If I could rewrite the v3 ending I would scrap the whole "danganronpa is a real game in this universe" thing and instead it would be like: the characters were a bunch of talentless people who worshipped junko, and they implanted false memories and personalities into themselves and put themselves in a killing game. Cus they wanted to make another killing game, and the most despair inducing thing to do would be to do it to themselves. This way we can keep the existential horror of your entire life being made up, and the theme of "what defines truth and lies" while also getting rid of that stupid "you're fictional characters in a show" plot point

i like that idea. honestly, there's a million things they could have done with the plot of V3. i don't hate bits and pieces of it, but my current opinion (it may change) is that this was the most Boring Use of the twist/parts of Tsumugi's "story."

just off the top of my head, i'd rather have seen:

a DR game that doesn't seem like it's about SHSLs (their pregame selves) until halfway thru when it's revealed they're mindwiped SHSLs in hiding

as an addendum to the above, an actual Ultimate Hunt plot

the Gofer Project without any extraneous bits: it could still be an AU, but show us the potential "bad end" of Makoto restarting HPA in DR3. like, a Danganronpa 4 IF, essentially. it would have been about as Stupid but i think there could have been something Interesting to say there as an unofficial "what if"

Tsumugi's stupid reality show plot is real but the reveal is much earlier and the plot is much more about fighting Nihilism

a plot that takes place in this apparently insane world outside of the Killing Game where you can just project new identities onto people, it's legal to give folks Space COVID, and you can let them die for Entertainment (UDG-like spinoff, or, hell, not a DR game at all - could have been the next MDA/Rain Code)

a spinoff-type game in the world of DR with literally any of these characters' backstories? like? Rantaro, Kirumi, Kokichi, Korekiyo, they're all ripe as little bananas to just slot into HPA-arc post-DR3

if they really want to go the Reality Show route, go full meta with it early. it's not a reveal, it's fully known to the viewer from the start. you're the producer. everything is measured in Ratings and Engagement and Viewership. and you have to weigh that against the fact that these kids are in fact totally dying on you

etc etc

not all at once, of course, since some of these are Mutually Exclusive. but you get what i mean.

overall, my first impression (having just beat it a few days ago) is that the Moving Parts are not necessarily bad. a lot of them are really interesting, in fact! but they put them together in a way that doesn't really do much for me at the moment

Not really, I kinda lost contact with a majority of the ppl in it after the server died, plus I think a lot of them deactivated their Tumblrs a bit after. I did start talking with one of the ppl from it again over like a year ago, and we're friends on genshin, but I haven't talked to them for a while. It's my fault tho, I absolutely suck at keeping in contact with ppl, esp ones I only know online, cus I'll forget to respond or just won't be able to think of a response, and then the convo dies and I get too much anxiety trying to think of a way to start talking again cus my brain is dumb and overthinks literally everything :p

I did some mock up sprites for a Danganronpa AU @deceiving-haze (Haze), @nayt0reprince (Ree) and I (ahoyhoy!) discuss in our own time for fun! (unshaded, because shading would make them take muuuch longer and I might never finish!!) I’m gonna copy-paste this description onto all three of these LOL,,

We all have 6 characters each for the AU! So I’m almost halfway, as I’ve done 8/18 so far! (3/6 of Haze’s, 2/6 of Ree’s, and 3/6 of mine!) Please note that we have used pre-existing OCs for this AU, so the designs have been pre-established and unaltered for this AU!

I’m curious to the individual expulsions for the CU Danganronpa AU and how they reflect the kids. (I’d imagine the boys having their own ‘what if’ expulsions, but one involving both of them could be centered around separation which DID invoke a sort of special despair in the movie.)

Well the expulsions would require the theme of the kids’ special talent and twisting it so it becomes a source of humiliation and despair. Like with Melvin’s science convention gone haywire.

Here are some ideas for potential expulsions.

Haar Today, Gone Tomorrow: Jessica would be strapped to a barber chair with a group of robotic stylists ready to prep her hair. They each hold an exaggerated weapons like scissors, hair straighteners, curlers that they intend to use as their tool to mess with Jessica’s hair. They each take turns at the beehive as they cut/straighten/pull on her hair making it messier and uglier then what the client would prefer. It turns into a ridiculous mess with so many tangles, uneven ends and bald spots. To top it all off, one of the bots takes out a huge hairspray can and sprays Jessica’s haar and body. But it continues to spray to the point that Jessica ends up encased in a block of spray. Once the bot is finished, they shoot her out of the school and into the outside.

Diamond in the Rough: Bo is placed inside a small and tight room made entirely of rock. To his dismay, the room begins to cave in making it tighter to move around. Luckily he has his sculpting tools to chip away at the walls but his luck runs out when his tools start to break. Feeling scared and frustrated by his predicament, Bo ends up panicking and punches the wall with his bare fists. To his surprise, it works and the walls begin to break. He begins to punch more and more, even getting some kicks in there. Fueled by his frustration for giving into the motive and his anger for being stuck in this situation, Bo powers through the walls screaming all the way through. At last he makes it out of the walls. But he feels a shroud of guilt when he looks at his hands now bruised and scraped. He let his anger get the better of him and he really did become just muscle. As he passes out in sorrow, he’s placed inside a spherical diamond capsule and kicked out of the school. 

The Mako Mori Test: Erica finds herself in a large empty hall. And at the end of the hallway lies the door to the outside world! While armed with her plungers and a laser gun, a variety of monsters and enemies suddenly appear from different parts of the hall and proceed to attack her. Zombies, aliens, dinosaurs, robots you name it. Erica finds that she’s able to beat each of these monsters with relative ease. But as she reaches the end of the hall to the door, a part of the wall opens up to reveal George and Harold tied up and at the mercy of a giant television creature with cable like tentacles. And the door is starting to close! Realizng that she’s at an impasse, she decides to give up her chance of escape to save her friends from the monster’s clutches. But to her shock, they were actually dummies! And with Erica distracted, the monster unleashes an array of pink paintballs at her causing her to slip into a deep sleep. 

Separation Anxiety: The boys find themselves placed together in a detention themed classroom. A loud alarm begins to sound and the room flashes a grim red color. On each side of the room, a large circular machine appears from out of the floor. Both suddenly activate creating a sort of colorful but forceful wormhole. Both George and Harold find themselves being sucked into the colorful holes with each of them being attracted to the different portal. They hold onto each other in the hopes that they won’t be separated. But the portals become much stronger and it takes the boys everything in their power not to let go. It eventually becomes too much and both boys are forced to let go. The last thing they see before being transported into a new dimension is their best friend with tears in their eyes and screaming their lungs out in despair.

And those are the main ones I have so far. I probably will think of more later on. What do you think?

 • works with shuichi during old maid cus they’re vibing detectives  • made makoto sit out cause it was to complicate  •would avenge him in the games after though  • made everyone agree that celeste should be banned from playing any card games  • literally watches everyone's move and detects their body language, is honestly almost equal to celeste  • everyone is too scared to give her any +4 cards in uno

hina

 • does better when food is bet  • teams up with sakura no matter what the game is  • lives for hungry hungry hippos!!  • playing games? donut.

hiro

 • literally doesn’t know how he’s here or where he is  • somehow got 34 cards in uno   • loves those mythical rpg games, insists it's happening in a parallel universe  • suggests dungeon and dragons

byakuya

 • was only good at monopoly and bullied everyone about it for months  • gets mad at games like charades because “he doesn’t understand plebian culture”  • ends up getting all the monopoly houses somehow  • “byakuya you can’t buy a win in uno” “are you challenging me”

toko

 • is good at trivia games (to much library time smh)  • during truth or dare would always try and dare byakuya to do stuff with her,,  • got truth or dare banned real quick  • suggested 7 minutes in heaven just to try and get byakuya to get in with her, it also got banned quickly 

komaru

 • comforts her brother after being sent to the baby table  • mostly teams up with toko and helps her get over byakuya denying her  • they end up having a lot more fun together uwu  • cries if she loses

sayaka

 • really likes karaoke and always impresses everyone  • sits out half the time so she doesn’t ruin her reputation by freaking the fuck out over card games  • challenges hiyoko to just dance and loses every time

leon

 • an actual god at darts  • almost hit someone in the eye with the same exact darts  • likes that one wii baseball game cause he dominates  • got the baseball game banned because he forgot to put on the wii-strap and ended up breaking the tv

chihiro

 • likes puzzle games  • likes puzzles in general,,   • has to hold mondo and taka back from beating people up  • likes when chiaki is there cause he can show her games he made

mondo

 • accidentally flipped out after losing and flipped the table over  • had to clean it up with taka  • is the bodyguard for the “liar jail” corner, makes sure they can’t leave til their timeout is over

taka

 • studies all the rules, repeats them every 5 seconds to make sure everyone understands  • he will honestly beat you to death if u cheat  • makes cheaters sit in the corner he calls “liar jail” (celestia and kokichi get sent to liar jail.)

 • wasn’t invited anymore because he suggested strip poker  • favorite game is ‘go fish’  • tried to play with his lewd art cards,, was sent to jail by taka

celeste

 • got banned from card games first night  • kept winning so she got banned from everything  • forced to sip tea and judge people’s bad gameplay  • always suggests sketchy gambling games 

sakura

 • one of the people nominated to hold back the others from strangling each other   • tenko, her, and nekomaru always arm wrestle over stuff  • ends up falling asleep in the arm chair with hina

junko

 • purposely tries to lose even if she’s teaming with mukuro  • would post updates on all her social media accounts  • claims she gets drunk off any beverage  • majority of the time she judges peoples clothing  • “your fucking shoes suck have a +4”

mukuro

 • just wants to support her sister before she gets to drunk tbh  • doesn’t take the games that seriously so she usually just watches  • when they play fps games on the rare occasion,,, a god  • plays roblox phantom forces, is level 900, and has a k/d of 45.0, gets accused of ‘cheating’ by random nine year olds  • gets banned from most fps steam games for ‘hacking’  • unironically enjoys training with peko using the wii fit
