So in the middle of my rewatch, I suddenly got really distracted by Francisco's black-with-gold-accents "formal" court attire, specifically in regards to the leaf accents on the sleeves. And I could help but think of the *other* black-with-gold-leaf accents look that we see on a Flores family member--Esteban's in "Elena and the Secret of Avalor." Although the designs between the two suits are distinctly different, there is enough of a similarity to make me want to think about them as a set and how the differences actually reflect the differences in the characters/their roles as well.
Although the silhouettes are similar overall, I would go far as to say that Francisco's look creates more of the classic "storybook prince" vibe than his grandson's. His costume is ornate and grand without seeming ostentatious. Think of how Prince Charming is costumed in pretty much any Cinderella adaptation. He must look striking and appropriately heroic--but specifically in a way that enhances our heroine without overshadowing her. And in nearly every adaptation, Prince Charming is more than okay with this, and the same is true of Francisco. He is at some level aware that he is on a show called "Elena of Avalor"--not "Francisco Flores of Avalor" and has no desire to pull the spotlight away from where it rightfully must be. In fact, he is far prouder to be the grandfather of Elena (and of Esteban and Isabel as well) than he would hypothetically be as the protagonist of his own story.
(Esteban meanwhile exudes "main character energy" and I mean that in both the complimentary and derogatory sense. In his mind, he is on a show titled "Chancellor Esteban of Avalor and His 41-Year-Old Guilt Complex That Not Even Tres Leches Cake Can Heal." But like if I had four decades of trauma to process and no one else seemed to notice, I would probably feel uncomfortable when we are not about me as well. And fittingly, his black-and-gold outfit is much more attention-grabbing than Francisco's, but much more on that later).
Two big parts of what leads to the "fairy tale hero" look in Francisco's outfit (and also to his "default" blue version) are: 1) the two medals pinned to his chest and 2) the epaulettes at the shoulder (I believe this is still the correct term even if they lack the tassels we normally associate w/the term, but like fashion historians can feel free to correct me).
Either epaulettes or medals of honor --or both-- are often seen on characters of his type. (Pick any Disney prince and you have a 50% chance of seeing one of these. Heck, King Roland's main outfit in SoA has both as well). A large part of what leads us to associate these particular sartorial touches as "hero-coded" are their association as part of typical military dress uniforms throughout history. (And yes, I recognize the problematic nature of such a trope, but just bear with me and accept it for now).
By including these as part of Francisco's costume (and its original blue equivalent), the animators are implying that he has a long, proud of history of serving his country and that at least some of this service came as a soldier and/or commander on the battlefield. And that he won honor--military and practical alike--in doing so.
Esteban's ensemble, obviously lacks the military touches (the epaulettes and medals) of his grandfather's. Because for all that he too served Avalor for decades, his service was of the bureaucratic rather than the military variety. (Shuriki obviously won't let Esteban wear a sword with his uniform--even he wanted to. Hardly surprising considering the whole "I killed your aunt and uncle. Doesn't that make you want to go apeshit?" thing they've got going.) But I digress.
The arms (esp the shoulders) and trousers of Esteban's ensemble are also much more form-fitted than Francisco's,as befitting a younger, more athletic man who wants to better show off his physique. (The real "secret of Avalor" is how Esteban singlehandedly managed a country for 41 years and somehow did so without skipping "Leg Day"--am I right, folks?")
Compared to Francisco's much plainer jacket, the design of Esteban's coat is also more ornate (the leaf accents are larger and more detailed) and colorful with the red collar, cuffs, and lining. This makes sense given that Esteban is established as much vainer and more flamboyant than his grandfather and that he has as mentioned, a much stronger need to grab attention.
However, the elaborateness of Esteban's jacket makes even more sense we consider it in the context of his role in Shuriki's court. He is a skilled diplomat, yes, and a capable administrator. But like every courtier, his primary function is to be ornamental first and everything else second. His looks, his charm, his attentions are expected to always be in service to the Queen first and foremost--not even in service to his duty or his country but specifically to the Queen herself. Certainly not (!) in service to his own will. (And damn, that must sting extra hard for someone who has only ever wanted to be seen and listened to and valued for himself.)
As such, Esteban is treated as an extension of the Queen--yet another pretty-if-powerful tool in her Almighty hands and fundamentally little different from her pretty crystal wand.
And yet, we see little tiny little hints in Esteban's SoA costume that he remains more than just Shuriki's shiny little Avaloran ornament. Let's go back to the red accents--shall we? Obviously, the show as a whole establishes red as Esteban's "signature color"--an honor he shares with Elena (and Mateo..but like he's less relevant tbh). Moreover, red, along with yellow/gold (and blue but again less relevant here), is one of the official colors of Avalor. Indeed the jaquins on the royal flag are red against a gold backdrop. So we can see an subtle wardrobe-related foreshadowing of where Esteban's loyalties truly lie and of the decision that he will make at the end of the episode.
And finally, as the artists among you will attest, red's complementary opposite on the color wheel is green. As in Shuriki's signature color, and this is reflected in nearly everything about her--from her eyes and eyeshadow to her dress and earrings to her green magical smoke, to her Emerald City-core dressing room to the teal background on her little silhouetted flag redesign. And complementary colors are often paired together so that the unique, striking shade of each is shown off to its full potential--and such is the case here. (Often, the effect is even achieved by using the "opposite" color as a key part of adding "shading" to the object).
A string of red lights wrapped around a Christmas tree may be overshadowed at first by the massive green boughs that it is entangled around. But nevertheless, it is because of the contrasting green that we are fully able to grasp just how bright and red those lights are able to glisten in the light. And so it is with Esteban's red collar shining forth like a beacon through Shuriki's haze of green smoke.
But when it comes down to it, red is still green's perfect, natural opposite. Red is a primary color, a true chromatic original unlike the artificially-created secondary shade of green. Moreover, red is Avalor, red is Esteban. The little dab of invading, interloping Shuriki green that has been added to the red paint only serves to heighten its fiery, crimson hue all the more.

Blooming Rose
As you might know, I like Gabe and Francisco’s relationship, so I wanted to write a short fic about them. You can also read it on AO3.
Hope you like it!
*** Since the moment Elena became the Crown Princess, she dedicated most of her time to taking care of the kingdom. She often went outside the walls of the palace to see what problems and needs her people had, and arranged the Grand Council meetings every day to discuss with its members how things were going.
After the successful project of the bridge between Avalor and Córdoba, Elena and the rest of the council didn't have any more plans, so everyone decided to take some rest to unwind before they got back to the kingdom affairs.
Francisco went out into the backyard of the palace where the rose bushes he often took care for were growing. Walking around the bush with the hand pruners, he cut off the extra twigs and looked at it with a smile and a light clap with his hands.
"Perfect."
Francisco was going to get to the next bush but was distracted by some noise coming from near the fountain. He pulled his hand aside so his servant could take the hand pruners away and went from behind the column. He saw two men wearing the fencing uniform.
One of them was tall and well-built, deftly attacking his opponent who was extremely awkward and clumsy.
"The tall" fencer got the point and knocked the sword out of his opponent's hand, and he raised his arms in acceptance of his defeat.
Francisco smiled as he recognized who was behind the mask and approached the fountain with a cheerful exclamation, "Bravo! Nice fight, Lieutenant Nuñez!"
Gabe took his mask off and was about to thank his rooter with a joke but once he turned his head and saw Francisco, he dropped his eyes and bowed instead.
"Thank you, Señor Flores," he said emotionlessly, and the other fencer once he heard this name began to clumsily taking his mask off.
"Señor Flores!" He exclaimed as he accidentally dropped the mask, and Francisco chuckled.
"As I can see, you decided to take some fencing classes, Private Higgins?"
"Oh, not really!" He waved his hand with a broad smile. "Lieutenant Nuñez needed a fencing partner, and I volunteered to assist him."
"The rest of the guards were busy. I suppose," Gabe muttered and looked down at his sword.
"Oh, in that case, you are probably tired from all those sessions, aren't you, Private Higgins?" Higgins was about to assure him he was still full of energy, but Francisco interrupted him. "I think you should go to the barracks and get some well-deserved rest."
Higgins turned his head towards Gabe and then back to Francisco with a salute, "As you command, Señor Flores!"
He strode away from them, and once he was out of their sight, Gabe relaxed his furrowed brows and breathed a sigh of relief.
"You can thank me later," Francisco chuckled, and Gabe turned towards him with a forced smile. "I think you should take some rest, too, Lieutenant Nuñez. Don't you want to take a walk around the backyard with me?"
Gabe grabbed the back of his neck and began rubbing it awkwardly. With his head down, he glanced at Francisco who still looked confident in his offer and took a deep breath with a bow.
They were walking around the backyard but there was a little silence for a moment before Francisco got to the conversation with Gabe.
"You're an excellent fencer, Lieutenant Nuñez," he began, "I haven't seen anyone with such outstanding swordsmanship skills in years."
"Thank you, Señor Flores," Gabe replied calmly as he tried to keep their conversation as formal as possible but then his lips curled into a soft sad smile, "I had a great coach."
Francisco smiled. He noticed how Gabe eased and even softened a little when he said that and wanted to keep the sincere atmosphere between them.
"My daughter was a fencer. Lucía."
Gabe glanced at him softly, but immediately looked away as he wanted to keep himself from asking Francisco too many questions that were not his business.
"And she was an amazing one. She has won so many competitions and then began to teach Elena."
"Does Elena fence, too?" Gabe asked with real curiosity, forgetting about formality for a moment.
"Yes. But she hasn't fenced for such a long time. Since the moment Shuriki took over…"
Francisco dropped his eyes, and Gabe sighed heavily as he realized he shouldn't have asked him that.
"However," Francisco continued to lighten up the mood. "She wants to start fencing again. She thought she would train on her own and has already found her old sword somewhere."
"That does sound like Elena," Gabe smiled, and Francisco chuckled softly.
"But I see that she needs someone who would train her so I want to help her with it. But I need not only someone who has outstanding technique but also someone I can trust."
Francisco stopped next to the bush and looked at Gabe who stared at the flowers until he raised his head with a gasp.
"Wait. Are you talking about me?"
Francisco giggled quietly and nodded.
"But why me?" Gabe asked with the same confusion. "I'm sure there are many guards who fence better than I do. Plus, they clearly have more experience…"
Francisco plucked a rose from the bush and smelled it with a peaceful smile.
"I know what you did to the kingdom when Shuriki was the Queen, Lieutenant Nuñez. This is why I trusted you to protect my granddaughter. Maybe, just maybe, some guards are actually more experienced than you are but none of them has something you have: My deep respect and trust."
Gabe smiled awkwardly as he had no idea Francisco thought of him with such reverence. Wise, decent, kind-hearted, loyal to traditions, truly noble, Francisco was the one Gabe admired deeply, so he wasn't sure how to react to his words.
"I am truly flattered by your offer, Señor Flores," Gabe finally spoke, breaking the silence. Francisco was busy admiring the flowers now and didn't want to rush him with voicing his decision. "But I don't think I can accept it."
"Why not? Ouch!" Francisco exclaimed out of pain when he accidentally touched the rose thorns, and Gabe quickly took a cloth out of his sleeve to cover the sore.
Francisco smiled at this gesture and continued, "You know Elena very well. And Elena knows you. She'll be happy to share the hobby she shared with her mother some time ago with her new friend."
Gabe's eyes widened at the word "friend." He never considered himself anything more than Elena's Royal Guard and didn't even think that he could call the Crown Princess his friend.
Or could he..?
"Besides, you need a fencing partner yourself, right? With all due respect to Private Higgins, I don't think he's a good opponent for you."
Gabe didn't reply.
He came closer to the bush on which lush roses bloomed and saw how one of them was hidden in the thickets of the larger flowers. He gently pushed them away so this rose had more space to open its petals and saw how it wasn't any less beautiful than the rest.
He smiled slightly and shifted his gaze to Francisco with a confident nod.
"I accept your offer."
Francisco smiled back and placed his hand on Gabe's shoulder.
"Thank you, Lieutenant Nuñez. But there's one more thing I want to ask you for," Gabe nodded to let him know he was ready to hear his request. "Go easy on Elena during your fencing sessions. Maybe even let her win. I don't want her to get hurt."
"Of course, Señor Flores. I will always be here for Elena and won't let her get hurt."
Francisco smiled and thanked him with a nod, although he didn't want to let the lieutenant go yet.
"Don't you want to get to the palace to have tea with me? This is actually why I came to the backyard in the first place. To gather the rose petals. My dear Luisa makes wonderful rose tea."
Gabe chuckled, "I'd love to. And do you have some rose coffee?"
Francisco laughed and placed his hand on Gabe's back as they moved to the palace.

Yay requests! How about "19. high fiving" for Francisco Flores and Puss and Boots in an inexplicable crossover (pretty please)?
Frantic knocking on the door broke through the roars of the thunderstorm. Slow, shuffling steps echoed through the tick, stone walls, the air inside the old castle almost as cold as inside it. A dim candle flame wobbled and flickered, barely giving any light. By the time the sluggish steps reached the main hall, the knocking increased until the iron fittings shook along with the wood. Finally the heavy latches drew back and a violent gust of wind threw the door open.
A young man was standing on the stairs, absolutely drowning in the tempest. His sombrero, which must've been real fancy only a few hours ago, was now slumping sadly on his head, the brim overflowing with rain water. His black hair and mustache were plastered to his face, even though it must've once been carefully styled. His clothes were tugged by the wind and he was hiding something under the edge of his coat.
"Please, señor," he panted. "I have nowhere to go..."
The door started to close, but he quickly jumped in between them and lifted his coat.
"Please, I have a cat..."
A pair of green eyes, as big as saucers, peeked from under the wet fabric and the wettest, poorest, orange tabby cat meowed in a voice so heart wrenching it could make a dragon cry.
****************
"Absolutely humiliating," Francisco scoffed as soon as the door to their room closed. He grabbed a towel and started to furiously dry his head, before throwing it on the floor and and walking over to the mirror.
"Ha! You're the one to talk, well, at least you still get to talk," Puss jumped out of the way of the falling towel and shook the water off of his fur.
"Oh don't be dramatic." Faoncisco didn't look away from the mirror, still trying to get his mustache at least a little back in shape. "You will be out of this place more than in."
"This is true," Puss answered and reached for his boots. Suddenly he started to chuckle quietly.
"What's so funny?"
"'Please, señor, I have a cat?' Really?" Puss looked up at his companion and started to now laugh out loud.
"I'm a nobleman, not an actor!" Francisco frowned at first but quickly joined him in laughter. "Although I must say, that trick of yours with the big sad eyes is really something."
"Ha! That is only one of many talents of Puss in Boots!" He bowed deeply with a proud grin on his face.
"I have to admit," he continued. "We make for a pretty good team. This mission will be a piece of cake."
"Agreed." Francisco returned the smile and reached down to high five his new friend.

Cecelia used to spend summers in Avalor when she was a child. There was nothing she loved more than the views of the bay and the mountains. Okay, maybe there were a few things. Like eating chocolates from La Vida Dolce, the chocolate shop owned by her Tía Abuela Luisa's family. Or music lessons with her Tío Abuelo Francisco. And playing olaball with her cousins Elena, Isabel, and Esteban. Cecelia's favorite drink is lavender lemonade. A common beverage back home in the Magical Forest, but her Tía Lucia makes it special just for her.

Rewatching "Navidad" and noticing right now that contrary to what I remembered, Esteban wasn't the only one who wanted to celebrate a traditional Nochebuena in the palace with just their family. Francisco did too! This is the very first Navidad since their reunion and Shuriki's defeat. Esteban has been waiting 41 (!) years for this day, and he probably thought it would never come. It must have hurt so much when his wish for a traditional family Navidad was immediately shut down by Elena and Luisa and (albeit a bit more conflictedly by Isabel) or that Francisco's agreement with his idea was disregarded.
It's especially intriguing to me, because ordinarily, you would expect Esteban to be all in on the exciting new Navidad celebrations. He can be stuffy and traditional, sure, but he's also extravagant and loves grand, elaborate parties. In this case, however, he vastly prefers a quieter, more intimate Navidad than something new and elaborate and exciting. He doesn't want fireworks or or parades or massive parties; all he wants is simple quality time with the family he spent four decades longing to somehow see again.
To borrow a few lyrics from "Let Love Light the Way," Esteban needs "nothing more than those [he] adore[s]" over the holiday. And it must rankle him so much to receive the seeming confirmation that this isn't enough for the others-- and I feel it could lend itself to the inevitable conclusion that he himself isn't "enough" for the others.
Personally, I feel like Francisco's desire to have their quiet, private Nochebuena celebration comes from a slightly different place than Esteban's. He's naturally a more traditional, reserved person, so he would always prefer simple quality time with his family than a grand function. Additionally, he did not perceive any time passing during the past 41 years, as Esteban did. So this particular Navidad would have less strong of a meaning to him as it did to his grandson who was all alone for four decades. I also do not think he would be fully aware of what this end of the Dark Times means to his grandson. But unlike the others, Francisco does seem to be genuinely trying to understand what Esteban is thinking and feeling.
And even knowing that Francisco can and will never fully understand, Esteban must have felt a little tiny spark of recognition and validation when Francisco too wanted to resume their regular Navidad traditions. These--and by extension, Esteban himself--may not have been "good enough" for Luisa or Elena. But for Francisco, the traditions were more than merely "good enough," they were his first choice.
