Why do wasps have such tiny waists? I read some can't even digest solid food and have to be fed by the babies like a reverse bird
a bit of taxonomy, first: order Hymenoptera contains what we call in English sawflies, wasps, bees, and ants. wasps evolved from the waistless sawflies, specifically a parasitic group of sawflies (so phylogenetically, an ant/bee is a wasp that is a sawfly).
the wasp waist, or petiole, likely evolved to give a parasitic wasp’s abdomen more mobility so she could jab her ovipositor into a suitable host. this means parasitism is ancestral to all wasps, and was actually lost in groups like the vespids (social wasps/hornets), Anthophila (bees), and formicids (ants). the wasp waist stuck around though, and so did the liquid diet! of course, plenty of adult apocritans can make use of solid foods like ants, or by getting nutrients from their larvae like paper wasps. but of the Hymenoptera, I believe the sawflies are still the only ones to chew solid food like other insects (plenty of predatory adult sawflies!)

we'll meet again
by HobblyWobbly
“And you’re gonna take me?” Ghost nods. “Why do I highly doubt that?” They both pointedly look at his former partner's corpse. “No, that’s not it. I don’t really care about people dying. I mean, everyone’s gonna die eventually. Some people just die sooner than others. I mean, why are you helping me? What’s in it for you?”
At that, Ghost hesitates. Unable to come up with a response, he turns away, reaching down to grab the carcass by the collar. He begins dragging the body toward the exit. He’s only a little surprised when he hears a soft grunt and then the legs being lifted as Rabbit helps him carry the corpse.
Looks like he has a new partner.
Ghost is a mercenary with only one goal on his agenda; to kill every single Formicide member. The only problem is when a teenager that he calls Rabbit comes into his life who is being hunted down by everyone. The only people he can trust in this world just happen to be the very people he has avoided for thirteen years. Hunted by both humans and monsters, the two must survive this wintery wasteland. It's too bad they both have a shitton of baggage to bring along.

My first post after the whole tumblr+ protest logoff
So i brainstormed a bit of a horror series with my s/o, involving ants as the antagonists because honestly their biology is mad freaky.
It involves ants either growing larger than humans and invading human settlements, or humans shrinking to the size of ants and being forced to escape the colony. (I don't know which, i like both ideas) We're given a full tour of ant lives and their most particularly unsettling aspects, such as disposing of individuals at a moment's notice when they do not perform well which might lead to the human characters taking a discarded ant under their wing or something.
Alot of the horror will most likely be coming from instances where the ants know the humans aren't their kin and they make multiple attempts to kill them off in gruesome fashion using either their mandibles or bodies. That would force the protagonists to be super crafty, digging their own tunnels possibly and having to steal the ant's food to survive.
Other chapters, spinoffs perhaps will feature distinct species like Myrmecocystus sp., the honeypot ant, and there's emphasis on the deplorable living conditions of the worker ants who have to store honey or nectar in their abdomens. We might see one bursting on accident from overfill, there might even be a character killed off in some way by one of the workers.
And of course, some installments will deal with red and/or meat-eating ants and carnage will most definitely ensue.
And i already know that this series will be called Formicide, a play on 'homicide' and the clade all ants belong to, Formicidae. Hollywood fucking WISHES it had ideas this good, i'm sure.

This lovable lady spent some time with me today and brought me a smile inside. Here we have a female ant, an alate, now to become a queen. I watched her remove one wing and begin working on the second. This also means she is about to start a colony, and just had sex. I hope she makes a home near me. I will feed her and all her daughters! #ant #ants #insect #insects #entomology #formicid #myrmecology #science #usofscience #animal #animals #antqueen #zoology #alate #biology #utah #saltlakecity

If you're going to write a science communication book, maybe learn how the fuck taxonomic names work first so you don't lose credibility on the third page, goddamnit. "Nest of formicidae" and "the formicidae" are entirely grammatically incorrect. It's obvious you thought this was a really clever use of scientific nomenclature from the way you added a footnote clarifying merely "Ants.", but you really look like a fucking sloppy writer. It's "nest of formicids"/"nest of members of Formicidae" and "Formicidae", and you could have found this information in five minutes of googling, without even having to wade through the actual ICZN. I can't believe none of your editors caught this. git gud scrub
