past, present and future (with you)
WOO EMPIRES/DOUBLE LIFE FIC
the odds of me completing this entire thing are slim but for the time being imma try lmao
jimmy is frantically searching for string for a fishing rod when there’s a loud knock at his door. he grins, just knowing joel is gonna be there to launch him into the sky again and remembering the last time he tried.
he closes the chest and walks over to the door, but when he opens it he isn’t greeted with the regular sight of the god that is too tall to fit in his porch. instead, there’s a man with red eyes, blonde hair and a tail. definitely not joel.
the man looks slightly surprised when he sees jimmy. he notices that the man’s face is flushed with heat, so he’s probably not from around here.
“um, hi, sorry to bother you.” the man says, his tail swishing back and forth behind him. “but i heard that you found a giant fossil recently?”
“I did.” jimmy nods, slightly proud. “do you know pixlriffs?”
“yeah, he told me about it.” the man says. “I was wondering if you’d show me it?”
“‘course!” jimmy smiles, walking out of the doorway, closing his door behind him. “what’s your name?”
“i’m tango.” he says, following jimmy.
“i’m jimmy. nice to meet you.” jimmy says. “where are you from?”
“oh, nowhere around here.” tango says.
jimmy waits for him to elaborate, but he doesn’t so he leaves it.
“you’re an archeologist?” jimmy asks as they walk. it should be awkward, but somehow it’s not.
“not technically.” tango says. “it’s just interesting, you know? like, you never know what was happening here thousands of years ago. heck, this place could have been lush and green a thousand years ago.”
“I don’t reckon I could imagine this place as anything else.” jimmy says, looking around at the dry mountains of clay and sand that surrounds the town. “but yeah, you make a good point. I mean, this whole valley could have been a massive lake.”
tango nods enthusiastically, apparently pleased jimmy is interested. “yeah! like you could just find anything in here, buried in the sand.”
jimmy can’t help but smile. tango reminds jimmy of himself; often ignored or teased, so always happy when someone shares his interests.
“well, I mean, if you know anything about finding fossils.” jimmy shrugs, trying not to look like he cares too much (and probably failing based off tango’s excited expression). “you could come ‘round and show me how.”
tango grins. “that’d be awesome!”
jimmy feels his own face flush. well, it is a hot day. “c’mon, the mines are just this way.”
when they reach the fossil, tango is amazed by how authentic it is. (jimmy accidentally-on-purpose forgets to tell him that they had to replace the diamonds inside it).
“can you imagine how big of a creature this could have been?” tango’s face is so close to the glass, he has to wipe the condensation away with his sleeve. “if this was the size of the ribcage..” he trails off, apparently lost in thought.
jimmy doesn’t realise he’s staring until a rock falls from a ledge and he almost jumps out of his skin. he’s very thankful when tango doesn’t look up— he’s supposed to be the sheriff for crying out loud, a stone falling shouldn’t scare him that much.
“oh, hello.”
jimmy turns so fast he accidentally hits pixl with one of his wings.
“jesus, you scared me.” he says. “oh- sorry.” he notices he’s covered pix in yellow feathers.
“it’s fine.” pixl says, brushing the feathers off. “I scare a lot of people.”
“you are incredibly quiet.” jimmy puts a hand to his chest, feeling his heart racing. “what are you doing here?”
“well, i was visiting the fossil.” pixl says. “hey tango.” he adds.
“hi!” tango waves.
jimmy’s face heats up when he realises tango has seen the entire thing. he’s smiling in an amused way, but not it’s mocking. that’s good, right? he doesn’t want to ruin tango’s first impression of him.
“I can’t believe this is so exposed.” tango is saying to pixl. “it’s perfect for display already without excavation.”
“yeah, I mean we definitely struck lucky here.” pix agrees.
“and are all the diamonds naturally formed?” tango asks.
“they are.” pixl says. jimmy is incredibly relieved that he doesn’t tell tango what happened. “I think whatever creature this was might have had some kind of magic.”
“well, it’s a pretty magical world.” jimmy says, and the two turn to look at him. “we’ve got witches, we’ve got gods.”
pixl nods. “very true. you know, there’s evidence that there used to be ocean gods walking the earth. no one’s entirely sure how they died— from what we can infer, they were incredibly powerful.”
“ocean gods?” jimmy’s eyes widen. “how did you find out about them?”
“well, we think they existed.” pixl says, looking slightly surprised to have gotten jimmy’s full attention. “recently we’ve been finding some things washed up on the shore that look centuries old.”
“like what?” jimmy has to force himself not to jump when tango seemingly appears next to him. why is he so twitchy suddenly?
“so far we’ve found what seems to be prismarine from at least a millennia ago.” pixl says. “it doesn’t spawn naturally, and we know it’s not from a sea temple just by doing some tests.”
“so you’re saying that there could be remnants of a fallen kingdom in this world?” jimmy asks.
“more than one kingdom, we think.” pixl says. “we’ve found ancient carvings in the jungle, we’ve found preserved clothing in the swamp mud. heck, we’ve even found what we think are parts of statues right here in the mesa.”
“in the mesa?” jimmy says. “you mean, we could have statues from an ancient kingdom in the mesa?”
“it’s pretty likely.” pixl nods. “why, you interested?”
“am I!” jimmy exclaims.
“I can show you how to excavate things if you want.” tango says to him. “maybe I could come over in the next week?”
“that’d be amazing!” jimmy grins.
“does it matter what time?” tango asks.
“as long as it’s in daylight hours.” jimmy chuckles. “i’m gonna head back now, do you want me to show you the way out?”
tango nods. “i’ll stay here with pixl for a little longer, if that’s alright?”
“of course.” jimmy smiles. “i’ll see you around.” he waves and flies off.
