Sex, Motherhood, and the MRSA Motel

As Trip and I are coming up on our 15th wedding anniversary, I am reminded of my 10th anniversary. We had just welcomed Kennedy into our family a mere 7 weeks earlier and I was exhilarated and exhausted all at the same time.

After three stressful weeks in New Jersey waiting for the OK to come home, we had finally settled into somewhat of a routine when we got back to Maryland. Like most new mothers, I was up with Kennedy every 3-4 hours, but I was also still working a minimum of 5-6 hours a day. As a freelancer, there’s no such thing as “maternity leave.” I was even going into one of my client’s offices a couple of times a week.

Our 10th anniversary coincided with a baby shower my sister-in-law planned for us up in Erie. Trip and I took advantage and arrived a day early—on our anniversary.

My mother graciously offered to watch Kennedy so we could go out to dinner and celebrate. It was our first time alone since Kennedy had been born and we jumped at the opportunity.

After cocktails then wine (oh, and dinner), we headed back to my mom’s happy, tipsy, and a bit, um, well, horny. After all, I had been in NJ for three weeks with Kennedy while Trip was back in Maryland. Then 1-2 days after I got home, Trip headed for a week-long hunting vacation. When he got back, Kennedy was sleeping in a bassinet next to the bed and I was exhausted all... the... time. Needless to say, the weeks had stacked up and something had to give.

On a whim, I pointed out a little travel motel less than a mile from my mother’s house and told Trip to pull in. He was stunned but game, but only if I was the one to go ask for the room.

I gladly jumped out of the car and went to the front desk. As I stood there in my black leather leggings, Vera Wang heels, and Chanel-ish long jacket, I asked the clerk for a room. He looked me square in the eye and said, “All the cheap rooms are taken.”

I don’t know what I was more offended by. That he thought I was a hooker, or that he thought I was a cheap one!

I said, “Excuse me? The higher priced room is fine.” So, $90 (yes, the non-cheap room was $90) and a great laugh later, we walked into the “expensive room” and gasped.

It was awful, bordering on disgusting.

I refused to go anywhere near the bed and the bathroom was unmentionable. At the risk of sharing too much, let’s just say I simply removed my shoes and as little else as possible and refused to sit or lay down on anything.

But the shoes, as it turns out, was a bad idea. I had an ingrown nail and apparently the carpet wasn’t so safe either.

Five days later, I was back in MD and in the hospital. With MRSA. I had a fever of 103 and my blood pressure was 45/60. Bad.

I was in the hospital for three days and actually got the sleep and rest I clearly needed. In fact, the doctors said that my stress was so acute that my immune system was shot, leaving me wide open for MRSA to set in.

I came home with a new understanding that I had to not only take better care of myself, but that romance as a parent needed an overhaul as well. Trip started helping with nighttime feedings and I made a point to go back to sleep for at least 1-2 hours in the AM. I also started running again to help with the stress.

On the romance side, Trip and I started having lunch together occasionally and going out for date nights 1-2 times a month. We also realized the benefit of a guest room :)

Ultimately what the experience taught me was that motherhood does change your sex life, but you don’t have to resort to the MRSA motel to find romance. You can build in the romance every day.
