There was this fishing game my dad used to have on our old Mac in the 90s and I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me. I just remember there was a calendar and a weather channel so you could plan what day to go fishing on. There was also a bait and tackle shop to buy your worms and they were EXPENSIVE. I never had money in that game 😂 Hope you're having a good one!
Not well-versed in fishing games, but maybe this one? https://macintoshgarden.org/games/the-fishin-hole

Videogames I wish were real #3
A cozy fishing videogame where you fish EVERYTHING. You live in a cute empty void (yes, they can be cute). It's just you, a fishing rod and a tiny pond. The first thing you fish is a little sun. Then a stool and a radio. You sit down, put on some music and keep fishing. Sometimes you fish actual fish, other times its books, plants or seeds, furniture, food, tools, building materials, clouds, stars... Eventually you get to choose where to place other bodies of water where you can fish in: lakes, rivers and even a beach. You get to use all the stuff you fish to build and decorate your tiny world.
Similar videogames that actually exist: Moonglow Bay, Luna's Fishing Garden, Fishing Paradiso, Dredge

Tried Friend Collector But I suck at Pop'n Music and I'm not acclimated to rhythm games on controller. I'll never get any friends at this rate.

Adding gamepad support to a game I'd made for a three-hour game jam. Not really necessary, and I doubt that many people would care, but it's something that I'd like to mess with.
Tumblr media
I don't have an xbox controller to test with, so for now I'm focusing on PS controllers (since that's what I got). Simple things like most of the gameplay elements were easy to translate to a gamepad.
Tumblr media
For the compendium, it was simple to implement as well: I already had full keyboard interaction with the compendium, so it was a matter of mapping the right buttons. For the close button in the corner, since that's normally something you may click, I added a little prompt so players know what button to use to close the compendium.
Tumblr media
The map will be a little more complicated to implement since neither the artist nor I had considered gamepad input when we were making it, so we'll probably have to come up with a decent enough solution. (This menu is all mouse-navigated, so that's why it's harder to rework for gamepad).

Fishing Rod Controller implementation
I've been a big fan of the fisherman's bait and sega fishing series. I just got my hands on a ps1 fishing rod controller and have a dreamcast rod controller on the way. I thought fisherman's bait 2 big o'l bass would feel better on rod vs analog but I feel its about the same after playing with it off and on the past couple of days. I think the implementation of the rod wasn't handled amazingly. It is absolutely an enjoyable way of playing the game but I felt that either they didn't use the hardware to its full potential or that assigning some actions to motion controls didnt end up feeling right during development. Online reviews say that fb3: big ol bass 2 has a better implementation of the rod controller, but I don't currently own a physical copy to test and I personally feel that fb3 is a step down in a lot of areas vs fb2 and controls is one of those areas (fb3 doesn't have reel sensitivity options but fb2 does). I want to do some research on the how the arcade versions of these games worked and see how sega marine fishing handles the fishing rod controller and then write about that in great detail at a later date.

Videogames I wish were real #64
A fishing game where you are able to sail through space, called the Ocean of Stars. In this galaxy, the void between stars is full of life. You can cast your line and catch all kinds of wonderful fish. Some will only appear inside nebulas, near certain kinds of planets, near black holes, close to asteroid belts, in the vicinities of solar systems with binary stars...
Your space boat has a small farm and a well equipped kitchen where you cook all kinds of delicious dishes that you sell in refueling stations to other space sailors in exchange for money or information about where to find some of the galaxy's rarest creatures.

An excerpt from a comic I made a couple years ago about fishing in video games. Full comic is on my ko-fi for free (or a couple bucks if you’d like). Happy fishing!
