At my local art museum, there’s a statue of Sekhmet tucked away in a little, secluded corner. When I visit, I like to stop at it to pray and meditate, and I just had the most moving experience with it today.

These past few months have been difficult, spiritually. As I deconstruct from my conservative, Catholic upbringing, I find myself so fearful and distant about the supernatural. The idea of being wrong, of following something else that is going to hurt and delude me, scares me so deeply.

And yet, as I sat beneath the statue of Sekhmet that once gazed out over Kemet, my thoughts were quiet- even if only for an instant. I prayed and offered devotions, and I was washed over by a wave of love and comfort. I stared at the tiny, carved details on Sekhmet’s face and was overcome by the desire to cradle myself against her statue. I felt so truly safe and loved, and I felt the full scale of my godly mother’s affection for me. She holds no expectations, no conditions upon which she will offer me her love. She will ask me to be stronger. To be better. She will help me grow and change. She will chastise me when I’m wrong and step away from me when she knows I need solitude to understand something. She is powerful and terrifying and mighty. But she will always be there, waiting with open arms when I reach out to her for help.

Dua Sekhmet-Bast. Dua Sekhmet. Dua Netjeru.

So I hosted Solstice for my pagan friends and loves last night and it was a roaring success!

Setting mine and my nesting partners altars up on the kitchen table and allowing our worshipping friends to add their own bits for their own deities warmed my heart like nothing else ever could honestly. There's something so tender about seeing the different ways people worship, the different ways they give their offerings, the raw emotions.

Also I was pleasantly surprised that alongside my offerings to Sekhmet and Bastet pretty much EVERYONE joined me in dancing topless around the fire, laughing and joking and happy and comfortable with eachother.

I'm so lucky to have the friends I have, no, the FAMILY I have through them. There was so much love radiating last night that I'm sure each and every one of our deities were smiling down on us.

Dua! The Pacifying of Sekhmet!

I actually celebrated this day Monday instead of yesterday bc of life insanity! I hand made flower arrangements for Her, cooked Her a meal, offered miscellaneous snacks and desserts, and anointed Her with lavender oil. I did the general rite for Sekhmet from Reidy’s books as well as read aloud the 38 Litanies of Sekhmet and prayed. I’m also hosting a service over FaceTime today for my fiancé who couldn’t be with me in person during the holiday I’m excited to see how that goes!
