HORROR WEEK- FOTD #144 : apple bolete! (exsudoporus frostii)
the apple bolete (also frost's bolete) is a mycorrhizal fungus in the family boletaceae >:-) it typically grows near the hardwood trees of the eastern US, southern mexico & costa rica. it was chosen for horror week due to its appearance being reminiscent of muscle tissue !!
the big question : will it kill me?? nope !! however, although they are edible, they are not recommended for consumption as it is quite easy to confuse them with other red boletes. ^^
Tumblr media Tumblr media
e. frostii description :
"the shape of the cap of the young fruit body ranges from a half sphere to convex, later becoming broadly convex to flat or shallowly depressed, with a diameter of 5–15 cm (2.0–5.9 in). the edge of the cap is curved inward, although as it ages it can uncurl and turn upward. in moist conditions, the cap surface is sticky as a result of its cuticle, which is made of gelatinized hyphae. if the fruit body has dried out after a rain, the cap is especially shiny, sometimes appearing finely areolate (having a pattern of block-like areas similar to cracked, dried mud). young mushrooms have a whitish bloom on the cap surface.
the colour is bright red initially, but fades with age. the flesh is up to 2.5 cm (1.0 in) thick, & ranges in colour from pallid to pale yellow to lemon yellow. the flesh has a variable staining reaction in response to bruising, so some specimens may turn deep blue almost immediately, while others turn blue weakly & slowly.
the tubes comprising the pore surface (the hymenium) are 9–15 mm deep, yellow to olivaceous yellow (mustard yellow), turning dingy blue when bruised. the pores are small (2 to 3 per mm), circular, & until old age a deep red colour that eventually becomes paler. the pore surface is often beaded with yellowish droplets when young (a distinguishing characteristic), & readily stains blue when bruised. the stipe is 4 to 12 cm (1.6 to 4.7 in) long, & 1 to 2.5 cm (0.4 to 1.0 in) thick at its apex. it is roughly equal in thickness throughout its length, though it may taper somewhat toward the top ; some specimens may appear ventricose (swollen in the middle). the stipe surface is mostly red, or yellowish near the base ; it is reticulate — characterized by ridges arranged in the form of a net-like pattern."

i need to know more about pennybun i have fallen deeply in love
PENNY MY BEST FRIEND PENNY!!!!
Tumblr media
(by @/skypiea)
penny is my first tav and i love her. she's a white dragonborn circle of the spores druid. i finished her first playthrough a couple weeks back, and i've started on a second playthrough with her! slightly edited, and now that i understand more about the game and the story i'm refining her character and story. i missed a lot of stuff on that first playthrough!
pennybun's name comes from the mushroom, by the way. i'd decided on that before i knew that there was a mushroom-themed druid circle in this game, i was GOING to choose moon, but, like. it's perfect. penny buns aka porcini aka king bolete aka Boletus edulis are an edible mushroom that symbioses with the roots of pine trees. they're part of my research and they're quite adorable
Tumblr media
she's from a circle of druids located in the shelterwood- a dense forest near baldur's gate. she grew up in the city proper- or at least, on the edges of it- before moving out to the woods to pursue life as a druid.
she's solidly good-aligned- as my first playthrough, her story is kind of the best-case-scenario for everything, savescumming the hell out of some fights (good god the last light fight with marcus). everybody gets their good ending, everybody gets saved, that kind of deal.
she had a generally good relationship with everyone in the party, but gale, wyll, and karlach are her best mates for sure. i missed out on romancing karlach the first go around, but we're doing it on penny's second save file. it's happening.
Tumblr media
she's also quite close with shadowheart, especially after the events of act ii. her relationship with lae'zel is more tense.. but i'm still working on figuring out that exact trajectory- missing a lot of lae'zel's storyline was one of the biggest mistakes i made in the first go-around. she and astarion never get close, but there's not any malice there, either.
she's good friends with jaheira, the two get along like a house on fire, and she looks up to jaheira a lot. she didn't have a lot of time to get to know minsc and boo, but they were plenty friendly in the short time they crossed paths. halsin, i need to work on, i also kind of fucked up his stuff first go-around by neglecting to fix the shadowlands. to be updated when i reach act ii in Penny The Sequel.
overall, penny's a big ol goody-two-shoes. she wants to help as many people as she possibly can, and feels a massive weight on her shoulders because of it, having been thrust into this leadership role by apparent pure chance.
Tumblr media
while i'm still working it out, the central theme of pennybun's story is trust, and who she puts it in. an early decision i made before knowing anything about the story was that penny trusts the Mysterious Dream Guardian completely and totally, which made for some EXTREMELY fun character moments later on- utilizing the tadpoles (her and gale both), becoming partial illithid, and eventually in act 3 losing her trust in and culminating with her turning on the emperor, plus her own ceremorphosis to wield the netherstones against the netherbrain.
Tumblr media
gear-wise, she uses the default druid armor for most of the game, switching to the armor of the sporekeeper in act 3. she assembles the mourning frost in the underdark in act 1 and it remains her favored weapon for the rest of the game. she also wears the key of the ancients, and just before the start of the finale gains the nymph cloak.
Tumblr media
other assorted Penny Facts:
she keeps a detailed log of every camp dinner the group has. good food is very important
she has a soft spot for parasites. part of why she was receptive to the idea of utilizing the tadpoles, and also part of why she lets astarion take a bite from time to time.
she got her eye poked out by volo
she has a -1 int modifier
she's a lot keener on necromancy than you might expect a druid to be. she views necromancy and the undead (for the most part) as a natural part of the cycle of life- after all, everything will eventually return to the dirt to be eaten by the fungi and the other decomposers, no matter how prolonged it is.
it is imperative that all her friends (karlach excluded for reason of cool hair) wear fun hats. ive posted about The Hat Tax before but everyone in the party gets a funny hat. it's so important.
Tumblr media
she's my best friend and i love her

The first one (and bottom left) is the most handsome bolete I have ever seen, Butyriboletus frostii. It bruises blue on contact and secretes yellow droplets on its red pore surface. Mushrooms can be so dramatic!

welcome to “assigning (tfp) transformers mushrooms”! this is a rather long post, so i'll be putting it under a readmore. this is only the decepticons, since i hit photo limit—i'll reblog with all the autobots in a few minutes, so you might want to wait for that
soundwave: indigo pinkgill. such an elegant, dignified species! with a cap surface ranging from smooth to finely scaled, this unassuming, indigo-blue to almost black mushroom native to most of eurasia is a perfect fit for the unassuming, but possibly deadly, decepticon communications officer and spymaster!
Tumblr media
(indigo pinkgill by peter creed)
starscream: what better fit for the ambitious, vibrant decepticon SIC than the scaly tangerine mushroom? a species first noted in zanzibar, its fruiting bodies are rather small in comparison to other species, but what they lack in size, they make up for in lustrous gold colouring, with almost-spiny protrusions from their caps.
Tumblr media
(scaly tangerine mushroom by ShaumingLo on project noah)
knock out: what better fungi to fit this flashy red mech with a not-so-secret lethality than russula emetica? known colloquially as “the sickener”, this species is poisonous in its natural form, but, despite this, was often eaten in eastern europe after boiling to remove its toxins. while both it and the decepticon medic may be grudgingly tolerated, they form an important part of the woodland ecosystems of eurasia, and northern africa and america.
Tumblr media
(russula emetica by MichalPL on wikipedia)
arachnid: rosy larch bolete. mainly found on larches in the western region of north america, these alluring, dusky pink mushrooms also have been reported to live on pines in china and taiwan. while the fruiting bodies may appear delicate and tempting, they’re said to be incredibly bitter.
Tumblr media
(rosy larch bolete by debbie viess)
shockwave: this mystifying and slightly intimidating mech could be none other than the oak bracket! while this species initially grows at the bases of living trees, its presence is often fatal to them. when found on urban and garden trees, it often leads to preventative felling. however, they’re also said to have antibiotic properties!
Tumblr media
(oak bracket by juniors bildarchiv gmbh/alamy stock photo)
breakdown: what could fit better for this solid, determined mech than the apple tooth? while originally fairly common and found on old apple trees in orchards, the felling of so many of these orchards has made it increasingly rare, even becoming a part of the red list of endangered fungal species in some countries. its simplistic shape, formed of thousands of what appear to be fungal stalactites crowded together, nonetheless is incredibly breathtaking once given a second glance.
Tumblr media
(apple tooth fungus by lucie zíbarová)
dreadwing: for an honourable and surprisingly elegant mech, what could fit better than hericium coralloides? this beautiful, frost-like mushroom is prized in many asian countries, where it can be found gift-wrapped in flamboyant packages.
Tumblr media
(hericium coralloides by michael wood)
megatron: violet potato fungus. the simplistic form of this mushroom reminds one of megatron’s early days as a miner. however, like the mech himself, it has surprising traits as well—a striking purple, the insides of its truffle-like fruiting bodies are a rich, olive- to dark greyish-brown.

List of Prefixes
Note: This list may be subject to changes in the future and the names presented do not have descriptions. For further information on most of these prefixes, please check out this link.
Prefixes are the first part of a warrior’s name, and the part that, barring some physical damage or massive change, will be kept until their death. A prefix is chosen for a kit at birth based on their physical appearance - so, for example, a ginger kitten may be named after a fox, or a rose, or something else with the same color as their pelt. Damage-based prefixes are listed at the bottom, but they are usually only given at the request of the warrior who has sustained that damage. It is considered cruel to name a kit after a deformity that they were born with.
There is no priority tier like with suffixes; the only important thing is that the name fits the kit and is not demeaning in any way. As such, all names here are meant to physically describe the color of a kit and nothing more, with the exception of the damage names which are, again, meant for willing adults. Special other traits desired or required for the name, such as marking or size, are added on in parenthesis.

I would like to introduce you to one of the universe’s strangest life forms: mushrooms. These little (or not so little) fellows come in many shapes and forms, some of them in colors that are reminiscent of a Judith Clarke illustration of Pixie Hollow or setting in the Lord of the Rings, while others seem to belong more to the macabre side of imagination, like witches spells and assassin’s poisons. I have a deep love for fungus of all sorts, and think it would be fantastic to see more in fantasy books. Here are a few of my favorites.
1. Wood Ear Mushroom (Auricularia auricula-judae)
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the Wood Ear Mushroom. This lovely little fellow is often shaped remarkably like a human’s ear--who ever said walls had ears? Trees have actually got them. Imagine a forest filled with these mushrooms, listening to everything from the sound of elk bellowing in the distance to the breathing of a toad. It is an edible fungus, though I’d avoid it if I were you...you might find yourself hearing strange voices in the middle of the night, and whispers where there is only silence.
2.  Parrot Toadstool (Gliophorus psittacinus)
Tumblr media
These parrots toadstools look like they’ve come right out of Willy Wonka’s factory, though you don’t want to take a taste, not unless you want a gastrointestinal disorder. I imagine these green-capped lads would belong nicely in a fantasy setting. They really should glow.
3. Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus)
Tumblr media
A personal favorite, this shroom goes by the name of shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane (for obvious reasons). It isn't uncommon, often found on lawns, along gravel roads, and in waste areas. The fun (and slightly creepy) thing about them is that they dissolve soon after being picked, turning black and falling apart, precisely the sort of thing you’d expect a protagonist to get poisoned by during their impossible journey to save the world. Only, these won't kill you. They are edible, but NEVER EAT WILD MUSHROOMS, as these are often mistaken for the magpie ink cap, which WILL kill you.
4.  Frost's Bolete (Exsudoporus frostii)
Tumblr media
Apparently one day a mushroom decided it needed to look like a piece of meat, and this monstrosity appeared. Are those veins? Tendons? Does the Frost’s Bolete consume carrion and take on the look of its meal? Unfortunately, no. This meaty-looking man is just an impersonator, but would be a great addition to the aftermath of a battle...maybe they grow from corpses?
5. Phellodon sinclairii
Tumblr media
No, this is not a delicious fairy-tart with whipped cream and syrup. No wonder it is called strawberries and cream, bleeding Hydnellum, red-juice tooth, and Devil's tooth. If I ran across this in the woods I don’t know if I’d be able to keep from taking a bite, but the beautiful red droplets are not syrup, but guttation droplets that contain a red pigment.
Lightning round coming later!
