Basics of HTML5: Let's build a webpage!
Tumblr media
I'm a huge advocate for learning HTML5 as your first coding language (remember, it's not a programming language)! HTML5 is a great and easy coding language to get you into the feel of coding, especially for complete complete beginners!
I see a lot of people on Tumblr wanting to get into just creating their own websites but don't know how to start - coding is a new thing to them! So, I'm here to help with the language I know like it's the back of my hand!
And I am also an advocate of building projects in order to learn anything in coding/programming! Thus, what better way to learn the basics of HTML5 than to actually build a simple webpage? Let's get started~!
Tumblr media
What is HTML5?
HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language, is a special coding language that is used to create webpages. With HTML, you can tell a web browser, like Google Chrome or Safari, what to display on a webpage, such as text, images, and videos. And 'HTML5' is just the latest version of HTML!
HTML tags are special words or symbols that you use to create webpages. You use these tags to tell the web browser what content to display on a webpage, like headings, paragraphs, images, links, and more. Tags come in pairs (most of the time) so you'll have an opening tag and a closing tag. An example of the syntax:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Simple Webpage
As I mentioned, we will be making a simple webpage for a person called David - see, he needs a portfolio webpage to start off with, and we're going to help me (as well as learning HTML5, of course).
Here is the code we will be using:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty code, I know but also a bit confusing - let's get into understanding the code by grouping them into chunks! But just a heads up, the code includes these tags:
!DOCTYPE html (mmh it's more of a declaration really)
html, head, body
title
h1, h2, h3
p, a
li, ul, ol
These are some of the common tags used in all webpages on the internet! Okay, let's look at the code finally~!
Tumblr media
The basic structure of every HTML page
Tumblr media
Every HTML file looks like this - it has to have all of these tags!
The first line, !DOCTYPE html tag, tells the web browser which version of HTML is being used.
The code is contained within html tags, which enclose the entire webpage.
The head tags contain information about the webpage, such as the title and links to other resources.
The body tags contain the main and visible content of the webpage, such as text, images, and videos.
Together, this code provides the basic structure for an HTML webpage, with the head tags containing metadata and the body tags containing the actual content.
In the head tags
Tumblr media
The title tags enclose the title of the webpage. In this example, the title is "My Programming Blog".
The title appears in the title bar of the web browser and is often used by search engines and social media sites to display the name of the webpage.
In the body tags - Headings and paragraphs
Tumblr media
The h1 tags create a main and biggest heading, which in this case is "Welcome to My Programming Blog!" - you can only have one h1 tag on a webpage.
The h2 tags create subheadings, which in this case include "Latest Post", "About Me", and "My Projects" - you can have multiple h2 to h6 tags on a page.
The h3 tags create a sub-subheading under h2 tags, which in this case is "How I Improved My Coding Skills".
The p tags create paragraphs of text that provide more detail about the blog's content and purpose, including a summary of the latest blog post and information about the author and their projects.
In the body tags - lists and links
Tumblr media
To start any list, you need to either start with ul tags or ol (ordered (numbered)) tags
The ul tags create an unordered list of items.
The li tags create list items within the unordered list.
Each list item includes a hyperlink created using the 'a' tags, with the text of the link being the name of a programming project.
The href attribute within each 'a' tag specifies the URL where the project code can be found on GitHub.
Attributes go inside the opening tags' arrows '<' and '>'.
Tumblr media
The End Result
Tumblr media
Boom - she's gorgeous, I know! A basic, simple webpage! We did it! You can see the page live + the code used here: [LINK]. Play around with the code, change things, experiment, break things, fix them - do what you need to learn further!
And that includes some online resources to help!
LINK 1 | LINK 2 | LINK 3
And some resources/posts I have shared about HTML
LINK 1 | LINK 2 | LINK 3
What next?
Learn CSS3! The page looks basic and looks like what pages were like when the internet was invented! You need colour, fancy fonts and layouts! CSS helps with that, as it is a styling sheet! Be sure to do some research but I also share resources on my blog under my #resources tag!
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading and best of luck learning coding/programming! Remember, this isn't the only way to get into coding! People even recommend languages like Python to be beginners' first language, but I say that HTML5 should be the first coding language and then Python is your first programming language - don't know the difference? I made a post about it here!!
But definitely for people going into Web Development, HTML5 all the way! I don't think you can avoid learning HTML5 with Web Development (not 100% sure though...)!
Anyhoo, have a nice day/night! 👋🏾💻💕

My First Engineering Gig!
It has been over a year since I became a software engineer at GitHub, and the experience has surprised me in more ways than one. I wanted to reflect on my first year in this new role, and what it was like getting myself to this point in my career.
About me
I worked in retail for most of my working life. I learned how to communicate with all kinds of people working for big box retailers, a skill that has helped me in my current role. I am really good at getting to the heart of the unmet needs of others.
One of the cool things about working with the public in this way is that you get to know them. It’s your job to get to know people. I learned about this world of tech, and I was so intrigued and genuinely excited about the possibilities for me in this space. I asked my customers a lot of dumb questions, but they lead me to answers that helped me figure out where to start with my journey towards becoming a software developer.
For the next 4 years I did a lot of dabbling with online tutorials for programming and computer science. I took classes at a community college for computer science, as I did not know the best way to pick up the skills necessary for the future job I was seeking. Learning this stuff was really hard for me. However, it was also a lot of fun, so I put myself out there and met people in the space. I asked more stupid questions. After about 3 years I was able to land my first technical support engineer role. I was ecstatic! It wasn’t a software engineer position, but I got to do things I was really good at; helping people with software and doing a little bit of coding.
How I got to become a software engineer
I started at GitHub in July of 2019 as a technical support engineer. I had actually been struggling to complete a coding bootcamp prior to joining. After I got the job, I moved on from the bootcamp without completing the program. I felt some shame about that. It bugged me that I didn’t complete the task I set out to do. How could I be taken seriously as an engineer if I couldn’t finish a bootcamp?
I buried that feeling of shame and worked toward becoming the best support engineer I could be. I thoroughly enjoyed the work I was doing. I enjoyed my teammates even more. There was always something new to learn, especially with the growing line of GitHub features.
Even so, I always had a move to engineering in the back of my mind.
My former skip-level manager and I had a regular one on one. During a meeting, he asked me to think about what I wanted for my career in the future. More importantly, he said to be deliberate about what I was seeking. We met again about a month later, and I told him that I wanted to be a software engineer. To my surprise, he said he was happy to help me get there.
While that manager was instrumental in putting me on my engineering career path, it was the relationships I built with other Hubbers in engineering  that really got the ball rolling. I started chatting with an experienced engineer, Lexi Galantino. We had conversations about my experience and what I was learning.  She took an interest in my development and sought to help me move closer to my goal of becoming an engineer.
Working with the Discussions team
Lexi believed in me and my goals. She wanted to do more to help, so she came up with the idea of putting me on a trial run with the Discussions team. Lexi created a proposal which entailed me working full-time with the engineers on her team to build out a small feature within the Discussions product.
I worked with the Discussions team for about 6 weeks, with two weeks of that time on full-time engineering work. The rest of that time I split between my regular support responsibilities and the Discussions team. I was able to finish the project work earlier than the projected time, and I learned a great deal about how our engineers work together. I had a lot of fun working with the team. They really embraced me as one of them. It made me feel awesome! Shortly after the trial period was done, I was asked to apply for one of the open positions. I actually declined, because I thought I wasn’t ready to make the leap to engineering just yet.
However, after delivering that news, I spoke to the manager of the Discussions team. She told me that my personal reservations about myself were unfounded in this situation. It turns out the team really did like working with me, and they wanted me to join as a full time engineer. It was understood that I was really inexperienced compared to a traditional hire, however that was okay. This team was very senior heavy, and they wanted to balance it out with some early career engineers. I didn’t say no twice, and I began the interview process shortly after that conversation. In August of 2020 I became a software engineer at GitHub!
Working as an engineer
The GitHub Support team is full of some of the most caring, understanding and knowledgeable people I’ve ever worked with. I felt at home with this team. It was really exciting to move to engineering, but also very scary.
Prior to landing a full-time engineering role, I had a lot of negative expectations about what it would be like to work on a team with other more experienced engineers. My general fears revolved around working in a competitive, and hostile environment.
Since I started in the engineering organization, my teammates and managers have dispelled so many of my previous assumptions about what it would look like to be an engineer at a company like GitHub. Everyone I work with has been kind, and extremely helpful. They are eager to make sure I have the tools I need to become a better engineer.
Learning to work with others
There’s no detailed roadmap for someone new to engineering. There’s a lot of freedom to create your own path towards proficiency in the role, however it can be challenging to know how to move forward on projects and tasks without the guidance of more experienced engineers.
Pairing is awesome!
I aim to spend about 3 hours a week pairing with teammates and other engineers outside of my immediate team. I have found that I learn and retain more when I can discuss concepts aloud. When pairing, I am usually the driver. Meaning, I will be the one that writes the code with the guidance of my pairing partner. I find that this gets me to be more active in the development process. Things tend to go slower this way, but it gives me the opportunity to ask questions, think more deeply about the problem/task in front of me. My pairing buddy can provide guidance rather than coding everything themselves.
This pairing method took some time to get used to, as I had to get over my fear of looking dumb. My teammates have given me the psychological safety that is necessary for learning, as making mistakes and not knowing things is all a part of growing as an engineer. I like pairing with different engineers, as each one has a unique way of coaching. Some have held my hand quite a bit during a pairing session, while others will just give suggestions, hints or ask questions to help nudge me in the right direction. All these approaches were necessary in breaking through the various sticking points I have in building software.
The most important skill I have improved is getting over my fear of asking for help. It has been invaluable when it comes to improving as an engineer. I will ask questions in Slack, issues and PRs. Asking questions is a skill in and of itself. I have definitely improved in this area since I joined the engineering org.
While I do believe that you learn more by doing, reading others’ code has been a valuable experience. Reviewing code has shown me different programming patterns, introduced me to new Ruby methods, and helped me to better navigate our codebase.
What is next?
Always be learning.
I am looking forward to sharing my opinions and perspectives more going forward. There is a lot I can draw from in regards to my support experience. I have gained a great deal of confidence over the past year, and it’s only natural to feel more comfortable sharing my ideas on how we build things at GitHub.

They could have solved this sooner if any of them bothered to look at a calendar
Hear me out
Ninjago doesn't have the best track record with dates (Wu's lifetime...) and I don't expect DR to be any better at it. But rewatching the season I realized the fact that when Lloyd narrates, he mentions being "alone for weeks" and, in the carnival, recalls not being around many people in a while, nailing down how he was secluded to the monastery during those weeks he woke up alone. This is fine, typical Lloyd behavior, just that when Nya encounters Cole, he says years. Lloyd has no reason to lie, he doesn't have to make it seem like he was less time around so if he is not lying, and he truly was weeks alone, while Cole spends years lost after the merge? What happened?
And Nya and Kai! Kai woke up early enough, and in the bounty! to be able to map and travel a big part of the new land and try to find his way back, we don't know his side, but considering he pretty much arrived and then left again, had he entered the monastery before? I do believe he was longer out, awake and traveling. Nya also mentions having traveled before encountering the cranglings-- and she was on foot, she's resilient and strong, but for how long can you travel unknown terrain without a vehicle and survive it.
The idea of time getting messed up is plausible, other than reality coming undone and messing up every physics law-Cole is hanging out with what seems to be a kid formling, whose realm is confirmed to move differently time-wise, how could two different time progressions reacted to each other? How did that affect dates? Growing rates? So interesting.
I want to know if dr is planning on going somewhere with this, if not, then it'll be one more concept I'll rotate in my brain like a skewer, its such an interesting concept to me
Its also free trauma for the ninja! Win-Win

have a sorta long snippet of hoa eddie finally starting to figure his shit out. he's a fucking loser. i love him.
Once Buck’s drifted off to sleep, snug and relaxed under the big blanket, Eddie rolls over and grabs his phone off the nightstand. He opens one eye, turns the brightness all the way down, clicks onto the browser, and types am i gay quiz in the search bar.  Dozens of links pop up. He clicks on the first one, marks the answers that resonate the most with him, and frowns when his results of 89% straight flash on the screen with a sullen face.  “What the fuck does that even mean?” he mumbles and then, with a fierceness that crinkles his brow, clicks off the quiz and finds another.  He takes seven more, each a little more deranged than the last, and throws his phone to the hardwood floor when he gets his eighth variation of Unfortunately, you aren’t gay! because he’s upset. It thuds loud and heavy, and slides face up all the way to his closet; the screen shines bright like a little flashlight, illuminating the corner.  Eddie huffs, flops onto his back, crosses his arms over his chest, and pouts.  How dare those quizzes diagnose him heterosexual? Yeah, sure, he has a preference for feminine-presenting people, but he’s had plenty of cock to know he’s not straight, too, and being in heterosexual-passing relationships don’t make him any less queer. He’s worked too damn hard to accept himself, selfishly and fearlessly and totally, to let a few quizzes invalid him.  Which—why was he taking the quizzes in the first place? He knows he’s queer and he doesn’t need a pompous test on the Internet to tell him so, Christ. He’s acting like a lovestruck kid with his first crush on another boy.  The absurdity of the situation makes him giggle. He swipes a hand over his face to muffle his laughter, but his body shakes, so near Buck’s, and it rouses Buck around. Eddie sobers and shuts his eyes, feigning sleep.  It doesn’t work.  This must be how Christopher feels when it’s past his negotiated bedtime of midnight.  Buck murmurs, a pitiful noise, and snuffles close. “Eddie?” He noses along Eddie’s shoulder until he has his face stuffed in Eddie’s throat, right where his pulse throbs. “Wha’s goin’ on? Heard a noise.”  “It’s fine,” he says, wrapping Buck up in his arms and pulling him in, until he’s nearly laid out atop Eddie’s body. His weight feels nice, solid and sturdy. “Go back to sleep.”  Buck smacks his lips, puffs his stinky breath in Eddie’s face, and sighs. “M’kay.” He cuddles in, nestling up over Eddie’s body like three’s no other place in the world he wants to be, and goes still. “Nighty night.”  Eddie exhales. “Night, Buck,” he says, setting his chin on top of Buck’s head and running his fingers through Buck’s sweaty, frizzy hair.  He looks at his phone in the corner one last time and wonders if there are any quizzes on the Internet that might help him figure out if he’s in love with his best friend before he eventually dozes off, too, wrapped up tight beneath Buck’s big body.

Any layout ideas?
I've been trying to update my neocities site for accessibility reasons, and decided to get rid of the stuff making the homepage and oc hub different from the other pages. So now I have two new problems: I'm not sure how to change the color of links (for the CSS file), and I have no ideas for the new layout. I'm pretty new to coding from scratch in HTML, but I really want to do something other than plain rectangles. My current color palette is a very dark grey under pastel text (there's only pastel pinkish-purple as of now, and once I figure out how to change text colors for bold text, italicized text, and text that contains links (like again, because I thought I would remember when I read the code for the layout I first had), it should become a pastel rainbow)

Ok I saw someone who's seen the screeners for season three get asked about the Francesca rumors and they said there was no indication Michael was a woman and when asked who they think is going to be the lead next season they said probably Fran because there's no set up for Benedict or Eloise.
We’ll see. I would be surprised if someone saw screeners for all 8 episodes for a two-part season at once and was willing to tell y’all everything you needed to know weeks before the first part of show came out, but that’s just me! I've seen people indicate that they received screeners for four episodes, or six episodes, but not all eight.
The rumors about Fran aren’t based on someone seeing screeners but someone allegedly hearing things from people closer to the show, as well as a casting call for a female character that is allegedly meant to be prominent in s4, with sex scenes included. You'd think that would either be Sophie or some other important female character, right? But this character's description centers on someone devilishly charming~ with a flirty exterior that masks a sensitive, soulful interior. Doesn't sound like Sophie.
Someone is lying, right? OR someone saw every episode except the last one or two, and this character only showed up in the final ep (which is what the genderbending rumors have indicated) and the person watching the screeners is making assumptions about where the unseen episodes will lead.
I’ll just say this: I…… don’t care if they do it or not. I mean, tbh, I find watching fan reactions far more entertaining than watching the show. If the idea of a genderflipped ANYONE bugs someone, I’d tell that someone to be emotionally prepared for that or whatever lmao because I think this show’s team profoundly dgaf about what book fans think. Which honestly? Fair. The issue is less changes and more…. Writing quality. To me, it's kind of irrelevant; if they give Fran a female love interest, that dramatically changes the plot of WHWW and it's basically their own thing, albeit with some WHWW framing influence (John dying and the new love being his relative). But if they kept Michael male, I'm sure the resulting storyline would be nothing like the book anyway. S1 is the only story that seems to have retained much of a resemblance to the book. I mean, s3 remains to be seen, but Colin wasn't out there trying to give Penelope the She's All That treatment in the book.
Either way. I like that book, and I'll always have that book, so to reiterate: do your own research if you wish, make your own predictions, I do not have a dog in this hunt. The only thing that would intrigue me would be if they genderflipped the story AND made it the central romance of s4. That would honestly surprise me, and I guess that it's the only thing that I'd really second guess. Not because I think the show wouldn't center a queer couple, necessarily, as a love story. I'd just, and I say this as someone who tries to read and review as many sapphic romance novels as I can, be surprised that this show would center a f/f pairing versus an m/m pairing. The lack of support for f/f compared to m/m across ALL media is like... notorious.
But if it's a subplot to a central m/f story--I could totally see that.

A Guide to Abbreviations and Terminology on Chicken Smoothie
Ah, yes! CS abbreviations. There are so many, lol, especially trading lingo. Let's see...
Pets' Growth Stages
OK, to start off there are a handful of easy abbreviations that refer to pets' growth stages:
PPS / EPPS / and kinda, sorta GUPPS
PPS stands for Peter Pan Syndrome and refers to a pet that will never grow to an adult stage. It's usually an "outcome" in a litter that is a little special like that c: Most (but not all) PPS pets will have that abbreviation on the pet image, and the pet info page will say: "PPS This pet has "PPS". What's that? Here's a PPS pet from February:
Tumblr media
EPPS is a term that means "early" or "extreme" PPS and is used to refer to PPS pets that never grew from their newborn/first stage. Here's an EPPS pet from February:
Tumblr media
Finally, GUPPS stands for "grown up" PPS. This one's a bit weirder because it refers almost exclusively to pets that are released during the advent calendar, when artists of a PPS pet released earlier in the year choose to create an adult version of it. For example, this puppy was originally released in Oct. 2023, then the artist made a "grown up" version for the Advent Calendar in December. The grown up version is a GUPPS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trading
The shorthand "WL" stands for "Wish List." The acronym "FTT" stands for Fair-Trade Thread, which is a very popular and useful thread on the forum where you can post a link to a trade you sent or received, and other users will give their opinion on whether it seems fair or not. Some users refer to duplicate pets of the same outcome as "dupes."
Trading Status There are also some shorthand terms users will write into their pet names or pet group names that give you an idea of their trading status, like:
HTTF - "hard to trade for"
VHTTF - "very hard to trade for"
NFT - "not for trade"
UFT - "up for trade"
UFA - "up for auction," or sometimes, in the free adoptions forum board "up for adoption"
Pets' Rarities There are a handful of very easy-to-learn abbreviations that refer to pets' rarities:
OMGSC - OMG So Common
EC/XC - Extremely Common
VC - Very Common
C - Common
UC - Uncommon
VUC - Very Uncommon
EU/EUC/XUC - Extremely Uncommon
R - Rare
VR- Very Rare
ER - Extremely Rare
OMGSR - OMG So Rare
High Value Trades This is where things start to get complex. I'll explain some abbreviations that are common when trading high value pets, but if you start getting confused about what even is happening at this stage, don't stress about it: we can go over how high value trades work and whatnot in the future, if you like c:
High Value Pets Usually, the user base will agree on names for certain pet litters and outcomes to make trading and talking about pets easier. So if someone says "White February," I know they're talking about this white wolf that was originally released in 2009.There are certain high-value pets that come up so often in discussion that users have shorthanded their names into acronyms. Here are some popular examples I can think of:
BA - Black advent
BMD - Bernese mountain dog
TWA - Timberwolf advent
RBM - Rainbow mane
GWJ - Growing white July
BEG - Black-eyed galaxy
CEG - Clear-eyed galaxy
GSD - German Shepherd Dog
WWA - Winged wood angel
(Tangent: if you know the year and month a pet was released but not their (un)official name, there's a really cool archive run by CS users called Chicken Smoothie Transpets that basically functions like the archive, but it lists the widely agreed-upon names of relevant pets, including the acronyms!).
High Value Worth Shorthands Because trading high-value pets on CS can be a bit complex (since we don't know exactly how much rarer certain pets are compared to others; we only know estimates according to their rarity labels), there have been user researched and made guides to trading OMGSR and ER pets taking into account their demand and estimating how many are found up for trade. The current such guide that seems to be popular right now is Horror's [🐝] Guide to Trading Every Pet on CS. In order to trade certain high-value pets for others at the more or less agreed upon values, most of the userbase use certain labels to describe a pet's worth:
OR - Stands for Old Rares and refers to rare pets from 2010-2011
MA - Is equal in worth to 10 ORs. It stands for "Mid Advent," mostly as a leftover term from an older guide. It's not really important to know exactly why this term is used, and I feel like I am already giving you too much info, so maybe I can tell you the story another time XD. MAs are used to measure the more valuable pets on the site.
Non - Is equal in worth to 10 MAs (or 100 ORs). The term comes from the unofficial names of some of the earliest dogs to be released on CS.
True Date, Un-Released and Re-Released Pets Lore - December 18th is a really exciting day for the whole CS userbase. It is the day. The only day when all users have a chance to adopt pets that were released on previous years and are no longer available though the Adopt page. It is the only day you can adopt a very rare or more valuable pet reliably on the site—I hope you're around for that!
RR - Pets from previous years that are adopted on Dec. 18th are called Re-released pets, or RRs.
TD - In contrast, pets that were adopted in the month and year when they were originally released are called True Date pets, or TDs.
UR - Finally, Un-released pets, or URs are also adopted only on December 18th, but unlike every other pet given out on that day, UR pets have never been released normally before. They are always extremely rare and valuable. You can find the UR pets released each year under the "Special Releases" tab of the archive.
COPPA Sorry for the info-dump. Take a breath, we're back in easy territory c: You may see users mention COPPA users in their tarde rules and such. The acronym stands for "Children's Online Privacy Protection Act." To comply with this act, CS allows kids under 13 years old in the US to make an account and collect pets, but not to participate in the forums or write trade messages.
And, well, that's probably too much information already! But I hope you find it helpful. And if you have any questions about any abbreviation or terminology being used around the site, don't hesitate to ask. I promise to return a shorter answer next time! Let me know what else I can help out with or if you want to dig deeper into any of the subjects I mentioned above. c:
