SHORT BIOGRAPHY/INTERVIEW:

From Sofia/Bulgaria comes Donnie Donkov (Dobrin 'Donnie' Donkov), a talented man who began writing songs since he was very young. Over time he learned to play classical and electric guitar, keyboards, percussion, bass and flute and with the help from the new technologies, he edited and mastered his songwriting and compositions. He was in a band called Lithium for a few years after 2000. Donnie was writing, composing, arranging, editing, mixing, recording and mastering his songs on his computer until 2015, when he created 'Donnie Donkov Project' - a formation of guest musicians, editors, artists, music video directors and more, to record studio singles and albums, shooting professional videos, do all kinds projects in the name of ART. Donnie is the only producer of the 'Project' for now. He still writes, composes and arranges everything. Though he says he prefers not to sing his own songs.

“Only 3 of them are professionally recorded for now and recording a fourth one with 'Donnie Donkov Project', but even so, I believe that all songs sound nice. We've got professionally shot official video to "Gone Forever" and at the end of the summer we're shooting another one to "It's a Beautiful Day to Start Over". By the way, recently I began to write so much new stuff - new Instrumentals and songs, movie-like music, kiddy songs... entirely new music, new lyrics', poems, short stories (even began a novel), screenwriting and some other... kind of alternative stuff which are still in progress. I'm full of ideas!!! The other thing is that I realized now I am also interested in some things like marketing, commercial and advertising, photography, music, video and photo editing and montage, directing, acting, all visual arts, painting and so many more... You can say I am expanding myself, hehe. Through exploring everyday new bands, new songs and new styles, I understand the richness of the music so I continue writing all the time”, says Donnie.

Who were your early inspirations?

Each one of my songs is inspired by a significant event in my life, music band or by a person – a girlfriend, friend of mine or even by a member of my family. For this reason I can’t determine exactly, what was the inspiration of my first songs and music. The songs, which I have liked and inspired me at my early age, are all from different music styles, because of the fact that I have went through many different stages of structuring my music preferences. Some of those songs are Bulgarian hits, which are not world-famous, but they were very influential for my development as a composer. ‘The Doors’ and ‘The Beatles’ are classic, they have inspired many generations and musicians. ‘U2’ also had a big impact on my music, though 'Led Zeppelin', Tony Mortimer, 'Rainbow', Sinead O'Connor, 'Pink Floyd' and Michael Jackson had the last word.

How do you classify your music?

My music is serious, even, like some say depressing, depending on the person. When I write, I write from deep inside my soul. For me this is like a healing process. There are always things you can't express or say to other people. I am trying to send a message to the them and their inner thoughts and feelings. I have always admired ‘Pink Floyd’ due to the fact that their music style can’t be exactly determined – their songs are only one of their kind and unique. A lot of people have asked me this question – how do I classify my music and what is my music style. I am always answering I don’t like to limit myself to a particular gender of music. The classification of my music could be done only by people who like and who don’t like certain songs and compositions of mine. I can say for sure that It's not productive for any composer, songwriter to put restrictions and to limit his music only to a certain style.

What do you want listeners to get from your music?

For me are very important the feelings, which my music stimulates in everyone and the legacy which I want to pass to the audience from all generations. When I was young I have saw and felt what an impact the the music from the early 90's had on the audience and me, and I know what an inspiration for the people was the hippie music wave in the late 60's and early 70's. My dream is to influence people like that.

I want to believe that I would contribute for the moral development of the people through a serious and deep music, which also could be a way to remember and save some of the lost memories from the past. I would like to influence people the way I was influenced from songs by great performers such as ‘Led Zeppelin’ for example.

Tell me about any CDs you have and any projects in the works?

We have recorded and released with 'Donnie Donkov Project' a single called "Whisper Volume 1" which Includes 3 of the songs from the upcoming album "Whisper" ("Gone Forever", "Up on my Tower" and "It's a Beautiful Day to Start Over"). Unfortunately the single is available only online, but it's in all online stores. Right now we are recording a fourth song called "Coming Back to You". When we get financed, we'll continue the recordings of the album. The other music which I have recorded, I recorded with my own efforts, with the help of the new technologies at home. Everything that I have recorded I am uploading on the Internet. I haven’t found anyone to produce my music and for now I am the only producer, but nevertheless I am working on 10 new songs and instrumentals. I don’t like to sing my own songs and that is why I am worked with the singer/songwriter Viara Ivanova, who is singing the demos in 5 of my songs. From the fall of 2017 I am gathering a band not only with guest musicians. Though the guest musicians are pretty famous and awesome and fortunately for now there were plenty and great to work with!

Tell me about yourself a little.

Since I can remember, I loved music, I got inspired from it and expressed myself with it. All my life was music. My parents told me that when I was so little and I barely spoke I sang, danced and drummed all the time, haha. Maybe I was 10 or something I liked the late 80’s and the early 90’s. I began from pop, rap, Bulgarian music and soft rock. Later on, in my life, my interest in music moved to hard rock, grunge, metal, punk, jazz, classical and movie music and then I have realized that maybe I can try to write something on my own because I lived with music all the time and it was the thing that mattered the most to me and kept me going. I wrote my first song in 1996. That’s how I found a way to express myself through music. Then my friends liked the songs so I decided to go on writing. I felt from that like never before and I realized this is my calling.

People banished him, locked him in this little cage and threw away the key. Girl: Why would they do that? Man: Because people are scared and mean. Girl: Scared of what? Man: The truth! They are ugly inside and they don’t want anyone to see or know that. Even I am ugly inside, but I don’t want to know it, I don’t want to realize it. Girl: You’re not ugly! Man: You’ll see. Now that you told me the truth I can always take advantage of you. Girl: You wouldn’t do that! Man: Everybody does. Every normal person. And so will I if it will make my life better, and others’ worse Girl: I can’t believe that! Man: I can’t help it I am HUMAN! Girl: No!!! Man: So remember. From now on don’t tell the truth, to anybody, ever and maybe someday you will become like me. Look how free I am! My cage is so BIG, it’s HUGE, I even have a window!!!

The Poet by Donnie Donkov

“The Poet”

Donnie Donkov

The poet was sitting in his chair with a pen in his hand

And a glass of red wine beside him

He was staring at the empty sheets

The curtains on the window were wide open

His was waiting for an inspiration

The previous night he noticed something weird in the mirror

His hair was turning grey very fast these days

For the first time in his life he felt mortal

He couldn’t sleep all night, thinking

Trying to remember the past

He realized too many things just for one night

That the better part of his life is gone

That his life, interesting or not, was wasted

Some very important things were missing from it

He thought that he should write some kind of memoirs or autobiography

But he was sitting in front of the empty sheets

And couldn’t remember the most part of his past

He didn’t know from where to begin

Which was his first memory that mattered?

The poet was so confused

He was stuck, for the first time he was stuck

He couldn’t believe it at first

Outside was too dark to see because of the storm

The poet liked storms

He thought this was a sign

His eyes were filled with tears

What now?

If there is nothing more in his life from now on

He thought that he must be too depressed

From his own thoughts to write

He felt old

He stood up and went to the mirror again

He started to stare at it

His eyes and his mind were 20 years older than his body

All his life he knew that he is different from everybody else

He always felt older than the others around him

And that was why he started to write in the first place

He couldn’t speak normally with anyone else

Except his sheets

He went back to his chair

He took a sip from the wine and tried to concentrate

How he could forget so many things, he thought

And those things which he remembered

Were massy and he didn’t know which one happened when

Then suddenly something happened

He remembered

All of his memories attacked him like a punch in his face

All at the same time

He started to cry, he cried couple of times in his whole life

The more he remembered the more he cried

How could he miss so many opportunities to be happy?

Maybe he missed them on purpose

He didn’t want to be happy

Or maybe he couldn’t be happy

In a such world, times of confusion, war and so much hypocrisy

Maybe because no one understood him

He didn’t think anymore for the reason

It was pointless now

He wiped his tears, drank from the wine again

And started to write

He was writing and writing, without a break for hours

He was writing like he never wrote a word in his life so far

It was weird and new for him

He looked from the window

The storm was gone, but it was still dark

He wondered what time it was

Not that it mattered

But when he saw the clock he realized

He wrote all day and part of the night

He looked at his sheets again

Those people he wrote about from his past

Were strangers, he didn’t know them

He didn’t know them at all

He has changed too much

He was alone too much time

He thought, was that good or bad?

It didn’t matter at the time

He continued to write

It was like an adventure to him

A new exiting adventure

The poet closed his eyes

And fell in some kind of trance

He looked around, he was by the sea

This was a memory, he was 21 again

Beside him was a girl, holding his hand

He looked at her

The girl was his greatest love

The love of his life

His mate soul

He wanted to marry her, he remembered

How the things got so ugly through the time?

The whole world got ugly

It was unbelievable for him

It wasn’t a dream or hallucination

Just a vivid memory

He remembered how much they loved each other

And his eyes filled with tears again

But then like a thunder it stroke him

He didn’t remember her

He didn’t know anymore as well

How could this be? That was impossible!

He remembered where they have been,

What they did when they were together

How happy they were most of the time

He remembered only the good times

But he forgot who she really was

Especially the little things

Voice, face, smell, laughter again

But unfortunately it was true

He forgot her as well

Maybe she forgot him too

She must had changed too

The same time passed for her as well

He calculated how old she is now

He turned and looked at the phone

He still remembered her number by heart

He shook his head

She continued her life

She may had a husband and kids by now

And lives somewhere else, even in another country maybe

Then another thunder came

He remembered why they broke up

What he had done to her

He couldn’t believe he was the same person

He felt like he was broke inside

And if he was broke now,

How broke must she had been back than

He realized he ruined his own life, leaving hers

He took another bottle of wine and opened it

Took a sip from it and wrote all of his thoughts

He had to go on writing

Now he needed to

This was his confession

After a while he suddenly stopped

He needed more than a muse

Then opened a drawer

And found a picture of her in a frame in it

He cleaned the dust from it and put it on the desk

He continued writing

It was morning again

Outside was sunny

He finally wrote what he needed to

From now on it should be easy, he thought

Then smiled thinking that if he publishes this

She may read it

He was so tired from all the emotions

Finally he got up and went to his bed,

Thinking about her

Somehow he was sure she was happy now

That was the important thing

He fell asleep with a smile on his face.
