I can't say I'm terribly surprised by (some) of the reaction to this episode.
There's a contingent of fans that one (or more) of the characters and ships.
But trying to apply a dichotomy of who is right and who is wrong really fails to get a bunch of points.
Yang, Blake, and Weiss acted according to how they were brought up and socialized. An excellent post by phoenix-fells gets at what Yang is doing. And this post by bumblebyaf gets at how much Ruby has actually been through it.
Ruby likely has some in-universe PTSD at this point because... I mean... look at what she's been through? Ruby has BEEN THROUGH IT and hasn't had much in the way of support.
As a character-building moment, I am all in for it and I was happy that she finally got to be angry and vent her frustrations. Was logical? Of course not. But it was EMOTIONAL. And she's has had to mask her true feelings or just bury them because she's the leader of Team RWBY, she's the one everyone depends on, she's a huntress, she's the one everyone must count on.
If there's any group or individuals in the series that are wrong and have failed all them, especially Ruby, it's the fucking adults. From TaiYang's emotional shutdown (as someone who lost a parent before I was a teenager and saw first hand what that'll do to one's spouse, I can sympathize and understand. Still doesn't make it right, still has a ton of negative consequences), to Ozpin making her the leader despite being 15 while Weiss, Blake, and Yang are 17, to Ironwood's general misguided evil-for-the-greater-good strategy of killing anyone/letting everyone else die to save his piece of the world, to the other older Hunters and Huntresses just treating them as equals and not realizing they might be licensed but they still some maturity and guidance and support. Ruby, sometimes, got that from Qrow. Sometimes. Most of the time, she's had no one to vent to, no one to really show vulnerability to, no time to be vulnerable (even by herself).
"But Val," you say, "she had that opportunity after the fall of Beacon and immediately formed a new team with Jaune, Ren, and Nora. She's HAD the opportunity to at least take time to herself and mope." Did she? Did she really? Or did she act exactly as what was expected of her by everyone else that was still around? Did she think she probably owed it to her now scattered and broken-up team to try to salvage something? She might have had a choice at the most basic level. But given her personality type, her own beliefs on duty, I don't think she really DID have a choice. And again, she bottled up the grief and sadness, and kept going despite the fall of beacon, the death of Pyrrha, and the first death of Penny from earlier.
Ruby is going to feel guilty and horrible about what she just did. It's going to add to her breakdown. It'll be interesting to see if the writers draw from the Volume 4 (boo-hiss, I know) episode where Yang has to work through her trauma.
Ruby's ascension is going to be the most interesting. What aspects of her will change? What kind of leader will she be going forward? Yeah, I still see this being the case, the show IS called RWBY.
But yikes on the some of the reaction. For all the criticism that Ruby has developed the least by virtue of her role in the story, it was clear that the writer's have been setting up her breakdown and growth and we're finally getting it. After all, if you want to learn, you have to suffer.

so like we're all on the same page that this is straight up a racist fantasy right? like this is a deeply racist fucked up fantasy equivalent to power fantasies about guys saving their gf from getting raped or like literal racist fics about slaves x masters and shit right????
also its so crazy to me that this entire fantasy is literally just about yang being lauded i swear to god i dont think bumbleby stans like blake. i gen think most of them just view blake like the prop that has minority status (without actually being analogous to real life minorities) that can be used to elevate YANG. its ALWAYS about YANG getting to be this human savior representing the faunus or saving the faunus or working with blake to lead or teach the faunus, like the faunus are fucking uncivilized humans, aka RACIST RHETORIC. its always about yang being elevated while blake is used as a springboard or a punching bag or as a damaged delicate little waif that needs yang to protect her. its gross and racist AND homophobic.

Am I a dick for hoping that 'faceoff with my Poser incarnation' isn't where WBY (especially BY) are declared Caught Up With Their Need For Self Reassessment by the narrative? 'Cause "my failures are definitive growth opportunities" and the way that 'human or cat??' question was framed seem horribly simplistic. And this is without even touching Ruby's cracking point.
I'm gonna give a short answer and a long one, anon.
In short, no, I really don't feel you're a dick for hoping that.
In long, I feel like it's part of being in the FNDM for long enough that you can kind of get a sense of what the story is trying to say within the still relatively short time parameters. Because they only have so much time, the conversations with their past selves had to pinpoint their most sensitive insecurities so that they could wrestle with them. However, I feel like these moments are serving as a catalyst for further self-assessment later in V9, specifically because there are more nuanced implications to their answers to their younger selves.
Weiss still hasn't emotionally come to terms with the fact that Atlas is gone. So much so, that we literally have not seen her face when she directly references the fall of Atlas or the loss of her family (as she knows it). We will likely be seeing this processing play out during the rest of V9.
As for Blake, yes we have a definitive answer that she has resolved to walk the path of being a bridge between Faunus and Humans, but we still don't quite have the answer to Oobleck's question "Very well...How?" to Blake saying that someone needs to stop the inequality and corruption in the world (see: Mountain Glenn). Until Blake comes up with an answer to HOW she sees the way forward through breaking the oppression of the Faunus, her story is not yet complete. (Adam thoroughly mucked up that vision, and she has yet to clear it.)
Yang (oh my god, Yang...) has now BEGUN the important work of growing from her trauma. Recognizing what happened as something she can potentially use to become the best version of herself is step ONE in the process. Babygirl has yet to confront her abandonment issues, and while she's made strides with Blake (and I would argue has at least mostly forgiven the hurt Blake caused by leaving), she has done nothing re: her self-sacrificing attitude, her covering strong "negative" emotions with humor, and communicating her needs to her family and her partner. The opportunity may be there for post-traumatic growth, but unless she puts in the serious work to follow through, she will continue to stagnate and repeat past failures mistakes.
But this is RWBY, and we still have 6 more episodes this volume. It's already been such a WILD ride that it's jarring to recognize that we're not even halfway there (whoooooaaaa livin' on a prayer!). We have time, and if Ruby's sequence is anything to go off of, there is much more to do with these conversation, and just because Ruby's is so hard-hitting doesn't mean we won't see a recurrence of WBY's in the next few chapters as well.

Dear obnoxious bumblby stans who insist that Yang is a canon lesbian (her sexuality is unconfirmed) and get angry whenever somebody headcanons her as bi
just admit you're biphobic and go.
We will respect you more if you stop beating around the bush and just say it outright.

2, 3, 7, 8 and 12 for RWBY. :3
2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
Mercury 🤝 Winter
Never bottoming ever because of the need to be constantly in control of themselves, their actions and their autonomy. And they're valid.
3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
In the rwby fndm???? My god so many. I could be here all day listing them because this fndm just loves to come up with the most heinous stuff but if we remove the abuse apologism, self-harm/suicide stuff, ‘actually this thing is a sexual assault metaphor’, ableism, and such, because those feel too easy, I’d say the absolute current worst take I’ve seen (this year) is ‘Actually Ruby being a Magical Lesbian Pregnancy makes more canonical sense then Tai being Ruby’s dad’ because it was a one-two punch that included ‘Magical Lesbian Pregnancy also suits the themes of the show better than a character being trans/intersex’. Fuck that noise.
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?
I know it says character, singular, but whatever here's the list: Blake, Yang, Nora, Pyrrha, Cinder, Emerald, BRIR, Coco, Neo, Salem, Robyn, May, Fiona, Weiss, Willow, Raven, Jaune, Ghira, and the RWBY-fied versions of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Jessica Cruz. The only reason Hazel isn’t here is because the show ruined him first and then the fndm started playing ‘child beating apologism’ after. Ruby’s on thin ice as well.
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
All of them- That Blake is better off now that she's become the main damsel in distress for the team who alternates between looking sad and Literally Calling Herself A Cat instead of being, say, an outspoken civil rights activist with a spine who was willing to stand up for herself and actually be 'fiesty'.
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
Taiyang. Rip to people who can’t accept that Good Dads in Fiction exist but I’m different.
Why people should like him: he has The Best Dog, he was once a spy in a war against an immortal witch and retired to be a househusband, he has a tattoo, he raised two daughters with Qrow, they’re probably married for tax benefits, he grows flowers, he has zip off cargo pants, he is a LOVING and ATTENTIVE father and Yang and Ruby have only ever spoken highly of him, he’s literally The Best Character In Chibi, if anyone wants to fuck around and come anywhere near me with Taiyang hate I will not only block them I will put them on blast before I do it. I’m making him a #1 Dad mug, he’s the best parent in all of RWBY, haters gonna hate.

Honestly....my thoughts about the show is that it's great at what it does and it wasn't "disappointing" or lackluster or even really as bad as a lot of those lame ass youtubers said RWBY was. I remembered the show from when I was younger and I had to admit that back then it wasn't the best show to watch, but it's grown into something really amazing now with a lot of really great and impactful messages about fighting against the impossible.
Sure it has it's issues but most of the plotholes people point out are lame shit that just obviously doesn't matter. Character's aren't 100% perfect and obviously are not going to be doing perfect things all the time, especially when the plot kicks in and people are actually stressed for once.
I loved that, that was genuinely such a fun watch. I didn't watch it on Roosterteeth (because RT they're never getting cent out of me ever) but I hope they continue on with RWBY. Idk how they're gonna milk 14 volumes though now that seems impossible lmao
its kind of silly i remember thinking "It seems impossible for them to have made ANYTHING out of this show considering it is just magical girl weapon fighting school", but they somehow managed it I guess.

There’s something to be said about how vitriolic the FNDM is when it comes to content creators who make content that isn’t “canon”, specifically those that rewrite the story to be “better” or those that race-swap characters.
“Better” to someone may not mean “better” to someone else, the matter is subjective - and that’s okay. Someone who wants JNPR to be the main cast instead because they are “better” in their eyes than RWBY is as valid as the opposite. Your experiences shape your beliefs and no one can change that but you. However, that does not mean you should be tearing others down if they don’t agree with you.
Yes, engage in healthy conversation. Yes, write that Fix-It fic where Blake has a growth arc about accepting that she was the most privileged Faunus in all of Menagerie! Totally go for it! Bang out that art piece of POC character you want more attention for in the RWBY-sphere!
But what some of you don’t realize is that peoples experiences are different from your own, and you attack them for it. “They” don’t fit your perfect narrative. “They” don’t 100% whole heartedly accept your show. And you know what, that’s fine. Just because they don’t completely like your show doesn’t say anything bad about you as a person. Putting your entire self-image into a piece of media is dangerously unhealthy.
As I’ve gotten older in fandom spaces, I’ve seen some of the worst come and go: Hetalia, Undertale, Voltron, BNHA, literally an entire list at my disposal. Frankly, it’s gotten even worse as time has gone on. Some of you have this all-or-nothing mentality that dictates you must enjoy every single aspect of this media or you hate it with every atom in your body if you find a single instance of something you don’t agree with.
If someone has criticism that POC/LGBT+ rep needs to be shown more in RWBY, let them. In my opinion, it’s a valid criticism. If you don’t see it that way, then that’s on you. But you shouldn’t go around ripping peoples throats out, claiming internalized bigotry in some form or another, simply because you don’t like their opinion. You lack nuance and self-realization when you do these kinds of behaviors, and honestly, need to do better. Jumping down someone’s throat polarizes the community even more, and what good has that ever done for anybody?

I’m not saying Ruby getting separated from mini Weiss, Blake, and Yang (perhaps during a confrontation/conflict of some kind) is going to happen, but I’m not not saying that it would be a way to bring her to her absolute lowest point.
Currently Ruby isn’t in a good headspace, but she still has something to hold onto, her team and Little.  If she loses them (and thinks it’s her fault, either bc of how she loses them or bc it was her idea to play the Red Prince’s game that got them shrunk in the first place) and ends up alone, I don’t think she’s going to be making good decisions.  Plus the weather mirrors her emotions, so, you know, giant stormy weather potentially too.
Somewhat on topic, but writing this out made me think of fairy tales where the princess has to be rescued (think Sleeping Beauty in her castle surrounded by sharp thorns etc), except a twist on that.  Ruby is the one holding herself prisoner in the middle of a maelstrom, her team is trying to fight through it to get to her, but she’s not letting them get close.  The only way to resolve it is for her, probably with their help, to address the underlying emotional issues causing it.
Ergo, endgame Volume Finale Battle: WBY vs. Ruby
(as always I function at 50% serious and 50% ‘is a clown’)

Since it’s PRIDE Month,
and since Winter Schnee is my favorite fictional character - and I love seeing posts about her,
and since she doesn’t have a canon LGBT+ status (as of now)…
What are some of your favorite Winter Schnee LGBT+ headcanons?
This can include her gender identity, sexuality, coming out headcanons/stories, etc.
