeding you with in Barcelona. You have more muscles than you did before and only in a period of two months!”
After hearing that you couldn’t help but to laugh.
You couldn’t wait to play to play again with your sister.  After all you guys are The Wonder Twins.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Thank you to everyone! The love recieved by part three was amazing.
If there is anything that you guys would like to see please comment it!

super random but is laia codina like super catalan or smth😭😭? i keep seeing so much abt it (aitana as well?)
haha absolutely. if you think alexia is a proud catalana, then laia and aitana are next level, super catalan.
starting with laia, she is the stereotypical, country bumpkin catalan. 😂 she's from a small village near girona and grew up on a farm (her dad and uncle are farmers). in fact, her ex-barça teammates often joke around with her about all her family's cows. plus, if you compare the way laia speaks catalan to the way alexia speaks catalan, it's like alexia has the urban/city barcelona accent and demeanor, and laia has the whole folksy, rural vibe going on. let's just say if you are trying to learn catalan, don't start by listening to laia! 🙈 (also, here's jenni hermoso saying she wants to hug one of her cows 😂)
Tumblr media
but no one, and i mean no one, is as proudly catalan as aitana bonmati. first of all, her parents are professors of catalan language and literature. but more interestingly, they are catalan independence and marxist leaning activists. her father was even arrested and accused of being a member of a catalan paramilitary group. (he was later acquitted). her family's history is super interesting and it's common knowledge by now that this activism extends into gender equality and she took her mother's surname (bonmatí) first, followed by her father's, which is quite rare in spain. and we know speaking spanish annoys her. 😂
and finally, aitana is been a very vocal member of the recent movement to add catalan as one of the official languages of the EU.
“I wanted to give value to Catalan. It is my language, with which I express myself every day and with which I do it best. I ask that it be recognized at the European level. It's my language and I have every right in the world to do it." - Aitana Bonmatí
