“From a long time, I noticed you by the circulation cards. I bet you don’t know how many times I passed you in the library. I even sat in the seat right next to you a couple of times.” (Seji’s rooftop confession Whisper Of The Heart.)
The first and only Ghibli couple to make this cut! Sorry Howl and Sophie I love you too and you’re getting an honorable mention edit at the end of this week. I watched Whisper Of The Heart my first time the summer before I officially entered high school so I was just the right age for this sweet and enjoyable romantic drama.
Seji and Shizuko mean so much to me. Throughout my years of high school was when I really started to become a writer. Writing gave me a constructive outlet to the way that I was feeling about specific things. It brought out the best in me and helped me learn how to communicate with others. I watched this movie every day for a long time in high school. It’s such a sweet just genuinely pure romance between the two main characters.
Both Seji and Shizuko have their own dreams and aspirations that push the other to achieve them and do their best. Seji wants to be a world class violin maker and Shizuko wants to be a writer. Both of them compliment each other remarkably well! Seji is a lot more of the strong silent type that is still willing to be vulnerable and open with her about how he feels and what that means for his future. He loves Shizuko so deeply and that as a kid made me wish for my own Seji. Shizuko is a lot more of a bubbly type. She’s a little bit happier and that causes her to be more driven to accomplish the things that she wants. She wants to do her best because she feels like sometimes she’ll never reach Seji’s level. To me, that’s a really relatable character flaw. She pushes herself to the extremes where her grades start to suffer due to her writing. She gains a new drive and ambition through Seji where before she was just averagely going through life almost adrift not really sure what she wanted out of this life.
Whisper Of The Heart is one of my all time favorite Miyazaki romance stories. While he didn’t direct it he did write it and it clearly shows through the love story and how well they compliment one another. He’s never been the type of director/writer to make a weak romance. I love that he takes the females at times more seriously then the males since Shizuko gets the most screen time. We see her work her tail off to prove herself to Seji and I love that she eventually got to stand at the top of her mountain and be proud of herself for what she had accomplished.
“Equivalent exchange! I’ll give half of my life to you if you give half of yours to me!” (Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Episode Finale Journey’s End.)
Sorry that it took me so long to come out with this edit! I had a physics exam that studying for it totally kicked my ass to the curb and I didn’t have the energy to talk about my favorite ships. I also didn’t really know how to explain why it is that I love EdWin so much.
Edward x Winry was my absolute life when I was in the 8th grade. Times were simpler then. I could share the manga chapters that I bought with my best friend who was also obsessed with the show at the time. If I were to think of any couple that I loved for their bickering and contrasting personalities it is these two. They are just both so stubborn that they never back down without a fight. Part of the reason why I love them so much is that they both had their own goals and their own ambitions that they wanted to achieve. Ed with his dream of bringing his brother back to his full body and Winry with her dream of making lives easier through the miracle of automail.
Childhood friends to lovers is a common ship archetype that can usually feel forced or unnecessary in my personal opinion unless it’s done right. To me Ed and Winry are one of the best examples of childhood friends to lovers. Part of it is because they weren’t completely codependent on one another for everything. In fact most of the time they bickered about the littlest of things. Their relationship was one of the first that pulled me in watching ‘03 and shipping them was one of my first childhood memories of loving a ship. I love them more than anything and I still can’t help but love them every time I rewatch the show.
Part of me has lost a little bit of love for this show because of the accusations against Vic Ed’s voice actor but I don’t want to get into that now because that’s a whole other can of worms that can cause me to go onto a tangent. I love this show and it helped get me through my first year of high school. I watched it within the span of a week of me just sitting in front of the television during the summertime. It brought me my love of karate since I wanted to be just like Edward. When I did the discipline I was given the nickname “FullMetal” because I was always reading the manga. Ed and Winry’s relationship was one of the multitude of things that I could praise about the show in particular.
Kinda a weird one 🤷🏼♀️
