Words: 812
Pairing: Jack Thompson x Reader
A/N: I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MAN OMG!
Request: Hey! Can I send in a request? Maybe Jack Thompson or Captain Kirk with the prompt "Of course we're best friends. No one else would put up with our shenanigans."? No worries if you're not feeling it! Hope you're doing wonderful! - @captainsophiestark

“Remind me why we’re here again?” Jack’s voice came from beside you.
“To work?” you replied as you shifted in the car seat.
“This is the most boring stakeout I’ve ever been on.”
“Are you calling me boring?” you joked, turning towards him.
“The company isn’t boring but the stakeout is.” he re-phrased “Happy now?”
“You know me. Of course I am.” you fixed your eyes back on the building in front of you “How about we just go inside?”
“Y/N, no.”
“Why? We’re clearly getting so much information from here.” you said sarcastically.
“And how would we go inside? What would we even do?”
“We could pretend to be looking for directions. Look.” you pulled out a map from the glove compartment “We can just say we’re looking for somewhere random on the map and hope they give us directions.”
“You forget they’ve seen me before.”
“Just shove some sunglasses on and take off your jacket. Perfect disguise.”
The man rolled his eyes “How the hell are we best friends?”
“No one else would put up with our shenanigans so we have each other.”
“Our shenanigans huh? Please as if I contribute-”
“Remember when it was your idea to prank the whole office with the out of date milk-”
“Alright, alright.” he tried to shush you with a smile on his face “but you agreed to help me.” he pointed his finger at you playfully.
“That’s what I mean, our shenanigans. We couldn’t really do it without each other.”
“How did we even end up friends in the first place?” he questioned how it all started but soon remembered. “That’s right, you hated me.”
“No, I’m pretty sure that you hated me. You couldn’t stand to be in the same room as me. Saw me as dirt, the same way you first reacted to Peggy.”
“I’ve never seen you as dirt. It just took me way longer than it should have to realise that women can work just as well, or even better than men in this sort of work.”
“Thanks Jack, you’re a real charmer there.”
“At least I’m admitting I was wrong.” he nudged you slightly “That’s a big one for me.”
“I suppose.” you laughed remembering the early days “then we worked together a bunch and practically became inseparable.”
“I wouldn’t change it for the world. I think you’re probably one of the best colleagues I’ve worked with.”
“Alright, no need to go that far Chief Thompson. That’d be favoritism in the workplace.”
“I think they already know we're friends Y/N.God some of them even think we’re something more.”
You genuinely laughed “I knew it was only a matter of time. Hey why can’t a man and woman be friends without people assuming they’re dating each other? If it were two men or two women they wouldn’t bat an eyelid.”
“I suppose it’s because they can’t see themselves being friends with the opposite sex without anything else happening.”
“Gross.” you huffed.
There was a silence as the two of you watched the building but Jack was the first to break it. “How about we grab dinner?”
“Are you asking me on a date!”
“Y/N, god no. I’m just hungry alright? Would it even be that bad if I did?”
“Did you not just hear our last conversation?”
“I did alright. I like you Y/N but we’re friends.” he was panicking, he did like you slightly more than a friend sometimes but to him your friendship was more important and he’d never want to do anything to jeopardize it.
“Best friends I think you’d find.” you smiled at the man sincerely, you liked the man, of course you how could you not? There had been nights the two of you had been in the office late and you’d fallen asleep and he’d tucked you up. He’d saved your life on multiple occasions and you’d saved his. He’d also been very protective of you when other men had made seedy moves on you. Honestly, you’d love to be in a relationship with him and it was probably the reason none of your relationships had worked out so far.
“We can go for food, or a date or whatever if we get this stakeout over and done with sooner rather than later.” you offered.
His heart bounced out of his chest. What did you just say? “How about we just go inside then? Get this over with?”
“I love the change of heart.” you passed the man his sunglasses and gave him a tap on the shoulder before getting out of the car.
He scrambled out and flung his jacket from his body frantically before popping the glasses on and linking his arm with yours. “Let's go ask for directions darling.”
You laughed, you had to admit you did love undercover work with him “Sure thing.”

Written for Fictober 2023!
Fandom: Marvel
Day 14 Prompt: "If you don't stop now-"
Summary: When Y/N is the first female agent allowed to work the night shift, side by side with Jack Thompson, Peggy and Daniel want to make sure she doesn't miss the hint.
Word Count: 1,108
Category: Fluff, Humor
Requested by @bandshirts-andbooks! This was so fun to write Babs lol, hope you enjoy!
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Ehem."
I scribbled away at the report I was working on, completely ignoring the pointed throat-clearing from my friends on the other side of the desk. The workday was almost over, so if I could just block them out for a little longer-
"If you want to pretend to ignore us, that's fine," said Peggy, her voice light and teasing. I fought back a sigh. "Daniel and I can just have the conversation with ourselves. We know you can hear us."
I made a face, glancing up long enough to make eye contact with both of my friends before slowly and deliberately raising my hands to my ears and plugging them. Since I'd already decided to be this childish, I figured I'd go all out, so I stuck out my tongue too.
Peggy and Daniel shared a look, and then Daniel reached up and grabbed my wrist, pulling one hand away. I glared at him, ready to yank my hand back and continue ignoring them both, but he spoke lowly before I could.
"You know, if you plug your ears, we'll just have to raise our voices so you can hear us."
I narrowed my eyes at him, wordlessly threatening murder, but Daniel didn't blink as he stared back. Finally, after a minute, I sighed.
"Fine. I won't plug my ears. But it's basically five, so maybe you two should just head out. You know, get a jump start on the weekend-"
"And leave you alone with Thompson sooner?"
I turned to glare at Daniel. Like before, he didn't flinch.
"Y/N, listen," started Peggy, leaning forward and looking at me like she was being the reasonable one. "Everyone in this conversation is aware that you have feelings for Thompson. All we're trying to get you to hear is that, since Thompson actually agreed to let you work the night shift with him, making you the first female agent to work a night shift... he might return those feelings."
I sighed, long and hard, through my nose. I put up with so much from these two.
"Great. I've heard you. Now mind your own business, both of you."
"We've long ago made this our business," Peggy responded, an all too pleased smile on her face.
"Yeah, come on," continued Daniel. "I have no idea what you see in Jack, but you clearly like him a lot. And you didn't let up when you saw me and Peggy dancing around each other. So we're not letting this go, either. Not when you spend every minute he's in the room moon-eyed staring at him-"
"Daniel, if you don't stop now-"
"What's going on over here?"
Peggy, Daniel, and I all whirled around at the sound of Jack's voice next to my desk, like kids caught digging in the cookie jar.
"Nothing!" I answered quickly, before whirling back around and glaring at my two friends. "Daniel and Peggy were just saying goodbye before they left for the night."
"Well, then, goodbye. Now get out of here, you two are off the clock and I'm not paying you overtime."
Peggy and Daniel shared a loaded look that I didn't miss, and that I also doubted Jack missed. I rolled my eyes, then the three of us stood.
"You don't have to tell us twice to get us out of here," said Daniel, stretching a little as he got to his feet.
"I sure did," I muttered. He ignored me.
"You two have fun tonight," said Peggy, giving us a pointed smile as she turned away. I narrowed my eyes at her and Daniel as they linked arms and started heading for the doors of the agency together. They didn't look back once, the bastards.
"So... what was all that about?" asked Jack, turning to me the second our friends had cleared the agency doors. I huffed a laugh and turned to face him with a small smile.
"They're still trying to play matchmaker."
"They make any good points?"
I grinned. "Well, they did point out that you must like me if you let me stay to work the late shift with you. They really might be onto something there."
Jack scoffed. "For two of my best detectives they're sure oblivious sometimes."
"I'll say."
Jack and I shared a smile, and then he slowly leaned in until we were almost nose to nose, our breath mingling. His smile widened as his hand moved up to cup my face, and then he closed the rest of the distance and kissed me.
Jack and I had been together for a few months now. It had all started as we worked towards our mutual goal of setting Peggy and Daniel up, mostly so we wouldn't have to watch them exchange longing glances every day at work. In the process, he'd stopping being a dick to me, and I'd realized I actually really liked him. The rest was history.
To be fair to Peggy and Daniel's skills as agents, Jack and I had intentionally been keeping our relationship a secret from the beginning. It wasn't all that high-stakes, but we'd wanted to enjoy the beginning of our relationship without everyone in the office chiming in about it, to our faces or otherwise. We still hadn't told anybody, but our interactions had changed enough for Peggy and Daniel to pick up on the energy. They'd been hounding us both for three weeks to try to set us up, and for our part, Jack and I had just laughed when they weren't looking.
After a few long moments, Jack pulled back, both of us still with grins on our faces.
"So... we gonna tell them?"
I hummed in thought, hopping up to sit on my desk, swinging my legs a little as I fixed Jack with a mischevious smile.
"We probably should. It's gone on long enough that they should probably know."
"...But?"
"But there's still a lot of fun to be had in how we tell them. And, unless some emergency comes in that we have to deal with tonight... we've got plenty of time to figure out the best way we can think of."
"Have I mentioned lately that I love you?" he asked, leaning down to kiss my temple before taking a half step back towards his office. "Because I do."
"I love you too. Now come on, go get a notepad from your office so we can brainstorm ways to mess with our friends."
"Honey, you don't have to tell me twice."
I grinned after the swaggering form of my boyfriend, my heart singing. I really did love him. And this was gonna be fun.

Necessary Evils (Tales From The SSR)
Tumblr media
Summary: As they await news of Michael Carter's surgery, (Y/N) and Jack discuss her unwanted connection to Arnim Zola and the feel of foreboding that the former Hydra doctor left in his wake.
Pairing: Jack Thompson X Fem!Reader, Peggy Carter X Daniel Sousa, Edwin Jarvis X Ana Jarvis
Word Count: 2.7k
Warnings/Disclaimers: None
A/N: Hi there! This week's surprise one-shot is gonna explore a little of Specs' whereabouts in the aftermath of Bucky Barnes' death in The First Avenger and we're gonna have some great moments between her and Jack, so buckle up! Thank you for reading, I hope you all enjoy!
Necessary Evils January 1948 Los Angeles County Hospital, Los Angeles (Previous One-Shot)
“I got you some tea from the hospital’s cafeteria.” (Y/N) was pulled out of her silent reverie by Jack taking a seat beside her and offering her a disposable paper cup, the concerned gleam in her boyfriend’s blue eyes accompanied by the smallest of smiles for her benefit. “Earl Grey and two teaspoons of honey; I know how much it helps when you get one of your stress headaches.”
(Y/N), touched by his thoughtful gesture, reached over and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, sweetheart.” She reached for the cup and after taking a long sip, she sat back in the uncomfortable waiting room chair with a frustrated sigh. “I hate this. The longer the surgery takes, the more I’d like to burst into that operating room and re-arrest that Nazi bastard before he tries anything funny with Michael.”
Beside her, Jack nodded as he patiently listened to her threats and threw Peggy – who was anxiously pacing across the hospital waiting room while Daniel unsuccessfully attempted to talk her into sitting down – a furtive glance before replying, “I don’t think this Zola guy would risk a lifetime imprisonment or execution by trying to bump off Carter mid-surgery, Specs. I mean, Stark and half a dozen MP’s are watchin’ him and the neurosurgeons like hawks as we speak, and he’s not gonna jeopardize the sweet deal the JIOA cut for him for something as low-stakes as this.”
“I wouldn’t call any of this ‘low-stakes,’ Flyboy,” (Y/N) murmured, looking around the fully-occupied waiting room and reflexively tightening her grip on her cup of tea; she, Jack, Peggy, Daniel, and the Jarvises, along with over a dozen uniformed SOE officers and SSR officials, were gathered at Los Angeles County Hospital for the long-awaited surgery that would theoretically restore Michael Carter’s mind to what it was before the brainwashing that Hydra subjected him to during the war. Several of the SOE officers served alongside Michael and had volunteered to travel from England to be with their fellow soldier in his time of need, but Peggy was understandably the most concerned of them all; Michael made his younger sister promise not to contact their parents about his staged death in 1941 and sudden reappearance until it was confirmed that the dangerous surgery was a success, wanting to prevent Harrison and Amanda Carter another heartbreak on the off-chance that Arnim Zola and the team of neurosurgeons failed and he passed away on the operating table. The Carter siblings spent several minutes alone with one another before they wheeled Michael into the operating room and since then, Peggy hadn’t been able to stay still. I’d be the same way if Freddie’s life were in the hands of that Nazi son of a bitch, (Y/N) thought to herself and one of her hands moved upwards to caress the locket containing her deceased brother’s photograph as she sympathetically watched Peggy continue to pace.
“You know what I mean.” Jack scooted closer to her side and when she finally looked over at him, the look of concern in his blue eyes was as prominent as ever. “Look, I get why Peggy’s taking all this personally…but I can’t figure why you are, too. You can talk to me, baby…” His hand moved to rest on her shoulder, and (Y/N) could feel the comforting warmth of his touch through the thin material of her blouse. “Whatever you’ve gotta say, I’m here. And if you don’t feel up to talkin’ just yet, then I’ll still be right here with you.”
(Y/N) lowered her gaze to her lap and spent several moments mustering the strength to speak, her voice wavering as she recalled some of the darkest moments of the war, the ones that she wished she could forget forever but sadly never could. “I helped capture Zola. I was deployed with the Howlies in the Swiss Alps, and we were tasked with finding and capturing Zola to interrogate him about Schmidt’s plans. Morita intercepted several radio transmissions from Hydra and after I decoded them, we had confirmation that Zola was on a train scheduled to travel through the same mountain pass that we were navigating. Steve, Bucky, Gabe and I used a zip chord to get onto the train while it was still in motion; Steve and Bucky left to secure the front train cars while Gabe and I stayed on the roof as their back-up, and that’s…that’s when…”
Her boyfriend rested his elbows on his knees and clasped his hands together as he looked over at her. “That was the mission that Sergeant Barnes didn’t survive, wasn’t it?” She nodded, her eyes still diligently trained on the dark blue material of her trousers, but she could feel his compassionate gaze on her as he continued. “Barnes died a hero to his country. The bastard turned against Schmidt to save his own skin, and Cap and the SSR were able to end Hydra and the war. That’s gotta bring you and the rest of the Howling Commandos some satisfaction, right?”
“It did…” (Y/N) admitted, but she tightly pursed her lips as she recalled the aftermath of the fateful mission to capture Zola alive. “Right up until his interrogation, that is.”
The tunnels below the London headquarters of the Strategic Scientific Reserve echoed with the sound of (Y/N)’s standard-issue heels making contact with the stone floor as she approached one of many interrogation cells; her fingers tightly clutched the classified file in her hands in an effort to contain her swirling emotions but judging by the apprehensive expressions on the stationed MP’s faces whenever she passed by, she was doing a poor job of masking her true feelings.
“As requested, a copy of my mission report to D.C.,” (Y/N) announced as she came to a stop before Colonel Phillips, and she arched a brow at the tray of food he was holding. “Hungry?”
“Zola surrendered and didn’t try to do himself in with cyanide, so I figured that the usual interrogation techniques might not work on this wack-job. He should count himself lucky; I’ve got over a dozen SSR agents chomping at the bit to finally get their hands on a live Hydra operative.”
Just as Colonel Phillips balanced the tray on one hand to reach for the file, (Y/N) tightened her grip on it and blurted out, “Colonel, I need to go in there with you.”
“Agent (Y/L/N), you and the rest of the 107th tactical team have my condolences for Sergeant Barnes’ death, but I can’t allow you any access to-”
“Respectfully, Colonel, you’re the commanding officer of the Strategic Scientific Reserve; you can directly authorize an agent access to as many high-security prisoners as you deem necessary, correct? I’m only requesting access to one.”
“You don’t get to tell me how to do my job, Agent.” The sharp tone in the older man’s voice conflicted with the uncharacteristic compassion emanating from his dark brown gaze. “I’ll authorize you access to the observation room, but that’s it.”
(Y/N)’s jaw clenched as she forced herself to remain composed, but there was nothing she could do to keep her voice from trembling with barely-restrained grief. “Colonel, the man on the other side of that door is the reason my friend and God knows how many Allied soldiers are dead. I…I need to do all I can to ensure that he gives us all the intel we need to take Hydra down. I need to help end this war once and for all.”
In contrast with the strained working relationships he shared with Peggy and Howard, Colonel Chester Phillips seemed to have a soft spot for (Y/N) since the moment she was loaned out to the SSR from the OSS; Peggy often speculated that it was because she reminded him of his granddaughter back home and although she’d never admit it aloud, (Y/N) considered him to be the father-figure she’d always longed for. They got along with one another but more importantly, they shared a mutual respect and it was that respect that seemingly compelled the older man into finally giving her a relenting nod. With a brief command from Colonel Phillips, the MP stationed nearby opened the door and after taking a deep breath, (Y/N) followed the colonel into the interrogation cell.
A dim light from an overhead fixture illuminated the sparsely decorated cell, and the Swiss doctor whirled around to face them both as they sat down at the interrogation table; a surge of pleasure rippled through (Y/N) when she observed his colorless face and the way his hands anxiously fiddled with the sleeves of his prisoner’s uniform, and she maintained eye-contact with him as she crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in her seat. Colonel Phillips set the tray of food down onto the table and spun it around before gesturing towards the unoccupied chair across from them. “Sit down.”
With obvious trepidation, Zola followed his order and sat, his brow arching as he looked down at the steak, potatoes, broccoli and glass of milk laid out before him. “What is this?”
“Steak.”
“What is in it?”
“Cow!” Colonel Phillips looked incredulously between (Y/N) and Zola. “Doctor, do you realize how difficult it is to get ahold of a prime cut like that out here?”
The Swiss doctor shrugged. “I don’t eat meat.”
“Why not?”
Taken aback by (Y/N)’s pointed question, Zola fidgeted in his seat and replied, “It disagrees with me.”
“How about cyanide? Does that give you the rumbly tummy, too?”
While Zola’s brow furrowed in confusion, Colonel Phillips spun the tray back around and used the utensils to begin cutting into the steak as (Y/N) continued. “Every Hydra agent that we’ve tried to take alive has crunched a little pill before we can stop him, but not you.”
The colonel hummed in agreement as he feasted on the tray of food, raising his fork in the air and glancing over at (Y/N) with a look of exaggerated curiosity on his wrinkled face. “Here’s my brilliant theory, Agent (Y/L/N): he wants to live.”
“You’re trying to intimidate me, Colonel.” Zola’s beady eyes flicked between them as a sheen of sweat slowly covered his balding head, obviously growing anxious under the strain of his imprisonment and their unconventional interrogation.
Colonel Phillips scoffed. “We bought you dinner. Why don’t we cut to the chase and show Doctor Zola here what’s in that file?”
While the colonel cut the steamed potatoes into quarters, (Y/N) withdrew a single piece of paper from the file and slid it across the table, her red-lacquered nails drumming on the tabletop as she watched the Swiss doctor read the typed mission report aloud. “‘…and in exchange for his full cooperation, Doctor Zola is being remanded to Switzerland…’”
“I sent that message to Washington this morning. Of course, it was encoded.” (Y/N) leaned forward, resting her elbows on the tabletop, and fixed Zola with an unwavering stare. “You guys haven’t broken those codes, have you? That would be awkward.”
Zola’s expression remained neutral, but the lines between his brows were visibly deeper and she could practically see the wheels turning inside his head while he carefully considered his predicament. “Schmidt will know this is a lie.”
“He’s going to kill you anyway, doc.” Colonel Phillips punctuated his blunt reply with a shrug. “You’re a liability. You know more about Schmidt than anyone and the last guy you cost us was Captain Rogers’ closest friend, so I wouldn’t count on the very best of protection.” The sound of Bucky’s scream as he fell from the train and into the deep chasm below played on a loop in (Y/N)’s mind, forcing her to dig her nails into the skin of her palms to keep from reacting, an action she was no stranger to as a woman serving in a secretive branch of the Allied armed forces but one that she hated having to perform in the wake of her friend’s death. “It’s you or Schmidt; it’s just the hand you’ve been dealt.”
The Swiss doctor, taking note of the colonel’s grim tone and the obvious tension in (Y/N)’s shoulders, huffed out a humorless chuckle before nodding once and stating, “Schmidt believes he walks in the footsteps of the gods. Only the world itself will satisfy him.”
“You do realize that’s nuts, don’t you?”
Shaking his head, Zola huffed out a humorless chuckle at the colonel’s comment. “The sanity of the plan is of no consequence.”
“And why’s that?”
“Because he can do it!”
(Y/N), losing patience with Zola and his feeble attempts at providing them with answers, snapped out, “What’s his target?”
When Zola’s beady eyes focused on hers, a shiver of foreboding traveled up (Y/N)’s spine and it took every ounce of willpower she possessed not to look away as he simply replied, “His target…is everywhere.”
“He told us everything we needed to know; the exact coordinates of Schmidt’s secret base in the Alps, a detailed run-down of Schmidt’s plan to bomb over half a dozen of the world’s largest cities, how much time we had before Hydra’s scheduled attack on New York…and within twenty-four hours, Schmidt was dead and Hydra was finally defeated.” (Y/N)’s fingers were wrapped tightly around her now-empty cup and she was leaning against Jack’s side, taking comfort in her boyfriend’s sturdy form as she spoke in the lowest tone she could and kept a wary eye on Peggy across the waiting room. “But there was something about his eyes, like he knew some big secret that the colonel and I could never understand, and I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something we missed.” Swallowing thickly, she finally looked over at Jack and met his empathetic gaze. “That’s crazy, right?”
Jack shook his head. “Definitely not. Listen, Specs, we might’ve both served on opposite ends of the world, but all the horrible shit we saw and lived through during the war? It hasn’t broken us. We’re still here, and our experiences matter because they’re what shaped us into the people we are today: people who dedicated their lives to making this screwed-up world a better place.” The corner of his lip curved into a small smile as he affectionately bumped the side of her head with his own. “You were the one who taught me that.”
Looking into his clear blue eyes, (Y/N) felt the stiffness in her shoulders begin to melt away and she couldn’t fight the smile that slowly made its way onto her face. “I’m a pretty good teacher, aren’t I?”
“Oh, hands-down, the smartest and most gorgeous teacher I’ve ever had.” Her boyfriend’s flirtatious wink forced (Y/N) to mask her giggle with a cough and flash several of the waiting room’s occupants an apologetic look while he quietly continued. “If you think that Zola’s up to no good, then I believe you. There’s no easy way to handle a situation as delicate as Operation Paperclip; all we can do is our best and in this case, the best that we can do is to keep a close eye on him and every other scumbag Nazi scientist that they’ve recruited. How’s that sound, Specs?”
She took a deep breath and gave him a firm nod. “Like a pretty solid game plan, Flyboy.”
Before either of them could say another word, the double doors leading into the hospital’s operating room swung open and Howard strode into the waiting room, a grin on his face as he made a bee-line over to where Peggy stood. “Michael’s been wheeled into a recovery room and all preliminary signs are pointin’ to a successful operation. Your brother’s gonna be just fine, Peg.”
The younger woman’s anxious expression was overtaken by a look of overwhelming relief and she didn’t hesitate to throw her arms around the inventor in a tight hug. The rest of the waiting room collectively released the grateful breath that they’d been holding for hours and while the SOE officers and SSR officials talked amongst themselves, Jack wrapped an arm around (Y/N)’s shoulders and pressed a chaste kiss onto her temple; she closed her eyes and as she took comfort in her boyfriend’s supportive touch, she spoke a silent word of thanks to the universe for Michael’s successful surgery and for sending her a supportive and understanding partner in the form of Jack Grant Thompson.

Firehouse Harrington - Chapter 6
fireman!Steve x f!reader/f!oc
series masterlist
It's Thanksgiving and Steve is trying to be better for his girl (what's new?) but he's going to be tested when someone from his past comes to visit.
warnings | 18+ SMUT, actually pretty sweet sex but also some nasty stuff too bc... it's steve, angst, EMOTIONS everywhere, my lord
a/n | um, this one is long, babes. but it's also very sweet, at least for steve. enjoy :)
It’s Thanksgiving day, and Steve’s at the station, and in the doghouse. He was supposed to be spending today with his girl, but when he got back to work on Monday and the chief was asking who could pick up Thanksgiving, Steve had volunteered himself like he always did, not even thinking about how this year he actually had someone he could spend the day with. When he called her that night and admitted what he had done, the disappointment in the sigh she let out went right down his spine. Since last week, Steve had been trying to be on his best behavior. It had scared him, watching her get ready to walk out the door and never come back, mostly because he hadn’t realized just how much it’d destroy him if she actually did it. He knew it was inevitable, she’d find something better, if not someone better, and she would leave. But Steve wanted to hang onto her as long as he could, keep chasing that ray of sun until he was left back in the shade. However, it was seeming that no matter how hard he tried, he just kept fucking up.
“Well, okay, Steve. I guess we could do it on Saturday instead? Why don’t we invite Robin to join us too? She told me she’d be back in town after Friday.” Steve had tried not to groan at that. He really didn’t like that she and Robin seemed to have become fast friends. His jaw had all but dropped on the floor when she had jokingly called him “king Steve” one day, telling him with a laugh that Robin had shared a few memories with her. But, he was trying to be better, and being better meant agreeing to having Robin over for their makeshift Thanksgiving.
The actual holiday was always a bit of a clusterfuck for the station. Idiots trying to deep fry their birds seven different ways, grandmas setting off smoke alarms with cigars from the “old country,” and for some reason, hoosiers had a particular affinity for setting off fireworks after they were good and stuffed with butter and carbs. They had several calls throughout the day, but by the time seven o’clock rolled around, the city of Indianapolis seemed to be good and sedated by turkey, and Steve and the other men working that day were finally pulling back into the station for hopefully the last time that night. What he wasn’t expecting, however, was to see someone sitting on the stoop outside the door to the station. As they’re stepping down from the truck, the person rounds the corner of the garage and Steve’s heart kicks in his chest when he sees that it’s his girl, all bundled up in the frigid night and carrying two large bags that Steve recognizes from the burger joint down the block. He’s left speechless as she toes her way into the garage, a small smile on her face as she tilts her head at him, lifting up the bags.
“It’s not exactly turkey, but I figure it’ll do under the circumstances.” The other two men Steve’s working with tonight are young rookies, all the older men having family to be at home with, and they're watching her like she’s a damn angel descending from heaven. Steve finally cracks into action, a grin splitting his face as he takes one of the bags from her and wraps an arm around her waist.
“Miller, Thompson, this is my girl.”
Luckily, because they are rookies, the two other men have yet to get steeped in the misogyny that runs rampant in the station, and are nothing but polite to her as they welcome her in and help her lay out food on the kitchen counter. Steve would normally hate the idea of her coming around here, but with the rest of the crew gone, and after another stupidly tedious holiday shift, all he can do is smile like a dope as she feeds him a french fry. His two coworkers thank her profusely, loading their arms up with food and heading to their bunks to give the couple “some alone time.” Steve barely nods at their words, too focused on her leaning back against the counter and sipping a milkshake. Once the two men are gone, Steve finally clears his throat.
“Um– I wasn’t– you” She just laughs, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Just eat your burger, Harrington. You can thank me later.”
They sit on the grubby sofa in the station, eating and talking quietly. Steve tells her about the man who had tried to build his own deep fryer and ended up setting off a small explosion in his backyard that sent his turkey flying through an upstairs window of the house next door. Her laugh is contagious and they both end up gasping for breath at the ridiculousness of the story. Steve can’t remember the last time he laughed so hard.
Food wrappers abandoned, they both slump back into the couch, heads tilted lazily to look at each other. He brings his palm down to stroke up and down her thigh, letting out a sigh.
“Thank you. For this. You didn’t have–” She cuts him off, scooting closer and resting her hand on his chest.
“Steve, I wanted to. And you’re very welcome.” For once, he drops it, simply smiling and dipping forward to drop a quick kiss to her lips before pulling back.
“Did you, uh, talk to your folks today?” She nods. She had explained to him that her family lived across the country on the west coast and while she was still on talking terms with them, she avoided going home as much as possible. Steve could certainly understand that.
“Yeah, I did. I told them about you.” His heart jolts up into his throat at her words, eyebrows raising. He squeezes her thigh.
“You did?” She smiles, nodding again.
“Mmhmm. My sister thinks it’s hot that you’re a fireman.” He sputters out a laugh, shaking his head, but she seems to have something else in mind, carding her fingers through his hair to get him to look at her.
“I’m inclined to agree with her.” With that, she’s shifting on the couch to swing her leg over his hip, straddling his thighs and wrapping her arms around his neck. Steve’s hands instinctively go to the plush of her thighs, fingers flexing. She’s already nosing along his neck, making Steve shiver, but he collects himself enough to speak, making her still in his lap.
“Hey, hey. We can’t, baby. Not here with those guys just a wall away.” She whines into his neck.
“Steve–”
“No. I’m serious, doll, you better watch it.” She huffs, and when she finally pulls back from his neck, she gives him an actual pout that he can’t help but surge forward to kiss away. But when he pulls back, there’s a new glint in her eyes. She leans forward, grazing her lips along his ear before whispering.
“What if we took this somewhere else, Stevie?” He both hates and loves it when she calls him that and it makes him groan.
“You know I can’t leave the station, baby.” She grins.
“Who said anything about leaving the station?”
That’s how Steve finds himself in the jumpseat of one of the firetrucks with her in his lap, gasping between sloppy kisses as he squeezes her ass to grind her down against him. He pulls back with a lewd pop, looking into her wild eyes.
“You know, doll, I didn’t get any dessert.” She doesn’t seem to follow where he’s going with this, scoffing and rolling her eyes.
“Are you serious right now? Steve, you had a milkshake, was that not sweet enough for–” She’s cut off when he lands a harsh smack to her ass, making her gasp and lurch forward into his chest.
“Watch that tone, pretty. And what I want a taste of is a lot sweeter than any milkshake.” His other hand digs into the front of her jeans, cupping her wet heat and she seems to get it now, whimpering out a soft “oh” at his harsh touch. He strokes through her folds, dipping his fingers into her entrance and dragging the wetness pooling there up to her clit as she grinds down into his palm. He presses a kiss to her temple before dragging his lips along her cheek to speak into her ear.
“Stand up, baby. We’re gonna switch spots and then daddy’s gonna have his dessert.” He helps her up, not missing how shaky she seems to be on her legs, before helping her peel off her jeans and panties as she sits back in the car seat. Steve kneels between her legs, pressing a kiss to the inside of each of her knees before drawing them over his shoulders and dragging her ass to the edge of the seat. It’s cramped, there’s no two ways about it, her feet pressing into the wall of the cab behind him and her hands trying to find purchase on the roof of the truck as he starts to work her over. She’s a writhing mess as he licks long, lazy strokes through her folds, sighing and huffing above him. He leans back just to spit on her cunt, watching the way it drips down to mix with her own wetness. She whimpers under his hard gaze.
“Daddy, please don’t tease me– need it bad.” He chuckles before landing a slap to the inside of her thigh, causing her to yelp.
“Don’t be pushy, doll. Daddy’s gonna take all the time he wants. Because this pretty little pussy is all mine, yeah?” She nods, letting out a breathy “mmhmm” when he kisses her clit.
“And I can do whatever I want with it, right, baby?” She nods again, but he wants more from her and lays a quick smack against her clit that makes her hips buck in his hold. It’s a whine when she speaks.
“Yes, daddy. S’all yours– you can do whatever you want– just, please–” He shushes her.
“S’okay, pretty. I’ve got you. So fucking sweet. Daddy’s gonna take care of you.” His last words come out a murmur as he dips back into her cunt, licking into her before sweeping up to her clit and sucking hard around the little bud. The moan she lets out makes his brain go hazy with her as she drags her fingers through his hair, pulling lightly at the roots as he continues to lick at her clit. She starts to grind her hips against his mouth and Steve groans.
“That’s it, doll. Take what you want. Fuck, you taste so good.” She preens at his words, arching out of the car seat as he slips two fingers into her.
“Feels so good, daddy– p-please don’t stop.” He can feel her already tightening up on his fingers as he pumps them into her.
“You close, baby? You gonna come on daddy’s fingers?” She nods frantically, her eyes scrunched shut as she lets out a high-pitched “mmhmm.”
“I want your eyes on me when you come. Open those pretty eyes for me, doll.” When she doesn’t listen, he slips his other hand up her front to harshly grip her jaw, making her eyes shoot open as she gasps at the pain.
“That’s it, pretty. Eyes on me.” He dips back down, sucking and nipping at her clit while he fucks her with his fingers. She comes with a broken sigh, hips jerking in his hold as she spasms around his fingers. Steve thinks he could die happy in this position, between the softness of her thighs with the pretty sounds of her breathy whimpers ringing in his ears. He finally pulls away, leaving a sloppy kiss to each of her thighs. As he wipes her slick from his chin with the back of his hand, he takes in the sight of her, flushed and slumped down in the seat. She quirks an eyebrow at him.
“Your sweet tooth satisfied now?” He grins palming his aching hardness as he looks her over.
“Way better than pumpkin pie.”
“Steve? Can you go pick up the pumpkin pie this morning? The bakery opens at ten but I need to get to work on all this cooking.” He cranes his neck from where he’s sitting on the couch, his heart squeezing at the sight of her in his kitchen. She’s the sweetest image in one of his sweatshirts, an apron tied around her hips hiding the fact that she’s also only wearing a pair of his boxers. But his attention is quickly pulled to the seeming bomb of ingredients that’s gone off across his countertops. He gets up, shuffling into the kitchen and watching her poring over a cookbook.
“Yeah, I’ll go, um– are you sure we need to make this much food? S’just you, me, and Robin.” She stills where she had been flipping through the book.
“Babe? It is just you, me, and Robin, right?” She finally looks at him, offering a very nervous little smile. Steve feels like he’s going to blow a gasket already but she’s quick to slide over to him in her socked feet, pressing her palms into his chest and rubbing lightly.
“Look, don’t freak out, ok? But Robin told me one of your other friends was in town this weekend and I may have told her to invite him.” Steve blinks hard a few times.
“You what?” She huffs.
“Steve, don’t get weird. He’s a friend of yours after all.”
“He? Who– who is he?” She furrows her brow.
“Crap, I can’t actually remember his name. Um, something Munyan– wait, no– uh, Munroe?” Steve’s jaw goes slack.
“Are you telling me Eddie Munson is coming to dinner?” Her face splits into a grin and she slaps his chest lightly.
“That’s it! Robin told me it’s been a while since he’s been back in Indiana so it’ll be nice for you all to catch up.” She’s smiling so brightly at him it’s hard to stay mad at her. Steve’s taken to counting to ten to keep himself from saying things he knows he shouldn’t. It works, sometimes. He finally huffs, scrunching his eyes shut before looking at her again and nodding.
“Alright, alright. I’ll um– I guess I’ll go get that pie.” She lands a quick kiss to his lips, grinning up at him again.
“Good. Be quick, yeah? You’re on turkey duty.”
The later in the day it gets, the tighter the knot in Steve’s stomach winds. He hasn’t seen Eddie in years, not since Steve went overseas. All he knew was that Eddie had moved down south, seeking the money that was to be made working the oil rigs in the gulf of Mexico. He never wrote, never called, and he figured that Eddie liked it that way, putting everything behind him and Steve couldn’t blame him for that.
The only thing keeping Steve sane is her, dancing around him in the kitchen, a swirl of chopping vegetables and filling up casserole dishes. He’s never cooked a turkey before, never any reason to, but he takes to the task diligently because he wants to impress her. The sun is just starting to set as he leans back against the counter, bird in the oven and dish towel over his shoulder. He swats her hands away as she goes to peek into the oven and she scoffs at him.
“S’almost done, baby, go get changed.” She smiles, looking down at her now smudged-up apron over her pantsless legs.
“Get changed? What’s wrong with this?” He slides over to her, grabbing her hips and squeezing as she laughs in his grip. He plants a few mushy kisses to her lips, murmuring about how she’s “such a menace” in between them until she finally pulls away to saunter into his bedroom with a huff. A sting runs through his chest as, for a moment, he can imagine them doing this for the rest of their lives, his mind wandering to the image of a baby on her hip as they shuffle around their kitchen. He has to scrub a harsh hand through his hair to clear the thought from his mind.
His brain is further scattered when the doorbell rings. Steve freezes, but luckily she’s just then coming back out of his bedroom wearing that dress he loves, fixing an earring as she marches over to the door.
Steve hears him before he sees him. First there’s the sound of her and Robin greeting each other. But Steve would recognize that raspy voice anywhere.
“Well, hello. You must be the catch Robs has been telling me about. Blink twice if Harrington’s holding you against your will.” Yep, that’s Munson alright.
Eddie comes flouncing into the kitchen, her and Robin following behind. Steve thinks that he looks about the same. His hair is a little shorter, but otherwise, he’s still got that shit-eating grin that Steve remembers. Eddie’s eyes crinkle when he sees Steve, already opening his arms up for a hug that Steve was not expecting.
“Long time no see, big boy, bring it in.”
They get all the food laid out on the dining table, everyone humming at how good everything looks and Steve feels a warm bloom of pride in his chest that he did this, with his girl, together. She squeezes his hand as they all sit down, offering him a smile and Steve thinks for a minute that it’ll be alright after all. And then Eddie opens his mouth.
“So Robin told me you’re, like, super smart. Is that why you’re with Steve? Are you running experiments on him?” Steve would like to drag him across the table and knock his lights out right then, but she takes it in stride, laughing politely.
“Oh, god, no. It’s, um, actually kinda funny how we met. Steve was on duty when there was a fire in my dorm and, uh, the rest is history I guess.” It’s a total lie, and Steve loves her for it as she glances at him out of the corner of her eye, a small reassurance.
The rest of the dinner goes off as smooth as it can. Eddie tells them about his time down in the gulf (“back-breaking stuff, man. I still get the heebies anytime I fill up my car”) and explains that he’s planning on coming back to Indiana for good, using the money he saved up to go back to school to become a teacher. Steve can’t help but snort at that and Eddie tilts his head at him.
“Something funny, Stevie?” Steve shrugs.
“Can’t imagine you being a teacher, Munson. I don’t remember you caring much for school.” Eddie chuckles, shaking his head.
“People change, Steve, you know that better than most. Besides, I’ll be teaching music, not boring bullshit.” Her eyes are darting between the men, Robin looking on a bit nervously as well. It’s meaningless jabs, but Eddie’s “you know better than most” has a weight to it that everyone seems to pick up on. She eventually clears her throat, squeezing Steve’s hand as she smiles at Eddie.
“Well, I think that’s great, Eddie. You know, there’s really interesting MRI research coming out about how good music is for our brains. They’re starting to use it as palliative treatment for people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.” It’s a successful maneuver away from whatever the elephant in the room is. Eddie rests his chin in his palm as he looks at her.
“I’ll be damned, is that right? Tell me more, sweetheart, that sounds wild.”
It’s over dessert that Eddie excuses himself for a smoke break. She and Robin are chatting easily over cups of coffee and slices of pie. Steve squeezes her shoulder, murmuring that he’s going to go keep Eddie company.
Steve gets outside just as Eddie’s lighting up, leaning up against the wall of his apartment building. He grins around his cigarette.
“You wanna bum one, Harrington? Or did you quit?” Steve waves him off, leaning on the wall next to him.
“Been trying to at least. She’ll kill me if she smells it on me.” Eddie laughs, whistling lowly.
“So you’re whipped, huh?” Steve scoffs, going to protest  but Eddie continues.
“It’s a good look on you, man. You seem– I don’t know– lighter.” Steve raises an eyebrow at him, but Eddie just shrugs.
“I’m just saying. You better hold onto that one. She’s the real deal.” Steve sighs.
“Yeah, I know, Ed.” There’s a beat of silence before Eddie speaks again.
“Robs told me you had another close call.” Steve huffs at that, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You’re getting older, Harrington. Don’t you think it’s time you–” Steve turns on him, his eyes flashing and Eddie puts up his hands in surrender.
“Did she put you up to this?” Eddie’s face scrunches in confusion.
“What? No, man. But I can’t blame her if she’s saying the same thing. Listen, Steve, I get it, really. Why do you think I went running down south to work my ass off on a fucking rig? It wasn’t exactly for the scenery.” Eddie sighs, blowing out a puff of smoke before going on.
“But, it’s just stupid. Trying to keep running, to keep fighting. You– we deserve to get on with life.  At least that’s what I figure.” Steve sighs, plucking the cigarette right from Eddie’s mouth and taking a long drag before handing it back to him. Eddie glances at him.
“What did you wanna do? Before?” Steve laughs, shaking his head.
“I didn’t have a fucking clue what I wanted to do. I was working shit jobs that went nowhere, even before.” Eddie offers him the cigarette again and Steve takes it with a muttered “don’t fucking tell her” that makes Eddie laugh.
“Well, listen, as your friend? I’m telling you that you deserve to figure out what the fuck you actually want to do, not what numbs your brain out enough to forget the past.” Steve just nods, stamping out the butt before glancing back at Eddie.
“So, you’re really back for good?” Eddie grins, nodding.
“Certified, man. I’m starting at IU after the holidays.” Steve chuckles.
“Eddie Munson, a college man. Who would’ve thought.”
“Hey, if I can do it, so can you, Harrington. Think about it.” They both sigh and Steve kicks off the wall.
“I will, really. C’mon, we should head back up. I fear what those two could accomplish left alone together.” Eddie chuckles, clapping Steve on the back.
“It’s good to be back, Steve. And it’s good to see you found someone. She’s a keeper, man.”
“I know, Ed. I know.”
She sends Robin and Eddie off with tin-foil wrapped plates stacked high with leftovers and Steve tries not to blow a fuse when Eddie lays a wet, smacking smooch to her cheek, grinning like the devil he is before slinking out the door. Robin huffs, smiling apologetically at her.
“Apologies for the large man-child, he means well. Thank you guys for Thanksgiving part two though, it was great!” Steve draws his friend into a brisk side hug before she’s out the door as well. His girl shuts the door, turning and looking at him with a broad smile.
“Well?” He raises his eyebrows at her as she pads over to him, drawing her palms up his chest to wrap behind his neck. She presses a soft kiss to his lips.
“Was it a good thanksgiving?” Steve huffs, wrapping his arms around her waist to pull her closer against him.
“Munson aside? First good one I ever had, doll.” That earns him a grin and she leans in for another kiss that he tries to deepen, chasing after her lips but to no avail.
“We make a good team, baby.” Steve hums at that, once again trying to steal another kiss but she slides her palms down to press into his chest again.
“Gotta clean up, team.” He groans, but reluctantly follows her back into the kitchen to tackle the mess of dishes that’s been left in the aftermath of dinner. It’s quiet and it’s easy as they work. She washes and he dries, and again Steve feels that sting in his chest imagining them doing this after putting their imaginary kids to bed. He knows it’s ridiculous to even think this way. She’s never even mentioned wanting or not wanting kids, and why would she? Still, part of him can’t help but hope that there’s even a small chance she’d want her future to have him in it. He’s brought out of his head by the sound of her humming as she scrubs another pan. He sets down his dishtowel, sliding behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist as he digs his nose into her neck, breathing her in. She huffs under his attention.
“We’re not done, Steve.” He groans, his voice coming out as a mumble into her skin.
“There’s only, like, two pans left, babe. I say we’re done for tonight.” She gives in, setting the pan she had been working on down in the sink and drying her hands off on a rag before letting her palms rest over his forearms circling her waist. Steve starts to press kisses up the sweep of her neck, his teeth grazing the hinge of her jaw as she shudders in his arms.
“Look so pretty, tonight, honey. Wearing my favorite dress.” She sighs, letting him sway them a little side to side as he continues to nip at her skin.
“Wore it for you. Was trying to distract you from being so pissed off at Eddie.” Steve huffs into her neck, drawing his hands down to palm the swell of her thighs.
“It worked. Think I would’ve throttled him if I didn’t have you next to me.” She sighs as his hands continue to run up and down the outside of her thighs, ghosting over her hips before dipping back down to thumb at the hem of her dress. She twists in his hold, threading her fingers through the back of his hair and looking up at him in a way that makes his hands shake. Her voice is just a whisper when she speaks.
“I love you, Steve.” He feels his face melt into a smile, pulling her closer by her waist.
“You do?” She grins, nodding, and they kiss around their shared dopey smiles. Steve pulls away, pressing his forehead against hers.
“Fuck, baby– I love you so much.” And with that he’s diving in for a deeper kiss that makes her gasp into his mouth as he licks into her. Without knowing it, he’s walking her back until she’s pressed into the counter, hoisting her up onto it and settling between her legs. Her fingers start to fumble with the buttons of his shirt and Steve’s quick to help her, pulling it up over his head and tossing it aside. Her palms smooth up his chest, and she hooks her legs behind his thighs to draw him in closer. He breaks away to lay kisses along her shoulder, reaching back to tug the zipper of her dress down until it’s loose enough for her to shrug out of the sleeves. Taking in the sight of her, Steve lets out a low groan.
“Baby, no bra?” She grins and shrugs.
“Doesn’t work with the dress, Stevie.” He huffs, not really answering as he’s already dipping down to lay harsh bites across the tops of her breasts. She gasps as he takes one of her nipples into his mouth, teeth grazing the bud until she’s tugging lightly at his hair to pull him back up for a kiss that’s all pressing tongues and harsh gasps. Her hands wander again, this time down to his belt but Steve’s quick to grab hold of both her wrists in one palm.
“Hey, hey. Lemme take care of you first, doll.” She sighs, her brow furrowing.
“Just want you, daddy. Wanna feel you.” Steve feels like his head is going to explode at her words and the way she’s looking up at him from under her eyelashes. He tries to steady himself, guiding her palms to rest on his bare chest.
“Just Steve tonight, alright, pretty? Want you to say my name while I fuck you.” She smiles at that, dragging her hands up to clasp behind his neck and pull him into another kiss, pulling away just so their lips are barely brushing and whispering “ok, Steve.” Something in him snaps at her sweet words and he grips the plush of her ass, murmuring for her to wrap her legs around him, and he hoists her up off the counter as they continue to smear sloppy kisses into each other’s skin.
He starts to pad out of the kitchen, but his foot gets caught on the rug in front of the sink and they both wind up on the floor. She’s dissolving into laughter underneath him as he presses up onto his hands to check that she’s not hurt. She’s not, but Steve’s ego might be. She catches the furrowed look on his face and sighs.
“Don’t pout, baby. You were just being efficient. Now we don’t have to go all the way to the bedroom.” He can’t help but laugh at that, shaking his head at her words.
“Always such a smart mouth.” She doesn’t get a reply in as he dips down to steal another sloppy kiss. Steve thinks fleetingly that they probably look like a mess. They’re sprawled out on his kitchen floor, her dress all rucked around her hips, his belt buckle hanging open. But he doesn’t care, not when she’s drawing his hips down into hers by hooking her leg around his ass. Steve smacks one more kiss to her lips before leaning back to drag her dress the rest of the way down her hips, his hands skating back up her legs to slide her panties off too. He sits back on his haunches, fumbling with his belt, taking in her splayed figure as she tilts her head and grins at him. His hands still.
“What’re you looking at, doll?”
“You, Steve. So lovely like this.” He huffs at her words, knowing that if he thinks too hard about them he’ll dissolve right on the spot. He quickly shrugs his pants and boxers down enough to slide his aching cock out, leaning back over her and running the tip through her folds. They both sigh at the contact, and she rucks one knee up to his hip, wrapping her arms around his shoulders as he dips into her. He stills for a moment, searching her face.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to work you open first, pretty?” She scrunches her face, tilting her hips to try to coax him deeper but he brings one palm down to the softness of her belly, pressing her into stillness.
“Hey. Need your words, doll. Be good for me, huh?” She frowns, brushing some of his hair out of his face.
“I just wanna feel you, Steve. Want you inside me.” He presses a kiss to her pouted lips, letting his hips roll forward with a deep groan. She arches up into him when his hips finally press against hers, offering up the arc of her throat for him to nose along as she sighs.
“Always so perfect for me, doll– fuck– tell me when I can move.” She tells him on a breathy exhale that she’s ready and he lets his lips smear over hers as he pulls out, slowly rolling into a rhythm that pushes and pulls both their bodies. It feels different, and not just because they’re splayed on his kitchen floor. Something heady is pulling at the hilt of his spine, pressing his thrusts deeper as she cants her hips to meet him. He’s devouring her, swallowing her gasps and whimpers as he licks into her mouth. It’s embarrassing how quickly the pleasure is closing in around him.
“Feels so good, Steve– so full– fuck, don’t stop.” She dissolves into a cracked chant of his name and Steve’s head is swimming in it.
He brings his hand up to her jaw, skating his thumb along her bottom lip. She’s quick to wrap her mouth around the digit, laving her tongue over the pad of his thumb and it makes Steve’s eyes roll back in his head. He takes his thumb from her mouth with a lewd pop, bringing his hand town to swipe over her clit. Her hips jerk in his hold and he feels her clench down hard around him.
“Fuck, baby– need you to come for me– need to feel it so bad.” She whimpers his name, eyes scrunching closed as her nails dig into his shoulder blades.
“Eyes on me, pretty. Wanna see you when you come– c’mon, baby.” Her eyes blow wide as she lets out a broken cry and the way she pulses around him as she comes undone sends Steve over the edge with her, pressing his hips deep into hers as he spills inside of her. They’re both panting, a slick sheen of sweat keeping them stuck together in their embrace. Steve dips his face into her neck, leaving light kisses as he trails up to her jaw, and then to her lips. When he pulls away she’s grinning beneath him.
“I love you, Steve. I really mean it.” For a moment, Steve stills, taking in the sight of his girl. His girl. He almost can’t believe it’s all real, but when she pulls him back down for another kiss, for once all the thoughts muddying his mind go quiet. He smiles against her lips.
“I love you too. Fuck, you’re incredible.” She hums, carding her fingers through his hair. As they stay there, sprawled on his kitchen floor, probably for longer than they should, Steve feels something spreading in his chest. A notion, a hope really, that for her, he might be able to be better. He really wants to be better.

Daniel Sousa x Reader
Fits my Time Traveler!Reader AU but works with any of you simps.
Tumblr media
Summary: First partners, second friends, and third lovers. When you joined the SSR, Chief handed you over the Sousa to keep you out of trouble. It was easier than expected, considering the only thing you needed to do was not leave him behind and treat him decently, you became a lovely pair of agents. Also, this is a fanfic, obviously we need to give him a lil’ smooch at some point.
Pairing: Daniel Sousa x Reader (Platonic to Crush)
A/N: LOVELY BOY, PRETTY BOY, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.
—————————————————
After quickly learning you’d never be a true field agent in the other’s eyes, you decided to focus on your new partner.
You spent way too much time in the filing rooms, considering the chief deemed you both his last choice.
Daniel taught you everything he knew about filing, and that was a lot. (His filing is impeccable.)
Both of you found ways to make it worth each others while, cracking jokes about cases, making fun of the other agents, other stuff and all.
It’s gotten to the point where you just sit there in the filing room and talk instead of actually resorting cases.
The only thing you had a problem with was having to endure what he had to deal with just by being there.
You had to watch other agents push him around and mash him like pudding, the ablism is just unbelievable in your eyes.
So you decided to crack back at them, it was getting annoying so-
“No one would trade a red white and blue shield for an aluminum crutch,”
“Oh yeah? Well, I would never trade him or his aluminum crutch for whatever empty thoughts bounce across your brain like ping pong balls.”
If Daniel isn’t in love with you since the day he saw you, definitely fell in love with you just then.
The mans flushin and blushin, “You wouldn’t trade him for anyone in this entire office?? 🥺🥺🥺”
One day you two were walking and talking around the office and you had left him behind to grab something and you came back to him spinning in circles like a lost puppy looking for you. Once he spotted you he pretty much beelined towards you and it was hilarious and adorable.
He looks at you with such admiration and he absolutely adores you.
…Daniel wasn’t really good at hiding it either, you noticed pretty early on
Problem, you didn’t know what it meant.
Every time you looked over at him he just seemed entirely enamored, did he like you? love you? what- what was going on?
And over time… you were enamored too,
You noticed how sweet and kind he was, an entire ray of sunshine just- following you around.
Unfortunately you two never got to talk about it.
When he got promoted, you were thrilled, so proud of your partner.
You supported him every step up until the plane trip to LA, since you were still assigned to NY.
It left you lonely, missing what seemed to be your only friend besides Peggy.
When Thompson sent you and Peggy to LA to help with Sousa’s case, you quickly packed your stuff and got on the plane
Making a Part 2 at some point so :)

Jack Thompson x Reader
Previous Chapters
What Lies Before US
Chapter 19
A/N: once again thank you @clinicallydepressedreader for the lovely reblog of the last chapter! I do appreciate every like/feedback a great deal.
The next morning, before the sun had made its way above the horizon, the two of them packed up their things in the office before making their way back to the bunker. It was still locked, so Jack entered the code to gain access.
“Seems like no one broke out”, he commented sarcastically.
They were greeted by silence as they made their way back towards the interrogation chamber. The first person they came across was Sousa, who looked like he hadn’t slept much.
“You look a bit under the weather”, Y/N said with a small smile, “Everything alright?”
The brunet nodded. “Yeah. Peggy’s asleep. So is her brother.”
“Did you get anything?”, Jack asked, pointing towards the interrogation room with his chin.
“Yeah”, he huffed, “seems like you really are our best interrogator, Jack. What a pity you’ll switch agencies.” He paused: “Apparently, he was captured in 1940 and brought to a facility in East Prussia, where he underwent torture for several years. After the war, HYDRA found new allies in the Soviet Union interested in their research, so the base continued in Kaliningrad.”
“So the Soviets know about that entire mind control stuff?”, Thompson asked, crossing his arms with a scowl. This was bad. HYDRA was a rogue organisation without a state to back it, but the Soviet Union had an entire apparatus behind it.
“Yeah”, Daniel confirmed, “he mentioned that they continued to work on their technique, improve the compliance of their subjects.”
“That’s why he’s only the BETA candidate”, Y/N threw in, “There must be an ALPHA, too. Someone who’s been trained better. That’s what they outlined in that booklet, too. Does he have details on that person?”
Daniel shook his head: “They made sure for candidates not to meet.”
“And do we know if he’s stable without a handler? Or is he just going to revert back into mad-mode?”, Jack questioned.
“I give no guarantees”, Daniel scoffed, “but I think without Keller’s orders, it should be fine. We’ll still send him to see a psychiatrist to look into possible de-programming, in case we were to ever run into another HYDRA scientist again.” His head turned to Y/N. “Thank you, Y/N. I know you could’ve shot him to get our mission done with less personal risk.”
She waved her hand: “Daniel. I’ve pulled the trigger too quick too often. I suppose I can try the other way once in a while.” Feeling Jack’s gaze upon her, she knew that he knew what she felt, even if he disagreed with her feeling that sense of guilt.
“We’ll take him back to L.A. with us”, Daniel said, nudging his head in the direction of where Michael was still locked up, “probably we’ll leave in about ten hours. Peggy organised private means of transportation.”
“You mean she called Stark.”
“I mean she called Stark”, Sousa confirmed Jack’s guess. “Are you coming with us?”
The two exchanged a quick glance.
“I think we have to get our affairs sorted in New York. I have to talk to McKinley to make him interim Chief”, Jack pulled a face, “and yes, I vetted him as thoroughly as I could, and though he doesn’t have my charm, he’s sure as hell not gonna turn out a Communist or HYDRA agent.”
Daniel and Y/N scoffed simultaneously.
“I described you in a great many ways, Thompson, but charming?”, Daniel grinned.
“If you need backup”, Y/N said, not having to say more than that to clarify her offer. Sousa nodded.
“We will.”
“I’ll organise our fights back to New York”, Y/N said to Jack before marching off to one of the offices to call the airline.
When she had left, Jack turned to Sousa.
“I need Carter to spend a weekend with Y/N, get her out of New York.”
“What?”, Sousa raised an eyebrow, “Are you double-crossing someone again?” It was a clearly a joke, but Jack still rolled his eyes.
“No, you jackass”, he huffed, “but there’s something I need to do, and I can’t have her knowing just yet. Come on, it’s awful keeping a secret from a spy, so I need a spy to help me!”
Daniel had his suspicions where this was headed, so he nodded without further question.
A few hours later, Y/N and Jack got ready to leave Miami behind.
“Tell Peggy I wish her all the best”, Y/N said to Sousa when they got ready to enter the taxi, “I think she’s quite busy with everything that’s happened.”
“I will”, Sousa said with a smile, “Thank you for the help.”
“Don’t mention it”, she said, “You two have saved our asses more than enough, too.”
Just when they were about to climb into the cab, the door flew open again and Peggy stormed out to hug Y/N. “You didn’t think I would not say goodbye to you, did you?”
“I’m sure you’ve got bigger things on your mind then waving at me”, Y/N laughed, “especially since I’m sure we’ll speak on the phone before you know it.”
“You can count on it!”, Peggy looked over to Jack, nodding at him. “Thank you, Jack. I even relinquish the desire to shoot you.”
Jack snorted. “Yeah? Thanks, Marge.”
“See you around, you two”, Peggy said with a smile as they departed. For once, despite the entire Michael-situation wasn’t yet resolved completely, their case was closed. Keller was dead. The Arena Club dismantled.
Jack Thompson’s and Y/N L/N’s tenue at the SSR was coming to a close.
……………
They decided to remain at the SSR for four more weeks to wrap things up, then take a few days off with the vacation days that they had, in theory, accumulated but had been unable to ever use because the world wouldn’t stop ending before starting at the CIA in March of 1948. That meant that they had a few weeks of mostly filing and other desk duties, which came to Y/N’s advantage as it gave her wound time to heal without feeling like she was missing out on anything that would’ve needed her skillset. A definite downside to that was, however, that it provided time to think. And as good as they were when dealing with criminals, from mobster to mad scientist, they were equally terrible at handling domestic issues.
And there was a rather big one that they had to take care of one way or another. Their own wedding.
‘Why the hell are you worrying about this, Thompson? You’ve seen how it goes at Carter and Sousa’s. Just don’t fall flat on your face and you’ll be fine’, Jack thought to himself, though he knew he was only kidding himself. There were a million things that could go wrong. Family was a blessing, but it was also a can of worms. And his friends from university and from his time in the Marine Corps didn’t know each other, so they might hate each other. And there was the miniscule thing around Y/N’s family. Or, more precisely, her father.
Their wedding would take place in February, which meant that it would most likely be cold as hell, but there wasn’t much they could do about it, it was one of the only moments – perhaps of their entire lives – where they could be fairly sure that they had time for such an event.
Y/N was a bit confused by the no-discussion-allowed tone Peggy had when she called her one day to inform her that they’d spend a weekend together back in Boston where Peggy knew a childhood friend who was selling wedding dresses. Y/N wasn’t that thrilled to return to that city again so soon – but after being threatened to have to fly to L.A. to meet with her instead, she agreed.
“You sure you don’t want to come?”, Y/N asked when packing her suitcase, looking over to her fiancé. “We don’t really do things traditionally, so I don’t mind if you see the dress before day X.”
“You’re right”, he pushed himself off the wall with a grin, “we did everything up until this moment in an unorthodox manner. Let’s do this one thing the old-fashion way. I’m sure my ma would be livid if we didn’t.” He gave her a quick kiss, causing Y/N to laugh.
“Your ma would be livid if she knew half the crap we’ve done together”, Y/N informed him, “And I don’t even mean just our work now, I doubt she’d be happy with all the stuff that happened before the war, either.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, we were practically saints at university”, he said with a wink, making her scoff.
“Yeah. I hope Nick bites his tongue if he’s around on our wedding day. Don’t want your parents’ image of their saintly son to be destroyed.”
………
Y/N was greeted by her friend at the airport. “You really didn’t have to fly all across the country just for this silly thing”, Y/N said after giving her a hug, “I’m sure Jack wouldn’t have walked off the altar just because I was wearing a normal dress. With that temper of his, he can’t afford to be picky.”
Peggy laughed at her jab at her fiancé. “You know, Y/N, I have to agree with you on this one! Doesn’t mean you should not do it, still. Maybe I just want to see that airhead speechless once.”
Y/N grinned. “He does have a tendency to want the last word. That, and he doesn’t have the best of filters. Should’ve seen him when we met again after the war. I wasn’t sure if he was about to jump at me to hug me, or slap me, and he just ended up accidentally insulting me.”
“What?”, Peggy looked offended on Y/N’s behalf when she heard that, and Y/N only waved.
“I’m pretty sure he had a rough night before”, she said with a lopsided smile, “and he’s never been good at personal diplomacy. Trust me, you eventually learn to handle and to interpret his insults. Most of them aren’t meant to be taken literally, or even figuratively, they’re just an expression of Thompson-doesn’t-know-what-to-say.”
As they made their way through the city, Y/N sighed. “Didn’t expect to be back here so soon, I have to say. But I guess I can’t hate every city for what happened in it, otherwise, sooner or later, I won’t be able to live in the US entirely.”
“So you’ve gotten over your hatred for L.A.?”, Peggy asked with raised eyebrows.
“No.”
“No?” The brunette laughed.
“No, but for a whole host of reasons. First”, Y/N raised a finger, “I don’t like the climate. Way to hot. I prefer more moderate weather, and New York’s summers are hot enough. Second, I am deeply weirded out by Hollywood. Feels like throwing a glittering blanket over a pile of dirty laundry.” Peggy laughed at her description of most people’s idolised part of America, but Y/N continued. “Third, I have to be a bit considerate towards Jack. And I doubt he can live in the same city as Howard Stark without accidentally murdering him.”
“Yes, some days, I share that sentiment”, Peggy agreed, “By all his brilliance, he is a nuisance, too.”
Y/N pressed her lips together, wondering if asking about Michael was appropriate. She decided, after having taken a bullet in order to save the man, she had the right to inquire. “How is your brother?”
“I think he is getting better. It is really hard, though, for him to – you know – figure out who he is, again. Who he really is, without mind control, without the programme that they had drilled into him”, Peggy replied, her tone calm and relatively collected. “But I know he’ll get through this. Michael taught me what it means to fight to get what no one thought possible. He survived all they’ve done to him – he’ll get back.”
“We’ll have to look into that programming, though”, Y/N muttered, clenching her jaw, “it doesn’t sound from the notebook that they’re thinking about scaling back their experiments. Chances are, we’ve got several other American or British POWs that underwent similar procedures and are being reintroduced into the country to do their bidding.”
“Yes”, Peggy agreed, frowning at the thought. Then, she shook her head. “But not today. Today, you’re going to find the perfect dress!”
…………
The quaint house stood in the middle of a large plot of land, and if Jack had to ever point to the definition of a house with a white picket fence, it would have been this house. It had everything one would draw on such a picture – trees in the garden, well-maintained flowers. A swing.
A swing? He looked at the wooden contraption. Yes, a swing. But Y/N was an only child – at least, she had been when she left for Europe. Oh well. ‘Here goes nothing’. He fought the urge to abort the mission, to just go home and get married to the girl he wanted to marry without pulling this stunt – he knew she wouldn’t have been mad at him for not doing it. But, once again, his stubborn self could not accept that her father was mad at her decision to leave for Europe. Even if it had taken Jack himself a minute to get around on that decision.
He sighed, and went to ring the doorbell.
First, no one answered the door. Looking through the window next to it, he saw that there was light burning in one of the rooms, so he assumed someone was in there. Then, through the window, he saw a kid walking towards him – maybe fifteen. Dark hair and dark eyes, he looked confused when he opened the door.
“Yes? Can I help you?”, the boy asked.
“I’m looking for Mr. L/N”, Jack replied, “is he here?”
“He’s upstairs”, the boy replied, “who’s asking? I can get him.”
“Jack Thompson”, Jack pulled out his SSR ID, “He might remember me from when he lived in New York. I went to school with his daughter.”
“Dad?”, the boy turned around and yelled upstairs, “someone here to see you! A federal agent!”
Jack heard the footsteps of Y/N’s father descending the stairs. When he saw Jack in the doorframe, his face froze.
“You’re the boy Y/N went to school and university with”, he stated.
“Yes”, Jack nodded, shaking the man’s hand, “Jack Thompson. I’ve worked with your daughter at the SSR after the war, too.”
An aura of darkness, perhaps of sorrow or nostalgia coated the man’s face. “Seems like she couldn’t let it go.”
Jack’s eyebrows twitched upwards. “Sir, her work saved countless lives. During her time in Germany, as well as during her time at the SSR. Most men would be happy settling for half of her record.”
Mr. L/N pressed his lips together. “And you came here to bring me the notice of her passing? Is that it? Your sworn duty as her commanding officer?”
“What?”, Jack frowned, “No. Y/N’s alive and well, sir. I came here to ask you to give your daughter the right to choose. She didn’t have to serve. And yet, she did. And when she came back, she didn’t have to work for an intelligence agency. And yet, she did. Hell, I didn’t task her with half the crap she ended up pursuing at the SSR, and in hindsight, I should thank the Lord that she did. If it hadn’t been for her, I’d be dead.”
Mr. L/N looked over his shoulder, at the boy still standing there. “Give us a moment, Rich.” Then, he stepped outside, alone, to face Jack.
“Mr. Thompson, when Y/N decided to head to England, her mother already knew that she was sick. She just didn’t tell Y/N right away. We didn’t want her to go, because we already knew we’d lose someone within the next years. Before she could tell Y/N, she was on her way to England.” He sounded bitter, angry, because that meant that his only child had left him alone.
“Sir, I get that this must’ve hurt, I do”, Jack clenched his jaw, “but we were all asked to make a sacrifice. We were asked to take up arms and run head first into enemy lines if need be. So yes, your family was ruined by war, even though Y/N came back, and for that, I am sorry. But how many families lost multiple children to the war, how many families were torn apart? She tried to do what was right, and she did a fine job.” He paused. “So I ask, is that resentment really worth ruining the chance of salvaging the relationship you could still have to your daughter? Because she left you in order to serve her country?” For once, he managed not to raise his voice to a hostile level, but he nonetheless stared down Mr. L/N.
“Mr. Thompson”, he said slowly, carefully, “Why did you come here?”
Jack huffed. “I came here to tell you that on February 19th, Y/N L/N will become Misses Y/N Thompson. She was convinced that you would not want to be at her wedding. I came here to ask you myself. And you can say no, but I wanted to give you the chance to not lose your daughter. Yes, she went to war, and yes, she came back different. But she came back. And if you let her, you can have her back, too.”
……………
February 19th was the date Jack had suggested. Y/N knew why that date meant something to him. It was the day he went to hell – February 19th, 1945, had been the day he landed on Iwo Jima. That day would always remain a black mark in his calendar, but this way, he took it back. It would no longer be the worst day of his life, it would be the best day of his life, too. Simply put, it would become the most meaningful day, good and bad, in his life.
Y/N had eventually found a dress – its long sleeves made up by a delicate lace, a deep v-neckline that, nonetheless, was modest, albeit a bit a different cut from the standard dresses. The A-line skirt allowed for easy movement, but did not consist of so much fabric that it would turn into a tripping hazard. Looking in the mirror, she saw Peggy smile at her from behind. Y/N herself didn’t manage to smile. She felt like she was staring at someone else entirely.
“You look stunning, Y/N. Absolutely gorgeous!”, Peggy stated and added with a smile, “What exactly Jack Thompson did to deserve you, I shall never know.”
Y/N couldn’t help but to grin at that remark. She knew that Peggy and Jack had started off – and continued for a long while – on the wrong foot.
“He really was a prick after the war, huh”, Y/N huffed, pulling the fabric around her neckline into place.
“The worst part is – at least he had somewhat of an explanation for it”, Peggy lamented, “But how many others are just as bad as he was and aren’t as marked by the years we spent abroad?”
“Peg, I am sorry to inform you, but if you want to live in a world without being degraded by our wonderful male co-workers”, Y/N said, turning to face the brunette with a cynical smile, “Then you were born at least two hundred years too early.”
“Well, someone has to pave the way, and I suppose, for the time being, that’ll have to be the two of us – and in all fairness, we have come a long way within the SSR”, Peggy replied, and Y/N nodded with one eyebrow raised.
“I suppose we have. Though you’ve had it significantly worse than I did. I was never accused of treason, or kicked out, or blackmailed with another person’s file”, Y/N said dryly.
“Indeed, the accusation of treason mostly came from my now-husband, I was kicked out by Chief Dooley, and blackmailed by Chief Thompson”, she recounted, laughing, “I suppose now I’ve gotten a beating from all the Chiefs, so maybe I am good now.”
“You better be, considering you’ll be heading a new organisation soon”, Y/N winked, “unless you go against yourself – you’ve got only Howard Stark to fear, and I think he has better things to do than to go after you. A suggestion from me – he should invest in a better vault. And security system.”
……………
“Mr. Thompson!”, Jack looked over his shoulder as he was walking back to his car when he saw the kid from before running towards him.
“Can I help you, kid?”, he asked, turning around with an eyebrow raised.
“Dad never mentioned that Y/N was still alive”, the boy said, “He also never said that she was dead, now that I think about it. I guess, I just explained it away, given that she was never here.” He held out his hand: “I’m Rich. I’m Y/N’s stepbrother.”
Stepbrother. That made sense. A son from a previous marriage, whose father either had died, or was so absent that he had started to call Mr. L/N dad.
“Pleasure to meet you, Rich.”
“What is she like?”
Jack knew that he meant it as a completely innocent question, but to him, it was loaded with the memories of about fifteen years that he had, in one way or another, spent with Y/N. He didn’t even know where to begin with. How should he explain to this kid what a person Y/N was?
“Y/N”, he eventually said, elongating her name in the search for words, “She’s, uhm, probably the bravest, kindest, and strongest person I’ve ever met. Words don’t do her justice.”
“Dad hardly ever mentioned her – you said that she served… where did she serve? Dad didn’t seem thrilled about it.”
Jack knew that it wasn’t his story to tell – the spying, the entire tale of Y/N’s time in Germany, but he also wanted to convey to this boy that his ‘dad’ was dead-wrong for having been upset at his daughter, so he decided to rub it right in his face. “She fought against the Nazis. She spent the war in Europe. That’s why she left.”
It had the effect he had wanted – Rich’s mouth fell open as he stared at Jack in disbelief. “What? That’s awesome!”
“Yeah, well”, Jack gave him a lopsided grin and nodded towards the house behind them, “tell that to your dad, will ya, kid?”
“I will, sir!” Jack almost pulled a face at the kid calling him ‘sir’. Only the pencil pushers in the SSR called him that, and even they only rarely did. Most of them just called him ‘Chief’. The last time he was called ‘sir’ right, left and centre was back in the military.
“See you around, Rich.”
…………
When Y/N returned, she wasn’t surprised when Jack was not at either her or his place – though their time at the SSR was coming to an end, he still didn’t like to let go off the wheel entirely just yet. So she headed to the office, where her search was indeed successful.
Entering the office, she felt the eyes of the men inside it on her.
Raising an eyebrow and putting her hands on her hips, she paused. “Is something the matter, gentlemen?”
“We knew about you leaving the SSR together with the Chief, but he only now mentioned that you’ll soon be married”, Goldberg eventually said, causing Y/N to raise her other eyebrow as she laughed.
“Yes, I’m sorry for myself, too.”
“Hey!” She grinned at Jack whose head popped out of the bullpen as he shook his head: “Unbelievable.”
“Congratulations, Y/N. Can’t say I saw that coming when you had your first day here, I thought you’d be more likely his murderer than his wife, but I stand corrected.”
Y/N laughed at Goldberg’s not entirely wrong analysis of hers and Jack’s first meeting post-war.
“What can I say”, she said, “we’ve never done things traditionally. That applies professionally as well as privately, it would seem.”
“I swear, if you now start telling them about our yesteryears, I’ll fire you on the spot”, Jack warned jokingly, “I want to upkeep my reputation for my next job.”
Y/N huffed: “I have no idea what you’re getting at, Jack. Your drinking escapades aside, and your unbelievable ability to make enemies, you were a straight-A student all your life.” And both of these aspects of his personality weren’t all that well-hidden, though, perhaps, his subordinates merely got to see the surface of both.
In fact, that was perhaps one of Jack Thompson’s most proficient traits. He had the capability to adapt to his environment, mould himself into whatever people expected from a person in his situation, put his own personality on the backburner in order to climb the ladder. He had always wanted to be the best – the best at maths, the best at sports, the best at anything he ever did, and he’d do anything to succeed. That didn’t necessarily mean to push others out the way, it certainly meant he fought hard to be better than the next guy, but as harsh as he was to others, he was at least ten times harsher with himself. He was able to build up a wall to reinforce himself to be ready to take on a world that had been incredibly hostile in their lifetime. They had experienced an economic crash and an economic recovery, they had experienced the worst war the world had ever seen. Not only that, but they had fought in it. And then they had come back to a country where they felt like strangers, only to realise that they had to second-guess every person around them. His wall of anger and of sarcasm and rudeness, it was also a wall of hard work, of doubt and of a deep conviction to want to serve this country. It was the wall that only very few got to ever climb, and Y/N was perhaps the one person who knew every brick in the wall.
To understand Jack Thompson was to understand the environment he operated in. That’s how it’s always been – he had been a different person when they were surrounded by other students as he was when he was with his family. He was different when being the SSR Chief, or her fiancé. Essentially, he grew up in a society that valued first and foremost the outcome, rather than the means. And the outcome society valued most was success. That might come across as greedy or selfish, but Y/N knew – at heart, he still did it all with good intentions. He wouldn’t ever back out of a fight in fear over his own life. He was willing to die for his job. And he didn’t trust many others to do a better job than he did himself. Again, this might sound selfish and arrogant to many, but Y/N had seen ‘the others’. Men like Vernon Masters, Calvin Chadwick and so on. They were just as ambitious, but they were cowards. They were willing to sacrifice others for their own success. He was willing to sacrifice himself.
And that, Y/N thought to herself, is why I’m going to marry him – to keep that part of him controlled. Because as much as she admired him for his willingness to give his all for cause and country – she really didn’t want him to become a martyr. She didn’t need for him to become the next Captain America. She was fine with him just being a good man, a man with a long list of flaws and a record of mistakes.
She could not ever imagine being with someone as literally flawless as Steve Rogers – then, she would feel like an absolute imposter. She had just as long a list of flaws and mistakes.
That’s why it worked. They needed each other – and in a sense, they always had.

Why you'd been tasked to go undercover with Jack Thompson had been bewildering you since you learned of the news just before your lunch break. What was more bewildering, however, was how pleased he seemed with the whole affair. He’d grinned as he told the office during the briefing and his eyes landed on you with mingling amusement and praise.
You sat at your desk scowling down at your lunch, too sickened by your evening mission to even eat. It would be an easy mission for the most part. You were mostly eye candy when you thought about it. But you'd be stuck on smug Thompson’s arm the whole time. The man probably wouldn’t let you go to the suite by yourself. You groaned under your breath, shaking your head.
“Not thrilled with your position?” a voice asked you out of nowhere. You looked up, the sandwich still in hand, and forced a smile. Peggy had come back with the other men’s lunch orders since you needed to “rest up” for tonight, according to Thompson.
“No, I’m not pleased with it at all, actually,” you said through a sigh, putting your sandwich down, still too nauseous to eat. The main room was practically empty since Thompson said so much had to be done in preparation for tonight, so Peggy began passing sandwiches out to the abandoned desks. Despite moving around, you could tell you had her attention and continued. “I mean, why would he pick me? He’s only ever got me doing sandwich orders,” you paused as Peggy stopped moving.
“No offense,” you murmured. Peggy laughed, finishing up what she was doing as she shook her head.
“None taken, but I know how you feel,” she threw away the to-go bag and pulled a chair up to the opposite side of your desk. “At least you're going in the field tonight,” she sighed, crossing her arms and leaning forward with her elbows on your desk.
“Thompson said this was a department-wide mission. What are you doing?” Peggy scoffed and rolled her eyes, puckering her red lips with an annoyed expression.
“I’m going to be listening to coms and sending in backup if necessary. But I’m not allowed to be back up,” you scoffed and shook your head.
“That’s ridiculous! If anything, you should be doing my job,”
“Why do you say that?” she sounded genuinely curious and you shrugged.
“You’ve always been better in the field, plus youve got the drive and motivation to do well. I admire that,” Peggy seemed surprised by that response and didn’t say anything for a long moment. She bit her lip before speaking, her eyes wandering, yet avoiding your gaze.
“y/n, you sell yourself short,” she looked back up, meeting your gaze with a new softness. “You have the same training and the same capabilities as anyone here. You are an excellent, dedicated agent and you deserve that recognition,” you smiled, shying away from her gaze with a light chuckle. You'd grown close to Peggy over the past few years of working together and naturally, you'd become one another's cheerleaders of sorts. Heaven knew you both needed it, given your working environment and coworkers.
“Thank you, Peg,” the Brit smiled a wide, rather wicked grin and winked just as your conversation was cut short with the return of the offices' male population.
“No problem. Naturally, you’ll do great, but I’ve always got your back,” she stood up, returning the chair she had stolen as she went back to her desk. You began to rifle through the files about the evening's mission on your desk as you went back to your lunch. Thompson happened to walk past you on his way to his office and stopped short. You didn’t pay him any mind till he cleared his throat. You could feel eyes from around the office on you as you replied by giving him the attention he wanted.
“Do you need something, Thompson?” you asked, taking a bite of your sandwich as you watched him carefully. He smiled and shook his head slightly, exchanging an amused look with the agent that sat in front of you. You didn’t share this amusement. You knew Thompson got off getting under you and Peggy’s skin, which was another reason he’d brought one of you on the evening's mission at all. But you weren't going to have it.
“Shouldn’t you be getting ready for tonight?” you stopped chewing with an arched brow. You stared at him for a moment, then looked down at your watch.
“It’s barely one,” you had to stifle the scoff that tickled the back of your throat. Thompson was browning impatient with you now, sighing as he ran a hand over his chin.
“Well, ladies have a habit of taking their time, and I’d like you to look your best,” another chuckle from some of the men in the office. You held your ground, taking the time to finish the bite of the sandwich still in your mouth before properly answering.
“If you’re offering to let me off early, Chief then I’ll gladly take you up on your offer. Just say the word and I’m on my way,” Thompson glared at you, any amusement in his eyes turning to irritation at your confidence. His nostrils flared with injured pride and he huffed, walking away from your desk.
“Be back by eight,” he barked back. The office grew quiet again, eyes trained on you, then hurriedly men went back to work with the ring of a phone. You smiled, turning around as you collected your things to exchange the look with Peggy. She was practically grinning from ear to ear as she caught your eye and waved as she sent you off.
-*-
Just as you'd been instructed, you arrived back at the office at eight. With your time off, you'd been able to hit the salon and get your hair done up nice for the evening, even if it was just a sting operation. The plan was quite simple and frankly, you didn’t have to do much. New weaponry was on the market, again, and the office had gotten anonymous intel that a sale would be going on with the party as a cover.
You’d be out on the floor, mingling with Thompson and posing as his date. A few other agents would be scattered around the party and it would be your job with Thompson to locate the seller and the buyer, intersecting the deal with an arrest. It was a rather basic operation, but it would still be worth being careful.
So, you now found yourself almost unbearably close to Thompson in a well-known hotel with a glass of champagne in on hand and an earpiece tucked behind your hair. Jack was talking with a man he seemed to know and cracking rather dry jokes as you scanned the room. You sipped your drink, leaving behind one more sip with a sigh. You felt Jack’s hand round your waist squeeze just a tad and your head whipped around. He had on a fake grin and chuckled under his breath.
“Make sure you pace yourself, dear. You know how you can get with a few too many drinks,” you knew the comment was to maintain your cover (hopefully), but you forced an irritating smile and laughed rather abruptly.
“I can’t make any promises, hun. Not when the night’s still young,” you tried to sound sweet, but the bitterness spit from your tongue. He exhaled with a twitch in his smile and turned back to his company, seemingly getting the picture.
“Honestly, who does he think he is,” you heard Peggy grumble over the earpiece. You hid your smile behind your glass, taking in the last of your champagne. You knew for a fact, that if you heard her then Thompson had too. It was quite a pleasing thought to have.
You continued to scan the room as Jack went on conversating. another tray of drinks came around and you got yourself another. That was when you noticed the rather shifty woman with a handbag that seemed to bulge strangely. She seemed paranoid, given the way her eyes frantically dashed about the room. You squinted, furrowing your brow as she darted to the suite without looking at Thompson much, you blindly shoved your new drink into his hand. You missed the confused and annoyed look he gave you as you waved him off, moving to leave.
“I just need the powder room,” you mumbled, eyes trained on the woman running from the party. When you’d ducked into a hall behind her, you flipped your hair out of the way of the earpiece. “I think I’ve got her,” you mumbled quickly, trying to keep suspicions low.
“Her?” one of the male agents working coms with Peggy asked. You rolled your eyes. Yes, a “her”. Why was the idea of a woman going undercover still so shocking? You continued to follow her and caught the tail end of her running into a back door of the hallway. You kept up, peeking into the door to find a long, winding set of stairs leading upwards. She didn’t want to be followed, otherwise, she would have used an elevator. You’d have preferred it if she used an elevator, but you followed.
She went up and up, and it got to a point where you had to stop and take off your heels to avoid developing blisters.
“Is she going to the roof? you heard Peggy ask over the intercom.
“I’m not sure. I hope not,” you whispered. “It’s freezing this time of year,” a chill ran down your spine just thinking about it. You heard Peggy subtly laugh and subconsciously smiled ad you looked up the stairs. Finally, she stopped and exited onto the floor. When you arrived on the floor landing shortly after her, it was marked as the sixteenth floor.
“She’s on the sixteenth,” you said over your coms. “Thompson, are you getting any of this?” you asked with no response.
“Get Thompson’s coms working,” Peggy ordered the men in the truck with her. Without waiting, you pushed forward just in time to see the woman dart down the hall. She ducked into a suite, shutting the door quickly behind her. You approached the door cautiously, eyes scanning the empty hall just to reassure you that it was empty. Your hand took hold of the doorknob, which was unlocked, but you hesitated. Looking down at your feet, some kind of smoke began wafting out from inside the suite. Your eyes widened and you stumbled back.
“There's gas!” you yelped rather loudly, scurrying to pull a handkerchief out of your bag to cover your nose and mouth.
“Gas? y/n, are you sure?” Peggy asked urgently in your ear. You blinked, taking more steps away from the door. You shook your head, pursing your lips under the handkerchief as you worked on formulating words.
“Yes, gas or smoke- something’s leaking out from under the door,” Peggy began trying to tell you to keep calm and wait, but there was a loud bang from inside of the suite, a bang that sounded eerily like a gunshot. Without any more hesitation, you ran forward and barged in with the handkerchief still covering your face.
Condensation leaked out the opened door and you arrived inside to find the woman shaking with a gun in hand, pointing it straight in front of her. Looking downward, you noticed the legs sticking out from the end of the bed and the blood pooling from the gunshot wound. What you now decided had to be steam leaked out of some kind of contraption you couldn’t recognize sitting on a dresser, but before you could note anything else, the woman turned on you with hyperventilating breath. Peggy was yelling in your ear, trying to get some kind of confirmation that you were alright.
You took the handkerchief from your mouth and put your hands up, preparing to offer her help and assure her that things would be alright when she abandoned the gun and lunged forward. Your back hit the ground, knocking the wind from your lungs with a squeaky wheeze. Her hands pushed your face into the ground, squeezing tight, but you had enough vision to notice something strange in her other hand. You couldn’t get a good look, but when she pushed a button, there was a pulsing, screeching sound that felt like it was squeezing your brain. You cried out, squeezing your eyes shut in pain and before you knew it, she was sprinting down the hall, leaving you on the carpet. It was all so fast that you hadn’t had the time to react.
You groaned, squeezing your eyes shut as the smoke pooled around you on the floor. Thompson was nowhere to be seen but yelling could be heard from the party. You rolled over onto your hands and knees as your ears began to ring. You held yourself up on the balls of your palms and took the crackling earpiece out with a harsh exhale of breath. Your hearing was impaired for the time being by the device the woman had used, but as you collected yourself you could have sworn someone said something about the roof.
You felt hands on your shoulder before you could hear properly and adrenaline boiling in your head, pushing yourself away. It took a moment to realize it was Peggy kneeling beside you on the carpet. You took in long, shaking breaths as she urged you to relax and breathe. Peggy helped you to sit up against the wall, her hands squeezing as she steadied your shoulders. You managed a pained smile and chuckled.
“You got lucky, getting to use the elevator,” Peggy seemed stunned for a second, not understanding your joke. But when it did click, she smiled, sighing with relief as she shook her head.
“I also took the stairs, actually,” you groaned, knocking your head back against the wall.
“Why would you do that to yourself?” she chuckled again, but her eyes drifted away from yours. You caught her hand moving up to your face, reaching forward to gently thumb at your lip. You hissed at her touch and she flinched back, but you shook your head. “I’m ok. It just stings a little,” if you were honest, Peggy’s touch had been quite nice, minus the cut in your thumb. She was far more gentle than one might expect, especially if you'd seen her fight before, which you had plenty.
“It doesn’t look all that bad,” she murmured, rubbing your bit of blood between her thumb and forefinger. “And for the record, the stairs seemed faster at the time,” you chuckled again and hummed.
“You might regret that in the morning,” your tongue darted out, wetting your bottom lip and you were met with the tangy, metallic taste of your blood. “She probably scratched it with her nails when she squeezed my face,” you trailed off, recalling the instance before. Peggy shook her head, and much to your surprise, she brushed your hair from your brow with feather-light fingertips.
“I won’t regret it as long as I know that you’re safe,” her tone was warm and soft, but unfamiliar. It was somewhat like how she’d sounded earlier in the day at lunch, but still not quite right. Her eyes trained on you, studying your long and hard as though she was making a consideration. She bit her lip, brows scrunching as she watched you, her fingers trailing over the apples of your cheeks and down the line of your jaw.
If you tried to talk, you probably wouldn’t be able to string along a sentence. As much as you'd try to hide it, a part of you had always wanted Peggy. She was an intoxicating creature to be around and you craved her attention, her affection. And here you were, practically captivating her gaze and you couldn’t believe it was real. Maybe you'd hit your head harder than you thought. Of course, she said something just as you got lost in your thoughts and you’d missed it. Expectation pooled in her eyes and she looked nervous.
“I’m sorry. My hearings a bit shot,” you forced a chuckle and she cleared her throat, eyes shifting.
“I said I’d like to kiss you,” words failed once more, and without another thought, you moved forward, removing the support of the wall in exchange for her touch. She held you close, taking your flurry of affections with open arms and parted lips. Her hands were strong on your biceps and back, squeezing tight with impending anticipation as your fingers pushed tightly into her hair. Her breath tasted and smelled strongly of sherry as it fanned over your lips. A gentle scrape from her teeth over your bottom lip was enough to reopen the closing wound. It added a familiar metallic taste you'd both grown familiar with in your mutual line of work. And just as quickly as it had started, it was finished, but it didn’t fail to leave you breathless.
"That was quite something," Peggy murmured. your thumb gently began to stroke the soft flesh of her cheek as you grinned.
"breathtaking, even" you added, your nose scrunching with a muffled giggle "almost like running up a flight of stairs,"

12 Days of Christmas Masterlist
Masterlist
“He’s self entitled and an idiot and I don’t like him.” Y/N said to Peggy while the two looked over files for their upcoming mission. Peggy and Daniel had just recently moved back to New York, per Jack’s request. Besides, they didn’t like Hollywood that much anyway. “Honestly, I’m not sure how he even got the position of Chief. I could do the job better myself and I’ve only been here for a year.”
“You haven’t even gotten to know him.” Peggy said, looking up from her reading. Her eyes were practically going cross from reading so long, which is partially why she chose to bring the Chief up. The two had spent the day reading everything they could find pertaining to their mission, including picking out dresses for the Christmas party they would be attending.
“I’ve seen all I need to see. A sexist asshole like him doesn’t deserve to be very high on my list of priorities.” Y/N said, putting her paper down and rubbing her eyes. “How long until we leave?” Y/N asked, yawning.
“Let’s see.” Peggy looked at her wrist watch, blinking a couple times to focus. “The boys said to be ready by six, since our plane leaves at eight thirty. We can sleep on the plane ride, and once we get to the hotel we can rest up before meeting again. We’ll need to be in character from the second we step outside the car.” Peggy told her. Y/N’s brows furrowed.
“I thought we were just playing normal civilians.” Y/N said, confused. Of course they’d have different names and maybe a wig, but if Peggy said they had to be acting from the moment they’re out of the car, then there was a detail she was not in on. Peggy’s eyes widened.
“Jack didn’t tell you?” She asked quietly, and Y/N shook her head.
“When would I have talked to Jack?” They had just gone over how much she didn’t like him, why would she talk to him?
“He was supposed to tell you.” Peggy stood, and Y/N followed in suit, the two straightening out their dresses.
“Tell me what?” Y/N’s heart beat quicker than she thought was possible, mind racing at the possibilities. “Peg, what was he supposed to tell me?”
“You’re playing a couple.”
~
“You didn’t tell her?” Daniel asked as the two boys drove to pick up the girls.
“She avoids me, Sousa. It’s hard to talk to her when every time I try she walks away.” Jack didn’t look over, even though they had a stop sign.
“Maybe if you weren’t such an asshole she’d like you.” Daniel said quietly, but Jack still heard it. He sighed, a hand on his face as he thought.
“I’m not trying to be an asshole. But I’m in charge. I’m the Chief, for heaven's sake. I have to be a strong front.” Jack explained as they turned onto the girls’ street. The two had decided to rent a small house together, and this was the boys’ first time seeing it.
“That doesn’t mean you have to be rude.” Daniel said it quietly, the two being resorting to silence as they pulled up to the house. Daniel moved to go knock on the door, but Jack just honked, signaling for the two girls to come out of the house. A minute later, the two were locking the door, bags in their hands. This time, the two did get out, helping load the girl’s bags in the trunk.
“I trust you two read up about the mission.” Jack said, shutting the trunk.
“We did as best as we could, considering you left out some major details.” Y/N said, arms crossed as she stared Jack down.
“You never asked.” Jack responded, copying her stance.
“I shouldn’t have to ask for mission details!” Y/N stomped her foot, causing Peggy and Daniel to look at each other.
“Alright, why don’t we talk about it on the way to the airport?” Daniel ushered the two towards the car, Y/N rolling her eyes as she got in the backseat. Jack tried to get into the driver seat, but Peggy shook her head.
“Did you forget the mission, Thompson?” She asked, making Jack raise his eyes. “Better get in the back with your wife.” She smirked, making Jack glare at her.
“It’s just a drive, Marge.” He shot back, but she wasn’t budging.
“Exactly, a drive you need to spend debriefing. With Y/N. Who’s supposed to be your wife.” She went to open the door, but Jack tried to move in front of her.
“No one is going to see us get out of the car.” He told her, and she sighed, ready to rip out her hair.
“You don’t know that! Now, get in the backseat.” With that she slid into the driver seat, making Jack shut his eyes, take a deep breath, and get into the back.
“Oh great.” Y/N said, looking out the window. It was beginning to get dark outside, meaning she couldn’t go over files or her character profile. Not that she needed to, since apparently the most important part of her character had been left out.
“That’s no way to speak to your husband.” Jack tried to joke, but regretted it when she turned to glare at him.
“Why wouldn’t you tell me that our characters were married? That’s a pretty important part of the mission, don’t ya think?” She asked, and he rolled his eyes.
“Please,as if anything could throw you off.” Y/N took a second, trying to decide if it was a compliment. “Besides, you hate me. I tried to tell you, but half the time you were ignoring me or flirting with an agent.”
“Flirting, please, Chief. You cannot call that flirting.” She chuckled humorlessly, shaking her head. “For a year I was the only woman working there. I’ll do whatever it takes to get a good assignment.”
“Except talk to me, the Chief.” Jack shot back, making Y/N squint her eyes in annoyance.
“Oh, look, this car has a nice radio.” Daniel said from the passenger seat, turning the music up. He was trying to stop the fighting, which was damn near impossible at this point.
“I’d rather be stuck on filing for a month straight than kiss you ass.” Y/N said over the radio. Jack scoffed, leaning back in his seat.
“That’s good. Perfect, actually, because that’s where you’ll be for the next two.” He crossed his arms, smirking as Y/N’s mouth dropped.
“Oh, I love this song.” Peggy turned the radio up even louder, but the two didn’t hear it.
“As soon as this mission is over I’m requesting a transfer!” She yelled, leaning over in her seat to get closer to Jack.
“Good, I’d be kicking you out soon anyway!” He was louder than the music, making Daniel turn it down.
“Oh, no! Who will be doing your filing then? The next girl you decide to hire solely for the purpose of busy work and eye candy?” Y/N was still yelling, even with the music turned down. Jack moved closer to her, their faces close.
“Oh, you wish you were eye candy. I only hired you because Dooley had been in the process of doing it himself, and I trusted his decision.” Jack smirked, but so did she.
“I’m so glad you let everyone else make your decisions. What, was it Daniel’s idea to be married couples too?” She asked, making Jack instantly drop his satisfied look for a scowl. “I bet Peggy even thought up the mission plan for you.”
“That’s it, you’re done. As soon as we get to the airport, you’re taking a taxi back home.” Jack sat back in his seat, looking out the window.
“Jack, that’s hardly fair. We need Y/N for this mission.” Peggy said from the front seat, looking in the rear view mirror to see Y/N’s shocked face.
“Really, Chief? I insult you one time and you fire me?” She gaped, surprise filling out her voice.
“Do you really think that we can go an entire week pretending to be married? We barely even know each other!” Jack was now talking to the whole car, and Y/N didn’t have a good comeback for this one.
“That’s what the plane ride is for. Now, let’s just all take a little time to listen to the radio.” Daniel said calmly, turning the music up once more. The pair in the back seat looked out their own windows, stealing glances at each other when they weren’t looking.
It was going to be a long week.
~
“What’s your favorite color?” Y/N asked, making Jack freeze. He was reading a magazine that he didn’t look up from, and Y/N just stared. The two were forced to sit next to each other on the plane, and they hadn't talked the whole way. Now, with their time on the aircraft dwindling, Y/N decided to finally strike a conversation.
“Color?” He finally asked, still not looking up.
“Are you deaf?” She shot back, unable to control her anger.
“L/N,” Jack lifted his head, looking at her as she took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, that was a little over the top.” She apologized, making his heart speed and his skin freeze. She was actually apologizing, being the bigger person after starting the conversation herself.
“Navy blue.” Jack mumbled, looking back at his magazine.
“I beg your pardon?” Y/N asked, not believing her ears.
“My favorite color.” He flipped the page, and Y/N nodded, licking her lips and looking forward. She hadn't meant that, but she was willing to let it go. “You?”
“Hm?” Why was she so flustered? Her heart was racing, and she knew it wasn’t in anger this time.
“You’re favorite color.” Jack smiled as he looked at her, making her smile back and tilt her head.
“Is that a smile?” She mumbled, fighting her hands to avoid reaching out to him.
“Don’t change the subject.” He nudged her, and that seemed to be the pushing edge back to reality. Y/N cleared her throat, sitting up straighter.
“Uh, F/C.” She nodded before looking out the window, away from Jack. They didn't talk the rest of the ride there.
The week just got that much longer.
~
“Are you alright, Mrs. Thatcher?” Jack asked, hand on her back as they walked into the hotel. Y/N fought the urge to wiggle away from him, disgust filling her body. She couldn't help but play with the ring on her finger, as it was so new and different.
“Oh, I’m perfect, Mr. Thatcher.” Y/N smiled, Jack leaving her side to open the door for her and the couple behind them.
“Welcome in.” The desk reception lady said, and the men nodded at him, the girls off to the side with smiles wide on their faces.
“We should have two rooms; one for Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thatcher and one for Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Beckett.” Jack said, and Y/N turned to Peggy.
“This is where the party is at?” She asked looking around the large lobby. It was quite elegant, one of the more fancier hotels that she’d stayed at. The party was two days from then, meaning they really only had a full day to prepare.
“Yes. The target, James Barlowe, owns the hotel. The vault should be on the top floor; it’s his private penthouse.” Peggy whispered, and Y/N nodded, still smiling.
“Love, can you help me with the bags?” Daniel asked Peggy, who smiled and nodded. Jack walked over to Y/N and extended his arm, and she begrudgingly smiled and took it. The four walked out to the car, grabbing their stuff out before locking it. Jack insisted on carrying all of his and Y/N’s bags, which she had no qualms about. If Jack wanted to create less work for her and she didn’t have to touch him, it was a win-win situation. When they finally made it into the lobby, Jack paused.
“Can you grab the key, sweetheart?” Jack asked, and Y/N nodded, moving closer to him.
“Where is it?” She asked softly, standing closer to him then she had ever before.
“My pocket.” He answered, face in a tight smile, not looking at her. Y/N took a deep breath, then reached into his front pocket grabbing the key and holding it up.
“Thanks, honey.” Jack kissed her cheek, and she put on a tight smile, trying not to blush. She looked around, seeing a few late night stragglers before realizing Jack did it to make sure the occupants of the lobby knew they were married.
But she would not blush for Jack Thompson.
“Shall we go?” Y/N asked looking at the tag on the key. It said 2H.
“We’re on the first floor.” Peggy held up her key, and Y/N sighed. Of course they were on different floors.
“So, we’ll see you tomorrow then?” She asked, yawning. She hadn’t gotten any sleep on the plane, and it was very early in the morning at this point.
“Yes, we should plan on meeting up at eight.” Daniel said, making Jack sigh.
“Let’s go with noon. We need some sleep, So-“
“What a great idea, dear.” Y/N cut Jack off from saying Daniel’s actual last name, potentially blowing their cover. There were probably eyes and ears everywhere and there was no way they were getting caught, let alone on the first night.
“Sounds great, see you then.” Peggy smiled, the two ‘couples’ parting. Y/N and Jack made their way to their room quietly, Y/N letting Jack carry all the bags.
“This is us.” Y/N said, unlocking the door and holding it open for Jack. When she looked in the room, she felt the air leave her body.
There was only one bed.
Of course there was only one bed. Why would there not be. They were a couple, and their target owned this hotel. He must know people were after him, and if he found out a married couple was in a room with two beds, their cover would be blown and they would most likely be killed. It didn't matter that the chances were slim, they couldn't afford to risk it.
“Right, well, you can take the bathroom first.” Jack said. Y/N nodded, reaching into her bag to grab her stuff. She decided to tale a quick shower, and once she was done Jack walked to the bathroom without looking at her. She sat at the vanity to braid her hair, finishing quickly and yawning. She flopped onto the bed, on top of the covers, and immediately fell asleep.
~
When Y/N woke up, she was snuggled under the covers, legs pressed up against someone else’s. She took a second to blink, look around, then turn, still half asleep. She saw Jack, fast asleep, hands under his body, one leg entwined with her own. She stared at him, his head facing her, hair mused everywhere in a way she had never seen. She found it kind of cute which made her turn around immediately.
Jack Thompson was not cute.
Y/N froze as she heard Jack wake up, moving his body away from her’s. She sat up as he got out of bed, the two rubbing their eyes.
“Good morning.” Jack said, his voice low and gravely. Y/N’s eyes widened as she heard him, heart starting to beat quickly.
“How’d you sleep?” Y/N asked, looking at the small clock on the desk side. It was eleven, meaning they only had an hour to get ready. Jack mumbled lowly in response, and she just shook her head with a smile. She grabbed her clothes as Jack walked to the bathroom, and figuring he was there to get dressed, she began to strip out of her pajamas. Just as she had put her skirt on, Jack walked back in.
“Holy shit!” Jack yelled, Y/N’s eyes widening as she turned around, hands covering her chest. She thanked God it was at least covered with a bra, but Jack still wasn’t turning around.
“Jack!” She yelled, and he finally moved to leave, the door to the bathroom slamming. She pulled the blouse onto her body, then huffed out a breath. “That was a great apology, by the way.” She told him, watching him walk out tentatively.
“It’s not my fault.” He told her, finishing buttoning his shirt. She stared opened mouth, shocked by his audacity.
“You stared at my chest for a full five seconds before I yelled at you!” She told him, and he was speechless for a second.
“I wasn’t staring at your chest!” He yelled, making her shake her head. “Plus, it was not that long.” He mumbled back, moving to his suitcase. He started to put his clothes in a drawer, and Y/N began to hang her blouses.
“It totally was.” She shot back, fighting the heat she felt in her cheeks.
“It should be a compliment.” Jack said, making Y/N drop the hanger she was holding. She turned to stare at him for a second, all warm feelings gone.
“Excuse me?” She asked quietly, rage filling her.
“I didn’t mean it like that.” Jack started to stand, but Y/N’s stare froze him in place.
“Then how, Mr. Thatcher, did you mean?” She crossed her arms, and he finally stood all the way. The use of his fake last name had irked him in a way he couldn’t describe, and now the two were both full of rage. She wasn't listening to his side, didn't want to hear the truth.
“I don’t - you’re not understanding. I wasn’t staring at your chest, I-“
“Stop talking!.” Y/N shouted over him, which did make him shut up. He blinked slowly at her, watching her think about what to say before finally opening her mouth.
“Jack, Y/N! You up?” Daniel was knocking on their door, cutting Y/N off before she even started to speak.
“It’s only eleven fifteen, Sousa!” Jack yelled back, making Y/N roll her eyes. Jack may be a great agent, but he needed to stop being careless with Daniel's last name.
“We gotta get going, Peg wants to go to lunch!” Daniel knocked again, and Jack went over to go get it. While he invited the couple in, Y/N finished hanging up her last blouse and the party dress as Daniel and Peggy sat on the small couch in the corner of the room. Y/N quickly shoved her pajamas into her suitcase with her skirts and pants, deciding to put those away later.
“Don’t forget to pull up your suspenders and tie your tie.” Y/N told Jack as she sat at the vanity, ready to put on some light makeup. Jack grumbled a response, and Y/N fought the urge to roll her eyes.
“Did you guys just wake up?” Peggy asked, watching quickly apply her blush.
“Yes, unfortunately.” Jack responded, pulling a coat on over his shirt. Y/N finished up her makeup quickly, pushing her chair out and looking at the couple on the couch.
“So, where are we going to lunch?” She asked, grabbing a cardigan out of the closet. She quickly un-did her braids before fashioning her hair to her liking, as quick as she could. Everyone was quite impressed.
“We weren’t sure. There’s a cute looking diner across the street.” Peggy offered, standing up. She discreetly helped Daniel up, which made Y/N smile. She was glad Peggy and Daniel worked well as a couple.
“Sounds great.” Y/N said, sitting on the bed to slip her shoes on. She felt Jack sit down next to her to put his own shoes on, and Y/N stood, walking away from him since she was still mad from that morning.
“What’s going on?” Daniel asked, looking between the two.
“It’s nothing.” Jack said, and Y/N shook her head.
“Nothing but Jack just being a man with no boundaries.” Y/N said, rolling her eyes.
“We could have told you that.” Peggy said as the four of them left the room. Y/N put the key in her purse as Jack closed the door behind them all.
“Tomorrow we need to spend some time at the Christmas dance. We can’t sneak off immediately.” Daniel told them as they walked down the stairs, smiling at people once they made their way into the lobby.
“How much time are we thinking? No need to dilly dally.” Y/N said, walking through the door Jack opened for her without so much as a thank you.
"At least until Barlowe makes his appearance. As soon as he shows up, it'll be the perfect time to leave." Peggy suggested, causing them all to nod.
“We need to make sure no one suspects us.” Jack suggested, but Y/N acted as if she hadn’t heard him. She walked ahead of him, keeping a steady pace until he grabbed her arm, pulling her back. “Y/N,”
“What, you’re pulling me back just to look at my breasts again?” Y/N mumbled, smiling as Jack rolled his eyes.
“I wasn’t looking at your breasts!” Jack practically yelled, making all of them look around as they stepped onto the sidewalk.
“Let’s just go to lunch and create a plan, okay?” Daniel said, trying to make the two calm down before the blew the mission.
“I volunteer to leave the party early.” Y/N mumbled as they all looked down the streets before walking across the road to the diner.
“We can talk about it at lunch.” Peggy said through clenched teeth as Jack opened the door for them.
“I wasn’t looking at your breasts.” Jack whispered as they walked in together.
“Oh, look. Mistletoe.” Peggy said, looking up. Daniel smiled, put his arms around her, and kissed her quickly. Jack and Y/N both looked up, eyes wide as they noticed that they had stopped under the mistletoe.
“No way.” Y/N said, trying to walk away. Jack grabbed her arm once more, bringing her close. She let her hands rest on his biceps, his set high on her back.
“We’re supposed to be married.” He reminded her with a soft smile that didn’t reach his eyes. Y/N nodded, letting Jack lean in to kiss her. Just as their lips were about to meet, she twisted her head, letting his lips graze her cheek.
“Maybe you should stop sexualizing me under the pretense that I’m your wife.” She said into his ear. His hold on her tightened, his mouth moving to her ear.
“I wasn’t looking at your breasts. I promise.” He whispered, and she fought the chills that came through her body at his breath fanning over her neck.
“Promise?” She asked, pulling back to look at his face. She didn’t think Jack would be the type to lie about that, and she admitted that she had been a little harsh and didn’t want to hear Jack’s side. He nodded, leaning in slowly again.
“You still aren’t getting that kiss.”
~
“You and Jack seem to be getting along a lot better.” Peggy said. They were in her and Daniel’s room, the boys in Y/N and Jack’s room getting ready for the party.
“It was just a misunderstanding.” Y/N told her, trying not to smile at the way she had woken up this morning. Jack had been holding her close, their bodies pressed together. It was crazy to think about, that she would have thrown up at the thought a couple days ago and now she couldn’t wait until the next night.
“That instance or your whole relationship?” Peggy asked with a knowing smile, making Y/N blush. “I can see the way you look at each other,”
“It’s a mission, Peg.” Y/N told her, shaking her head. “Plus, it’s only been a couple days. Who knows what will happen with Jack and I after this.” She said, making her friend shake her head.
“We’ll see what happens tonight.” Peggy suggested, going back to doing her makeup. Y/N was taking out her pinned curls, spraying them before going to her dress, dancing slightly to the music playing on the record. She pulled the beautiful green dress on, the one she had picked from the limited amount of clothing the SSR had for missions. Peggy had picked a red one - because they were going for tacky. The boys would be wearing the matching ties and suspenders, hoping the corniness would make them seem less like targets. As Peggy slipped into her dress, Y/N checked her bag, making sure her pistol was in there. She snapped it shut, checking herself in the small mirror along with Peggy.
“We look great.” Peggy said, smiling as she went over to turn the record player off. The two slipped their high heels on before walking out, taking a deep breath. This was the real part of their mission, the part they had to get right. Jack and Y/N would be the ones going to get the file on the top floor, playing the part of drunken lovers if they were caught.
When the two stepped into the lobby, Y/N heart began to race. There were so many people, dancing to the Christmas music blasting through the room.
“Where are they?” Y/N asked, looking around.
“Behind you.” Jack’s voice made her jump, and she smiled as she turned around. Daniel and Jack were each holding two drinks, smiling at the girls. Jack handed Y/N her drink. Daniel handing Peggy her’s. She smiled as she took a sip, looking around again.
“It’s gonna be fine, Y/N.” Daniel said, noticing her worried look.
“I just want to get this over with.” She mumbled, Jack barely hearing her over the music.
“I know,” Jack grabbed her hand, smiling. “Let’s just dance.” He twirled her around by the hand, smiling as she giggled a bit, trying not to spill her drink.
“I suck at dancing!” She complained, still smiling.
“That’s what makes it so fun!” He watched her laugh once more as he spun her around again while taking a drink of the mixed drink in his hands.
“Heads up, Barlowe just made his appearance.” Daniel told them, causing all of them turn and see the man of the hour walking into the lobby. Everyone flooded towards him, and Jack and Y/N knew this was their chance. They nodded to Peggy and Daniel before leaving.
“This worked out in your favor.” Jack said as they made their way to the stairwell.
“Parties just are not my scene.” She told him, smiling as he opened the door for her.
“Yeah well,” Jack trailed off as they climbed the stairs. They had almost made it to the fourth level when they heard a door open. Y/N moved to open the third floor door, pulling Jack with her. They stopped int the doorway, looking around. Y/N didn’t see anyone, just listening to the people talk and make their way down the stairs. She was still looking when Jack began to laugh. She turned to glare at him before noticing he was looking up. She looked up too, head stuck when she realized they were under mistletoe.
“Dammit.” Y/N whispered, but a smile was stuck on her face.
“Don’t worry, I’ll let you off with a kiss on the cheek.” Jack told her, turning to put his hands on her lower back. Y/N put her own on his shoulders, a smirk gracing her face.
“That’s not how mistletoe works.” She whispered, leaning forward so he could place her lips on his. He hovered over hers’ for a second, and she let her eyes flutter closed.
“Well, we can’t disobey the rules of mistletoe, then.” He smiled, one of his hands moving to her cheek before connecting their lips.

Change, for me
Pairing: Jack Thompson x reader
Warnings: fluff, little angst, misogyny,
Summary: It’s never too late to Change Apologize Forgive Love
I’m in a Jack Thompson mood and I can’t help it
Tumblr media
You and Jack didn’t get along per say. He was always underestimating you and making sexist remarks. He and his smug smile got on your last nerve. What blew you to the edge was when he had the audacity to ask you out. “Really Thompson?” You quipped, “you ridicule everything I do, and always underestimate me, and NOW you want me to go on a date with you! Unbelievable Thomson! If you want me to even think about saying yes to you, maybe start by being nicer, and treating me as your equal.” Jack stood, mouth gapping open, “I- I” you walked away before he could gather his wits.
Over the next few weeks, Jack was trying to take your words to heart and be nicer. His first order of business was to apologize to you. “Agent L/N, I’d like to apologize for any actions in the past that may have harmed or offended you, I’m working towards changing for the better.” He then went and did the same to Peggy, you were surprised he’d actually listened to your words.
After Jack walked away from Peggy she walked over to you. “Well, Y/N, I’m impressed, what’d you do to him?” You chuckled, “well, I told him that if he wants to be sweet on me he’ll have to be nicer, and more respectful. It’s never to late to change and apologize.”
After a few more weeks of Thompson actually respecting you, he asked you out again. “Y/N, you, me Saturday night, dance hall?” “Hmm, promise to continue being respectful, then I’d love to.” He quickly promised and walked away with a huge grin on his face. When further poked by Sousa for information, he spilled what had happened, and it was already all over the office, “Thompson’s date with L/N.”
~one year later~
“Come on Jack! We’re gonna be late to work!” “Doll, Y/N, I’m the chief now, it’s fine.” “Jack Walter Thompson! If you don’t get your butt out the door this instant, I’ll walk myself to work and I won’t be back for our date tonight.” Hearing his middle name, Jack raced out the door to the car. “Thank you,” you gave him a kiss and he started the car.
You were both in a meeting at work when a mission was called in, a very dangerous one. Of course, it required a female agent, and with Peggy being out in LA for a while, it fell to you. Jack of course was nervous, he trusted you, and believed in you, but he still didn’t like you putting your life at risk.
“Doll, be safe please, you know what, maybe this can wait till Peggy gets back, or we can call someone from the Washington DC branch, they’ve got a woman I think,” he rambled. “Now, Chief Thompson, are you underestimating my skills again? I’ll be perfectly fine thank you very much. If you wanted some little house wide that’ll sit around all day, you picked the wrong lady.” You we’re a little snappy, a little upset at his implication that you couldn’t do it. “Oh no, doll, I know you can do it, I just, I, I don’t like you putting your life at risk.” Now you were getting upset, that hypocrite!
“Jack! You and your hypocrisy! You put your life at risk every day as well, you don’t think that hurts me too! You don’t think that I hate seeing my man putting his life at risk too?” You felt tears in your eyes, Jack could see it too. “Y/N, doll, god, I’m so sorry. I just,” he sighed, “I hate seeing the woman I love in danger, hate knowing I just have to sit back and watch, scared you’ll get hurt and it’ll be my fault cause I sent you on that mission.” You stood shocked, taking in that he’d just said the L word, you guys hadn’t said that yet. You pulled him into a hug. “I love you too Jack, I love you too. I’ll be safe, I’ll always come home to you, promise.”

Summary: Jack Thompson and Y/N are undercover at a gala, looking for Vernon Masters. He's not there, but they might just find someone (or two someones) worse, especially since Y/N has a giant secret crush on Jack Thompson and is in the middle of pretending to be his girlfriend for their jobs.

Category: Fluff, little bit of angst?
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
I sighed dreamily as I stared up into the eyes of none other than Jack Thompson, Chief of the New York SSR and my boss. His arms wrapped securely around my waist as we swayed back and forth together on the dance floor, taking in the soft music and blocking out everything in the world around us as we got completely lost in each other.
Or at least, that's what we wanted everyone around us to think.
The illusion was slightly ruined for Jack and I who could hear Peggy and Daniel's voices crackling over the comms in our ears. We were currently in the middle of an undercover operation for the SSR at a fancy gala event, and Jack and I were pretending to be happily dating, in love, run of the mill civilians.
"Can you see anyone we've tied to Vernon Masters?" demanded Peggy, her voice crackling over the comm device. Jack leaned in like he was whispering something in my ear, using it as cover to respond to Peggy.
"For the fifth time, Marge, no. He's not here and neither are his cronies."
I heard Peggy's huff of irritation on the other end of line (for Jack's nickname for her as much as for the fact we'd come to a mission dead end), but I couldn't entirely focus on it with Jack so close to me like this.
I'd had a crush on him for a while now, one which had only grown as he'd become a better person who trusted me and Peggy as agents and chose the right side over the side that got him power and recognition. Now, I was borderline pining for him, to the point that both Peggy and Daniel had noticed and individually called me on it. I'd given them both hell while they were mooning over each other and doing nothing about it for the better part of two years, though, so I guess I was due some payback.
Still, in this moment, it was more than a little inconvenient. Even though it seemed pretty clear that Vernon Masters and his cronies weren't here, and that we'd somehow been led on a wild goose chase, I'd learned over and over again that getting distracted for even a second on the simplest of missions could get you killed.
Jack's hands suddenly tightened around my waist and his whole body tensed even as he continued to look over my shoulder, and I got the distinct feeling that I might be about to re-learn that lesson yet again.
"Jack? What is it?" I asked, leaning in to whisper in his ear and trying to keep up a calm facade. Peggy and Daniel couldn't see Jack's face, but they could tell from the tone in my voice that something was wrong.
"Is it Masters?" asked Daniel over the comms.
"No," Jack ground out, sounding like it was something far, far worse than Vernon Masters. "He's not here, and we need to bail out of this mission right now."
"Why?" I asked, jumping in before Peggy or Daniel could. I tried to turn us on the dance floor so I could catch sight of whatever he was looking at, but he whirled me away further into the crowd before I could. I pulled back and away from him just enough to look him in the eye. "Jack, what's wrong?"
"Nothing. But our cover's at high risk of getting blown if we don't leave, so we need to go."
I raised an eyebrow, and I heard Peggy and Daniel start protesting and asking questions over the comms. Jack seemed seriously stressed though, so after making one last scan of the room to make sure I really didn't see anything to do with Vernon Masters (or Dottie Underwood, or any of our many other enemies), I snagged Jack's comm-disguised-as-an-ascot out of his jacket pocket and stuffed it into my handbag.
"We're on our way out shortly, stand by," I said to Peggy and Daniel, then gave the flower pinned to my dress the same treatment as Jack's secret comm device. Once we had a little bit of privacy from our friends, I grabbed Jack's arm and met his eyes. "Jack, what's going on? I'm your partner, at least for this mission, and your friend. You can tell me."
He sighed heavily through his nose, his eyes darting up to scan the room again before at last landing back on me. He seemed to be debating something mentally, then finally, I saw his jaw lock and determination come into his eyes.
"My parents just walked into the room."
I couldn't stop my mouth from dropping open and my eyes going wide. Jack almost never talked about his parents, so the little I knew came from conversations about highly-connected people who, in some way or another, knew the Thompsons. Now, they were in the same room as us while I was pretending to be Jack's very serious long-term girlfriend.
"Yeah, that look on your face? That's exactly why we need to go," he said, taking my hand in his and at last leading me off the dancefloor. "Masters obviously isn't here anyway, so-"
"Jack!"
Jack's grip on my hand tightened and I saw him grimace as a voice called from behind us. His shoulders tensed, and I swore I could see him mentally calculating whether it'd be worth it to ignore his mother's voice and just run for the door. Apparently he decided the answer was no, because after another second he turned around, a ridiculously fake smile plastered to his face. He wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me tighter to his side as we faced his parents, so apparently we were going to try to keep up our covers as long as possible.
"Mom. Dad." His voice was as strained as his smile, and I kept sneaking looks at the pained expression on his face as his parents made their way over to us.
Jack definitely had the family resemblance, although his father's hair had grayed and the lines of his face were a little harsher. His mother had darker brunette hair, but there was no doubt Jack had her eyes and mouth.
Although, after two seconds of watching Jack's father stand with his shoulders back and his chin high as he surveyed us, it didn't take me long to see where Jack got some of his more irritating traits.
"We didn't know you were going to be here," said his dad, not bothering to say hi as he looked us up and down again.
"Likewise, Dad."
"So, who's this?" asked his mom, looking to me with a slightly reserved smile as she broke the tension. I couldn't tell if she actually wanted to know, or if she just wanted to change the subject.
"This is Y/N," said Jack, hesitating for half a second before he continued. "My girlfriend."
I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't leap in my chest at his words. I tried not to let it show in my expression, but I wasn't sure I'd been totally convincing.
"I see," said his mother, a polite smile forced onto her face. My stomach sank as I realized she wasn't particularly happy with this situation, and fell even farther when I saw a frown on his dad's face.
"And how exactly did the two of you meet?"
Jack hesitated again, then continued with the story we'd made up for our covers.
"I was at a gala for work. Her father holds a high position in the military, so she was there too, with him. We met, and we hit it off."
I forced a smile onto my own face, leaning into Jack a bit even though we were both tense as a pulled muscle. Of all the times I'd let myself imagine Jack calling me his girlfriend and maybe introducing me to his family (which I hadn't done often), it had never gone anything like this.
"Well, I can't believe you never told us about her, Jack," said his mother, her smile seeming more genuine now. "It's wonderful to see that you've found a nice, respectable young lady to spend your time with, for once."
My eyebrows shot all the way up my forehead, and I felt Jack's grip tighten to almost uncomfortable levels around my waist. His other hand was a fist at his side, but before I could jump in and say anything, his father continued his mother's train of thought.
"It's a wonder a woman of any kind of respectable family would give you the time of day after all the disappointments you've been bringing home lately. You had a senator congratulating you last year, and now you've completely alienated one of my long-time friends and all his connections."
Jack's breathing became labored next to me, and I could feel the stress radiating off of him in waves. I frowned, the scowl only deepening as I caught Jack's mother staring at the floor and shaking her head and his father staring him down with a disapproving scowl.
"Hold on," I said, finally finding my voice after the past few minutes of shock. "Are you talking about Vernon Masters?"
"Of course I am," his dad responded. I opened my mouth to see if he happened to remember that Vernon Masters had recently fallen from public grace (although most of the public wasn't aware of the extent of it, and that he was also a wanted criminal), but he pressed on before I could, directing his comments at Jack more than me. "Not only that, but he had an inquiry into his leadership at the SSR, the first Chief ever to have that questionable of a tenure. Now, he's siding with a bunch of righteous fools who have no idea what they're talking about and are headed for the gutter, and he's going to wind up there with them, dragging us and the family name down, too."
Jack was shaking, and to my surprise, it seemed to be from a turmoil of upset emotions rather than anger. His father's words had an impact on him, and so did his mother's clear agreement with his father, but I didn't wait for any of them to sort out the situation, because I was shaking too. But with rage.
"You listen to me," I hissed, keeping my voice low to avoid throwing a scene but letting every single word drip with venom as I stared down Jack's parents. "Jack Thompson is one of the best men I know. He's sweet and wonderful and smart and strong and yeah, I want to kill him on a semi-regular basis, and there's some things I'm still mad at him for. But in the past year since that senator shook his hand, the wrong hand, he's been doing an absolutely fantastic job growing and leading and standing up for what's right, and it's been amazing to watch him become this wonderful man and leader. And if you disagree, you can go straight to hell, you absolute bastards."
All three Thompsons stared at me in shock, but I didn't care one bit. The anger still boiled in the pit of my stomach, and I knew if I stayed here long enough to get into an argument with Jack's dad, I'd probably just end up hitting him. So, I took Jack's hand from around my waist, and used it to pull him towards the exit.
"Come on, Jack, let's go. We don't need people who aren't going to appreciate you for the man you are now."
I didn't look back once as I tugged Jack out of the ballroom, people jumping out of my way to clear us a path at the fury of my gaze. Not completely the unnoticed exit we'd been shooting for, but I really didn't care anymore.
Once we got outside, we were immediately met by Peggy and Daniel, who'd decided to come in after a few minutes of us being off comms. I quickly brushed them off, since Jack was apparently too stunned to do so, telling them we were fine without filling in any details. I could see they had a thousand more questions they wanted to ask us, but before they got the chance, I brushed past them and pulled Jack towards our car. We'd arrived separately from our fellow agents for the sake of our cover, and now we were going to leave and get a little space from everyone, our friends included.
I was still fuming as I sank into the passenger seat, Jack sliding cautiously into the driver's seat. He kept glancing at me out of the corner of his eye as he started the car, but I stared straight ahead, trying to get a hold of the whirlwind of emotions warring in my chest.
I was furious at Jack's parents and the things they'd said to him. But now that we were out of there, I was also petrified by the realization I'd basically just confessed my love for Jack, despite a year and a half of trying to hide it. After a few moments of silence as Jack carefully pulled out of the parking lot, leaving Peggy and Daniel behind us, I sighed. I couldn't just ignore the situation, and the longer I waited to address it, the harder it would be.
"Listen, Jack, I'm sorry if that was weird," I started, staring straight ahead and refusing to look at him. "I just... I couldn't take what they were saying to you, and I saw the way it was hitting you, and I just... anyway, I'm sorry."
Jack didn't say anything for a few seconds, and I swear I was on the verge of a heart attack when he at last glanced over at me and spoke.
"Did you mean what you said in there?"
Of all the responses, that definitely wasn't one I was expecting. Jack kept glancing at me, only taking his eyes off the road for a fraction of a second, and I could feel a nervous energy radiating off of him that was nothing like the confidence he usually projected.
"Jack... of course I meant it. I don't think I could've ad-libbed something fake like that if I'd tried, despite my training as an agent."
"You swore," he snorted, at last sounding a little more relaxed. I was just about the only person in the office who didn't swear at least semi-regularly, but facing down Jack's dad, it just came out naturally.
"Yeah, well, your parents are assholes. I guess it brought something out of me," I grumbled. Jack looked over at me again, this time with a grin on his face. For the first time since he'd caught sight of his parents, the familiar, swaggering, ridiculous Jack Thompson that I loved so much was starting to come back.
"So... you think I'm sweet and wonderful?"
I groaned and covered my face, sinking low in my seat. My face was on fire, and I knew if Jack caught sight of my expression, that embarrassment would be reflected in it.
Jack chuckled, and a second later I felt the car roll to a stop. I risked a peek through my fingers to see that we'd pulled off on a side road, and now Jack had turned in his seat to face me. As soon as we made eye contact, I went back to completely covering my face and looked away from him.
"You know, if I didn't know better, Agent Y/L/N, I'd say it seems like you have a crush on me."
"Oh my God," I whined, turning even further away from Jack. I heard him chuckle, then felt his hands gently grip my wrists and tug them away from my face. I just stared at him, totally done with this night and this interaction. My expression apparently only made him happier, as the cheeky smile on his face grew.
"You do, don't you?"
"Shut up, Jack, alright?" I said, looking away from him and out the window and wishing to be anywhere else. "I already get enough crap about it from Peggy and Daniel."
"Wow, 'crap'? Who are you turning into?"
I yanked one of my wrists out of his hand and smacked him in the shoulder, unable to keep a smile off my face despite myself. I huffed a long sigh, mentally trying to figure out how to best get past this situation so Jack and I could keep working together despite my semi-admission, but then he spoke, his voice low and soft and more sincere than I usually heard it.
"I've got a thing for you too, you know. I have for a long time. I just never thought you'd feel the same way."
My attention snapped back to Jack, my eyes searching his face for any hint of teasing or a joke or anything else. I found nothing but plain, open honesty.
"I wasn't... great to you or Peggy when either of you first joined the agency," he continued. "I figured I'd pretty much lost my shot from then on, even if you've been a little more willing to spend time with me lately."
"Jack..." I whispered, my heart hammering in my chest. I reached out and softly cupped his cheek in my hand, and he leaned into my touch, staring at me like he couldn't quite believe I was real. "I've had a thing for you for a while, but... you've grown a lot lately. I meant what I said to your dad, you're somebody who's strong and stands up for what's right. And I also meant what I said about the few things I'm still a little mad about... you definitely made some mistakes in the past year, starting with that Senator after we dealt with Ivchenko and ending with Vernon Masters. But I've gotten to watch you grow and wake up to the bullshit around us and make different choices, and honestly, it's just made me fall harder."
A smile tugged at the corner of Jack's mouth. "Are you sure?"
"Completely."
Jack nodded, taking my hand in his and slowly pulling me closer to him. I tried to stay calm as one arm wrapped around my waist, over the console of the car, and his other hand dropped mine to tilt up my chin instead.
"Can I kiss you, Y/N?"
"Hell yes."
Jack laughed, and I beamed back at him as he at last closed the distance between us for a long-awaited, lingering kiss. We stayed like that for a few minutes, locked in each others' embrace, until finally we broke apart, both breathless but with gigantic smiles on our faces.
"You know, we're about to be working extra hours since we didn't find Vernon at this thing," started Jack, looking at me with a gleam in his eye, "but do you think there's any chance of carving out a little time in the schedule for me to take you on a real date?"
I beamed back at him, my heart exploding in my chest, this time from happiness rather than anger or embarrassment.
"Absolutely."
"Good. How about tomorrow? I'll pick you up from work at eight," he said, moving to start the car again. I leaned back in my seat happily, reaching over the console to grab his hand once we started rolling again.
"How are you going to pick me up from a place we'll both be at all day?"
He shrugged. "I'll find a way. So how about it, sweetheart?"
I grinned. "As long as you don't take me to that terrible place you recommended to Peggy and Daniel last month."
"Hey now. That place is fantastic, they just have awful taste."
"Mhm. Deal or no deal, Thompson?"
"Fine, deal." I squeezed Jack's hand, unable to stop the happy gesture as we cruised down the street together in companionable silence. After a few seconds, however, Jack spoke up again. "So does this mean you're gonna swear all the time now? Because I made a bet with Sousa-"
"No! It was a heat of the moment thing, it's not happening again."
"...What if I gave you a script to say to Sousa? Just a couple words?"
"No shot, Jack! You're just going to have to take the loss to Daniel."
Jack kept teasing me, trying to cajole me into helping him win his bet with Daniel, but I just laughed and turned him down. We kept joking and talking all the way back into town, until he dropped me off at home and walked me to the door, giving me a goodnight kiss like we'd just come back from a perfect first date. Which, I guess for SSR Agents, we kind of had.
We hadn't found Vernon Masters tonight, or any of his cronies, and I'd been about two seconds from physically assaulting my long-time crush's father. But Jack and I were going on a date tomorrow, and we had plenty of time to figure out all the other stuff, together. So as far as I was concerned, tonight had been an absolutely amazing night.

Over The Moon (Tales From The SSR)
Tumblr media
Summary: It’s Valentine’s Day in the West Coast SSR and love is in the air for Daniel and Peggy, who spend the day watching their friends’ fledgling romance flourish and looking back on the beginnings of their own relationship.
Pairing: Peggy Carter X Daniel Sousa, Jack Thompson X Reader
Word Count: 1.4k
Warning/Disclaimers: None
A/N: Hi guys! I’m sorry it’s taken so long for this little one-shot to come out (I had a different one planned but after rewriting it twice, I scrapped it and decided to work on this one) but today, we’re gonna revisit Daniel and Peggy’s relationship from our favorite chief’s POV! Thank you for reading, I hope you all enjoy!
Over The Moon February 1948 West Coast Strategic Scientific Reserve, Los Angeles (Previous One-Shot)
“Aw, Peg, you shouldn’t have…”
Peggy simply shrugged her shoulders and smiled as Daniel reverently admired the signed baseball he’d just unwrapped. “It was no trouble at all, Daniel! Mr. Jarvis and I were at one of Howard’s silly parties and we just so happened to run into Mr. Robinson there, along with six of his fellow teammates from the Brooklyn Dodgers. I knew how much you liked the team, so I took advantage of the golden opportunity before me in the name of romance and voilà.”
Daniel grinned and shook his head in loving exasperation, knowing perfectly well that his amazing girlfriend had conned Howard Stark into pulling some strings and getting half the Brooklyn Dodgers to sign a baseball just for him. But there’s not a chance in hell that she’d ever admit to asking Stark for help, he thought with an inward chuckle as he crumpled the heart-patterned wrapping paper into a ball and tossed it into the waste basket across the office, and there’s not a chance in hell that I’ll ever question a ball signed by one of the best players in Major League Baseball. “It’s a very thoughtful gift, honey, definitely the best Valentine’s Day gift I’ve ever received. Thank you.” Daniel leaned in and captured her lips in a sweet kiss, lightly chuckling in embarrassment once they finally separated. “Now I sorta feel like a chump for just getting you that perfume…”
“You shouldn’t, darling; just because I enjoy cleaning and assembling weapons in my spare time doesn’t mean I don’t like smelling good while doing so.” Peggy smiled triumphantly as he laughed. “You took the time to browse my vanity, locate my perfume bottles and use them to determine which of the new perfumes at Bullock’s that I’d be the fondest of. I promise, it was just as thoughtful of a gift as a baseball signed by some of your all-time favorite players.”
A triumphant shout interrupted their next near-kiss, and they both looked out the office windows into the bullpen to see an elated Jack punch the air and scribble something down on a notepad. Sitting at the desk across from him, (Y/N) smiled to herself as she adjusted the vase full of baby-pink roses placed beside her morning cup of tea and continued typing out a case report on her typewriter. Daniel, sensing that there was something unusual going on between his top two agents, furrowed his brow in confusion and turned back to face his girlfriend. “What’s all that about?”
“Oh, (Y/N) thought it would be sweet to write a Valentine’s Day card entirely in code and give it to Jack along with his gift.” The office door was closed but Peggy lowered her voice all the same. “Don’t tell either of them that I said anything, but apparently our dear Jack mentioned to (Y/N) that he really wanted a photograph of her so that he could have something beautiful to brighten up his desk. So, she went down to the portrait studio last week and had one taken to give to him today.”
Sure enough, when Daniel looked back out at the bullpen, he spotted the framed black-and-white photograph of the agency’s top codebreaker and smiled at how carefully the ex-chief propped it against his desk lamp so that he could glance up at it while he decoded. “You don’t say? Are we one-hundred-percent certain she’s dating our Jack Thompson and not some sort of sappy doppelgänger who’s seen one too many Cary Grant flicks?”
Peggy chuckled as she leaned back against his desk. “It is a little hard to believe that the Jack Thompson currently hard at work decoding a declaration of love is the same one I once threatened to shoot. What’s even harder to believe, though, is that we never realized how obviously over the moon they were for one another; Thompson was forced to spell it out for us over the phone when he decided to step down as Chief and relocate to Los Angeles, remember?”
“When you think about it, it’s not really that surprising.” Daniel smirked a little at his girlfriend’s incredulous frown. “C’mon, Peg, how long did it take for us to get our heads out of our asses and finally admit that we were over the moon for each other?”
A light pink blush appeared in Peggy’s cheeks and he could practically see her recalling all those months of quiet pining and longing stares as she fought the smile that was threatening to form on her cherry-red lips. “Perhaps you have a point there, Daniel. Out of curiosity, when was it that you started to have feelings for me?”
“The exact moment? I’m not really sure, but I do know when I realized that I saw you as more than my coworker.” Daniel hung his crutch on its hook and sat down in his desk’s chair. “It wasn’t very long after I joined the SSR and I was having a real bad day that day; I slipped on the steps outside and that caused me to be late, Dooley handed one of my cases over to Thompson, and Krzeminski wouldn’t stop cracking jokes about my leg. But then you came around with the lunch orders and there was a chocolate-chip cookie I definitely didn’t order hidden inside my take-out box; that cookie turned a bad day into an okay one…well, that and when Krzeminski’s desk drawers mysteriously jammed and he fell on his ass trying to pry them open.” They laughed and Daniel smiled up at Peggy as he continued. “That’s when I knew that there was someone in my corner at the SSR, someone who didn’t pity me but who understood better than most anyone what it felt like to be up against the entire world.”
With a gentle smile on her face, Peggy slid down from the desk and took a seat on his lap, one of her arms resting across his shoulders while the other fiddled with the collar of his aloha shirt. “I’d say that I was only doing what anyone else would, but we both know what manner of agents we were working alongside back in New York.”
“You’ve got that right. So, when did you know that you had a thing for me?”
His girlfriend’s smile morphed into something coyer. “All right, I’ll tell you…over dinner tonight.” Daniel groaned in disappointment while she merely chuckled at his dramatics. “Seriously, we really should try and get some sort of work done today, darling; we have half a dozen cases to sign off on, three witnesses to interview for the Olsen case and-oh, for heaven’s sake!”
Daniel followed Peggy’s incredulous eye-line to see Jack and (Y/N) standing by the former’s tidy desk; the codebreaker was whispering something into the agent’s ear and judging by the lopsided grin beginning to form on his lips, it had absolutely nothing to do with work. While a pink-faced Daniel and a smirking Peggy watched, (Y/N) took Jack’s hand in hers and cast a furtive glance around the bullpen before pulling him out into the hall. “…What’re the odds that they’re headed into the supply closet for more typewriter ribbon?”
“About as good as Rose finally joining Samberly for a night on the town,” Peggy quipped, her brown eyes alight with playfulness as she expectantly looked down at him. “So, shall we set a good example for the others and get back to work?”
After pretending to ponder his girlfriend’s question, Daniel suddenly used his good leg to push his rolling desk chair across the office, grinning as Peggy giggled at the unexpected movement and tightened her arm around his shoulders; he grabbed the cord of his window’s Venetian blinds and tugged them closed before moving his hand to cradle the back of Peggy’s neck. “Maybe later. We can’t let Jack and (Y/N) have all the fun, can we, Agent Carter?”
Peggy chuckled and shook her head as her fingers carded through his hair. “We certainly can’t, Chief Sousa.”
Their lips met in a slow and passionate kiss and Daniel sighed at the pleasant sensation of his girlfriend’s crimson nails gently scraping against his scalp, tightening his hold on her and smiling against her red-hued lips as he thanked his lucky stars that he’d finally achieved the honor of being Peggy Carter’s Valentine.

undercover feelings
Tumblr media
pairing: jack thompson x reader (requested by: @rubesque)
summary: you and jack don't like each other in the slightest. but when an undercover mission throws the two of you together, what will become of your relationship? (aka - undercover enemies to lovers)
warnings: minor violence
words: 3.4k (not even sorry)
a/n: let me just start by saying, I know my action sequences aren’t the best, but I'm trying to get better. that said, I absolutely adored writing this story, and I hope everyone enjoys it! a lot of thought went into it, so please please let me know what you think!
oOoOo
As you strode towards Chief Dooley’s office, you noticed Jack coming up behind you out of the corner of your eye. Rolling your shoulders back, you tried to ignore his presence even as he was merely steps behind you, almost purposefully trying to catch the back of your heel. Right as you raised your hand to wrap your knuckles against the Chief’s office door, you let out a frustrated sigh.
“Is there something I can help you with?” you spit out, spinning around to face Jack, wishing you could wipe that smug smirk off his face.
“Never in a thousand years, y/l/n. It seems you’re in my way.” he said, trying to step around you and knock on the door himself.
Rolling your eyes, you blocked the door with your body. “Look, I know you think your daily suck-up sessions with the Chief will get you a promotion, but I was personally asked by Chief Dooley to meet with him, so move along.” you told Jack proudly, ready to see his anger bubble over.
To your surprise, Jack’s grin simply widened as he leaned in. “Me too, sweetheart.” he whispered, leaving you speechless, and pushing past you to knock on the door.
Collecting yourself, you quickly entered the office first, standing in front of the Chief’s desk with your hands behind your back. Every so often, your eyes flitted over to Jack, wondering what the Chief could possibly want with the both of you. It was no secret to any agent in the SSR that you and Jack had a strained relationship to say the least. From your first day, Jack had mistaken you as a secretary, thus beginning a long hate-hate relationship. Even to this day, Jack was one of the most pig-headed men you had the displeasure of knowing.
“Alright, I’ll get straight to the point. I’m sending the two of you on an undercover mission to retrieve sensitive, government information.” Chief Dooley explained. “The most opportune time to retrieve it will be during the American Gala in Washington D.C. hosted by a Mr. Mark Williams. The two of you will pose as husband and wife –“
“That’s a real funny joke, Chief.” Jack interrupted, looking shocked at the prospect of going undercover with you.
“Oh, please, Thompson. You’d be lucky if you could ever convince me to marry you.” you shot back.
“I’d rather go undercover as husband and wife with Krzeminski.”
Before you could move to smack Jack’s arm or throw another insult his way, Chief Dooley stood up, slamming his hands on his desk. “Enough! It’s like dealing with a couple of damn toddlers.” he scolded, instantly causing a wave of shame to wash over you and Jack. “Now, can the two of you act like the federal agents you are, or do I need to find two other agents?” he asked, staring both of you down.
“No, sir.” you mumbled, hearing a similar sentiment leave Jack’s lips.
There was a moment of awkward silence before Chief Dooley sat back down. “Now, as I was saying. The two of you are scheduled to leave in two days, and here are files with all you need to know on the target and your responsibilities.” he continued.
The moment you were dismissed, you stormed out of the Chief’s office and made your way back to your desk. Picking up the nearest piece of paperwork, you stared at the words for a moment before shoving it to the side, letting out a frustrated sigh.
“Everything all right?” Peggy asked, coming up behind you and setting a mug of coffee down on your desk.
“Chief Dooley is sending me on an undercover mission – with Thompson.” you explained, running your hands down your face.
Peggy looked amused by your so-called bad news and shook her head at your oblivious nature. “Perhaps, it will give you the opportunity to recognize your feelings for Agent Thompson.” she suggested casually.
“Feelings?” you nearly shrieked. “The only feeling I have for Agent Thompson is the feeling of dread every time I see him.” you argued.
“If you say so, dear.” Peggy placated as she walked away.
oOoOo
The entire plane ride to D.C. was filled with tense silence as you poured over the case file the entire time. The only noise that came from Jack was the tapping of his foot against the floor and his pen against the table.
“Do you have to do that?” you finally snapped, reaching forward to snatch the pen out of his hand.
Holding his up in mock surrender, Jack chuckled. “Woah, sweetheart, you might want to be a bit nicer considering we are married and all.” he teased.
“Listen,” you started, voice low and serious. “I know that you joke around and don’t always take everything seriously, but this mission is important to me. You have no idea how hard it is working in that office as a woman, and this mission is my chance to prove myself. I will not have it be ruined by the likes of you.”
For once, Jack had no quick remark to offer, instead he was simply stunned by your speech. Silently admitting defeat, Jack conceded to your wishes. “Alright, I’m sorry, y/l/n.”
You were slightly taken aback by how easy that had been. Perhaps you didn’t give Jack enough credit. “Thank you.” you responded, turning back to your files.
The rest of the flight followed in relative silence, Jack or you only speaking when you had questions or needed clarification from the files. It didn’t pass your mind the subtle looks Jack threw your way, but you ignored them, focused on the task at hand. If he had something to say, he could say it. However, the moment the plane landed, you were whisked away to your separate hotel rooms to prepare for the gala, watching Jack walk away.
oOoOo
It was only when Jack heard the clack of your heels against the marble stairs that he turned around and froze, watching your descent. The y/f/c dress you had donned flattered your figure in every sense, and Jack swore you were an angel in that moment. He suddenly felt aware of the way his breath had quickened, and the way his hands shook the tiniest bit from the nerves. So lost in his own mind, Jack didn’t even notice he had yet to take his eyes off of you.
“Is there something on me?” you asked, suddenly feeling very bashful from Jack’s gaze.
“No, no it’s just – uh – I mean,” Jack stuttered, running a hand through his perfectly gelled hair. “you clean up nice, y/l/n.”
“Not too bad yourself there either, Thompson.” you teased, flashing Jack a dazzling smile.
It was true that Jack looked absolutely dashing in his suit, making your knees just a bit week as you had walked down to meet him. His compliment sent a flutter through your chest, and you were brought back to Peggy’s comment about feelings. Perhaps, deep down, all the back-and-forth bickering had simply been a disguise for something else. But you couldn’t let yourself think about that now, not when you had a mission to complete.
Right as you were about to walk into the ballroom, Jack grabbed your wrist gently, stopping you in your tracks. Before you could question his action, he held up his hand and wiggled his finger, a metal band gleaming in the low light. “Now what kind of husband would I be if didn’t give you a ring?” he asked before pulling a small box out of his jacket pocket and producing a beautiful, sparkling engagement ring.
Carefully, Jack lifted your left hand and slid the cool metal over your ring finger until the diamond rested perfectly against your skin. It was difficult to fight the spark of energy when Jack grabbed your hand and the way he gently rubbed his thumb over the back of your hand.
“There.” he whispered, staring into your y/e/c eyes, a soft smile replacing that smirk that typically resided on his lips.
The two of you stood in the foyer for a moment, lost in the other’s gaze until other couples around you laughed and chatted on their way into the ballroom, breaking the spell. Ever the gentleman, Jack offered his arm, which you accepted, leading you both into the belly of the beast. Walking into said ballroom was breathtaking, the entire room being decorated from floor to ceiling with gold accents; however, you forced yourself to stay focused on the mission at hand.
A quick scan of the room showed you multiple entry/exit points, as well as a good estimate of the security posted throughout the room. Beside you, Jack was doing the same before his eyes widened slightly. Following his line of sight, you noticed your target for the evening, Mark Williams, surrounded by a group of people. While your first instinct was to go straight to the source, you knew that would raise alarms and potentially jeopardize the mission.
“Care for a dance?” Jack asked, having the same idea as you when he noticed Williams leading his wife to the dance floor.
Wordlessly, you allowed Jack to lead you towards the dance floor where he rested a warm, gentle hand on the small of your back while his other hand intertwined with your fingers. A small gasp left your lips from the proximity between you and Jack, and it was difficult to not become intoxicated by his cologne. For a moment, you allowed yourself to admire Jack’s strong jaw, piercing eyes, and the few hairs that had fallen out of place under the golden light the room provided.
The music began to pick up, and you let out a surprised cry of delight as Jack spun you around the floor, selling every bit of the perfectly happy couple. After one such spin, Jack brought you closer and whispered that you had caught the attention of Williams. Glancing over your shoulder, you saw the man staring in your direction.
“Trust me.” you told Jack under your breath before you took the lead and danced the two of you straight into your target. “Oh golly, I am so sorry, sir.” you apologized, feigning innocence. “I’m such a clutz, I don’t know why you bring me to these events, dear.” you said, aiming the second half of your sentence to Jack.
“Lord knows why, sweetie.” Jack responded, quickly catching onto your act. “Sorry again, sir. My wife said it herself – she can be a real clutz.”
Mark Williams flashed a quick smirk, looking your body up and down, seemingly sizing the two of you up. “No harm done, pretty lady. I’m Mark Williams. Mind making it up to me with a dance? That is, if your husband doesn’t mind.” he asked, though both you and Jack knew it was more a command.
“It’s the least I can do.” you giggled, accepting Williams’ hand, and letting him pull you away from Jack just like you thought he would.
Immediately, the band in the corner struck up a slower tune, and Williams placed a hand on your waist and began to awkwardly sway off beat. Unlike Jack’s soft, warm hands, this felt cold and unforgiving, and you forced yourself to swallow back the nausea.
“So, you must be used to all the glamor of these events, huh? Being a powerful man and whatnot.” you flirted, batting your eyelashes to help sell your act.
“You could say that, though they get pretty boring after a while. But having someone like you here helps to pass the time.” Williams said, slipping his hand further down your back.
Humming in response, you used the distraction to subtly reach your hand into Williams’ jacket pocket where you silently cheered when your hand touched a key – which you assumed unlocked his office. Carefully, you slipped it into your own pocket before squeezing William’s bicep with a smile to keep his suspicions down. Before he could slip his hand down any further, you pushed back gently and flashed an apologetic smile.
“Excuse me for a moment.” you purred, slipping away to the nearest hallway, keeping an eye out for Jack. Suddenly, an arm shot out and grabbed your wrist, pulling you further down the hallway. You nearly let out a shout of surprise before you saw that it was Jack.
“Are you done flirting or what?” he hissed, eyes narrowed, and chest puffed out.
Rolling your eyes, you flashed him the key you had slipped into the pocket of your dress. “Didn’t take you for the jealous type, Thompson.” you teased, scanning the doors for Williams’ office.
Once you reached the door, you quickly unlocked his office and ushered Jack in, quietly closing the door behind you and locking it. The office itself was spotless, leaving you no clue as to where the files could be hidden. Wordlessly, you and Jack split up, searching through every nook and cranny in order to complete your mission.
It wasn’t long before a soft “found it” came from Jack’s side of the room. Rushing over, you peered at the document in front of him to confirm that it was the correct document. Joy filled your body when you saw that your mission was a success.
Placing a hand on Jack’s bicep, you beamed at him. “Jack this is amazing, we did it!” you celebrated.
Jack let out a small chuckle, enjoying the way you were so excited. He glanced down at your hand on his arm, then back towards you where he locked his eyes with yours. Some unknown force took over you, causing the two of you to lean in towards each other, lips inching closer. Just as you could feel his warm breath on your face and almost touch his lips, loud rattling and banging came from the two, pulling the two of you apart instantly.
“Williams.” you both whispered, looking for a way out.
An open window caught your eye, and you ripped the file out of Jack’s hand as you pushed him towards said window. “Go, or neither of us are going to make it out of here.” you said through clenched teeth.
Jack hesitated a moment before he ran to climb out of the window, instantly turning around to offer you a helping hand. Right as you jumped out, the office door burst open, and Williams appeared with a half dozen bodyguards. He caught a flash of your dress and noticed the torn apart file cabinet, quickly putting two and two together.
“Shit! Get those two, dead or alive, and bring me back that file!” he shouted, pointing in the direction of your escape
It wasn’t long before bullets whizzed past your head as you and Jack ran through the garden towards the getaway car. Adrenaline pumped through your veins, minimizing the dull ache on the side of your arm you eventually felt. All you could think about was getting yourself and Jack out of there in one piece.
The moment the car came into view, you pushed yourself further and faster, sliding into the passenger seat as Jack started the engine and drove off with a squeal. There were still bullets that banged against the car, but once Jack stepped on the gas and swerved off the beaten road, you finally allowed yourself a breath of relief.
“Please tell me after all that, you still have the damn file.” Jack said, glancing to his side at your crumpled figure.
Slamming a, albeit slightly bent, manilla file folder onto the dashboard, you let out a dry chuckle. “You’re welcome. Maybe, for once, Thompson, you can just admit that I actually know what I’m – shit!” you suddenly groaned, clutching the side of your arm, and pulling away to reveal red, sticky fingers.
Jack looked over once more at your groan of pain and slammed on the breaks the moment he saw blood. “You got shot?” he all but shouted, turning your body so he could see where a bullet had lodged itself into the side of your arm.
“Thank you, Sherlock.” you breathed out, squeezing your eyes shut as Jack poked and prodded the area. “You’re gonna need to dig it out.” you told him after he continued to sit in silence.
“I know!” Jack snapped, before sighing upon seeing your reaction and approaching the situation softer. “I know, I know, I’m sorry.” he said before stepping out of the car and grabbing the first aid box from the trunk.
Jack quickly opened the passenger side of the door and knelt down so he could reach your wound. “This is gonna sting.” Jack whispered before he began to clean the wound with some of the alcohol from the kit, wincing along with you.
Jack felt his heart clench as you gripped his shoulder in pain, biting your lip. It became even worse when he started to remove the bullet from your arm, though there was nothing that he could do. There was silence between you and Jack, leaving Jack to his own devices. Seeing the blood on your hands and having to dig a bullet out of you made Jack feel as though he had been the one to be shot. In fact, he wished he had been to avoid you going through this pain.
“Got it.” Jack finally announced, throwing the bullet to the side and wrapping your arm in gauze.
“Thank you.” you said, letting out one more hiss of pain.
Instead of responding, Jack let his hand linger on your arm as he poured over every inch of your body, trying to determine if you had been injured anywhere else. There was such an intensity in his eyes that you couldn’t believe this was the same man you bickered with on an almost hourly basis. It had to be some kind of trick your eyes were playing on you from the pain.
“There you go, you’ll be alright.” Jack reassured you, tying the final strip of bandage around your arm, his hands lingered gently. “I gotta say, you really know how to give a fella a heart attack, y/n.”
“Oh please, I’m sure you would’ve forgotten all about me and reveled in all the attention you’d receive from the Chief.” you shot back, deflecting any emotions that could make you look weak and vulnerable.
Jack’s face morphed into one of hurt, and you felt guilty at the way his titled head and soft eyes made him look like a lost puppy. “Is that what you really think of me? That I wouldn’t care if you didn’t make it out of this mission?”
“You don’t like me, Jack. And I don’t like you. That’s how we’ve always operated, what else could I have possibly interpreted from that?” you argued, frustrated that he seemed to be dragging this conversation on.
“That’s not true, and you know it, y/n.” Jack countered, taking both of your hands in his grasp. “Both of us know deep down that this enemies act is self-defense, but I know that after tonight, I can’t pretend anymore. And I’m pretty sure you don’t want to either.”
For the second time that night, Jack cupped your cheeks in his hand, and leaned in. His lips hovered over yours for just a moment, giving you the chance to change your mind, but you launched yourself forward and finally kissed Jack Thompson. The kiss was sweet, but passionate, years of pent-up feelings bubbling over the surface. Jack pulled you close to his body while your fingers played with the hair and the nape of his neck. You had never allowed yourself to imagine this moment, but in that moment you knew you could get used to be kissed by Jack for the rest of your life.
Eventually, the two of you pulled away, foreheads leaning against each other, and your breath the only thing that could be heard in the night air. Jack’s thumb brushed against your cheek, and you leaned into his touch, now unable to reject his touch.
“Wow,” you breathed out. “maybe we should bottle our feelings like that again.” you teased.
“No, I don’t want to not be able to kiss you again.” Jack whispered, before he pulled you back in for another kiss, grateful you were safe in his arms, giving him the rest of his life to spend with you, and making Peggy five dollars richer.

X
thank you so much!! your support always means so much to me :) this is a little longer than i said i wanted to make these, but i hope you enjoy it!
words: 568
"Hey, Y/N, I think the chief is single, why don't you go ask him out?"
"Shut up Miller," you growled, slamming the latest file you were working on top of the others on your desk. This was a daily occurrence for you, the teasing. For some reason, most of the office had it through their heads that you had a crush on Chief Thompson, and many of the other agents had apparently made it their life's mission to torture you about it.
The worst part was the fact that they couldn't be more wrong. If Chief Thompson was actually your office crush, you might have sat around and taken the teasing - because they would have been right. But the object of your affection was not sitting behind in his own office, he was sitting at the desk diagonally across from you. You desperately hoped that Daniel didn't believe the other agents' words about the chief, because you would much rather go out with him instead. From the moment you met him, his smile had the ability to melt your heart and you could barely think when he spoke to you.
"What, you don't think Thompson would go for you?"
"It's not Thompson I have a crush on," you muttered, the words slipping out before you could reel them back in. You cringed, hoping with everything you had that no one else had heard your statement.
"What was that?"
You didn't want to answer any more questions, so you just got up and walked out of the bullpen, muttering some half baked lie about needing to go speak to Rose and the other telephone operators. There was a supply closet two hallways down that you could hide in for a little while, and you quickly shut the door behind you, plunging yourself and your thoughts into darkness. It was peaceful, but you knew you would have to go back and face the other agents eventually. However, a knock on the door to the supply closet took you by surprise, because you didn't expect anyone to follow you. "Y/N?" Daniel's voice came through the door. "I know you're in there, would you come out please?" You stayed silent, hoping he would leave, but he didn't. "Y/N?"
You finally gave up and opened the door, stepping back into the hallway to look at Daniel. He had a worried look on his face. "I'm sorry," you said softly. "I just couldn't take them anymore."
He nodded, a kind look on his face. "It's not Thompson you have a crush on is it?" he asked. You shook your head. "You can tell me, if you want. I promise I won't say anything."
"I really can't," you said.
"Okay, well-" he started to speak, but you cut him off.
"It's you." Once again, you couldn't control your words.
"Me?"
"I was so tired of them teasing me like that," you said. "Because I was terrified that you would believe them. And I know you don't feel-"
This time, it was his turn to cut you off, reaching down to take your hand. "Who says I don't feel the same way? Unless it's actually Thompson you're after."
The tone of his joke was a lot more friendly than the others you had heard today, and you cracked a smile. "Nope, it's definitely you."
"Well then, how about I take you out to dinner after we get off?"

What lies before us
Book 2 of a Jack Thompson X Reader Story
Book 1: What Lies Beneath
Chapter 1
Y/N was good at keeping secrets. She was excellent at it – after all, it had been her job for four years, and back then, her life was on the line every day. If she had slipped up, she would have been dead meat. She was excellent at it because she was a spy – keeping secrets was in their job description. She had no problem continuing the banter and annoyed remarks towards Jack Thompson during their working hours to upkeep the image that nothing had changed. She had no problem doing it. It was a different story for Jack. After all, his normal tone with people could often be characterised as the tone of a jerk. What was worse, Y/N had to endure the remarks of other people in the office, and as much as he liked to throw them onto the street, he couldn’t. They hadn’t done something he had not done too. At a time.
Today was such a day. Agent Lee’s vocal comment about how women simply didn’t belong in this environment, even ‘if they looked like Y/N’ annoyed him probably ten times as much as it did her.
“Good thing I make the hiring and firing decisions, Lee, isn’t it?”, Thompson said in passing, “Or did you get the bullet out of my chest?”
“Sorry, Chief.”
Y/N clenched her teeth to stop her from laughing. She didn’t know what was funnier – Lee’s voice that sounded like a bitten dog, or Thompson’s poisonous stare. When she brought the coffee to the Chief – an unfortunate job she had yet to get rid of somehow – she whispered in passing: “Try not to stare him to death. He’s said this about Marge a million times.”
He would have loved to say that she was not Peggy Carter, but he also knew that it was better to just say ‘thanks’ for the coffee.
Back at her desk, her phone rang.
“Agent L/N, SSR, with whom am I speaking?”
“Y/N!”
“Peggy?”, Y/N asked, “What a coincidence, I was just thinking about you. What’s the matter? How’s the western front?”
“The temperatures are slowly getting more bearable”, Carter said, “it’s even rained some days ago.”
Staring outside the window, Y/N noticed that it was still raining in New York. “What a miracle.”
“I made some progress on the Arena Club pin. It seems to link to the club’s city of origin, where they, at least historically, would hold their meetings in an undisclosed location. I’d imagine that, whatever the key opens, it will be connected to this place.”
“And where is the club’s origin?”, Y/N asked back, noting all the info down onto a paper, “Do you know that already?”
“That’s why I’m calling you”, Peggy replied, “because it’s not on the west coast. Imagine where the most likely location is for an organisation connected to wealth, power, and politics.”
“…Washington D.C.”
“It would appear so.”
“Fantastic. And what about Underwood?”, Y/N questioned.
“There have been no crimes reported in our jurisdiction that would match her skillset. It’s not impossible, of course, that she is around here, still, but she knows about the Arena Club. After some digging, we found out that not only was she hired to steal the pin, but she’d had relationships with at least one of the members before their… unfortunate demise through Whitney Frost.”
Y/N sighed. Catching Dottie Underwood was as easy as catching a dragon. Just, she’d argue, more dangerous for the people involved.
“I’ll let Chief know.”
“If we’ll find the time, we’ll fly over to discuss the case in depth. We just have to finish up a few things here, first.”
“Don’t worry, Peggy, we’ll not botch the job”, Y/N assured, “Though I’m not looking forward to heading into DC.”
She could hear Peggy laugh and someone speak in the background. “Tell Sousa I said hi.”
“I will. See you soon, Y/N.”
“Bye, Peggy.”
She stared at her notes, exhaling slowly. Another day, another attempt to catch a ex-Soviet child assassin.
Getting up, she pinched the bridge of her nose. The Arena Club was about as far removed from any Communist organisation she could think of. Aside from the Mafia, there was hardly any organisation more interested in wild capitalism than the Arena Club.
“Chief”, she exclaimed when knocking at his door, “Carter called. Underwood.”
She was called into the office and placed her notes on Jack’s desk. “She traced the Club’s origin to DC. And she assumes that Underwood is going after whatever it is the Club was hiding, too.”
He rubbed his eyes, studying her handwriting. “Brilliant”, he deadpanned.
“It’s the best lead we’ve got on both”, she shrugged, “and I’d really love to know that the Russian killing machine is locked up somewhere real save.”
“You want to lock her up?”, he questioned, “You have too much faith in our prison system. Unless, of course, you want to keep watch yourself.”
“You’re thinking of permanently stopping her?”, Y/N inquired, crossing her arms.
“Accidents happen”, he shrugged, “and usually, if you have a bomb on your hands, you diffuse it, not bury it under some concrete.”
Y/N scoffed: “I suppose. Do we have the clearance to neutralise her?”
“She’s Soviet. Of course we do. Executive Order 9835, remember?”, he asked back, referring to Truman’s decree on tighter regulations on Federal Agents to sniff out any Communist sympathisers, “We’re just doing what they’d want us to do. Eliminate the Red threat.”
Though liberally interpreted, Y/N was aware of the current climate. The White House and the Congress would have their backs. After all, they were suspecting foreign agents everywhere.
“Alright then”, she nodded, “Shooting it is.”
She was about to leave when she heard Agent Hill call her name: “L/N, phone’s ringing!”
“What is it today?”, she hissed, turning on the spot to get the call.
“Agent L/N, SSR, whose speaking?”
“Y/N?”
Y/N wasn’t quite sure if she heard right. “Jonas? Is that you?”
“Don’t ask how I got this number, I probably breached protocol more than fifty times”, she could have recognised the voice anywhere. He had worked with her in Germany – one of the few, incredibly valuable locals that worked with the opposition.
“Protocol?”, she asked, “You’re working for whom, exactly?”
“MI6, and we’ve intercepted communication from East Germany”, he spoke quickly, and Y/N knew better than to waste time asking questions. “They were discussing plans to re-establish communication with an asset in America. The pronouns used refer to a female agent who has entered the US between 1941 and 1946 and has had contact with the SSR.”
“Anything else?”
“It’s incredibly vague, but that it is of the outmost importance that this operation be kept from the Americans, and that something has to be shipped from America to Leningrad, before November.”
“Why would MI6 not contact us in the first place?”, she questioned, “Shouldn’t that be in the interest of both?”
In the background, she could hear Agent Lee barked at more junior agents to fetch him coffee, given the designated person for that was busy. Y/N would have loved to inform him to keep his mouth shut, but was too busy listening to Jonas.
“There was an order not too long ago to send these types of things to the FBI rather than the SSR. I don’t know why.”
“I think I know”, she groaned. Vernon Masters – may his soul rest in the hell he deserved. “Jonas, if you hear anything, and I mean, anything else, please find a way to contact me again. And thank you. I know this is dangerous for your position.”
“Hell”, he scoffed, “We’ve done worse. They’ll just kick me out, not execute me like the Nazis would have.”
“Still. I’ll be in touch.”
She stared at her notes. She had heard Thompson walking up to her during the phone talk and was now looking over her shoulder.
“What was that about?”
“Seems like today is Dottie-Underwood-day”, she replied sarcastically, turning towards him, “That was Jonas Bauer. He was a German resistance member and worked with me in the war. He’s now working for MI6, who apparently received the order to disregard the SSR, and direct their information to the FBI.” She pressed her lips together: “Anyways. Short summary is, Underwood will steal something that has to be shipped to Leningrad, before November.”
Thompson frowned. “Why the tight schedule?”
Y/N tilted her head. “If I had to guess, because whatever she’s stealing is quite sensitive. If I were them, I’d avoid using ships if possible. The American navy has the possibility to hunt them down, and a ship is more vulnerable than a plane. And possibly, the November-deadline has something to do with the temperature. Which would mean it’s something that is volatile to altitude, and at least partially made out of liquid or gas that shouldn’t drop below a certain temperature. That would explain the ship, and the month.”
The agents around her looked at her with a perplexed expression. Jack simply looked dumbfounded.
“Yeah. I guess it would.”
“And you know who could maybe give us an idea of what they want to steal?”, Y/N asked, dreading her own answer. Not again!
“No.”
“Yes. I don’t like it either.”
“After Dooley and L.A., I’d say going to Stark is way down the list”, Jack retorted tensely.
“Sure”, she shrugged, “Do you have any other brilliant, albeit conceded scientists on that list of yours? Maybe Samberly, if we ask nicely.”
He threw her a look, and she only grinned: “Like I said. I don’t like it either.”
“We dont even know where Stark is. He could be out of the country, for all that we know”, Jack objected again.
“Yeah, he could”, she agreed, “but you know who probably does? Edwin Jarvis.”
He raised an eyebrow: “You have the phone number of Stark’s butler?”
“I had to be able to reach him in L.A. I naturally wrote it down”, she shrugged, “So yes. I do.”
“Great. Tell him I am repulsed by the thought of working together.”
Y/N shook her head: “Unbelievable.”
Looking up, she noticed again the gazes of her co-workers observing their interaction. Too familiar? Raising an eyebrow, she asked: “What, anyone else have something to contribute that I should relay to the butler?”
Jack frowned at his staff: “Your work isn’t doing itself, agents.”
A muffled ‘sorry chief’ emerged from the room as he left Y/N to her own devices as she now made the call to Mr. Jarvis whilst the rest of the office rejoiced that the poor agent who had been barked at by Lee returned with their coffee.
“Edwin Jarvis-“
“Good morning, Mr. Jarvis, this is Y/N L/N from the SSR. We’ve worked together not too long ago”, she said quickly.
“Yes, I remember. The Frost-incident.”
“Exactly. See, we have a development here with the Underwood-case, and what is important right now is that the Soviets want to steal something, and they need Underwood for it. I suspect it could be linked to the Arena Club. In any case, they need the item or items to be shipped from the US to Leningrad before November. I assume it’s because of the volatility of the product, which would indicate it is some sort of weapon. Does Howard Stark know anything about the sorts?” She spoke so silently that not even the man at the next desk could have understood her well, a habit she had picked up early in her career as a spy.
“Mr. Stark knows a great deal about many things, but that does not mean he shares it openly with his surroundings.”
“Well, it is very important. Could you ask him if he has ever knowingly sold anything to members, or to people close to members of the Arena Club, or if – once again – some blueprint of his disappeared? I’m sorry to bother you again, but the security of the world might be under threat here.” Y/N had the ability to use polite words, but utter them in such a way that it was clear that she did not accept ‘no’ for an answer.
“I will chase him down to inquire. It might take a while, though, I am afraid. He is currently on a yacht outside of Hawaii.”
Of course he was. She rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Well, he can dock in Pearl Harbour”, Y/N retorted dryly, “And take a plane from there back to L.A. He might need Miss Carter’s help to explore all possible links of that being one of his inventions that got stolen, or sold.”
“Yes, Miss L/N.”
“Thank you, Mr. Jarvis. And until next time.”
It had felt that it was one of these days where Y/N had repetitively run in circles from her desk, to Thompson’s office, to the coffee machine and back again. It was Agent McKinley’s turn for the nightshift, so the rest could leave between six and seven. Returning to her desk to collect her handbag before leaving, she noticed a note placed on top of it, which she carefully unfolded. She recognised the handwriting instantly – Jack’s handwriting was much neater than most would suspect.
19:15. Entrance Underground.
He always used the European way of writing time – apparently, he had been made accustomed to it in the Marine Corps. A way to avoid the a.m./p.m. confusion – a confusion Americans invented, as Y/N made the experience that not even the British subscribed to their way of telling the time.
It was 19:04 when she had unfolded the note, so she left the SSR office without wasting more time, and to make sure the two of them would not leave the office in immediate succession.
It was September – and it was still pretty warm, so walking down the streets was actually still a pleasant experience. At 19:15, as expected, both of them walked towards the underground station and headed down the street to the parking area where Thompson had parked his car.
“If I may give you a piece of advice”, Y/N said with a grin, “Next time someone makes a foul remark, don’t act like you care. You’re not supposed to care.”
“Yeah”, he grunted, “But what the hell has Lee contributed since joining the SSR? Even of the basis of merit, he should keep his mouth shut.”
“Yes”, she sighed, “But it’s not really about merit, is it?”
Jack rolled his eyes. He knew what she was saying was true. He had even said the same thing to Peggy. They’d never be seen as an equal to men – at least not by most of their co-workers.
When getting in the car, Y/N quickly checked their surrounding to make sure they wouldn’t directly be seen by another agent, but the street was empty.
“Will you let me work the Underwood case?”, she asked quietly when he started driving down the street. Jack remained silent for a while, and his face grew serious.
“You know my skills are exceptional for this kind of work”, she reminded him, knowing that it wasn’t really about her skills.
“I know that, Y/N.”
“We’re in this profession for a reason, Jack. It’s bound to be dangerous”, she replied silently, “But you can’t keep me from being involved. Having the best people on the job reduces the risks of failure. If you send less-qualified agents up for it, you’re just setting them up to be killed.”
“I understand that, Y/N, I do. But that doesn’t mean I’ll like it.”
“But you’ll let me do it regardless?”, she asked back.
“We’ll cross that bridge when it comes to it. Who knows? Maybe, by some miraculous coincidence, she’ll be hit by a truck”, he replied dryly.
“Yes. I’ve heard that’s a common way for Soviet super-assassins to die”, Y/N agreed cynically, “Right after drowning in the shower.”
 ......
He pulled up to the empty parking space next to the entrance of the apartment block outside the city centre. He liked the anonymity of it – he hardly knew his neighbours, because of his very erratic working hours, the travelling, and the occasional near-death experiences, he hardly had the chance to bump into any of them. It was only the third time Y/N was at his apartment, because, quite honestly, he preferred the atmosphere in hers. But his was closer to work, and that made for less commute. And for more sleep.
Whilst Jack warmed up something for dinner, Y/N was occupied with setting her hair in pin curls for the night. She always thought that this procedure made her look silly, or like a grandma. If Jack had been honest though, he thought watching her do it was actually a very personal experience. Because, unless they let you, women would not show the process to men. It signified a sort of closeness that was hard to describe.
Wrapping the curls in a silk towel to secure them, and to have a more comfortable time sleeping, Y/N returned to the kitchen area to join him for dinner. It was beef stew with potatoes, which wasn’t fancy, but it was tasty. And most significantly, he had actually prepared it in foresight, so she gave him extra points for resourcefulness.
“How is the sleeping going?”, she asked eventually, referring to the occasional nightmares she had witnessed the first time they had shared a bed not that long ago.
“You know”, he evaded, “It’s getting there.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow, not truly convinced that this meant it was getting better, but decided not to interrogate him. She’d see it eventually, anyways, she suspected.
“And did you tell your mother that I am back and alive, and all is well between us?”, she asked jokingly.
“Yes.” He grinned: “But now, ma is insistent on you coming over to say hi.”
“I will”, she assured, “once we have a quiet week.”
He laughed: “Yeah – like that’s going to happen any time soon.”
Y/N got ready to go to bed, taking off her makeup, neatly folding her clothes, making those for the next day ready. It was habit – just like always having a switch-blade knife tied to her thigh. It was habits like these that had kept her alive through the war, and they were hard to shake.
She wore a simple night robe to bed, nothing like in the magazines with lavish fur, but only simple embroidery.
As she would have guessed, Jack’s nightwear style was about as adventurous as hers – a cotton button-down shirt and pants.
“Those pants have a hole at the ankle”, she pointed out as he entered the room.
He looked down and shrugged: “It’s for sleeping, right? Besides, I don’t wear pants, I wear trousers.”
“What’s the difference?”, she questioned amusedly as he climbed into the bed next to her.
“Women wear pants, men trousers. Or so my DI informed us in Boot Camp.”
“Your DI must have made this up”, she laughed, “But sure. Jack Thompson only wears manly trousers.”
She pulled the blanket up to her chin and turned to on her side, facing Jack. “Good night.”
“Night.” He switched off the lights and searched for a comfortable position. It was still foreign to know that someone was sleeping just inches beside him, but not uncomfortable. Apart from the cold feet, that was apparently something all women universally shared to torment the men in their beds. Or so he was convinced.
Jack was an incredibly light sleeper – he hadn’t been as a child, but since the war, he was incredibly sensitive to sounds. Hence, when someone knocked against the front door, it took about three seconds for him to be wide awake.
“What the hell”, he grumbled, rubbing his eyes. It couldn’t be neighbours – again, barely anyone knew him. He dragged himself out of bed to see that it was shortly after three. He trotted towards the door, only to see two figures through the peephole, whose silhouettes he could make out even with the dim light of the corridor outside. He looked behind him, hearing Y/N’s steady breathing. He prayed to God that she’d stay asleep.
He opened the door and stepped outside: “This better be important, Sousa, it’s three in the morning!”
“We thought it is important to let you know right now, as we’re headed to the airport right after to fly to Atlanta to follow a lead there”, Carter shot back at his annoyed tone.
“’A’right”, he rubbed his face awake, “shoot.”
“Stark was able to reduce the numbers of candidates down to one he finds most likely. It’s a bomb that has about the destructiveness of a nuclear bomb, but its primary ingredient is a special gas, a gas only he knows how to make. But a member of the Arena Club once saw his equations and the blueprints”, Sousa explained.
“So you suspect they’re transporting a bomb case and explosive gas?”, Jack asked back, “Of course they do. It always has to be something that explodes, right?”
“We’re trying to hunt down the scientists who could have produced it”, Peggy added, “one of them is in Atlanta.”
“Got it.”
“Jack, who are you talking to? It’s the middle of the- Oh, hi, Chief Sousa. Peggy.” Y/N walked up to the door, and though only half-awake, she wasn’t quite sure what was funnier, the disbelief on Sousa’s face, Peggy’s mixture of satisfaction and horror, or Jack’s embarrassment.
“You two keep your mouths shut”, Thompson hissed, “You understand? I don’t need this getting to my agents just yet.”
“Oh yeah? I remember there was a time you loved taking a jab at Peggy and I”, Sousa retorted with a grin.
“Yeah”, Thompson scoffed, “Then you tell me how that’ll end up for Y/N. Whatever she does then, she’ll always be seen as the one whose here because she’s got one on the chief. That was a bit different with Carter.”
“Jack, they take the piss regardless”, Y/N muttered amusedly, “and let that be my problem.”
“Well, and you know what this”, Peggy gestured at Jack and Y/N, “means. You owe me a dinner.”
“You bet on us?”, Jack asked offended.
“I bet on you not constantly having a stick up your behind, indeed”, Peggy winked, “and I think I have been proven more than right.”
“Oh, Peggy”, Y/N shook her head, “Please.”
“Anyways”, Sousa cleared his throat, “I guess, uh, I guess we’ll leave you to it, then. See you soon, Y/N. Jack.”
“Leave us to it?”, Jack repeated, “We were sleeping!”
“Whatever you say, Chief Thompson”, Peggy waved at them, “that’ll be your loss then.”
They left an amused Y/N, and a very red Jack Thompson behind, who was thankful the apartment was not lit, so Y/N couldn’t see his cheeks.
“They couldn’t have left a note”, he grumbled, stepping back into his apartment and locking the door, “It had to be right now.”
“Don’t brood”, she yawned, “It’s way too early for that.” The bed was still warm as they climbed back in.
“I brood whenever I please”, he muttered into his pillow.
“That you do.”
“Y/N?”
“Hm?”
What did he want to say? They didn’t say ‘I love you’. Neither of them had yet.
“Sleep well.”
“You too, Jack.”
 ......
Jack dropped Y/N off far enough so that she could make her way to the office on her own and that they’d be at least 15 minutes between them arriving.
“Good morning, Agent Wallace”, she said when entering the headquarters, “Agent Lee. Chief Thompson.”
He nodded at her, and both found it incredibly odd to greet each other after they had literally eaten breakfast together not even an hour prior.
They settled in for the day and the sounds of paper printing, phones ringing and men cussing created the unique atmosphere that was so typical for the NYC-HQ of the SSR.
“Chief!”, Agent Harrow exclaimed from the phone, “there’s an incident in a movie theatre down 31st street, it sounds incredibly similar to the case you covered not too long ago.”
“Midnight oil?”, Y/N asked confused, looking at Jack, “but Howard said-“
“Exactly”, Thompson interjected, rolling his eyes, “Harrow, Ramirez, McKinley and Wallace, you go have a look. If it is what it seems like – do yourself a favour and don’t pick up the canister.”
The three of them got on their way immediately. Y/N followed Jack into his office under the disguise of bringing him coffee: “You don’t think that’s fishy? Howard hated this invention. He made damn sure he destroyed all the material he had.”
“Could have been someone working off his blueprints again”, he shrugged, “it’s better to have a look than let the NYPD run into it and gouching their eyes out.”
Y/N hadn’t even considered what would happen if untrained policemen came in contact with the gas. Jack was right. It was the careful option.
“You’re right.”
He raised his eyebrows: “’cuse me?”
“You’re right”, she repeated with a raised eyebrow. She hadn’t spoken unclearly.
“That’s a first.”
“Like hell it is”, she grinned and left him be.
In hindsight, Y/N knew that there were just five agents left, because it was still before nine when those would come in with a longer commute. This was unusual, normally, they always wanted eight to be here minimum, nightshift and Sundays aside.
It was like in a movie with the roll broken, moving incredibly slow. The door was thrown wide open and five men stormed in.
“Hands up!”
Y/N identified the accent immediately. Eastern European. Most likely Soviet.
“Guns on ground or we shoot!!”
They were outnumbered – even if they drew their guns, they had them already ready to fire. They’d be quicker. So they complied.
“Codebreaker?”
Jack and Y/N’s eyes met. Though she hadn’t worked as a codebreaker at Bletchley, she had been trained in it. She nodded almost invisibly, and just as invisibly, he shook his head. The last thing he wanted is for them to take her, or isolate her from the group.
“I am.”
“You four”, one of the men put his rifle at Thompson’s neck, “In there!” Thompson, Lee, Michaelson and Goldberg were shoved into Thompson’s office, leaving Y/N with the five men in the main hall.
They shoved her at a desk and placed a paper in front of her.
“Watch the door. Make sure those investigating the theatre don’t get back in. Three men can handle this girl.” He didn’t know she spoke Russian.
The paper was a code of British origin. Dated yesterday. To the Americans.
“Move. Break it”, the man right behind her instructed. He was tall, about two meters, and heavy-set. The other two were significantly shorter and stockier, about 175cm.
“Yes”, she nodded, throwing a glance at Thompson and her colleagues. There it was again. This immense calmness whenever she had known in war that if she failed, she’d be dead. It was so ultimate. So clear.
She heard two of the five men disappear, manning the front entrance from the outside. She didn’t have to worry about them for the time being. She felt the cool blade against her thigh. A blade would never win against rifles, so she had to convince them to drop them.
She started to get an idea of the code that had been used, noting down the patterns to create a key. The men barraged the door to Thompson’s office to make more than sure they had no chance to get out. But given they were now unarmed, they were no real threat anyways.
“What is it?”, the tall fellow asked harshly.
“This will take a while!”, she replied curtly, “but could you please put those guns on the ground? I can’t run and you took my gun off me. They make me incredibly uncomfortable.”
“What do you think, boss?”
“Typical American sissy. Hmh, I mean, what is the harm in it. The other men are barred inside that room.” He gave her a fake smile: “Only for you, beauty.”
They placed the rifles on the desk behind them and she started writing down the initial lines of the document. This was exactly why women made for excellent spies – they could demand something and their perceived softness would help them get their way.
Intercepted conversation between KGB and Soviet Asset in US
She waited until they were just in the right position. One of the men stood in front of Thompson’s barraged door, inspecting it with a self-assured smile. The big fellow stood to her right, close enough that she could take him out first. The third was checking the street for the returning agents.
‘Here goes nothing’.
 .....
“Goddammit!”, Jack cursed, punching nothing but the wall. He had fallen for their trap – the theatre, that had been a set-up to draw out agents.
“Chief, if she can hold them off long enough for the 9 o’clock shift to arrive-“
“You don’t seriously think they won’t kill us before?”, Thompson hissed, “That’s why they came so early. They must’ve been aware of the schedule!”
“But if they need her-“
“Then they take her, Lee!”, Thompson interrupted, tearing his hair, “Fuck. Fuck!”
“Chief-“
“Just shut the hell up, Lee!”, Thompson raised his hand at his agent and silenced the man with a stare that could have killed.
He watched outside, through the glass, watching Y/N. She looked so focused, so absorbed, so aware.
So brave.
She looked up, just a fraction of a second. Enough to localise the position of the three men that were still in the room.
“No.” Jack’s voice broke. She’d die. They’d reach their weapons. She couldn’t be quick enough to strangle three men. Not when at least one of them towered over her like a giant.
This was a suicide mission. He was about to yell, yell to her not to do whatever she was thinking about doing.
But she was beyond asking for permission. That was the Y/N he had never seen before.
He knew the feeling he felt. It felt like back on Iwo when his buddy left their foxhole to man the machine gun whose gunner had just been killed. He knew that that was a suicide mission, but they had to try. And the minute his buddy left the protection of the foxhole, he was gone. But this felt even worse. Because whatever he felt for his buddy, that was brotherly love. And death of a brother hurt like hell. But this, this was no brotherly love. This was love that hadn’t yet had the chance to develop. He could feel his heart stop.
 ......
Y/N’s body tensed up in preparation. It was a split second that it took for her to be ready to attack. She leapt up from her chair, throwing her entire weight against the bear of a man next to her, puncturing his aorta, which resulted in blood spurting in all directions, but at least, he was dead in an instant. The next man was the one at the window who wanted to grab a rifle, but she managed to grab his arm, pull him towards her and shove the blade right through his throat. The third one knew he was done for – she was closer to the weapons than he was. She contemplated killing him nonetheless. But some part of her didn’t want to become what she knew she could be – a killer that didn’t care about her death toll.
“You’re all filthy, disgusting examples of humanity’s worst”, she spoke in Russian, taking handcuffs from the desk with her and immobilising him. Her fighting style looked different to Peggy’s – it was more targeted, more specific. It was, in essence, trained to be lethal.
Only then did she look behind her to see the cut-up bodies of the other two men lying on the ground. They lay in pools of their own blood. She looked at her hands that were covered in it, too. Grabbing a handkerchief, she got most of it off, enough so that she could clear the door to Thompson’s office without smearing it everywhere. Slowly, she started to regain her other senses. She could hear Jack yelling her name. She looked up to see him and the other three looking at her, eyes wide.
Her hands were shaking when she opened the door to his office.
“Y/N, oh God, Y/N-“ Jack grabbed her by the shoulders, looking at her face, “You alright?”
“Yes. Yes, I’m good, J-“
He squeezed her against his chest, and she wanted to inform him that he’d get blood all over him, but it was pretty clear that he didn’t care. “I’m so sorry.”
The door was opened, and the other two men came into sight, but only for a fraction of a second – when they saw the carnage, they took off running. Lee and Goldberg were about to run after them, but Thompson raised a hand: “If they leave the building, they’ll run right into our line of fire.” He pointed to the windows to their right and took the rifles left behind from the assailants.
Y/N watched him from behind. His hands were perfectly calm at the trigger, the weapon perfectly still settled into his shoulder.
Two rapid shots. One was shot in the back of the head, the other in the shoulder. Within a few seconds, neither were still breathing.
“Not bad”, she said dryly.
“I’m not a Marine for nothing.”
“And here I thought you were the Chief of the SSR.”
“That, too”, he replied dryly, “but I’ll never stop being a Marine.”
A/N: I know, it’s insane. It didn’t even take a week. I unfortunately don’t have a clear updating schedule, I’m sure it will slow down at a point. I do have good news though - I have two chapters in reserve, so it hopefully doesn’t take ages for those to be published either. I have a plan, I have an ending in mind, and I want it to be beautiful, terrible, sad, and delightful. Let’s see if I succeed at that. Do let me know your thoughts. Also, on a side note: I really try to do my research to the extent possible: E.g. I found it very important to hightlight that Jack is a Marine (not a member of the Army, or the Navy or Air Force), because it was mentioned that he saw action on the beaches of Iwo Jima, and that was a battle fought by the USMC. And yes. I read like 5 autobiographies of veterans of Iwo & Okinawa to get their education, vocabulary and so on down. Hope you enjoy these little insights into history!

•Y/N POV•
I sighed as I walked into the office on a sunny Monday morning. We had just wrapped up a pretty big case busting an arms dealing ring last week, which means all the guys would want me to file their paperwork. When I arrived at my desk, there was already a teetering pile of files that swayed with each light gust coming through the open window. I hung up my coat, grabbed an armful of files, and shuffled to the filing room. It was gonna be a long day...
Jack walks out of his office just as I’m returning to my desk for another load of files, and raised an eyebrow at me.
“If you’re wondering why I haven’t made the coffee yet, ask the other agents why they can’t file their own damn paperwork” I grumbled as I walked past him with another load to put away. He chuckled at my misfortune a little before turning back to his office to finish his own paperwork.
~~~Time skip to that evening~~~
As I sat down to dinner at the Griffith, one of the girls brought up the fella she’d been seeing. Talking about how kind he was, and all the lovely dates they went on together.
“Is there any special guy in your life Y/N?” The girl asked; her name was Melody. She was a pretty tall girl, with blue eyes and dirty blonde hair.
I heaved a sigh, knowing that the pestering was going to begin soon. Why aren’t you looking for a husband? How are you expected to get married if you aren’t putting yourself out there? My mother asked the same questions every year when I returned for the holidays. I was so invested in proving that a woman could be just as good of an agent as a man, I had no time to go out dancing.
I plastered a smile on my face, “I actually don’t have a fella right now, they keep me awful busy down at the phone company,” as Melody’s face fell, I added, “but having a man might be nice.”
She perked right back up. Her eyes flashing with excitement, I was worried she was gonna try to pair me with her brother, whom I had seen too many pictures of: his pinched face and angry looking features making me wonder how Melody was so pretty and happy looking. She definitely got the looks in her family.
“That’s great! I know this guy, he’s a family friend of mine and he’s been looking for a gal to take out dancing. He works for the government! Super secret job, wouldn’t tell me much about it. War vet, tall, blond and handsome. What do ya say?” Her eyes begging me to say yes, I nodded, making her clap her hands excitedly. One blind date couldn’t hurt right?
~~~~The evening of the date~~~~
I showed up to the real snazzy jazz club that Melody told me was his favorite, right at 7:00 when we were supposed to meet. I was wearing one of my favorite outfits to dance in, boosting my confidence as I saw a woman smack the man’s arm next to her, since he was no longer paying attention to her. I walked in, my eyes scanning, looking for the booth near the far corner of the room she told me he’d be waiting in. As I slipped between people to get to the back, I saw the back of his head: well kept dirty blond hair, swooped to the side. Reminds me of Jack’s hair. I thought to myself.
I sat in the booth, and when I looked up, I came face to face with none other than my boss, chief of the New York SSR, Jack Thompson.

•JACK’S POV•
As I was sitting waiting for my date, I looked again at my watch, seeing that it was just now 7:00. She should be here any minute, I thought. At the thought of meeting her for the first time, I began to get nervous.
What if she doesn’t like me and I like her?
What if I don’t like her and she likes me?
What if my breath smells bad when we are dancing? Wait did I brush my teeth-
As I was running through all these thoughts in my head, a woman sat down across from me. As I looked up, I locked eyes with Y/N L/N. Of all the girls in New York, Mel sets me up with Y/N L/N? Not that I disliked her, but we weren’t exactly the best pals in the workplace. I internally cringed at the memory of me laughing at her this week for having to do all the filing.
She looked gorgeous, as per usual, but you don’t just get to tell your coworkers that, especially a coworker you outrank. Her (h/t) hair was styled to perfection, as per usual, not a strand out of place. I just stared at her in shock, not knowing how to go about this. Was it right to dance with her tonight, or would it disrupt our professional relationship?

•Y/N’S POV•
HOW ON EARTH DID MELODY KNOW JACK?! I was screaming to myself. Of all the government workers in New York, this was the tall blond war vet she knew? I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to have wasted an evening by coming here for nothing, but was it the right thing to do to dance with your boss in these circumstances?
I offered him a tight smile, and stood up from the booth, making up my mind. He looked at me in confusion when I held my hand out to him.
“Did you really wanna come here all for nothing? I’m sure I’m not the ideal dance partner, but I won’t step on your toes” I said over the fast music coming from the bandstand behind us. He smirked, and stood up as we walked arm in arm to the dance floor.

Jack and Y/N danced for hours, talking and laughing about their childhoods, families, and their futures. Fast swinging songs, and slower songs where they could really focus on the conversation. They danced as if they had been dancing together for years, on tempo and completely in sync. They danced and danced until they got kicked out because the band was done for the night.
As Jack walked her up to her door and bid her goodnight, he couldn’t believe he hadn’t gotten to know her sooner. She was one hell of a gal. As he walked down to his car to drive home, he smiled softly, looking forward to next friday when they had already planned to go dancing again.
He’d have to thank his cousin Melody for this.

I hope this was to your liking! :)
