The idea that uni protesters are "elitist ivy-league rich kids larping as revolutionaries" on Twitter and Reddit and even here is so fucking funny to me if you actually know anything about the student bodies at these unis. Take it from someone who's going to one of the biggest private unis in the US, 80% of the peers I know are either from the suburbs or an apartment somewhere in America, children of immigrants, or here on a student visa. I've heard about one-percenter students, but I've never met one in person. Like, don't get me wrong, the institution as a whole is still very privileged and white. I've talked with friends and classmates about feeling weird or dissonant being here and coming from such a different background. But in my art program, I see BIPOC, disabled, queer, lower-income students and faculty trying to deconstruct and tear that down and make space every day. So to take a cursory glance at a crowd of student protesters in coalitions that are led by BIPOC & 1st/2nd-gen immigrant students and HQ'd in ethnic housings and student organizations and say, "ah. children of the elite." Get real.
#also idk how to tell you this but even if it were true. wealthy children potentially sacrificing their educational careers to protest is#a good thing actually. idk how to tell you that caring about people from other nations is good#personal#“this war has nothing to do with most students cuz nobody's getting drafted” idk how to explain to you that we should be angry#that our tuitions of 10s of thousands of dollars that we pay every year for an education is being used to fund a genocidal campaign#also the implication that if you go to a uni institution you are automatically privileged by participation no matter your bg#i didn't /want/ to go to this school. i was supposed to go to a school with an art/animation program. but i realized my immigrant#parents have been working their whole lives to get me here. and turning the opportunity down would be a disservice to their sacrifice#this is getting into convos of “what 2nd gen kids owe their parents” which is different for everyone but. yeah#i just get pissed off at seeing people misrepresenting student bodies as “wealthy” and “privileged” and “elite” when it's such a blatant li#i remember a year ago a friend told me they can't fly home to hong kong for winter break because the plane tickets are too expensive#so they have to find temporary housing around the area#last quarter for a film doc class my film partner made a doc on a small group of marxist grad students from india discussing praxis#during a rally a few months ago in response to police presence the coalition invited palestinian students to speak about their experiences#and lead songs and read poems they wrote. these are STUDENTS. are they elitist too?#this is not to disregard my own personal privilege either.#this whole narrative's just to rationalize a lack of empathy to me. seeing a 19yo student get shot by a rubber bullet and your first#reaction is “HAW! HAW! bet richy rich didn't see THAT coming when she put on her terrorist hood!”#newsflash. these big uni campuses are HAUNTED by the violence of past protests and revolutions and police brutality. we know.#why do you think these coalitions have been making reinforced barricades at record speed

playing fallout new vegas and having to listen to caesar complaining about travelling and getting to study the languages of various communities living in the wasteland and calling it a waste of time while irl the humanities are constantly disregarded and getting a higher education and opportunities to study anthropology hands-on costs tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars and requires so many connections and he was just getting that FOR FREE from the followers but that wasnt cool enough for him so he decided to use the education he was given to start his little fascist larper group and enslave people

Best wishes during this tax season to Ray Molina, who is staring at his computer and trying to figure out if there's a way he can claim all 6 of his kids as dependents, even though 4 of them aren't alive.

It's all "Kids Need To Be Back In School!!" until city schools are so underfunded that multiple schools have to close for multiple days because there's no air condition and it's still hot out, or in winter there's no heat (while the former governor and centrist darling uses state funds to install a heated driveway at the governor's mansion)

Embarrassed but need help
So I’ve gotten into my dream university (yey!) but some of the costs to get there has been more than expected. So I have set up a GoFundMe with the hope of maybe getting some help from some kind souls out there.
So, who am I and why should you care? I’m your average dumpster fire with a special interest in costuming and design. I have somehow gotten into an award winning top university for costume production! This is my chance to really follow my dreams in a way I never imagined I would. Cheesy, I know, but it’s the truth.
So if you’re able to donate I’m forever grateful and if you don’t, no worries! You’re helping by just reflagging and charing the link.
I’m also adding my PayPal here: PayPal.me/FinnDaMadLad

my augmented reality community garden again - outside in the sunlight this time ☀
the idea for this one is to show how AR glasses could be used in future classrooms - with children exploring virtual gardens together and learning about plants via facts hidden in their roots. 🌻

Everyday goes a little something like this. I open tumblr and check the pathologic tag to find art because the vibe patho artists capture is exquisite.
I immediately see someone making fun of Daniil for having highly specific special interests that he likes talking about.
I ignore it and scroll further only to see another 5 posts calling him annoying for oh wait give me a second *rereads text posts making fun of Daniil* showing symptoms of autism.
I sigh like a depressed disappointed father. I close tumblr.

giving adam an interest in, nay, a LOVE for reading was truly the best thing that batb 2017 did in terms of changes from batb 1991. they both have their merits yadda yadda yadda but GOSH adam being a bookworm too, a PRETENTIOUS bookworm at that, is just perfect. not only does belle find someone who shares her interest, but she finds someone who very specifically challenges her. i think they have such different opinions about like every author and book they come across, and THAT is where the fun begins. they get to argue and debate and go back and study the books so they can build their arguments and they make an evening out of it without even trying. they’re so academic and bookish and nerdy !!!! and belle has been very clearly craving this kind of scholarly world her entire life. adam is suuuchh a dick about literature, he thinks he has the best literature taste in the world, and THAT is who belle needed by her side. someone who understands that love, but equally never lets there be a dull moment within that love. and, in the same vein, i think adam has had to suppress this side of himself all his life. i don’t think the people of his court ever cared to hear him infodump about his favorite books. i don’t even think his classmates at university would’ve cared to the same degree that he did. and he was definitely doing everything he could to fit in, be the most impressive kind of person, so if literary discussion wasn’t in that criteria? fine, it’s forgotten. these two have both been on their little literature islands for far too long, and FINALLY there’s someone else who really Gets It. and it is absolutely beautiful.

on one hand, the met gala is an important fundraising event, and the money raised does go to the metropolitan museum of art’s costume institute. on the other hand, the met gala has become an show of wealth that feels completely divorced from reality, and it will probably continue going out of favour with the public unless it pivots to some sort of other format

"From a very early age the child becomes part of a pattern he never fully understands and is powerless to change. It is a pattern that is made up of rituals - of form periods, morning assemblies, lessons that follow each other in quick succession for no apparent reason, bells rung by other people that govern his changes of activity, milk, school dinners, homework. His life is part of a scheme that has been devised by people he does not know, and into which he is expected to fit without question.
And it is here that we come to the real content of our educational structure. At school, the child is taught by experience that it is normal for other people to organize his life. He will be told in Civics or History that he lives in a democracy, which means that people govern themselves. But he will know as an experienced fact that he must expect to be governed by other people who know better than he does."
- Albert Hunt, The Tyranny of Subjects, in Education for Democracy (2nd ed., 1972)

hi tozette! Hope you're well. Been reading the posts about YA, but it's not very clear what you actually study? Is it YA lit?
Hey there! I did my undergrad degree in literary studies and criminology like a decade ago (that is: an arts degree, with a double major). Criminology isn't like law or forensic science or anything, which is a point of confusion for many people. It's basically the sociology of crime.
A year ago I went back to uni (a different uni) to study more literary studies and writing. My recent YA posts are just about a children's lit unit I'm doing which requires drawing conclusions from children's lit that's actually been published in the last few years and not, like, The Hobbit or The Wind In The Willows or whatever. So I don't actually study YA literature specifically, but it's the area of children's lit I've elected to focus on for this unit.
This is my last unit for this qualification, so in theory I graduate (again (??)) in June or July or something. I will probably ask them to post me my certificate and then maybe apply to study more. At the same uni? At a different one? A third institution, for fun? We just don't know.
