Why "Stand" becomes my favorite battle system

Major Spoilers ahead, so BEWARE!!!

1. It is learning, NOT training

Because I love the spontaneity it has, unlike its predecessor hamon and other mainstream shounen battle systems usually do; the like of such as nen, chakra, kido-zanpakutou-bankai etc in which you need proper training and proper mentor to develop it. Stand can only be learned by using & applying it during the battle... ON THE SPOT!!! You just have to count on your creativity & quick thinking. Even One Piece, while it has Devil Fruit system which is as unique as Stand, failed the moment haki got introduced because... well, haki need to be trained and you need a pro to teach you.

Back then (the first time I started JoJo) I was surprised when Stand was introduced for the first time in Stardust Crusaders (evil spirit LOL) then we moved on to the introduction & gathering for the party -> Holy got in critical situation -> JoJo's gang started their journey to Egypt to fight the big bad WTF!! When will they train their Stands?? Turned out that it wasn't need at all. I think, Stand is when the users just use it whenever the fight happens or by using random people as guinea pigs mischievously. Having a veteran Stand user to train you how to use your Stand is... useless. Even how to summon it is so simple:

"It will manifest whenever you want to protect yourself or want to beat the sh*t out of your enemy." (credited to Josuke from part 4)

2. Experienced>>>Newbie?? MUDA MUDA

Having greater experience in Stand battle won't guarantee you to have greater chance of winning against the barely new Stand users. Proven by Jotaro, equipped with Star Platinum Za Warudo & his experience in battling many Stand users in Stardust Crusaders his past, against The Rats in part 4 (DiU). Had Josuke not been there with his Crazy Diamond, Jotaro would likely lose. Even Janken Boy (the newly Boy2Man's user) was capable to put Rohan in trouble.

This is in contrast with Hunter x Hunter verse, in which the well experienced/veteran nen users are highly respected there. Nen users with 40+ years experience will likely curb stomp newly nen users who just trained for a month. That's why training with pro nen users is really vital there.

3. "This must be the work of enemy's Stand"

Whenever something bizarre happens, we can assume that it must be the work of Stand but it can't be 100% sure. Even if we know it is a Stand's power, who is the user will still be a mystery. What I love about Stand is that there is no such thing like "I detect some menacing aura" or a complicated technique to hide your aura Stand. How to hide your Stand is just as simple as how to use your Stand; don't reveal your Stand or foolishly explain your power!! That's why we have to be very observant & intuitive to determine which the enemy Stand & the user.

4. The stats are simple

This is very subjective though, but I found that the stat system is simple but helpful. This is maybe confusing for some people, but what I mean about the stats is not how accurate they are... but more like about how helpful they are for me to create a fictional superpowers. Like many other stats in any fiction/shounen's databook, they are prone to be inconsistent or inaccurate. Therefore, always consider the feats >>> the stats whenever you want to do powerscaling/comparison.

But the things that are on the list from JoJo stats are very helpful for me in creating the powers. Destructive Power, Speed, Durability, Potential, Precision, Range... this list is really vital for creating a superpower imo. I love to use these stats to determine the limitation whenever I create a superpower ability, not only for JoJo Stand, but also for other fictional battle systems such as nen, devil fruit, quirk, etc (even though it's hidden). That's why I found that Stand is the easiest to create in creating superpowers compared to others. Here is the example:

Destructive Power: How strong your power or your character can destroy?

Speed: How fast your power takes the effect or how fast your character can move?

Durability: How much destructive power your character can withstand?

Potential: What your power can do right now? How far can your power develop? What's it maximum potential?

Precision: Is your attack focused or AoE type?

Range: How far your power will be effective? Do you have to come close to attack or can you do it from afar?

Albeit they sound generic, JoJo's stats are the most basic things that we have to consider whenever we want to create a power. You don't have to answer those question in numbers, but you can answer them in descriptive form.

5. It's more about concept/application than a theme

Unlike some battle systems in which the rule of "one theme is exclusive for one character" is often applied. The theme in JoJo's Stand is very flexible, we can have 3 ice-themed Stands (Horus, White Album, Born This Way(?), 5 time-manipulator Stands (The World, King Crimson, KQ: Bite The Dust, Made in Heaven, Mandom), 2 erasing-themed Stands (Cream & The Hand), 2 hair-manipulating Stands (Love Deluxe & Love Love Deluxe), 2 size-themed Stands (Little Feet & Goo Goo Dolls), 3 memory-reading Stands (Heaven's Door, Whitesnake, California King Bed) etc. They might shared the same theme but how they operate and the effect on the enemies are really different. It's not divided by the theme but rather by the type and application.

Compared to Stand, I found that the theme variation in Devil Fruits is more rigid: Logia (elemental), Zoan (animal theme) and Paramecia (similar to Stand in theme variation but more exclusive in possession). It is hard to create a DF power with the same theme especially if they already existed in canon. The easiest for me is to create Zoan DF as there are so many animal species in this world (too bad that Zoan is the least interesting imo). While Yuki Yuki no Mi (snow) is similar to Hie Hie no Mi (ice), one is absolutely inferior to the other.

PS: I'm not bashing Hunter x Hunter, One Piece & others, in fact I also love those shows... but this is about Stand afterall.

Also, I was thinking that no such thing of being Standless (by a crappy special tool like a limiter or exorcism), no dramatic bullshit of your aura getting blocked and suddenly you can't use Stand or lose your power or you run out of stamina/energy from overused Stand while you are still completely unharmed. You have to be dying (or got donutted) first to get in this state. Once you have a Stand, you will be stuck with it forever. Even Kakyoin was still able to use his last Emerald Splash while dying. Though you may argue in the case of Death 13, Boy2Man & Man in The Mirror arc, but it is not entirely being Standless imo as Fugo was still able to summon Purple Haze but got separated from it ... sadly that it got debunked by Whitesnake's ability :-(.

“You have no idea who I am do you?” paired with calming someone down after a nightmare.

Warnings: Fluff, maybe, language, violence, memory loss, lost love, nightmares, trauma…basically if you’re under 18, don’t read this!

Summary: You are a SHIELD agent, one of the top elite. Not only do you kick ass with weapons and without, you can also control elements ie. Earth, fire, wind, water, electrical current and light. You can’t remember anything past 6 years ago, due to a terrible accident, or so you’ve been told. Doctors say your memories may never come back. So what happens when they do start to return?

Six years ago:

“I’m just going to the store to get eggs and milk, then pick up a deluxe pizza on my way home.” Y/N shouted down the basement stairs to her hubby. Clint peeked around the corner and looked up at her with his best puppy dog eyes. She caved and sighed. “Alright, ham and pineapple, and a 6-pack of Bud Light, but only because I love you and because it’s your birthday.”

Clint ran up the stairs and wrapped Y/N in his arms, and giving her a short, intimate kiss, promising some fun later. She threw her arms around his neck, moaning into his kiss. “Thanks honey. You are really the best, you know that? You kick ass, save the world, and you’re mine.” he whispered in her ear.

She smiled, “Of course I know Clint, and I’m lucky to have you too.” She said, winking at him and kissing him on the nose. “Who else could I get to fix the toilet, help me save the world, and kill all the spiders for me. You’re indispensable.” Y/N giggled as Clint reached for her sides, especially that ticklish spot by her ribcage. She squealed and tried to tickle him back, but he backed her against the wall. “Ok, ok. I give.” He was laughing as hard as she was as they kissed then, both breathless and both exceedingly happy.

As she got in the car, she remembered his reaction that morning as she presented his birthday present, neatly wrapped with an iridescent bow and matching ribbon. As he opened it, and realization set in, a huge grin appeared on his face, and in an instant he was swinging her around, showering her with hugs and kisses, the framed ultrasound picture still in his hand. She was about ten weeks according to the tests, and everything looked exactly the way it should, no abnormalities. It was too soon to know the gender, but she didn’t care. They were pregnant.

She listened to radio as she drove, weather reports and warnings were filling every station she tuned in to. Then she hit a winter onslaught. The sky darkened, and in the blink of an eye a torrential downpour of ice and snow suddenly clouded her vision. As she tried to use her power to lessen the storm’s intensity, another car lost traction on the icy street, and rammed into Y/N’s SUV. The force of the impact caused her car to break through the barrier of the bridge, and plummet head first into the frigid waters below. Blackness and water were everywhere, Y/N tried to move the water and get the car out, but there was too much ice. Instead of moving the car out, the ice pushed it down to the bottom. Her cracked windshield began leaking, the cold beginning to seep in, and without any access to wind, she couldn’t get out.

Desperate to free herself from her seemingly inescapable prison, she used light to melt what remained of the window, bracing herself for the onslaught of arctic liquid that would come at her. It wasn’t enough, the pressure slammed into her, knocking breath from her lungs, not letting her get air before enveloping her. Y/N tried to focus as she swam out the window toward the surface. Finding a small opening still in the layer of ice that covered the river, she came up for air, trying to grab the top of the ice. She could hear people yelling, but was too cold to say anything. Then before she could make the water warmer and get herself to shore, she was pulled under by the current, her head striking the jagged edge of the ice, and her world went black.

Present day:

Y/N stared at the transfer notice in her hand. Why on earth, especially since she really liked her current posting in Ireland, would she all of a sudden need to go to New York. Fuck this shit. Her head began to pound, and she absently grabbed a bottle from her pocket, popped two white T-3’s and went back to cleaning out her room. There was some small part of her that wishes she was normal, with a normal job, maybe a normal family. But noooo, she was a government assassin, and an inhuman, which made her a valuable commodity, and apparently needed in New York. She looked out her window, thinking how much she was going to miss all the lush green countryside and the peaceful walks amongst that greenery.

New York, where the aliens had attacked some time before, and the Avengers initiative was enacted. She knew who Nick Fury was, especially since he was the first person she had seen when she’d awoken from her coma. They had met on numerous occasions since, and each time he had attempted to recruit her to help with the Avengers. But she had declined each time, not wanting to leave Europe. She wasn’t European by birth, but she’d grown to love it here since being re-assigned after her accident, the one where she lost a lot of her life, her memories gone, locked away in the deep recesses of her mind. Doctors said the memories could come back at some point, or they may never return. What was worse, SHIELD files had been erased of her life before. It was almost as if they were hiding something from her, either for mental health reasons, or simply because they liked her better now. And no one ‘knew’ anything, or so they said, even Fury, stating that maybe she shouldn’t keep digging. She had tried social media, phone records, DMV records, anything, and they all came up blank. It was as if she’d never existed before, and it nagged at her conscience.

She was soon packed and on board the small plane that would take her across the ocean. Agent Phil Coulson met her at the airstrip when she landed, to escort her to their base. “Welcome here Y/N.” He extended his hand and she took it happily. Phil was something of a legend amongst the elite agents, having been the force behind putting together the A-team as she liked to call them. And truth be told, she was anxious to meet them, having been a fan for a while now. Natasha Romanova was kind of a role model, even though the age difference was only 2 years, she was everything Y/N aspired to be. There were times she imagined sparing with Widow, just to see who could best who first, though she suspected for as good as she was, Natasha was better, having trained from a young age.

When they finally arrived at the ‘secret’ base, she was shown to her quarters, where she set to work unpacking and changing out of her travel clothes. Making sure her identification was properly displayed, she took herself on a self-guided tour of the facility. It was actually pretty nice digs, and pretty big, much bigger than the Irish base. Not watching in front of her, because she was busy looking around, she walked into a brick wall, which actually wasn’t a wall at all. Thor had been walking back from the cafeteria with some java for the road, when Y/N bumped into him, causing hot liquid to erupt from the cup, and spill all over both parties.

Y/N immediately apologized. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry. Are you hurt? Let me help.” And bent down to retrieve pieces of broken pottery that was the cup.

Thor smiled warmly. “No harm done. There is always more coffee to be had. Are you new here?” he asked, seeing your name badge.

Her cheeks turned a deep shade of crimson. “That obvious huh. Yeah, just transferred in from Ireland. I’m Y/N. You must be Thor.” She stated casually, gesturing at his armor and cape, and of course that infamous hammer. Mjolnir was the most fascinating weapon she’d ever seen. Y/N pointed to the beautiful but deadly item in his hand. “I know I can’t pick it up, but can I…well…touch it? Sorry, that sounded weird. It’s just a really awesome hammer.” She blushed more, realizing how stupid that sounded.

Thor chuckled. “Not at all my lady. By all means, feel free to gaze upon the power of the mighty Mjolnir. However I must warn you, it does tend to shock those who touch it, except me of course.”

Y/N raised a brow, now completely thrilled. She reached out her hand and ran it across the Asgardian symbols and craftmanship, and did indeed get a shock. But rather than sting, it seemed to blend into her skin and ignite her own power. Soon her body and Mjolnir were sharing electrical current, the hammer increasing the strength of Y/N’s energy output. Thor watched the interaction, completely taken aback with what was transpiring in front of him. Never in his lifetime had anyone been able to create that kind of power with his hammer except for himself. Now his curiosity was peaked, and he offered Y/N the weapon to hold. Frowning but not unwilling to try, she accepted the gift, and both were genuinely shocked when the hammer allowed her to hold it.

Some of the nearby agents had stopped to witness this event, including Fury and Coulson, and a wide range of expressions filled their faces, from shock, to amazement, to genuine wow. Y/N handed the hammer back to Thor when she saw the attention she had attracted. Excusing herself, she made her way over to Nick Fury and extended her hand. “Sir, good to see you again.” You said with respect, and perhaps a touch of affection. Fury was like the older brother, always protecting her and covering her ass when she dug into files she shouldn’t.

Fury accepted the gesture and returned the handshake. “Y/N. Haven’t changed a bit I see. Still manage to find new and interesting ways to make yourself known.”

Y/N smiled. “Yes sir! Now, on with the tour!” She gave a mock salute, earning a smirk from Coulson and a glare from Fury. He didn’t scold her, but she did make herself scarce, as the tour wasn’t quite done yet anyways.

She had been briefed on the plane with regards to the nature of her re-assignment. Power, they needed whatever they could get, and Y/N’s power was amongst the best in the entire SHIELD world. Talks of aliens and impending doom were everywhere. But the agency seemed especially worried. Whatever. Steady paychecks helped with the negotiations, landing herself a nice raise and bonus incentive. She could only hope that her ‘headaches’ and ‘nightmares’ didn’t interfere with her work. It wasn’t bad now, not like it was when she’d first awaken, but it still happened on occasion. It was like a never-ending cycle of torment, flashes of near death, a storm, drowning. But she could never move past those images. She would wake in cold sweats, shaking, screaming, only to realize she was alone and in no present danger. Only once did the flashbacks happen during a mission, luckily it was Fury and Hill that accompanied her for it, and neither were hurt in the process.

Fury did advise her to see a counsellor after, and she did. But the talks, while they did help some, were only that, talk. Nothing could be done to bring back the rest of the memories. It was just plain annoying sometimes. And times like this, when she was this pissed, were the times where she found exercise to be a good stress reliever. So she made her way around the base until she came across the training room, where she found Nat taking on Steve Rogers. Amused, she stood by the door and watched. Where Steve was fast and strong, Widow was small and agile, both were quick and equally deadly in their own right. Just as Y/N sat down, Steve caught movement out of the corner of his eye and Nat flipped him, taking him out for the count.

Steve got up as you walked over to apologize. “I’m sorry. I distracted you. Good match though.” You remarked.

Nat came over to join. “It wasn’t bad. Don’t apologize though. Distraction can’t be used as an excuse.” Then she looked over at Y/N. “Do you want to go a round?” she asked quizzically.

You raised a brow. “Sure. I’m Y/N. I just transferred in from Ireland.” You shook hands with Steve and with Nat.

“Nice to meet you Y/N.” Nat smiled. “Do you need to change?”

“Nope. I’m good.”

Nat motioned Y/N over to the mat. A few people stopped to watch, including Steve. Y/N put her hands up. “I won’t use my abilities. This will just be hand to hand.” She promised.

It was Nat’s turn to be surprised. “Abilities? You’re inhuman?” Y/N nodded. “That’s where I heard your name from.” She shrugged. “I’m ready whenever you are.”

Nat took her fight stance, as did Y/N. For what seemed like an eternity neither moved, studying the other, watching like a lion stalking prey. Then Nat lunged, her body diving to sweep Y/N’s feet from under her. But she dodged, anticipating Widow’s tactics, and made a beeline for her arm to disable her. She countered, throwing a kick at Y/N’s arm, which was deflected, and coming around with a backhand to attack. Ducking, Y/N landed a small punch in her midsection. Nat quickly brought her knee up, catching Y/N’s chin, causing her to bite her lip. Y/N recovered quick, bringing her leg sweeping low in a circle, and connected with Nat’s ankle. She fell back, but was back on her feet quickly.

Back and forth they went, minutes ticking by, people beginning to cheer and wager on who would actually win. Without using her power, she was pretty evenly matched with her idol. For a while it seemed as though no one would ever win. Then someone else stopped to watch the fight. Someone who went white upon seeing who his friend was fighting. He pushed through the crowds to get a front row seat, unable to believe what he was seeing. “Y/N?” he whispered.

Y/N looked up at the mention of her name, and Nat got the upper hand, setting Y/N up and taking her down with that head-scissor lock flip. Gasping for air, Y/N looked for the owner of the voice that had cost her the match. Then leaning over her, offering a hand up, was a handsome, blue-eyed man that looked like he’d seen a ghost. Only he was staring at her, not a ghost. He kept her hand in his, almost afraid to let go.

Y/N tried to remove her hand, but he held firm, as if she would disappear if he let go. “Y/N. What the hell? I…it’s been 6 years. Where have you been? Why didn’t you come back if you weren’t dead? I don’t understand…” his voice trailed off as he studied Y/N’s confused look. Realization dawned on him then, and he let her hand go. “You have no idea who I am, do you?”

Y/N bit her lip, taking a step back as she shook her head. “No, sorry. Ummm…” Her head began jackhammering in her skull, and she ran, needing to get away from him, from everyone, just needing to be alone.

It was Nick who came knocking on her door. She let him in, only because she knew he wouldn’t go away. He motioned to sit, and Y/N nodded. The flashbacks began adding images, of a man with light brown hair, blue eyes. Holding her, making love to her, kissing her. Not even the T3’s were helping now. With tears streaming down her face, she looked into the eyes of the man she had learned to trust, the man who she was pretty sure had been partially lying to her all these years.

“I want the truth Nick, and I want it now.” Y/N wiped away a tear and glared at the man in front of her. “Who in the hell is that man and why did he act like he knew me?”

Nick sighed. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a USB and threw it on the bed beside her. She looked at it, then back at Nick. Anger slowly seeped through her usually calm façade, and he held his hands up as a peace offering. “These are the files you’ve been searching for all these years. Your life before the accident, your original posting, and everything else you tried to find. That man in the gym, Agent Barton, was your husband of 5 years, and your childhood friend, your high school sweetheart, and your first love. The day of your accident, it was his birthday. Your gift to him was an ultrasound picture of the 10-week-old fetus you carried. A violent storm swept into the area when you were driving to the store, your car was run off the road and into the icy river. You nearly drown. You went into a hyperthermia-induced coma. Your abilities are quite powerful, but ice doesn’t like you. You couldn’t save yourself fast enough. You lost the baby. The memory loss was from a concussion suffered when your head found the edge of a sharp jagged ice chunk. You know the rest of this past 6 years. Everything else is on there.” He gestured to the piece of tech, and got up to leave.

Y/N just stared at the wall, barely acknowledging Nick’s exit. For two hours she just sat there, trying to process everything she’d just heard. Her skull felt like a basketball pounding on pavement. She couldn’t keep her eyes open as the world started spinning. Her body hit the mattress, feeling like lead. Her mind flashed images, dark water, sleet, ice, cold water rushing at her, the current pulling her under the ice, her chest hurting from lack of oxygen, panic. She tried to scream but the water muffled the sound. She flailed, clawing at the ice, needing the air, needing to live. Suddenly arms were holding her, shaking her, a warm male voice was calling her name.

Clint had been walking slowly toward her room, trying to figure out how to talk to her. Then her screams broke through his thoughts and he tore down the hallway, opening her door in less than 3 seconds. She was choking, her breath ragged, like she couldn’t get any air. She was panicking. She was having a nightmare. He sat on the bed and gathered her into his arms, and held her, stroking her hair, whispering soothing words.

She opened her eyes to the man who was a stranger to her, but not a stranger. She nestled into his embrace and cried.

In conversation with John Hackett ...

Whilst John Hackett is probably best known for his work with his brother Steve Hackett (former Genesis guitarist), there is no shortage of other high profile artists with whom John has worked, and in addition he has also enjoyed a relatively successful solo career as a Flautist, guitarist, singer and composer.

John collaborated with Steve on his early albums, “Voyage of the Acolyte” and “Please Don’t Touch” , which led to further recordings and tours of the UK, USA and Europe playing flute, guitar and bass pedals in Steve’s live band ; also extensive tours of Japan and the USA as part of the Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio. Inbetween touring, back home in the UK, you will find a variety of incredible projects which John has been involved in ; as a composer of flute music for relaxation, he has recorded a number of solo and duo albums, plus several albums with Clive Williamson and the ambient group “Symbiosis” which has led to commissions for the BBC. John has performed concerts with international organist Marco Lo Muscio and performs regularly in a duo with classical guitar virtuoso Nick Fletcher with whom he has recorded two albums: “Overnight Snow” and “Hills of Andalucia”. 2005 saw a change of direction with John releasing, to critical acclaim, a rock album of his own songs called “Checking Out of London”, the lyrics for which were written by Nick Clabburn ; An experimental flute/dance album - “Red Planet Rhythm”- with Moodi Drury followed, and then another album of John’s compositions for flute and guitar - “Prelude to Summer”- which featured brother Steve, and Chris Glassfield. It was 10 years before John released his next solo album “Another Life”, in 2015 - which was essentially the rock follow up to “Checking Out ...” with Nick Clabburn once again providing the lyrics. Thankfully we haven’t had to wait just as long for something else new! It’s September 2017 as I write, and I have just been handed the very first John Hackett Band album in which we see another avenue open up, on the musical map of John Hackett! For this album, John has gone beyond his usual boundary and written the lyrics, as well as the music - and it’s really very good! John is joined by Nick Fletcher on guitar, drummer Duncan Parsons, and bass player Jeremy Richardson - who contribute their own compositions to the album, which presents us with a deluxe 2 CD album containing the new collaborative studio recording - “We Are Not Alone” - and a live recording - “Another Live” - of their 2016 Classic Rock Society gig. We were incredibly lucky to grab a rare chance to catch up with John about the latest release, and find out a little bit about how he arrived at this current stop on his musical journey ...

HR : I read an interview that you did some time ago, in which you describe your creative self as a bit like “Jekyll and Hyde” - in the sense that despite your focus on the classical side of music, you’ve always hung on to your inner rocker - is that still the case? “We Are Not Alone” sounds to me like you’ve found the balance...

Johh Hackett : I think you have gone straight to the heart of what I used to consider a problem … I started out from the age of 12 playing blues guitar, listening to all those amazing guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimi Hendrix. Then after hearing Ian McDonald play flute with King Crimson I started flute lessons and learned the classical repertoire. I used to think that one day I would have to choose between the two worlds but actually I now see that they can feed off each other. It is like light and shade. If you have played electric guitar you know how powerful a sound it can be. So that influences my flute playing - I don’t like it to sound weak.

On the new album there is a track called “Blue skies of Marazion” which features guitar and alto flute. It has quite an impressionistic vibe. It is then followed by “Summer Lightning” which starts as a ballad but then Nick’s electric guitar takes it to a much heavier place. It is quite a contrast, and good of you to say that I have found a balance. I have Nick to thank for pushing me to include more flute on this rock album than my previous two.

HR : I’m glad he pushed you to, because it does work! Do you have a preference when writing and performing? Are you more comfortable with classical or rock ; with vocal tracks or instrumentals?

JH : There is no question that having spent most of my life whizzing up and down scales and doing all the daily technical exercises you have to do if you want to play the difficult classical repertoire, I have in the past been more comfortable with the flute. But there is nothing as exciting as being on stage with a rock band. I have never forgotten the buzz I got from my first ever rock gig with my brother’s band in Oslo in 1978. I took a conscious decision some years back to devote much more time to rock, improving my keyboard playing and learning to sing - I say learning to sing as it has been a painful process (both for me and my poor family who have had to put up with all the shrieking and wailing, not just when I am looking at my bank statements …). In all honesty I enjoy all of it, though at 62 it seems ridiculously late in life to be finding your feet. But having spent a good 90 per cent of my working life playing flute, it is frankly liberating and great fun to be starting a second career as a singer/songwriter with my own band.

HR : Well age is just a number, and I think if you’re creative you strive eternally to cover new ground ... which of course for you just now, is The John Hackett band. You’re essentially a quartet and all 4 of you write your own material; correct me if I’m wrong but none of the songs appear to have been written together for the recording - so who decided what was going to be included? Were any of the pieces written specifically for the album?

JH : The strength of the album is that, with only a couple of exceptions, we had performed all the pieces live before recording them. The way it worked is that we would bring suggestions to the rehearsal room and the band would try them out. As everyone in the band has considerable experience writing and recording this inevitably meant bringing fairly complete compositions. It was soon obvious if a new piece could slot into our current live set or if best kept for a solo project. With “Never Gonna Make A Dime” for example I had written this as a fairly slow song. I didn’t think it was particularly good. I played it to the guys in a simple piano and vocal arrangement and within a few minutes, like in some cheesy movie, they were rocking it up. It soon became a no-brainer for inclusion in our shows and the album.

“Castles” was a song I had written some time ago and similarly didn’t think it was anything special. I imagined it as a blues number with the kind of energy of that John Mayall’s “Bluesbreakers” album with the young fiery Eric Clapton reading the Beano on the front cover. I had recorded a demo with me playing the guitar solo on a Les Paul I had borrowed from my brother Steve. But when we tried it as a band with Nick playing a blistering guitar solo it was exactly as I had wanted it to sound. So unfortunately there is a sad end to the story –I didn’t get to play the solo, and Steve asked for his Les Paul back!

Similarly Duncan’s piece “Queenie and Elmo’s Perfect Day” was a flute melody I had always liked and wanted to record. So when we got the band together it fitted in perfectly, especially as it gave the band free reign for improvisation.

“Take Control”, the opening track, I wrote specifically for the band and the album. I wanted something that would go through a number of changes . It is really in two parts the lyric being the link so there is plenty of scope for time signature changes, guitar solos and changes of texture ...

HR : It does have that, in fact the whole album is quite eclectic, which is what I love about it. It crosses genres and has a good balance of vocal and instrumental tracks. 2 out of 3 of the instrumental numbers were written by guitarist Nick Fletcher ; the 3rd in collaboration with yourself - how did you two meet and subsequently begin performing and writing together? He’s quite phenomenal ...

JH : I first heard Nick playing solo classical guitar without the aid of a microphone or Marshall stack in the fantastic acoustics of Sheffield Cathedral . I thought his playing was absolutely wonderful and wondered that day, as you do, if we might ever work together. Like myself, Nick started out in rock, then studied classical guitar so maybe I heard a kindred spirit. We did some concerts together as a guitar and flute duo, but it wasn’t until the release of my previous album “Another Life” that I found out what a fabulous electric player he is. I had decided to play some of the songs solo at the album launch with just me singing and playing piano but as it got closer to the time I wasn’t so sure if I could make it work. Anthony Phillips had played on one track of the album called “Satellite”. I knew he was going to be there that night so I felt a little nervous ... Nick was round at my house, I played him a few songs, he picked up a Stratocaster and suddenly it was so much easier. Duncan joined us on percussion, so we performed as a trio for the launch. And then it was simply, “Well, where’s the bass player? We could form a band!” Duncan immediately suggested his old school friend Jeremy. So that’s how we all got together - quite by accident really.

HR : The song “Jericho”, which was written by Jeremy Richardson, changes the vibe of the album a little - given that you sing lead vocal on the other 4 tracks, why didn’t you sing this one too?

JH : Yes “Jericho” was written by Jeremy and sung by him, with Duncan, as part of our live set. It really suits his voice so there was never any question who would sing the lead vocal on the album. On stage Jeremy and I take a fairly equal share of the vocals which comes over particularly on the second CD (it is a double album package) “Another Live” recorded live at the Classic Rock Society in Maltby in 2016. He is a terrific singer with a harder edge to his voice when he needs it, which contrasts well with my sound.

HR : The second track on the album interested me too ; “Never Gonna Make A Dime” tells of your family’s move to Canada - you must only have been a baby at the time, but do you remember it at all? What prompted you to pen the song?

JH : The song is based on our short stay in Canada in 1957. I was only 2 years old so unfortunately I cannot remember it but Steve was 7 and has good memories of our time there. Our dad had gone on ahead to Vancouver to find work while mum, her sister Betty, Steve and I followed by ship. Our mother missed London so much that after just 4 months we came back to London. I have always admired them for taking the risk of going in the first place and then having the courage to return.

HR : Sure, it’s big life stuff! The track features Steve on Harmonica - which isn’t the first instrument that most people would associate with him ... JH : Ah well , Steve used to disappear for long periods on board ship only to return with loads of cash. My mother asked him what on earth was going on - apparently he had been playing his harmonica to the crew and they had dug into their pockets for him. This must have given him an early taste for the music business. HR : Clearly! Haha. You’re both multi-instrumentalists - were your parents musical at all? Who / what inspired you become musicians?

JH : It was our dad Peter Hackett who sparked our interest in music. We came back from Canada while dad stayed on for a while to work. He arrived back with an enormous black box which looked more like a coffin but actually contained a guitar. He had played bugle as a boy, then clarinet, and harmonica - though his main interest was painting. Mum didn’t play anything but always showed a great love of music. She is 87 now and still comes to our rock concerts. Steve and I have been blessed to have parents who have always supported us in our music careers.

HR : And your careers have seen you spend quite a great deal of time together over the years. It seems to be the way with brothers in bands together, that it inevitably results in some sort of falling out, and attracts an ensuing media circus! I thankfully don’t see much evidence of that with yourself and Steve - onstage, or offstage - is there a secret to getting on?

JH : Steve in his role as the older brother has always been kind enough to include me. I used to sit in on rehearsals with his first recording band ‘Quiet World’ ; I was there when he did his audition for Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks at our little flat in London - I even got to play a bit of flute for them that day. I don’t think there has ever been any rivalry between us. I took the decision in my teens to concentrate on the flute, which has taken me in a different direction from him. So although we do work together from time to time, we are mostly involved in our own projects - But when we do get together inevitably we talk music, with all the enthusiasm as when we shared a bedroom as teenagers!

HR : You’re taking the JHB on the road with a handful of shows coming up - do you enjoy playing the more intimate venues?

JH : We currently have dates every few weeks for up until this time next year. Certainly regarding venues it is always much nicer to play places where you can talk to the audience after. Their enthusiasm is what it is all about.

HR : What’s your most memorable show to date?

The most memorable gig is perhaps the one for the Classic Rock Society captured on our live CD. It was only about the fourth gig we had done as a band and it felt great that we were being taken seriously by the Society who have always championed new progressive music. More importantly it was the last John Hackett Band gig our friend Steph Kennedy was able to come to - she travelled all over the country with the help of husband Dave and brother-in-law Glen in her final year. A humble reminder in this sometimes brutal world of how music can bring us together.

HR : Absolutely ... And if you could bring together anyone, living or deceased, to perform with you on stage - a dream line-up - who would it be?

JH : If we were talking football I would probably start with Pavarotti in goal.

Of course, I would have to say my current band - But I wouldn’t mind having J.S. Bach on keyboards as long as he didn’t get any powder from his wig on my synths!

Destination Wedding: The Wild, Wild West

The western United States offers tons of glorious locations at which to host your destination wedding.

There are so many! And you know us … at Invitations by R Squared, we love LOVE, and we LOVE weddings!

After a very interesting discussion with our associate, Maya Ruby, about hosting a destination wedding in Yosemite Park, we felt we needed to look at the west again. Sure, we’ve talked a lot about planning a destination wedding out west – look here and here – but we haven’t looked hard at an often-overlooked resource – our National Parks.

National parks will require a special use permit for a destination wedding. Fees will vary on this, and the reason seems to be tied to the popularity of your choice of location.

There are so many western National Park locations just perfect for a destination wedding, that we found it really hard to choose our favorites.

Yosemite, California – Our #1 Favorite – Whether you envision vows in a grassy meadow, a waterfall fete or a winter-white wedding that takes advantage of the ice-skating rink, the home of Half Dome has a wide variety of spaces. It also boasts several indoor venues, including a wooden chapel and The Ahwahnee, a 1927 luxury lodge with Arts and Crafts touches.

The only issue: This sought-after park is often booked more than a year in advance.

As is true at all national parks, a special use permit is required for any destination wedding or commitment ceremony held at any location within Yosemite National Park. The permit cost for Yosemite is $150.

Destination weddings or ceremonies may be scheduled in any National Park up to one year in advance and more than 21 days prior to your event.

You can take a look at, download and complete the application to hold your event in Yosemite here. When completing any application for a national park destination wedding, be sure to include any special needs of your party (e.g., access for persons with disabilities, elderly guests, etc.).

Yosemite Park offers a list of ceremony sites within the park. If you are sending in your application for a Yosemite destination wedding, you will need to specify a site. You can find the list of ceremony locations right here.

The park service will review your application for a destination wedding. Once approved, your Special Use Permit will be prepared and mailed to you for signature. Upon receipt, please review, sign and return the permit to the specific park service office for final approval. After the permit is approved, the park service will send you an authorized copy.

The approved permit must be in your possession at the time of the ceremony.

Entrance fees into the park are not waived for either ceremony participants or guests.

Close by to Yosemite Park, you’ll find the Tenaya Lodge. Hold your actual destination wedding ceremony in the park at one of a number locations, and schedule your accommodations, welcome party, and reception at the Tenaya!

Their Lodge Rooms offer the refined details destination wedding couples, and their guests, would expect in a Four-Diamond Yosemite resort — deluxe baths, plush bedding, flat-screen TVs, mountain charm and access to limitless recreation.

The pinnacle of Yosemite luxury lodging, Tenaya Lodge’s spacious suites – perfect for a destination wedding night or honeymoon stay – with custom in-room amenities complement the alpine grandeur that surrounds the resort.

For those couples seeking a private and hidden getaway, the Tenaya has just the ticket! Nestled among towering Sugar Pines and Incense Cedars of the Sierra National Forest, the Cottages at Tenaya Lodge provide a unique, secluded escape. Cottage Rooms offer private outdoor sitting areas, fireplaces and rustic charm among the evergreens with easy access to the main lodge.

Say “I do!” at the fifth-oldest national park, Crater Lake,

where several promontories along the volcanic rim overlook the very blue, very deep namesake lake and its forested islands.

Keep in mind that this area averages 44 feet of snow a year (it’s often still blanketed come spring) and has no indoor destination wedding facilities.

Groups can overnight and dine in the 71-room Crater Lake Lodge between May and October. Built in 1915, it’s full of old-timey charm — stone facades, a crackling lobby fire and no TVs.

Olympic, Washington – This is a delightful location for any adventurous destination wedding couple.

At this diverse park, covering nearly 1 million acres of the Olympic Peninsula, you can explore tide pools at the ocean, chase waterfalls on a rainforest hike, and climb a legit mountain in the same trip.

Lodging varies from Spartan campgrounds to warmly appointed lakeside resorts. Lake Crescent Lodge’s westerly view over clear glacial waters makes for exceptional sunset unions. Lake Quinault Lodge features a gazebo on a manicured lawn and a ballroom with cathedral ceilings.

Bonus: Both lodges are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Warmly thought of as the Switzerland of North America, Glacier National Park is snuggled against the Canadian border.

Tie the knot in a tree-lined outdoor amphitheater like Rising Sun, Avalanche Creek or Many Glacier, or opt for the pebbly shore of Medicine Lake.

Stay at the circa-1913 Lake McDonald Lodge, where trademark retro red buses congregate, making for a stellar photo op.

Grand Canyon, Arizona – This is one for the destination wedding books!

Grand Canyon National Park offers a variety of indoor and outdoor locations for destination wedding ceremonies and receptions. To be married in the park, obtain an Arizona marriage license, acquire a Special Use Permit from the park, and arrange a Justice of the Peace, Municipal Judge, or an ordained clergyperson to perform the ceremony.

If you are not bringing along your own officiant, there are several churches in the area whom you can contact for your destination wedding. Clergy from Grand Canyon Village will often perform wedding ceremonies, however, counseling prior to the wedding may be required. Favored ceremony spots (Shoshone Point, Grandeur Point) at this gorgeous natural wonder are isolated and rustic, or require short hikes.

Retreat to the Thunderbird Lodge (picture a fireplace and a balcony overlooking the Colorado River and South Rim) for your reception, but retire to El Tovar, a throwback to the golden age of railroad travel.

Zion, Utah – Possibly our second favorite location! The beauty of Zion Park in Utah is truly unbelievable. Desert meets forest in this peaceful preserve of vertical walls, sandstone plateaus, crimson rock formations, vivid wildflowers and curious wild turkeys, ready and willing to crash your destination wedding and photo bomb at every opportunity!

Zion National Park in Utah is one of the most unique places for a Destination Wedding.

Couples travel from all over the world to be amazed by towering sandstone cliffs of Zion and enjoy the charming town of Springdale which lies at its entrance. We are always in awe of magnificent natural spaces for hosting a destination wedding, and the cliffs and canyons of Zion National Park pretty much leave all other locations in the dust.

There are few wedding destinations more beautiful in the world. Wedding guests who travel to Zion for the first time are always blown away by its absolute beauty and vastness. Over the years, Zion has become a perfect destination for adventurous couples for many reasons.

The giant sandstone cliffs and canyons are known by nature lovers around the world.

Cottonwood trees line the Virgin river cutting through the sandstone behemoths. There are many locations both in and outside of the park where you can hold your wedding.

One of the best parts of planning a wedding at Zion National Park is its accessibility from anywhere in the world. Zion is only about two hours from Las Vegas and its international airport and little more than 45 minutes from St George and its Airport. There are many lodging choices in Springdale, Rockville, and Hurricane, not to mention the lodge inside of Zion National Park.

Co-opt shuttles for eco-friendly transportation to six outdoorsy sites like the campground amphitheater or Temple of Sinawava, which has a river beach.

Zion Lodge catering can whip up a brunch buffet after a sunrise ceremony, as well as provide accommodations for your party, and help you plan some super fun activities in the area.

Grand Teton, Wyoming – This peak-filled playground provides group activities aplenty, from Elk Island cruises to whitewater rafting. Jenny Lake Lodge begs for a welcome party, while two chapels vie for your vows. Up to 600 guests can mingle under the antler chandeliers at Jackson LakeLodge.
