How to Prevent a Sewage Backup

Sewage backup draper can be costly to clean up. It is also important to take steps to prevent this from happening. This includes not flushing items that cannot dissolve – such as napkins, baby wipes, paper towels, and feminine products.

These items will probably need to be thrown away unless you can have them professionally dry-cleaned.

Backed-up sewage contains harmful bacteria that can make you sick if it comes into contact with your skin. It can also cause mold growth and water damage to your floors, walls and furniture.

The best way to prevent a sewer backup is to have your home’s sewer line regularly inspected. You should also avoid pouring cooking grease down your drains since this can harden and clog your pipes.

In addition, you can help prevent sewer problems by not flushing anything but toilet paper down your drains. If you notice a problem with your sewer line, call your local public works department right away. They may be able to send a crew to repair the problem before it gets out of hand.

While it’s not easy to sort through your basement belongings, it’s important to know which items can be salvaged and which must be discarded.

Most items can be cleaned with hot water, ordinary antibacterial household cleaners, and bleach. If you’re going to attempt salvaging anything from a sewage backup, you should clean and disinfect your equipment first.

If possible, open basement windows and position box fans to create cross-currents of ventilation. Allow the area to dry fully before attempting to use it again.
