196 - Notting Hill (EW Summer Movie Preview - Listeners’ Choice)
Whoopsie daisies, we have come to the close of our May miniseries taking a deep focus look back at Entertainment Weekly’s seasonal movie preview issues. And the closer was chosen by you, listeners! For your Listeners’ Choice, you have selected the Summer Movie Preview for Notting Hill. The film famously went head-to-head with grand behemoth Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace and still emerged victorious at the box office, thanks in part to Julia Roberts’ reemergent romcom power and the charms of Hugh Grant back in bumbling mop-haired mode. Notting Hill stars both respectively as the most famous actress in the world and a modest travel bookstore owner who fall in love against the odds, and it comes with all of the signatures of the combined powers of director Roger Michell and screenwriter Richard Curtis.
This episode, we look back at the oft-revisited 1999 movie year and unpack why it remains so fascinating to talk about. We also discuss Roberts’ double-header of romcom hits that summer with Runaway Bride, Pulp Fiction’s influence on films like Go, and South Park’s movie mission to wage war with the MPAA.
Topics also include capsizing in a boat with Tilda Swinton, Eyes Wide Shut’s veil of mystery before release, and VH1 Divas Live 1999.

This was the highest-grossing British film of all time in 1999. I wonder why. I suppose star power makes all the difference that story cannot.
Notting Hill is a 1999 romantic comedy film directed by Roger Michell. The screenplay was written by Richard Curtis, and the film was produced by Duncan Kenworthy. It stars Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant with Rhys Ifans, Emma Chambers, Tim McInnerny, Gina McKee, and Hugh Bonneville.

Unrequited love in Notting Hill
Just realised that Bernie (Hugh Bonneville) from Notting Hill (1999) was completely in love with Honey (Emma Chambers) and you can see it multiple times throughout the film!

I know that, in canon, the Latte Hatte is Zoey, but my headcanon is that Ted is actually referring to Nora because he's a pathetic wet cat of a man with a Type. There is no actual "Latte Hatte" because everyone just imagines whichever of the three Beanie's workers they like and rolls with it.
Ted's goes "ah, yeah, the Latte Hatte (Nora)" and Paul nods sagely "indeed, the Latte Hatte (Emma)" while Bill's like "Don't talk that way about her (Zoey); she reminds me of my daughter!"

no bc pokey is absolutely the biggest theatre kid to ever exist. he turned the world into a freaking musical. i wouldn't be surprised if he found paul Very Funny in particular bc how?? could someone??? not like musicals? unprecedented. ridiculous.
i also find it so funny that basically everyone in hatchetfield enjoys musicals (zoey, bill, even max jagerman)– paul is like the one exception. even emma was in a musical when she was younger, but paul? nooo. pokey would've had a blast messing with his mind and making him be in one.

how freakin’ cute is it that ted talks to paul about the “latte hotte” meaning the pretty 23-year-old mean girl, meanwhile paul saw the 5ft angry woman in her 30s and thought “yeah, i know exactly who you mean”
