DOCTOR WHO MEME → scenes [6/10]
VERY OLD AND VERY KIND - “The Star Whale didn’t come like a miracle all those years ago. It volunteered. You didn’t have to trap it or torture it. That was all just you. It came because it couldn’t stand to watch your children cry. What if you were really old, and really kind and alone? Your whole race dead. No future. What couldn’t you do then? If you were that old, and that kind, and the very last of your kind, you couldn’t just stand there and watch children cry.”

The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit Script
Ok, so with this being not just my favorite episode of Who, but I will put it up against ALL of television (even the body swap episode of Farscape). Sorry this is long, but y'all have no idea how much I fucking love this 2 parter. I just really wish I could go back in time and re-watch this again for the first time. This was also right when I got into Firefly, and I was just so amazed at how similar these two episodes were to that series--and the music was just fantastic for this, so similar to Firefly too!
Little bits of this--Jesus, I loved that scene with the way the Doctor looks at Rose.
Ok, so this is the 2nd script I've ever read in my life, and I'm comparing it to GitF (see previous post on that train wreck) and I just have to say it shows how much different the writing style is--and David and Billie really do love their characters--so much of the nuances they bring to the Doctor and Rose aren't really in the script--like the writer just trusted the actors to do their jobs or something.
This is why Rose will always be better than me. Sure, I'd probably try to comfort Toby, but I'd stay the fuck away from that boy. Yeah, no--sorry about the possession, but no huggies for you.
HERE WE GO:
If I am not mistaken, and I only got into Doctor Who way back when it was on Netflix, and it was just the first two seasons (I had to scramble around on YouTube and get S3 and S4 and this was back when the episodes were just in like little 15m bits, fuck I'm old.)
Telling you that to say that I literally must have punched the air and screamed in delight when this scene happened.
HERO SHOT! Fucking adore this!
Wow, so there's really no other direction on what the actors needed to do in this scene--so all that amazing looks that the Doctor and Rose were giving each other--that's all David and Billie.
Ok, sorry this got long--but as I have very little understanding of scripts and acting and filming in general, this was so much fun to read.
I might look at Fear Her next because I am definitely curious to see how much of the script said things vs what the actors did.

Holy shit, could you imagine if David fucking Bowie was not only on Doctor Who but played one of the most over the top campy characters in the shows history in one of the greatest stories the show has ever made?
I would have killed to see this.
For reference if you haven't seen Caves of Androzani (which you should, even if you don't care about Doctor Who, it is must watch Sci-Fi), Sharez Jek is mad scientist who molded in the type of the Phantom of the Opera and is clad head to toe in leather that resembles fetish gear
I would have lost my mind over this.

I think the bi-generation is genuinely such a good way of ushering in the NuNuWho era tbh. When RTD started the 2005 reboot, he gave The Doctor all this trauma and backstory with Gallifrey being destroyed. It was a very slow process to get him to open up about it to anyone, and even then, The Doctor hasn't stopped to process anything since. Bookending the era with the earliest post-time war Doctor (that would come back to the show. I miss you Eccleston) getting to slow down, spend the rest of his regeneration finally dealing with everything that's happened, and heal? Gorgeous. After 13 bottling up all her emotions, The Doctor needs this to be able to move on and grow, but therapy sessions and grocery shopping aren't exactly great sci-fi. This bit needs to happen off-screen because it can't be fixed with just a couple of conversations. And having 14 do it instead of 15 lets us jump straight into 15 with the personality we see in the special.
Now, Ncuti and RTD can start the next era with a new chapter of the story with a cleaner slate, letting The Doctor evolve in ways we haven't seen before. Fleshing out the timeless child / flux and exploring what repercussions the salt had are the new backstory, just like the time war started the last era. (Ik a lot of people hate tc but I think it's an unfinished story that I'm willing to see through to the end) I think it will be refreshing and exactly what we need to reinvigorate the character and the show as a whole.
