Skyrim and Civil War

You know, there are ways to make good morally grey conflicts, but Skyrim's Civil War is not one of them. However instead of talking about how undercooked it was (it was), I want to talk about the underlying concept of it. Sometimes just saying "add more content" isn't a reasonable critique when it comes to a product that needs to come out (there are graveyards of games that never stopped developing).

The issue with Skyrim's civil war -

It puts a lot of emphasis on Talos, a god that tbh I don't think needed it and wasn't referenced until the third game. IDK this is more personal but I'd prefer Talos just be a hero-god of Cyrodiil/Skyrim you know? (Oh that guy who conquered you all and forced you into his empire, which some of you are old enough to remember? worship him pls)

It's morally grey, but in the "I hate both of these options way". There historical precedents for a nationalist movement opposing imperialism, and there are precedents for rebellions occurring from princes or nobles who want take power. However the conflict feels more like neoliberal democrat versus libertarian republican, aka I hate em both and the difference is minimal. It's like if someone wanted to do the US civil war but they really thought it was about states' rights. It's like Braveheart but worst.

It's both the impetus for the plot (the dragonborn prophecy) and shows up in the main quest, but ONLY if you don't interact with it (too much). And there's incentive not to, as it provides a cool quest that is optional and you can remove a jarl or two you don't like depending on how it goes. Otherwise you can really ignore it, and you're standing with any guild or city isn't really referenced except when the new Jarl takes over.

It's an excuse for chuds to make stormcloak memes after they're done making Morrowind slavery memes.

OK i know what I said about content but yeah the gameplay aspect isn't great with one or two exceptions (the siege of Whiterun and Solitude/Windhelm). The lack of say and options as a nation's folk hero truly shines here. It's like if during the US civil war Jesus showed up, killed the devil and then everyone said "thank you but we need you to blackmail a secretary".

You could make it work. There's a phrase the comes up in the game, Season Unending, which the nords used to mean war. You could put an anti-war theme or something regarding the cyclical nature of violence, even if people didn't agree it would be saying something. Personally, I'd use the 30 years war as inspiration - a religious and political conflict about an empire with multiple actors, all of which causing mayhem to the countryside.

Here are my solutions which don't involve any additional content, but instead changes/removal.

The Civil War ended at the beginning of the game. You see Ulfric die, his forces are scattered and the jarls with him are left picking up the pieces, but the Empire doesn't have the funds to restore control nor pay its soldiers. This helps explains why forts are ruined and the high number of bandits - they are soldiers/deserters looking for a payday. It also creates a narrative of trying to see who Ulfric Stormcloak was using unreliable narrators and maybe a bit of tragedy for a guy who thought he was The Guy (but in fact You're The Guy).

The Civil War ended years ago. Same as above, but make it more tamed. This would be the closest to just removing it entirely.

Make it a rebellion and have the player be a part of it. It would be so interesting a contrast to be against the empire after four games directly or indirectly aiding it. Now you could either try to do something thoughtful about revolutions and violence and the character of that rebel army, or you could just do Braveheart, but either way people would probably be more invested in it.

Don't let us join either side. The Empire's rulers claim the title dragonborn, and having some shmuck say he is would not be in their interest. Ulfric claims tradition and his power of the voice, not saying but implying a connection to Talos, and so he would not want you as a threat to his power. Have both groups be awful, and hammer home how these nobles might all claim to be different, but they slaughter the peasants all the same.

These aren't perfect solutions, and tbh the quality and quantity of the writers on board a project are going to impact any idea. But still, I think I'd prefer these options than what we got in game.

HxH Video Game Headcanon

I was falling asleep when my brain started listing out games that the HxH characters would enjoy playing so here we go



Leorio: Medical games like Surgeon Simulator and Bio inc.: Redemption or Strategy/Brain games. As a med student he would enjoy the learning aspect of medical games in regards to the fact that he would constantly critique them on their methods and accuracy, while trying to play them in the most professional way possible.

Kurapika: He would enjoy the story of a game more than its actual game play. His favorite stories are those where the player got wronged somehow and you are out to fix it, such as Mario, Genshin Impact, and Red Dead Redemption. Bonus points if the game ends up having a lot of fighting.

Gon: Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and any game that involves fishing and animals. He would enjoy the laid-back nature and the ability to progress as you wish, because he will be spending all day fishing and befriending the animals. A little bit of fighting monsters is also fun but doesn’t have to be a main part of the game. He wants to play a game his way, not be forced down a narrow path.

BONUS

Ging: I was going to say he doesn't play games but I forgot there's an entire arc dedicated to a game that he made. He'd enjoy open world exploration games like Skyrim, Elden Ring, etc. (Minecraft and Genshin would also fall under this). He'd like a bit of story that you can choose to follow, but would be the kind of player that unlocks everything first and tries to figure out the lore of places like ruins and strange creatures without the game's story telling him directly first.

Pariston: Facebook mom games like Candy Crush. Anything that he can play at full volume and annoy the crap out of anyone in proximity. What's worse is that he's actually good at the games and casually makes sure everyone else knows too. If it's not that, then any meme game like Fortnight and Roblox where he can troll kids.

Hisoka: He'd play those dating adventure games that you get ads for all the time: Episode, The Arcana, Dream Daddy, Huniepop, you get the gist. The more nsfw the better.

Illumi: Neko Atsume. Tell me that man doesn't sit there and stare at this phone screen, making you think that he's playing something gorey or horror when in reality it's actually just collecting cats.

Alluka: She's the opposite of Illumi. You'd think that she'd sit there playing cute little dress-up games or whatever was available on girlsgogame, but no. She's sitting in the dark, moonlight filtering through the window, closet wide open, blanket wrapped around her shoulders as she plays FNAF, White Noise, and any kind of horror game she can get her hands on. No one knows because she never screams during a game. Not one has gotten her frightened yet.

Mureum: Civilization, Surviving Mars, Armello, any kind of strategy and colonization/taking over rule game that exists. The more complicated the game the better. He'd play them until he figured out the best way to win, and then he'd use that strategy until he is number 1 on the leaderboard (if it is a multi-player game). Then he'd never touch it again and move onto the next thing.

The Double-Speak OC Tag Meme

I had to think about which character to use. Most characters in my stories are not actual OCs, but very under-developed NPCs. In the end, I decided this would be a good exercise for developing my LDB for The Wives of Shor.

Figuring her out was the hardest part of plotting, because she isn't the main character. Kaidan is, and Lucien is the deuteragonist. But their motivations come from the fact that they are traveling with the Last Dragonborn, so I had to figure out what would make her compelling. Since I haven't actually published any of the story yet (I want to complete it first) here's a bit of an introduction:

Pascale Bèrard

Age: 14 (She tells everyone she's 16.) (They do not believe her.)

Description: Breton from High Rock. She's got acne and doesn't know how to do her hair (curly, brown) but her family is High Rock nobility, so she's got high quality clothes and decent magical instruction before being sent to the College of Winterhold to continue her education. Too bad they didn't check to make sure none of her original hired escort was a secret Talos worshiper before sending them someplace crawling with Thalmor patrols...

What do they say they want? (i.e., what are the desires they put out into the world and have no trouble admitting) Pascale would say she wants adventure. For a variety of reasons, she was kept on a pretty short leash by her family in High Rock, and most of her life had been decided for her before she was out of single-digits. It was always known that as soon as she was old enough, she was going to be sent to the College of Winterhold to be...out of the way. She has an idea that the College is something like a convent - once she goes in, she's not going to be allowed to leave. This is of course somewhat mistaken, but no one has ever bothered to correct her misconception. She is also very vocal about wanting hot meals and clean sheets. While hunting and hawking were suitable pastimes for a young lady, her camping experience has heretofore been of the sort where your servants set up a nice pavilion for you. Traveling in Skyrim is not as much fun, and unfortunately this means she's somewhat easy to sway if some of the luxuries she was used to back home are dangled in front of her.

What do they think they want? (i.e., what are the desires they keep hidden and only admit to their closest loved ones) Pascale thinks she wants to be treated like an adult - to have her views and desires taken seriously by those around her. Fortunately she is just mature enough to know that declaring how mature she is would be the most immature thing she could do so she keeps that to herself. She also desperately wants her family to be sorry they sent her away. Let's just say that a fantasy where her father tearfully admits that she is the most powerful, the most accomplished member of their family and begs her to return, only for her to reject him is one of her favorites. She has many versions of it. Another desire is for the world to be just - as a teen, Pascale has a very black and white view of things. She has been brought up in privilege, where she was taught that if you follow all of The Rules and Live Correctly the universe will reward you. Morally gray areas, and people not doing what she thinks they should make her very frustrated.

What do they actually want? (i.e., what is something they subconsciously need, but either do not realize or cannot admit) For someone to believe in her.

I love the Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age series’, yet my favourite and all-time permanent special interest will be Skyrim, I just love getting lost in the lore and the number of quests there are. Although I'm not fond of ‘fetch the sword from the cave’.

Lack of respect, any form of this really annoys me. Everyone deserves to be valued and loved, we need more love in the world.

What do you dislike the most about being part of the rpc?

The hate that is spread around sometimes, I don't understand why people would want to do that, spread love and kindness and joy. You wouldn't want people to be mean to you so why would you do that? Spread love and passion for roleplaying, not hate, and support your fellow writers!

hi sorry to bother you i know this is like a dead issue now but i was a massive fan of kevin before the hogwarts legacy shit, i’m a trans guy and i stopped watching him because of it. i really miss his content though, his channel is pretty much all the games i like and my sense of humour, but i feel so conflicted about wanting to go back to his content. i was just curious what your thought process was around rejoining the cult? i know it’s kinda weird to ask now since it’s been like 6 months since it happened but i feel really weird about it.

It’s okay don’t worry :) enough time has passed, to me at least. Tbh this is the first I’ve heard about this in a while lol.

It’s okay to feel conflicted. I don’t speak for everyone here but everyone I talk to regularly has forgiven him but won’t forget that this happened.

I do believe he learned from this, he hasn’t done anything HP related since then, besides for a few ps1 Hagrid cameos (which is fine, ps1 Hagrid has been a channel meme for a while). I just hope this doesn’t age poorly.

What started getting me back was a bit after the apology post I noticed that other YouTubers were doubling down on their decisions or just not saying anything, including ones I used to respect. Even though I wished Kevin did more than just a Reddit post, I’m glad he didn’t stay silent and admitted he fucked up. His intention wasn’t malicious, unlike a lot of other creators, which is why I was more forgiving with him compared to others. Though I still lost a lot of respect which was regained over time.

Oddly enough what got me to really respect him again was his video on those American Superpastors and Megachurches. Having grown up in one (though in Canada, they exist here but aren’t as big) it was very healing. He couldn’t say it because he didn’t want to get sued, but he was very heavily implying that he believes it’s all a huge scam and they’re exploiting people. But he’s right, I’ve witnessed it myself. Never would’ve expected him to make a video like that and be so bold with it. I’m glad Europeans see what goes on here and think “what the fuck?!” Great video definitely recommend.

Other than that, mainly just enough time passed where I no longer feel that way. I missed the sense of community which is why I rejoined the fandom but it’s not my main one anymore. I mostly do my own thing these days. It was awesome going to Vancoufur as Werewolf Jim and meeting CMK fans there too, I could’ve sworn I was the only British Columbian in the entire fandom. Though I don’t fully trust the fandom still, mainly people I don’t recognize. But not anyone here, Tumblr isn’t really the site for those people.

Not much else has really changed in his content, just no more HP videos in general (as of July 22, 2023) and the fast-paced editing has mostly stopped. He now only uploads on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays now + any 2nd channel content, song covers or streams. The community has changed a lot though. The Reddit protests caused the subreddit to shut down so it’s gone, so there’s now no longer one big gathering spot besides Discord, which is the one side of the community I’m not in.

It’s really your choice if you wanna start watching again, anonymous user. Do whatever makes you happy :)

Since this is related, I haven’t heard a thing about HL since February. It really was just a mid game that was only popular because it was controversial. Transphobes really spent a lot of money on this, they’re the real losers. I know single player games get less players overtime but a lot of them still get talked about, replayed or are still relevant. Idk just my thoughts. If you really want a magic game with custom spells, play Oblivion’s Mages Guild questline or modded Skyrim.

Also sorry if I got back to this so late. I haven’t had a stable connection for a while until now. I’ve been away, escaping wildfires. Average Canadian summer activities.
