You woke at quarter-light, the smaller moon peeping over the horizon. Grogu slept in his cradle-basket, softly chittering in his dreaming. The walls of the etxea were thick, the air cool, not cold. You’d slept on your side, his hand resting on your belly; you’d come to Din pregnant, but the child would belong to both of you, as Grogu had become his. It was the Way or it might only be Din, who cared without needing to possess. His lips kissed your shoulder, the side of your throat, his nose tickled your earlobe.
Your world was made of miracles.

Here’s one of the best known Basque poems, that has been translated to maaaany languages “Nire aitaren etxea” (My father’s house) by Basque poet Gabriel Aresti. It’s so simple and yet SO powerful.
Please leave your thoughts!
I shall defend my father’s house Against wolves, against draught, against usury, against justice, I shall defend my father’s house. I shall lose the cattle, the fields, the pine groves; I shall lose the benefits, the incomes, the interests, but I shall defend my father’s house. They shall take weapons away from me and with my hands I shall defend my father’s house; the shall cut off my hands, and with my arms I shall defend my father’s house; without arms, without chest, they shall leave me and with my soul I shall defend my father’s house. I shall die my soul shall be lost, my descendants shall be lost, but my father’s house shall remain standing.

Context: After receiving news of the attack on Blackhaven by the Vulture King and his outlaws, Queen Caerella Targaryen travels there to meet with Lord Daeron Dondarrion and his lord father.
@caetargaryen
DAERON: “Welcome to Blackhaven, your grace,” the heir of House Dondarrion greeted the queen, bowing his head in a polite salute. “You will have to forgive my father, his poor health has kept him abed all day. He sends his apologies and hopes you do not find offense in it. He will try to join us for dinner if he’s able”. A pair of maidservants stood close by and he beckoned them. “Ardoa eta mahatsa erreginarentzat, mesedez,” Wine and grapes for the queen, please. One of them held an amphora and the other with a plate of dark grapes. The people of Westeros had their ways of invoking the guest right, promising no harm. It was a strange thing in his mind, to promise something that should be implicit when inviting someone into your home. The tradition in Blackhaven was a little different, invoking the right with a different mindset. They offered wine and grapes as a promise of respect and devotion, of protection and hospitality. “Please accept this food and drink, your grace, ” the man offered, dark eyes meeting the lilac ones of the queen. “Nire etxea zure etxea da,” he echoed the promise of his people, “My home is your home”.
CAERELLA: The queen nods her head in acknowledgment. The Stormlands is an adjustment, but it isn't too bad. Her conversation with Deimos comes back to her, how he proposed she consider the heir to Blackhaven for a husband. “I understand, my lord. I am sorry to hear about his health. I will pray for him”. She looks to the gifts offered to her, a little surprised to be welcomed so warmly by a people that had seemed so resistant to her and her family. “Thank you, my lord,” she takes the cup, raising it to the man before sipping on it. “I apologize for the losses you have suffered, as well”.
DAERON: The heir of Blackhaven nodded in gratitude of the queen’s understanding and her gracious answer “Thank you, your grace. He truly needs prayers these days”. The gods were fickle in that sense, giving his lord father a good day for every dozen of poor health. Queen Caerella and Lord Daeron drank the wine and ate the bread, with the lord’s eyes settled on her lilac eyes; honest in his welcome albeit still adjusting to the state of things regarding his homeland. “I can only hope your visit has something to do with what I wrote in my letters,” the man said, “Will we take our stand against those Dornish outlaws?”
CAERELLA: She would pray to the Seven, for their sake. She knows they do not believe in her gods and while neither does she believe in theirs, it is out of respect. “It does. I thought it best to deliver my message in person. It was only right”. “We will. I have spoken with the Dornish prince, and he is understanding that we must protect our own lands just as he does his. It will not be seen as an act of aggression to the land of Dorne itself”.
DAERON: The Stormlander looked at the dragon queen and nodded, silently appreciative that she’d made the journey to keep him informed. He didn't take her actions for granted and could say she earned some more of his respect because of this. “There’s been enough bad blood between our realms as it is. It is a relief to know he doesn’t see it as a hostile action towards his realm,” he admitted. He glanced sideways, dark eyes landed on the queen as they walked “It is only just that those outlaws are neutralized, permanently eradicated if necessary. Know my men will follow you, should you wish to take action now, your grace”.
CAERELLA: She looks back at the magnificent beast she had ridden here. Silverwing needs to stretch her wings, badly. And she means to show the world that she is a true dragon queen, and thus she uses her as a means of travel. She then turns back to Daeron, hands clasped in front of her with a small smile. “Precisely. Though, I am hoping this hostility may change in the future. Do you think that is possible, my lord? You know the minds of the Stormlanders better than I, but I would like to understand”. “I think that may be for the best. I wish to write Prince Mors before we march, though. It would be good to know where his own men are, so that we do not run into any problems”.
DAERON: His gaze followed the queen’s line of sight, landing on Caerella’s dragon. It was a imposing creature, daunting but magnificent. It was no wonder the Targaryen had been revered for so long when they had such mysterious and strong bonds to the dragons. “I cannot claim to speak for all of the Stormlands, your grace, it is the minds of the people of Blackhaven I know best”, the Dondarrion lord said. Within the Stormlands the queen was bound to find those who sought peace and unity and those who, like the late Caron traitor, held on to a misplaced idea of pride and saw enemies everywhere. “I do think it’s possible. And I think it wise to work towards it. Perhaps working with the Prince of Dorne is a first step in that path,” he mused. The Vulture King was a common enemy for them all, a strange figure on the board that could ally Dornishmen, Crownlanders and Stormlanders in their quest to settle old resentments.
CAERELLA: She smirks as she watches Daeron look at Silverwing. Were it any other beast, like her beloved Vermax, she wouldn’t offer such a thing. But Silverwing has always been known to be quite a docile creature... “Would you like to approach her? She’s always been quite good with humans, Targaryen or no”. Her time in the Reach had changed her, but she has never grown mean. “I appreciate your counsel, Lord Dondarrion”. “Could you bring me where I might be able to pen a raven? The sooner we communicate with Prince Mors our plan, the better”.
DAERON: Her words visibly surprised him and the lord stood where he was, looking at the queen and then at the dragon. What he’d seen of the dragons was so different from the calm, majestic demeanor he saw of Silverwing now. “Yes,” Daeron said softly, dark eyes landing on the queen’s purple ones again. “I appreciate you asking, your grace,” the lord replied. He didn’t take for granted that Queen Caerella cared to know the minds of her subjects, or that she’d come here to take matters in her own hands and lead her people in this situation. “Of course, I’ll show you the way”.
CAERELLA: She smiles and nods, leading him over to the beast before they venture further into the keep. She looks deep into the beautiful eyes of silverwing, who makes a quiet noise-- almost akin to a purr-- as the two approach. She looks curious. “Put your hand out, so she knows you mean her no harm”. She demonstrates herself, to which Silverwing inches forward and eventually nudges her nose into the queen's hand.
DAERON: The lord found himself smiling subtly despite the mild knot in his stomach as they approached the queen’s dragon. He was more tentative in his steps, walking behind the queen so she may show him the appropriate way to do this. Daeron did as the queen instructed, raising his hand, his eyes following the familiarity of the motions. He’d heard so much about the inherent bond between a Targaryen and their dragon, yet it is another thing entirely to see it so closely.
CAERELLA: She looks over her shoulder, smiling. It is nice to see someone who does not cower at the sight of a dragon. Many men do, and she certainly takes note that he does not. “Issa ȳgha”, she whispers to the dragon. ( He is safe ) “I think she likes it here. It's been too long since she's gotten the chance to really fly. And I think she likes you as well, my lord” the queen laughs slightly. It does appear to be true though, as the silver beast looks upon him curiously. Again, that quiet purring noise can be heard as she keeps her eyes locked on him.
DAERON: The queen’s smile was encouraging and Daeron stood by her side as the beast came closer, taking note of the clever look in Silverwing’s eyes. He looked curiously at Caerella, wondering what it was she spoke on the Valyrian tongue. ”She’s a magnificent creature,” he mentioned, inevitably awed by the dragon. Daeron’s hand was subtly pushed by the dragon’s nose as Silverwing did what she did with her queen; dragon scales touching human hand. “Kaixo, lagun,” he murmured with a gentle chuckle. Hello, friend. What a strange and wonderful thing it was, to experience this moment. “I hope she likes me. I like her,” he admitted, wonder in his dark eyes before he turned to look at the queen.
CAERELLA: “She really is, isn’t she? And wise.. She’s seen so much, watched over my family for so long”. From Queen Alysanne, all the way to now. Over 100 years, she's seen. She looks over, smiling slightly as he speaks his own language to her. It is a sweet gesture, even if she may not understand. “Good”. “Where should I guide her to rest, then? So we can get to sending this raven”.
DAERON:  “It’s impressive, that a creature can live for so long,” he mused, his eyes still going over the imposing being before him. The lord muttered some kind words, as he did when he spoke to other creatures like the dogs that lived inside Blackhaven’s castle, or his horse. “Ongi etorri nire etxera,” he said softly, feeling the creature’s warm breath against his hand. Welcome to my home. The smile stayed on his lips as the dragon’s nose remained by his hand, and then Silverwing moved back a little; clever eyes of fire settled on her rider, her queen. “She can stay in the field behind the castle,” the lord said, and politely gestured for her to follow him around the brick-walled keep of Blackhaven’s castle. “If it pleases you, you may have the quarters overlook that field, your grace,” he offered, so the queen might be able to keep an eye on her dragon.
CAERELLA: “And she will live for many more, if the gods are good to us. Balerion was over 200, and he may have lived more if he hadn’t been injured”. But perhaps the Black Dread was too big for this world, as her grandfather had once said. “I think she’ll like that. She can spread her wings. She may take flight at times, but she means no harm and she knows to return”. “That would be wonderful, my lord. thank you”.
END.

Oto pięć klasycznych przykładów tapas: Patatas Bravas: Ugotowane a potem smażone kawałki ziemniaków podawane z pikantnym sosem. Pulpo a la Gallega: Kawałki gotowanej ośmiornicy podawane na ciepło z oliwą, solą i papryką. Albondigas: Kuleczki z mięsa mielonego w sosie pomidorowym. Champiñones Rellenos: Nadziewane pieczarki z serem i szynką. Txaka: Rozdrobniony tuńczyk z majonezem i kawałkiem papryki na kawałku chleba. Morcilla: Krewetka z czosnkiem i pietruszką na kawałku chleba. Gdzie Spróbować Tapas i Pinxos w Barcelonie? [block_content id="17831"]

I was raised in the US, but I have Basque heritage. I've always wanted to learn more of the history, culture, and the language but I don't know where to start. (The only family member who I would have been able to learn from died when I was young) Do you have any tips?
Kaixo anon!
You can begin with the easiest: generalist reads like Wiki. Articles like the one about Basques can bring you to other very interesting ones, depending on what interests you. Also Auñamendi Encyclopedia has tons of valuable info regarding history, and you can also visit Kondaira for a more general view. The Basque Institute offers some articles regarding Basque culture and folklore, as well as this website. From there you could decide which subjects interest you the most and maybe go a bit in depth there looking for more online articles or books.
If there's an Euskal Etxea or Basque organization in your area or nearby, you could pay a visit. They offer courses and talks, and maybe they can get you in contact with other people of Basque origin that may have known your relatives, or at least have a bit more info than you do.
Our blog comes last. We have all our posts tagged, so hopefully you may find some interesting bits under #history, #politics, #euskara, #tradition, #mythology, or any other tag that catches your attention.
We hope this will be helpful on your reconnection ^_^.
