Lately, there have been sightings of a phantom serpent haunting the halls of the esteemed Blueberry Academy. At first upon hearing these tales, one could easily chalk this up to a Gyarados or other large serpent Pokemon seen at night and being mistakenly identified as some sort of cryptid.

But there have been some (admittedly blurry) pictures of this creature, and I now believe this to be a Zorokoryu, a fabled evolution of Zoroark.

Zorokoyru aren’t too well understood in the department of biology, due to there being no living specimens to study. All we have are several accounts of varying levels of dubiousness. Many of these accounts are from outright xenophobic sources which contain known fallacies, so doing research can often be painful.

Fortunately, there are also accounts from far less biased sources, though some are still doubtful for other reasons (one of them claimed that Zubat descended from Aerodactyl). The most trustworthy of these sources is Professor Laventon’s Pokédex. I will share an excerpt:

“This evolved form of Zoroark is quite difficult to track, but it was very much worth the effort. These magnificent creatures span around 20 feet long from snout to tail, elegantly “swimming” through the air. Their manes and tails taper into shadowy matter which is partially biological hair and partially spectral energy. As one would expect, they’re part Ghost type, but as signified by their reptilian scales and horns, they are also Dragon type.

My encounter with a Zorokoryu was in the Timeless Woods of Kitakami. I had heard reports of a mysterious Pokémon that resembled a giant, serpentine Zoroark in appearance, and I wanted to see this for myself. It was somewhat challenging to track them down. I would see glimpses of a serpentine shape, but when I got close, it would fade into nothingness. Sometimes I would retread a path only to end up in a completely different place than where I had begun.

Finally, when I had peered into a bamboo stalk to see if there was any water condensed in it, a serpentine form had slithered out of the opening, growing in size as it exited the plant. They seemed impressed that I managed to find them, even if it happened to be in an unintentional manner. At first I wondered if them fitting inside a bamboo stalk was an illusion, but apparently, Zorua and their evolved forms can turn their bodies into a shadowy material which can change in size and shape. That explains why their illusions are tangible.”

The second most recent account of a living Zorokoryu was 220 years ago. There have been some remains discovered, but for a long time the general consensus was that they had all perished. But I have always considered the potential of there still being alive individuals. After all, their species are known for their powers of illusion, so it wouldn’t be impossible for them to hide. And even if that isn’t the case, it’s not like they’re an extinct species. They are an evolution of Zoroark, so as long as Zoroark live on, so will Zorokoryu.

Ash is also a passable cook, having been taught by his mother, and although Ash lacks his father's virtuosity, he is reasonably competent at playing guitar and harmonica, as well as having a naturally pleasant singing voice.

Ash has also fostered a whole variety of other aura-based skills and powers, but maybe ... I will keep all of that for its own lore dump. :)

What kind of foods can the Selknight line have? Is there some foods they stay away from? And some they favor above others?

Food is simultaneously more and less complicated when one can shift between human and Pokemon form. Selkies tend to prefer Pokemon food such as Berries and Poffins (with tastes suiting their natures; Ingo likes Sweet, Emmet and Leslie like Spicy, and Emil goes for Bitter), but they more often than not have to resort to Human foods. For human preferences, I have a whole post about my thoughts here that at least mostly still applies to the Selknight version of the twins.

There's also the complicated nature of Meat. While the Selkies are omnivorous like most Pokemon, getting that protein and other nutrients from meat is verrry important! But it used to require eating other Pokemon, which. Could get complicated, so the twins had strict rules about what they could eat. I and others have headcanoned that the advent of cloning technologies means that lab-grown meat is commonplace nowadays, so acquiring meat is less of an issue...but one sometimes has to remind the twins in particular to COOK the meat before eating it, at least in human form where such is frowned upon. Regardless of source, Selkies have a strong preference for fish and shellfish.

As for foods they stay away from...well, anything too processed isn't great for them, so they try to avoid those (though sometimes the allure of a cheap, tasty-looking snack is too strong, and now you've got a Selkie curled up with a tummyache in your bathtub). Other foods specifically detrimental to Pokemon (or irl Seals) will likely also gunk up their systems.

Oh, and they tend to stay away from alcohol and other intoxicants, both for digestive reasons and also because they don't want to risk giving anything away and/or being too out-of-sorts to protect themselves. They'll occasionally indulge in a beer or glass of wine, but if one decides to drink more than that, the other remains sober in order to keep an eye out.

The new ice/steel growlieth, we really need a better term.... hmm... Boreal Growlithe. I'm calling them Boreal Growlieths for now since they seem evolved to live in the cold north.

Some tests have been run and these animals are long distance masters. Some testing of their digestive system has shown that they can convert protien directly into glycogine.

These creatures can go for weeks, they are ultra marathoners. The guys are made to run, it's kinda nuts.

Name: Ilex Winterbury

Ilex is an inventor and Aether Foundation Head of Advertising (But her true passion is inventing). She was born in Snowbelle, Kalos where she grew up with her dad and twin brother, she currently lives in Konikoni City with Nya (My other OC) and Helena (Who I stole from Dislyte). Her inventions have a habit of overheating and catching on fire, as well as resembling cute pokemon… making cute things helps her destress.

❄️ Personality ❄️

She becomes very serious and seems a little threatening when she's working. She has a habit of becoming very focused on projects, so focused she forgets self-care and healing small cuts and burns on her body. Outside of work, she’s a pretty shy, awkward dork who gets easily stressed from the amount of work she has. She often bottles her stresses and emotions until they become too much for her to hide.

❄️ Relationships ❄️

Holland is her twin brother and has been her lifelong rival. It started when they were kids competing to get the top grades in school, which often led to the occasional fistfight. But Ilex was also usually the one to stand up for her brother when he was bullied for being trans and because of his “close encounter with an alien”. Their rivalry hasn’t stopped in their adulthood, but they’ll still call and be sure to be there if the other needs them.

Angio Winterbury is her father, he works as a mechanic and even taught Ilex about being a mechanic. He was initially sad that he didn’t have a son (before Holland came out) to teach about cars, but then Ilex wanted to learn about mechanic stuff and he excitedly taught her everything he knew. He often tested her knowledge by driving through a snowstorm with one thing about the family truck missing that he’d have Ilex fix herself. She has a profound love and respect for her father and he’s usually there to give her a pat on the back or pick her up if she’s been feeling blue.

Nya is her best friend and roommate, having met Nya after getting wasted at a festival and venting to her in a public bathroom. They found they both loved inventing (and enjoyed colder temperatures) and decided to move in together to help pay the rent… but Ilex pays most of the rent since she works at Aether and Nya is living off live streams and the occasional invention auction. They’ll argue at times, but get along amazingly, with a shared love of music and shared knowledge of machines.

Olivia is Ilex’s friend/girlfriend, I’m pretty open to giving Ilex multiple ships. They met as part of a project Ilex started called: “Sorry For The Ultra Beasts :(“, which worked to repair Alola after Ultra Beasts came around and rampaged. Olivia’s shop was badly damaged and Ilex went to talk to Olivia about insurance stuff, but Olivia was too busy falling in love to listen. They bond a lot over putting on a confident face to hide stress and inner turmoil and loving cute stuff.

Lusamine is her ex-girlfriend… and their relationship was toxic. It was years after Mohn went missing and it was when Ilex first started working at Aether, and Lusamine quickly took a liking to her. They’d innocently chat, and get closer, Ilex comforted Lusamine often… but then Gladion ran away and Lusamine drove herself deeper into her work, making Ilex her one source of relief. She’d call Ilex into her office at random hours and just trauma dump or uncomfortably hug Ilex for hours, this went on until Lusamine was booted from Aether after the events of SM (in my headcanon world). They only had one last meeting where Ilex finally broke off the relationship, but it definitely left her mark on Ilex.

Helena is a little “less canon” since she originated from Dislyte… but still a pretty fun addition to have. She grew up with Ilex and Holland, being Ilex’s one friend in school, the one popular girl speaking up for the outcast Winterbury’s, and the only other person defending Holland. Helena and Ilex were inseparable (and very gay but didn’t know for ages), up until college when they went into differing fields, Helena going on to start a podcast. Since they had a spare room and wanted to split the rent more, Helena eventually moved in with Ilex and Nya in Konikoni. Helena is also a member of the Nurse Joy family and has healing hands… anyways.

❄️ Team ❄️

Ilex’s ace pokemon is pokemon of her creation: Virtual Assistant Rotom, or VAR. Var is one of her few working inventions that’s basically an Alexa on wheels that can also fight, it’s a Steel/Ice type that is technically a rotom form. Since it has one wheel, Var will leave the device to enter Ilex’s glasses that have internet, voice control, health scanner, and much more. Var is surprisingly sweet for a Rotom and doesn’t play that many tricks.

Polaris is her Amaura whom she was given as a child. It was on a school trip to the fossil lab in Ambrette Town where she was given a quiz and gifted a revived fossil as a prize, this moment inspires Ilex to look into science. Polaris was used as a nightlight for her growing up and is still a relaxing light show as an adult.

Snowbelle is a vulpix she caught when she first arrived in Alola, naming her after her hometown, and often uses powder snow to help Ilex remind herself of home.

Avalugg is Ilex’s main form of transport… I need to think about her team more.

❄️ Backstory ❄️

Ilex was born in Snowbelle City, Kalos where she grew up alongside her twin brother. She started competing with him to be the best student, but slowly developed an interest in machines thanks to her father. She could fix a car engine at age 11 and only had one friend in school, Helena, but they drifted apart when she went to college to further her studies in inventing. She couldn’t find any jobs that could use her skills, but she was able to get a job at the Aether Foundation.

It was there she started her “relationship” with Lusamine, and when Lusamine assigned her a top-secret project: She wanted Ilex to create a “type switching system” that can fire attacks. She wasn’t sure why Lusamine requested it, but just went along and created the “Rotating Type System” or “RTS System”... but soon found it would be used to create an “RKS System” for the top-secret Type-Null which horrified her. It was sometime after Gladion ran away and when Lusamine’s treatment of her worsened when she met Nya and started moving in with her.

After Lusamine is returned from Ultra Space, a coup is launched to kick her and Faba out of the Aether Foundation and make Wicke president so they can focus on being a pokemon hospital. With Lusamine out of power (and being hunted by the International Police), Ilex was finally able to break up with her and never saw Lusamine again.

Wicke initially wanted to give Ilex a promotion that would suit her work with inventing and care for pokemon, but the lingering trauma of Type: Null made her choose advertising where she created the

Project, and it was well received. She still organizes events and programs to improve public opinion, but slowly returns to inventing over time.

Lepidopterans are an incredibly diverse group of insects, but generally, they all are herbivores. Larvae eat leaves and imago drink nectar. Of course, any zoologist knows that a creature’s diet has nothing to do with how dangerous they are. Just because a Volcarona can’t eat you doesn’t mean provoking one is in any way a good idea.

However, if there’s anything to expect from evolution, it’s the unexpected. And this brings us to the topic of Alolan Caterpie and the rest of its line.

While the common Caterpie and Metapod are Bug types which evolve into the Bug/Flying Butterfree, their Alolan kin are Bug/Dragon, with Metapod evolving into Butterfang. While it can be easy to get Alolan Caterpie and Metapod confused with their common kin, Butterfang has quite a few differences separating them from Butterfree. Their wings resemble draconic fins, and the hindwings have a “tail” that tapers off and flutters in the wind. Their abdomen is much larger and has spikes. Their face is lined with scale-like growths, with their antennae resembling these growths. And in that face, one will notice their huge fangs, a very unusual sight to see on a butterfly.

The reason for those fangs, and the fangs of Alolan Caterpie? To kill prey.

Island environments can trigger a lot of oddities with the organisms that evolve there, and carnivorous caterpillars and butterflies are certainly odd. It’s likely an absence of other carnivorous insects in Alola prompted this change in diet. While Alolan Caterpie are ambush predators that strike their insectoid prey with raptorial limbs, Butterfang bite their prey, drinking their blood and injecting acid into their body to liquify their flesh to drink.

It is important to remember that Alolan Caterpie and their evolutions are still Pokemon, and while many people will find them frightening, they must be respected and appreciated for who they are. They are just as beautiful as their kin, and it is very important to learn that.

The International Pokédex

//hiya, i'm making an ooc post about this headcanon i'm using because i might start posting some different headcanons referencing this one. That way i can link to here!

The International Pokémon Professors Association (IPPA) has developed a huuuuge database for all known Pokémon, known as "the international pokedex". All Pokémon in there need good documentation about their habitats, their behaviour and similar things. This pokedex contains both general information on keeping the Pokémon as a pet or battle Pokémon but also lists every scientific paper about it submitted to the IPPA

There are two parts to this pokedex. The part we see in games is more like a thumbnail or a teaser about the Pokémon to catch attention. Like, you see a pokemon in the wild, scan it and then you know how it is called and have a little funfact on it. This part is a lot of half-truths and exaggeration and is not to be trusted (entirely). You're like: Hey theres a weird red thingy, what is it Pokedex? Well, this is Magcargo and it gets up to 10 trillion degrees hot! (actually only at it's innermost core while using powerful attacks, but you have to click the page to find that out and it sounds more interesting than yeah, a slightly warm snail) However, the actual entry about the Pokémon is somewhat scientific and details care tips and hazards. The pokedex is actually a pretty huge database.

There are also legendary Pokémon listed in the Pokédex if there are papers and scientific works supporting their existence, though this part of it is not as developed and probably has a disclaimer attached to it. Also, since hybrids are very rare and usually very unique, they aren't registered there either.

This international Pokédex is the baseline for restrictions on Leagues, Tournaments and the likes in different regions. If your Pokémon isn't registered int he International Pokédex, it's probably not allowed by default. Of course this can be restricted further (dexit, legendaries etc.)

There are of course all official Pokémon registered, but fakemon or regional forms from fan regions are in there as well (like, makes sense right?) and things like "contest breeds" and stuff like that is probably covered as well.

A while back we had a bit of an incident regarding Ultra Beasts but we've been doing our best to clean up the mess that was made.
