JAKE: We… well, we havent spoken in quite some time! Things have changed phenomenally since we last saw each other.
JAKE: Ive gotten far better at fighting since!
JAKE: (I wish things could go back. These palace halls make my very skin itch.)

DERSE ROYALTY AU LINEUP!!!! All the Strilondes are siblings in this AU, and are princes and princesses. Derse and Prospit are warring countries, one of which uses magic to fight (Prospit) and the other relies on vaguely industrial machinery (Derse). Magic is outlawed in Derse. I’ll give more info if wanted!
I tried to strike a balance between extravagance and practicality depending on personalities. Dirk and Rose’s clothing are the most embellished, but while Roxy and Dave’s outifts may seem plain, the dye used to get such vivid colors would probably be horrifically expensive.
Dirk: He is the oldest, and therefore the first in line for the throne. I tried to show how he is trying to keep up put-together appearances, but is still mainly focused on combat-readiness. Notice the visible steel toes on his boots! He would also probably carry his sword around at his hip.
Roxy: Her outfit is one of the most practical for plot reasons (not to be divulged yet). She prioretizes outdoor-preparedness, with a hood for harsher weather. When in the palace, she would probably enjoy wearing much fancier, flouncy attire, like fluttery dresses.
Rose: The most prim and proper, even more than Dirk, and the least practical. She would absolutely love showing off her fashion, and doesn’t need much movement as her work and/or hobbies would likely be academic in nature. I added pearls to her bodice because they make me think of sea creatures!
Dave: He barely wears any embellishment on his clothes, and is usually out on the training grounds with the knights. Hence the sturdy, well-made leathers. He is following Dirk’s combat-driven ways, just with less pressure from outside forces.

Give me the poorly socialized royals. Not in a “this guy has never talked with commoners before so he’s hella classist and stuck up and snobbish” but more like the disguised teenaged heir of the Entire Kingdom sneaking to the night market to explore and see the sights, attempting to blend in with the clusters of other teens, and when one cracks a joke using regional slang the heir just blanches and goes “ahaha! Yes! The skimmer sure does, ah. Sure does. Skim. :) Hm.”
The group of other kids just assume that the disguised heir is a bit of an airhead except One Guy who’s like “You Literally match EVERY DESCRIPTION of the royal family’s descendant! Height! Hair color! Complexion!” Someone in the groups pipes up “Well I’m five-foot-seven too, does that make me heir to the throne?” “We have matching beauty marks! We’re Looong Loooost Coooousiiiinsss!!” Eventually it just devolves into the group adopting this poor, polite, under socialized weirdo who conveniently dodges family questions.
Anyways flash forward and the heir has now come of age to ascend to the crown, the group of teens has grown and they’re attending the coronation about to toss tomatoes onto the soldier’s armor to make kebabs on the spikes (and delightfully failing to have any precision.) The heir comes into view and one in the group drops the Entire basket of tomatoes on an underpassing knight’s helmet, “HOLY SHIT THATS OUR LITTLE GUY” and the heir just “!! :D Good day friends! Come down and greet my family, they’d love to meet you all!” The family Would Not love to be introduced to any raggedy paupers with sticky tomato hands, but the heir is now the Ruler, and everyone’s watching, and it’s all for appearances really, the tomato smell is temporary
Now the ascended ruler has a whole squad of grown street urchins willing to kick everyone’s ass for their friend. It’s also a direct telephone line from the public about poor infrastructure, conditions to be fixed, labor laws, taxation, etc. This got off track but yes make your fictional royalty a little bit dense/sheltered but nice and you got yourself some fine dining there

Obligatory Derse/Prospit royalty AU, Aradia’s a member of Derse’s court, Jade’s part of Prospit’s royal family. Political drama ensues! Rambling under the read more :)
Aradia’s family is basically funeral directors, with more spiritual significance put on the role. They’re pretty low on the political hierarchy, other than when important funerals take place, and so having an affair with someone so far above her social class is pretty scandalous! With the doubled taboo of it being someone on the other side of a cold-war-esque long running political conflict. Aradia loves the funerals, but tends to come off as pretty unsettling. She’s better at politics than Damara so she ended up representing the family in the court.
Jade’s in line for the Prospit throne, behind Jane and Jake. Her and June are twins and so there’s tension on who should be taking the throne after Jake. She has a hard time with all of the social rules and niceties that she has to do as part of the royal family (tbh, Jane’s the only one that really took to it, though June and Jake can fake it well enough) and doesn’t have a ton of goodwill with the courts. On top of her unruly demeanor, having an affair with a low-ranking Dersite is a recipe for some absolutely scathing looks. She tries really hard to keep the whole thing under wraps, but of course people catch on when they keep disappearing together during events
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s the sketches for their outfits! Jade’s is loosely based on Victorian/Edwardian gowns and with Aradia I chose to go with more of a futuristic/fantasy inspo. Sometimes I feel like people will exoticize Jade and Jake by putting them in vaguely orientalist outfits so I made a pretty conscious decision to lean away from that. Also I felt like the heavy, stifling quality of Edwardian-esqe gowns would be a good way to emphasize how Jade feels about court life, ya know? With Aradia I was thinking that Derse would probably be less into the glitz and glam that I was leaning into with my Prospit designs so I tried to make it more sleek and ‘practical’ even though it’s not actually practical if you think about it, lmao.

Oh, I NEED to hear this: What makes you think it's a disgrace of a royalstuck AU? I've never read it, but most of the (Active and vocal) fandom seems to enjoy it.
For context: I was Benadryl high while posting that.
Second context: my power just went out
Third context: For anyone wondering, royalstuck is a homestuck subsection (like a lyricstuck) comprised of fantastical outfits and more heavily leaning into the class and hierarchy systems found within Derse and Prospit (dreamer moons). It’s, in layman’s terms, a Princess AU.
Passerine is a disgrace of a royalstuck, as most royalstucks are, because it leans *too heavily* into the connections of class between characters and less on the connections of, well, personality between characters. Where you’d hope - and assume - to find interaction on a human level between two characters, you find it’s been skewered by the hierarchy system the fanfic follows.
In shorter terms, royalstuck kills character for the sake of sucking the British royals fat cock, because romanticizing war crimes is both parties favorite sport.
Im not saying the author of passerine is out to soup up the queen herself, but they are, inadvertently, making people become fascinated with a form of royalty that has likely never existed. Which is grounds for younger fans to ask “is the monarchy really that bad? It was cool in the Minecraft youtuber fanfiction!” Which is not only painful to write but painful to think about. Because I hate thinking and writing about fucking idiots.
But I’m getting to outwardly political and I don’t want someone on Twitter to screenshot this and get me doxxed. So I’ll end with saying that Passerine is a shitty Royalstuck fanfiction because it murders any character it could have and replaces it with something that’s easier to make angst for. The characters are one-dimensional, in my opinion, because if they were actually in-character, the conflict would’ve ended in the first chapter with the help of some TNT and trash talking.

…johnkat fantasy (inspired by dishonored!) au??? karkat’s the bodyguard of the prince of prospit and when the prince of prospit gets kidnapped and karkat gets thrown in prison, he breaks out and goes to get john to so john can ascend to the throne.  also. is the outsider bro? …yes. bro’s the outsider and dave, dirk, rose, and roxy (and rosalie, david and roxane) are the Marked. ...bro decided to give karkat his mark and now karkat has powers but karkat refuses to use them and even tells bro to go fuck himself. bro’s intrigued by him the thought of karkat with an eyepatch with blood knife in his hands kneeling in front of john’s throne is incredibly Sexie and the thought of john becoming a tyrant known as the John the Butcher with karkat staying by his side as a loyal protector is also incredibly Sexie bro… doesn’t have to the outsider. if i streamline this, bro could be a “loyalist” who helps karkat escape prison and trains him to get back into shape so karkat can get rid of the conspirators! ok so. the king of prospit is killed??? injured? and karkat’s framed for it and gets thrown in the dungeons. the prince of prospit gets whisked away before he can get hurt. and karkat spends days? weeks? in the dungeons before he escapes and meets bro. karkat gets retrained by bro and he gets told by bro that john is safe and while that’s good, the conspirators still needed to be dealt with so john can actually ascend to the throne of prospit. karkat finishes getting retrained by bro, goes after them and puts john on the throne. nice. (whether john stays nice during this is oooh up in the air. tyrant john is sexie what can i say) listen. tyrant john with his unsure bodyguard karkat is sexie. karkat wondering if he should still be loyal to john and john knows that karkat’s rethinking his loyalty to him but he doesn’t want to hurt karkat jkgkjgkjg Sexie john giving karkat a glass eye that’s the color of his eyes because john’s a possessive bastard kjkgkgkggjhg if bro’s the king of derse and he’s interested in karkat but john’s interested in karkat too… is there gonna be a war??? for karkat??? (probably not but it's a nice thought!) when bro tells karkat that he’s not only from derse but derse royalty, karkat isn’t too pleased. why does derse royalty want prospit’s royalty back?

More on this royal families au, id love to hear abt jade and john :D
This might be a better tag because it's more encompassing, actually. One second, let me alter that.
Done.
I haven't thought too much about them yet, but now I'm obligated to. My favorite Royal AU builds feature a cultural disparity between Derse and Prospit, where Derse is the superior war power due to their advanced magic and their many libraries and how many of their people are literate. Meanwhile, Prospit is a shining golden country with low literacy and high royalty worship (our prince is so great and can do no wrong) and agricultural dominance, along with many dark secrets. Hmm.
Prospit celebrated the birth of their golden twins for two weeks, showering the country in messengers that did not rest until every ear knew about the beautiful Prince Sp'rijuhn and the dashing Princess Prov'njada, whose names meant The One Who Breathes Deeply and The One Who Nourishes Greatly. A joke, messengers would say, because one screamed and the other ate disproportionately.
The tale goes that the twins were born of an impoverished maid, elevated to status as queen for a short time because their Lord loved her so, before tragically losing her life in childbirth. Prospit hails this passing with solemn expressions and mourning.
It is a lie. Sp'rijuhn and Prov'njada were sired by their father, Lord Ruler of Prospit's Gilded Fields, but born of his mother, the Grand Matron. Though her son controls many political intricacies, the Grand Matron still controls Prospit and she rules it firmly. Her "grand"children will be raised in the ways of magic, gifted to the Pale Court that watches them from Prospit's prophetic clouds.
Sp'rijuhn will grow to a marriageable age alongside Prov'njada and when the time comes for their joint coronation, to ascend the throne, tragedy strikes. The Lord Ruler takes ill and all that's left is their Grand Matron, their beloved Regent. Within a month, all of Prospit hears of the loss and demands that his children take their thrones. Certainly they will.
Under their "grand"mother's watchful eye, they will be elevated to Lord and Lady of Prospit, bathing in the ceremonial pools together, fingers interlacing. She sees their closeness. She is glad. It will make everything so much easier.
