Yu Wu was not as masterfully put together as 2ha, mostly because of the terrible pacing, balance, and weak characters.

Mo Xi, as a main character and as a love interest, is too insecure to stand beside a character like Gu Mang. Gu Mang is meant to go through so much shit that feels entirely unnecessary and is a direct result of Mo Xi’s weak convictions and indecisiveness. He can’t decide who he can trust, can’t decide how to act, can’t even decide what he, himself, wants, and it leads him to making such nonsensical decisions even up to the final act of the book. Speaking of, the final “moral dilemma” of the book had absolutely no stakes: it was literally a choice between 1) do the thing you always secretly wanted that’ll conveniently also save the world or 2) do the thing that will make you unhappy and destroy the world, but hey! you get to be immortal to experience despair for eternity as you rule a dead world! Wtf kind of dilemma is that??? The antagonists are actual scum villains, but one is redeemed because his mom was a little mean to him as a kid??? Shi Mei wasn’t even redeemed in 2ha, and he had an actual tragic backstory, so wtf??? So I couldn’t even find interest from the fucking villains.

Balance was shit. Why are we spending hundreds of pages in fluff land watching Mo Xi pretend to care about giving Gu Mang chores, meanwhile the final battle is approaching? Why does fluff land have as many pages as major story-pushing arcs, when just about nothing that happens in those domestic sideplots translate to material implications in the rest of the story outside of introducing other characters? And this is in every arc! Major suspense and energy build-up is squandered by the insertion of these domestic moments that do not matter in any way and don’t even serve to flesh out character. The same exact shit happens in every one of them: Mo Xi starts to be nice to Gu Mang, some outsider gets mad about it, Mo Xi realizes that he shouldn’t be nice to Gu Mang because people will get suspicious, Mo Xi is mean to Gu Mang which causes him to remember he’s “still mad,” Mo Xi’s callousness leads to Gu Mang being tortured in some way that reminds Mo Xi that he actually “still loves him.” Repeat ad infinitum.

And because balance was shit, pacing was also shit. Felt like most of the story was me reading a whole lot of nothing. I only perked up when action was happening, so either when another character took center stage away from Mo Xi, or when we were getting into Gu Mang’s past. Because Mo Xi is not a strong enough character to hold narrative interest. People wanna talk shit about mxtx LIs? Mo Xi is the actual main character of this novel, but his only redeeming quality is that the amnesiac LI with an overwritten personality turning him into a naive torture-magnet loves him. Said LI is more interesting than him—and almost every other character in the story—in every way.

The defintion of hell is knowing a show is incredibly well-received in its first season, but if people don’t become machines churning out tweets, content, and rewatching 24/7, there’s no likelihood it’ll get a chance to tell its whole story. This shit is madness. Shows in different genres shouldn’t have to pit-battle for dominance. First seasons are MEANT to be baselines establishing worlds and characters, not complete storylines. The idea that this golden age of television has turned into “get it done in one or get out” is revolting.

I kept thinking of little baby man Phantom and the potential of Danny being an actual baby of the Infinite Realms. However, he’s more snake teenager than itty bitty Little Baby Man edition, cause I think it’d be so funny to just — imagine this teenage snake curled up in a summoning circle, obviously having been taking a nap and looking up with his big green, sleepy eyes and Constantine just stares and freaks because, “THATS A WHOLE ASS BABY, PUT IT BACK!”

But they can’t because apparently the summoning was more of a ‘knock knock I’m a babysitter’ and Danny’s ghost parent decided that this was the perfect time to have some time for themselves if Heroes were so willing to take care of Danny for a little while.

Another take — mainly in reference to a different post about Klarion actually just being a toddler of the infinite realms with no ideas on how to human and thinks him fighting with heroes is just a play date — zooms into the human realm where the heroes are and just goes, “Hey I’m dropping my baby sibling onto you guys cause my dad got mad last time Danny got hurt by the humans I hang with. So here you go, I’ll pick him up later.”

A teenage snake Danny is dropped into a hero’s arms where he mainly grumbles and then shifts to better take a nap. Klarion drops the baby essentials at them with no further explanations other then “here’s their favorite blanket, if they get fussy taco them; here’s the baby milk make sure it’s -200 F, they have an ice core, etc.” and then just DISAPPEARS after leaving what amounts to a month old infant in human heroes care.

shiv was not being altruistic nor intellectually self-interested when she voted against kendall. that was pure raw visceral desperation to maintain some semblance of dignity that she felt kendall being ceo would shred her of. sometimes people do not act in other people’s best interests or their own best interests. sometimes people do the wrong thing for the wrong reasons just because it feels like the right, the only, thing to do. shiv could not let kendall be ceo. she just couldn’t. not because she wanted to sacrifice herself to “stop the cycle,” not because she made a calculation and decided tom was her best interest — because the thought of kendall being ceo and acting like That the rest of their lives when shiv earned that job, she fucking earned it, that was too much to fucking bear. watching him sit in dad’s chair, conduct that vote, grin with entitlement and cockiness and certainty — seeing that elicited a visceral painful all-consuming sensation not dissimilar to overwhelming nausea that, summed up in two words, would simply be: fuck. no. she couldn’t live with that. she just couldn’t. it’s not kind. it’s not smart. it’s just human. painfully, destructively human. because sometimes, that’s all there is to it. not just for shiv, but for everyone. god knows roman and kendall have had those same feelings, made those same self-destructing yet necessary-feeling decisions throughout the show. why does it have to be different for shiv? why can’t she be painfully destructively human, prone to impulsive ill-conceived viscerally felt actions, like everyone else? why are we incapable of allotting her the same nuance and humanity (the good and the bad), the same trauma-informed self-destructive life-ruining hamartias, as we do her brothers? why can’t we fit a whole woman in our heads?

thinking about connor in prague saying "dad's theory was you got two fighting dogs, you send the weak one away, you punish the weak one." in relation to this episode, and the way the siblings view abuse inside their own family.

shiv and kendall and their belief that connor and roman are the weak dogs that got the brunt of logan's worst behavior, because abuse is reserved for the kids who can't behave - the ones who aren't smart and mature enough to make it in the world. abuse evokes pity, because abuse is what happens when you expect too much from people who obviously aren't capable of more.

and then they go forward in life, believing that they're just naturally more intelligent and more capable than connor and roman, as if being raised seeing what happens to you if you aren't a perfect child wasn't the entire point of the "punish the weak dog" mentality that logan instilled in them. the looming threat implied behind any praise they do receive that tacitly tells them "you're not like roman and connor" because everyone knows what happens to roman and connor.

the absolute height of the rich capitalist mindset. "we're succeeding because of our own merit, and other people fail because they don't have what it takes" when in reality they're succeeding because of arbitrary rules made up by someone who knows that infighting makes meaner dogs.

Danny, thanks to a recent invention his parents made found himself as a tiny fucking whisp (Think of Venti's true form from Genshin Impact, he looks like that). Not only that, when his parents were working on something to turn him back to normal, Vlad just had to be a prick and try and capture him.

Safe to say, he was not fucking impressed.

So he ran into the zone, trying to hide out before suddenly being fucking summoned to some random place in front of a bunch of really dressed people who looked like they were going to a Halloween party but fell into a ditch and then got rained on and slipped in the mud trying to get out of said ditch.

Also, it smelt pretty bad.

Then a group of also oddly dressed people burst through the window and beat them up, with one of them screaming at the others to hold them back while he tries and restart the ritual because it obviously failed.

Which, rude.

He's the one that called for him not that other way around. The prick.

Not wanting to go back he sorta just, floated out of whatever they had going on in and standing off the side as the guy gawked at him before getting punched in the face with some kinda, blasty, thing by some guy in a coat.

Said guy who then proceeded to say that the guys who summoned him obviously botched the ritual to summon the ghost king, as it said prince instead.

Which yea, he's the prince so what.

Which they obviously botched too because that's an ice elemental, a rather weak one by the looks of it but an ice elemental nonetheless.

Which. Wow. Danny has never been so fucking insulted in his life.

So he very obviously had the right to freeze the guy's entire body below the head in retaliation before leaving. He unfortunately got caught by magician lady which, cool, but also like let him go.

He just rolled with it honestly when they brought him to their 'hall of justice' or whatever and being stared at by a round table of what he's starting to think are superheroes.

He'll take being stared down over Vlad any day of the year anyways.
