I hate to send this rant to you but I need someone to vent to. I am becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of conclusion to Mai and Zuko's story. I have been a huge Maiko fan for almost 8 years and they are the only thing keeping me in the fandom honestly. They have been broken up since I was 10 and I am 19 now😭. Like i am so tired. How long do we have to wait to just get a simple yes or no answer to if they got back together. PART 1.

PART 2. I low-key wish the comics never existed because it just created more problems for Maiko. It seems like when the creators want to start some type of relationship drama they always have to do it through Maiko. Like its so frustrating. Why can't they just let them be happy like the other couples. You have Kataang with barely any problems in their relationship. Sukka are being so cute in the comics but Maiko has to suffer? For what? I don't know what the writers are doing anymore.

PART 3. Like okay I get the break up in the Promise. They wanted Zuko to be at his lowest so they made his girlfriend break up with him. But Smoke and Shadow was supposed to be some type of resolution to their break up. It was built up for them to get back together. Mai showing she still had feelings for him in Rebound and Zuko confessing to Mai that he still misses her and wants her back. And then at the end of the comic it goes no where. Literally nothing is resolved.

PART 4. Even worse more problems are created in the way Mai is wrote in S&S. Like Mai is a already polarizing character and although I absolutely love her (she is my favorite character actually), S&S gave the people who hate her more reasons to continue the anti-mai bs. The Creators say the love Maiko so why do they continue to do this to them. The Avatar Studios further increases my anxiety because what if they mess up there too. Idk I am sorry to drop the long rant on you but I am so tired.

I can clear up your confusion about why Maiko was targeted for sabotage, though, though. Gene Yang wanted to break up or somehow mess with Kataang, according to interviews, but the Mike and the Bryan explicitly forbid it. (He also wanted to resurrect Jet. I don't think Gene Yang understands AtLA at all.) He's never commented on Sukka, that I've seen, but after the Maiko breakup there were all those weird hints that he was trying to bring Zuko and Suki together, so presumably at some point Sokka would have been dumped or just cheated on. So Gene really had it in for all the canon ships.

I know, that doesn't make me feel any better, either.

At the time of the breakup, I didn't even have a problem with the breakup. Maiko didn't get the greatest development in the cartoon, and Mai's subplot was tied entirely to her romance, so I was open to the idea of giving her an arc separate from Zuko and/or giving Maiko more focus and building it back up. But, as you've said, nothing has been done like that. I don't know if Gene Yang intended to do such a thing and just never found a way forward (hence Smoke & Shadow running place and having Mai break up again with the same terrorist boyfriend from her FCBD one-shot), or if he expected to do more Avatar comics. Perhaps he pitched a big from-the-ashes arc for Maiko, and that's what got the Mike and the Bryan's approval. But the result now is that I think it will likely never get resolved. Gene's gone. Faith Erin Hicks doesn't seem to have any interest in that subplot, and I have a hard time believing that Dark Horse would release a one-shot graphic novel devoted to cleaning up a storyline from a decade ago.

However, there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel.

While we'll never probably see how Mai and Zuko get back together, I don't have any doubt that they do. Izumi looks like Mai. I believe that the cartoons are being prioritized over tie-in material, so I really doubt that the comics are truly allowed to overwrite something established by the cartoon's ending. At some point we'll get some kind of a confirmation that Zuko did indeed marry Mai, perhaps as an aside in a Korra comic, and that will be the end of it.

It won't be worth the decade of annoyance, but it will be a victory, of a sort.

Opening up all my can of worms aren’t ya Anon lol

Sonic x Amy -- my OTP and the one I really, really hardcore ship (like seriously if you’ve ever spent like 5 seconds in my sonic tag you’d figure this out lol). Even with its flaws I adore their relationship and I’m digging Sega finally giving the ship some much appreciated love.

Silver x Blaze -- I actually consider these two my 2nd OTP after Sonamy. As awful as 06 was, I really did enjoy their friendship and it gutted me watching Silver become upset as Blaze sacrificed herself. Seeing them interact in Team Sonic Racing made me so happy.

Knuckles x Rouge -- another ship I really adore. I like how their personalities both clash and compliment each other’s and sonic x gives me all the food

Tails x Cream -- a ship that I’m lowkey on some days and highkey on others. No major, deep reasons why I ship them, I just like the idea of them getting together when they’re older and think they’d make a sweet couple together.

Shadow x Rouge -- tbh I’m more casual about this ship. I like their friendship more, but can easily see them becoming more than friends. Sega really out here giving Shadow an emotional support thief as one of his best friends.

Tails x Cosmo (Sonic X universe) -- Like, seriously, who watched season 3 and didn’t think these two kids were cute? Every time I rewatch Sonic X I’m reminded how good of a character Cosmo really was and how sweet her and Tails’s relationship grew to be until...well...you know...

Tails X Zoe (Sonic Boom universe) -- Not as big on it as other Tails ships tbh but they did have some cute moments in the show. I find it funny how in most continuities (because of the mandate) Sonic isn’t allowed to date so everyone turns to Tails for all the good romances lmao

The Red Wolf avatar x Pink Cat avatar (from Sonic Forces) -- affectionately nicknamed Tom and Ava respectively by my friend Erin. They were the promoted avatars before the game’s release so we jumped on shipping them lmao

Vector x Vanilla -- (but only when Vector gets older) While I don’t know how old Vanilla actually is (she strikes me as a young mother though if I’m being honest), but Vector’s crush on her in the Sonic X universe made me like this ship a little bit

Shadow x Tikal -- This is a crack ship I’m not gonna lie. And the only reason I even started shipping it is because of really good fanart and this one fanfic I read.

Chris Thorndike x Princess Elise -- omg this is a crack ship that i discovered when reading a fanfic a long ass time ago and i was just like holy shit THIS IS PERFECT AJDKFSDALSSDKA

Admittedly, there are some other Sonic ships that I’m okay with but don’t actively ship (such as Shadow x Amy; Knuckles x Tikal; Knuckles x Shade; Shadow x Blaze; Jet x Wave; etc). I don’t know if you’d call them meh ships because they’re just barely blips on my radar.

And there are definitely ships that I have 0 opinions about because I just don’t know anything about some of the characters (*points to Archie Sonic comics*). NoTP-wise there's really only a handful of ships I strongly dislike (not saying them because I kinda like living thanks), but for the most part I’m pretty chill with shipping in the StH fandom.

Tumblr’s Top Fandoms of 2020

It’s been a weird and often devastating year, and our social media has reflected that. Tumblr has just released its top fandoms of 2020 and it’s fascinating to see how a year of pandemic and quarantine has affected transformative fandom and broader cultural trends. In a year when almost everyone spent a lot more time at home, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most blogged about topic on the social media platform, followed by animated dramedy Steven Universe, Belgian SKAM adaptation WtFOCK, K-pop supergroup BTS, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. And, now, our chat with Brennan. (This Q&A has been edited for clarity and length.)

Den of Geek: I’ve heard you refer to the users as the Tumblr hive-mind or the orchid, whatever it is. I was just hoping you could generally talk about what the Tumblr hive-mind is to you? Which is the way of saying, who uses Tumblr generally? And how and why? If you can even extrapolate those things. Go!

Amanda Brennan: Most of our audiences is Gen Z; it’s at 48%. Our new user registration with Gen Z is even higher; I’m pretty sure it’s 60%. These are people who come to Tumblr because they love something so much they just want to share that love with people who love it as much as they do. I know that feels like a giant umbrella, but that’s the thing: Tumblr is what you make of it. If you love sports, sports Tumblr is intense hockey Tumblr, so good. If you love TV, you’ll have all of that. K-pop Tumblr, totally amazing. Furby Tumblr is off the hook and they make these incredible creations. I’ve recently gotten into Stained Glass Tumblr.

There’s layers upon layers. No matter what you love, there’s something on Tumblr for you. That’s both the easiest thing and the hardest thing about it. You have to go in being like, “Alright, I’m so into this thing, what does Tumblr have for me?” It’s not like the other social media networks, right? It’s really about what you love rather than who you know.

Yeah, I like that. I did want to ask you specifically about the process of how you track trends and how you make decisions about what to track?

We built the whole taxonomy that powers fandom metrics based on what Tumblr talks about. I’m a librarian, as you know, and I kind of reverse engineered it. My first year in review at Tumblr in 2013, they handed me a spreadsheet and they’re like, ‘OK, go to town.” So I was like, “Cool, let me pull out the threads that I see.” We really let the data tell us how to analyze it, if that makes sense. So when it comes to what we track, I have a running notebook that I’ve kept all year of the things that I’ve wanted to have in year in review.

The Witcher has been on my list since it came out. Animal Crossing has been another one. The Old Guard had a huge moment. I was just writing notes, like, “Oh, what is this thing? And we’ll keep an eye on it.” I have an amazing team. We all are into our own pieces of Tumblr. So we’ll all work together to just keep an eye on different fandoms. I don’t know if you know about Minecraft YouTuber fandom?

Yeah. I was actually listening to the latest Fansplaining last night and they mentioned it in that. I was just like, “OK, a new thing.” There’s always a new thing to learn about.

There’s always a new thing. That’s the beauty of Tumblr. It’s so fluid in fandom. You can go from one fandom to another and then you’ll see like, “Ooh, what is this thing?” I’ve got Supernatural on the brain, as who in the fandom doesn’t right now. [This interview was recorded on the day of the Supernatual series finale.] I was telling someone, the whole reason I got into Supernatural was because I saw a gif from the show on Tumblr and I was like, “What is happening? Let me go back and watch this entire series.” That’s the vibe of Tumblr, right? You see a thing and you’re like, “Oh, I need to know everything about that.”

Hmm. Yeah, for sure. I was interested in talking to you or getting your insight into how trends you saw or data you saw that were maybe tied to the very unique experience of being in the middle of a pandemic.

Yeah. I was looking back at the predictions that I had made last year and like four of those things didn’t even come out. It was just so unexpected. There’s two things that we really saw tied to the pandemic. The first was “cottagecore” as an aesthetic. It kind of touched everything because it’s soothing, it feels comfortable. In March and April in the early days, when you didn’t know what to do, you’re stuck in a forest isolation. Cottagecore has got this vibe of chosen isolation. It was very fantasy-driven and something to reach out for.

That evolved also into nostalgia. I think this year’s really big theme is nostalgia and comfort. We saw huge returns to fandoms like Twilight and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Avatar going on Netflix was such a world-breaking moment. Not only did it introduce a new, younger fandom to the show, there’s a lot of Avatar content once you get into it, but it brought people back to a younger time in their lives. Remembering and rewatching. The Avatar fandom, as you see, it’s all over all of the lists. Zuko is number 20 on all of the things on Tumblr this year. Avatar was able to redefine people’s year. Because you know what, we’re all at home, I’m going to binge Avatar. Reignite my love for this fandom.

A lot of TV too, because TV is episodic, you get lost in it. Movies had a really rough year. When we look at the movies, movies like Megamind were trending this year. That comfort movie that you go back and watch 17 times.

Yeah. I was curious about that too. The balance or proportions between older fandoms and newer fandoms, like the Avatar example. I was curious how much that changed this year? How much you thought it was tied to the pandemic? How much is tied to accessibility and things, like Avatar coming to Netflix? Do you think that is an interest in older fandoms? Or that it’s going to continue past the pandemic?

Yeah. I think another high-level theme of this year is the rejection of cringe culture. I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but I’ll tie it all back in. I think people are realizing what their values are and not being afraid to admit that they like a thing. Not caring what other people think of the things they like. Unabashedly loving the things they love. That’s why I think we do see a resurgence in these older fandoms.

Because people who may have loved them their whole lives, or may have been nervous to share that they liked it when they were younger they’re not afraid anymore. They’re like, “You know what? Twilight, it’s not that great, but I love it. This is my emotional support vampire.” Recognizing that you can be critical of something. You can see where its flaws are, but you can still love it. That duality of fandom is something that is going to persist into next year. That freedom to just like a thing, because you like it. Be able to see its flaws, but still be like, “You know what? Overall, this brings me joy and the world is melting down.”

I’m on board with that mission, that plan for 2021. I did want to ask about the role of non-English language media, especially live action stuff. Generally because I was someone who fell into The Untamed this year, but I saw that there were two SKAM remakes as well that are on the top 10. In general, have you seen over your time at Tumblr, and maybe especially in the past few years, an increase in non-English language content? Do you think that is mostly English speakers and Americans being more open to that or being able to find it easier? Or do you think it’s also an influx of people from outside the United States coming to Tumblr? Or both?

Interesting. The data that we work with is actually stripped of all user information. I don’t really have an insight into where these people are coming from. I do think that users in general are more open to content in any language. Tumblr is more interested in characters than where the story comes from. Thinking about The Untamed, it’s just such a compelling story, it doesn’t matter if you have to read subtitles.

To parallel it to something in major pop culture, Parasite. People are becoming more open to just watching content because it’s good. SKAM is really fascinating to me because the number one live action show is wtFOCK. Then, I think two years ago, 2018, the original SKAM was number one at some point. This show really transcends language barriers. It transcends geographical barriers. At the core, the story of the teenagers is just so relatable to anyone. We’ve seen lots of translation happening and not just into English. Translation of SKAM into other languages, just because people want more of these characters and their iterations, no matter what locale they’re based in. I’m waiting for some professor to have a class on it, because it’s so fascinating to me.

I also wanted to ask about how you thought the election cycle affected Tumblr this year, if there were any trends or data that you were like, “Yes, of course this is what people were doing on Tumblr this year.”

Tumblr has always had this backbone of social justice. This year, it came out stronger and in more force. No matter what fandom you were in or interests, everyone I know on Tumblr was participating in sharing social justice stuff. Even politics, if they weren’t from the US, those kinds of memes that were like, “I feel for you”. The way that fandoms do. I see your show is ending and I’m sorry.

The one thing that Tumblr really had leading up to the election was such an appreciation for the postal service. Especially Gen Z, their world is so much larger due to digital connection. Mail order, just as well as sending letters and keeping in touch with your digital friends is just as important as keeping in touch with your IRL friends. All of the artists on Tumblr, so many of them turn to mail order to replace cons. This is their livelihood. By the time the fall hit and the postal service was having all these issues, people are ready to jump in. There were the Transformers dressed like mail people.

There were all these comments like “support your postal workers,” “support the USPS.” It really boils down to the fact that we are all connected and the mail service is something in the US that connects everyone. Even overseas. Supporting these artists whose livelihood went from IRL to online and having to deal with all of this.

And the “Super Putin Election.” The confluence of those elements. I was just surfing on my personal computer and I was on Tumblr and I saw a post being like “Destiel’s canon.” I’m like, “Excuse me?” I immediately texted my team. I was like, “Open up your work computers, let’s go.”

It’s time.

We all signed on trying to figure out what’s going on and watching the numbers. That, to me, is thrilling. I said this to someone else, but it felt like the night of The Dress. To have that moment where everyone on the internet is feeling the energy. The things that kept getting layered on top of it. Putin and Sherlock and all the anime mysteries. It was breakneck speed, and it was really thrilling just to be in that moment, and so Tumblr.

I did want to ask you about an increase in animated fandom and potentially anime fandom. A lot of these things I’m anecdotally or just observing things in my own little corner of the internet. It just seems like animation and anime, probably at least partially because Netflix has accumulated a much larger anime collection and seems to be investing in these sorts of things. Have you seen that increase? Could you talk about it, if so?

It plays into what we were talking about earlier, twofold. That nostalgia vibe, the late nineties anime vibe, that art style. Also your comfort zone and being open to more stuff just because it’s good. Not worrying about reading subtitles and stuff like that. But anime in general had a huge year. Haikyū!! ending also transposed into other fandoms because that moment of the final panels, it brings people together. People being so excited to see this massive thing come to a close. You might not be familiar with Haikyū!! in general, but you’ll see the fanart and be like, “Oh, I feel that.” It’s the emotion of it.

The popularity of Avatar did also open people’s doors to like, “Oh, well, what else can I watch? What else do I want to learn about”? Boku No Hero was consistently on our Week In Review every week. BEASTARS is another Netflix anime that’s at the top. Then Mo Dao Zu Shi, thinking about The Untamed, the story of Mo Dao Zu Shi is so fascinating. I don’t think I can name another piece of content that has that storyline. People are just ready to take it all on.

I did want to ask you, I think you’ve probably talked about some of these already, but what were some of the biggest fandom moments for you on Tumblr this year?

Oh boy. So many things going canon. Catradora was a huge, huge moment. I cried watching that. The Witcher, Jaskier, introducing this whole new world to Henry Cavill. I saw a post yesterday that was like once Superman was goth, a lot more people realize that he’s hot. Repurposing and looking at things in a new way. Among Us, so huge. There is a user who is doing a comic about White and Pink being in love. She’s giving them lore. She’s giving them backstory, personalities. It is amazing.

Unus Annus, I am not very into streamers, but I’ve caught some of those videos. When they had their final stream, I was tuning in. I was like, “Are you really going to delete the channel?” Then they did. Just watching the fans have that moment, even though I am not in that fandom, it was wonderful so meaningful.

Harry Potter being taken by the fans. Fans own Harry Potter now, and that’s what matters. The Old Guard also came out of nowhere and really blew Tumblr away. The Immortal Husbands. I love that ship. I’ve got to touch on almost all of the places, MCR, My Chemical Romance. Those fans have woken up and they didn’t get their tour, but they will. They’re not going to sleep until they do.

Because we maybe all have Supernatural on the brain, to a certain extent. I’m just curious how you think, that show’s been on for 15 years. The fandom has gone through literal generations. How do you think the fandom is going to change?

There’s always going to be a supernatural gif for everything. People will continue gifing it. It’s going to surpass what it is and it’s going to become that comfort show. This is a personal anecdote, but when I go to the dentist, every single time supernatural is on. It’s just like, “Oh, I get to watch my boys while I’m getting my teeth cleaned. That’s good.” It’s always going to be there. It’s always going to be there for people when they need it the most. We’re going to see a lot more fan creations. People love these boys, men now they’re adults. People love these characters. I haven’t watched this season. I am going to watch the finale tonight. I’m going in almost cold. I know that a lot of fan favorites have returned. My prediction for Supernatural fandom going forward is seeing these side stories come through in fanfiction even more than they already do. Lots more Charlie. That’s personal of mine because I love her.

I don’t think you’re alone in this.

Yeah. Who doesn’t love Charlie? Seeing these smaller characters come out and just shine in their own fan works, more so than the world might’ve provided them in canon.

It feels dangerous to make fandom predictions based on what happened this year, but if you have any predictions and or hopes for the coming year in terms of Tumblr and fandom?

Where we’re at now and going forward, it’s all about true authenticity. Screw what people think. We’re rejecting our old ways of thinking. We’re about flipping perspectives and forgetting what you thought was important in exchange for what you truly love. 2020 has helped us all figure out what our values at our core are. It’s about choosing something that makes you happy, that supports you, and your people. Choosing the happiness of those around you and making sure that you’re fighting for the goodness in life. Which sounds really sugar sweet, but one of the things, again, that I love about Tumblr is it is about putting people first based on the things they love. That’s what I see happening.

THE PLATONIC SHIP MEME: (aka the best new thing!)

Which one is the responsible one and which is known to be reckless? How do they deal with situations the reckless get caught up in?

Oh man, I mean… they’re both kind of wild??? Like to do dumb things and get yelled at by their partners how lovely. But in the context between the two of them, I do believe Nate is one step above John in terms of being responsible as he owns the ability to think before he acts omg. Nate has never given John an earful though, as they sort of tend to flip the situation on its head and instead it becomes a long running joke.

Any personal memes or jokes in between them?

Plenty! Most of it would be gamer related, stuff they come up with at 2 a.m whilst co-oping some random stuff they found on steam or on PlayStation network. They’re the type of guys who make their avatars ridiculous and probs have staple names they often go with. It wouldn’t even surprise me if those names are each other’s caller IDs. Then there’s the case of their brotp name ahem. I can’t fully remember what they were talking about at the time, but it’s a forever running joke.

Is any of them prone to throw around compliments like a breeze? How does the other react?

Oh, yes indeed! I would even say both are? Nate, being a teacher, has that coming naturally and John is overall the type who just wants to spread some joy and watch his friends be happy. (They get hella sappy whilst drunk okay and can spend a good half hour just telling each other they’re beautiful and loved.)

Who likes hugs and connection the most?

Once again: both. They’re bros. Real bros hug!

How about endearing or ridiculous nicknames? Is there a story behind them?

I mean, besides what’s up there I could also kind of see them call each other Alpha and Beta for some reason? Just these random code names they made up during another late night session. Sometimes they like to pretend they’re communicating over a walkie-talkie and thus refer to these nicknames.

Do they trust each other with deep secrets and thoughts?

I would say they do? They at least have it in them to sit down and talk about things, even if John’s attention span isn’t the overall greatest. They mean a lot to one another and that’s the tea for today.

Do they share a deep secret together?

However, I don’t think they’re sitting on something no one else wouldn’t already be aware of. The worst secret is probably John’s… backstory and you know… his old ways of wrecking lives but haha I feel like that secret belongs to Erin and Kenna. He’s moved on.

Who would win in a roast? How about a prank war?

Ohhh I think John could come on top during a prank war, due to his head being in constant move and having the speed to excecute the idea – mostly. He’s a creative fella and, not to lie, a little machevious when times call for it. Nate seem more able to roast people and would have more jabs against John lbr.

How do they show each other support? (Heartbreaks, loss, dreams, achievements, etc.)

The bros are with each other through thick and thin! I mean, even if Nate betrayed John by moving to another country and dumped him for another, he will forever push Nate in his needs and wants – with Nate being much the same. John probably even wish he could have done more after Nate’s break-up with Eileen but recognizes that sometimes all you need is a change of pace. Whatever makes the other happy is the key! They know what to do during most situations.

What would a typical hangout look like? Do they share some common activities?

Their typical hangouts are the chill kind, very much a basic bro one where they kind of just meet up somewhere and do whatever the hell they feel like. They’ll go bar jumping or spend a whole day camping inside, playing some new release they’ve anticipated for months now! They won’t be seen for at least 24 hours.

If they do not already live together, what would their lives as roommates look like? Do they split chores or is one more prone to take control whilst the other slack around?

They do not live together but John might as well pack his bags and move to Canada as well, like Nate will just come home one day and find John raiding his fridge or having a bath. It’s inescapable! But omggg neither is really messy, however John’s ADHD makes it hard for him to prioritize tasks so Nate would definitely have to push him on to have him remember the basics of surviving – sometimes to even turn off his games and go have something to eat. They would split their chores, or try to at least, but work do keep them busy and their place could end up rather messy for a month or so with just the general cleaning to make sure they don’t trip over their mail. They would throw the dopest of parties thoooo!

Would they ever adopt a pet together? If yes, what kind?

Why can I see them finding some hurt animal along the road one day and decide it’s their baby now and very much treat it as such while they nurse it beack to health?? Don’t know what it would be, we can headcanon that together.

If either suddenly found themselves caring for a child but lacked the support to properly aid for them, how would the other react, or chose to deal with the situation?

Much like the finding a wounded animal and dubbing it their child, I feel they’d end up in a similar situation here as well? They’d take turns with babysitting, slowly train the child to co-op with them, take them out on activities or even pick up from daycare etc. People would mistake them for a rainbow family, even if they’re just two bros caring for a little one. It’d be a sadface moment when the one with the kid ends up finding a partner (as they don’t have one yet in this scenario) as they’d become the proper parent instead but I also think they’d still be equally as involved and ready to jump the boat if needed!

What’s a memory they both hold dear?

I’m just gonna say it: these two visits comic con every damn year and it’s one of few events they plan for a year in advance (so basically on their way home from comic con) and their first ever visit is one of their most treasured ones. It consisted of a road trip to San Diego with plenty of stops along the way, making sure they got the best out of it. Sadly, they didn’t cosplay, as they were more about experiencing the magic first time around, but has since done some ‘couple’ cosplays from various games. Meeting new people who are nothing but massive nerds, watching other cosplays, buying merch... yeah not much can beat the feeling of that. (John has even had some run in from people who watch the shows he co-writes for these days and some that have read his one and only published book. They all end up hanging out for a while and it’s always a blast.)

SURPRISE IT’S UPDATE TIME! It’s so bizarre being writing this at the same time Larry is because there’s like this weird overlap, we’re like ships passing in the night he’s finally caught up to my time and now is about to pass me.

Anyway, there’s some lovely art in here and a reference to a blog that actually exists, @ask-potoo-firestar. Art belongs to @lavendersongs, thank you for your amazing contribution to the Warrior Cats fandom and for giving me permission to include references to it in this fanfic.

Larry curls up deeper under his blankets.

He covers his head with his pillow.

Fine, he’ll crawl out of his nest and see what had happened, maybe Nick was in trouble again, that Godot guy seemed to have a grudge against him for something.

Larry almost fires something back before thinking better of it, Nick had far too many people around him die to joke about that.

Yeah I’m fine, and you usually don’t see me for awhile.

Larry hesitates before deciding to just call Nick. The phone rings a few times before Nick answers.

“Hey Larry,” he greets him, Larry can hear voices in the background, he thinks one is Maya, the other is young and high so probably Pearl.

“Hey Nick,” Larry runs a hand over his jaw, aw gross he’d ended up with that scraggly beard, he never looked good with that, he needed to go shave, “you in a crisis?”

“No?” Nick has the gall to sound offended, “I do not only call you during crisises!”

“Mmm might wanna check you phone bill there Nicky Boy,” Larry teases him, his voice is rough, he should haul himself out of bed and start putting himself back together.

“You want to talk about having a crisis you sound like you’ve been on a bender,” Nick fires back, Larry frowned and groused at him.

“Don’t be an ass Nick, I’ve been taking a week off, chilling and relaxing before I remake myself! You called while I’m still in the cocoon man!”

“That metaphor started strong but you took it somewhere very weird,” Nick replies, Larry laughs roughly.

“Alright, alright, you’re the one who texted me,” Larry points out, wrapping his blanket around him like a cloak to hide his shame from the world and stay warm from the chillier October day. He crossed to his laptop to open his resume, he’d need to update it and he might as well do that while chatting with Nick rather than sit around feeling shitty about it.

He chats with Nick, and Maya and Pearl when they demand a chance to chat with him. He interrogate Nick, or tries, but he doesn’t know what’s up with Godot either, other than he’s got one hell of a caffeine addiction, came out of nowhere and claims to be from hell.

Given half the stories Larry’s heard about Nick’s cases he’s tempted to believe it.

“Maybe you ought to have an exorcism performed,” he teases, he’s on speaker phone now and he’s sure they can hear him typing away as he adds his latest job to the long master list of jobs he’s held, “Maya, Pearl, can you do that?”

“I’d have to exorcise the entire Prosocution’s office!” Maya bemoans, Larry grins as she outlines everything she’d need to do to Nick.

“Maybe you should, it sounds like it has a few too many demons over there even before this guy,” Larry muses, saving his resume and opening Fanfiction.net. His stomach drops and his jokes trail off. There’s several messages from XxWolfDragonxX. Shit, he’d just dropped off the map after talking to the guy daily.

He immediately types a response, assuring the guy some stuff just came up, he got fired from work, etc. but he’s doing alright. He misses a question Nick asked him until he repeats his name.

“Larry.”

“Sorry, what?” He tosses the message to WolfDragon off, his friend is probably off work it’s well after six for him.

“I asked what were you typing?”

Larry glances at his messages and then at his minimized programs. “My resume.”

He refreshed FF.net and got a message from WolfDragon.

Man it’s fine, life happens! It’s just good to hear from you again. I’m sorry for all the shit that keeps happening to you.

Again I’m so sorry, and yeah, it’s just been that kind of year.

Do you have a discord? I have something to show you but I don’t think ff.net will send it.

Oh? Uh yeah actually, one second let me find my ID number.

It takes him longer than he should be tosses the information to Wolfdragon. After a moment he gets a friend request on Discord, from a XxWolfDrgonxX surprising absolutely no one. The avatar is a gray anime wolf with yellow eyes snarling, which also doesn’t surprise Larry though he wonders where it’s from.

However he’s still on the phone with Nick, so he accepts it and turns away from the computer, “so what are you all up to asides from calling me?” He hears Pearl giggle and Maya’s voice in the background, they’re moving away, “how are they Nick?”

“They’re good,” Nick sounds happy and Larry can’t help but hurt even as he’s happy for him.

“We’re probably going to do a few things today before they have to head back,” Nick’s chair creaks audibly, “do you have plans for Halloween?”

“Uh, not really?”

“Do you want to come over to the office and hand out candy with me?”

“People come to your office for candy?”

“Surprisingly yes,” Nick sounds equally baffled by this fact, “so, are you in?”

“Do you want me to bring anything?” Larry asks, glancing at his Discord occasionally, where he can see WolfDragon typing. “Beer, Soda, popcorn and terrible horror movies?”

“Popcorn and let’s go with lighthearted movies,” Nick suggests, and Larry wonders if Pearl will be there. He’ll bring soda then, just in case. That or Nick’s gotten to be more of a scaredy-cat since their last Halloween movie festival.

“Have you seen that one cartoon thing that everyone raves about?” Larry’s seen so much art for it for Inktober so he needs to actually sit down and watch the show obviously is what that means.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Okay, I’ll find it, it’s some kids show but everyone who’s seen it loved it,” Larry sends a quick message to WolfDragon while Nick talks.

I want to hate it but I’m laughing too hard, it’s amazing.

“Larry are you okay?” Nick asks, and Larry can’t answer, he’s wheezing at the damn Potoo Firestar, he cannot believe WolfDragon got his discord just to send him this, and that it’s somehow made him feel so much better.

“Yeah, yeah I’m fine,” he wheezes, and clicks the link that WolfDragon sends him to this person’s blog, “just saw something funny.”

He hops off the phone with Nick promising to see him on Halloween and bring candy and popcorn and the cartoon he’s seen everyone drawing if he could just remember the name.

He spends the next hour teasing WolfDragon on Discord for his avatar and username, all the while scrolling through this blog, which WolfDragon has dubbed “the only pure Warrior Cats blog”.

It doesn’t take long for him to agree though he does have a few questions.

So I miss all the discourse but I also miss blogs like this?

Larry grins and tells him he hopes he has a good evening. He needs to clean himself up and try and rejoin society.

He showers, shaves, and pulls himself together. He also draws Wolf as a Potoo and sends that back to WolfDragon which is obviously loved, if the fact he turns his avatar into it was any indication.

Larry spends Halloween crashing on Nick’s couch, Maya and Nick fighting over candy while he snags some and occasionally slips a piece or two to Pearl. The kid’s clever and smiles shyly at him every time he does so.

They do settle down to watch the cartoon though Maya grumbles at points about how she wanted to watch the Steel Samurai Halloween Special.

They enjoy Over the Garden Wall though, even if it sends the girls diving to hide behind Nick at one point from the Beast. He lets Nick comfort, while he cleans up some of the trash into the popcorn bowl which he sets to the side, making sure it will not be grabbed by mistake by someone hurrying to give candy to trick-or-treaters.

He’s honestly astonished at the number that turn up at the office, until Nick says he thinks Mia used to hand the candy out, which makes sense. It’s tradition now. And Nick must’ve gotten paid because he’s got the good candy and he’s letting kids take handfuls.

He doesn’t touch that stuff only the bag Nick bought for them to share and the stuff he traded Pearl for because she didn’t like nuts in her candy. Said they got stuck in her teeth which Larry felt was a valid reason to not like them.

He tells himself that means they have protein as he pops a handful in his mouth. While Nick’s busy with some teens at the door and Maya’s tucking Pearl in on the couch he sends a message to WolfDragon.

“Texting a girlfriend?” Maya’s teasing voice made him jump, she wasn’t peering over his shoulder yet but she might’ve been. She might’ve seen the teasing and… no, she was looking at his face.

“Nah, just a friend,” he shoves his phone back into his pocket, she and Nick are both staring at him intensely now, he’s not sure why but they are.

He swears he sees Nick counting to three but he’s not sure why that happens either. He and Maya share a look, and Larry feels himself tense more.

He looks to Nick, whose eyes pierce him as he looks at Larry, “I thought you said you were taking a break from dating.”

“I am!” Larry insists, careful to keep his voice low, glancing to Pearl because however much they want to interrogate him he knows they’ll kill him if he wakes her.

Nick and Maya look confused again but it’s not his fault they can’t accept that he’s just friends with some people. He’s not even into guys anyway!

He shakes his head and grins at them, “glad to hear you think I have that much game though Nick.”

Maya smothers a laugh, while the edge flows out of Nick’s eyes and a smile takes its place, “you keep getting girls to date you somehow.”

“It’s that I have an artist’s soul,” Larry pulls himself up and rests his hand over his chest, grinning at the two of them.

“I went to art school too you know,” Nick points out, relaxing and smiling.

“And who taught you all those tricks for backgrounds?” Larry fires back, he’s always been the better artist for backgrounds and forms, Nick just had more practice with human anatomy. Nick huffs and shakes his head.

“I showed you how to draw men’s jawlines, ‘cause you only paid attention when the model was female-”

“Nick I’ve accepted my heterosexuality and horndog ways will be my downfall,” he fires back which obviously takes his friend by surprise, Maya too, “hey, I can have some self-awareness you know.” He glances over at Maya, “Nick, Edgey and I are allowed the common sense of one person but we have to share and Edgey came back and took it all from Nick.”

“Excuse me?” Nick looks so genuinely offended and Larry laughs, shoulders shaking.

“You took some back, TSA wouldn’t let him take it all with him.”

Maya’s grinning and apparently not taking sides as he and Nick begin to playfully jab at each other about who has more common sense, and it’s nice to be able to talk about Edgey again without Nick’s anger, to have him laugh as he talks and recounts stories from elementary school to Maya is worth the few bits of his dirty laundry that Nick airs.

They end up on the other couch, Maya curled up on Nick’s one side, Larry on the other; with jackets draped over themselves as make shift blankets.

“Larry?”

“Yeah Nick?”

“Who were you texting earlier,” Nick’s not judgmental now but he is obviously curious, maybe hoping that in his exhaustion Larry will let something slip.

And he does.

“He’s a guy I met online, we talk about like books and stuff. You wouldn’t understand, you nerdy lawyer.”

Nick laughs softly as Larry slumps against him, “that so?”

“It is,” Larry lays his head back against Nick’s shoulder, “very so.”

They wake up in various states of aching and trying to hide it, all of them trying to deny they’re getting old while Pearl buzzes around the office. Larry wonders briefly if she’s gotten into the Halloween candy for breakfast.

He checks his phone and there’s a few messages from WolfDragon.

You still there?

Don’t eat too much candy, aren’t you doing NaNoWriMo this year?

Larry only barely manages not to curse in front of Pearl as he realizes that he’s going to have to write his first 1667 words with one hell of a crick in his neck.

But I shouldn’t need to put a disclaimer every time reminding people that I recognize that Vlad, or most villains, is a PoS in canon. People can change too, plus in that universe he doesn’t do the whole cloning thing bc I genuinely do not care for Dani and I always thought that was a weird direction to go in (plus...why did he just....not clone maddie...?). People who will genuinely call someone a Vlad Apologist are likely the same people who would start up discourse about Zuko if Avatar was a new series. You’re not an apologist for shipping villains with anyone...unless you’re like, shipping them with characters they explicitly abused or something.

Mary Sues are “ew cringe” culture and it’s 2020 my dude, we’re past that. Make Fan Characters, make full-on Mary Sues, make Self-Inserts, who gives a fuck, I have both OCs and Self-Inserts, though Erin is the former and not the latter. But as far as I know from an old critique from ye olde “DPOC Leaders” back in the day she didn’t seem like one from the info I gave them. Plus I don’t have Vlad immediately fawning over her, it’s a slow burn from his end bc dude needs to get the hell over his creepy obsession with Maddie. And therapy.

TUE shows he’s possible of remorse and that his friendship with Jack isn’t all lost, plus evidence in the show implies that they were friends before meeting Maddie, which means Vlad genuinely cared for him at one point. I want to explore that potential while also exploring him in a normal relationship bc I like him.

It’s 2020 and we ignore canon when we want as long as we’re not demonizing female characters or w/e. If S*suS*ku stans can ignore important parts of their ship’s shit bc it doesn’t make them look good and they still became canon in the end, anything is fair game imo. Plus in all my OC’s universes Grey Ghost is canon :^) (except the one where I made DxS kids cause yeah, parents.)

Shipping Just Sucks For Me

I’m going to share with you all here on Tumblr a little bit of frustration I have when it comes to enjoying whatever fictional dramas I do. Be they TV shows or some film franchise, it always seems to be the same.

I didn’t know the term “shipping” even existed until about Summer 2004 when I started frequenting some L Word message boards. It was a bit of internet language I wasn’t familiar with. From there I was introduced to concepts like ship names, names based on whatever pairings, romantically or otherwise from some show or movie. I remember an early favorite of mine was a friendship based one from TLW called AlShaDane, based on a trio of friends, Alice Pieszecki, Shane MacCutcheon, and Dana Fairbanks. There was Dana/Lara and when that fell through, there was Alice/Dana aka Danish.

For TLW, the big one and the one that still persists to something else I was introduced to in 2004, FanFic was TiBette, Bette/Tina. That was the first truly fierce, “ride or die” ship fandom I can recall and it’s still rather fierce.

Eventually I learned what I could of the terminology so I could apply it to my own fandom. The L Word aka TLW was important in teaching me a lot of stuff I wasn’t familiar with, but also teaching something else important and that’s shipping disappointment, also fandom disappointment.

TLW prepared me to deal with a lot of bullshit I’ve noticed when it comes to the fandoms I represent. Dana Fairbanks was my favorite character. She had the most intriguing story overall as it concerned the main characters. Naturally, she’s the one the writers decided to kill off in Season 3 while she was already in the middle of a gripping enough storyline involving herself, Alice, and Lara. I had also become a fan of the Shane/Carmen pairing and of course that died at the end of Season 3.

I remember writing the first (and only successful) fanfic based on the trauma that I and some other fans had dealt with as a result of that season. I’ve tried here and there to write some stuff since, but I’m fucking horrible at writing.

By the time TLW ended in 2009, it felt like a mercy killing and it would be a while before I was able to watch anything though I should point out I did watch FlashForward for the freak show effect of the plot.

2013 was when I finally started opening back up to watching any shows again, starting with Agents of SHIELD and The Blacklist. Eventually I would catch up on some other shows I eventually became interested. In 2015, Supergirl would burst on the scene and that show quickly went from curiosity to my favorite show, the reason why episodic TV was worth it. I became a big fan of the Danvers sisters and how they dealt with the growing pains of Kara growing into being a superhero and the support and love from Alex who had always been there for her since Kara showed up at the Danvers’ doorstep.

Unfortunately, Supergirl had to deal with CBS during Season 1, but thankfully the show as able to move over to the CW where I figured things might open up. I admit, my initial reaction to Maggie showing up had me at “Huh?” Then I remembered, it probably wasn’t likely Maggie was gonna show up on Gotham and date the future Batwoman who herself has yet to appear on that show.

Then Season 2 came along and Alex and Maggie started interacting. There was an instant chemistry to it. Sanvers wasn’t like Olicity where I figured “Yeah I like it, but understand Oliver’s got that “destined loner” thing going against him (see: MacCutcheon, Shane). Like I said, TLW prepared me for this shit.

Sure there’s Barry/Iris, but that’s cheating as OF COURSE they’re supposed to be together. Then Sanvers happened. Cue the Sigma song with Rita Ora, “Coming Home” and that first kiss. It was Dana/Lara all over again for me. I remember how that one ended. Again, that show prepared me.

Yet still, here we are in 2017 and this amazing story with an amazing pairing of characters featuring actors with chemistry and empathy for the situation their characters are in yet we’re on the verge of the oil slick into the ravine, assuming it’s not there already.

Disappointment is disappointment and sure a good fanfic doesn’t hurt when it comes to distractions, but that can only get so far. Heck at one point last year I attempted (and failed) to write some story where not only were Jessica Jones and Felicity Smoak were a couple, but Supergirl and Quake were also one, because just the idea of that impossible pairing was too good to pass up without at least giving it a shot.

Again though, it’s fanfic. Anything may go there, but the writers of the official stuff still helm the controls. Creative and the network dictate what they can with the official narrative and there’s not much we can do about it. Based on my avatar as of this writing, it’s apparent that I’m a big Holtzbert fan as well, based on Jillian Holtzmann and Erin Gilbert from Ghostbusters (2016), my favorite of the Gb films. Sadly, I don’t think that will ever be successfully addressed either in a sequel that might not ever happen to the comic adaptation that currently gets to form the narrative, courtesy of IDW Publishing.

Which brings me back to Sanvers. Here’s what the current state of Supergirl has done to me. Keep in mind, this is still my favorite show, but I’ve gone from watching the show as it airs to DVR’ing it for later to delaying watching it and the other shows I’m into. I’m currently 2 weeks behind and this Monday it might be 3. I’m still keeping up thanks to social media, but it sure does make me feel apprehensive about hitting Play.

Everything is veering towards an inevitable breakup and I’m none too pleased about this. I get that Floriana Lima, who plays Maggie is up for checking out some other gigs while she can and that’s fine. I get that Creative is more interested in teasing the Supercorp (Kara/Lena) fans while shoehorning Karamel (Kara/Mon-El) in even when they’re not together.

Don’t get me wrong Karamelers, I’m not anti-Karamel necessarily. I think they’re good together. It’s just not something I feel strongly about either way. I love that Team Karamel is ride or die for their favorite couple. I dig that. I also dig Team Supercorp and they’re undying faith in a concept no doubt feel should be given a chance. I know that feeling well. Unfortunately, I also know what it’s like to be disappointed at such a chance not being taken.

I don’t like feeling strongly about ships. Again, I learned from TLW that’s a quick access point to resentment toward strangers trying to write their narrative. With the exception of some likes or whatnot on social media I’ve tried keeping all this in check, but I admit it’s getting harder to do that. There’s this level of bile building up, a level that I haven’t felt since Losing the Light on March 12, 2006. Trust me when I say I was not particularly pleasant that night.

If/when the big Sanvers breakup happens on Sg, I’ll likely find out about it before I get around to watching it and it’s still gonna suck.

These people have lives.

These people have jobs to do.

These people are just trying to tell some story the best they can.

That’s me trying to remind myself to be rational. That’s me trying to remind myself that ultimately this is fictional bullshit that should have no effect on my or anyone else’s life.

Then I remember how wrong I am. Then I remember the families who shared their stories about how the Danvers sisters dynamic was huge for them, especially those with a birthed child and one adopted. Then I remember the past year of reading just how powerful Alex’s coming out and the relationship with Maggie became instrumental in their lives. I remember thinking to myself “Wow” when it came to others struggling to come out and struggling with acceptance, struggling with all of these real life issues that Chyler Leigh has been able to provide her acting prowess to as Alex and how meaningful the Alex/Maggie relationship became.

This wasn’t just some TiBette shit where people simply loved the chemistry in everything Jennifer Beals (Bette) and Laurel Holloman (Tina) brought to the table in making the rollercoaster ride of that relationship work on screen. It wasn’t just about how natural they made it look, how organic it came off as. Sanvers wasn’t just some crazy idea worth checking. We weren’t interested in being baited. We weren’t interested in Sg Creative declaring, “hey let’s try a lesbian thing on here and see how it goes.” As the SEC football fans and marketing puts it, “it just means more.” We had no interest in Sanvers being some kind of exploitation project to attract the GLAAD viewers. For many of us it became personal, deeply personal. I have a bad feeling that once all this plays out the way it’s apparently going to, that by the time they’re able to resolve it, it’s going to be too late. When fans declare that “Sanvers is my endgame,” they’re not fucking kidding. Something to understand about LGBTQ viewers, myself representing the “B” side to that. We don’t like being dicked around. We don’t have time for it. We don’t have to be baited and we’re not interested in being thrown a damn scrap here and there.

Whether Sg Creative meant it, they tapped into something that’s become meaningful for many of us. For me it’s idealism mixed with some realism, which I realize is a bit crazy as it comes to a show about a flying white lady alien who among her superpowers is being able to do all that fighting and not get a single run in those tights.

Alex/Maggie is getting into Dana Fairbanks territory. It’s getting into Losing the Light territory. As much as creative has a right to tell their stories as best they can, I and other Sanvers supporters have a right to not be happy about it and be rather vocal about it.

I won’t allow for any ship to be my endgame. I just won’t. That said, even with the now apprehensive viewing, there’s going to be that disappointment. The previous decade, TLW made me realize that I was more of a fan for what the show could be than what it was. Supergirl with all those powers and abilities is going to wind up being the same. That just sucks.

Sanvers matters. Sanvers fans should also matter.

1. Talk about the first ship you ever had.

The first ship I remember having is actually Jyoumi if you can believe it. I don’t know why this is because this was before I even knew what shipping was, let alone being one. Still, their personalities just always meshed well with me, and I think if they really wanted to, they could have made Mimi and Joe work out. I mean, they go off by themselves for a time in Adventure, and they had at least one other episode prior to that with Scorpiomon, so it could worked out.

2. Talk about three of the most important ships throughout your life.

Pokeshipping, for sure, despite me not really getting into it for about a year or two after the series had begun. This was one of the ships that got me into shipping in the first place, but it also was one of the first times I really remember seeing a friendship grow and develop into something good. Ash and Misty did not start off on the right foot, but over the course of Kanto they get over their initial misgivings about one another, and looking back, it was actually decently done for a show that was lowkey part of a marketing tactic. The Orange Islands arc highlights everything that’s great about these two honestly, and even into Hoenn. you can tell just how much they mean to one another. They’re probably one of the few examples of a bickering couple in fiction that wasn’t completely ruined by the show or the fandom, and I just have a lot of attachment to these two since it was the first time I had really seen a friendship like theirs develop. (I was three when Pokémon came out in America, and some of my earliest memories of T.V. came from Pokémon, so context.)

Taiora is definitely one as it’s probably what got me into looking seriously into fanfiction. It was more of a thing I knew about prior to looking for Taiora stories. Taiora is also how I found Tumblr, strangely enough. At risk of this sounding too good to be true or something like that, I found both yours and Erin’s blogs because of Taiora. You two trading headcanons in the posts is what attracted me, not to Tumblr because this site is shit, but to like put myself out there and follow you. This is so cheesy, but in some ways I don’t regret that?

I can’t really think of a third ship that’s super important to me. I have ships I like and all, but I don’t really have many that are like, life-changingly important or anything. I guess maybe Sokka and Suki if only because I really liked their development and while it wasn’t something I was expecting going into Avatar, they work really well together and Suki was vital to Sokka’s character growth. I don’t really have much else to say. Whoops.

4. What’s your current NOTP?

Sasu////Saku. I could rant about how much I don’t like this ship until the cows come home, but I’m not. I will spare y’all for now.

16. Talk about a ship you initially disliked.

Alright, confession time. I actually did not like NaruSaku at all at first. Both of them were just so terrible and obnoxious to one another that it completely rubbed me the wrong way. I think I started to at least be interested by the idea when Shippuden first came out, before both Sasuke and Hinata were reintroduced. Their interactions early in Shippuden were great, though it’s a shame they honestly plateau as far as it goes for pretty much the rest of the series. While I don’t ship it nearly as much due to the godawful fandom, NaruSaku does at least have a place in my heart.

20. Talk about a ship you feel alone in shipping.

This is sort of weird, but sometimes I feel alone when it comes to shipping Koumi. Despite having a decent-sized fandom now, it wasn’t always that way, and I feel like Tri might end up doing more harm than good for the ship. We’ll see, but I’m nervous about where it will go from here.

Also, my ships for Powerpuff Girls Z, but Powerpuff Girls Z is not super popular anyway, and I have personal attachment reasons as to why I like the series. Also, I don’t want to put that on my blog as I kind of made Tumblr to have a place where I don’t talk about the series if that makes any sense.

And finally, LeeSaku needs more love, and I will take every opportunity to say that.

22. Which of your ships have the best chemistry?

Choosing only one? I can’t. I’ll choose two. Oh, God. I really want to say TodoMomo has good chemistry as just being friends. Like, their friendship is so good, so just imagine what a relationship between the two could be like. I’d say more, but spoilers for either people just getting into the series or anime-only fans. (This might be under a read more, but I still don’t want to spoil what comes from these two.)

I, and this might be controversial at least on my dashboard, also think NaruHina has more chemistry than is recognized. These two are always propping each other up and being supportive of one another. They inspire change in one another, good change at that. Hinata has become a stronger person because of Naruto, while Naruto has someone who can pull him in if need be because Naruto needs someone who can balance him out and reign him in if he is too much. (Not sure if that made sense.)

24. Do you mostly ship canon pairings?

Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. Some things I get lucky with and my ships end up canon, like with some of my Naruto ships or my ALTA ships. Other times, all of my ships end up being not canon, like pretty much all of my Digimon ships. I don’t ship things just because their canon. I ship things because I like their interactions or potential or development. I feel like just shipping something because it’s canon is kind of tacky and canon could make a ship break up and you’d just come off as a fairweather fan. That’s just how I feel about this.
