Since I'm lore dumping, here's some secret lore from the Gothicverse that I never got to explore in depth.

What is a Misery? To the unknowledgable, they may seem like shape shifters, but they actually use psychic illusion! They're always in their monster form, and distort your perception to appear more human. Using their illusion is costly and exhausting to them, so they don't usually fully infiltrate human society and drop their illusion once it's time to attack.

Their reverberating voice is a result of their psychic powers invading your mind. When they eat you, they also eat your memories and use them to create better illusions to seem more human.

Miseries typically only live less than five years, but they reproduce quickly. They spawn from underground Mycelium networks when it's unusually damp or foggy in an area where the Mycelium has spread. When they're born, they come with a set of pre-developed langauge and identities, that's why they look like siblings and so many of them have the same first name.

All the Miseries named "Jack" originate from the same Mycelium, but aren't loyal to one another and will attack and decieve one another when competing for the same prey.

They're called Miseries because they lure their prey into isolation by crying. They also stream tears from their faces constantly when their true form is revealed. When attacking and killing they make vocalizations oddly similar to human weeping, even though they are thoroughly enjoying themselves.

What is really interesting about relating to fictional characters is the feeling you get when analytical, logical, and critical discussion is opened about them.

For example, I relate heavily to Albus from Bastard Warrior, but there are certain traits that are imperative to his character that separate us. Thus, making discussion on his flaws easier and encouraged.

Similarly, I heavily relate to Raven, specifically in Neon Wings, but there are less traits critical to Raven’s character that separates us. (Mostly because she is a listener character and thats an important aspect to characterization) Everything that woman did, I understood, viscerally.

Yeah, she did some cringe fail things like have a mental breakdown in public (could never), but all of her actions were logical, executable, and understandable. TO ME.

Then, when discussion is opened about her character, behavior, and actions, I began to realize that her character has more flaws than I initially observed.

This is most notably seen in @jacks347 writing on Raven. She asserts that Raven is a great character, but a shit person. This analysis, while harsh, is correct. This is further supported by the creator of Raven, @escapedaudios. He also asserts that Raven’s trauma leads her to unfairly treat those around her.

Now this is all fine and good. So whats the problem?

Raven and I share a litany of experiences and traits, and seeing how people react to her actions is extremely intriguing.

It is almost like hearing people talk about you right in front of you.

Now is this a problem of using art for escapism (no pun intended) and placing myself in fictional stories to distract myself from the world?

Probably, but thats literally what the medium of Audio Roleplay is made for.

In short, it opens my mind to my actions and my own issues, and how one might approach rectifying the hurt you bestow on other people.

Just like Raven, I have an overwhelming urge to run away when something bad occurs, but she learns to appreciate those around her and heal for, not only herself, but for those she loves.

And that’s pretty cool.

TL;DR

People being critical of Raven from Neon Wings hurt my feelings a little bit, but it allowed me to assess my own actions and how I affect the people close to me.

(I have issues projecting myself onto characters and then separating them again)

And thats what is so cool about art.

A censored version of Nu: Carnival is coming to the app store... Which is not good

When this was first brought to my attention, I honestly didn't believe it at first. I mean, why would I? Nu: Carnival has advertised itself as an adult-only game since it's release. I rarely go on Twitter since it's a total shithole, but that's how I found out that the rumors were true. Nu: Carnival - Bliss, they're calling it. The overall plot, events, and gameplay will be the same. But many crucial changes will be done to the dialogue, CG, and audio. Long post ahead, but I'll be ranting about it below

Why is this a bad move?

There are multiple reasons as to why making a censored, teen friendly version of Nu: Carnival is a horrible decision. I might not get them all, but here are a few I can think of off the top of my head:

It is literally impossible to separate the nsfw from the source. Whether the devs like it or not, they made an nsfw game. After the first half of the prologue, the game opens with porn. You are introduced to two characters at the time — Aster and Morvay. That right there is already an issue. Morvay is an incubus. He is a sex demon who wears leather lingerie. While there is certainly more to his personality, his is very existence is sex. Sex is what keeps him alive and fed. Morvay is very open about his sexual desires and the topic of sex as a whole. He doesn't find it shameful or taboo. So... What are they going to do with Morvay? He can't be removed since he's bonded with Aster. Censoring him will have him take a MAJOR hit. Now that leads me to the second part of this bullet point: sex is a crucial part of the plot. Essence is what keeps Klein stable. Eiden and his clan's job is to use their essence to fix the gem altars so said altars can keep the essence regulated throughout the continent. While there are several ways to replenish one's essence, the most effective way is through sex. Sex also plays a crucial role in expanding on the plot and the characters. Sex scenes aren't just there for entertainment, there is genuine lore within the dialogue. Through sex, Eiden bonds with his clan members in the most intimate and personal ways. He sees his clan members at their most vulnerable moments, and through that they share a deep connection. You can see when sex scenes go from Eiden and whoever the clan member is having sex just to have it to having sex because they genuinely care for each other and want to physically bond. I could delve deeper into this topic, but I'm sure you all understand by now what I'm trying to say. Sex is not just an accessory or perk. It's part of the worldbuilding

Minors will not be able to escape nsfw within the fandom. Since the game's release, the fan base has been entirely made up of adults. Since we are all adults, we freely talk and post about the nsfw parts of the game. You go on any social media platform where Nu: Carnival is discussed, and you will see nsfw. It's a very casual topic in the fandom, and in a way it's something that bonds us together… As weird as that may sound. My point is, making a censored version of the game is pointless, because the source itself in inherently nsfw and the fan base is full of adults making nsfw content which is usually uncensored since the artists expect for anyone in the fandom to only be adults

Minors in fandoms often bring drama... Hear me out on this one. Not to sound like one of those "grr minors dni I hate minors" people, but kids in fandoms often bring drama and discourse. As aggravating at it is, I have to admit that it isn't entirely their fault. When you're in your early teens, you're starting to discover yourself. You become very opinionated and defensive over your beliefs because you're trying to figure out who you are and where you stand in life. You're trying to gain independence and autonomy. It's normal... But it's very draining. Since Nu: Carnival has an all-adult fandom, there isn't a lot of drama at all. Sure, you're going to have stupid people saying stupid shit to start drama, that happens everywhere, but those people are typically ignored because it isn't too common. With kids coming into the fandom and starting unnecessary drama, it'll be so much harder to avoid. Not only that, but kids don't have as much media literacy as adults do. It's not an insult, but simply a fact. Nu: Carnival delves in a LOT of heavy themes in the game. Some of which are stated outright while others require you to read in between the lines to pick up on them. Since the fandom is all adults, it's easier for us to handle these topics and discuss them maturely

Why are the devs doing this?

My guess? Money. The devs are part of a company after all. At the end of the day, all companies want to make money. By making a game they can put on app stores, the game becomes more visible to a broader audience. People who have never heard of Nu: Carnival before will see what appears to be an innocent anime game when it's far from that. All it will take is a simple google search for people to see the the game is very much nsfw and not something minors should indulge themselves in. It's dangerous for both parties involved, both the minors and the adults

But hey, whatever's bringing in the money, right? Sigh...

The Bard's Songs

More than twenty years ago (well fuck me) I made a mixtape for our d&d campaign. That was when people used to burn audio CDs, and this was mixtape #39 (out of 271). I think I was playing an elf bard at the time.

I'm posting it here for posterity, for nostalgia, and as a snapshot of vanilla d&d lore/mood, as I experienced it back in the day. If it seems frightfully basic and predictable, well it was. Pretty much everything in that list is from Britain or Ireland or somehow evoking them. But hey, I ain't from there. It was exotic for me!

So it's vanilla and predictable, my little escapism soundtrack. And you know what else it is? A damn good compilation if I say so myself. "Fisherman's Blues" is one of best albums of all time, Loreena McKennitt is a genius, the Chieftains are giants, Pavlov's Dog are one of the few dad rock bands whose hits didn't age terribly, and hey, because I just listened to the whole thing again, when Enya stops singing "May it be" and the track continues with the Shire and the Fellowship leitmotifs, I am FULLY crying again, just bawling over here.

So here's to 2024, and the next 20 years of roleplaying, or as long as we got. Happy new year, everyone. Squeeze every drop out of life, and may your aim be true. The bard's songs will remain.

Happy 3 years to the Space Pirates Saga!

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say this series changed my life!! It was the first lore-based audio rp I heard and I fell in LOVE. From there I watched GB’s other series, then found other artists like Escaped, Scythe, etc etc. and now I’m planning my own audio RP projects! I’ve found something I’m truly passionate about as a viewer and a creator, and I’m so grateful

I'm experiencing The Locked Tomb again, and the Second Reading (or listening in my case, I'm doing audio books this time), is absolutely DELICIOUS. It's like, a whole different book. Littered with details that couldn't possibly be enjoyed without having read the subsequent story beforehand!!

I've had to pause and jot some things down just because they make me feel ways (this is obviously full of spoilers):

In Chapter 6:

1) Aiglamene is teaching Gideon how to wield a rapier and tells her, her hands "Shouldn't be twins, but sisters", that they have different roles, but should be aware and support each other or something. And I was, Tamsyn are you sending me secret messages about the Third?

2) Harrow is speaking to the congregation and Gideon is thinking about how full of shit she is, but then Harrow says something like how no one will ever love the Ninth like she does, that "her heart is interred here", and Gideon is like well actually that bit sounded sincere. Oh boy. It sure is Harrow. Sounds like Ninth Poetic Gothic Nonsense, but in Hindsight, really quite literal. Well done Muir.

3) This one is a little less direct but when Gideon realizes she may never return to the Ninth and thinking that that somehow makes it seem fragile, that by turning her back on it, not looking at it, it might fall apart. Likes she's destroying it... Omg 😰 Just sort of rang like a precursor to how she felt about Harrow "turning her back on her" with the lobotomy y'know?

4) So Harrow and Gideon are getting on to the shuttle to Canaan and tension is high, they are not happy with each other and Harrow says "I want to watch you die", and Gideon, just super hyped to finally be escaping, smugly saying "Well you won't do it here." (Here being the ninth) 😭 Tamsynnn

Chapter 9:

When Ianthe catches Gideon hiding in dark, listening in on the third, she refers to "the necromancer of the third house", necromancer SINGULAR. Nice little drop there.

Chapter 14:

Harrow says "I'm not equipped to deal with a spirit attached to a live nervous system, you're so noisy!", implying Harrow is equipped to deal with spirits NOT attached to live nervous systems, like say, a bunch of dead kids haunting you???

Chapter 15:

Harrow says "She never liked that cursed thing anyway" in regards to Gideons longsword, said she always felt it was "judging her". Which is a weird thing to say about a sword Harrow

Also my current crazy theories that may debunked during this book or the next two because I don't remember all the lore:

1) Teacher is John? The colorful belts and the bracelets mentioned on Ianthe and Kiriona are like... Control belts or something. John needed a way to "be" on that planet without going to the system. John got hyper paranoid after all his Lyctors betrayed him, and wanted security measures on his Princes?? Like clearly he isn't aware of what they doing all the time, but maybe he can, remote in? Idk. Crazy theory.

2) Cytherea is the only reason Gideon made it through the aversion trial. Or Harrow rather, because I'm not convinced Gideons body didn't die. (Or do her escape death trick). During that sequence Gideon starts throwing up blood and seems like it's going to end very quickly then Dulcinea is like No! And the blood dries up, and the soul sucking pain is described as moving around Gideons body... I don't think Harrow would be experienced enough to adjust her siphoning like that. Also Dulcinea was clearly very intent on that key. At first I thought in half memory of the scene that maybe she was just interested in seeing if Gideon COULD survive the trial. But I don't think she cared who got her that key really.

Idk! I'm only on Chapter 20 of Gideon. I've gone completely nuts about these books.

Teaser Lore: Mondlichthunde are very special dogs. Apart from their enormous size and ability to understand complex human sentences, their bite has the same effect on monsters as silver does. Mondlichthund bites prevent werewolves from regenerating and can fatally wound vampires, miseries, and other monsters that would otherwise be barely affected by ordinary wounds.

The Werewolf Hunters don't breed Mondlichthunde, they come to their masters seemingly from nowhere when they're ready to have one. But where do they come from? A mystery (for now).

I fear we moved on from "Risking It All With Your Demon" too quickly.

Avior ramble.

This video is my go to every time this world feels like it's gonna swallow me whole.

I listen to Avior starting to explain sovereign lore in such a calm tone. But he isn't calm, he's tired. And he's using the last energy he has left to try and tell the love of his life to not kill themselves.

He tells the story of how many questions he asked Cercinus. A story he most likely has told them before. But they can't remember.

He talks of religion, creation myths, forces of nature and the things he can't explain. He doesn't explain what happened to him to make them feel bad about his situation. He is re-telling all of the trauma he went through to warn them.

And then he still does what he promised. He won't stand in their way. He lets them make their own choice.

And at the beginning his voice sounds like he has surrendered. Then it gets desperate. "And I'm terrified of what it's gonna do once it has you. Is the answer worth having, if you don't survive to tell it?" He wants to scream. His voice sounds like he wants to shout at them, at the trap, at the world, that everything about this is so fucking unfair.

That he has seen it before. And that he knows he will lose them again.

I always break at "please don't ask me that. Because if you ask me how I feel, I'll tell you the truth, and I doubt that's what you wanna hear right now".

He's honest. Throughout this whole video it feels like he is walking the line of being honest but choosing his words so carefully as to not use his honesty to drag them back to him. To inform their choice. Not to make it for them.

He is close to crying throughout the whole talk but he breaks when they choose to hug him. That's when he cries. And that's when he talks about how much he cares and still cares about them. Not about how they cared for him. How he cared for them. And still does.

And then:

"Be safe, Starlight."

Because in his eyes that is the only thing they should focus on. Not seeing him again, not getting their memories back, not finding answers, not escaping the hellscape. Just. Being safe.

How long was he in there without them again? A minute? Five? A few seconds?

He started unraveling in this audio. However long it took for the sovereigns to talk to Starlight, even after those torturous years alone, that was his rock bottom.

I like a heathly combination of fluff and plot though I don't mind either on their own. I prefer cinematic stories with more parts!

Slow burn is definitely a favorite of mine! I like all genres but I do have a preference for fantasy storylines.

I absolutely avoid the fan made y/n-esque audio rp with already existing characters i.e Midoriya, Todoroki, Bakugou, no hate to the ones who like or make those, props to the voice impressions. I find it amazing they could imitate the voices but they just aren't for me though. Original characters are much more my thing.

Otherwise I'm fine with regards to everything else!

So far I only like GBA, Redacted and Sundew. I prefer soft, gentle mid-ranged to deeper voices. I like deep voices but I don't think I'd like a voice as deep as the mariana trench lol. Higher pitched voices also aren't my thing and if it's too whispery then it won't do it for me as well.

I'm pretty picky ain't I? Apologies if this is inconvenient, I have no one to ask for recommendations and I'm particularly new to the community (⁠*⁠´⁠ω⁠｀⁠*⁠)

Oh, I have some recommendations for you! My opinions are a bit biased here (I have a very strong preference for plot-heavy audios over fluff) but it looks like a lot of my favorites suit your tastes. I dislike fanfiction stuff too, especially MHA stuff and I also prefer gentle voice ranges that aren't too high or too low.

I'll give you a few recommendations.

#1: Escaped Audios! He's the very best VA at making you feel like you are living in a movie. All of his stories are heartfelt and exciting, most have slow-burn romances. Most of his characters have a gentle, mid-range voice that isn't too high or too deep (though he as a couple deeper voiced characters). I like his style of acting because he sounds very sincere and "real" when he talks. My two favorite playlists from him are Matador Gothic (his dramatic vampire slayer adventure) and The New Jersey Rats (a mafia-themed Romantic comedy).

I've followed him since Matador Gothic came out a little over a year ago but he's only recently started to gain hype after being super under-rated for a long time. If you like GBA's style of story telling you'll probably like him too. The only downside you might experience is that his stories usually don't leave a lot of room for fluff, so there are no cuddle audios or sleep aids etc on his channel. That said he's my current favorite, is incredibly creative and original, and he's amazing at supercharging my brain with serotonin.

#2: Obsidian Lantern. He has some of the most immersive sound production of any VA I've ever seen. Some of his earlier stuff is a little weird and clumsy but once he catches his footing he's great. His voice is very gentle and comforting to me, and he'll even speak a little Spanish sometimes.

His Gator Boys series is great and actually ties in with the lore of a few other VA's universes! I also really like his Merfolk series. He also plays around with common tropes while putting his own unique spin on them and I really like that too. He also makes all of his own art, and he not only draws thumbnails but actually makes illustrations of the scenes in his audios which is super cool. Overall really great, I think you'd like him.

#3. ZSaku VA. His playlists start out a little slow but over time his style evolved to be more cinematic. I really like his Vampire series (the Xanthus playlist) and his two interconnected crime series (The Elias and Issac playlists). They're good from the outset and just get better. Lately he's been making higher-stakes stories with more collabs and I love that. He's also collabed with a bunch of the other people I mentioned, which I love to see.

He has a nice balance between fluff and story-telling, and lots of his plots/characters connect to one another. If you like Redacted Audio you'll probably like ZSaku. The only downside is that he takes a long time in between episodes of each series, and works on multiple series at the same time, so if you really get into one playlist you might end up feeling a bit impatient.

#4: YuuriVoice. He's got a rotating cast of characters and he's one of my long-time comfort channels. He has ongoing plots throughout all of his series, but his stuff is mostly character-based. It's worth listening to everything and getting attached to his characters, as their development gets better and more complex over time.

He can do a pretty broad range of voices too, and they all feel unique and fresh. He has done some MHA/fanfic type audios before in the past but over time he transitioned to focusing on his own original characters and I love all of them.

#5: Shining Armor ASMR. I like him more as a comfort/fun/fluff channel. A great channel for listening to little bite sized audios with fun character concepts and lower stakes. I also like his voice and his accent, and it's fun seeing him do different voices within his accent. Definitely more on the fluff side but I think you'd appreciate him!

That's about it! There are more channels I like but based on your tastes I think you would like those channels. Also, honorable mention to Desmond ASMR. I love him but he's been on hiatus for like a year now!

WIP Wednesday

People, I have WIPs, as in WIPs, plurals! Amazing! And I remebered it was wednesday, the consecrated day for WIPS, which is amazing, too!

I'm writing two things:

Invictus - which will be a retelling of Phantom Liberty if it happened after storming the tower and with Johnny back in his body, but V still dying. Let's have a look.

The same link that allowed them to communicate without speaking also meant that Johnny sometimes swore he could feel V’s pain physically, like their brains and bodies didn’t get the memo they were separate again. It made situations like this particularly unbearable to the former terrorist, who was ready to snap at the client to wrap it up. Maybe feeling the change in pace and atmosphere, the client let the end of his sentence trail off and nodded when V repeated the fee for the job and told him it would be done within two days. The guy got up, held out his hand to shake but V made no move to stand. Johnny did, crossing his arms and giving the man one of his patented smirk. “Alright, fuck off now, we got other biz to do,” he said with a drawl. He didn’t care if people thought he was an asshole, he liked it even, but he needed to preserve V’s reputation.  The guy scowled, then shrugged like he was above Johnny’s pettiness, and gave a final nod to V, who returned it with a somewhat apologetic smile. It was tight around the edge, but probably invisible for anyone who didn’t know the king of the Afterlife well. The moment the man’s back was turned, Johnny waved his hand at Claire in a motion they’d agreed on. She didn’t even break her pace in handling client drinks to acknowledge him, but took control of the audio system. “Hey folks, you benevolent King is offering you a free drink right now! Come by the bar to get it,” she singsonged, and the result was immediate. People rushed to get there first under her booming laugh. In the commotion, no one saw V’s slump against the couch with an expression of pure pain on his face. They didn’t catch Johnny picking him up with difficulty because of all the chrome in his body that turned him into a fucking dead weight. Grunting, Johnny hoisted him over his shoulder and half carried him to the back room. “Johnny,” V warned right in his ear as they pushed through the excited crowd of mercs and clients. “I got you,” the man mumbled back, playing elbows to clear the way. He could hear V’s taking very small and cautious breaths, fighting down the nausea that usually came with the episodes nowadays.  They finally crossed the door to the back alley, and Johnny sped up when he heard V grunt and swallow heavily. They barely made it to the backroom before V was falling forward, nearly bringing Johnny down with him as he heaved into the bucket strategically placed here. Unfortunately, it wasn’t their first rodeo.

And the second one is a Jedi AU. Note that I didn't call it a Star Wars AU, since I'll be mixing the game's events with Jedi lore, but it won't have any link with Star Wars. Maybe. (bellow the cut to prevent post from being too long)

The skies opened with a thundering noise and a white flash of light, before rain started pouring down. V was drenched in a few seconds as he stood, arrested by the vision in front of him. Standing on the parapet, balanced despite the howling winds around him, stood the Renegade. His silver and ebony robes were whipping around him, revealing his black boots and the hem of just as dark pants. It felt effortless, how he stood there, held by the Force and his own will, toying with the void V knew was waiting on the other side.The man seemed unbothered by the lack of exit at his disposal, looking straight at V.  His eyes were dark, so much they appeared black, only crossed by a glitter of white when another lightning bolt illuminated the sky. Locks of black hair were escaping a lazy bun and dancing over his face. One got caught at the corner of his mouth, bringing V’s attention to their redness, and the paleness of the skin surrounding it. It was broken by a scruffy beard peppered with white.  He was waiting, calm and attentive. As V hesitated, Reed’s voice echoed in his head : “You want justice for your friend, V, and Silverhand is the key to that. We will shed light on this affair, I give you my word.” The Jedi Master’s serene trust in the Order was always a balm when V lost perspective of the goal.  The young master reaffirmed his grip over his saber, and widened his stance to adopt his preferred defensive form.  The renegade looked at him passively, the only change in his attitude a small tilt to the side, like he was amused by V. “I’m here to bring you to the Order for judgment,” V finally declared with strength. He breathed in deep, feeling the Force respond to his call and that, above everything else, appeased him. The saber came to life, bathing V in soft green light. it was like the winds were forming a cocoon around them now. The Renegade moved, his robes parting to allow V a view of the metal arm that gave him his moniker.  He jumped down the parapet on the soft grass of the terrasse, his movements graceful and light, like a cat.  “Give me your name, Jedi,” Silverhand said, mocking mirth coloring his inquiry. The young knight felt a spike of annoyance that he snuffed out with another deep breath. Strangely, it made his opponent smile wider. “My name is V.” “V…” he repeated with a smirk. “Just a letter. Concise.”  Then, with a flourish, he let his coat fall to the ground, revealing a sleeveless black top that gave V an unencumbered view of his silver arm. “Don’t think I need to introduce myself,” he drawled, catching his lightsaber as it jumped into his infamous hand. V’s focus was on his feet, though, which looked like the first stance of Djem So and it surprised him a bit. It wasn’t a typical darksider’s opening. The Jedi’s eyes jumped up when he heard the familiar sound of the lightsaber coming to life… Only for air to stall in his lungs.  He’d expected red, or at least orange, but the Renegade was wielding a saber of pure white light like V had never seen.

As always, couldn't really chose a small snippet, sorry for the long post.

Both are going to be long fic, but there is no telling when or even if they will ever be finished, since inspiration and writing block have been at war for about a year now.

Rose - even if she’s not fixated on a task, she’s always looping one of those 2hr study lofi videos on YouTube, just for background noise. she just finds it very soothing and it helps her escape from reality.

Nico - they don’t listen to music much, but when they do, it’s at the lowest setting. They started to get into music a bit more after meeting Hu, and they really like soft instruments pieces

Charles - he genuinely does not listen to music and knows almost nothing about it. he doesn’t like sharing this so if anyone ever asks him about his music taste, he always says his favorite artist is Frank Sinatra to try and impress them

David - he actually likes jazz a lot and is not a bad singer at all. he doesn’t like to sing, but sometimes he will break out into song in the shower, wether it be jazz or a darker song. he also knows how to play piano.

Teruko - knows nothing about music, but she tries to blend in by listening to trending artists and trending audios online, regardless if she likes the song or not
