What Lies Before Us, Chapter 18
Previous Chapters
A/N: Apologies for the long pause. I actually had this chapter in reserve but never got around to publishing it. What made me publish it today was A) time and B) the lovely, lovely words by @clinicallydepressedreader under one of the previous chapters. Thanks, my dear! It’s people like you that make this more than worth it. I am so honoured to have had that impact on your perception on Jack - truly, it means the world! The characters are actually the most difficult part for me to get right (in terms of the canon timelines and their stories) because the historical background, well... my full-time job is researching the 1930s/1940s in Germany. That certainly helped!
“Clear.”
The room hadn’t been made by room service, who had adhered to the sign outside the door asking for privacy.
“Those are the plans Elias had handed over to them”, Y/N pointed to the desk, recognising the blueprints from Peggy’s descriptions.
“Wasn’t one for much private stuff”, Jack commented. They found no pictures, only the absolute necessities. Crouching down next to the bed, Jack saw something buried below the mattress.
“Wannabe spy”, he commented sarcastically, pulling out a notebook.
Projekt Kriegerblut
HYDRA, Abteilung Forschung für Neurologie und Psychoanalytik
BETA-Proband M.C.
Start Behandlung: September 1940
Y/N had noticed him reading something. “You found something?”
“Hard to say, what does ‘Kriegerblut’ mean?”
“Warrior’s blood”, Y/N frowned, “Why?” He handed her the notebook.
“I think that could link to your friend there.”
Y/N’s eyes scanned the pages. “If that refers to Carter, then lord help us, given that he’s only the beta candidate. Means that somewhere out there, they have a more finalised candidate. One that does, whatever the intent is, better than our man”, she stated, flipping through the pages. Most were notes by doctors about the change in brain scans after repeated torture and electroshock ‘therapy’.
“What does it say?”, Jack asked impatiently.
“Shhh”, she hushed, “I gotta first read it!”
Loading all the evidence into their car, Y/N continued her lecture whilst Jack started driving to Sousa’s location.
“Unbelievable”, Y/N eventually whispered, “that is actually unbelievable.”
“What is it?”, Jack’s eyes met hers for a split-second, so he saw her deep concern.
“If whatever they are describing here is factual”, she began, “then they are attempting to manipulate individuals, basically rewiring their brains to become assassins devoid of will.”
“Absolute mind control?”, he asked in disbelief, “that’s impossible. That’s gotta be impossible.” Taking over someone temporarily by creating a momentary delusion as had been the case in Fennhoff’s technique was one thing, rewiring someone’s brain fundamentally an entirely different.
Y/N raised an eyebrow: “I hope so, too, but then again, I guess people in the French Revolution would’ve said the same thing about the atomic bomb falling out of freaking planes.”
“So, what, he doesn’t know who he is? So we’re talking to an empty shell now, lacking the chip on the shoulder with the puppet master dead?”, Jack inquired, still not entirely convinced that whatever they had found could actually be reality.
“Do I look like I have experience with Nazi mind control?”, Y/N asked back with a huff, “All I can say is what they reported here. The candidate was captured in summer of 1940, and is described as a ‘European individual in his mid-20s of healthy status’. Age and time of capture would coincide with Michael’s presumed death, and well, there’s the matching initials. Apparently, he was candidate 19, and the only one not to die in the process. He was tortured for months, Jack.”
“Sorry if my sympathy is not overflowing just yet. The guy tried to kill you not even five hours ago, Y/N!”
“Yes, with an emphasis on tried”, Y/N agreed, “but we’re all alive, the kid’s fine, and I only have a bandage and a nasty gash to remind me. Had a scar there anyways, so never mind.” She exhaled. “What’s my concern now is that we need someone… someone we can trust who has experience with this sorta thing. I know absolutely no one that fits the bill. You?”
“Neither.”
“Then let’s hope the old trick of hitting him hard enough on the head works”, Y/N commented dryly, “I’m not betting on getting help from the one mind-control expert we’ve come across in the last two years in the form of Fennhoff.”
Once more, silence returned to their car. Y/N knew he was upset, it was written all across his face.
“Are you angry that I didn’t shoot him, are you pissed I didn’t let him shoot the kid, or are you angry that we’re headed to see a possible mad man right now?”, she asked, tilting her head, “or is it all of the above?”
“I’m not angry.”
“Yes”, Y/N snorted, “you are in a glorious mood.”
“No, I’m not”, he agreed, “but I’m not angry. I’m just waiting for this campaign to be over. It feels like since Stark’s disappearance last year, we’ve been chasing boogiemen across the globe and every time we think we’re done, it just continues.”
“I know”, Y/N said quietly, “I’m tired, too.” She swallowed: “But we can’t just ditch now, can we? I mean, you saw Peggy’s face in there. We can’t just leave her and Sousa with someone – or something – of which we have no idea what he’s capable of.”
“Yeah”, he rubbed the bridge of his nose, “I know.” Clenching his jaw, he accepted his fate, and his mind returned to duty. “How’d you think we interrogate him? If that file is correct, I doubt he’ll react much to the stick.”
Y/N nodded. “Probably he won’t, yeah”, pressing her lips together, “again, I have no knowledge of how to de-programme someone like that. I suppose reconnecting with his past, with his identity would be an avenue. To turn him from Candidate 19 back to Michael Carter.”
“But only Peggy knew him back then”, he interjected, “she can’t interrogate him! That’s bound to fail.”
“Why, because it’s her brother?”, Y/N raised an eyebrow.
Jack looked at her as if asking that question was a crime all by itself. “Yes”, he hissed, “because he’s her brother!”
“You know”, Y/N said with a grin, “Now I know why she always butted heads with you. You and him? You could be related. And from what she told me about him, I think even some of the character traits line up.”
He looked offended: “That’s harsh.”
“You met a monster”, she objected, “I doubt he was like that when they were playing knights in the garden.”
Now, he laughed. “Doesn’t surprise me one bit. Couldn’t imagine Marge being a princess.”
…………
“Rose?”, Y/N asked when they approached the cellar in which Sousa had handcuffed Carter to an interrogation table, “how’s everyone?”
Rose gave her a telling look: “Everyone is just in shock.”
“Is Sousa with him?”, Jack asked and Rose nodded, pointing to the room where they could sit in to the interrogation from behind the one-way mirror.
“Peggy in there?”, Y/N asked, and Rose nodded again.
“Gimme a second”, Y/N said to Jack and left to enter the room. “Peggy?”
The woman sat on the desk, legs crossed. She didn’t look sad, or like she had cried. She looked completely blank as her eyes flickered over to Y/N.
“How’s your arm?”
“Fine.”
Y/N sat next to her, looking into the interrogation room.
“What have I missed?”, she asked silently.
“Nothing”, Peggy said bitterly, “he’s said absolutely nothing.”
“I would have guessed so”, Y/N said, deciding to be upfront, “Jack discovered a notebook in Keller’s room. We weren’t sure if it was referring to him, but the evidence all points in that direction. If we are correct, then HYDRA reprogrammed his brain. A sort of mind control. They detailed how they got him to that point, but unfortunately, nothing of how to reverse it.”
“Mind control?”, Peggy asked, forcing herself to look away from Michael, now facing Y/N. Y/N could practically see her trying to pull herself together.
“Yeah, but different than what Fennhoff did with people like Chief Dooley. It’s much more… fundamental”, Y/N tried to explain, “I read it just now on our way here. It was pain-based. Peggy, the details don’t matter that much, but they’ve tortured him for months. It took months for them to drill him into a tool. He became Kandidat 19 – Keller addressed him in that way, too. It would seem that by the time they were done with him, he’d fall into bouts of servitude.” She paused. “But he isn’t perfect. He was referred to as the BETA candidate. In some of the notes, they described how he’d fall out of his trance mid-mission or not act out the actions they wanted him to do in as miniscule detail as they would have liked. I think they decided to make several changes for their next generation of candidates, something with trigger words. I don’t know what they would’ve changed, but they didn’t do that with Michael.”
Peggy remained silent for a while. The door opened and Jack entered, nodding at Peggy.
“Do you think I can get through to him, Y/N?”, Peggy asked. Y/N felt helpless – She had nothing to base this upon. She was forced to answer a question she couldn’t have known the answer to.
“I believe we will not leave any stone unturned”, Y/N spoke eventually. “Dooley got out of his trance somehow. There must be a way to break this, too, even if it takes more than Jack banging against a door.”
“You think it’s some sort of drill, right?”, Jack asked Y/N, to which she only nodded. “Then it’s most likely connected to self-discipline, right? I dunno, maybe some sort of learnt behaviour that was reinforced by HYDRA, disobedience means torture, so self-discipline is a self-protection.”
Y/N remained quiet because she wanted to know where he was headed with this.
“Well, if it is, then we need to break down his ability to self-discipline.” He said it so matter-of-fact that Y/N had to glance to Peggy, only to see that the brunette also didn’t seem to know what Jack was getting at.
“And how do you suspect we do that, Doctor?”, Y/N asked, crossing her arms.
Jack looked at her with a deadpan look: “It’s my suggestion. It’s gonna involve alcohol. Isn’t that your rationale for hardly touching that stuff?”
“You wanna get him drunk?”, Y/N said, not knowing if he was kidding.
“You got a better idea? It’s probably less harmful than some of the harder drugs out there”, he shrugged.
Y/N turned to Peggy: “Thoughts?”
“He finds gin repulsive”, she said sarcastically, “you better get whiskey.”
“See?”, Y/N said with a grin looking at Thompson, “I knew you two share similarities!” He shot her a venomous glare.
“You don’t happen to have a bottle in the trunk, do you?”, she asked sarcastically, causing him to open his mouth in offence.
“D’you think I’m an alcoholic over here?”
“Nah, I told you before, it’s gotten much better”, she shrugged with a smile, “but I was just checking. I’ll get us the goods.”
…………
When they informed Daniel about the plan, he looked at Thompson and L/N as if they were from outer space.
“That’s your plan?”, he asked, just to be sure he didn’t miss a part, “You’ll get him drunk?”
“Yes”, Thompson confirmed.
“My bad”, Sousa’s tone was mocking, “Here I thought we were the Strategic Scientific Reserve, not the college fraternity admitting another member into our ranks of crazy.”
“If you happened to have gathered some intel about German mind control techniques in the trenches of Bastogne, by all means, dogface”, Thompson huffed, “Speak up.”
Sousa rolled his eyes at the insult. “You know, if there’s one thing the likes of you have in common – it’s that they will go above and beyond to remind the rest of the servicemen that they’re Marines.”
Jack slapped him on the shoulder: “Naturally. We did the legwork for it. Don’t worry, we made even more fun of the swab-jockeys than your kind.”
Y/N scoffed, shaking her head. “I guess that referred to the poor sailors that had to work beside you.”
“How’d you guess?”, Jack asked, knowing that she’d probably not have had contact with many members from the Navy during her time in the European theatre.
“Believe it or not, but the distain you had on your face when you spoke to Luke who has been in the Navy was a clear indicator that you don’t hold them in the highest of regards”, she replied, “might have just been Luke, though, and just a lucky guess this time around.”
He winked: “To us, the US Navy was the Marine’s taxi service.”
“Oh my God, way to boast about your choice of branch”, she rolled her eyes amusedly, “C’mon, warrior of God, we’re off to meet Rose and the kid. They left for another safehouse an hour ago.”
“What, we’re not leaving Carter with Sousa and Carter!”, he objected, “besides, last time I checked, I’m the most senior interrogator.”
“Yeah”, she raised an eyebrow at him, “and I’ve seen my share of drunk people for this month. What’s your point?” That remark gave her the reaction she had intended for it to generate – slight embarrassment – as she added: “Besides, he’s cuffed to a table, and we tied down his feet. We’ll put the bunker on lockdown and you’ll need a password to unlock it, so he can’t get out.” She grabbed him by the arm: “Now get going or I swear I will always and forever refer to as a soldier.”
………
“We’re not leaving just to check on the other two, are we?”, Jack asked in the car.
Y/N took notice that he had correctly deducted that from her previous behaviour.
“I think that we shouldn’t be listening in on whatever Peggy has to say to possibly get through to him”, she confirmed quietly, “Peggy’s usually very quiet when it’s about her private life, particularly the one she had before the war.”
“She told you about Michael”, he pointed out, “you’re sure it’s about us listening in, and not just about me listening in?” He shot her a side-glance before returning to the road.
Y/N studied his face. He didn’t seem hurt by the implication, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t.
“No”, she disagreed, “I knew very little about her life, despite having lived with her. I knew that she had a brother and she showed me a few pictures, and she told me that she didn’t have a particularly cordial relationship to her mother. Found her too boyish. I guess the problematic family relations were a point for us to bond over.” She sighed: “I’m sure she would’ve told you if… well. It’s always harder to say these things to people who come from a family that’s intact. It makes you mourn your losses all over again.” Once she had uttered the words, she realised how utterly sad they had sounded, which was reflected on Jack’s concerned face.
“I don’t feel that way when I’m with your family”, she added quickly, “I have known them for what seems like my entire life.”
He cleared his throat, taking his hand off the clutch for a moment to grab her left hand and grazing the ring on her finger: “They’ll be your family, too.”
……….
Entering the other safehouse, which was an unused office building formerly used by the SSR, Elias and Rose were chatting in one of the rooms, evidently about how American and German pies were nothing alike.
Y/N shot Jack a glance. He raised an eyebrow and remarked: “Didn’t take the kid to be a baker.”
“Neither.”
Hearing their voices, Rose and Elias watched them enter.
“Agent L/N, how is your arm?”
“Don’t worry”, she waved her hand, “Unlike the SSR men, I used my arm to take it, not my sternum.”
“And you accuse me of bragging”, Jack complained with a grin that he couldn’t quite wipe off his face.
“Oh please”, Y/N rolled her eyes, “I’m actually surprised you didn’t get one of those dodgy tattoos during service. Well, I suppose you make up for it verbally.”
She could see the thoughts spinning in Elias’ face, when she realised that to him, they were Chief Thompson of the NY SSR, and Agent L/N from the NY SSR. Peggy and Daniel had probably seen no need to mention the fact that there was a private dimension to their relationship, hence, her remarks must have come across as incredibly rude for a simple subordinate.
“Don’t worry”, she said in German with a grin, “he’s my fiancé. I’m the one person in this agency that’s allowed to be honest with him.”
“What?”, Jack asked when Elias started laughing.
“Nothing”, Y/N said in a sing-song-voice, “Asked him if he enjoyed his experience in the field today.”
Jack didn’t believe a word of what she was saying and eyed her suspiciously. “Sure.”
“Chief Sousa called a moment ago, something about a report”, Rose spoke up, “He said you two will know what to do.”
“Yeah, that’s a nice term for filing duty”, Y/N remarked dryly, “About the mission.”
She looked around, searching for a desk. “How about this, I’ll do the filing, you”, she turned to Jack, “find us something to eat. I’m starving.”
“You volunteer to do the filing?”, he asked, acting shocked.
“I can be nice from time to time”, she grinned, “Deal?”
“You bet!”
…………
“So you two are headed back to New York soon?”, Elias asked over dinner, which were burgers, because, as Jack had explained, that was the most convenient to get into the car.
Y/N looked over to Jack. “Yes, at least for a while.”
“We’re leaving the SSR”, Jack shared, causing Rose to almost drop her food.
“WHAT?”, she exclaimed, “Who’s going to take care of the east, then?!”
Y/N chuckled at her panic. “Don’t worry, Rose. The SSR will be in the best of hands. Perhaps the most capable hands it could ever want. Isn’t that right, Thompson?”
He rolled his eyes at the teasing tone in her voice. “Yeah, yeah.”
“Carter’s going to be in charge”, Y/N said to explain, “she, Colonel Philips and Howard Stark will restructure the SSR.”
Rose pursed her lips, before smiling brightly: “That sounds exciting!”
“Yes, for your sake, I hope Stark’s not too involved”, Jack scoffed, “otherwise, the new offices might explode. Or implode. It’s concerning both happened before.”
“Oh, come on”, Y/N shook her head, “He was involved in almost all the biggest scientific developments of the last decades. And those functioned as intended. At least most of them.”
“I am also very confident that his rocket programme will turn out to be a success”, Elias said with a small smile, “who knows, Stark tech might just be the first man-made thing to land on the moon.”
“The moon?”, Jack asked, not convinced. “Yeah, sure. Why not.”
“Yes, he intends to send a manned rocket to the moon”, Elias nodded, “that’s why he hired me, amongst others.”
“Great”, Thompson scoffed, “make it a one-way ticket and I’ll support it.”
Y/N laughed: “I said to Peggy that you’d say that.”
“If you’re leaving the SSR, what’s next for Chief Thompson and Agent L/N?”, Rose asked curiously.
“The CIA is looking for people with experience to build up their rows”, Jack said, “they were quick to offer us a position.”
“With the new division of responsibility amongst the intelligence services, the SSR won’t be able to act with the level of freedom it was able to in the war and up until September”, Y/N added, “and things in Europe and Asia only seem to become more volatile again. Might be of use to work for the agency that’ll be able to work on the ground.”
She saw Elias’ concerned face. “Do you still have family there?”
“In Germany?”, he shrugged, “I have no idea. Parts of them lived in East Prussia. I haven’t heard from them since late 1944 – so I assume, no. I don’t anymore.”
Y/N’s face fell at the mention of that, again conflicted by the fact that enemies were human, too. She had taught herself to see them primarily as targets, as inherently different to her, to her friends, and therefore, killing them became easier. Was sympathy with a people that had committed atrocities too horrible to even comprehend even possible? Was it morally wrong? It felt nearly impossible to her to reconcile these seemingly juxtaposed positions.
“Y/N, did you come across HYDRA when working in Germany?”, Rose asked to change the topic.
The woman shook her head: “No, fortunately not. I was preoccupied with more – well – normal Nazis, though that is an oxymoron in my opinion.”
“I remind you that you didn’t get to experience the joy of searching for snakes in your foxhole”, Jack interjected, and Y/N knew he did only to redirect the conversation away from her service, for which she was grateful. She had no interest in sharing war stories with the brother of the guy she killed.
“You did not serve in Europe?”, Elias asked, seemingly confused.
“Nah”, Jack pulled a face, “someone had to fight the good fight in the Pacific, too.”
Once they had finished their meal, Jack began to organise for Rose and Elias to get onto the next plane back to L.A., which resulted in them heading to the airport just a short while later. Y/N accompanied the two of them outside to the taxi, followed by Thompson. She hugged Rose goodbye before turning to the scientist.
“Thank you, Elias”, she said, shaking his hand. “You’re a good kid.”
“Madame, I love my brother. Perhaps, I loved him more than any other person in the world. But if one thing was taught to us since our earliest youth, it is that war is brutal. It was the brutality we were taught to idolise. I suppose that means accepting the reality that others will wage war upon us, too.”
She watched him enter the car, wondering where his path would lead him to. She sincerely hoped that, wherever it would, the destination would be more peaceful than his youth had been.
“That’s why you wanted to be the one to escort him”, Jack stated quietly, standing next to her. “To amend.”
“I cannot amend it”, she said, watching the car leave. “But it would seem that he has given me all I can ask for. Acceptance.”
Jack followed her gaze. If that kid was able to accept her decisions, accept her actions – then for God’s sake, why would her father not be capable of doing the same? He would marry Y/N. And despite their relationship being distant, he at least wanted them to not hate each other.

Day 14 Prompt: "If you don't stop now-"
Summary: When Y/N is the first female agent allowed to work the night shift, side by side with Jack Thompson, Peggy and Daniel want to make sure she doesn't miss the hint.
Word Count: 1,108
Category: Fluff, Humor
Requested by @bandshirts-andbooks! This was so fun to write Babs lol, hope you enjoy!
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Ehem."
I scribbled away at the report I was working on, completely ignoring the pointed throat-clearing from my friends on the other side of the desk. The workday was almost over, so if I could just block them out for a little longer-
"If you want to pretend to ignore us, that's fine," said Peggy, her voice light and teasing. I fought back a sigh. "Daniel and I can just have the conversation with ourselves. We know you can hear us."
I made a face, glancing up long enough to make eye contact with both of my friends before slowly and deliberately raising my hands to my ears and plugging them. Since I'd already decided to be this childish, I figured I'd go all out, so I stuck out my tongue too.
Peggy and Daniel shared a look, and then Daniel reached up and grabbed my wrist, pulling one hand away. I glared at him, ready to yank my hand back and continue ignoring them both, but he spoke lowly before I could.
"You know, if you plug your ears, we'll just have to raise our voices so you can hear us."
I narrowed my eyes at him, wordlessly threatening murder, but Daniel didn't blink as he stared back. Finally, after a minute, I sighed.
"Fine. I won't plug my ears. But it's basically five, so maybe you two should just head out. You know, get a jump start on the weekend-"
"And leave you alone with Thompson sooner?"
I turned to glare at Daniel. Like before, he didn't flinch.
"Y/N, listen," started Peggy, leaning forward and looking at me like she was being the reasonable one. "Everyone in this conversation is aware that you have feelings for Thompson. All we're trying to get you to hear is that, since Thompson actually agreed to let you work the night shift with him, making you the first female agent to work a night shift... he might return those feelings."
I sighed, long and hard, through my nose. I put up with so much from these two.
"Great. I've heard you. Now mind your own business, both of you."
"We've long ago made this our business," Peggy responded, an all too pleased smile on her face.
"Yeah, come on," continued Daniel. "I have no idea what you see in Jack, but you clearly like him a lot. And you didn't let up when you saw me and Peggy dancing around each other. So we're not letting this go, either. Not when you spend every minute he's in the room moon-eyed staring at him-"
"Daniel, if you don't stop now-"
"What's going on over here?"
Peggy, Daniel, and I all whirled around at the sound of Jack's voice next to my desk, like kids caught digging in the cookie jar.
"Nothing!" I answered quickly, before whirling back around and glaring at my two friends. "Daniel and Peggy were just saying goodbye before they left for the night."
"Well, then, goodbye. Now get out of here, you two are off the clock and I'm not paying you overtime."
Peggy and Daniel shared a loaded look that I didn't miss, and that I also doubted Jack missed. I rolled my eyes, then the three of us stood.
"You don't have to tell us twice to get us out of here," said Daniel, stretching a little as he got to his feet.
"I sure did," I muttered. He ignored me.
"You two have fun tonight," said Peggy, giving us a pointed smile as she turned away. I narrowed my eyes at her and Daniel as they linked arms and started heading for the doors of the agency together. They didn't look back once, the bastards.
"So... what was all that about?" asked Jack, turning to me the second our friends had cleared the agency doors. I huffed a laugh and turned to face him with a small smile.
"They're still trying to play matchmaker."
"They make any good points?"
I grinned. "Well, they did point out that you must like me if you let me stay to work the late shift with you. They really might be onto something there."
Jack scoffed. "For two of my best detectives they're sure oblivious sometimes."
"I'll say."
Jack and I shared a smile, and then he slowly leaned in until we were almost nose to nose, our breath mingling. His smile widened as his hand moved up to cup my face, and then he closed the rest of the distance and kissed me.
Jack and I had been together for a few months now. It had all started as we worked towards our mutual goal of setting Peggy and Daniel up, mostly so we wouldn't have to watch them exchange longing glances every day at work. In the process, he'd stopping being a dick to me, and I'd realized I actually really liked him. The rest was history.
To be fair to Peggy and Daniel's skills as agents, Jack and I had intentionally been keeping our relationship a secret from the beginning. It wasn't all that high-stakes, but we'd wanted to enjoy the beginning of our relationship without everyone in the office chiming in about it, to our faces or otherwise. We still hadn't told anybody, but our interactions had changed enough for Peggy and Daniel to pick up on the energy. They'd been hounding us both for three weeks to try to set us up, and for our part, Jack and I had just laughed when they weren't looking.
After a few long moments, Jack pulled back, both of us still with grins on our faces.
"So... we gonna tell them?"
I hummed in thought, hopping up to sit on my desk, swinging my legs a little as I fixed Jack with a mischevious smile.
"We probably should. It's gone on long enough that they should probably know."
"...But?"
"But there's still a lot of fun to be had in how we tell them. And, unless some emergency comes in that we have to deal with tonight... we've got plenty of time to figure out the best way we can think of."
"Have I mentioned lately that I love you?" he asked, leaning down to kiss my temple before taking a half step back towards his office. "Because I do."
"I love you too. Now come on, go get a notepad from your office so we can brainstorm ways to mess with our friends."
"Honey, you don't have to tell me twice."
I grinned after the swaggering form of my boyfriend, my heart singing. I really did love him. And this was gonna be fun.

Shake A Leg, I'm Hungry
Tumblr media
Funny how you're always the last to know when you're in a relationship. At least it would have been nice to have been told that you and Jack were dating.
Just pure fluff, there simply isn't enough Jack Thompson love out here, let me help rectify that! Word Count: 902
“I don’t think I’ll ever get over how cold New York is.” You muttered to yourself shaking off your umbrella.
“Y/N, thank goodness you’re here.” Placing your umbrella in the holder next to the door, you turned to see none other than Agent Jack Thompson making a beeline straight for you. Just as you were opening your mouth to respond, Jack grabbed your arm and began tugging you towards his office.
“Really, Agent Thompson, atleast let me remove my hat!” Jack stopped short and with a huff you yanked your arm out of his grasp. He turned to you with an apologetic look and assisted you out of your coat.
“I’m sorry, Y/N, really I am.” Placing your coat on the stand in the corner he gave you another apologetic look over his shoulder.
“What is this all about, Agent Thompson?” You regarded him quizzically as you pulled the pin out of your hat. Jack looked over your shoulder towards the bull-pen and you followed his line of sight were several agents were staring back at you two in interest. “Why are they staring at us?” You whispered reaching out a hand for him to take your hat.
“I promise I’ll explain, in the meantime, please call me Jack.”
“Why on earth,”
“Hey, Thomspon, that the dame you’ve been going on about?” In an instant Jack was at your side cupping your elbow and doing his best to ignore you’re confused expression.
“Agent Weirsby, don’t you have some papers to file.” The agent in question muttered something that sounded like an apology and shuffled off to complete his tasks. Without further explanation Jack steered you through the throng of agents and into his office. As he closed the door you whirled around, folding your arms and pinned him in place with your glare.
“Jack Thompson, you have exactly one minute to explain what on earth is going on.” Running his hand through his hair, Jack looked down to your tapping foot before dragging his eyes up to meet yours. If you were in a more sympathetic mood, your heartstrings might have been pulled by his pitiful expression. When he didn’t say anything you rolled your eyes and made your way to sit in the chair behind his desk. “Alright, Thompson, let’s have it.” Resting your hands on the armrests, you looked up at Jack with narrowed eyes. With a sigh, Jack shoved his hands into his pockets and moved to lean against the desk.
“I’m in a spot, Y/N.”
“Go on.”
“The guys have been giving me, well you know what, over the fact that I’m the last bachelor in the division.” Jack paused to see how you’d react. When you merely stared placidly at him, he continued. “It’s been a nightmare really,” Here he shoved away from the desk and began pacing. “You can’t imagine how many dinners and ‘teas’ I’ve been invited to attend by ‘well meaning’ wives.” Stopping he turned to look at you.
“And by invite you mean, insist that you attend?” You fought to supress a smile, trying your hardest to be sympathetic. Jack groaned.
“If I have to attend one more function where some woman is foisted on me, I’ll lose my mind, Y/N.” Rushing back to the desk, he hopped onto the side next to you, resting his arms on his legs.
“And this involves me, how?” You looked up at him, entirely certain that you were not going to like where this was going.
“To get them off my back, I told them you were my girl.” Clearing his throat, he averted his gaze.
“Well that explains the picture of me on your desk.” You picked up the framed photo of you. It was probably one of the best you’d ever taken. “Where did you get this by the way?” Holding up the picture you looked at Jack curiously.
“Marge.”
“Peggy.” You groaned, placing the photo down. “What do you want from me?” Jack’s eyes darted towards you and you fidgeted under his scrutiny.
“Could you play along for a few minutes?” Cocking your head to the side you gave him a mischevious smile.
“What’s in it for me, Thompson?” Folding his arms, he narrowed his eyes.
“What do you want, Y/N?” Leaning further back in the chair you paused to ponder the question.
“Lunch at the Waldorf.” Jack sputtered.
“The Waldorf?! Do I look like I’m made of money?”
“Next to the Brown Derby, it’s one place in this time I’ve always wanted to go. No skin off my nose though, I’ll just get Howard to take me.” With a shrug, you stood and stepped towards the door. Hanging his head, Jack stopped you with a gentle hand on your arm.
“Fine.” Slowly you turned to look at him.
“Fine?” You bent your head slightly to see if you could meet his eye. Jack glanced up at you through his lashes.
“Lunch at the Waldorf.”
“Today,” With a groan Jack released your arm. Rushing forward you rested at elbow on his shoulder. “Just think about the splash we’ll make, Jack. You the dutiful boyfriend taking your dame out for lunch.” He glanced up at you begrudgingly.
“You make a point.”
“Great.” You flashed him a winning smile and gave his shoulder a solid thump. Pulling away you headed towards the door. “Shake a leg, Jack Your girlfriend’s hungry.”

Shenanigans
Tumblr media
Words: 812
Pairing: Jack Thompson x Reader
A/N: I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MAN OMG!
Request: Hey! Can I send in a request? Maybe Jack Thompson or Captain Kirk with the prompt "Of course we're best friends. No one else would put up with our shenanigans."? No worries if you're not feeling it! Hope you're doing wonderful! - @captainsophiestark
______________________
“Remind me why we’re here again?” Jack’s voice came from beside you.
“To work?” you replied as you shifted in the car seat.
“This is the most boring stakeout I’ve ever been on.”
“Are you calling me boring?” you joked, turning towards him.
“The company isn’t boring but the stakeout is.” he re-phrased “Happy now?”
“You know me. Of course I am.” you fixed your eyes back on the building in front of you “How about we just go inside?”
“Y/N, no.”
“Why? We’re clearly getting so much information from here.” you said sarcastically.
“And how would we go inside? What would we even do?”
“We could pretend to be looking for directions. Look.” you pulled out a map from the glove compartment “We can just say we’re looking for somewhere random on the map and hope they give us directions.”
“You forget they’ve seen me before.”
“Just shove some sunglasses on and take off your jacket. Perfect disguise.”
The man rolled his eyes “How the hell are we best friends?”
“No one else would put up with our shenanigans so we have each other.”
“Our shenanigans huh? Please as if I contribute-”
“Remember when it was your idea to prank the whole office with the out of date milk-”
“Alright, alright.” he tried to shush you with a smile on his face “but you agreed to help me.” he pointed his finger at you playfully.
“That’s what I mean, our shenanigans. We couldn’t really do it without each other.”
“How did we even end up friends in the first place?” he questioned how it all started but soon remembered. “That’s right, you hated me.”
“No, I’m pretty sure that you hated me. You couldn’t stand to be in the same room as me. Saw me as dirt, the same way you first reacted to Peggy.”
“I’ve never seen you as dirt. It just took me way longer than it should have to realise that women can work just as well, or even better than men in this sort of work.”
“Thanks Jack, you’re a real charmer there.”
“At least I’m admitting I was wrong.” he nudged you slightly “That’s a big one for me.”
“I suppose.” you laughed remembering the early days “then we worked together a bunch and practically became inseparable.”
“I wouldn’t change it for the world. I think you’re probably one of the best colleagues I’ve worked with.”
“Alright, no need to go that far Chief Thompson. That’d be favoritism in the workplace.”
“I think they already know we're friends Y/N.God some of them even think we’re something more.”
You genuinely laughed “I knew it was only a matter of time. Hey why can’t a man and woman be friends without people assuming they’re dating each other? If it were two men or two women they wouldn’t bat an eyelid.”
“I suppose it’s because they can’t see themselves being friends with the opposite sex without anything else happening.”
“Gross.” you huffed.
There was a silence as the two of you watched the building but Jack was the first to break it. “How about we grab dinner?”
“Are you asking me on a date!”
“Y/N, god no. I’m just hungry alright? Would it even be that bad if I did?”
“Did you not just hear our last conversation?”
“I did alright. I like you Y/N but we’re friends.” he was panicking, he did like you slightly more than a friend sometimes but to him your friendship was more important and he’d never want to do anything to jeopardize it.
“Best friends I think you’d find.” you smiled at the man sincerely, you liked the man, of course you how could you not? There had been nights the two of you had been in the office late and you’d fallen asleep and he’d tucked you up. He’d saved your life on multiple occasions and you’d saved his. He’d also been very protective of you when other men had made seedy moves on you. Honestly, you’d love to be in a relationship with him and it was probably the reason none of your relationships had worked out so far.
“We can go for food, or a date or whatever if we get this stakeout over and done with sooner rather than later.” you offered.
His heart bounced out of his chest. What did you just say? “How about we just go inside then? Get this over with?”
“I love the change of heart.” you passed the man his sunglasses and gave him a tap on the shoulder before getting out of the car.
He scrambled out and flung his jacket from his body frantically before popping the glasses on and linking his arm with yours. “Let's go ask for directions darling.”
You laughed, you had to admit you did love undercover work with him “Sure thing.”

oOoOo
The subway platform was crowded as always, but one tall, blonde mop of hair stood out to you just a few feet away. He looked as smug as ever, even while glancing down at his watch in what appeared to be exasperation.
"Thompson?" you called out in confirmation before you could stop yourself.
His ears perked up and his eyes widened as he identified your voice, taking a few steps towards you. "y/l/n." he addressed, but quickly flinched. It was then you noticed the two figures that flanked him; in particular, how the woman swatted her hand at his shoulder.
"Jack! Is that anyway to address a lady?" she exclaimed, shaking her head.
"Sorry, Ma." he spoke over his shoulder. "Uh, y/n, h-how are you?" he asked, somewhat taken aback. "Ma, Pa, this is y/n y/l/n, we work together. y/n, these are my parents."
"It's really nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Thompson." you said, reaching your hand out to shake hands with his parents.
As she shook your hand tightly, Jack's mother's face lit up with recognition. "Oh, y/n! Jack has told us so much about you!"
You couldn't help but chuckle, knowing your tense work relationship with their son. "I'm sure all bad things."
"On the contrary, dear." she laughed herself. "All we hear is 'y/n this, y/n that.' How smart you are, talented as agent, how you've saved his skin on a number of occasions."
"Really now?" you preened, crossing your arms across your chest, unable to hold back your smirk.
Jack's face burned a bright red as he tried to take a calming breath. "No, Ma, don't tell her I said that about her." he ground out.
"No, no, please continue, Mrs. Thompson." you said.
This was a side of Jack you never thought you'd see, and you didn't want it to end now. Sadly, before she could continue you saw your train approaching. Your shoulders sagged in disappointment, but you noticed that the Thompsons also looked ready to board the same train.
"Are you heading uptown as well?" Mrs. Thompson asked, a hint of excitement and scheming in her eyes. "Would you like to join us for dinner, dear?"
Off to the side you could see Jack's jaw drop in shock, his face just returning to its normal shade. But despite that, you quickly nodded your head and linked arms with his mother. "I would love to!"
Well, this would be interesting.

Necessary Evils (Tales From The SSR)
Tumblr media
Summary: As they await news of Michael Carter's surgery, (Y/N) and Jack discuss her unwanted connection to Arnim Zola and the feel of foreboding that the former Hydra doctor left in his wake.
Pairing: Jack Thompson X Fem!Reader, Peggy Carter X Daniel Sousa, Edwin Jarvis X Ana Jarvis
Word Count: 2.7k
Warnings/Disclaimers: None
A/N: Hi there! This week's surprise one-shot is gonna explore a little of Specs' whereabouts in the aftermath of Bucky Barnes' death in The First Avenger and we're gonna have some great moments between her and Jack, so buckle up! Thank you for reading, I hope you all enjoy!
Necessary Evils January 1948 Los Angeles County Hospital, Los Angeles (Previous One-Shot)
“I got you some tea from the hospital’s cafeteria.” (Y/N) was pulled out of her silent reverie by Jack taking a seat beside her and offering her a disposable paper cup, the concerned gleam in her boyfriend’s blue eyes accompanied by the smallest of smiles for her benefit. “Earl Grey and two teaspoons of honey; I know how much it helps when you get one of your stress headaches.”
(Y/N), touched by his thoughtful gesture, reached over and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, sweetheart.” She reached for the cup and after taking a long sip, she sat back in the uncomfortable waiting room chair with a frustrated sigh. “I hate this. The longer the surgery takes, the more I’d like to burst into that operating room and re-arrest that Nazi bastard before he tries anything funny with Michael.”
Beside her, Jack nodded as he patiently listened to her threats and threw Peggy – who was anxiously pacing across the hospital waiting room while Daniel unsuccessfully attempted to talk her into sitting down – a furtive glance before replying, “I don’t think this Zola guy would risk a lifetime imprisonment or execution by trying to bump off Carter mid-surgery, Specs. I mean, Stark and half a dozen MP’s are watchin’ him and the neurosurgeons like hawks as we speak, and he’s not gonna jeopardize the sweet deal the JIOA cut for him for something as low-stakes as this.”
“I wouldn’t call any of this ‘low-stakes,’ Flyboy,” (Y/N) murmured, looking around the fully-occupied waiting room and reflexively tightening her grip on her cup of tea; she, Jack, Peggy, Daniel, and the Jarvises, along with over a dozen uniformed SOE officers and SSR officials, were gathered at Los Angeles County Hospital for the long-awaited surgery that would theoretically restore Michael Carter’s mind to what it was before the brainwashing that Hydra subjected him to during the war. Several of the SOE officers served alongside Michael and had volunteered to travel from England to be with their fellow soldier in his time of need, but Peggy was understandably the most concerned of them all; Michael made his younger sister promise not to contact their parents about his staged death in 1941 and sudden reappearance until it was confirmed that the dangerous surgery was a success, wanting to prevent Harrison and Amanda Carter another heartbreak on the off-chance that Arnim Zola and the team of neurosurgeons failed and he passed away on the operating table. The Carter siblings spent several minutes alone with one another before they wheeled Michael into the operating room and since then, Peggy hadn’t been able to stay still. I’d be the same way if Freddie’s life were in the hands of that Nazi son of a bitch, (Y/N) thought to herself and one of her hands moved upwards to caress the locket containing her deceased brother’s photograph as she sympathetically watched Peggy continue to pace.
“You know what I mean.” Jack scooted closer to her side and when she finally looked over at him, the look of concern in his blue eyes was as prominent as ever. “Look, I get why Peggy’s taking all this personally…but I can’t figure why you are, too. You can talk to me, baby…” His hand moved to rest on her shoulder, and (Y/N) could feel the comforting warmth of his touch through the thin material of her blouse. “Whatever you’ve gotta say, I’m here. And if you don’t feel up to talkin’ just yet, then I’ll still be right here with you.”
(Y/N) lowered her gaze to her lap and spent several moments mustering the strength to speak, her voice wavering as she recalled some of the darkest moments of the war, the ones that she wished she could forget forever but sadly never could. “I helped capture Zola. I was deployed with the Howlies in the Swiss Alps, and we were tasked with finding and capturing Zola to interrogate him about Schmidt’s plans. Morita intercepted several radio transmissions from Hydra and after I decoded them, we had confirmation that Zola was on a train scheduled to travel through the same mountain pass that we were navigating. Steve, Bucky, Gabe and I used a zip chord to get onto the train while it was still in motion; Steve and Bucky left to secure the front train cars while Gabe and I stayed on the roof as their back-up, and that’s…that’s when…”
Her boyfriend rested his elbows on his knees and clasped his hands together as he looked over at her. “That was the mission that Sergeant Barnes didn’t survive, wasn’t it?” She nodded, her eyes still diligently trained on the dark blue material of her trousers, but she could feel his compassionate gaze on her as he continued. “Barnes died a hero to his country. The bastard turned against Schmidt to save his own skin, and Cap and the SSR were able to end Hydra and the war. That’s gotta bring you and the rest of the Howling Commandos some satisfaction, right?”
“It did…” (Y/N) admitted, but she tightly pursed her lips as she recalled the aftermath of the fateful mission to capture Zola alive. “Right up until his interrogation, that is.”
The tunnels below the London headquarters of the Strategic Scientific Reserve echoed with the sound of (Y/N)’s standard-issue heels making contact with the stone floor as she approached one of many interrogation cells; her fingers tightly clutched the classified file in her hands in an effort to contain her swirling emotions but judging by the apprehensive expressions on the stationed MP’s faces whenever she passed by, she was doing a poor job of masking her true feelings.
“As requested, a copy of my mission report to D.C.,” (Y/N) announced as she came to a stop before Colonel Phillips, and she arched a brow at the tray of food he was holding. “Hungry?”
“Zola surrendered and didn’t try to do himself in with cyanide, so I figured that the usual interrogation techniques might not work on this wack-job. He should count himself lucky; I’ve got over a dozen SSR agents chomping at the bit to finally get their hands on a live Hydra operative.”
Just as Colonel Phillips balanced the tray on one hand to reach for the file, (Y/N) tightened her grip on it and blurted out, “Colonel, I need to go in there with you.”
“Agent (Y/L/N), you and the rest of the 107th tactical team have my condolences for Sergeant Barnes’ death, but I can’t allow you any access to-”
“Respectfully, Colonel, you’re the commanding officer of the Strategic Scientific Reserve; you can directly authorize an agent access to as many high-security prisoners as you deem necessary, correct? I’m only requesting access to one.”
“You don’t get to tell me how to do my job, Agent.” The sharp tone in the older man’s voice conflicted with the uncharacteristic compassion emanating from his dark brown gaze. “I’ll authorize you access to the observation room, but that’s it.”
(Y/N)’s jaw clenched as she forced herself to remain composed, but there was nothing she could do to keep her voice from trembling with barely-restrained grief. “Colonel, the man on the other side of that door is the reason my friend and God knows how many Allied soldiers are dead. I…I need to do all I can to ensure that he gives us all the intel we need to take Hydra down. I need to help end this war once and for all.”
In contrast with the strained working relationships he shared with Peggy and Howard, Colonel Chester Phillips seemed to have a soft spot for (Y/N) since the moment she was loaned out to the SSR from the OSS; Peggy often speculated that it was because she reminded him of his granddaughter back home and although she’d never admit it aloud, (Y/N) considered him to be the father-figure she’d always longed for. They got along with one another but more importantly, they shared a mutual respect and it was that respect that seemingly compelled the older man into finally giving her a relenting nod. With a brief command from Colonel Phillips, the MP stationed nearby opened the door and after taking a deep breath, (Y/N) followed the colonel into the interrogation cell.
A dim light from an overhead fixture illuminated the sparsely decorated cell, and the Swiss doctor whirled around to face them both as they sat down at the interrogation table; a surge of pleasure rippled through (Y/N) when she observed his colorless face and the way his hands anxiously fiddled with the sleeves of his prisoner’s uniform, and she maintained eye-contact with him as she crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in her seat. Colonel Phillips set the tray of food down onto the table and spun it around before gesturing towards the unoccupied chair across from them. “Sit down.”
With obvious trepidation, Zola followed his order and sat, his brow arching as he looked down at the steak, potatoes, broccoli and glass of milk laid out before him. “What is this?”
“Steak.”
“What is in it?”
“Cow!” Colonel Phillips looked incredulously between (Y/N) and Zola. “Doctor, do you realize how difficult it is to get ahold of a prime cut like that out here?”
The Swiss doctor shrugged. “I don’t eat meat.”
“Why not?”
Taken aback by (Y/N)’s pointed question, Zola fidgeted in his seat and replied, “It disagrees with me.”
“How about cyanide? Does that give you the rumbly tummy, too?”
While Zola’s brow furrowed in confusion, Colonel Phillips spun the tray back around and used the utensils to begin cutting into the steak as (Y/N) continued. “Every Hydra agent that we’ve tried to take alive has crunched a little pill before we can stop him, but not you.”
The colonel hummed in agreement as he feasted on the tray of food, raising his fork in the air and glancing over at (Y/N) with a look of exaggerated curiosity on his wrinkled face. “Here’s my brilliant theory, Agent (Y/L/N): he wants to live.”
“You’re trying to intimidate me, Colonel.” Zola’s beady eyes flicked between them as a sheen of sweat slowly covered his balding head, obviously growing anxious under the strain of his imprisonment and their unconventional interrogation.
Colonel Phillips scoffed. “We bought you dinner. Why don’t we cut to the chase and show Doctor Zola here what’s in that file?”
While the colonel cut the steamed potatoes into quarters, (Y/N) withdrew a single piece of paper from the file and slid it across the table, her red-lacquered nails drumming on the tabletop as she watched the Swiss doctor read the typed mission report aloud. “‘…and in exchange for his full cooperation, Doctor Zola is being remanded to Switzerland…’”
“I sent that message to Washington this morning. Of course, it was encoded.” (Y/N) leaned forward, resting her elbows on the tabletop, and fixed Zola with an unwavering stare. “You guys haven’t broken those codes, have you? That would be awkward.”
Zola’s expression remained neutral, but the lines between his brows were visibly deeper and she could practically see the wheels turning inside his head while he carefully considered his predicament. “Schmidt will know this is a lie.”
“He’s going to kill you anyway, doc.” Colonel Phillips punctuated his blunt reply with a shrug. “You’re a liability. You know more about Schmidt than anyone and the last guy you cost us was Captain Rogers’ closest friend, so I wouldn’t count on the very best of protection.” The sound of Bucky’s scream as he fell from the train and into the deep chasm below played on a loop in (Y/N)’s mind, forcing her to dig her nails into the skin of her palms to keep from reacting, an action she was no stranger to as a woman serving in a secretive branch of the Allied armed forces but one that she hated having to perform in the wake of her friend’s death. “It’s you or Schmidt; it’s just the hand you’ve been dealt.”
The Swiss doctor, taking note of the colonel’s grim tone and the obvious tension in (Y/N)’s shoulders, huffed out a humorless chuckle before nodding once and stating, “Schmidt believes he walks in the footsteps of the gods. Only the world itself will satisfy him.”
“You do realize that’s nuts, don’t you?”
Shaking his head, Zola huffed out a humorless chuckle at the colonel’s comment. “The sanity of the plan is of no consequence.”
“And why’s that?”
“Because he can do it!”
(Y/N), losing patience with Zola and his feeble attempts at providing them with answers, snapped out, “What’s his target?”
When Zola’s beady eyes focused on hers, a shiver of foreboding traveled up (Y/N)’s spine and it took every ounce of willpower she possessed not to look away as he simply replied, “His target…is everywhere.”
“He told us everything we needed to know; the exact coordinates of Schmidt’s secret base in the Alps, a detailed run-down of Schmidt’s plan to bomb over half a dozen of the world’s largest cities, how much time we had before Hydra’s scheduled attack on New York…and within twenty-four hours, Schmidt was dead and Hydra was finally defeated.” (Y/N)’s fingers were wrapped tightly around her now-empty cup and she was leaning against Jack’s side, taking comfort in her boyfriend’s sturdy form as she spoke in the lowest tone she could and kept a wary eye on Peggy across the waiting room. “But there was something about his eyes, like he knew some big secret that the colonel and I could never understand, and I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something we missed.” Swallowing thickly, she finally looked over at Jack and met his empathetic gaze. “That’s crazy, right?”
Jack shook his head. “Definitely not. Listen, Specs, we might’ve both served on opposite ends of the world, but all the horrible shit we saw and lived through during the war? It hasn’t broken us. We’re still here, and our experiences matter because they’re what shaped us into the people we are today: people who dedicated their lives to making this screwed-up world a better place.” The corner of his lip curved into a small smile as he affectionately bumped the side of her head with his own. “You were the one who taught me that.”
Looking into his clear blue eyes, (Y/N) felt the stiffness in her shoulders begin to melt away and she couldn’t fight the smile that slowly made its way onto her face. “I’m a pretty good teacher, aren’t I?”
“Oh, hands-down, the smartest and most gorgeous teacher I’ve ever had.” Her boyfriend’s flirtatious wink forced (Y/N) to mask her giggle with a cough and flash several of the waiting room’s occupants an apologetic look while he quietly continued. “If you think that Zola’s up to no good, then I believe you. There’s no easy way to handle a situation as delicate as Operation Paperclip; all we can do is our best and in this case, the best that we can do is to keep a close eye on him and every other scumbag Nazi scientist that they’ve recruited. How’s that sound, Specs?”
She took a deep breath and gave him a firm nod. “Like a pretty solid game plan, Flyboy.”
Before either of them could say another word, the double doors leading into the hospital’s operating room swung open and Howard strode into the waiting room, a grin on his face as he made a bee-line over to where Peggy stood. “Michael’s been wheeled into a recovery room and all preliminary signs are pointin’ to a successful operation. Your brother’s gonna be just fine, Peg.”
The younger woman’s anxious expression was overtaken by a look of overwhelming relief and she didn’t hesitate to throw her arms around the inventor in a tight hug. The rest of the waiting room collectively released the grateful breath that they’d been holding for hours and while the SOE officers and SSR officials talked amongst themselves, Jack wrapped an arm around (Y/N)’s shoulders and pressed a chaste kiss onto her temple; she closed her eyes and as she took comfort in her boyfriend’s supportive touch, she spoke a silent word of thanks to the universe for Michael’s successful surgery and for sending her a supportive and understanding partner in the form of Jack Grant Thompson.

Y/N woke up screaming.
She woke up screaming most nights, which is why she sacrificed extra money to live on her own, why she almost ruined her friendship with Peggy because she couldn't accept the offer of living with her. It's why she was terrified to spend the night with her boyfriend, Jack. There had been countless nights over the nine months where she had caught herself almost asleep, about to spend the night, before she realized what the hell was happening and left, despite Jack's protests.
"I can sleep in the other room,"
He thought it was about modesty.
She always made up excuses to leave, kissing him as passionately as she dared to try and assuage his mind. It didn't change the fact that at the end of the day, she was terrified that she was going to have one of those stupid nightmares and wake up screaming, and man would that scare Jack off.
She knew everyone had nightmares. But not everyone had these kinds of nightmares.
"You're not coming with me!" Steve yelled at her. They were in the plane on the way to rescue Bucky and the rest of the POWs Hydra had taken. Bucky's family had taken Y/N in when she was young, her father having never been around and her mother dying from some sort of illness.
"Bucky is my brother! I'm not leaving him!" She knew he would never leave her, would never give up if it had been her in his place.
"You're not apart of this!" Steve shook his head at her, and she frowned.
"Just because I'm not in the army doesn't meant that I can't help!" She cried. "I've been with you guys since the beginning! I'm just as much apart of this as you!" Steve wasn't hearing it.
In real life, she had grabbed a parachute and jumped out of the plane after Steve. In real life she had snuck into the compound quickly. In real life, she went straight to Bucky while Steve was left behind fighting. Her dream showed none of this. Her subconscious didn't care.
"Bucky! Oh my God!" She screamed, going to his side. He barely moved his head, and was quickly trying to free him.
"Y/N?" He muttered, voice hoarse and body pale.
"What did they do to you?" She questioned, still trying to free the restraints.
"You have to go," He said as she got one arm done. He sat up, grabbing her hand. "Please, they're coming," He begged, but she wasn't listening.
"Steve's taking care of it, don't worry-"
In her dream, every night, they shoot Bucky. In her dream, they take her and do unspeakable things.
In real life Bucky wasn't shot, just electrocuted. In real life, she was knocked out quickly. In real life, she was barely conscious when these things happened. In real life, she can only remember these things happening when she goes to sleep.
In her dream she is vividly living through it.
Sometimes she wakes up when they shoot Bucky. She wakes up and has to remind herself that Steve was successful a few months later. That they only had Y/N for half the time they had Bucky, that Bucky didn't die there, he died later on and now Steve is dead and-
It usually doesn't work.
She knows Hydra did experiments on her. She's still finding out about those.
~
"Good morning," Peggy smiles as Y/N steps into the office, putting her things down on her desk. They both know that the only reason they are the only two girls in the office is because the government felt bad about the damage that wreaked havoc on their lives.
Welcome to the 40s.
"Good morning," Y/N tried to be smiley, but she wasn't getting enough sleep to do this over and over again everyday.
There was no way she could tell people what she was going through. No one would understand.
"Jack came in a couple minutes ago, went straight to the back. He seems to be a bit on the wrong side this morning." Peggy was still smiling, but this information made Y/N want to scream.
Of course Jack was upset this morning. The fight they had gotten into at three A.M. was definitely responsible for that.
"What happened?" Peggy asked, mood immediately shifting as she took in the look on her best friend's face. Peggy was insanely good at reading people, and after all that the two had gone through she could read Y/N like a book.
"Well," Y/N briefly thought about lying, but one look at her best friend's face told her she had to tell the truth. "It's a long story." She tired, but Peggy just glared.
"It's a good thing our desks are right next to each other, isn't it?" Peggy questioned, already prepared for that answer. Y/N nodded, taking her spot across from Peggy.
"Jack wanted me to spend the night last night, since it was so late. And as much as I want to, there's just too much going on right now." Y/N tried not to think of the look on Jack's face when she had slipped up, when her eyes went red and her hands began to glow.
He was terrified.
"That's not a long story." Peggy commented as she began to go through the paperwork stacked on her desk. Y/N took a deep breath and avoided Peggy's eyes.
"I'm having nightmares." Maybe if she told part of the truth, Peggy would let her off the hook.
"You've had nightmares since you met Jack. What else is going on?" She looked at Y/N then, squinting as if she were trying to preform an X-Ray with her naked eyes. "Are you," She led off, eyes briefly trailing to Y/N's midsection.
"No!" She shrieked, probably too loudly, because the other men turned to stare. "It's not that." Y/N looked down at her hands, the ones that had started to glow. The ones that scared Jack.
She never wanted to hurt Jack. She knew he would never hurt her, that he would try and kill anyone for putting their hands on her, but she never thought she would see the look of fear in his eyes when he looked at her.
"Then what is it?" Peggy asked, still going through the papers. Y/N began to copy the motion, hoping that if she were doing something normal this next part would seem better somehow.
"Do you remember when I was captured by Hydra?" Y/N asked. Of course she knew Peggy remembered. They both knew that even though they never talked about what happened over the war, they remembered every detail.
"Yes," Peggy answered, slowing her work. She knew that what Y/N was about to say was important, much more important than nightmares.
"They were trying to recreate the serum. They tested it on Bucky, but we never found out if it actually worked." She took a deep breath, because she was about to drop a truth that she probably should have told Peggy, and Steve, when she was first rescued. "They tested it on me too."
She had whispered the words, but she knew Peggy heard them. Even as she was silent, Y/N knew the sentence had gotten across.
"I'm sorry," She whispered, sounding confused. "I'm not sure I understand. You were tested on by Hydra?"
"From what I remember." Y/N answered, not looking at her friend.
"Why didn't you tell us?" The us in that situation was clear, and Y/N tried to block out the fact that half of that group was dead.
"One of you already knew." Y/N tried to be funny, but it was clear it didn't land.
"Why are you telling me this now?" Peggy tried not to sound brash, but she was confused as to why Y/N was bringing this up now, when she was supposed to be talking about the fight with Jack.
"Something has been happening." Y/N closed her eyes, no longer feeling the need to pretend she was doing work. "It started when the nightmares got worse, and then there was a tingling in my hands." She looked down, willing the red power to come to the surface just a bit. She lifted a hand to show it, pulling it back once Peggy saw. Her eyes widened, and Y/N couldn't look at her anymore.
"Y/N,"
"I don't know what's happening to me." She whispered, tears in her eyes. "And last night, Jack was upset that I couldn't stay the night. I started to tell him about the nightmares, but I got too emotional and it happened." She took a deep breath, looking up and away.
"What did he do?" She asked, and Y/N just shook her head.
"He was terrified." She shrugged, as if that were the obvious answer. Her throat was closing with emotion and her eyes were beginning to well with tears.
"Of you?" Peggy asked, because she was sure there was no way Jack actually was scared of Y/N. She had seen the way he looked at her, like she was the only person in the world. Peggy would have never thought that Jack would even think about being afraid of Y/N in any way.
"Yes. And who wouldn't be?" Y/N got up, not able to stay at her desk any longer.
"Are you sure that he was afraid of you?" Peggy questioned, sure that Y/N must've been mistaken.
"What else would it have been?" Y/N asked. Peggy didn't have the answer, but soon the Chief was coming over anyway. They had to end the conversation quickly, but one look from Peggy told Y/N this wasn't going away.
"I need you two to go on a stakeout." He had said, and Y/N just stared, waiting for the rest of that assignment. "We need more information about one of the targets. Here's the file, read in the car." He dropped the file on Y/N's desk, and she just nodded, watching the chief walk back to his office.
"Looks like we're going out today."
~
"Where's Y/N?" Jack had asked when he had finally gotten out the the interrogation the Chief had made him do. He had gotten to the office early in the morning, hoping to catch when Y/N had come in. He desperately needed to talk to her, but he knew better than to follow her home last night.
"Why, did you not get enough last night?" One of the guys asked, and Jack rolled his eyes. Him and Y/N had tried to keep their relationship a secret, but it was obvious after awhile. Although they weren't big on PDA, the boys still loved to give Jack shit.
"I know you want to live vicariously through me, Jenkins, so I regret to inform you that I actually need to talk to her." Jack shot back, not in the mood for a witty comeback.
"Chief sent her and Peggy on a stakeout." Daniel told Jack, knowing that his friend was going to be pissed.
"Where?" Jack was packing his stuff when the Chief came out.
"You're not going anywhere, butterfly boy." Jack tried not to show his anger at the nickname. "You didn't finish your paperwork." He nodded to the papers on Jack's desk.
"You only told me to do the interrogation." Jack said, knowing that everyone was watching now. "You don't understand, I seriously need to talk-"
"I don't care," Chief Dooley admitted, making Jack have to take a deep breath. "You're at work, Thompson. You can talk to your girlfriend later." Everyone went back to their own work with a couple chuckles, and Jack walked to his desk, trying to forget about his personal problems.
"Why do you need to talk to Y/N so bad?" Daniel asked as he walked over to Jack's desk. The two had gotten closer more recently, and although he knew he shouldn't ask, he wanted to be a good friend.
"We got in an argument last night, and I did something I shouldn't have." Jack knew that it was miscommunication, that the look of fear he displayed was not received in the way he meant it.
He wasn't afraid for himself. He was concerned for Y/N. It was clear she wasn't okay, that she was terrified, and he would do anything to take that away from her. He wasn't afraid of her. He was afraid for her.
But of course he couldn't tell Daniel about that.
"And that's urgent?" Daniel didn't want to be rude, it just came out. He had never heard that the couple had gotten into an argument that couldn't wait before - they always put work first and figured their own problems out later.
"It's complicated." Jack muttered, starting the paperwork.
"Sounds like it." Jack closed his eyes and cracked his neck, trying not to take a jab at Daniel.
"How's Peggy?" He asked instead of saying something he knew he would regret.
"Ha ha." Daniel rolled his eyes and walked away, knowing he wasn't getting the full story.
Jack needed to talk to Y/N. He had to explain.
~
"This is a fool's work." Peggy complained as they sat outside of the cafe. They were waiting to see Michael Carlye come out of the office, because as soon as he did they were to grab a file from his desk and leave.
"Well, at least it gives us something to do." Y/N muttered as she took a sip of her drink.
"Maybe you should talk to Jack." Peggy offered, staring at the door still.
"Oh yeah, I'm sure that terrified look on his face really meant 'I want to talk all about this.'" Y/N didn't wait for Peggy's response, because all the sudden Michael was walking out of the building, whistling and not even knowing that the SSR was out for him.
Wordlessly, the two got up, leaving their drinks and a couple dollars before walking across the street.
"Let's do this quickly," Peggy grumbled as they slid right by security. The only perk of being a woman in the 40s - no one suspects shit.
"What were you saying about quick?" Y/N teased as they waltzed right into the unlocked office. "I can't believe he just keeps this shit out like that." She said, grabbing the file out of the first drawer in his desk. "I mean seriously, this guy is," She trailed off as she heard Peggy whipping out her gun, turning to see a man in the doorway with a pistol pointing toward them.
"Drop the file, and I'll pretend I never saw you." The man said with a gross sneer.
"Drop the gun and I won't shoot you." Peggy fired back, gun steady in her hands.
"That wasn't an option." The man said. Just as he shot, Y/N dropped the file and put her hands up, not even thinking as she stopped the bullet just before it hit Peggy.
"Shit," Y/N whispered, not even sure how she had done it. "What do I do?" Just as she had asked Peggy, the man tried to turn around and yell, but Y/N shot out her other hand and pulled the door shut.
"What are you?" The man screamed, and Y/N just blinked, not sure how to answer that.
"What do I do?" She asked Peggy again. They knew it was only a matter of time before someone came and tried to see what the commotion was.
"We have to run!" Peggy said, but she was still holding the gun up.
"He knows!" Y/N cried, dropping the bullet. There was no way to spin the tale of her stopping a bullet midair.
"You're the only one that knows," Peggy walked forward, standing in front of Y/N. "So if this gets out, I will find you, and we will ruin your life." The girls heard shouting and they knew their time was up.
"Out the window." Y/N instructed, using her new found magic to flip up the window and was jumping out. Peggy jumped out as well, and just as she was about to shut the door Y/N remember the file. She quickly reached out with her magic and grabbed it, sliding it through the window as Peggy shut it.
"What a nice office view." Y/N said, realizing they were a foot away from a narrow alley.
"Back to the office?" Peggy offered, slipping into the alley.
"Do we have to?" Y/N asked, knowing what was waiting at the office.
"Well," Peggy started, but they heard yelling from behind them. The girls turned to see some men coming at them, the dumbs who tried to shoot them in the front leading the group.
"Shit," Y/N muttered, because they were trapped. She could use her powers, but she didn't know exactly what that would entail.
"You have to do something," Peggy muttered, because they were very out numbered.
"I don't know what I can do." Y/N admitted, but when the first gunshot went off she caught it, anger beginning to boil in her veins. Without thinking, going based off her rage, she pushed her other hand toward the group and let herself explode. The two girls watched as the men blinked before opening their eyes, pupils red.
"What did you do?" Peggy asked, walking toward them.
"No idea." Y/N ran past them, not sure how long the men would be out.
~
"She's here." Daniel muttered as he walked past Jack's desk, trying not to laugh as Jack practically fell out of his chair trying to turn around. He got up and quickly walked over to her, feeling bad for thanking God that she was looking for the Chief and not looking at him.
"Y/N," He called when she was close enough that he knew she wouldn't run. He watched her eyes widen as she turned to him. He was about to speak when he realized she was close to tears.
"Jack, I'm so sorry," She started, moving her hand to grab his arm but then aborting the motion, looking in his eyes for fear.
"What happened?" He asked, looking over to Peggy, who had a barely contained look of shock and something else that Jack didn't have the time for right now. "Why are you sorry?" That got her to stop in her tracks. Peggy continued on, probably to debrief the Chief. Y/N was thankful they had thought of their alibi in the car.
"What do you mean?" She looked genuinely confused and slightly scared, and Jack grabbed her hand and walked her to an interrogation room for privacy. "Jack, I'm so sorry, I-"
"For what?" He asked again, confused was to why Y/N was apologizing. He was the one that needed to apologize.
"Everything," A couple tears fell down her cheeks and she quickly wiped her cheeks, not looking at him.
"Sweetheart," Jack tried to smile to somehow make Y/N feel better. "I need to apologize." He admitted, putting his hands on her face and pulling her face up to make her look at him.
"It's all my fault," She said as way of explanation, causing Jack to just shake his head. "I didn't know-"
"Y/N," Jack grabbed her hand, pulling her close and trying to get her to calm down. "I wasn't afraid of whatever is going on," He cringed at his word choice.
"That's the problem; I don't know what's going on." She whispered, sounding unhinged. Jack understood why, but he was fighting not to tale a step back. Y/N would never hurt him - he knew this. He trusted her.
"We can figure it out, I promise." He put a hand on her cheek, trying to figure out the best way to comfort her. "Whatever is going on, I'll be here." He hoped she believed him, because he knew he meant it.
"Right," She smiled, but it didn't seem full. "About, um, that," She looked toward the door, knowing that right now Peggy was telling the Chief all about their fake story.
"We'll work on it." Jack smirked, reading her mind. She nodded, tilting her head up and letting him press his lips to hers.

You look distracted, Hunny // Smut
Pairings: Jack Thompson x Stark!Reader
Pronounces: They/Them
Warnings: Sex p/v, dirty talk, bottom!Jack
Summary: Peggy Carter asks Y/N Stark to be a distraction at the gala where they have a mission. Y/N is distracting, but doesn't follow the plan
Word count: 1553
A/N: This is the filthiest I have ever written
Tumblr media
When Peggy came to them and asked to help with a secret mission, they expected to be a watchdog, not a distraction
"Please tell me why I'm doing this again" Y/N was walking around the Gala, trying to locate their objective
"Because he needs to be distracted so Mr. Jarvis and Dottie won't get seen with each other" Y/N heard Peggy say from the comms
"You owe me one, Peg," They said walking towards the bar as they spotted agent Thompson "Whiskey, please," They said to the mixologist standing behind the bar
"You here alone?" Y/N turned their head to the side to see Agent Thompson sipping on his glass
"Yes," They gave him a seductive smile and bashed their eyelashes just enough to let his mind wander "And you? You look like someone who'd bring a date"
"I'm here alone, darling" They swore they heard an accent some place under his voice
"What a shame. Such a handsome man as yourself shouldn't be alone at such a beautiful Gala" They said before taking a sip of their drink
"Don't flirt with him, Y/N" They heard Sousa say
"You know, you look oddly familiar" Y/N got off her stool and stepped closer to the blond agent
"Do I now?" They still had that seductive smile on their lips "Is that a good or bad thing?"
"I don't know yet" It's a good thing Y/N knows agent Thompson, but it's not a good thing when it's the other way around "Y/N Stark"
"I know my name, what's yours?" Hopefully, he didn't have the file on them. He properly doesn't as it's classified, but still, he's an SSR agent
"Jack Thompson" It wasn't a part of the plan, but, looking into his hazel eyes, they were sure the night was gonna end in sex. One place or another
"Do you really want your night to end alone, Jack?" Y/N knew either one of them wanted their night to end alone
"Y/N, what are you doing?" They ignored Peggy at the other end
"No" Jack looked down into the floor, giving Y/N the opportunity to take out their earpiece and dumb it in their glass and put it behind the counter "I don't want to end up alone tonight. What about you, Y/N?" Y/N stepped closer to Jack, making them stand in between his legs, faces inches apart
"Depends on who I'm ending up with" Jack's breath quickened as Y/N's lips were millimeters away from his "I have to go home" Y/N sighed when Jack pushed himself closer and Y/N pulled back
"Let me drive you," He said as he stood up
"You don't know where I live," They said, laughing a little
"You could tell me" Jack pulled Y/N's body closer to his by their waist
"Fine. I let you drive me" If this was a normal invitation to a gala, they probably wouldn’t had ended up with someone they just met
Y/N tried to open their door, but it was hard when Jack was standing behind them kissing their neck “I’ll kill you if you leave any hickeys”
“Understood” He said and turned Y/N around as they got the door opened
Jack pushed them inside the doors as he was kissing them with force. Y/N closed the door as their hands were occupied with both tucking Jacks hair and trying to get his tie loose
“Desperate much, Y/N” He said and grinned into the kiss
“You’re the one who’s desperate. Getting into bed with a person you’ve just met” They said as they pulled his tie above his head not wasting anytime to get it all loose
“And what about you? Hm? You also just met me” He said unbuttoning his button up
“I’ve been watching you for longer” They said pulling them both into their bedroom trying to get his belt off while kissing up and down his neck making sure to leave hickeys
“You know, it’s not fair that you have all you clothes on, but I’m almost naked” Jack said which was followed with a moan as he kicked off his shoes and theirs followed
“If it was your house, it might have been different” They said between kisses that went from the right side of his neck, across his throat, and to the left side of his neck “My house, my rules” They said she finally gave in and pulled down the zipper to their dress and slipped it down their body, leaving them in their matching bra and panties
Y/N pushed Jack back so he sat down on the bed. He reached out to their hips and pulled them onto his lap “Is it supposed to be comforting that you’ve been watching me for longer?” He asked as Y/N started kissing him again
“It wasn’t my intention, but, is it?” They asked as they looked deep into his eyes and started rocking their hips lightly which caused him to close his eyes and moan “Tell me. Was it?”
“No” He managed to get out as his breath started to tremble “Please” He moaned as he put his head on their shoulder
“Please what, baby?” They knew exactly what he wanted, but they needed to hear him say it
“Please fuck me” He breathed out as he started to scratch up and down Y/N’s back
“Of course, darling,” They said as they got off of Jack's lap “Take off your boxers” They demanded which he happily and quickly did “Good boy,” They said and got onto their knees right in front of him
They took his cock in their hand and licked a stripe from the base to the tip which made his breath tremble as his eyes rolled back in his head. Y/N spit in her palm before stroking him a few times before taking him in their mouth
“Fuck” Jack moaned and put his hand in Y/N’s hair to make them take him in more, but which resulted in them grabbing his hand and pulling it away “Please let me touch you” He moaned as she started going up and down
The bedroom was quickly filled with Jacks loud moans which they had no intention to cover “Fuck, Y/N. I’m gonna cum” It was Y/N’s cue to get off and stood up “What are you doing?”
“You’ll see. Get in the middle” They demanded which he happily did. He would do anything for the person in front of him. As he got in the middle of the bed, Y/N clipped off her bra and slid off her underwear and discovered them in the pile of clothes on the floor
“You’re gorgeous,” Jack said as Y/N straddled his lap, but not sitting down and as he put his hands on their waist
“And you look even more handsome naked” They smiled seductively
“Please. I need you to fuck me” He moaned as he closed his eyes “Please” He bucked up his hips, but Y/N pulled away
“Only if you’ll be a good boy, and not do this stunt again”
“I swear. Please. I swear I'll be good” His eyes started watering. He never thought he’d be this submissive to anyone. He was always the one in charge. He wasn’t used to this
“Good. Now, if you don’t keep your promise, you’ll get punished. You get that?” They asked as they hovered over him
“Yes. Yes, I understand. Please, fuck me. I want you”
“No. You don’t want me. You need me, and I don’t think you can accept that. You’re too embarrassed to be so submissive. You hate not being in charge. Is that correct?” They leaned down and hovers their mouth over his pulse point. He nodded “I need to hear you, baby”
“Yes. That is correct” He admitted
“Thank you,” They said as they started sucking at his pulse point, dragging short but loud moans out of him
“Please” He moaned. Y/N started stroking him a few times, still wet from their mouth. Y/N took in just the tip which made them moan a little “Fuck, Y/N” They slid more down onto his cock taking almost all of it in, making them both moan loud
Y/N put their forehead on Jack’s as they started rocking their hips. Soon the room was filled with both of their loud moans, defiantly heard by the neighbours
Y/N sat up straight as they started picking up their speed and sat Jack trusted his hips to meet their movements
“Fuck, Y/N! I’m gonna cum” He closed his eyes and rolled his head back. Y/N could as well feel the knot in her lower stomach tightening
“Show, don’t tell,” They said as they put their hands on his chest. With just a few more seconds, Jack came and Y/N followed short after
Y/N got off, laid beside Jack, and pulled the sheets over the two of them
“We should do that again sometime” Y/N smiled and kissed Jacks' cheek
“We should” He sighed and looked towards them

Jack Thompson x Reader
Previous Chapters
What Lies Before US
Chapter 19
A/N: once again thank you @clinicallydepressedreader for the lovely reblog of the last chapter! I do appreciate every like/feedback a great deal.
The next morning, before the sun had made its way above the horizon, the two of them packed up their things in the office before making their way back to the bunker. It was still locked, so Jack entered the code to gain access.
“Seems like no one broke out”, he commented sarcastically.
They were greeted by silence as they made their way back towards the interrogation chamber. The first person they came across was Sousa, who looked like he hadn’t slept much.
“You look a bit under the weather”, Y/N said with a small smile, “Everything alright?”
The brunet nodded. “Yeah. Peggy’s asleep. So is her brother.”
“Did you get anything?”, Jack asked, pointing towards the interrogation room with his chin.
“Yeah”, he huffed, “seems like you really are our best interrogator, Jack. What a pity you’ll switch agencies.” He paused: “Apparently, he was captured in 1940 and brought to a facility in East Prussia, where he underwent torture for several years. After the war, HYDRA found new allies in the Soviet Union interested in their research, so the base continued in Kaliningrad.”
“So the Soviets know about that entire mind control stuff?”, Thompson asked, crossing his arms with a scowl. This was bad. HYDRA was a rogue organisation without a state to back it, but the Soviet Union had an entire apparatus behind it.
“Yeah”, Daniel confirmed, “he mentioned that they continued to work on their technique, improve the compliance of their subjects.”
“That’s why he’s only the BETA candidate”, Y/N threw in, “There must be an ALPHA, too. Someone who’s been trained better. That’s what they outlined in that booklet, too. Does he have details on that person?”
Daniel shook his head: “They made sure for candidates not to meet.”
“And do we know if he’s stable without a handler? Or is he just going to revert back into mad-mode?”, Jack questioned.
“I give no guarantees”, Daniel scoffed, “but I think without Keller’s orders, it should be fine. We’ll still send him to see a psychiatrist to look into possible de-programming, in case we were to ever run into another HYDRA scientist again.” His head turned to Y/N. “Thank you, Y/N. I know you could’ve shot him to get our mission done with less personal risk.”
She waved her hand: “Daniel. I’ve pulled the trigger too quick too often. I suppose I can try the other way once in a while.” Feeling Jack’s gaze upon her, she knew that he knew what she felt, even if he disagreed with her feeling that sense of guilt.
“We’ll take him back to L.A. with us”, Daniel said, nudging his head in the direction of where Michael was still locked up, “probably we’ll leave in about ten hours. Peggy organised private means of transportation.”
“You mean she called Stark.”
“I mean she called Stark”, Sousa confirmed Jack’s guess. “Are you coming with us?”
The two exchanged a quick glance.
“I think we have to get our affairs sorted in New York. I have to talk to McKinley to make him interim Chief”, Jack pulled a face, “and yes, I vetted him as thoroughly as I could, and though he doesn’t have my charm, he’s sure as hell not gonna turn out a Communist or HYDRA agent.”
Daniel and Y/N scoffed simultaneously.
“I described you in a great many ways, Thompson, but charming?”, Daniel grinned.
“If you need backup”, Y/N said, not having to say more than that to clarify her offer. Sousa nodded.
“We will.”
“I’ll organise our fights back to New York”, Y/N said to Jack before marching off to one of the offices to call the airline.
When she had left, Jack turned to Sousa.
“I need Carter to spend a weekend with Y/N, get her out of New York.”
“What?”, Sousa raised an eyebrow, “Are you double-crossing someone again?” It was a clearly a joke, but Jack still rolled his eyes.
“No, you jackass”, he huffed, “but there’s something I need to do, and I can’t have her knowing just yet. Come on, it’s awful keeping a secret from a spy, so I need a spy to help me!”
Daniel had his suspicions where this was headed, so he nodded without further question.
A few hours later, Y/N and Jack got ready to leave Miami behind.
“Tell Peggy I wish her all the best”, Y/N said to Sousa when they got ready to enter the taxi, “I think she’s quite busy with everything that’s happened.”
“I will”, Sousa said with a smile, “Thank you for the help.”
“Don’t mention it”, she said, “You two have saved our asses more than enough, too.”
Just when they were about to climb into the cab, the door flew open again and Peggy stormed out to hug Y/N. “You didn’t think I would not say goodbye to you, did you?”
“I’m sure you’ve got bigger things on your mind then waving at me”, Y/N laughed, “especially since I’m sure we’ll speak on the phone before you know it.”
“You can count on it!”, Peggy looked over to Jack, nodding at him. “Thank you, Jack. I even relinquish the desire to shoot you.”
Jack snorted. “Yeah? Thanks, Marge.”
“See you around, you two”, Peggy said with a smile as they departed. For once, despite the entire Michael-situation wasn’t yet resolved completely, their case was closed. Keller was dead. The Arena Club dismantled.
Jack Thompson’s and Y/N L/N’s tenue at the SSR was coming to a close.
……………
They decided to remain at the SSR for four more weeks to wrap things up, then take a few days off with the vacation days that they had, in theory, accumulated but had been unable to ever use because the world wouldn’t stop ending before starting at the CIA in March of 1948. That meant that they had a few weeks of mostly filing and other desk duties, which came to Y/N’s advantage as it gave her wound time to heal without feeling like she was missing out on anything that would’ve needed her skillset. A definite downside to that was, however, that it provided time to think. And as good as they were when dealing with criminals, from mobster to mad scientist, they were equally terrible at handling domestic issues.
And there was a rather big one that they had to take care of one way or another. Their own wedding.
‘Why the hell are you worrying about this, Thompson? You’ve seen how it goes at Carter and Sousa’s. Just don’t fall flat on your face and you’ll be fine’, Jack thought to himself, though he knew he was only kidding himself. There were a million things that could go wrong. Family was a blessing, but it was also a can of worms. And his friends from university and from his time in the Marine Corps didn’t know each other, so they might hate each other. And there was the miniscule thing around Y/N’s family. Or, more precisely, her father.
Their wedding would take place in February, which meant that it would most likely be cold as hell, but there wasn’t much they could do about it, it was one of the only moments – perhaps of their entire lives – where they could be fairly sure that they had time for such an event.
Y/N was a bit confused by the no-discussion-allowed tone Peggy had when she called her one day to inform her that they’d spend a weekend together back in Boston where Peggy knew a childhood friend who was selling wedding dresses. Y/N wasn’t that thrilled to return to that city again so soon – but after being threatened to have to fly to L.A. to meet with her instead, she agreed.
“You sure you don’t want to come?”, Y/N asked when packing her suitcase, looking over to her fiancé. “We don’t really do things traditionally, so I don’t mind if you see the dress before day X.”
“You’re right”, he pushed himself off the wall with a grin, “we did everything up until this moment in an unorthodox manner. Let’s do this one thing the old-fashion way. I’m sure my ma would be livid if we didn’t.” He gave her a quick kiss, causing Y/N to laugh.
“Your ma would be livid if she knew half the crap we’ve done together”, Y/N informed him, “And I don’t even mean just our work now, I doubt she’d be happy with all the stuff that happened before the war, either.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, we were practically saints at university”, he said with a wink, making her scoff.
“Yeah. I hope Nick bites his tongue if he’s around on our wedding day. Don’t want your parents’ image of their saintly son to be destroyed.”
………
Y/N was greeted by her friend at the airport. “You really didn’t have to fly all across the country just for this silly thing”, Y/N said after giving her a hug, “I’m sure Jack wouldn’t have walked off the altar just because I was wearing a normal dress. With that temper of his, he can’t afford to be picky.”
Peggy laughed at her jab at her fiancé. “You know, Y/N, I have to agree with you on this one! Doesn’t mean you should not do it, still. Maybe I just want to see that airhead speechless once.”
Y/N grinned. “He does have a tendency to want the last word. That, and he doesn’t have the best of filters. Should’ve seen him when we met again after the war. I wasn’t sure if he was about to jump at me to hug me, or slap me, and he just ended up accidentally insulting me.”
“What?”, Peggy looked offended on Y/N’s behalf when she heard that, and Y/N only waved.
“I’m pretty sure he had a rough night before”, she said with a lopsided smile, “and he’s never been good at personal diplomacy. Trust me, you eventually learn to handle and to interpret his insults. Most of them aren’t meant to be taken literally, or even figuratively, they’re just an expression of Thompson-doesn’t-know-what-to-say.”
As they made their way through the city, Y/N sighed. “Didn’t expect to be back here so soon, I have to say. But I guess I can’t hate every city for what happened in it, otherwise, sooner or later, I won’t be able to live in the US entirely.”
“So you’ve gotten over your hatred for L.A.?”, Peggy asked with raised eyebrows.
“No.”
“No?” The brunette laughed.
“No, but for a whole host of reasons. First”, Y/N raised a finger, “I don’t like the climate. Way to hot. I prefer more moderate weather, and New York’s summers are hot enough. Second, I am deeply weirded out by Hollywood. Feels like throwing a glittering blanket over a pile of dirty laundry.” Peggy laughed at her description of most people’s idolised part of America, but Y/N continued. “Third, I have to be a bit considerate towards Jack. And I doubt he can live in the same city as Howard Stark without accidentally murdering him.”
“Yes, some days, I share that sentiment”, Peggy agreed, “By all his brilliance, he is a nuisance, too.”
Y/N pressed her lips together, wondering if asking about Michael was appropriate. She decided, after having taken a bullet in order to save the man, she had the right to inquire. “How is your brother?”
“I think he is getting better. It is really hard, though, for him to – you know – figure out who he is, again. Who he really is, without mind control, without the programme that they had drilled into him”, Peggy replied, her tone calm and relatively collected. “But I know he’ll get through this. Michael taught me what it means to fight to get what no one thought possible. He survived all they’ve done to him – he’ll get back.”
“We’ll have to look into that programming, though”, Y/N muttered, clenching her jaw, “it doesn’t sound from the notebook that they’re thinking about scaling back their experiments. Chances are, we’ve got several other American or British POWs that underwent similar procedures and are being reintroduced into the country to do their bidding.”
“Yes”, Peggy agreed, frowning at the thought. Then, she shook her head. “But not today. Today, you’re going to find the perfect dress!”
…………
The quaint house stood in the middle of a large plot of land, and if Jack had to ever point to the definition of a house with a white picket fence, it would have been this house. It had everything one would draw on such a picture – trees in the garden, well-maintained flowers. A swing.
A swing? He looked at the wooden contraption. Yes, a swing. But Y/N was an only child – at least, she had been when she left for Europe. Oh well. ‘Here goes nothing’. He fought the urge to abort the mission, to just go home and get married to the girl he wanted to marry without pulling this stunt – he knew she wouldn’t have been mad at him for not doing it. But, once again, his stubborn self could not accept that her father was mad at her decision to leave for Europe. Even if it had taken Jack himself a minute to get around on that decision.
He sighed, and went to ring the doorbell.
First, no one answered the door. Looking through the window next to it, he saw that there was light burning in one of the rooms, so he assumed someone was in there. Then, through the window, he saw a kid walking towards him – maybe fifteen. Dark hair and dark eyes, he looked confused when he opened the door.
“Yes? Can I help you?”, the boy asked.
“I’m looking for Mr. L/N”, Jack replied, “is he here?”
“He’s upstairs”, the boy replied, “who’s asking? I can get him.”
“Jack Thompson”, Jack pulled out his SSR ID, “He might remember me from when he lived in New York. I went to school with his daughter.”
“Dad?”, the boy turned around and yelled upstairs, “someone here to see you! A federal agent!”
Jack heard the footsteps of Y/N’s father descending the stairs. When he saw Jack in the doorframe, his face froze.
“You’re the boy Y/N went to school and university with”, he stated.
“Yes”, Jack nodded, shaking the man’s hand, “Jack Thompson. I’ve worked with your daughter at the SSR after the war, too.”
An aura of darkness, perhaps of sorrow or nostalgia coated the man’s face. “Seems like she couldn’t let it go.”
Jack’s eyebrows twitched upwards. “Sir, her work saved countless lives. During her time in Germany, as well as during her time at the SSR. Most men would be happy settling for half of her record.”
Mr. L/N pressed his lips together. “And you came here to bring me the notice of her passing? Is that it? Your sworn duty as her commanding officer?”
“What?”, Jack frowned, “No. Y/N’s alive and well, sir. I came here to ask you to give your daughter the right to choose. She didn’t have to serve. And yet, she did. And when she came back, she didn’t have to work for an intelligence agency. And yet, she did. Hell, I didn’t task her with half the crap she ended up pursuing at the SSR, and in hindsight, I should thank the Lord that she did. If it hadn’t been for her, I’d be dead.”
Mr. L/N looked over his shoulder, at the boy still standing there. “Give us a moment, Rich.” Then, he stepped outside, alone, to face Jack.
“Mr. Thompson, when Y/N decided to head to England, her mother already knew that she was sick. She just didn’t tell Y/N right away. We didn’t want her to go, because we already knew we’d lose someone within the next years. Before she could tell Y/N, she was on her way to England.” He sounded bitter, angry, because that meant that his only child had left him alone.
“Sir, I get that this must’ve hurt, I do”, Jack clenched his jaw, “but we were all asked to make a sacrifice. We were asked to take up arms and run head first into enemy lines if need be. So yes, your family was ruined by war, even though Y/N came back, and for that, I am sorry. But how many families lost multiple children to the war, how many families were torn apart? She tried to do what was right, and she did a fine job.” He paused. “So I ask, is that resentment really worth ruining the chance of salvaging the relationship you could still have to your daughter? Because she left you in order to serve her country?” For once, he managed not to raise his voice to a hostile level, but he nonetheless stared down Mr. L/N.
“Mr. Thompson”, he said slowly, carefully, “Why did you come here?”
Jack huffed. “I came here to tell you that on February 19th, Y/N L/N will become Misses Y/N Thompson. She was convinced that you would not want to be at her wedding. I came here to ask you myself. And you can say no, but I wanted to give you the chance to not lose your daughter. Yes, she went to war, and yes, she came back different. But she came back. And if you let her, you can have her back, too.”
……………
February 19th was the date Jack had suggested. Y/N knew why that date meant something to him. It was the day he went to hell – February 19th, 1945, had been the day he landed on Iwo Jima. That day would always remain a black mark in his calendar, but this way, he took it back. It would no longer be the worst day of his life, it would be the best day of his life, too. Simply put, it would become the most meaningful day, good and bad, in his life.
Y/N had eventually found a dress – its long sleeves made up by a delicate lace, a deep v-neckline that, nonetheless, was modest, albeit a bit a different cut from the standard dresses. The A-line skirt allowed for easy movement, but did not consist of so much fabric that it would turn into a tripping hazard. Looking in the mirror, she saw Peggy smile at her from behind. Y/N herself didn’t manage to smile. She felt like she was staring at someone else entirely.
“You look stunning, Y/N. Absolutely gorgeous!”, Peggy stated and added with a smile, “What exactly Jack Thompson did to deserve you, I shall never know.”
Y/N couldn’t help but to grin at that remark. She knew that Peggy and Jack had started off – and continued for a long while – on the wrong foot.
“He really was a prick after the war, huh”, Y/N huffed, pulling the fabric around her neckline into place.
“The worst part is – at least he had somewhat of an explanation for it”, Peggy lamented, “But how many others are just as bad as he was and aren’t as marked by the years we spent abroad?”
“Peg, I am sorry to inform you, but if you want to live in a world without being degraded by our wonderful male co-workers”, Y/N said, turning to face the brunette with a cynical smile, “Then you were born at least two hundred years too early.”
“Well, someone has to pave the way, and I suppose, for the time being, that’ll have to be the two of us – and in all fairness, we have come a long way within the SSR”, Peggy replied, and Y/N nodded with one eyebrow raised.
“I suppose we have. Though you’ve had it significantly worse than I did. I was never accused of treason, or kicked out, or blackmailed with another person’s file”, Y/N said dryly.
“Indeed, the accusation of treason mostly came from my now-husband, I was kicked out by Chief Dooley, and blackmailed by Chief Thompson”, she recounted, laughing, “I suppose now I’ve gotten a beating from all the Chiefs, so maybe I am good now.”
“You better be, considering you’ll be heading a new organisation soon”, Y/N winked, “unless you go against yourself – you’ve got only Howard Stark to fear, and I think he has better things to do than to go after you. A suggestion from me – he should invest in a better vault. And security system.”
……………
“Mr. Thompson!”, Jack looked over his shoulder as he was walking back to his car when he saw the kid from before running towards him.
“Can I help you, kid?”, he asked, turning around with an eyebrow raised.
“Dad never mentioned that Y/N was still alive”, the boy said, “He also never said that she was dead, now that I think about it. I guess, I just explained it away, given that she was never here.” He held out his hand: “I’m Rich. I’m Y/N’s stepbrother.”
Stepbrother. That made sense. A son from a previous marriage, whose father either had died, or was so absent that he had started to call Mr. L/N dad.
“Pleasure to meet you, Rich.”
“What is she like?”
Jack knew that he meant it as a completely innocent question, but to him, it was loaded with the memories of about fifteen years that he had, in one way or another, spent with Y/N. He didn’t even know where to begin with. How should he explain to this kid what a person Y/N was?
“Y/N”, he eventually said, elongating her name in the search for words, “She’s, uhm, probably the bravest, kindest, and strongest person I’ve ever met. Words don’t do her justice.”
“Dad hardly ever mentioned her – you said that she served… where did she serve? Dad didn’t seem thrilled about it.”
Jack knew that it wasn’t his story to tell – the spying, the entire tale of Y/N’s time in Germany, but he also wanted to convey to this boy that his ‘dad’ was dead-wrong for having been upset at his daughter, so he decided to rub it right in his face. “She fought against the Nazis. She spent the war in Europe. That’s why she left.”
It had the effect he had wanted – Rich’s mouth fell open as he stared at Jack in disbelief. “What? That’s awesome!”
“Yeah, well”, Jack gave him a lopsided grin and nodded towards the house behind them, “tell that to your dad, will ya, kid?”
“I will, sir!” Jack almost pulled a face at the kid calling him ‘sir’. Only the pencil pushers in the SSR called him that, and even they only rarely did. Most of them just called him ‘Chief’. The last time he was called ‘sir’ right, left and centre was back in the military.
“See you around, Rich.”
…………
When Y/N returned, she wasn’t surprised when Jack was not at either her or his place – though their time at the SSR was coming to an end, he still didn’t like to let go off the wheel entirely just yet. So she headed to the office, where her search was indeed successful.
Entering the office, she felt the eyes of the men inside it on her.
Raising an eyebrow and putting her hands on her hips, she paused. “Is something the matter, gentlemen?”
“We knew about you leaving the SSR together with the Chief, but he only now mentioned that you’ll soon be married”, Goldberg eventually said, causing Y/N to raise her other eyebrow as she laughed.
“Yes, I’m sorry for myself, too.”
“Hey!” She grinned at Jack whose head popped out of the bullpen as he shook his head: “Unbelievable.”
“Congratulations, Y/N. Can’t say I saw that coming when you had your first day here, I thought you’d be more likely his murderer than his wife, but I stand corrected.”
Y/N laughed at Goldberg’s not entirely wrong analysis of hers and Jack’s first meeting post-war.
“What can I say”, she said, “we’ve never done things traditionally. That applies professionally as well as privately, it would seem.”
“I swear, if you now start telling them about our yesteryears, I’ll fire you on the spot”, Jack warned jokingly, “I want to upkeep my reputation for my next job.”
Y/N huffed: “I have no idea what you’re getting at, Jack. Your drinking escapades aside, and your unbelievable ability to make enemies, you were a straight-A student all your life.” And both of these aspects of his personality weren’t all that well-hidden, though, perhaps, his subordinates merely got to see the surface of both.
In fact, that was perhaps one of Jack Thompson’s most proficient traits. He had the capability to adapt to his environment, mould himself into whatever people expected from a person in his situation, put his own personality on the backburner in order to climb the ladder. He had always wanted to be the best – the best at maths, the best at sports, the best at anything he ever did, and he’d do anything to succeed. That didn’t necessarily mean to push others out the way, it certainly meant he fought hard to be better than the next guy, but as harsh as he was to others, he was at least ten times harsher with himself. He was able to build up a wall to reinforce himself to be ready to take on a world that had been incredibly hostile in their lifetime. They had experienced an economic crash and an economic recovery, they had experienced the worst war the world had ever seen. Not only that, but they had fought in it. And then they had come back to a country where they felt like strangers, only to realise that they had to second-guess every person around them. His wall of anger and of sarcasm and rudeness, it was also a wall of hard work, of doubt and of a deep conviction to want to serve this country. It was the wall that only very few got to ever climb, and Y/N was perhaps the one person who knew every brick in the wall.
To understand Jack Thompson was to understand the environment he operated in. That’s how it’s always been – he had been a different person when they were surrounded by other students as he was when he was with his family. He was different when being the SSR Chief, or her fiancé. Essentially, he grew up in a society that valued first and foremost the outcome, rather than the means. And the outcome society valued most was success. That might come across as greedy or selfish, but Y/N knew – at heart, he still did it all with good intentions. He wouldn’t ever back out of a fight in fear over his own life. He was willing to die for his job. And he didn’t trust many others to do a better job than he did himself. Again, this might sound selfish and arrogant to many, but Y/N had seen ‘the others’. Men like Vernon Masters, Calvin Chadwick and so on. They were just as ambitious, but they were cowards. They were willing to sacrifice others for their own success. He was willing to sacrifice himself.
And that, Y/N thought to herself, is why I’m going to marry him – to keep that part of him controlled. Because as much as she admired him for his willingness to give his all for cause and country – she really didn’t want him to become a martyr. She didn’t need for him to become the next Captain America. She was fine with him just being a good man, a man with a long list of flaws and a record of mistakes.
She could not ever imagine being with someone as literally flawless as Steve Rogers – then, she would feel like an absolute imposter. She had just as long a list of flaws and mistakes.
That’s why it worked. They needed each other – and in a sense, they always had.

Fandom: Marvel
Summary: Y/N, an Avenger, friend of Tony Stark, and the one who helped Steve Rogers adjust to the 21st century after he came out of the ice, gets flung back into the 1940s when something goes wrong on a training mission. She has no idea how long her stay in the 40s might be, but one way or another, it's going to be interesting.

A/N: This doesn't follow any of the season 2 timeline lol, just some vague stuff put together for the sake of this story.

"We could always just find another ticket for her and make up a reason for her to be there on her own..."
"Yeah? Like what? At this event, anybody with the slightest hole in their story is gonna stick out like a sore thumb.”
I looked between Peggy Carter and Daniel Sousa as they talked, frantically trying to figure out what to do with me tonight. They were currently in the middle of breaking up a secret society in Los Angeles, and they had a mission disguised as a date tonight where they'd be infiltrating a fancy party being thrown by said society.
Unfortunately for them, I'd landed in their laps (pretty literally) this afternoon, and accidentally thrown a wrench into their whole operation.
One minute, I'd been doing a training mission with the Avengers. The next, I'd been falling on top of  a desk in the SSR in 1947. I still didn't know exactly what had thrown me back in time, but no matter what the cause, the fact didn't change that I was here, and would be for the foreseeable future.
I'd almost had a heart attack when I'd looked up to see THE Peggy Carter, founder of SHIELD and total badass, standing in front of me. I think I freaked her and Daniel out a little by fangirling the minute I got up off the floor, but a stranger landing in the middle of their super high-level organization probably would've landed me in the interrogation room anyway.
Thankfully, I knew Steve Rogers pretty well, and so did Peggy. I'd mentioned his name briefly when trying to explain how I knew who she was, but then I'd been able to use what I knew about Steve and the stories he'd shared with me to convince her I was telling the truth about time travel.
Since then, we'd done some brief introductions and I'd been let out of the interrogation room. I'd been given the bare minimum details of the mission to understand the conversation, and now I sat on the edge of a desk watching Daniel and Peggy talk as they tried to adjust their plans.
"Perhaps Mr. Jarvis would be available on short notice to take her as a date..." mused Peggy.
"Whoa, Jarvis? Oh my gosh, the real person Jarvis is alive and walking around right now. That makes sense," I said, mostly talking to myself.
"That still doesn't solve the problem of them not being on the guest list," continued Daniel, he and Peggy only briefly glancing my way at the outburst.
"Maybe Howard could help us secure another two."
"He already wore out his welcome with these guys to get you in there the first time."
"Did you just say Howard? As in Howard Stark?"
Peggy and Daniel groaned in unison.
"Don't tell me you're a big fan of him too?" groaned Daniel.
"His ego's already big enough as it is," Peggy agreed.
"No, it's not that, I- uh... nevermind." I pushed off the desk, waving off thoughts of Tony. I still wasn't clear on how this time travel stuff worked, and I didn't want to go telling people about Howard Stark's currently nonexistent son without more assurance it wouldn't have any crazy impact first. "Look, you guys clearly don't have space for me in this mission. The best path is a small team, specifically a couple, who can enjoy the night like a regular date while still gathering intel and handling the mission."
Peggy and Daniel shared a look, and I could see an entire conversation passing between them. I continued.
"I might not know much about the forties, but I'm still a capable adult. I'm an Av- I was on a team with Steve to take on missions around the world. I'll be fine handling myself for a bit while you guys take care of business."
"Are you sure?" asked Peggy with a frown.
"We don't want to completely abandon you. Disappearing from your own time and reappearing in another can't be easy," added Daniel.
I gave them a faint smile, momentarily overwhelmed with memories. I'd first met Steve when he'd shown up in the future and needed someone to help him adjust. I'd been a SHIELD agent at the time, responsible for liaising with Tony Stark, so they figured helping a living legend adjust would be nothing compared to that.
They'd been right, and we'd hit it off the bat. When Tony eventually formed the team, I'd been on the roster. And now, I was the one being faced with adjusting to another time.
"It's not easy," I said to Daniel, the smile still on my face. "But I also don't need babysitters when those babysitters have important, world-saving duties to attend to. I actually have a little bit of an advantage, going back in time. I took history classes and whatnot, so I at least have some idea of how this world works."
"Well, if you're sure-"
"Alright! Sousa, Marge, fear not! The cavalry is here."
I turned at the sound of a new voice, but not before I caught Peggy and Daniel rolling their eyes so far back into their heads I couldn't see the pupils. A tall, blond man in a suit was striding across the room towards us, and a second after I started sizing him up he noticed me and did the same.
"Who's this?" he asked, coming to a stop in front of us. Peggy and Daniel didn't answer right away, apparently working together to gather mental strength before entering the conversation with this guy. I just leaned back a bit against the desk and watched.
Peggy and Daniel took a second to make significant eye contact, then sighed as one. Daniel turned to Jack, and Peggy subtly shifted closer to me.
"She's somebody who does a job like ours, but from the future," said Daniel. Jack just stared at him for a minute, then looked to me, and then back at Daniel.
"Sousa, despite what you might think, I'm not stupid."
"Jack, I get that it's hard to believe, but if you actually listen for two seconds-"
Jack huffed and crossed his arms while Daniel kept talking. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Peggy leaning in towards me, and I blocked out the boys' argument as she whispered to me.
"Y/N, I have a favor to ask of you."
"Hit me," I whispered back. Peggy sighed.
"Jack has recently had a moral epiphany," she started. I took half a second to give her a curious glance, and she just rolled her eyes in response. "It's been mostly nice, both to have him on our side and to finally have him respecting me and Daniel and anyone that's not an older man already in power.
"That said, we don't have space for him on this mission. All he's going to do is be a nuisance, and he's far less likely to agree to being benched than you."
"And I take it you have a solution for this?"
"Yes. But it would require throwing you under the bus to keep him occupied tonight."
I paused for a second, giving Jack another good look. He and Sousa were still in the middle of a heated argument while Sousa tried to convince him I was actually a time traveler, and even though they both seemed exasperated, Jack also seemed to be enjoying the back and forth. A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
"Peggy Carter, it would be an absolute honor to assist you on a mission," I said, turning to her with a smile. "Even if it means spending the evening learning about the forties from a slightly questionable teacher."
"You're a lifesaver," she said, giving me a smile back. She pushed off the desk, moving towards Daniel and Jack to interrupt them but shooting me a wink first. "And don't worry, I'll give you an actual introduction to the decade after this mission is over."
I nodded, then Peggy got Jack and Daniel's attention to put their argument to rest and explain the situation. Jack raised an eyebrow when Peggy told him his job would be keeping me company, but she phrased it well enough that it didn't quite sound like babysitting for either of us. Finally, he agreed, and Peggy and Daniel headed out for their event, leaving me and Jack Thompson alone in the bullpen of the LA SSR.
He stood by the windows, staring out at the traffic below as I spun around in a swivel chair. I kept looking at him, but he didn't look over at me once, at least not that I could catch. Finally, after a few more rotations, I huffed a sigh and pushed myself up. I put my hands on my hips, but Jack still didn't look over.
"Alright, I'm bored out of my mind, which should not be a possibility less than three hours after I suddenly appeared in a different time period," I said. Jack finally looked over at me, raising an unimpressed eyebrow as he did. I continued. "You're supposed to be helping me adjust to this place, since I don't know how long I'm gonna be here. Believe it or not, it didn't take me that long to adjust to this office."
He sighed heavily, but stepped away from the window anyway, stopping a few feet in front of me with his arms across his chest. He stared at me for a few seconds without saying anything, and I just stared right back. I crossed my arms to mirror him and he snorted and rolled his eyes.
"You're really from the future?" he finally asked.
"Did the twenty minutes Peggy and Daniel spent convincing you not settle this matter?"
He grunted, then finally dropped his arms back to his sides.
"Fine. What do you want to do then?"
I grinned. "Any good places to grab a drink and a dance around here?”
****************
"This is only my first week in LA, so if this place ends up being terrible, it's the city's fault and not mine," said Jack as we stepped out of the cab together. I'd taken a second to find a dress to steal from Peggy's emergency disguise stash at the SSR, since my 21st century mission clothes would probably cause a riot if I went out in them, and then Jack and I had jumped in a cab to a spot in town he'd heard about.
"Boooo," I teased as he paid the driver and we headed in together. "You can't consider the possibility of the night being a failure before it's even started! It's a jinx."
"A jinx?"
"Yeah, you know. Like bad luck."
"I know the definition of the word jinx," he scoffed. "I just think it's ridiculous you believe in them."
"Oh, yeah, of course. Actually, I didn't want to tell Peggy and Daniel this, but in the future we've discovered that a lot of things people dismissed as superstitions or bad luck are actually true. Like jinxes. Oh, and breaking a mirror? That actually will mess you up! We didn't realize it until science advanced a little further, I think in the seventies, but it's true."
Jack stared at me for a few seconds, and I stared back with a perfectly neutral expression on my face. Then, he broke into a grin and nudged me with his shoulder.
"You're messing with me."
"I definitely am."
He scoffed and shook his head, but the smile didn't drop off his face. He sighed dramatically, looking up at the club in front of us, then held out his arm for me to take.
"C'mon. You're the one who wanted to experience the time period."
I smiled up at him, then looped my arm through his. He pulled me a little closer, and I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't speed up a bit as we walked into the club together.
Immediately I got hit with the music I associated with the swinging jazz of the 1940s as we stepped into a world of men in suits and women in old-style dresses, all twirling across the dancefloor together.
"Whoa," I breathed. Suddenly, it started to sink in that I was actually in the 1940s, more than 80 years from everything and everyone I knew. A new surge of sympathy for Steve welled up in my chest.
"You alright?" asked Jack, nudging me a little as we stood in the doorway. I took a deep breath in and out, then slowly nodded. "Okay, good. Let's go get a drink.”
I huffed a laugh as he pulled me through the crowd and towards the bar. We managed to find two stools, and Jack pulled my seat out for me before I sat down. I couldn't help giving him a slightly bemused look, which he grunted about as he took the seat next to me.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing," I said, waving him off. "Just, you know... forties."
He turned to stare at me, his eyebrows knit together, but the bartender appeared before he could question what I was talking about.
"What can I get the two of you?" asked the bartender. Jack turned to me, letting me go first.
"I'll have an old fashioned, please."
Both he and Jack looked at me for a second, but I looked right back at both of them like they were crazy for questioning it (because they were). After a second, Jack shrugged and turned back to the bartender.
"I'll do the same."
The bartender nodded, then moved away to make the drinks. I turned and gave Jack a smile.
"Thanks for buying," I said. "I didn't have my wallet on me when I got sucked back in time, and even if I did, I don't think the bartender would be able to accept the kind of bills I carry. I'm not trying to get arrested for counterfeiting a few hours into being in the past."
Jack chuckled. "Sure thing. So, an old fashion, huh?"
"Yeah. It's Ton- uh, it's my friend's favorite drink. He got me drinking them, too."
"Hm. Future sounds like a wild place."
"Honestly, I'd say 1940 is a little wilder."
The bartender set down our drinks, and Jack put a few bills on the table. Then, once he was out of earshot again, I turned to Jack with a smile.
"Cheers," I said, raising my glass in toast. "To new experiences and getting to know each other and this weird ass trip back to the past."
Jack smiled, although I could tell he was fighting it, and clinked his glass with mine before we both took a sip.
"So, Jack Thompson... tell me about the forties."
Jack and I spent the next hour talking about everything from foods that hadn't been invented yet (ranch dressing!) to the weird, national popularity of baseball and how I couldn't wait to see people start getting the memo about the NBA. Some of it was informative, even helpful, but for the most part we just... talked. Laughed. Joked around and enjoyed each other's company like people who'd known each other much longer than a few hours.
For some reason, it just felt easy. Going into this, heading out with someone who was clearly a confident, if not arrogant, man from the 1940s, with Peggy's warnings on top of everything else? Well, let's just say I didn't have the highest of hopes. But by some miracle, whether it was our equally loud and teasing personalities or that fact that I proudly didn't know anything about baseball beyond the fact that games took way too long, rather than the ignorance or indifference he had been expecting... Jack Thompson and I got on like wildfire.
"I'm just saying, when you're watching a legend play, that's the only part of the game that matters!" Jack continued, defending his baseball stance. "And DiMaggio's a legend."
"Yeah, no shit," I scoffed, rolling my eyes to go with it. Jack snorted at my language, but I caught him grinning at me all the same as he took a sip from his drink. "But, unlike in other sports, your legend's only playing for like fifteen minutes out of every hour. Still boring!"
Jack opened his mouth, clearly ready with some other comeback that would do absolutely nothing to change my position, but before he could, the band started up with something I actually recognized.
"Oh my God!" I cried, setting down the now-empty glass that previously held my second old fashioned. "This song- we have to go dance!"
"You know this song?" asked Jack, only looking slightly bemused as he set down his glass and I dragged him towards the dance floor.
"Yeah. Steve plays it all. The damned. Time," I said, finally coming to a stop in the middle of the floor. I moved to drop Jack's hand now that I'd gotten him out here, but he just squeezed it tighter and pulled me closer. "It's one of the only songs from the forties he plays that I can actually stand."
Jack scoffed, wrapping an arm around my waist as we started twirling across the floor together. "You're actually friends with him? Sousa wasn't making that whole thing up?"
"What? No. Actually, I'm the one that helped him adjust to the future not long after he woke up in my time."
Jack nodded, looking thoughtful. "So that's why you recognized Carter? Sousa said you almost fainted from excitement when you first saw her."
"No. I mean, sort of, I guess. But I would've known her even without Steve. She's only the coolest, most badass woman and intelligence pioneer the world has ever known," I said. Jack snorted, and I scowled. "What? You disagree?"
He shrugged. "I mean, I'd probably argue there are some other intelligence pioneers that deserve mention. But... I guess no, I don't necessarily disagree. Just don't mention it to her, alright? I'll deny it, and I don't need her immortalization from a time traveler being thrown in my face every time I work a case with her for the rest of time."
I laughed, and Jack gave me a knowing smile before spinning me out and away from him. He twirled me across the floor before pulling me back to him quickly. We moved in perfect harmony, picking up our pace to match the band and putting the other couples to shame. We quickly got lost in our own little world, to the point that everyone and everything except the music disappeared. When Jack sped up, I sped up a little more, and we easily met each other's challenges, stupid smiles on our faces the whole time.
When a slower song started playing, Jack and I finally relaxed the pace, forgoing the elaborate dance moves to just sway in place and catch our breaths for a minute. I was still a little lost in our moment, enough so that I didn't notice someone else approaching us until he shoved himself part way between me and Jack.
"Hey doll. Mind if I cut in?" The guy leered over me, totally ignoring Jack as he reached for my hand without waiting for my answer. I scoffed, my tired-but-happy smile instantly turning into a scowl. Jack seemed equally frustrated and moved as if he was about to step in and do something about it, but I decided to just take care of it for the both of us.
"Actually, yeah, I do mind," I snapped, fixing the guy with an unimpressed look as I snatched my hand out of his reach. He seemed incredibly surprised by my response, but I plowed ahead anyway. "I'm dancing with someone already, and even if I weren't, I have no interest at all in dancing with you. So... scram. Or beat it. Or whatever people say now."
The man just stood there for a second, open-mouthed, blinking at me in stunned silence. Then, his expression shifted into a scowl and his face started to turn red.
"I- You- How dare you-!"
"Dude, get lost," I said, crossing my arms and staring him down as I talked over him. I glanced over his shoulder to Jack, who also looked shocked but in a pleasantly surprised way, and addressed him. "What's another good way to tell someone to go away?"
He shrugged, a delighted smile growing on his face. "Take a powder?"
"Really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. Jack just nodded, so I looked back at the rude guy. "Alright, take a powder. Hit the bricks. Take a long walk off a short pier. Other creative ways to say leave. I want to dance to this lovely song with my dance partner here, who is not you, so... yeah. Take the blatant instructions."
The man whirled around to Jack, like he expected him to say or do something to reign me in. Jack just shrugged again.
"You heard the lady. I'm not gonna tell you anything she didn't already say."
The man scowled, whipping back to look at me again. I just met him with crossed arms and a look that told him I wouldn't be budging an inch. He spluttered a few more incoherent words in indignation, then stormed off the dance floor and out of sight. I sighed, then faced Jack again.
"How wildly out of place was that for the time period? Both him and me?" I asked. Jack grinned.
"Him? Not very. You? Insanely," he said, taking my hand again as we went back to gently swaying in place. He tugged me a little closer to his chest, and I smiled. "I gotta say though, I sure enjoyed watching it."
"Good. Because I don't actually care at all, and I had a lot of fun doing that."
Jack laughed, throwing his head back before fixing me with a brilliant smile. He twirled me out and away from him again, then pulled me right back into his chest. We swayed together, closer than we'd been all night, and to my surprise I started noticing more than a few butterflies squirming in my chest as I stared up at the SSR Chief. Hm, noted the more logical side of my brain as we moved across the crowded dance floor. Nice, my heart replied as Jack's strong hand laid firmly on my waist and my hand traveled to the collar of his shirt.
Jack and I spent the rest of the night at the club, enjoying the music, the dancing, and each other's company until the place turned on the lights and threw us out. A few times, other men came up to hit on me and "steal me away" from Jack. Each time, I dressed them down and sent them on their way, and each time Jack just grinned and watched me do it. I could still tell he was ready to jump in, that his instinct was to take care of it for me, but he seemed to enjoy watching the jerks splutter and babble in shock and surprise as much as I did.
Afterwards, when we wandered back out onto the LA street together, Jack insisted on escorting me back to Howard Stark's place, where I'd be staying with Peggy. It was going to be incredibly weird staying at Tony's dad's house, meeting him and the real-human Jarvis, but I could process that later. Right now, I wanted to focus on the amazing, less-weird parts of being in the 40s. Specifically Jack Thompson, who I'd just spent a wonderful night enjoying this new time period with.
Jack hailed us a cab, and I rested my head on his shoulder and watched the city go by as the taxi took us out of the city, to the massive Stark mansion. It was basically a 40s version of Tony's Malibu house, and a pang of sadness tightened in my chest when I realized I had no idea when–or if–I would see my friends again.
I took a deep breath and shook those thoughts out of my head as the car came to a stop. All of that was a problem for later, not now. Jack got out first, holding the door for me and offering a hand to help me out, which I took. Rather than dropping it once I stood, he wrapped it around his arm as he asked the cabbie to wait and escorted me towards the house. We stopped on the porch and turned to face each other, and I realized I actually really didn't want the night to end.
"Thanks for showing me around the forties," I said, giving Jack a small smile. "It was actually really fun."
"You don't have to sound so surprised," he griped, but a smile made its way onto his face all the same. "So... I don't know how long you're gonna be here, and obviously we've got a lot of other work to do with Carter and Sousa tomorrow, but... maybe I could take you out again sometime. There's still a lot of forties you haven't seen yet."
"I'd like that," I said, a warm feeling welling up in my chest. I hesitated a second as Jack and I stared at each other on the doorstep, then decided to say fuck it and keep doing what I'd been doing all night: following my impulses. "Quick question: in the forties, if I kiss you on the first date, is that going to scare you off or something?"
Jack grinned. "It might get a raised eyebrow from the cabbie, but I sure as shit won't be complaining."
"Good."
With that, I grabbed Jack's lapels and tugged him towards me, leaning up just a bit and giving him a kiss. It was short, really just a quick peck since we'd just met, but fireworks exploded in my chest at the sensation anyway.
Jack's grin stayed in place as we pulled apart, and his hand lingered on my waist an extra second before dropping to his side. He took a step backwards, towards the waiting car, even as his eyes stayed on mine. I rested my hand on the doorknob, watching Jack and trying to stay in the moment even as he walked away.
"Welcome to the forties, sweetheart," he called as he made it down the porch steps and into the driveway. "I'll see you at work tomorrow."
I waved, a smile on my own face to match his. "Can't wait."
Jack gave a short wave and one last grin before getting into the cab. I watched as he drove away, a smile still on my own face even after I knew he couldn't see it. Finally, after the lights of the cab faded back into the LA night, I turned on my heel and walked into the house.
I'd been in the 40s for less than twelve hours, and I knew for a fact that I hadn't even scratched the tip of the iceberg on exploring the time period, or what frustrations being eighty years removed from everything I knew would bring. But, despite all that, I'd had a blast tonight, and tomorrow I'd get to start working with THE Peggy Carter. Whether I was only here for another few hours or it turned into months or longer, I couldn't help being excited at the idea of everything that was yet to come for me, not least of all my next date with Jack Thompson.

Talk about awkward first impressions...
THUMP”
Y/N flinched at the sound coming from her back door again. Slowly she inched her way towards the kitchen and stopped short of rounding the corner that would put her in the eye line of whoever was making those noises. Pausing she looked down at her dog.
“Shh!” Putting her finger to her lips she shook her head at the dog smiling up at her, wagging his tale to beat the band.
“THUMP”
This time she heard the door knob begin to jiggle. Covering her mouth, Y/N stifled a yelp and accidentally bit her tongue. She winced at the familiar coppery tasted that filled her mouth. Not again. She groaned to herself silently, leaning her head against the wall.
“BANG, BANG”
Y/N felt her soul leave her body when the stranger began pounding on the door. The wood began splintering as the lock was being broken. The pounding stopped. Taking a fortifying breath, she peaked her head around the corner again, and saw two shadowy figures. Then the shadowy figures began scuffling. Quietly she crept into the kitchen and reached for her cast iron skillet. With a strength she didn’t know she possessed she inched her way towards the door, trying to prepare herself for what was inevitable.
“We die like men, right, Rugby?” She looked down at her dog and whispered. He just wagged his tail and drooled. The scuffling stopped, and she heard the telltale sound of a body dropping. Then, she heard soft foot steps on her back stoop.
“Hello?” She watched in horror as her door swung open. In the dark she could make out the silhouette of a rather tall man slowly entering her kitchen. Without thinking twice, she crept up behind the man and taking aim, she swung the pan just as the man turned to face her. With a sickening ‘thwap’ he went down hard.
“Oh, my goodness!” Dropping the pot, she ran to turn on the light. Blinking to adjust to the light, Y/N turned back to look at the man lying face down on her kitchen floor. Blood. “Rugby, I think I just killed a man.”
“Not dead.” The man groaned and rolled onto his back. Her dog, Rugby, waddled over the intruder and began licking his face. “Unfortunately.” The man moaned and covered his face.
“Rugby no!” Y/N rushed forward to pull her dog back. “We don’t lick the enemy.”
“Enemy?” The man still cradling his head, tried to sit up. Quickly Y/N grabbed the pan and pressed the end into the man’s chest.
“Now, you, you just stay right there!” He looked from the pan to her face and cocked a brow. Something was off. Y/N’s grip on the pan handle waivered slightly as she thought. Squinting her eyes, she really paused to look at him. He looked so familiar. She could’ve sworn she’d seen him somewhere. “JackThompson.” She breathed, dropping the pan. He moaned again at the sound and laid back down. Rushing to his side, she knelt and reached out a hand towards him. Jack jerked back and eyed her narrowly. “You need to go to the hospital, Mr. Thompson.” He acquiesced to her help, and together they managed to get him on his feet.
“Your door.” Jack motioned weakly in the direction of said broken door. Y/N waived a hand and led him to the kitchen table.
“I’ll call my roommate and have the neighbors watch out for Rugby until she gets back. Knowing her, the cops will have been called and the door fixed before you could say ‘Jack Robinson’.” Nodding with an affirmative grunt at her own statement, Y/N rushed off to tell her neighbors. Around the pain, Jack smirked at the familiar phrase. Leaning his elbow against the table he grimaced and fought through a wave of nausea. “Ready to go?” Y/N reappeared in the doorway sans Rugby and took in his steadily paling features. “Yup, lets go.” Getting him on his feet, she wrapped an arm around his waist, and he wrapped one around her shoulders. “Don’t be afraid to put your weight on me, I can take it.” She glanced up at him with a determined expression. Jack smirked again. Together they hobbled outside and managed to make it down the low stoop. Leading him to the car, she made sure he was settled, and when he made a half hearted attempt to buckle himself in, she shook her head and did it for him.
They were silent on the drive to the hospital. They were silent when the nurses helped him into a wheel chair and deposited him in the waiting room. They were silent as he filled out some preliminary paper work. They were silent after the nurse had set him up in one of the hospital beds and taken his vitals. And all the while he’d just stared at her. It wasn’t until the nurse slid the privacy curtain closed, that the silence finally broke Y/N.
“Mr. Thompson, I am so sorry.” She rushed to say, leaning forward in her chair. Jack blinked and looked up at the IV bag hanging from the IV hook. Running a hand over his face he closed his eyes and sighed.
“Definitely not how I thought I’d be spending my evening.” Jack said dryly looking at her.
“Are we back to you just staring at me.” She sighed and propped her chin in her hand. “Which reminds me." She perked up. “Why were you in my house?”
“I was passing by and saw a guy trying to break into your house. Guess I should’ve announced my intentions a little clearer.”
“I’d say the next time you want to save the day, announce that you’re the good guy before entering someone’s domicile.” She smirked. His lips twitched.
“Wouldn’t it seem more suspicious to loudly announce that I’m the ‘good guy’ when the door was just busted in by a shadowy figure?” He closed his eyes and bit back a groan as a bout of nausea rolled over him. Jumping to her feet, Y/N rushed to his side and put a hand to his forehead. He hissed and drew back, narrowing his eyes at her.
“I’m so sorry, Mr. Thompson!” She reached towards him again, but he held up a hand.
“Please, just sit.” He held his head and waived towards the chairs. Nodding, she pulled a chair closer to him and sat. “By the way.” Jack narrowed his eyes and folded his arms slowly. “Have we met before? I’m not trying to be rude, but I don’t think I know you.” Y/N chuckled and leaned back in her chair.
“Yes and no, Mr. Thompson.”
“Care to elaborate?” Jack cocked a brow and motioned for her to continue.
“Ah, that’s a long story, Mr. Thompson.”

pairing: jack thompson x reader (requested by: @tenaciouszombiewombat)
summary: based on the quote "You like because and you love despite. You like someone because of all of their qualities, and you love someone despite some of their qualities." from Set it Up (one of my favorite movies, go watch it if you haven't!)
words: 0.4k
a/n: last belated valentine's blurb complete! and for jack thompson no less! sorry for the wait lovely, but I do really hope that you enjoy!
oOoOo
It had been something your grandmother told you over and over as you had grown up. "You like because and you love despite. You like someone because of all of their qualities, and you love someone despite some of their qualities."
At the time, it hadn't made much sense to you. In all your fantasies, your fairytale ending was a love at first sight, ride off into the sunset type dream. But little did you know that one Jack Thompson would eventually enter your life and turn it upside down.
The moment the two of you met, Jack had been a pain in your side. As two of the top agents at the SSR you always seemed to be butting heads both on cases and in the office. You had seen each other at your worst and screamed at each other until your voice was hoarse.
But despite all that, you still had managed to end up at the end of the aisle, years later. Somewhere along the way the two of you feel in love. And while it wasn't exactly the way you thought your fairytale romance would pan out, it was so much better. Despite all the harsh glares and angry words thrown at each other, you knew you and Jack were strong enough to make.
It was something you knew so deeply in your heart that you stood before your friends and family to profess that love to Jack.
"My grandmother always told me you like someone because of all of their qualities, and you love someone despite some of their qualities." you began. "Jack, you can be a pain in my ass, be cockier than you should be, and make me want to tear my hair out some nights." you told him as those in the audience chuckled.
Jack looked into your eyes and quirked his head with a slight smile wondering what your point was.
"And yet, I love you with all my heart. You've seen be at my best and at my worst, and you accept all parts of me. You're my best friend, and I truly don't know what I would do without you by my side. I am so excited to spend the rest of our lives together." you said, tears fogging over your eyes.
Even Jack had to discreetly wipe his tears away, giving your hands a firm squeeze as a silent "I love you." The ceremony soon finished and Jack started to lean in to kiss you and start your lives as a married couple.
"You and me, sweetheart." he whispered before closing the gap.
