Costume Meta 6x08
Sorry everyone that this is super late - I had to set up Christmas at my place of work and it literally ate up all of my time so I’ve only just ben able to get this finished and posted! Thankfully Christmas is now up and running so I have my life back!
In other news I also hit a follower milestone just before 6x08 aired - I’m not really someone who celebrates these things and I can’t offer anything to you all in thanks as I’m not really creative in that way, but Thank you to all of you following me I love you all and I cannot tell you how much joy I’ve got from being in this fandom with you all. It truly means a lot to me that so many of you have embraced my costume ramblings, and that you seem to enjoy them! lets get on with the meta shall we!
You know I said in my 6x07 meta how 6x08 was probably going to be a fairly heavy costume episode because 6x07 was fairly lightweight - well sometimes  i don’t like being right - especially when its insanely busy at work and I therefore have less time to write!
There were a lot of costumes for our mains this week, and some interesting developments - choices have been made my friends - choices have been made!
Chimney
Oh hello there Chimney wearing Red!!! its not a colour we see on Chim very often at all - he is far more of a - blacks, greys, dark greens and blues kind of guy, but this red basket weave shirt is a fun choice for him. We could apply the red flag theory her and say that the house hunting isn’t going to go well based on this shirt alone. I also love that he’s got a bit dressed up to go house hunting. I also love that this shirt is made up of both red and white - the passion (red and representing his love for Maddie) and purity (white - essentially Jee) - something we get to see further played out in the next shirt choice
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the next shirt being this white tee which I really loved to see in this scene - white is a colour of purity and its perfect for this moment - Chim is full of naïve hope that turning the dining room into a bedroom for Jee will work out for them as a solution until they can find a suitable 2 bed house
Tumblr media
Then we have Chim in a navy/black v necked long sleeve tee and a knit hoodie in the same colour. I think they’re both black (in the blue black spectrum rather than the brown black spectrum) but I can’t be 100% as the lighting in both scenes makes it tricky to be sure. Either way to go from white to black is emblematic of how the change isn’t working - its the whole going from light to dark - hope to despair!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the final Buckley-Han scene shows Chim in maroon - still a colour we see the men of 911 in fairly often when they are in a parental role (and generally speaking - happy in this role), its not a completely accurate theme for this colour, as we see it used at other points as well, but in this scene it fits the theme perfectly.
Tumblr media
Maddie
Maddie in the same blazer we saw in 6x04 when Maddie visits the little girl she was on the phone with when her abusive father almost killed her mother. Its an interesting choice for a repeat item of costume - the two scenes don’t seem to connect in any obvious way on the surface, except the little girl and her mother are free and moving on/forward with their lives - they no longer have to hide in a small apartment, they can now move on to something better - thats what is happening with Maddie, Chim and Jee - they are looking to move on and forward and into a new apartment. Of course the plaid shirt is very much telling us that this i not going to end well and I even think it might be foreshadowing what ever is going to go down with the house Chimney finds in 6x09!
Tumblr media
We’re sticking with Maddie’s outfit theme of tee, blazer and false front hoodie as well as her Jee-Jun heart necklace (which I’ve started calling that as she only started wearing it after Jee was born) very much enjoying Maddie wearing a tee with a keyhole and a slogan that says ‘love dreamers’ on it in an episode called whats your fantasy! I think its a very interesting choice for this scene - where Maddie and Chim have had to compromise on their dream (for the time being) and the new arrangement quickly goes wrong.
Tumblr media
Green plaid I see you!!! I can’t decide at this point if they’re trying to make it look like Maddie is wearing Chim’s shirts or not. its plaid which is fitting with the check theory, and we see Maddie (and Chim) struggling with Jee and their tiny apartment. While the theory fits in with what we see in this episode, its also part of the wider foreshadowing for their apartment search - this is the second plaid item we see Maddie in this episode - not something we tend to see her in often, so we should definitely keep an eye on things realting to the house hunt going forward (especially with the synopsis for 6x09!)  The other thing is the green getting brighter and darker as Maddie settles back into her life as a Mother and partner - hence the darker jewel green hoodie in the final scene - when the three of them are together as a family.
Tumblr media
Athena & Bobby
I’m combining them this week because Bobby didn’t have a lot going on costume wise this week - as has been the case for a few episodes now and to be honest its making me a bit queasy - because I’m becoming increasingly convinced they’re doing it deliberately to hide something from us - we’re getting nothing form his clothes - like at all. And I know they are very much in keeping with Bobbys style and colour ways, but I’m suspicious by nature and the change from 5b bobby costumes to 6a bobby costumes in their complete lack of anything interesting beyond his cruise Hawaiian shirt is telling.
(ok so I typed the above and then the 6x09 synopsis dropped and now I feel like my suspicions were founded - I think we might see some more interesting shirt choices on Bobby in 6x09)
Tumblr media
Athena’s outfits are very much typical Athena outfits - we get her in a dark plum cardigan with some sparkle. The most notable thing though is that necklace -  this is a new one for Athena - it looks to me to be a guardian angel -  continuing the foreshadowing of the mama bear necklace from the last episode.
Tumblr media
Then we have this very typical Athena in army green trousers and black top combo - with another new necklace
Tumblr media
I can’t get a good enough close up to figure out what it is at the moment - I’m sure one of you out there might have more luck than I - if you do drop me an ask 😎
Tumblr media
Athenas final outfit - is this fab yellow ochre cardigan (I really love this colour on Athena) and the pelican necklace has returned!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing with this shade of yellow ochre, is that we’ve only seen Athena and Buck wearing it with any regularity (Hen has worn the same shade a couple of times but nowhere near as much as Athena and Buck), and interestingly enough it tends to be connected with the idea of communicating a change in family dynamic for both of them (and Hen as well - the most obvious example being when she talks to her mom about having to give Nia back to her biological mother) I find it very intriguing that they are choosing to parallel the two (three if we include Hen) of them in this way, on top of all the other parallels we’ve seen between Athena and Buck in the past.
4x12 - Treasure hunt (she has a yellow ochre top on underneath the jacket as well). This one is a slightly brighter shade of yellow, and we see more of a shift in the firefam dynamic than the Grant-Nash family dynamic, but actually thats just as relevant - its a build in to the shooting (both Eddie and Bobby), and ties most closely with the two shirts Buck wears in 4x11 & 14.
Its also building into all of the happenings for the Grant-Nash family in season 5 - its very telling that this is the moment they chose to put Athena in yellow ochre for the first time because the storyline from this episode chimes back in with the conversation Athena and Hen have - about money and winning the lottery in this episode, which directly connects to 2x17 - the episode where Shanon dies - wearing the same yellow ochre!! All 3 episodes are similarly titled in that they are playing on the theme of fantasy - ‘Careful what you wish for’, ‘Treasure hunt’ and ‘Whats your fantasy’ and the interconnection of them the use of this colour is something I need to think on a bit more because what the costumes are doing here is interconnecting seemingly unconnected story arcs and I can’t be coherent about it right now!
Tumblr media
5x05 - when Athena smacks Harry - for running away and acting out
Tumblr media
5x07 - a conversation with Bobby about Harry and his acting out in the aftermath of being kidnaped by Jeffery Hudson
Tumblr media
5x08 - Defend in pace - when Michael announces he’s leaving to support David in Haiti.
Tumblr media
5x14 - conversation with Bobby about Harry having the same shoes as the boy hit by a car
Tumblr media
As you can see all of the subsequent times Athena is in yellow ochre we see the Grant-Nash dynamics shift in some way, so the colour is indicating to our (the viewer) subconcious that things are about to shift or change.
I ran out of images so you’ll have to go look these up yourself, but as I mentioned in my mini Buck bts meta we see Buck in the shade in 3x06 and then the same top in 4x04/5.
In season 4 we also see him wearing ochre in episodes 2, 3, 11 and then at the end of 14 - during the will reveal and Eddie’s welcome home party and Like I said above, this is a slightly brighter shade, than the other others.
4x02
Tumblr media
4x03
Tumblr media
4x11 (this is the one that most closely ties in with the Athena jacket from 4x12 in terms of shade, and interestingly they are both about the wider firefam - in this case Sue Blevins and her hit and run)
Tumblr media
4x14 This isn’t the best picture to see that the colour is brighter than the other yellow ochres we see Buck wear, but it is I promise!
Tumblr media
5x03
Tumblr media
5x04
Tumblr media
In season 5 episodes 3 and 4 - both in scenes connected to Maddie and her departure from LA because of her PPD. As you can see all of Bucks wearing Yellow ochre also connects in with changing family dynamics - from 3x06 where Buck is getting back with his firefam in the post lawsuit world (interesting that both Athena and Buck wear it for the first time in a firefam moment rather than a scene connected to their actual family), to Maddie’s pregnancy and the change in family dynamics that brings, all the way through to her needing to leave to get herself well again and the elephant in the room that is the Will and Buck becoming a part of another family - his own family.
May
Tumblr media
I want to talk about these two costumes in parallel, because they are two sides of the same coin. Here we have May dressed in a youthful way - a way of connecting the scene to her past - the fact she is bringing home the boy she dated in high school - a time when she was ‘innocent’ but then we revert to the more mature May - one who is more sophisticated and wiser - hence the black fitted dress. the connecting thing is the trainers - she wears the same pair of trainers with all 3 of her main outfits (we don’t see her shoes in the dark green Tennis jumper from the last scene, but she’s probably wearing them then as well) its a thread that connects all the different versions of May we get in this episode.
Conversely, Darius dresses in the opposite direction - he’s more formally dressed when he’s at the Grant-Nash house, and more comfortably dressed when at his frat house - an interesting choice considering May is very dressed up by comparrison, but it shows how they are in two different places at this point - Darius is dressed in keeping with all his housemates and Mays outfit places her on the outside of them - she has more life experience (and it therefore more mature).
In many ways neither of these outfits really represent the May we’ve seen on our screens for the last 5+ years, unlike the two later outfits we see her in, which are far more typically May.
Tumblr media
I am in love with this outfit and Corrine looks incredible in it - its glorious, but it also plays into a couple of different themes for May - it is far more in keeping with May’s wardrobe than the previous outfits, blocked and bright jewel colours in modern and stylishly youthful designs, then we have the red/blue theme of the emergency services (a colour theme that 911 have been playing with since season 1 just not overly often in clothing its been more set and lighting!), but the blue cardigan/jacket is also the same colour as May’s dispatcher shirts, and that is very much intentional - its a call back to her past as a dispatcher, but the choice to use it in a jacket rather than the tee (because they could have had her in a blue tee which would’ve more closely resembled the dispatcher top) is symbolic of her putting that persona back on - how many times have we seen it done in film and tv (especially in superhero based stories) where a character either steps into or steps back into something and we see them putting on a jacket as a visual symbol of that change in mentality? this outfit is a visual support to the script - it shows us just how good of a dispatcher May is, and that what she learnt from working there is going to stand her in good stead for her life going forward.
Tumblr media
Hen
There is a whole lot going on with this outfit!! The leopard print is becoming a bit of a theme for Hen - we’re seeing her wearing clothes incorporating it an increasing amount, and both her outfits for this episode make use of it. This is especially pertinent as the use of leopard print on woman's clothing is considered to be a symbol of independence, confidence, non conformity and sexuality! It’s all tied to Hen being in a place of happiness - we saw her in it at her vow renewal, at the end of s5, but then we don’t see it again until after she has decided to give up on being a doctor.
Tumblr media
The other outfit we have Hen in is this brown and black plaid shirt with leopard print pockets with violet trousers. We have to have a conversation about this jacket and this scene because its a super important and a doozy - Hen’s jacket is pretty similar to bucks at equestrian centre, and in many ways the scene pays out in a not dis-similar fashion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s an interesting choice because it directly parallels their positions in those story arcs - buck being there and being supportive of Eddie and now Hen filling the same role for Buck.
I think it’s actually an important direction the show is taking this. Yes of course we all desperately want Eddie to be there for Buck - and I’m sure he will be down the line, but, actually someone other than Eddie being there for Buck - especially if we start to get buck exploring his sexuality and his feelings for Eddie as a part of the sperm donor arc, is really important. Hen is the perfect person here for Buck to confide in - she can be supportive in all aspects of his journey, a position Eddie cannot fill at this moment because neither of them are ready (in the same way that the shooting was brought up at the equestrian centre by Buck, but then not talked about because they weren’t ready then) and Eddie is too close to the centre of everything Buck is going through a especially when you consider that there is a fairly large part of bucks saying yes to being a sperm donor that stems from being a guardian not a father - a reaffirmation if you will of bucks internal monologue that says he’s always the back up plan (which stems from the Daniel of it all not from the will of it all) and so being asked to be a donor just solidifies his thinking there.
It’s really clever writing and costuming from the show and in fact just adds further proof to the Buddie is going canon arguement. Because that scene more generally was a parallel to the equestrian centre scene from s5, even bucks green shirt places him in the same position as Eddie in their respective scenes. It’s starting to make me wonder if we’ve actually in the middle of bucks ‘breakdown’ rather than waiting for it to happen and his is going to unfold in more of a gentle but bumpy descent rather than Eddie’s more explosive one
Christopher
Christophers suit - a really interesting one for me - the implication being that they did in fact buy a suit for and attend the christening of Ana’s niece (or whoever it was) but that things have changed - the addition of the subtle check patterning (I mean I’m sure Gavin has also grown a fair amount in the last year) so a new suit would have been needed anyway, but they could have got a plain one - meaning the addition of the check is important. It fits in with my check theory and is suggestive of Chris being in danger in the future, but it could also serve as a form of reminder that Eddie’s previously chosen path (Ana) was the dangerous one (hence there being the reference to ‘the last time you wore it’) if we take that concept then it’s yet another subtle hint that for Eddie the heteronormative lifestyle that he tried to create was nothing more than a fantasy that was dangerous in reality (ending up in hospital having a panic attack and then later having a breakdown)
Tumblr media
I’m also very interested in the fact that we’ve only really seen Chris wearing blue and grey so far this season (with the green and blue pj ‘s being the only exception to the rule and even they had blue in them!). We do see Chris in a fairly large amount of grey, but there is usually an even balance of other brighter colours along side the grey.  I’ve been looking at his costumes more widely and its actually kind of interesting - the grey tends to be worn in scenes where Christopher isn’t the one we should be focusing on in the scene - when whomever he’s with is actually the focus (think equestrian centre or suit shopping or the slippery slope pyjamas from 5x10)
Eddie
Blue shirted Eddie my beloved!! I adore this shirt - because of the way its been designed to look a bit worn around the edges - it says so so much about Eddie and where he’s at.
Tumblr media
Its of course easy to draw a comparison with the dream sequence in 5x14 when Eddie is in a lighter blue shirt, which has longer sleeves and a pocket - this was a fantasy turned nightmare, it wasn’t really Eddie at all.
By comparison, the tee from 6x08 being darker and blending in very nicely with the bed spread and the carpet stripes. but the main thing is the difference in fit to the two tees - the one from 5x14 is much looser in fit on Eddie - whereas the one from 6x08 fits him like a glove. The ‘designer’ wearing along the seams and edges in this instance just adds to the idea that Eddie is comfortable in himself - Eddie is in a good place - the shade of blue tells us this - its a brighter navy - a colour of confidence and security and the conversation with Carla about keeping fantasies to oneself because talking about them makes them true is only further emphasised by the use of this colour for this.
Tumblr media
I’m starting to think I’m going to have to name this jacket the Dad mode jacket - we’ve only seen him wear it when in a scene with Carla, and when something happens that is significant for both Eddie and Christopher equally - the parents evening when Eddie meets Ana for the first time, 5x10 when Chris has a nightmare that pushes Eddie into deciding that he needs to leave active firefighting and the 118 and now this scene - where Chris goes to his first school dance, but Eddie is contemplating the fact that reality can be better than fantasy. Its a real full circle moment as well - from beginning an arc where Eddie tries to force himself to move on (in a school related environment no less), to a mid-point where he starts his breakdown and finally to a moment where he is in a good place and actually ready to move forward - its in someways a moment where this arc is tied up for Eddie (to the point where I wouldn’t be surprised if we actually didn’t see this jacket again) because we actively see him letting Christopher go - he’s no longer hiding behind being a father and we now get to essentially begin a new one with him - exploring who he is (without Chris) anyone??  The olive green top is also a nice touch - because not only does it play into army Eddie and carry on his costume theme, its darker - theres more growth and it gives us a brown/green combination - growth and stability essentially. Eddie is happy and its a glorious thing to see 😍
Tumblr media
Buck
More vertical stripes on Buck!!! they really are going all in on this theme this season! the fun thing is that this shirt ties in with the one from the end of 6x01 - yes this has grey rather than blue stripes, but the idea that I mentioned in my 6x01 meta about Buck beginning to figure things out and understand himself better holds true here. The 6x01 scene was about Buck moving forward - the moving of the arm chair a symbol of that, but one that is also not really all its cracked up to be (its hopeful, but also lonely and representative of how buck has closed himself off even to his family), this scene is, again, showing us a Buck moving forward - this time we see him move on from donating sperm by being Uncle Buck (the very thing he will essentially be reduced to if the donation is successful) so its key here that we see him being run ragged by his niece - that babysitting her isn’t actually as fun as the fantasy Buck probably envisioned it being in his head - the narrowing of the stripes are giant red flag on how the sperm donor story is going to go because the 6x01 shirt is before he’s asked to be a donor - this one comes after the donation has been made. I think we need to keep an eye out for Buck wearing cream and vertical stripes in the coming episodes because I think it will give us a good few clues about where Buck is at - if the stripes stay narrow or if we see them beginning to widen out again!
Tumblr media
I found Bucks maroon hoodie an interesting choice for this scene (although not sure tucking it into ones jeans is necessarily a vilid fashion choice!). As we know, Buck has an interesting relationship with wearing maroon specifically t-shirts and hoodies and its very much connected with his family - in season 2 we see him wearing it in connection to big talks with Maddie - about Maddie staying and about Abby, before we see him wearing it in connection with Eddie and Chris in episode 10 for the first time.
After that the - tees become about the Diaz boys while the hoodies connect in with Maddie (and more widely the Buckley-Hans) Buck wearing a maroon hoodie in this scene only further confirms the theory.
Then there is the watch still there on his wrist. I’m brining it up for this costume because its a pointed choice to have it on the outside of a longer sleeve. This season we haven’t seen buck without his watch once (other than where he’s wearing turnouts and you can’t see) which is unusual for Buck - up to this point he’s always worn his watch while in uniform, but in civvies, its been about 50:50 on if he’s been wearing it or not and when he’s in long sleeves we see him wearing it less. this makes Bucks watch wearing super important - and we’ve seen it focused on several times this season so far - this is just the latest moment (because that watch is reflecting light of the face even when Buck is in the darkness and moving towards the light!)
The white high tops are back and looking a little less than their usual pristine which is interesting - because its suggestive that Bucks journey towards happiness and building a family is less pure than before - this to me is very much a good thing - Buck has a tendency to be idealistic and the shoes have reflected this in the fact they’ve been so clean, the fact we’re now seeing them looking a bit more lived in (and in this episode) suggests that Bucks learning that dreams don’t have to be perfect, and actually the ones that are a little lived in are better than the shiny idealistic ones!
Why his trousers are so short I will never know - its not something we’ve seen to quite this extreme on him before - I’m working with the theory it was something he did while moving the cute little pink bed!
Tumblr media
Firstly - I am living for the fact that this shirt is so see-through you can fully see the vest he has on underneath it 😂 but in all seriousness - I made a mini meta about the bts we got of Buck in his preppy outfit and spoke about how I thought we might see Buck progressing through increasingly darker green shades as the sperm donor storyline unfolds - now he’s made his donation. this shirt is so far proving the theory (only 1 shirt in, so it could all go wrong from here, but right now I’m winning!), its one I really like because its a double whammy of showing growth - both through the use of green , but also through it becoming increasingly dark - think about how the leaves on trees are always a much more bright and lighter green in spring and they darken up over the course of summer. same thing with these shirts. I also love the transparency of the shirt - it ties back into the whole arc of Buck hiding his feelings from others - and that he’s a bit more transparent than he perhaps thinks he is.
Tumblr media
How I managed to sneak 40 pictures into this post I’ll never know, but I did it!!!
If you’ve made it to the end then I thank you - have a cookie on me 🍪🍪🍪
I hope you’ve enjoyed my deep dive ramblings on costume for 6x08 - drop me a reblog or a comment to let me see your thoughts - I love reading them!!

WIP Wednesday
Tagged by @alyxmastershipper @spotsandsocks @swiftiediaz. Thank you lovelies
Two things this evening
9-1-1 - The Letters (Buddie)
A collection of letters written by Evan Buckley in the years following his separation from Eddie Diaz. Brackets and all (for now).
To the finder of this letter,
My name is Evan Buckley. At present, I reside at [address] in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Also in residence are my wife, Lucy, and our two dogs, [name] and [name]. I would never claim to live here, for that requires living. And my heart hasn’t beat properly in ages.
I never wished to revisit these moments, nor transcribe them. However, it is at Lucy’s insistence that I am reluctantly doing so. She has this notion that it will help quell the ache, and perhaps ease the nightmares. Both the result of losing my beloved, the other half of my heart and soul.
It is of little consequence to you as the reader, I suppose, but I still feel it necessary to explain the arrangement Lucy and I have agreed upon. The conditions we choose to live with because of the circumstances we could not decide for ourselves.
After my father’s death I was forced to return home. To take my place as head of the household to provide for my mother, and sister, Maddie. I came to protect her most of all, only to discover I had lost her anyway. She only ever wished to see me happy. In pursuit of this, she married an abominable human being who shall not be named here. If I do nothing else with my remaining time on earth, it shall be to see to it his name is lost to history.
Regarding the matter of Lucy. We met shortly after my return, during an outing with my mother. It was a festival in the park with musicians and acrobats. The sort of thing where young men court young ladies, and mothers bring their unmarried children to parade them about. Clearly I was the latter. Of every lady Mother attempted to force me to become smitten by (or as she later put it, be tolerant of) I was most intrigued by the fair-haired woman operating the flower cart. We did not speak that day, not in words, only in exchanged glances. For reasons I did not yet know, I already understood she would be vital for me and I for her.
It would be three more weeks, and dozens more disappointed potential wives, before we held a formal conversation. Mother had, of course, observed the shared looks I was attempting to hide less and less. She voiced her distaste for the situation immediately, informing me I must focus my efforts on finding a wife, despite my insistence that I did not see the purpose. Under the ruse of purchasing a bloom for the latest disappointment-to-be, I paid a visit to Lucy’s cart. It was perhaps not the most well thought out plan, but it was the one I needed most to work.
I stated my name and title, declared I had no debts nor lovers or gambling afflictions and, if she could declare the same, I wished to marry her. Lucy promptly rejected my offer, telling me to return when I was a paying customer and not a deceptive suitor.
Schitt's Creek - Ch 2 of I know all your secrets
David paces the length of the sitting room, wired and anxious. The penthouse, measuring however many thousands of square feet, is still too small. He’s already shed his jacket, hanging it carefully in the walk-in closet. He’s not a monster, after all. But it does little to ease the tension that continues building under his skin, making him spark with need. Eager to get his hands on Patrick again.
Patrick’s ragged breathing echoes in his mind, the way he writhed under David’s touch, so desperate for release he was practically begging.
David won’t be alone for long. Patrick has always come, will always. David knows this, and it terrifies him. Yet, with every minute that passes, every errant sound that makes him turn toward the door, his doubts grow louder.
Agent Brewer was supposed to be a personal conquest, a challenge. A one time experience. There was no room for a ‘next time’. David should have known better. From the first time he noticed Patrick in Monsanto he wanted him. He took one look at the cocky, competent sonofabitch – wearing his stupid midrange denim and braided belt – and wanted to take him apart. To ruin him.
He finally got his chance at their third encounter in Vienna. There was no bed, not so much as a fancy, expensive chaise lounge. Only the two of them, hidden in the shadows of Neptune’s Fountain. Not how David envisioned it, but he wouldn’t exactly call getting buttoned-up Agent Brewer off against ancient architecture a loss. Especially not when he sought David out the following evening and let himself be reduced to a whimpering mess, barely capable of stringing two syllables together.

Chapter 6: Oh how we regret those things we do
The next few weeks were nerve-wracking for the Buckley siblings. As much as the pack tried to reassure them, they always felt like they were looking over their shoulder and waiting for an ambush. Bobby and Eddie had upgraded the Diaz house home security system. The pack spent more time together since there was safety in numbers.
Eddie was helping Christopher with his homework when he heard shouting and then felt something he’d never felt before, a sort of phantom pain in his side that made it hard to breathe for a moment. It set every alarm bell off in his mind and had his inner alpha snarling. "Close the door and do not open it for anyone but pack," the alpha told his son. Eddie hit the silent alarm in his phone that connected to his pack and rushed towards the front of the house. The alarm would send out a message to all of them. The alpha's blood boiled at the sight he found when he reached the kitchen. Buck was clutching his bloodied side as Doug held Maddie at knifepoint. Margaret Buckley standing off to the side. Eddie moved to reach his mate, to help Maddie, to do anything really but was stopped by a shout from Doug and a pained sob from Maddie.
"Don't," Doug spat.
"If you do this, if he dies, there isn't a place you could go that I won't find you," Eddie growled.
"Then maybe I'll just kill you too," Doug said with a smirk. "Really traumatize that broken mutt of yours."
"Doug," Maddie said, causing the abusive alpha to drag the knife tip closer, drawing a line of blood as he did.
"No!" Buck shouted.
"Shut it!" Doug demanded, moving to try and kick Buck. The knife pulled away from Maddie as he did.
Buck saw his chance. The omega used what leverage he had to kick Doug. The act caught the knife-wielding alpha by surprise, giving Maddie a chance to get away. She rushed to her brother. That was all the opening Eddie needed. His inner alpha and his military training took over with ease. He lunged at Doug before he could fully recover from what happened. He grabbed Doug's wrist and smashed it against the counter causing Doug to lose grip on the knife. Eddie kicked the knife away and moved to twist Doug's arm, but the other man had finally begun to put up a fight. Eddie didn't let up. He was about to slam his knee into the intruder's side when Doug froze. Eddie looked up to see Maddie standing over both of them. The knife driven deep into Doug's side. Eddie shoved the other alpha off of him and got to his feet.
"You okay?" He asked Maddie quickly. She nodded. Eddie looked down at Doug, grabbed another knife from the block on the counter, and hands it to Maddie. "Don't take your eyes off of him. He moves, do it again." Maddie nodded again.
Eddie grabbed a first aid kit from the cupboard and dropped down beside his mate. "Fuck," he stated as he finally looked at Buck's injury. "This is going to hurt like hell," the alpha said as he put pressure on the wound. His actions earned him a pained whine from the omega.
Noises and a shout drew the alpha's attention. Doug was trying to get to his feet. Eddie was about to move when the front door crashed open and Athena was there. Her gun drawn. Bobby at her side. Everything moved faster after that. Bobby called it in as Athena secured the scene. Maddie ran to get Eddie's full med kit from the hall. Doug froze as Athena stood over him with her gun pointing at him.
"Don't even think about it," Athena said.
Bobby's phone was pressed to his ear as he talked to 911 dispatch as he grabbed a dishcloth and knelt down. He pressed the cloth into the man's stab wound, not really bothering to be too gentle about it.
Maddie rushed over and dropped down beside Buck and Eddie.
"I'm sorry, Buck. I'm so sorry," she sobbed.
"'S fine, Mads," Buck managed as Eddie did everything he could to patch his mate up as best he could. Maddie froze as she looked around the room.
Despite the chaos, Eddie caught the shift in her scent. "Maddie?" The alpha looked up at her.
"She's gone."
"What?" Eddie asked, glancing around before it registered what she had meant. Margaret Buckley was gone. Eddie's eyes went wide. "Christopher!" He shouted and Bobby took off down the hall. Maddie on his heels.
Maddie froze in the doorway. Margaret Buckley was sat on the boy's bed, a confused and scared Christopher beside her.
"This is not how this was supposed to go," Margaret Buckley said. "Evan was supposed to be grateful. We found him a mate."
"Mom," Maddie said as she eased around Bobby. The prime's hand moved to stop her but Maddie shook her head, and gave his hand a quick squeeze. She moved into the room. They had no idea if Margret had a weapon or not. "Let Christopher go."
"Evan was always so difficult," Margaret continued.
"Difficult? He did everything you guys ever told him to. You medicated him until it nearly killed him, took him away from his friends, from me."
"You left," Margaret said, her eyes narrowing at her daughter.
"You want Buck to be grateful, then let his son go," Maddie stated as she eased closer to Christopher. The sound of sirens in the distance got closer. "If you care for Evan at all, even the slightest, you'll let Christopher go."
When Margaret didn't seem to try to stop her Maddie went over and got Christopher off the bed. Bobby was quick to scoop up the boy and take him to the hall but made sure to keep his line of sight on Maddie. The prime was thankful when Chimney and Hen appeared in the hall. Hen was quick to take Christopher into his master bedroom to try and shield the boy from the chaos. The boy was crying but Bobby knew he was in good hands.
"I never wanted any of this," Margaret said, drawing the prime's attention back to the small bedroom.
"No, but you didn't stop it either," Maddie stated.
"Your father-" the mother started but Maddie wasn't having it.
"My father thought his son deserved to be punished for things he can't control. Do you think if Buck could have changed from an omega by sheer force of the will he wouldn't have? Do you think he enjoyed being drugged and abused? He would crawl into my bed at night and sob. You want him to be grateful, you should have called the cops the first time dad hit him. You should have told the doctors the truth. You should have done something!" Maddie shouted. "No, you earned his loathing. You let him live every day filled with pain and fear. He owes you NOTHING! I owe you nothing. I have spent my whole life picking up the broken pieces of Buck's life. I'm just glad I no longer have to do it alone." Maddie looked over at Bobby. "I hope the control and the lies you lived were worth it because the world now gets to see what Buck and I always knew. You are the monsters we grew up fearing. The ones that haunt our nightmares. We won't let you hurt us anymore." Maddie held her head high and refused to back down until she felt a hand on her shoulder. Bobby had moved into the room to let the police officer in to deal with Margaret.
"Christopher?" She asked.
"Hen has him," Bobby assured her. "You did good. Let's go check on your brother."

There were a lot of things that even the therapist couldn't help her with, and those would only come with time and coping with a whole lot of 'what could have happened' thoughts. Howard getting stabbed was wholly her fault as she put everyone in danger when she fled to LA. Especially Buck, as she knew that Doug and Buck never got along, even before she ever married him.
And while she was in no danger now, it didn't help her mind rest. It didn't help her get over the fact that she murdered her husband and now she was sitting with a large check in her purse she was still guilty as hell about having in the first place. She hadn't told Buck about the settlement because she wasn't sure if she was going to keep it or not and it wasn't something she could bring up to Howard, either.
Just so much had happened that she couldn't process that she found herself sleeping on Buck's couch since she had come over and let herself in sometime in the middle of the night as she couldn't sleep and couldn't think of anything else to do. Buck hadn't been home, he had been at the station and she just curled up on one end and had a blanket pulled up to her chin, tears still staining her cheeks. For being the older of the two, she felt hopeless to be any help to anyone right then, and she didn't even hear the door open some time after the sun came up.

*****
Buck’s nose broke the water first, followed quickly by the rest of his face.  Letting out a huge gasp, Buck’s arms flailed as he adjusted to being back above water.  He took deep, greedy breaths, sucking in air as quickly as he could without causing himself to hyperventilate.  It felt like he had been beneath the water for hours, his lungs still hurt from holding his breath for so long.  But now, as he instinctively started to tread water, he had to figure out his next problem.
Where the hell was he?
Water stretched out as far as his eyes could see.  There was no land anywhere.  No rocks, no grass, no beach.  Only the cold, dark grey of the sea.
The only sound was the swish his hands made against the water, the steady in and out motions that he learnt from his time with the SEALs and his hitched breaths, as he slowly realized….
He was alone.
Buck woke with a gasp, his hands reaching out to grab whatever was closest to him, which turned out to be a towel.
Pushing himself up against his headboard, he tried to catch his breath, gripping the towel tightly like it was a lifeline.  There had been nothing out there in the middle of the water, nothing but him, and the coarseness of the material was helping to remind him where he was, grounding him back in the present.
He was in his loft, in his bed.  Glancing over at his clock to confirm his hypothesis, he saw the 3:00AM in bright red light.  Middle of the night, he still had another three hours before he had to get up for his next shift.  Everything was falling back into place.
But as he felt along the dark grey towel, he was surprised to find that the other end was wet.  And not damp, like he had been laying on it after a shower with wet hair.  But soaking wet, drops of water trailing off the end as he held it up in confusion.
He stood up quickly, shuffling over to toss the wet towel into the bedroom.  As he re-entered his bedroom, he noticed that there was a large damp spot spread across over half of the bed, likely due to the wet towel.  Not feeling like dealing with the mess, Buck pulled on his LAFD sweatshirt and headed downstairs to try to get a bit more sleep on the couch.  If he was falling asleep with a wet towel, he definitely needed as much sleep as he could get.
---
Christopher had fallen over the edge of the fire truck, his bright yellow shirt disappearing under the roll of the ocean.  Buck never hesitated, diving in right after him.  His eyes quickly adjusted to the water, his large irises fully opening.  Ducking under a piece of debris headed right towards him, he looked around him, from left to right, hoping to catch a flash of yellow.  Light shone through the water, causing distortions and shadows that only hindered his view.  But then, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Christopher.
Kicking through the water with a ferocity that surprised him, he propelled himself swiftly through the water after Christopher.  He swore he could almost hear the younger boy calling out for him before he was torn out of his view again.  No longer able to see him, Buck broke the water’s surface, hoping that maybe Christopher had managed to pull himself up on something, or someone had helped him out of the water.  But he was nowhere to be seen.  And neither was anything else for that matter.
Buck was sure that Christopher had been heading inland, and he had been following right behind him.  But where there were tall buildings lining the streets, submerged vehicles, screams and cries of pain...here, there was nothing.  Instead of being in the middle of a busy city street, surrounded by debris and bodies, there was nothing around him.  How could the city just disappear like that?
Had they been pushed out to the ocean?
“Christopher!” He tried to shout, but instead let out a strangled shout, almost like a bark.  He tried to call for Christopher again, but a wave came by, causing him to end up with a mouth full of salt water.
Gasping and choking on the taste of the ocean, Buck found himself falling back into the water, unable to get back to the surface.  He tried to hold his breath as long as possible, but eventually his body succumbed to the need for oxygen, and his mouth opened, water streaming into his lungs as his body continued to sink.
*Thump*
Buck barely made a sound as he fell onto the ground beside his bunk, his hip hitting the tiled floor hard.  Buck lurched back to a seated position, ignoring the pain as he looked around frantically for Christopher.  “Christopher!” he said, trying to shout but unable to make a sound louder than a whisper.
Buck flinched as a hand landed on his shoulder, but then relaxed as he realized who it belonged to, first due to the familiarity of the grip, and then as the room came back into focus, by the brown fluffy hair in front of him.  “Eddie, is Christopher okay?” Buck asked, blinking in confusion.  He needed the confirmation, needed to hear it from Eddie directly that his son was safe.
“Yes, he’s at home, with Carla,” Eddie explained gently.  A frown adorned his face, his eyes looked weary.  Buck had to physically stop himself from reaching out and touching Eddie, he wanted nothing more than to try to erase that frown.  He didn’t know why, but the sight of Eddie upset was like a knife to the gut.  But instead, his aborted movement led to him leaning on his hip heavily, and he inadvertently let out a whimper, causing the frown on Eddie’s face to deepen.
Before he could say anything or shake off his injury, Eddie was up, reaching down his arms to help Buck off of the floor.  “Here, let me check that out,” Eddie said, and had Buck’s sweatpants halfway down his hip before Buck could say no.  Blushing a deep red, Buck willed his body not to react as Eddie’s gentle but strong hands traced along the quickly forming bruise.  “Looks okay,” Eddie commented, letting Buck pull his pants back up, which he did rather quickly.
Buck nodded, trying to look anywhere but at Eddie as he shifted back onto his bunk.  A few awkward minutes passed before Eddie broke the silence.  “Were you dreaming about the tsunami?” Eddie asked.
“Yeah,” Buck answered reluctantly, hoping that Eddie would leave it at that.  He didn’t have the energy to explain the dream, his heart still pounding at the memory of Christopher slipping under the water.
“You saved him, Buck,” Eddie said firmly, reaching out to squeeze his hand.  “I know it won’t stop the nightmares, but try to remember.  You. Saved. Him.”
Buck nodded and waved Eddie back to his bed, needing to be alone.  Buck shifted over to his side, glad that Eddie couldn’t see the couple tears that dripped down his cheek in response to his comment.  .
That’s not how he remembered it.
---
Buck wandered into the station, feeling dead on his feet.  He had been tempted to call in, unsure of whether or not he had had enough rest to be working safely.  And if it hadn’t been for the lawsuit, he probably would have.  But having been back for only a few months now, he didn’t want to give anyone any excuse to put him back on the bench, or back as the man behind.
Buck continued to have nightmares of the water, variations of him alone in the sea and of him searching for Christopher in the tsunami.  He had thought that opening up to someone would help, but he wasn’t ready to try a therapist, not again.  Normally, he would talk to Eddie about this sort of thing, but since part of his nightmares consisted of losing Christopher, he didn’t want to remind Eddie of that horrible day either.  So he tried confiding in his older sister, figuring that she wouldn’t have been as impacted as his co-workers.  Yet, as soon as Buck mentioned that he had been having dreams of being alone in the water, Maddie only got more and more tense, her foot tapping an irregular pattern on the floor.  Sensing that she was scared, Buck quickly stopped his explanation, shrugging it off, and was relieved to see her relax as he carried into a funny story that happened on his way to work the other day.
Since that failed discussion, his nightmares had only increased in intensity, leading to a new problem: sleep-walking.  Buck kept finding himself waking up in different places all over his loft, the couch, a dining room chair, on the floor of the kitchen.  Last night, he had woken up, cramped awkwardly in the bathtub.  A thin stream of cool water was running from the tap, which Buck quickly turned off, relieved that he at least had enough sense while sleep-walking to not push the plug in, because who knows how long he had been sleeping in the tub.  He reached for a towel, his whole body shivering as he stood up in the cool air.  He was also glad he hadn’t worn any clothes to bed that night, because wet clothes were the worst.
He briefly made a wish that it would be a slow day, and he could curl up in the bunk room for some rest, but the sound of the alarm went off as soon as he finished changing into his uniform for the day.  Groaning out loud, he ran out to meet his crew, shaking his head at the curious looks that were being shot in his direction.  He didn’t want to talk about it.
It wasn’t long before the 118 was pulling up outside the Los Angeles Aquarium.  Apparently there had been a medical emergency right beside the sea lion exhibit, which was all the way at the back of the building.
As Buck and Eddie pushed the gurney through the crowds that were slowly exiting, Buck tried to suppress the tremble he felt in his hands, as tendrils of fear floated through his body.  He hadn’t connected the dots when they were told where they were going, but as he continued to walk through the darkened building, his heart rate continued to rise.  They were completely surrounded by water; large glass tanks that allowed Buck to clearly see the creatures in the replicated ocean around him, and the amount of water they contained felt like the size of the ocean too.  The only separation between him and Eddie and the water was a thin, thin piece of glass.
Buck had seen the power of the water, the anger of the ocean that day of the tsunami.  The strength as it ripped through buildings, cars, and people.  That piece of glass was a flimsy partition, a temporary barrier at best.  Buck almost stopped breathing at the thought of the tank breaking, the water bursting through...and Eddie...Eddie standing no chance as it took him away, just like it had taken Christopher.
“Buck?  Buck, are you alright?”  Eddie’s voice broke through the din of the crowd, interrupting Buck’s devastating thoughts.  Buck nodded his head yes, although he could tell that Eddie didn’t believe him, and continued to push the gurney in the direction that Eddie indicated.
This was not the time to have a panic attack.  People needed help.  He could freak out later.
When they arrived at the sea lion exhibit, Hen and Chimney were already helping up their patient, who appeared to have gotten lightheaded due to the crowds.  Checking the young woman’s vitals again, they were reassured that she wouldn’t need to go to the hospital, and Buck let out a barely hidden sigh, relieved that they would be soon leaving the aquarium.
“Hey Buck!” Chimney said, having looked at the exhibit a bit closer as they finished packing up.  “I think this sea lion is waving at you!” He said with a chuckle, motioning for Buck to take a look.
Rolling his eyes, Buck turned to look into the tank, really not wanting to, but not wanting the teasing from Chimney either.  “That’s not a sea lion,” he said, almost instinctively as he peered closer at the aquatic animal.  “That’s a seal.”
“That’s right!” Chirped a nearby tour guide, who had been listening in on their conversation.  “Sea lions and seals are often confused with one another,” she added, stepping closer to the two firefighters.
Buck could hear Chimney asking how he knew that, but he had tuned out his almost brother-in-law at the point, his focus narrowing in on the seal.  The seal was a dark brown colour, with lots of smaller, lighter spots across his body.  Buck wasn’t sure how he knew, but he was fairly sure it was a male seal.
Buck took another step closer to the tank, his head tilting as he looked in.  He no longer felt the panic, the fear of the water that he had felt when he first stepped in the building, but instead a calmness settled over him.  The water called out to him, with its gentle promises, urging him to come closer and closer until his nose bumped against the glass.  Buck’s heart ached with the sweetness of the song, his whole body thrumming with the need to answer the ancient call that was whispering seductively into his soul.
Buck’s eyes widened as the seal looked at him directly, waving his flipper as if he was greeting a friend.  A brother, the water whispered to him, continuing it’s captivating chants, as Buck stood there, entranced.
“Yes, that’s Daniel,” the employee said, her voice breaking whatever spell had been woven as she introduced the seal.  “He’s a favourite here at the aquarium, very friendly and incredibly smart.”
Buck nodded, shaking his head in confusion as he stumbled back from the exhibit.  He suddenly couldn’t remember why he had moved so close to the tank, or why no one else seemed to be interested in the mammals.  Buck forced himself to walk further away, gripping the side of the gurney tightly, as if it would somehow save him from the water, from whatever magnetic pull it had on him only a few moments ago.
But as the 118 headed back towards their truck, he couldn’t help but look back over his shoulder.
And Daniel was still there, staring at him until they were out of sight.

In Case of Emergency (Ch 7/10)
Ao3 | 2/13.3k | Buddie | Status: Incomplete
Prev. Chapter | Next Chapter
Chapter 7: You obviously haven't tried my cereal! Just a little slice of domesticity between Buck and Eddie, with Eddie planning on surprising Buck with a thankyou dinner for organising a Christmas that didn’t involve being apart from his son. Set post 3x10: Christmas Spirit.
All Eddie wanted to do was make Buck dinner as a thank you for playing a part in organising Christmas with everyone. He knew that even with Buck adamantly saying otherwise, that the main reason for it was for him and Chris. He saw the way Buck looked when Chris had asked to have Christmas with him, and he knew that Buck hated letting anyone down, especially Chris.
So, he had messaged Maddie, asking her to keep Buck distracted and out of the apartment for the afternoon while he got to work on a lasagne, sourcing the ingredients and letting himself into Buck’s apartment as a surprise for him when he got home. It was nothing extravagant, but he knew how much Buck appreciated a home-cooked meal and that it was one of his favourite meals.
It was no secret that he was not the best in the kitchen, oftentimes when they did have dinner at his place it involved either takeaway or Buck being the one doing the cooking. Which is why he thought he might try his hand at doing something unexpected, as a form of appreciation instead of more gifts.
Unfortunately for him, even with confidence, a well-laid plan and a solid recipe, a meal could be easily undone by a cook’s ineptitude and this time was no exception.
** ** ** ** ** ** **
It had been a few months since they’d had that morning conversation and things have been going steady for Eddie and Buck. It felt right and easy, easier than either of them could have thought it would be. They decided that day to go slowly, privately for the time being as they learned more of each other through this new lens of their relationship.
They were pretty sure that the others hadn’t picked up on anything different between them and they were perfectly content to keep a lid on their relationship in the workplace; that was something that they had made clear with each other at the very beginning, to keep their personal life separate from work, and away from prying eyes at least for the time being.
However, despite their attempts at keeping their relationship quiet for as long as possible, there was no escaping the observant eyes of one Maddie Buckley, who, after a couple of months of putting two and two together, eventually managed to coax the truth out of Buck before dinner one evening while Chim was still on the way from his apartment. She had been quick to both celebrate the development and promised that she’d keep their secret until they were ready to publicly be a couple.
Throughout those months Buck was over at Eddie’s more often, spending more and more time with him and Chris. By Christmastime, Buck was surprised to learn that he was Chris’s second choice after knowing that he couldn’t spend it with his dad. It was heart-warming to know that his boyfriend’s son already saw him as family enough to want to spend Christmas with him and, he couldn’t bear disappointing the kid.
It didn’t take much to get the idea set into motion, especially once he shared it with Athena and let her have full reign in getting everything organised. That day was his gift, making sure everyone in the team could still have the chance to celebrate Christmas on the day and in his head, he said it was for everyone but deep in his heart he knew the true reason was that it was always meant to be a gift for Eddie and Chris.
He never expected any sort of thank you, that was never the purpose nor the point of having Christmas in the firehouse, besides seeing everyone’s joy was thank you enough. He certainly never expected to find Eddie preparing dinner in his apartment while he’d been out with Maddie taking advantage of post-Christmas sales in the limbo week before New Year’s.
Even from the other side of the door, he could hear the sounds of someone in the kitchen and he grinned to himself knowing there to be only one person who had both the access and the comfortability to be in his apartment without him being present.
This was something that had become a common occurrence between each other. Letting themselves in regardless of whether or not the other was home, Buck doing it more often than Eddie; making themselves comfortable knowing that the other would be home soon. So, it was quite the pleasant surprise for the roles to be reversed especially as he saw the amusing sight of Eddie frowning at the dish in front of him, skewer in hand.
“What’s all this?” he uttered as a way of announcing his presence, unable to contain himself as he closed the door with his foot and watched as Eddie startle minutely as he placed the mysterious dish back in the oven before fiddling with the timer dial and then smoothly leaned one arm against the countertop beside him, in an attempt to mask his earlier surprise.
“And a hello to you too,” responded Eddie with that near mocking tone that Buck couldn’t help but love. It was enough for him to immediately drop the bags where he was standing and stride over to his partner, in more ways than one, and quickly kiss his lips in apology and greeting.
“Hey there,” he murmured as he loosely wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist before breaking eye contact with Eddie as he surveyed the kitchen with a furrowed brow before returning his gaze back to Eddie’s, “I didn’t forget any plans, did I? If I knew you were here, I would’ve come home earlier.”
Eddie hummed contentedly and brought his arms around Buck, keeping their bodies impossibly close, “Nope, no plans. I just wanted to surprise you with dinner to thank you for what you did for Christmas.”
Touched that Eddie felt the need to thank him for something that he felt didn’t need thanks, he looked away bashfully, “I didn’t really do anything, just talked to Athena about it, she did all the work.”
“Don’t sell yourself short, I’m sure you did more than you let on. No matter, it meant the world to Chris,” Eddie tilted his head up and claimed Buck’s lips with his own before parting once again, “and to me, so thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Buck said softly, and pecked him on the lips once more before stepping out of Eddie’s arms and moved past him to look over the saucepans still holding some of the leftover sauces, “So, what did you decide to make?”
With his back to Eddie, he didn’t see the frown fall on his face, but he could hear the hint of barely concealed irritation colour his voice, “Lasagne. I was hoping Maddie would keep you out for a bit longer, so it’d be ready by the time you got home, but it’s not going exactly how I planned.”
“I knew she was up to something, there was just something in the way she was acting.” Buck shook his head as he murmured to himself, bemused, now understanding the conniving glint in his sister’s eyes.
“Anything I can help with?” he asked Eddie as he sampled both of the sauces and felt his mouth water in response, half surprised how well they’ve turned out.
Eddie hip-checked Buck to move him away from the oven door as the timer went off and reclaimed the oven mitts to bring the dish out of the oven. The cheesy top was a deep golden at this point and the edges were darkened to a near-burned look.
Buck watched with mild amusement as Eddie skewered it again and groaned in frustration, “Only if you know anything about softening the pasta sheets, I used the oven- ready ones because they were supposed to be easy but they’re still crunchy in there. I hoped that maybe the extra ten minutes I put it in for would’ve helped.”
Seeing the tension in Eddie’s shoulders and knowing how much he hated feeling like he was failing at something, Buck crowded up behind him, placing his hands on Eddie’s hips and pressed a kiss to his shoulder as he peeked over, reaching around to make his own assessment.
“Not all hope is lost just yet. We might be able to salvage this with some boiling water, plastic wrap, and foil,” he said thoughtfully as he stepped back and leveraged himself up to sit on the island bench unfazed as Eddie looked at him expectantly before frowning.
“Oh, I see, by we you mean me?” he responded in playful sarcasm with a hand on his hip as he took in Buck’s new position.
Buck laughed and spread his hands in an open gesture, “Eds, I am entirely confident that you can do this without me.”
“Except for the fact that I have no idea what I’m doing. This isn’t part of the recipe.” Eddie shot back a hint of anxiety in his voice, causing Buck to relent in his teasing, and clearly explained what needed to be done, suppressing a smile when Eddie’s face flooded with relief over having instructions to follow.
Half an hour later, he was watching with bated breath as Eddie cut through the now soft and pliable layers of the lasagne, looking as though he expected the dish to be completely inedible, much like the few dinners he’d attempted in the past.
It seemed in Eddie’s eyes it was nothing short of a miracle, considering his track record, and he voiced as much as they ate at the table, asking how he could have possibly known how to salvage their dinner aside from scraping off the sauces and trying again with a different pasta.
“Believe it or not, I did the exact same thing the first time I made it after moving away from home.”  Buck shrugged as he answered between mouthfuls, “and then searched online how to fix it without losing the whole batch.”
“Damn, and here I was thinking that you figured it out all on your own.”
“Sorry to disappoint but the internet is and will always be my best friend when it comes to cooking, it has yet to fail me on fixing any meal.” Buck proclaimed and then added as an aside, “not to mention, Bobby is a vault when it comes to problem-solving food.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Shortly thereafter as the dinner itself came to a close, the topic of conversation gravitated to Buck's shopping when Eddie’s eyes drifted to the abandoned bags by the door, reminding Buck of the gift that he’d almost forgotten about until now, having been caught up in the domestic vision of seeing his boyfriend cooking for him.
“Now I know you said Christmas lunch was a gift in and of itself, but I ordered this well before I even came up with that idea and it seems even more fitting that you get it now.”
He watched with pursed lips as he slid the already wrapped present across the table to Eddie, suppressing what was probably a shit-eating grin as he did so, knowing exactly how Eddie was going to react.
Eddie eyed it suspiciously as he opened it before standing arms outstretched as he dryly read the words out loud, “I can’t cook for shit, but it’s my turn.”
“Flip it over,” Buck suggested with a snort unable to contain the amusement of his own joke to himself especially when he could see how much effort Eddie was putting into trying to keep a straight face as he continued, “who says I can’t cook? You obviously haven’t tried my cereal!”
“One side for me and one side for Chris,” Buck supplied lightly, barely able to keep the laugh from his voice.
Eddie rolled his eyes in mock annoyance but couldn’t maintain the façade, eventually breaking down into chuckles as he threw the apron back in his face, “you’re a menace.”
“You know you love it,” Buck responded smugly.
“Hmm,” Eddie hummed thoughtfully, coyly playing off his amusement as he bracketed Buck’s body with his arms and distracted him with a kiss before speaking against Buck’s lips, “that’s for me to know and for you to find out.”

Meet cute AU: Maddie has lived in LA for a few years and Buck has just joined the 118 but she hasn’t met them yet. She’s at the park one day with her five year old son/daughter when they fall over and hurt their knee but it’s okay because this cute paramedic there with his nephew (Denny) is happy to help.
“CJ, you have to put the straw through the part with the little straw shaped hole,” Maddy laughs, watching as her son stabs the juice box everywhere but where he’s actually supposed to, “here, let me show you.”
“I can do it myself, mommy,” he huffs, and Maddie has to take a deep breath to keep from rolling her eyes because he definitely inherited the Buckley headstrongness and stubbornness from her. She wonders if it’s somehow genetic or if he just came to be that way through watching her, but whatever. There are worse traits a child could have, right? It’s better he be more like her than more like his father.
“Okay, just maybe take my advice and stick the straw where it’s supposed to go,” she offers, knowing she’s just going to have to sit back and accept the chaos and watch it play out.
Sometimes, watching the chaos is actually one of the enjoyable parts of parenting. Sometimes.
It sounds silly because CJ is five, but she feels like she didn’t actually start learning about parenting until this last year, when she left her husband and moved across the country to be near her brother. And Doug, of course, never wanted anything to do with being a father in the first place, so he had just let her pack up and leave with their son. She’s kept on waiting and waiting for retaliation since Doug had always threatened to kill her if she left, but so far he’s been out of sight and out of mind (mostly, she’ll always be a little afraid until the day he dies) and it honestly feels like a dream come true. Sure, parenting is hard but she finally gets to feel like a mom instead of a crisis negotiator like she was in their family home in Pennsylvania.
She’s so lost in her mind that she hadn’t noticed that her son had finally managed to get the straw through his grape juice box and had excitedly started to do a cartwheel. Only by the time she notices that he’s about to land his cartwheel right onto a bench, it’s too late for her to do anything.
She rushes over immediately, wincing both at her son’s cries and the fact that she can see the bone beneath his knee. Sure, she knows the skin above the knee is thin but it still doesn’t make seeing her son’s exposed bone any easier.
“Oh, oh god,” she murmurs, trying to feign calm for CJ’s sake, “it’s okay, CJ, we’ll get you all fixed up. Let me--”
“Hey,” a new voice calls from behind her, and she groans, expecting someone to mom shame her for taking her eyes of her son long enough for the injury to happen, “I’m a paramedic, do you need some help?”
“Oh, um, that would be great,” she nods, turning to look at the kind stranger in appreciation, “I’m a 9-1-1 operator so I know the instructions to give, but it would certainly be nice to have a professional be the one doing them.”
“You’re at dispatch?” he asks with a chuckle, “bet we’ve unknowingly met over the radio before. Now, let me take a look at this little guy’s knee. Hi, I’m Ch-- I’m Howie. What’s your name?”
“CJ,” her son sniffles, looking up at the handsome paramedic as tears fall down his face.
“Hi, CJ. This is my nephew Denny,” he says, gesturing back to a boy standing awkwardly behind him who Maddie hadn’t even noticed through her panic, “we were at the park playing, too. But accidents happen, you know? It’s not your fault. Denny here has had a few accidents, and so have I and I’m 41. And so has my daughter when she was your age.”
“You have a daughter?” Maddie asks, starting to put some pieces together; he has a scar on his forehead, Denny is the name of Hen’s son, he’s a paramedic... but Buck had never mentioned Chimney having a child of his own.
“Yeah, well, technically she’s my niece but that’s a long and funny story and I’m her legal guardian, so.”
“How old is she?” is Maddie’s next question, trying to buy time to find some confirmation that this is actually Chimney before she embarrasses herself asking.
“She’s uh, she’s 14 and now a teenager which is hard but she’s wonderful, and she looks just like her father. Not me, her biological dad, I mean.”
...Didn’t Buck mentioned that Chimney lost a brother.
“Um, this is going to sound weird, but I think you might work with my brother.”
“What? Oh-- are you Maddie? You said were a dispatcher.”
“Yeah, that’s me,” she nods a bit awkwardly, and Chimney looks like he wants to say something else to her but his attention turns back to CJ.
“Okay, buddy, this is going to be a little weird but I’m going to give you my shirt and you’re going to crumple it up and press it to your knee tight while your mom drives you to the hospital, okay?”
“Hospital?” CJ whimpers.
“For stitches yes, but that just means you’ll have an awesome scar like I do on my forehead.”
“How’d that happen?”
“I, uh, had a different sort of accident.”
There’s a beat of tense silence and Maddie knows the general story there and figures it’s probably not something he wants to explain to her son that he just met, so she’s quick to jump in.
“I should probably get him to the hospital, but thank you so, so much. It was nice to finally meet you, even like this.”
“Of course, m’still a paramedic when I’m off duty,” he shrugs, “and it was nice to meet you, too. You should come by the station sometime. We’re not scary, I promise.”
“Maybe I will,” she nods meekly, blushing a bit before she turns back to poor CJ, “okay, baby, we’re going to take a little trip to the hospital, and then when you’re done being the bravest boy, we’ll go get some ice cream. How does that sound?”
“Ice cream!” he shouts excitedly.
“Yeah, I figured.”
