i have a question about cat comprehension (and this probly applies to other pets too)

if pets like BilliSpeaks can comprehend human language when spoken outloud, (shown by when they respond in the same language via button-pressing)……

do ALL cats comprehend spoken human language from their owners, and most just cant demonstrate it cuz they dont have buttons?

i know sometimes dogs react behaviorally to the word “walk”!!

do most pets straight-up comprehend full sentences?????

We all have Advent calendars this year, including Jack. Every night before we open them, we read a devotional and sing a song. Jack has figured out this routine and gets VERY EAGER for his treat during the song, as pictured here.

Last night we mixed up the order and sang before we read. The whole time we were reading, Jack was alternating between barking at us and pressing his EAT button. He really wanted us to skip to the end, already!!

Billi the Cat Gives a Reminder: Time For Those Meds!

Billi is a cat who lives with a veterinarian mom who specializes in zoo, aquatic, and wildlife species, and also an engineer dad. Over the past few years, she has been learning to use buttons to let her express herself with prerecorded spoken words, as part of an animal behavior study.

Being the grand old age of 15, she also has a few senior cat health issues, some of which she needs regular medicine for. She didn't like taking it at first, but vet mom applied all those professional training skills to coach her into the routine.

So much so, that when mom had to go out of town on a trip, Billi used one of her 70 buttons to remind dad when it was time for her pills. (And since these buttons connect to the net, mom gets notifications on her phone even while she's away.)

So for anyone else who needed that reminder to go take your meds, Billi knows that sometimes it's a chore, but in the end, they do make you feel better. Go do it. Don't make her use her "Mad" button at you.

one of my clients gave me? the fluentpet starter kit so here we are i guess. took away the 3 surviving big buttons (help, door, and water) and now have 5 functional small buttons in 3 tiles (help, play and train, go potty and water). posting mostly to try and remember to require use of them every time.

what's your take on the whole "FluentPet" thing and people training their pets to "talk" using AAC devices? is it real communication or are animals just pressing random buttons to get a reaction and their humans are anthropomorphizing it?
