Alright, I finally got around to making my top 100 releases of 2023 list. Top 5 or so is definitive. The order gets more and more loose as the list goes on (if you swap placement 90 with 86, it ain't changing much for me). Mostly death and black metal, but a few non-metal releases trickled in here.

Fleshvessel - Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed

This thing feels like a God damn Magnum Opus! There’s been so much amazing metal and music in general lately, and to think on top of all the stuff I’ve listened to so far now Fleshvessel, a band I’ve never heard of, comes out of nowhere with the left hook to end all left hooks. Right off the bat this thing is incredibly composed. Some of the most engaging solos, riffs, and insane musical composition / playing in general. There are huge amounts of jazz influence on this thing, from the construction of the death metal inspired electric guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, to the incorporation of upright basses, violins, pianos, flutes, saxophones, and so many other instruments not typically found in something so brutal. But it’s all composed together as a complete total. No gimmicks, this shit is just straight up that orchestral. It’s instrumentation I’d say ranged from jazzy, to death metal, to late 1800’s orchestral, to avant garde compositions and atonal moments.

Definitely, if you’re the kind of person who’s actively looking for something different, or if you’re just looking for an epic album and don’t mind genre fusion, absolutely check this thing out. On top of the amazing composition this thing also happens to have moments of genuine intensity and heaviness / moments of genuine emotional evocation and presentation. Like I said, this isn’t just like a gimmick jazz metal album, this is some well constructed shit. Absolutely going to have to start keeping my eyes on Fleshvessel.
