Here we stan Law & Order: Criminal Intent. I’ve loved the series for years, but I only got around to watching the last five seasons recently and wow, it has consumed me. First time I’ve written anything for them, but I’ve been inspired by all the good fic out there I wanted to contribute. Will anyone read it? Maybe not but I feel accomplished, so there is that. 

Will also be posted to AO3, likes/feedback would be greatly appreciated 😘

Title: Thanks, Liz Summary: Eames’ sister be interfering, post Loyalty (Do we put spoilers on a show that happened more than ten years ago?) If you’re reading, you probably know. Rating: At the very most PG

“So, we’re just not going to talk about it?” Liz Eames asked her sister, she rarely stuck her nose into Alex’s business but then it wasn’t every day that she quit Major Case, either.

“I told you what happened, there isn’t that much to it,” Alex answered, pushing food around her plate. It had happened only a few days ago, the wounds were still fresh. 

Liz remembered Alex’s downward spiral after Joe had died; she was working vice then and his shooting drained the life from her, it was a harrowing thing to see. She thought Alex would have quit the force because of it but she made a comeback with Major Case, and her partner seemed to compliment her. It only now did Liz realise how much.

“Did you tell him?”

“That I quit? No, he doesn’t need that on his conscience.” Bobby already carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, he didn’t need this as well. She managed a smile. “On the upside, you just inherited a twenty-four-hour babysitter.”

Liz nodded, while she was grateful for that, it wasn’t addressing the issue at hand, the fact Alex walked out in an act of loyalty to her partner, sure Alex could say she was doing it for herself, but Liz saw the bigger picture.

“I’ve got some errands to run, we’ll talk later?”

Liz nodded, kissed her sister on the cheek then watched her disappear into the crowd. ‘Stubborn, fool of a girl’ She stared at her phone for a moment and decided to stir the pot, calling the number her sister told her to use only in emergencies.

“Hello?”

“Hi Bobby, it’s Liz Eames. Can we talk?”

Job hunting had not been as fruitful as Alex had hoped and truthfully, her heart wasn’t in it. She shouldn’t be in this position at all, but the Chief of Detectives forced her hand and now she had to live with her decision.

The knock on the door that came while she was eating dinner, was unexpected, as was the person responsible. Her voice caught when she saw him. “Bobby, hey.”

He looked tired like he hadn’t been sleeping but he managed a small smile. “Hey, can I come in?”

Alex nodded and stepped aside, she was happy he was here, but the question was, why the sudden appearance?

Bobby was nervous? He shouldn’t be, no one knew him better than Eames but the conversation he had with Liz had put him on alert. “So, a little bird told me you quit.”

She swore under her breath Damn it, that took all of two days. “Some birds have big mouths” She had only told a few people, and Alex wondered which one it was that had ratted her out. He didn’t even have a chance to ask his next question, Alex knew what he was going to say. “It wasn’t right, Bobby. I couldn’t stay there.”

“Alex…” Bobby started, he rarely called her by her first name, but it seemed appropriate now neither of them was on the job anymore. He blamed himself, she would have had such a promising career if she hadn’t associated with him as much as she did, but she stayed, and her presence had been a godsend because Bobby feared he would have gone off the rails a long time ago if it wasn’t for her. “You know Liz has this theory…”

Liz, she had called him. She could only imagine what her sister had said, though if she had been placing blame, Alex figured Bobby would be more upset, instead of being the soft-spoken doofus he always had been around her. Alex knew she was probably going to regret this, but she had to ask. “What did she have to say?”

“She said that your decision to quit.” Which he still wasn’t happy about, “Went beyond mere loyalty.” When Liz said it, as smart as he was, Bobby had to admit he didn’t get it right away but seeing Eames’s reaction? She understood right away. “Was she right?”

A million thoughts went through Alex’s mind, a lot of them involving murdering her sister for bringing this notion to light; see if she was going to take the kids trick-or-treating this year! While she had been lost in her thoughts, Bobby moved closer to her. “Eames?”

No point in keeping her feelings hidden now, he was right here, and they weren’t going to get suddenly called away. Alex sighed, confirming it. “Yes, okay? It’s true. It’s been true for a while Bobby; I didn’t say because I didn’t want to complicate things.”

“She’s in love with you, you idiot.” Liz’s words echoed in Bobby’s head, he could hardly believe it, after all, he had put her through, with his behaviour and the Gages and reopening Joe’s death, why would she…?

His silence was a little unnerving and it made Alex think she had made an even bigger mistake than quitting. “Bobby, I’m going to need you to say something.” Just to prove that he hadn’t had an aneurysm while they had been speaking, even if the words he said were ‘I don’t feel that way about you’ Alex told herself that she would accept it.

The kiss was unexpected, only because never in her wildest dreams did Alex think it would happen, it was also a little awkward considering Bobby was a good foot taller than her. Bobby seemed to think so too because he picked her up and stood her on the couch, at least now they were the same height.

After what was an epic make-out session, Bobby rested his forehead against hers, breathing hard. “It’s been true for a while.” He parroted her statement, “I just didn’t think…” That she felt about him that way, that he had been worthy of her affection, but Eames had always been there for him, he should have seen it sooner.

Alex smiled “Robert Goren, the smartest man I know didn’t think?” She shook her head while playing with his hair, it was a little longer than usual, but he still looked good, he always looked good.

Bobby gave her a cheeky smile “Well, I’m thinking about some things now.” They involved fewer clothes and more kissing. For the first time, in a long time, Bobby felt love, and hope, is this what it was like to be happy? What a concept.

“Does it include a whiteboard? Listening to you explain things makes me hot.” The fact that she had watched him do that almost every day for nine years? Yeah.

“I’ll see what I can put together.” Bobby wrapped his arms around Alex and carried her into the bedroom.

She still isn't sure about her hair when she steps out of her tent the next day. Every nerve in Shadowheart's body seems to be brimming with anxious energy, her heart raw and wounded and her mind racing. She was barely able to trance at all and the pain from yesterday's combat still sits deep in her bone.

Gods, what did she do?

Defying her Lady and for what? A stranger? A Selûnite aasimar no less, which seems to make a mockery of everything she's been living for up until now. There's no direction, no sense, just the fear clawing at her skin from the inside about what will happen to her now.

The old wound on her hand seems to be burning constantly now.

It took her ages to get her hair to the foreign, white color that she can now see out of the corner of her eyes whenever hair braid or her bangs move at all. Maybe this was a dumb idea. Maybe she should just hide in her tent and change it back to black so no one can call her ridiculous or childish.

It seems foolish to feel as if this was a tiny step to reclaiming her own body and agency after everything she's been through. It's just hair. It doesn't really mean anything.

Gods, but it does.

A visible sign of her failure, her betrayal, her ruin.

Shadowheart wants to hide away from the world and cry for a week.

Of course that's impossible.

And to mock her pain even further Aylin and Isobel are now right there opposite of Shadowheart's tent. She could hear Isobel's soft snoring as she attempted to sleep and her mind was racing with pictures of Aylin holding her gently while she sleeps.

They don't concern Shadowheart. Not at all.

And yet her mind can't help but circle around them, their tenderness, their light, their certainty of faith.

The cold morning air makes her feel a little more alive and she takes a few deep breaths to calm herself down. No one will care about her stupid hair color. No one is going to say anything. And if they do, it doesn't matter.

"Looking good, Sharty", Karlach hollers from across the camp and Shadowheart flinches, cursing herself.

"Don't! Call me that!", she calls back and Karlach laughs and waves at her before stuffing another piece of bread into her mouth.

Shadowheart lowers her head and presses her fingernails into the palms of her hands as she stares down at her feet. Her heart shouldn't be racing as fast as it does. Why is she so terribly weak?

Gentle fingers touch her chin and pull it up until she looks into the bright, grey eyes of Isobel. Shadowheart sucks in a breath at the unexpected touch and the wound in her palm stings terribly, but she forces herself to not look away.

"It suits you", Isobel says and her tone is so soft that Shadowheart wants to claw her face off. Fuck. She wants to say something snarky but the words don't come. Her throat feels dry and her tongue is like rock in her mouth.

"You two match now", Aylin says with such an official tone in her voice as if Shadowheart's hair color is like a pact between the three of them. Shadowheart wishes the earth could open up and swallow her whole.

The fingers on her chin are way too careful.

"I'm here if you want to talk", Isobel says with a soft smile. "Or if you just want to sit. Or someone to braid your hair in a different way."

"It looks beautiful", Aylin says as if she wants to reassure Shadowheart of something. Shadowheart has never felt less sure of anything in her entire life.

Finally she manages to swallow and pull back from Isobel's slender fingers.

"I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it", she says.

"Hmm", Aylin hums.

"If you need help with your decision you know where to find us", Isobel says and Shadowheart has a feeling that this is not just about her hair. feel free to send me more of these <3

1) a partner to ride with you when I can’t an exploration of Max and Rosa’s dynamic and how it shifted from the last time they shared a scene together (2x07 iirc) and how they got from derogatory nicknames to cutesy sweet ones by 4x10. It’s a missing scene where Rosa comforts him and they both continue to bond over Liz (and Rosa gets to give him her blessing to marry her sister)

2) as long as the sea is bound to wash upon the sand memermaid au, with Liz as marine biologist who discovers “extra”terrestrial life (sorry not sorry) not to mention Max is a flailing butt naked fish out of water for five seconds, Kyle tells Liz she can’t keep it no matter how cute, Max is delighted to have an Earth name and Liz tries to understand Max’s biology via touching scales (never a good plan babe)

3) Swing Life Away I’d be lying not to put this up (even if my writing was still going through major learning curves) it’s just so dear to my heart, cause I started it a million years ago under the premise of discussing issues that exist but don’t get a lot of nuanced discussion (which I never quite got to- but it’s way more expansive in my head). But anyways Mutant Powers au, where the Evans triplets show up and derail Kyle Manuel Valenti’s life but at least Max nails his bi-curious coffin shut (with my first attempt at Malex -which I loved and grew so much more fond of them through- and Lizobel)

4) Crimson Red Paint On My Lips Joniz! Handprints! Sexy brunch! Sorry not sorry, they had a great push and pull, and Liz deserved to blow off some steam and fuck the villian. Also, I’m terribly proud of the dumb tvd reference.

5) cause this is my game and you better come to play just this is them, Max is in his pillow Princess era for some unforeseeable reason (aka I had too many moving parts I didn’t need him to be moving his hands…), anyways, any fic I can wax poetic about his heart surgery scar and have Liz call him little names and try and sound poetic while discussing Liz’s capabilities, mind and body, is an immediate favorite. Also! Have I ever mentioned how much fun I had shopping for her look in this fic?! Like the dildo doesn’t exist- but two do that I kinda smushed the concepts of, for the alien glass joke.

lizzie lovelace a pop princess caliber face in music, and a former romantic partner of her fathers along with jazzy, together make the dynamic duo that keep lila centered and the first people who hear anything and everything before anyone else on her life. jazzy was actually the first person she met in middle school following her relocation to new york from new orleans (and before that ! paris! her parents loved to move places on whims sajnxka) and save for the BOTB have been inseparable ever since ! she was then introduced to rowan through jazzy and the trio with lizzie have been her anchor since as well! her partner in crime and the go to to cure her bad days! she can be a lot but they truly have her best interest at heart something she didnt have from her parents and for that they mean the world!

her birthday is april 19th, 1997 and she is 26! lilia is an aries sun, a libra moon and a leo rising! i would say the card i most align with her is the death card in reversal at her best and upright at her worst. mars would be her ruling planet and her ruling number would be 1! she veeery identifies closely with a very much amount of the traits belonging to her sun and moon and rising ! especially her moon and rising but also a lot of her sun sign as well!

lucinde known by her stage name "lucy less" (formerly lucinde lawless to match sevens but she shortened it following their breakup :') ) is felicific (relating to or promoting increased happiness), captivating (capable of attracting and holding interest; charming.), and wistful (having  or  showing  a  feeling  of  vague  or  regretful  longing) !!!!!

seven. seven always will be and still is in spite of the way things ended. she still carries a torch for him these years following and from a distance wishes him well. (if you hear sobbing its me!) the close second and she tells him he's the first would be her brother! he too has a band of his own and is the drummer for an experimental noise rock outfit. Generic question but how did u get the idea for rhioa and what’s ur planning process? Are you an outline person or a stare-at-the-wall-and-let-it-stew kinda person?

So there was a fic I read when I was in high school for a ✨trash pairing✨ (not winx, which is why I won’t name it here because other fandoms scare me), where the basic concept was ‘I’m evil and was defeated, you’re good and defeated me, we hate each other but are now working together to defeat a greater enemy.’ 16 year old me, already far too deep in this shit, went ‘cool!’ and tucked the idea away for a rainy day because come on, that screams sparxshipping. Season 8 came out, giving an in-universe pass to bring Baltor back, and the rest is history.

As for planning process, usually when I get a story idea I know how I want it to start and where I want it to end. And as cheesy as it is, I have a chart that I use from one of my college writing classes to help me plan from there

This motherfucker. He looks so simple, but he is in all my docs (except WWD because I started that during my gen classes YIKES IM SAND). I have the beginning and end already, so I can usually pick out what a good midpoint would be, what sort of actions could make up major plot points, and I go from there.

I didn’t use to plan out stories with so much detail but I’ve learned over the years that if i don’t, it makes it way harder and I’m less likely to finish them. So with RHIOA, for example, I have the whole thing planned chapter by chapter, and I did that before I even posted. It gives me some peace of mind because even if I take extended time away (and we all know I have), I can reread my outline and kind of get hyped for the story again. Though sometimes I will have to stare at the wall to come up with dialogue. Gotta strike that balance of ‘I fucking hate you’ and ‘I fucking hate you but sexual tension!’

BESTIE OF COURSE I REMEMBER YOU <3 sorry it took me so long to answer you, i had a lllllong day yesterday. this is such a long rambling ask i don't even know if it's what you wanted to know and you are not at ALL obligated to read the whole thing lol but here we go!!!

i actually remembered you asked me a semi-related question one time before which is here and at the time i was thinking of structure as in, like, Acts. acts of the story. and my answer was that i basically don't think about it too hard it usually organizes itself in the outline process. which is still semi true but what i referred to in THIS post (the one that prompted ur ask) which i am so excited about is the Layout Of The Scenes re: whose pov they are from and in what time period they are taking place, especially when you depart from sticking to the close third with one character for the entire fic. which is like BUBBLE BATH LAUGHING WOMAN.mp4!!!!!!!! i don't know if that's the kind of structure you get excited about but i am excited about it

what i mean by that is like. ok so like in anchor my structure was "alternating viewpoints," right, between the two guys i am writing the fic about. EVERY time the scene swapped i swapped povs between character a and character b. i was very very strict about this and even casually kept an eye on my scene length to try and give them the same amount of pov time. (who says you can't have two protagonists!!!) that worked out to both my benefit and detriment near the end of the story when i needed two big things to happen in a row where both scenes needed to be from character b's pov. i struggled with a long time on what to do about it and then figured out a way to slip a breather between them from character a's pov, and then it wound up that the story was actually better that way - not only did we need to calm down from the last thing before we built suspense for the next thing, but it allowed for some character a perspective for the previous scene, in which he was unable to really speak or act to tell us how he felt/what he thought because he was drugged. the structure in anchor was also fun because i got to plan out versions of a specific story that character b, an unreliable narrator, told (both to us and to himself), and in each chapter i had the goal of making the story just a little bit closer to the true version. i have a really good time doing gradual escalation like that (more on that in a minute).

so i really liked that alternating a/b/a/b/a/b etc structure, but it is hard to pull off! i don't know if i could have done it if the fic didn't have those guys be so incredibly isolated for most of the runtime. another structure i did that i really liked was for enter night, which was nonlinear but (for the most part) contained. this DOES involve acts - there were 3 "sections" to this fic. there was 1. everything that happened before sam and dean left bobby's house to protect the seals 2. the actual seal-protecting and then 3. the finale where meg enacted her grand plan. so while the chapters individually had everything happen out of order, we for the most part did not tend to put anything from one "act" in the section of another, except in places where you might put a dramatic flashback or flashforward anyways. (the prologue actually took place near the end of the fic, and near the end there is a flashback to something that happened at the beginning.)

and speaking on gradual escalation i also really enjoyed doing that in how arthur got his groove back. initially i really wanted to do an a/b structure for this one as well but it wasn't working because i didn't WANT to place equal importance on both characters (you will notice there is only One Guy with his name in the goddamn title and it is the one i am unfairly obsessed with). so i threw that out and instead adopted a system where with each chapter, the events of the plot would force arthur peel back one layer of anti-magic bias until he got to the heart of the problem (daddy issues with a side of existential crisis). i got to do other fun stuff in the spaces between that, but each chapter had a very precise goal, and i think the final product wound up being much tidier as a result (than, say, a fic like broken road, which i am proud of but which also had a much looser structure - the only thing that really gradually escalated there was how alarming dean's possession was becoming and it wasn't the Point of the story).

finally the structure i am working on RIGHT NOW for the undisclosed thing is something i am having fun with. instead of one structure for the entire story (it's too big!) i am having fun with a lot of little mini-structures. the story sort of has two halves, and three main pov characters. character a is actually the protagonist in this fandom, but i really also like character b and wanted her to have more screentime even though in this fandom she's usually someone who doesn't show up much, so i did the first chapter, the ENTIRE thing, from her pov. she and character a start the story in separate places, so i completely cut out her pov until they met one another, did an a/b structure for the first chapter they spent together, and then when they went their separate ways i have a character b scene at the start and end of every chapter, until the first half of the story ends.

meanwhile character c gets only TWO pov scenes in the first half of the story (one during her introduction, another during an event in which neither of the other two pov characters can logically be present) because in the first half of the story she is carrying a very big secret, and it's 1. hard to write around that from her own pov and 2. more immersive not to be able to get to know her in this time, since she is playing it all close to her chest. but later, in the second half of the story, after the secret's out, character a is...taken out of commission for awhile, and she gets ALL the pov scenes he might have had during that time, had he not been uh. unavailable. there is ALSO something of a verrry minor teeny tiny timeskip between the two halves, so in the second half of the story i am opening up the povs to include lots of the side characters, and at the start and/or end of every chapter i am using those scenes in a non-linear fashion to 1. explain what happened during the timeskip 2. solve a mystery about where an ancient-yet-advanced people disappeared to (are they dead, did they leave, not just what happened during the timeskip but what happened before the story even began).

to actually answer your question instead of rambling, i think i prefer that a/b structure and/or something nonlinear (never shall the twain meet, most likely, although i did get tempted to try for 12:46pm which is a deancas thing i will write eventually - part of why that's taking so long is that this kind of structuring is something i am struggling with). sorry for rambling so much! i hope at least some of it was a little interesting to you <3
