Edogawa Ranpo

Morality:

Although he’s a part of the Armed Detective Agency, he does not care for others. Like most of the characters in this show, he is not inherently a good person, it’s quite the contrary actually. He only cares about himself and those he’s close to, otherwise, he does not care. You would then ask, ‘why does he help people?’ and I shall tell you that that is not his intention. All he wants to do is to solve crimes, mysteries and puzzles. Helping others just comes as an added thing to those activities.

Insecurities and personality:

I suppose that these two things generally tie in together, but here I believe that they do so more than usual. This is simply because Ranpo’s overly confident personality is simply nothing but a façade. Now this was shown in two instances; the light novel that centres around the formation of the Armed Detective Agency, the anime, and the manga, especially the later chapters.

I will start to cover the light novel, as it comes first chronologically. In the light novel, he is introduced as a loud and confident child, who’s incredibly certain in his deductive abilities and in his intelligence. However, as we move forward in the novel, we discover that he only puts on this mask of confidence and of being incredibly self-assured because of how people treat him. Because of his mind, people treat him like he’s a monster. They are harsh to him. They do not understand him. He accepts that later on, with Fukuzawa’s help as he told Ranpo that he had an ability, but not at this specific stage. Then, he did not know why people reacted so terribly to him whenever he would point out their errors, because he never knew that he shouldn’t do that. He also never knew how to stop analyzing what’s going on around him, and that made the world unbearable for him. Aside from that, he thought that what he was doing was something that everyone does, because his parents, the only people he ever interacted with a lot, told him so, and because of that he never really understood why people see him as a ‘monster’ or as something that’s inhumane in intelligence. So, to help him, Fukuzawa lied to him, telling him that he had an ability, which made sense to Ranpo, because there, to him, was no other logical explanation, although Ranpo knows it’s not correct, is that he has an ability.

Now, after all of this, you would expect that his confidence would be genuine, right? Wrong. Proof of the fact that his confidence is not actually all that genuine is shown in two instances. You can see that in the Cannibalism Arc, when Fukuzawa was infected. He would not leave his side, and here he let his mask fall a little, not too much however. The other instance, and this one is a lot clearer than the first, is in Anne’s room. I cannot exactly recall the chapter, so I will edit this when I find what I mean, but in that specific chapter, in a certain panel, you can see hesitance all over Ranpo’s fear, which is expected of someone in that situation but not Ranpo.

Another thing I have to say regarding this point is that he believes that he is less worthy than his co-workers and less important than others because he has no ability, because he is normal. The sort of miserable thing about this is that he knows that he’s normal. He is entirely aware of it. Even when Yosano tried to tell him about it, he brushed her off. It’s obvious that it’s something that he’s insecure about.

The last thing I would like to shed light on here is that he is not what he seems. All of the Bungo Stray Dogs characters are like that, they all have a deeper meaning, I suppose you could say, to them. For Ranpo, this is presented through the fact that he has insecurities and yet is seemingly overly confident and in the fact that although he seems to not care about most others, he actually does, but in his own, unique way. The latter was also shown in the manga and in the Cannibalism Arc of season three of the anime.

Connections between the author and the character

Personally, this is my favourite part of any analysis, even though I simply adore discussing morality, because it gives me the chance to explore the similarities between a fictional re-creation of authors, incredible authors even, and the actual people themselves. Because this is the only way that I think I will be able to do this properly, I shall list the things in common or the things that are totally different between the character and the actual man:

1. Contrary to his character, in his essay ‘Confessions of Rampo’, he admitted that he does not like talking all too much about himself.

2. Opposite to their relationship in the show, it was Rampo who admired Poe’s works. In BSD, it’s Poe who’s admiring Ranpo’s deductive skills.

3. Much like the character, the author did not like the company of others much, even though the reasons for the character and the author differ.

4. A little unlike his character, with the exception of Poe’s works of course, Rampo loved the printed word and reading ever since he was a little boy.

Conclusion

All in all, Ranpo is quite an interesting character with a fair share of complexity and humanity, much like all of the Bungou Stray Dogs characters. He is a personal favourite of mine, and a character that I relate to on levels I was unaware one could relate to in a mere fictional character.
