#end game is underrated

with regards to @dehliadelights ‘s post about ‘tatakai’ and ‘jump over yourself’ both being beat songs (link to the post here if you would like to view the lyrics to those songs)

i’ve been saying this! in solo/final remix, beat is the most well-defined character, musically. he’s got the chill casual theme (detonation), the sad backstory theme (jump over yourself) and the battle anthem (tatakai). these last two in particular were clearly written just for him and they really help to show the depths of his character.

‘jump over yourself’ is for certain meant to be him talking back to his parents, who always pushed him to be like his studious sister and didn’t like him for who he was. we can hear how beat never sat back and let them lecture him- he always fought back and boldly expressed himself. telling his parents to shut up, complaining that they were never satisfied with his efforts no matter how well they went, etc. beat refuses to let them belittle him- he loves himself as he is and wants to express everything he is and everything he feels (ughhh and it’s so tragic how he ran out of the house carelessly after having gotten in an argument with them and rhyme ran after him and that’s when they suddenly got hit…)

and then ‘tatakai’, his battle theme that lyrically demonstrates his determination to do whatever it takes to get what he wants- rhyme to be ok, of course, but on an even deeper level, some sense of control. he wants to find a way to turn rhyme’s pin noise back to human, and that’s what’s explicitly stated as for his reasons for becoming a reaper. but i don’t think it’s a terrible stretch to think that beat would rather stay in a place where he has at least some hope of growing strong and having power over others. he’s been kicked down all his life by parents and teachers who think he’s slow or useless and are unwilling to see his potential to be incredible in his own way, and i do not think the reapers’ game helped with that.

so beat gets handed the chance to become a reaper, to be one of the people in power around here, and of course he takes it! turns out the job isn’t for him. turns out he actually has to follow rules and stuff, when what he really wanted was to be powerful and free. and maybe on some level, despite him being a sweet guy, the chance to punch down for once. he doesn’t want to beat up neku and joshua, a pair of helpless innocent players in the same situation that he had just been in, but at the same time i wouldn’t be surprised if that was somewhat gratifying for him. cycle of abuse and all that. above all he needs to save rhyme and keep himself in control of himself. he’s willing to be the villain.

no tbh, i just ship the hyperspecific, highly self catering version of charisk that only exists in my brain

#it's a very weird slightly codependent.. thing. especially on frisk's end #because i was working off of the premise that they must have been abandoned and so very lonely before climbing the mountain #so having chara by their side constantly would've been of tremendous comfort to them and they would get more than a little attached #while chara is basically haunting the underground. constantly wanting to do things again and again and again because they can't let go #(neutral runs basically) #and frisk being so attached to them that they go along. as long as they can stick together #world's least stable 12 year olds #it's not even like i ship them in a kissy smoochie way it's not romantic #but it's definitely more than platonic too y'know. VERY codependent #but also the main appeal to me is the inherent tragedy of it. because in genocide chara becomes stronger and stronger #until frisk is fully put aside as they become aware of and interested in US. players #while in pacifist chara finally lets go and stops haunting the story... and frisk. who has to go on and live their own life #and while they DO have a support system and a new family with them. it's still gonna be a pretty big blow on them #especially since chara holds the SAVE file and the power to reset (even if they did manage it together throughout the game) #and now they're gone. like either way there's no ending where they break the loop AND they stay together #and that concept just makes me insane and is. so underrated. or at least i haven't seen anything with that premise yet #answered asks #hcs

I hadn't read the ztd prologue in a while but I'm midway through writing my fic that could benefit from that knowledge so I finally got around to it with some of my friends and I firstly did not recall Sigma losing his cool that quickly but also the only canonical interaction this Sigma has with this Akane being "Swear future you will not lie to past me about how the end of the world goes down" and her essentially lying about not lying is so good and Phi being just as mad at him as Akane but otherwise staying off to the side oough the dynamics at play there

s. ranni's gang, volcano manor/rya

a. millicent/the scarlet rot/the haligtree, patches, alexander, sellen, flame of frenzy & adherents

b. fia/rogier/d/godwyn, boc, diallos, roderika, castle morne, kenneth haight, the eternal cities

c. dung eater & the omens, nepheli loux & gideon, corhyn & goldmask, varre, the albinaurics in general, any other minor quest that it's easy to miss big chunks of e.g. blackgaurd big boggart or latenna

d. whatever mogh's deal was, whatever the fire cult's deal was, whatever farum azula's deal was, whatever the ancestral followers' deal was, any other recurring group of enemies that doesn't have an associated speaking role

e. any quest that revolves around handing in collectibles to a stationary dude

f. seluvis, who is that while also being one of the worst person you're still technically able to help

#elden ring #it's honestly a crime that volcano manor doesn't have an ending because it's probably the most fleshed out npc group besides ranni's gang #I might be underrating fia's quest because it just wasn't really present at all in my first playthrough #I talked to fia and she gave me the blessing and then I was like this sucks and then didn't talk to her again #patches would be s tier if the castanets actually did something. as-is it's just a good shaggy dog story #the scarlet rot subplot would be s tier if millicent could be summoned for a relevant fight #and maybe if one of her sisters invaded in the lake of rot somewhere #I also wish the haligtree/elphael was a little bit less dense with enemies #the dung eater is just an asshole with zero nuance or flair but I guess that's kind of the point #why on earth does he have his own ending??? the flame of frenzy is already the fuck everything chaos 10000 years option #the eternal cities is coasting on siofra being far and away the prettiest area in the game and containing the mimic boss/summon #they are not very developed or deep #if any faction in elden ring were to get extensively fleshed out in a dlc campaign I would want it to be the albinaurics #they're a really interesting setup for not much payoff #and hinge way too much on an easily missable quest
