Sun Wukong's assorted lingpai (mandate tokens)
[ID: 1) An illustration of the two sides of a mostly rectangular lingpai made of wood. One side reads "令" and the other reads "弼马温", both written in seal script. The bottom of the lingpai is adorned by horses facing outwards, clouds by their feet.
2) An illustration of the two sides of a stone lingpai shaped mostly like a rectangle, but flared at the top and bottom. One side reads "令" and the other reads "美猴王", both written in seal script. The top of the lingpai is adorned with a dragon-pearl surrounded by flames and clouds. The bottom is adorned with mountains, the sea, and coral. The borders of both the top and bottom are decorated with clouds and flowers. The top is swirled in a way that resembles a lingzhi or a ruyi.
3) An illustration of the two sides of a red jade lingpai, shaped mostly like a rectangle but with a curved top. One side reads "令" and the other reads "齐天大圣", both written in seal script. The top of the lingpai is adorned by a ruyi with a flower and mountain at its center. Below the ruyi is a lotus flower, which sits on top of the forehead of a Yazi carving. Clouds extend out from either side of Yazi and below him are flowers. The two sides of the lingpai have the carvings of cloud pillars wrapped in a stylized waterfall. At the bottom are clouds which could also be the foam from the waterfall. Lotuses float atop this foam/these clouds. At the center of the bottom is a mountain with a ruyi at its foot. This ruyi also has a flower within it.
4) The lineart for the three lingpai, with accompanying commentary. The one labeled "BiMaWen" reads "carved and burned wood," "simple, only horses and clouds," and "ornamental, basically no power." The one labeled "Beautiful Monkey King" reads "carved from a chunk of Sun Wukong's stone egg," "customized from Ao family royal lingpai template," and "mostly sea, cloud, and dragon pearl imagery." The one labeled "Great Sage Equaling Heaven" reads "carved from red jade," "fully custom, in style of an emperor's lingpai but HuaGuo," and "flowers, waterfalls, mountains, ruyi, Yazi, and clouds imagery." At the side are simple doodles of the three lingpai. The first is light brown with a yellow cord, captioned "simple cord, no tassel." The second is grey with a red cord and tassel, captioned "silk cord and tassel." The third is red with a red cord and tassel, captioned "braided cord," "jade and gold accented." End ID]

(via Jann Wenner Removed From Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Board - Variety)
A day after the publication of a New York Times interview in which Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner said that Black and female musicians “didn’t articulate at the level” of the white musicians featured in his new book of interviews, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that he has been removed from its board of directors.
“Jann Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation,” a terse statement from a rep reads in full; contacted by Variety, a rep for the Hall had no further comment.
Um - interesting viewpoint, truly fucked-up...but certainly interesting.

The Beatles:
“So, a little later on, you know, we were playing a little club in Richmond [London], and I was doing this song, and suddenly I saw -- there they were, right in front of me -- The "Fab Four": John, Paul, George, and Ringo, the four-headed monster. They never went anywhere alone at his point.” - Mick Jagger at the Beatles’ Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction.

it will quite literally never happen, but man, i would've loved to see this version of mox feud (or even just coexist!! god help me) with this version of roman. in the shield triad, they're the steady axis that never betrayed each other. But by now, they've both changed so radically. they're unrecognizable, antithetical to each other, at the top of their respective parallel universes.

Another Cilurnum treat -- one of my beloved well-worn stairs. This is at the entry to the actual bathhouse, so I'm sure it saw a lot of use. Please also enjoy the blazing afternoon sun doing its best to keep us from being able to appreciate this wonderful sight.

I know you don’t really like Mick’s solo output, but what do you think about Keith’s?
I have mixed feelings about it. If I were to rank all of the Stones solo musical ventures, it would definitely be Charlie > Keith > Ronnie > Mick. Which, naturally, was also Keith’s opinion on the matter:
Tumblr media
I’ve never been a fan of the Stones covers he did with the Winos, the tempos are always a mess and they drag.
As for the stuff that’s solely his, I think it’s a mixed bag. He’s genuinely very talented as a lyricist and I like the subject matter he tends to focus on, because it’s a lot about complicated and long term/older relationships, which isn’t necessarily a mainstay of mainstream rock. And I also enjoy his voice, he’s not Pavarotti or anything but he knows how to write for his own range and vocal quality.
That said, I feel like the music/band itself tends to be very hit or miss, and I actually tend to prefer the songs where it’s Charley Drayton playing drums instead of Steve, he’s got a lighter touch that suits Keith’s style better. I was at performance the Winos did at the Beacon Theater 2 years ago as part of Love Rocks NYC and for unexplained reasons (what I heard on the grapevine is that Steve and Charley had some kind of falling out related to Charley’s late wife) Charley wasn’t there. The choice of songs for the set kind of sucked and the replacement bass player was no good, but I don’t think that performance is probably representative of what they were like in their heyday in the late ‘80s/mid ‘90s. Still not thrilled with how much money I spent on a ticket for such a mediocre performance. Hozier and Mavis Staples were great, though.
His collaborations with Levon Helm and Tom Waits are both gorgeous and there’s some beautiful covers by him of Mingus and other artists floating around out there. It’s not *really* solo Keith, but for my money his best stuff in that realm will always be the songs he sings solo on the Stones records, particularly “Little T&A” from Tattoo You, “How Can I Stop” from Bridges to Babylon, “Thru and Thru” + “The Worst” from Voodoo Lounge, and “Slipping Away” from Steel Wheels. Also “Alteration Boogie”, even though nobody was ever kind enough to give us an official release.
Ironically, I listen to him most often when I’m exercising, especially running or doing boxing drills with a heavy bag. I will say that I have a special place in my heart for “Hate It When You Leave.” The lyrics are so him, of course, but it used to be a song that was perpetually on my playlist for nighttime runs in London, and I have many fond memories of listening to it while flying through the shittier parts of Shoreditch and Camden Town.

U2 with Mick Jagger & Fergie: Gimme Shelter - Live from Madison Square G...
Top 30 Countdown Song # 11:  Gimmie Shelter
This song, as played as it is,  is still pure rock and roll running through your veins.
The opening lets you know that whatever is about to happen aint gonna be pretty.
This is my favorite version of it live.  Bono is there but after Fergie comes out to wail those iconic words You forget that Bono is even on the stage. Chickie can “sang”.
Fergie and Mick kick the shit out of this song and their chemistry is crazy.
Great rendition. ~Red

i can’t explain why but this makes me ill
#like i feel a legit knot in my stomach#tbh i’m not like the biggest beatles fan anymore but#it’s crazy to me how the band that did so much to open the cultural and musical worlds to people#and who used their status at the top of the world to genuinely push music forward and inspired countless acts#will be dethroned by someone who [while i won’t say is untalented but i personally struggle to find the good lyricist singer dancer or#performer or musican in] by all accounts is just a business tbh#like there’s nothing for music its all for charts accolades and money and that’s horrifying to think that someone can get this far with that#being the biggest goal.#that’s like sending 2010 mick jagger into the 60s and getting him to make the rolling stones popular#like businessman ≠ artist#you have to have an actual talent or reason for popularity to become popular and i see none of that#there’s no progression for anyone but her: the beatles pushed music stones pushed culture michael jackson pushed desegregation of popular#music#and she has…. ?#just looking for something she’s truly accomplished other than beating records because that’s all it seems to be#and she has no humanitarian reason for fame either#elton john was a huge star and remained a huge star not due to his musical output or breaking records but because he’s dedicated so much#time and money to causes greater than himself#he didn’t need to beat the beatles to carve his own place out in history#no one should have to beat them to that#their impact should be felt in ways that make it hard to think of a culture without them#because as it stands she’ll be seen as the chick that beat the beatles#never once used as a marker herself#it will still be them because they will remain important to culture and music#just as they would be without setting records#hell look at bob dylan#he has like 0 chart records and was given a nobel prize and will continue to be the marker for lyrical excellence#it just makes me so mad that the person who will beat all these records is doing it just to beat records tbh#it’s not deserved or even slightly important#it’s just a record to beat which SUCKS anyways i talked too long but im mad so :/

Pete Townshend talks about Brian Jones at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989: "And Brian Jones hurt me by not bothering to take a cure. Because I loved him a lot, he was very very important to me. He was the first real star who befriended me in a real way. I spent a lot of time with him before I really got to know Mick and Keith, who I love very much now. I hung out with him quite a lot and I missed him terribly. And I always felt that when he finally did collapse that the Stones were a very different group..."
