so, instead of working on what i actually wanted to work on ... i did some rough mock up and UI stuff for the pixel game i dream of making

(some sprites are done and copied over, like the basic player character- most are super rough -throw some color in vageuly the shape you need -)

my dream idea (probably impossible espeiclaly for a noob gamedev like me lol) is like a mix of minecraft and stardew with a bit of botw and ww, but set in my OCs world- with a heavy focus on customization and environment/exploration more than making money or something (you might collect celestial silver bits- which are toxic to demons and thus better collected by you in an effort to heal their world and you get rewards for turning it in?)

the Hud? UI? you see here is well .. health and energy in the upper left corner plus some controls which are also in the upper right corner, the idea is to mimic windwakers style of button mapping- meaning that you can put any item on any button you want (only inventory is locked bc it contains all the options)- that extends to the jump, interact and sit actions too, theyd be in your inventory like an item you get from the start, so if you never wanna sit down, put sth else there, dont want to interact with anything and just run around? sure do, never jump? no problem

in the lower right corner is the info thingy, with the big wheel being time of day, the second the health of the environment (the main mechanic in restricting you- if you cut down trees or introduce plants from other, later unlockable, areas it will go down, if you reach critical level too many times Eadrya (blue rough sprite there) will show up whereever you are and kill you (bc the whole idea is that you are a demon hunter who wanted to leave the organization but was hunted down by them for it- so you are rescued by Shargon and put into one of the bubbles around travel gates meant to protect humans from the otherwise toxic-to-humans atmosphere in the demon world, but since you are a hunter, and they cant be sure you can be trusted, you are tasked with helping their world recover from the damage your former allies caused- so if you do more damage than heal it and you do it on purpose they will see it as proof you have not actually left the hunters, which means if Eadrya is the one watching the area you will be eaten/smashed/etc- if its someone else thrown back into the human realm)

below that is the temperature- and on the side is the current and coming weather

(edit: as sidenote, i always got a color filter layer ready for grayscale to check if everythings still readable without color- its an effort to make it more accessible for people with color vision impairment, but i dont think i can test for every single one? theres alot of levels of color blindness right? >o<)

what gets me about the loz series is how it is insanely ripe for subversion. so much of the series feels like its building up for a plot twist, for an internal deconstruction, to tell us that everything was a lie that is now being torn down. but the final twist never comes, and thats felt the most painfully in totk, the game that is the number one most built for subversion, and arguable the game that subverts itself the least.

it also celebrates the empire of hyrule and zelda place as a ruler and link's role of hero to a degree that hasn't really been felt before, ocarina of time and twilight princess and the windwaker all hold varying levels of suspicion and melancholy to those systems of power, the wind waker going as far as to let the old hyrule be washed away. even skyward sword which celebrates the creation of the later questionable kingdom has an edge of hesitance with demise declaring his curse, regardless of how literally you interpret the curse itself, it holds a thematic weight of referencing the future suffering that occurs within the kingdom they build, of the cycle of war and violence and fate etc. totk almost seems to actively fights against any criticism of those things.

totk ends up feeling almost tired, botw sets up the beginning of a new era for zelda, both a return to its roots and a new direction. i feel like a lot of people were feeling like we were gearing up for a great grand plot twist, to have all those old referenced games dug up and recontextualized. and then it just, doesn't do that. there is no plot twist, everything is played straight, nothing changes.

no matter how much loz reinvents itself, it remains the same as it ever was. the cycle continues, forever.

the sense of incoming deconstruction comes from the fact that ideas of fate and the divine right of kings and such are inherently unsustainable ideas! a clever person may notice that and assume that the unsustainability and the doubt are purposeful elements. unfortunately, the creators do not treat those ideas as unsustainable, both for cynical moneymaking reasons and for reasons of genre convention. while breath of the wild and other games, as mentioned, put forward some doubt on the idea of fate, the series fundamentally cannot deconstruct itself. to do so would be to make its internal engine fall apart.

ultimately, loz is a conservative series. both in terms of its actual politics and what it's willing to do artistically. it cannot push the envelope too far because that would make it lose its mass appeal. acknowledging the negative aspects of fate and the divine monarchy or what the fuck ever is honestly part of its appeal. you can have a greater nuance of writing acknowledging that those are a shackle on the characters and series. but, in the same breath, you reaffirm them as integral to the world and therefore good. zelda struggles with failing as princess, but in the end, she becomes the barrier maiden she was always meant to be. link's issues as a hero molded him into silence, but his silence is a necessary part of his projectability as a player character. at the end of the day, the formula remains as it ever was lol. totk just did away with the nuance because the writers didn't feel like making it more than a cash grab. it's not going to ever deconstruct itself no matter how much you wish it would.

Been casually following your stuff for a while, but I only just now went through your blog for real. So since I know you also have major Ganondorf brainrot, any particular takes on him and his philosophy in TP?

I haven't played Twilight Princess in a thousand years, unfortunately, and apparently I never bought it?? So I've got a lot more hours logged in OoT and Windwaker. I did however snag myself a treat on ebay so I may have more thoughts about this in the coming weeks.

That said, I do remember that he was the first Ganondorf that made me and the friend who I originally started doing Zelda comics with think about Ganondorf more critically as a trickster and not a tank (I was too young to really be considerate of Wind Waker when it first came out, but I was 16 when TP dropped and we were already having fun playing in the zelda sandbox. I remember really hating his design in TP, so I must've already been knee-deep in my OoT shit lol)

Idk if it's necessarily what you asked but I think I recall that his dynamic with Zant and his literally possessing Zelda really changed my perspective on him as a magic user (even though he is still pretty hands-off in OoT, we had SSB: Melee by then and if you know you know) and probably spurred the idea that the Gerudo stones in the OoT dungeons could be read as Ganondorf setting those traps up.

His monologue and death scenes are also some of what formed my headcanons about his very calm demeanor masking this bitterness and stubbornness and being inclined to succumb to his anger and grief (because what is left for him here? He's already lost everything, and all that remains is revenge). I also really liked that in OoT his beast form is a result of him losing control of the triforce, and in TP he can switch back and forth, which implied to me that that anger and grief is controlled and terrifying and precise, which is just such an excellent fucking flavor of villainy. Twilight Princess said, "Remember Ganondorf? He's older and wiser (this is a threat)."

Anyway that's all I can think of off the top of my head -- but I'll be thrilled to report back if/when I'm able to replay the game soonish!

Also....This is not what you asked but I have a very fond memory of watching my friend (who was a Link stan) play TP and commenting in-character as he played through, and every time he died I would laugh and say 'Try Again!' in Thee Dumbest Old Man Voice a 16 year old can conjure, and we ended up basing their entire dynamic for our comic on it, haha.

im not much of a gamer at all. i grew up not being able to afford consoles, but my best friend had a gamecube and her favorite game was wind waker, so it was literally the only game i ever played for a very long time. but i loved the lore of windwaker, the fantasy and the princesses and gods, and i pretended link was secretly a girl the whole time and no one knew that he wasn't a 'real boy' (classic egg things), and i was into manga, so i begged my ma to get me one of the loz manga and fell in love with the series' lore even more. i still have my copy of minish cap's manga, the first manga i ever read!

i suck at gaming- I'll be the first to admit that im not very good at puzzle games, and even worse at combat, and now with my hand tremors i cant play most controllers. it takes me ages to finish games, and I've basically only finished ds/3ds ones bc it's easiest to steady my hands on those. that means that it's harder to get into new games since i rely on other people playing them. watching let's plays stresses me out, im constantly on edge for slurs and shitty remarks, so i tend not to watch those, and w the ADHD, silent playthroughs are a no-go. at least with zelda, i know every game forward and back in my sleep, so it's just easier to enjoy myself while failing to play them than if i start new games, ya know? still, i WILL finish skyward sword one day, tremors be damned!!!!

im honestly not sure why i latched so strongly onto loz. it's been a capital S special interest since i was at least 6 and I've never fallen out of it, ever, it's on my mind 25/7. it was the first fandom i wrote fic for before even knowing fic EXISTED, and I've devoted far too much time to it. it is a very problematic franchise-- Nintendo is a shit company, the main villain is racist, the gerudo on their own even more so, there's so much Orientalism, it's just. awful. but i keep coming back to it. i try to be very critical and not enjoy it blindly, but it really is one of the few things that kept me happy when i was suicidal and fucked up as a teen. as cheesy as it is to say, link saved my little egg life

I'm replaying Windwaker right now. I have so many lovely memories with this game. It pretty much molded my brain and art style.

This game was my childhood fixation. I played Windwaker inside and out. I even had a specific layout for how I got things and when I would get them (rupees, maps, extra arrows, etc). It's an amazing game and I honestly could argue that we wouldn't have BOTW or all the amazing Zelda games if it wasn't for this silly ocean game. It established so much and is one of the only Zelda games that accurately represents a 12 year old, and I appreciate that. Good game. 10/10

(it was also the most criticized game since the Zelda team decided to change the style mid way through production, and I'm forever grateful for their silliness. They really proved everyone wrong. Also, it was nice having a style change since we got Twilight Princess later)

This is probably a hot take, but you know how folks think it makes NO sense for the Zora in Windwaker to have evolved into the Rito? I am here to counter that lol. Evolution is only change over time, right? And I hear you; if the world is mostly ocean now, why wouldn't they just stay in the ocean??? Competition for food and resources.

Think about it. Why did whales, creatures who originally evolved from water-dwellers into land-dwellers, revert back to the water? If there is too much competition in your habitat for resources, you are either going to get better at surviving, or find somewhere else to hunt/forage. It is like this for the Zora/Rito, I think. There was too much competition in the waters now that everything that remained got much better at surviving down there, so they were forced inland. Over time, the Rito that had mutations that made land-life easier would have had higher chances of survival and reproduction, ensuring THOSE genes got passed down again and again until they were suited for flight. The ONLY potential problem with this, is the matter of time. Evolution often takes maybe a million generations or more to have this drastic of a change, but Windwaker supposedly only takes place 100 years after Ocarina. There have been instances of evolution occurring within an observable lifespan, but it is bacteria; something that is a much simpler organism than something in the Eukaryote domain. I doubt the devs really thought hard about that, seeing as not a majority of folks really study evolution beyond the basic definition you might* get in grade school. We also have the whole fantastical/magical aspect of the universe here, so there is definitely a way for that to have played a part. I'm just saying, if Ocarina were reasonably far enough in the past, it makes sense for the Zora to have become the Rito. Yes, I am absolutely ignoring their co-existence in BotW/TotK because that's just it's own thing and I hate the Timeline shenanigans anyway lol. AU's are allowed, they are fine, I promise. Anyway, was just listening to a playthrough of the Windwaker whilst I was working today and had to pause and think more critically about it after what I learned in school last year. Man, I really should go back for a biology degree or some shit. Just some fun thoughts to mix with a cool game. *Some places are so hostile to the concept of evolution because it directly contradicts creationism that it is discouraged or outright banned so. Your mileage may vary.

Super Power Name: Tempest Ballad

Super Power Description: the Owner of this Power is able to increase the strength of their attacks if they follow a basic sequence of notes in a satisfying way. The louder and more correct sounding the melody they make, the stronger they grow.

Super Power Pros: this Power is one of the easiest for newly graduated PowerOwners to learn and use in the field. With music being such an ingrained part of our society, even simple humming will allow someone to punch with a few more than natural pounds, or jump a couple feet higher than usual. If the owner increases in volume—or even better, uses an instrument—their power skyrockets, putting them above basic ability enhancing Powers.

Super Power Cons: while this power is easy to figure out on a basic level, it still has its difficulties. Before we even get to the problems the power has, there are the basic laws of Music Theory that one has to grasp and understand. If an untrained civilian gained Ownership of this Power, they may be able to get a few seconds of strength here and there, maybe be able to punch like a bear once. But without training to know how to string notes together, and having the lung capacity for extended fights, the Owner wouldn’t be any better.

Now for the problems of the Power; keeping the melody flowing is critical. If the Owner so much as goes down a key in a way that disrupts the flow, they can lose all the enhancements they have gained until then. Another issue is that the abilities of the Owner are constantly rising while the Power is in effect. While this sounds good in theory, it means having to constantly adjust to a new body every few seconds in reality. New PowerOwners don’t see this problem too much in their first year, as their fights tend to be no longer than 30 minutes. When it gets into the long hours of the fight, it becomes a whole new battle.

TV Show Ask Game

3) have you ever quit a show before it finished? why?

ouat.  because i was upset that they broke up my canon happy ending ship from ouat:iw for no reason just to throw the popular guy into the main show and have him fake date belle while she was pissed at rumple and then didn’t address why he was there or do other stuff with him after that.  and then the writing was just really bad and i stopped caring.  (probably would’ve stopped before s4 except they brought in elizabeth mitchell and mmmmmmmm i really like her.)

also naruto.  although i’m not sure if that counts because i quit somewhere during all the filler arcs before shippuden.  and i quit.  because of the filler arcs.  (there was almost an entire season of yu-gi-oh that i skipped because it was filler.  and i think i missed most of the last season, but i think i went back for the finale.)i stopped about halfway through wonderfalls because she got together with the guy and it felt like it was going to go into super shipping territory and i wasn’t about that life (and then apparently i’ve heard that it didn’t because i think she helps him get back with his wife? or something? like that? idk?? i haven’t seen it, obviously.  XD).

–obviously i have done this multiple times, particularly with long-running shows.  (i feel like i should include pokemon, too, but that had more to do with conflicting times between it and digimon, i think, which i enjoyed significantly more.) i don’t really watch shows all the way through and stick with them, so the shows i have done that with are probably a bigger deal than the ones i haven’t.

5) what’s your comfort show?

my little pony: friendship is magic.  don’t judge me.but, like, it started out as a comfort show because my ex and i had gotten into a HUGE fight and one of my roommates had been kind of involved (long story) and that was basically the fight that finalized for me the end of the relationship and my other roommate was like okay, we’re going to sit down and watch ponies and you will fall in love with luna and you will feel better and she was right.  luna is best pony.i’ve used other shows that way, too, but mlp:fim is my go-to when i’m in a depressive period.

7) have you ever been inspired to start a new show based on gifs or memes it has produced?

jane the virgin.  i mean, there’s a combination of influences that led to that, but the main final bit were those gif sets that nessie reblogged of luisa and rose and tagged for rhea and ivy.  because no one told me when they were trying to get me to watch it that there were lesbians.the only other one i could think of was symphogear, but i think that was more because i made a friend who wrote one of the main characters and less to do with the actual gifs.

12) have you ever watched a show just for a specific actor? did you enjoy it?

the fall. for gillian anderson (and jamie dornan because with his beard he’s actually not bad to look at).  and yeah, i enjoyed it.  the katie stuff in s2 was b a d, but other than that, yeah, i really enjoyed it!american gods i didn’t see all of, but i mostly saw it for gillian anderson to especially the episode she and kristin chenoweth were in together i really just saw it for that episode it was a great episode.i’ve been debating watching agent carter for bridget regan, and i definitely saw the tick for yara martinez.  i loved the tick and look forward to s2.oh and i saw ally mcbeal for calista because cat grant is great and ally mcbeal was great.and then i saw swingtown for lana parilla and i had to get past the first two episodes and also i was seeing it with jae but swingtown is also great.i started wonderfalls for caroline dhavernas (alana bloom in hannibal, if that helps) and i own it but i didn’t finish it.  i should add that one up above, actually.  i heard jewel straite shows up in the last few episodes, though, so.  might go back to that.  eventually.  maybe.

i may have gotten super excited about big little lies because nicole kidman and reese witherspoon and it was totally worth they hype and it was really good and it can be triggering but it was SO good.–might stop there because this list could maybe get really long.  but it’s a thing where in most cases i’ve actually enjoyed what i went back to see.  i’m sure there are examples where things didn’t live up to hype with things i watched primarily for actors?  but?  i can’t think of any tv shows where that happened.  maybe glee because idina menzel but i also started seeing that because the girl i had a crush on was super into it so.

19) are there any shows on your “to watch” list right now?

doctor who (which i’ve started and got distracted from finishing), legends of tomorrow (but skip s1, right?), a series of unfortunate events (which dad and i started but then we’re rarely in a place to see shows at the same time so now he’s on a doctor who marathon and i’ve been catching up on supergirl - but i’m hoping to jump in on his doctor who marathon when he gets back to where he left me the first time), merlin (because katie mcgrath duh), the kominsky method (which i’ve seen bits of and liked), person of interest (BECAUSE LESBIANS AND ALSO JIM CAVIEZEL), gurren lagann (which i’ve started and haven’t finished), jessica jones - and there’s other stuff, like, i have a long list on netflix and i think there’s stuff i’m not thinking of, but those are the ones that stand out.

OH KILLING EVE.  KILLING EVE IS ON THAT LIST.  AND WESTWORLD (which i’ve seen bits and pieces of while dad was binging the first season after we got it for him for Christmas).

25) do you prefer proper opening credits, or a simple title card?

opening credits.  give me a catchy theme song i can sing with and that will make me think of the show when i hear it.  give me a theme song that’s cool and then release it so that i can buy it.

“This isn’t you, Lena. This isn’t the woman who saved me. What happened to you??” (Sam talks sense into Lena please)

Sam’s memories of her time as Reign are… fuzzy. She doesn’t fully recall what Lena did to help split the two of them, and she only remembers flashes of her time with Lena in the L-Corp labs. What she does remember clearly, though, is that Lena saved her.

Which is why she doesn’t understand what the hell happened to her.

Lena has just finished explaining her whole plan to Sam, and she’s looking at her eagerly like she thinks Sam will approve of it, like she thinks Sam will agree with her, and Sam feels vaguely sick. How could Lena have become this? How could she ever think what she’s doing is alright?

“So?” Lena asks. “What do you think?”

Sam shakes her head slowly, resisting the urge to back up as she does so. “This isn’t you, Lena. This isn’t the woman who saved me. What happened to you?”

Lena’s face goes stony. “I should have known,” she says grimly. “Everyone always betrays me. Of course you’d be no different.”

“How am I betraying you?” Sam demands. “Lena, I want to help you. I can tell you’re hurting. And I know it feels like what you’re doing will stop that hurt, but it won’t, and I think you know that. Please, don’t let the pain inside you turn you into something you’re not.”

Lena looks away, not meeting Sam’s gaze. “Are you saying I’m wrong to feel this way?”

“You can feel however you want to feel,” Sam replies. “No one should tell you otherwise. But don’t take it out on other people. Don’t hurt people because you’re hurting.”

Lena jerks upright. “I’m not hurting-”

“You know you are,” Sam interrupts gently. “Manipulating people’s minds, even with the best of intentions, is hurting people. Think of how you’d feel if someone did it to you.”

Lena finally turns towards Sam, and Sam can see that she’s close to tears. “I just want people to stop hurting each other.”

“I know you do,” Sam says, “but the only person you can control is yourself. All you can do is keep yourself from hurting people and hope that other people follow suit.”

“And if they don’t?”

Sam sighs. “Everyone makes their own choices, Lena. You can’t change that.”

“I could,” Lena replies, looking over at her lenses. “I could keep people from making bad choices. I could do it, Sam.”

“But should you?” Sam asks.

She hopes Lena knows the right answer, because if she doesn’t, then she may be too far gone for anyone to reach.

To Sam’s relief, Lena’s shoulders slump, and quietly, she admits, “No.”

“I know it’s hard,” Sam says, “but it’s the right choice.”

“I wish making the right choice didn’t hurt.”

Sam sighs and holds out her arms, and Lena folds into them, burying her face in the crook of Sam’s neck. Sam wants to comfort her, wants to say things will get easier, wants to say Lena won’t get hurt again, but she also knows that a lie, however well-meaning, is the last thing Lena needs right now, so she doesn’t say anything of those things. “I’ve got you,” she says instead, because she knows it’s true. “I’ve got you. I’ll always be here for you. Always.”

And, very quietly, she hears Lena mumble, “I know.”

Twin-zes for the send a character!

my babies!!!!!!! 

First impression: Astra: oh no another hot villain lady she’s already my favAlura: wow this lady who i have never heard of is crying and she’s making me want to cry thats some nice acting 

Impression now:both: the loves of my life!!! i would die for them!!!! i love them so much and they love each other so much and they’re both so important to kara’s story and so important to each other and im so glad they’re having a movie night with kara Right Now 

Favorite moment:Astra: oh thats a hard one she has so many good moments hmmm im torn between three! that part where she’s sitting in the cage and kara comes to speak to her and kara says everyone is worth faith and astra says she’s not but is still so proud of kara for who she is!!! the part where they exchange astra for j’onn and astra refuses to let non attack and looks so proud of kara!! the part on the roof where alex tells astra not to fight them because she clearly doesn’t want to and u can see the Emotion in astra’s face and she listens!!! i love her!!Alura: it breaks my heart but honestly, probably the moment where she sends kara away because even though she’s on the verge of tears she still smiles at kara as she gets into the pod because even though she’s losing her daughter and about to die and is probably terrified, she doesn’t want that to be kara’s last memory of her and it says so much about her.

Idea for a story: About the two of them oof i dont know how to narrow it down? but if we’re talking about a completely original idea i haven’t started focused on the twins i’d probably love to do something where they both escape krypton and raise kara together. on a lighter note, i’d like to do something involving cuddle therapy for them to reconnect but with some light hearted misunderstanding where alex has feelings for astra and thinks astra is already seeing someone surprise its just alura 

Unpopular opinion:astra isn’t a villain and saying so is a complete misunderstanding of her character. alura isn’t a bad mother/person for sending kara away to earth when it was literally the only thing she could to do to keep her alive at the time. the fact that she lied to kara about what happened to astra is not a betrayal but a sign of good parenting given the fact that kara was literally a child. krypton’s destruction wasn’t astra or alura’s fault, and neither could’ve saved it. 

Favorite relationship: hm honestly? each other. i love how much they love each other and how that’s still so obvious even when they’re on opposite sides because of what’s happening to krypton. i love how strong that love is, and how its stood all that loss they’ve been through and they’re now cuddling. 

Favorite headcanon:honestly a lot of what i think of as canon was created by the gd fandom so its hard to seperate the two but probably the idea that astra got her white streak to help baby kara tell the difference between her and alura cause its cute

Today is The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary and I can't help but think that after last week's Nintendo Direct, they are saying to celebrate give us $60 for a half-assed rerelease of a game that was critically panned when it was released...

I really wish they would have done like they did with Mario at least and maybe given us Twilight Princess and Windwaker on the cart as well. 🤷
