Bucky’s Girls

Fury wasn’t sure what to expect when he knocked on the bright blue door.

It takes a minute for footsteps to sound; hands on his hips, Fury eyes the boxwood wreath, the bright blossoms spilling from the window flower boxes, and the porch swing squeaking slightly in the wind. More domestic than he expected. But somehow he's not surprised, either.

The blue door opens, and Fury tries very hard not to look at the pink-jeweled tiara on Bucky Barnes’ head. Doesn’t succeed. Forces his eyes back to Barnes’.

“Oh, hello,” Bucky says, and a grin stretches across his face. It throws Fury for a loop, almost - he’s not used to Barnes smiling, even after all this time. You’d done quite the number on the man.

“I have a mission for you,” Fury says without preamble. “Where’s the missus?”

“At the store,” Bucky says promptly. “She’ll be back in a half-hour. Come on in.”

Fury bristles, but steps over the threshold and onto a woven rug over the hardwood floor. Bucky locks the door behind him, and after a moment, Fury hangs up his trenchcoat on the coat rack, right next to two pink rain jackets; one patterned with flowers and one with rubber ducks.

“Daddy!” comes a shriek from further inside the little house. “The cookies are ready!”

“Be right there!” Bucky calls back, and then shoots Fury another grin. “Hungry?”

“How many licked fingers have made it into the batter?” Fury asks, not missing a beat. Bucky chortles, and waves him inward.

“You’ll see.”

The cookies are imaginary, but the twin girls with bright Bucky-blue eyes and flickering Agent 28-dimples are not. Fury blinks as Bucky sits down on the ground at a small table, laden with empty cups and saucers. It’s all a bit freaky - the Winter Soldier solemnly accepting a pink teacup from his daughter with his metal hand, and pretending to sip from it. And then blowing on it, because “it’s too hot.” But Fury is used to not being frazzled by things that hurt his head. And Bucky Barnes, surrounded by stuffed animals and sequin pillows, is one of those things.

One of the girls stands up in her purple tutu, and holds up a turquoise teacup to Fury. “Thank you for coming,” she says politely. “I hope you like mint.”

“I do,” Fury says gravely, and pinches the handle of the cup between his fingers. “I didn’t realize we were having a party, otherwise I would’ve brought my tiara.”

The girl giggles, and the one still sitting gasps. “We have an extra! I’ll go get it!”

“No, Winnie - I wanna get it - ”

“Winnie will get it,” Bucky says firmly. “Beck, I need a refill.” And a narrowed look is shot to the elder daughter at Fury’s side, who scampers back to the table to serve her dad more “tea.”

Fury crouches down, and Winifred plops a purple tiara with feathers right on his head. She grins impishly, (why does the resemblance to 28’s mischievous smile make him so nervous?), before bounding back to the party.

“Come sit,” Rebecca says imperiously to Fury. She scoots closer to her dad, freeing up about a foot of space between her and Winnie.

He has no choice but to obey.

It’s the sight you come home to a little while later - Fury is thankful he’s not in the habit of blushing, because the sight of your raised eyebrows in the doorway of the girls’ room while they dish out imaginary cake next, just might have set him over edge. A previously-unseen cat winds itself around your legs, yowling in greeting.

“Hello, Nick,” you say with amusement, as Winnie runs up with a plate of cake for you, which you accept.

“28,” he says stiffly.

“He has a mission for me,” Bucky says offhand, as a teddy bear/Becca gives him a massive squeeze around the next. His nose crinkles, and he pats the bear on the back as Becks giggles.

“Well, it’s getting late,” you say after swallowing the “cake.” The cat sniffs at the empty plate. “Stay for dinner, Nick?”

Fury pretends to think about it. “As long as it’s something good. I’ve been spoiled with all these rich snacks this afternoon.” Winnie hides a giggle behind a hand, and Fury sends her a deadpan wink. Bucky snorts.

“It’s always good,” you assure him. “And you know us - we never talk missions on an empty stomach. Makes us reckless.”

“It’s true,” Bucky agrees.

“Sounds like a plan, then.”

Becca hops a bunny into Fury’s lap next, and he pets its soft ears.

He’s still brushing off purple fuzz from his black shirt after dinner; when he’s full of pasta and it’s time for ice cream to be passed around. The cat is meowing on the ground, but is generally ignored as the girls start slurping up their dessert. Fury eats his with more decorum.

“No,” Bucky says firmly to the cat. “No ice cream for you.” It yowls again, tail flicking in the air, and saunters off.

A spoonful of chocolate ice cream drips onto Rebecca’s shirt - you reach for a napkin to pass to her, but she scoops it up with her fingers, practically shoving her entire fist in her mouth to lick clean as Bucky’s eyes twitch.

"Honey, let's wash that shirt yeah?" he tries, making as if to stand.

"I'm saving it for later, Daddy."

“But honey…”

“No. Dad.”

Your eyes widen, and Bucky shakes his head at you. Fury doesn’t laugh, even though he wants to. The Winter Soldier...at the mercy of his girls.

Fury is really glad he made the trip upstate, even if the house is a little far from the freeway.

When the girls are sound asleep in bed a little while later, the cat comes back to wind itself around Bucky’s shoulders in apparent forgiveness. The dining table gets wiped down, and Fury pulls out his phone to set up a projection at last. The sun is gone outside the windows, replaced by a purply dusk as you turn on the light above the table.

“I know him,” you say, sitting back down beside Bucky with an orange as you nod your head towards the flickering photo in the projection. “He runs a trafficking ring in Shanghai. Almost got him once, but he slipped past us.” You hold out a hand to Bucky; absently he pulls a knife from his jeans and passes it over to you.

“He looks familiar,” Bucky admits. “Don’t remember hearing about him in Shanghai, though. Thought it was Madame Zizi that did the bulk of trafficking there.”

“After she was arrested, Mr. Ping picked up the market,” Fury says. “I had six agents trailing him, but last week four of them disappeared. The Avengers are split between that government problem in Lebanon and the UN conference in New York City, otherwise I would be interrupting your little setup here.”

Your lips twitch, as a curl of orange peel falls onto the table.

“I can take care of him,” Bucky says, but his eyes are on you. “Got me a team?”

“As many agents as you need. Any specialties.”

“Mandarin speakers, a couple men that can pass as creepy buyers,” Bucky sighs. You slice off a sliver of orange, and hold it out to him - he leans over to slurp it right off the knife, and Fury raises a brow.

“I can take care of that,” he says mildly. “I was hoping to leave tonight, if at all possible…”

The kitchen is quiet. You’re still smiling, as you glance over at Bucky’s rueful expression. And slurp up your own slice of orange. “You have to be back in two weeks for the girls’ spring concert,” you tell him. “They’d be devastated if you missed it.”

“I know. Two weeks should be plenty of time to take down a gang leader, right babe?” Bucky says lightly, and Fury blinks - he’s seen enough jabbering to know that some very real feelings were being suppressed here.

“You could do it in one, if you had me,” you tease back.

“I don’t doubt it.” Eyes locked with yours, he takes another sliver of orange, and your smile stretches across your face. Fury coughs.

“I can give you a ride back to the city,” he offers - a split second of silence that stretches through the entire kitchen with a shimmering sense of regret - and then Bucky nods.

The porch swing creaks, and Fury laces his hands behind his hands as he watches the stars come out above the treetops. In the yard dozens of lightning bugs are like stars on the ground; green and glowing as cicadas buzz distantly. Apart from that, it’s quiet; the nearest neighbors are at least a mile away, and town is five, through foothills and forests. He likes it. Waiting for Bucky to suit up isn’t so hard on his nerves with such a view…

Finally the blue door opens, and a porch light flickers on. All geared up and armed to the teeth, Bucky’s lips are pressed in a grim line as he tucks some stray hair behind his ears. You follow, not smiling for once, and wait in the doorway as Fury stands.

“I appreciate you taking this on at the last minute,” he says - to Bucky and you. “We’ll get you back before your concert.”

“Thank you, Nick,” you tell him. Bucky turns back, and squeezes your hand. Fury looks away, and starts down the porch steps. After a moment, Barnes follows.

Not for the first time, you check your watch as the babbling excitement builds in the auditorium. Two minutes 'till showtime, if it’s punctual. Probably won’t be. A shame, really - tonight’s a night that you’d appreciate some delay. The Agent part of your brain throws out a few options to pause the show: find the electric panel and smash up some circuits; break the accompanist’s ankle; and a classic - pull the fire alarm. Knee jiggling, you glance at the clock on the wall - one minute ‘til.

The parents in the audience around you are quieting as teachers get up to close the doors. But from behind there’s an “oops!”, followed by a gasp and a polite “excuse me” - the last of which in a familiar voice that makes a smile curl your lips, and a shiver to crawl seductively up your spine. Then the doors clang shut, and a familiar tread comes down the aisle.

Even though you know he won’t have any issues picking you out of the audience, it’s difficult to resist turning ‘round to watch his approach - so you don’t - and twist in your seat to send a grin back. The lights are already dimmed, and Bucky’s hulking shadow draws near. Mutters break out as he passes, and when he’s about ten feet away, you realize he’s still wearing his combat gear.

“Sheesh!” you whisper, as he ducks down to slide into the seat you’ve been saving next to you. “Couldn’t have changed first?” A ripe, slightly barnyard-y scent is coming off of him - Bucky’s face breaks into a grin, highlighting a splatter of dried blood across his face and neck. It’s a tough call between admonishing him and laughing - so you cover your mouth with your hand, and giggle.

The lights on the stage go up, a scattering, nervous sort of applause breaks out, and the burn of stares on the back of your head only deepens your amusement. Bucky’s metal arm goes over your shoulder (probably reflecting everywhere, but you aren’t looking), and he tugs you close to whisper into your ear.

“Hey, babe. I made it.”

“You cut it close,” you murmur back, as the choir teacher mounts the stage. “When was the last time you showered? You stink!”

Bucky blinks. “Um - when did I leave, again?”

“Two weeks ago!”

“Yeah. It was then.”

Wrinkling your nose, you give a soft snort as he tugs you close, and presses a kiss to the top of your head.

“At least I made it,” he growls into your ear, and as his fingers find yours to wind through them, a few more shivers race across your skin, and a little sigh escapes your lips.

“Yeah, you’ve shown up to your daughters’ elementary school chorus concert in full combat gear and blood stains,” you tell him out of the corner of your mouth. “I’m going to tell everyone. You’ll never live this down.”

The first stream of kids - the youngest class, with Becks and Winnie in the very center as the tallest - start filing on the stage. Bucky’s fingers squeeze yours, and his nose nuzzles into your hairline.

“Missed me?” he murmurs.

“So much. We all did.”

The children are all lined up, and you grin as Rebecca nudges Winifred and jerks her head towards Bucky, and both their faces light up.

“Worth it,” Bucky whispers, and gives them a little wave.

“Yeah,” you whisper, and snuggle deeper into his one-armed embrace. “It is.”

Top 20 BEST Animated Series of the 2010s-13th place

What happens when you mix Looney Tunes' quality of animation with Spongebob Squarepants' weirdness and the creativity of a Dr. Suess book?

You get yet another underrated cartoon in the last decade. That’s what.

#13-Wander Over Yonder (2013-2016)

The Plot: A wandering weirdo named Wander and his best friend/protector/noble steed Sylvia travels the galaxy, sharing kindness and spreading the message that it never hurts to help everywhere they go. But in their quest, they must face dangerous villains such as Lord Hater and his army of watchdogs (The watchdogs aren’t what you think they are). Will the villainous Lord Hater destroy Wander and his attempts to spread happiness, or will Wonder make Hater his new pal? I don’t know. The show got canceled after a second season. Still, I think it’s the best bet on it being a yes.

The one thing about a show like Wander Over Yonder is that it is nothing like most shows you will find on this list. And I can sum up those reasons into four categories: story, comedy, characters, and animation.

Let’s start with the story because, until season two, there really isn’t one. It remains as a somewhat episodic show where the continuity is nearly non-existent. Occasionally a character will bring up an old event, or an old villain will reappear. But a viewer doesn’t need a full understanding of every episode to watch a single episode. Even when the show begins to have a story arc in season two, knowledge of previous events isn’t entirely essential to enjoy the episode you’re currently watching. Because while the prior information may add to the enjoyment, it never takes it away. In fact, Wander Over Yonder may just be the first show to change its technique of storytelling while still remaining true to its roots. Mainly since its roots focused more on comedy than anything else.

Let me make one thing clear: Wander Over Yonder, above anything else, is a comedy. It’s not a comedy that slowly becomes a drama. It’s a show that balances comedy and drama, and it is certainly not a show that will take itself too seriously. Even in the more “serious” episodes, Wander Over Yonder makes a point to have people laugh first and make them cry later. In fact, the drama has more of an impact because viewers can build a connection through laughing with the characters, thus caring when they meet a moment that’s tragic and heartbreaking. And laugh they will because this show can be pretty funny at times. Keep in mind that it has a very random sense of humor, so maybe don’t get too excited if that isn’t your cup of tea. And even if it is, there is a small problem you need to be aware of about the show’s comedy. When a joke isn’t funny, there will be another joke not far behind to make up for the lack. However, there are times when the show lingers on a specific gag or even repeats the same exact one throughout the entire episode. And it is always painful to watch. This doesn’t happen often, and it isn’t that bad when done well, but even then, it can get a little annoying to fans of the show.

Speaking of a little annoying, let’s talk about our main character Wander. Wander is a character who strives to do the right thing no matter what the cost. When done well, a personality like that is admirable but can come across as annoying when done wrong. Wander is no exception. On the one hand, I honestly find his determination to do the right thing makes him a good role model for kids. And it’s not like he doesn’t have a reason for why he goes out of his way to help others. He genuinely does the right thing because it actually makes him feel good to help. However, that doesn’t change when Wander’s kind attitude can get a little out of hand. There are moments when he actually puts friends and civilizations in danger to do a good deed. Everything all works out in the end, but that doesn’t change how close things can get. Even worse, Wander rarely changes his approach to doing good deeds because the writers goes out of their way to prove him right. Whenever Wander has his good nature challenged or even taken advantage of, he still does the exact same thing a couple episodes later. Thankfully, he at least has a couple of good characters to bounce off of in his antics.

There are two characters in the show that Wander interacts with the most: Sylvia and Hater. Sylvia is Wander’s best friend and acts as the muscle/voice of reason to his Wanderness. Their overall interactions are either hilarious or downright heartwarming to watch. I especially love how Sylvia goes out of her way to keep Wander safe, as it shows a friendship that goes beyond farther than other best buddies in most shows on this list. In fact, they're more like a family that’s a mix between mother and son/brother and sister dynamic. However, while I love seeing Wander and Sylvia interact, that is nothing compared to seeing Wander and Hater together. These two have a rivalry that seems to be Spongebob and Squidward’s dynamic, treated as Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd's. It is funny to watch these two whenever they share a screen together, and it’s this interaction that brings out the best of Wander. He doesn’t ever want to hurt Hater, but it’s just Hater who mostly hurts himself. Wander also fully understands that Lord Hater is a villain but is driven by the belief that there’s some good inside those bones. But what surprises me is the fact that Lord Hater works well as a character even without Wander.

Wander Over Yonder does something I rarely see in which it has episodes that star both the heroes and the villains. Lord Hater is up there as one of the funniest incompetent villains within animated shows. His attempts to become the greatest in the galaxy never fails to make me laugh, as it pretty much lines up with Wile E Coyote's attempts to get the Road Runner. He will lose, and you know he’s going to no matter what, but it’s still hilarious to watch how. Hater gets even funnier when you compare him to Commander Peepers, who acts as Hater’s second in comand. Peepers is the logic to Hater’s fury and childishness, which presents a dynamic similar yet different to Wander and Sylvia’s. Which is another reason why I like how the show focuses on both the heroes and villains, as it makes the villains seem more like dynamic characters than most foes in other shows.

But none of this praise holds a candle to the show’s animation. Not only is it fluid and expressive, but the show has the underrated rubber hose style of animation that needs more love. Characters can pull random objects out of nowhere, survive the craziest of things, and seem to have their own form of gravity around them. In fact, it is Wander Over Yonder that showed me how rare this type of animation is. Most animated shows in the last decade seem to focus on looking realistic rather than looking like a cartoon. This is weird because one would think that more cartoons would aim to actually be more, well, cartoony. This is why Wander Over Yonder has some of the best animations out of most shows in the last decade, all because of it being unique. Even when the show goes through a noticeable downgrade in its second season, it is nowhere near as bad as Star V.S. the Forces of Evil. It’s still expressive and cartoony, but not just as fluid as it once was in season one.

However, despite all the praise I can give this show, you should remember it still got canceled. Was it because of bad writing? No. Was it because the animation was too expensive? Understandably so if it was, but no. Was it because of bad ratings? Well, it did get bad ratings, but apparently, that wasn’t the reason. Apparently, the reason was that Disney thought that only two seasons were enough. This is a shame because not only did it seem like the show was gaining ground by season two, but season three even promised to reveal some long-awaited backstories for the characters. Regardless, Disney still owns the show, and the decision to bring it back (that is, to say, if they’ll ever bring it back) is entirely up to them.

Wander Over Yonder is not a perfect show. Compared to everything else in the last decade, I can see how most people won’t be as invested as others. But if you love episodic storytelling, random comedy, great dynamic characters, and some fantastic animation, then trust me when I say that it wouldn’t hurt to help to give this show a chance.

(Also, is it weird to anybody else that this isn’t on Disney+, yet? It’s on Hulu, but not Disney+ for some reason. It’s starting to get to the point where I think Disney’s ashamed of this show, which I don’t understand.)

[FN/mild HR] Bunny Doll.

It hated heights. It really did. But it couldn't exactly tell the girl that, could it now? To the humans, it was an object. It should have been an object. It didn't know how it could be how it was anyway. The other toys like it couldn't move when the human's weren't watching.

How long ago exactly it had changed into this, how long ago the hunger started, it didn't know. Time was strange to it. It knew human things and concepts, but didn't know where they came from. So, it sat there on its shelf, where it had been for a long time now. There was dust in the fur, covering its body. Not that the body was remarkable. It had looked at itself in the girls, no, Jenna's mirror once. Its body was old, worn down. It looked like an animal called a rabbit, but one ear was torn off. One button eye was drooping, the stitches coming loose and its belly was missing some stuffing. It was ugly, in its own eyes.

Once, it had liked being hugged by the girl. In the last while however, the girl had put it away. All her toys were put on a high shelf in the corner of her chambers. Now, a sword, a shield and a knife were on the table next to her bed. She was growing up, and fast. So was the rabbit. Once, it had loved hugs. Now, it wanted something else. Had wanted for the past while. The hunger grew with every passing night.

But here it sat, on its high shelf, positioned so it could see out the stone window into the courtyard below. Humans milled about, men and women in grey armor sparring in with sword and spears, their tips alight with fire. Snow fell from the sky, and dusk was already coming. Still, they sparred.

And it sat. When night came the bonds that held it loosened a little, letting it move about on its misshapen legs. Never while humans were watching though. Never while they watched. Its body was stronger than it should have been, in all the right places. A doll had no business walking, the world tried to tell it. It didn't listen. It was hungry. Tonight, it would slake that.

Night came and the fortress quieted down. It never truly slept, but most of the humans went to their chambers. The girl was asleep in her bed, turned away from it. Slowly, the bunny doll stood, legs stronger than they should have been. It jumped from the shelf and landed with a silent thump. The girl stirred, but went back to sleep when no further sounds were heard. Her door was closed. The hound-flap below it wasn't.

It emerged into the hallways and began to quickly make for the back stairs. It knew the castle, and was headed to the kitchens. It would need something sharp. Suddenly, a whine, increasing in intensity, filled its mind. Something was coming. All but bounding now, it shoved its body into a darkened doorway just as it collapsed. It lay there, helpless, as the sound of armored feet echoed through the corridor. They came and passed, never having seen the stuffed toy lying on the ground. When the human was gone, it could move again. Heaving itself upright, it tottered onwards.

It hated the hound. Really did, it realized. It took away so much of the girl's time. The old beast was large, with drooping jowls and rheumatic eyes. Its teeth were yellowing and it just snored all day. Still, it hated it, for some reason. A hate too strong for it to be the fact that the girl moved all her toys away once the dog began growling at them. Or that it almost tore it apart once. The beast had taken its ear off before the girl had pulled it away.

But the hound was old, and its senses weakening. There were other, younger hounds around the fortress day and night, but only this one inside.

It crept up from behind, careful to keep quiet, the large knife wrapped in its paws. It was heavy, but the doll was strong. Strong enough to carry this. The hunger grew inside it as it crept. Ever so slowly, through the hallway where the hound liked to rest in the evening sun. It approached, and the hound began to growl softly in its sleep, the sound becoming louder with every step it took. The whine didn't return to it, however. The hound was not human, so the rules did not apply. It held the knife steadily, point up to stab as it approached.

As it took the last step, and brought the knife up, the hound's eyes shot open, bloodshot as it glared at the doll. It did not wait. Even as the hound drew in breath to howl, it stabbed it through the eye, into the brain. It died with a whimper. Pulling the bloody knife from the corpse, it set to work. Here was fresh meat, and its hunger yearned to be fulfilled.

Some time later, it was back on its shelf, watching the girl rise from her bed as an alarm went out. The hound had been found then. A corpse missing most of its pieces. The bunny felt full, satisfied. It didn't know how eating had worked, since it was made of cloth, but putting meat near its mouth caused it to vanish. It had been one of the best things the doll ever felt. Better than any hug. It had to have more.

Morning came and went. This day felt different to the doll. The whine was still there when humans passed nearby, but it only warned. It could move while they weren't looking right at it.

It wanted more. More hunger had come and it knew the taste of flesh now.

Some time later, the door banged open and a human was shoved inside. Another followed. A smaller human with dark hair righted himself and straightened his clothes as a taller, red haired woman followed him inside. She made the doll wary, for some reason.

The woman closed the door, turning to give a flat stare at the man. She was tall, beautiful by human standards, with slim arms bare and dressed in black armor. A sword was carried by her side and flatbow on her back. The male, on the other hand, carried no weapons and was much more finely dressed. He had blue eyes, like the woman, and a small beard on his face.

"Ah doubted it, brother. Ah really did."

The woman's tone was as flat as her stare, laced with a distinct accent. She spoke a touch slower than the rest of the humans it had heard. Still, her voice was powerful, and betrayed no emotion.

"Ah had clues to it. But ah believed in yeh. Now ah know ah was wrong. Yer guilty."

The man puffed himself up, glaring at his sister.

"Guilty of what, sister? Killing a dog? You're out of you mind."

"Yeh know what ah mean, brother. One year ago. Ah always suspected you, and now ah know it's true. Yeh killed that boy, Kolin."

"Who? The boy that got drunk and fell off the roof? I had nothing to do with it."

"Don't lie tah me, brother. Ah know what happened."

"Oh, do enlighten me, dear sister." The man sneered.

"Yeh were supposed tah be at father's nameday feast with tah other people. Ah wasn't there, on account of bein the bastard daughter, but ah heard. Yeh and Branton Cracklehart were absent at tah same time."

The man blanched, just in the slightest, but the woman continued.

"Ah was in teh kitchens, havin supper. Kolin was with me. He was a good lad. Brave and loyal. Ah sent him to mah room to fetch mah bow, show him some tricks in tah yard. Ah fancied him, I did. He walked in on yeh and Branton fuckin. Yeh used mah room, thought no-one would care. He saw yeh. Yeh panicked. Thought he'd tell. Yeh'd both be ruined if word got out. So yeh grabbed him, dragged him up tah stairs. He must have fought, didn't 'e? Yeh tossed him off the roof after pourin wine on his shirt. Stableboy sneakin some of tah Lord's drink. No-one askin more questions."

"And that's exactly what happened. He got drunk, fell off the roof."

"That's a lie, an we both know it. Ah knew that boy. Never touched a drink in his life. His father was a drunk. A right mean one. Scared the boy so bad he swore he'd never drink. He hated heights, told me so himself."

"I told you, I didn't do it, sister." The man proclaimed, spreading his arms in exasperation.

Ignoring him, the woman turned away, facing the window.

"Remind me again, Toran, what would be the name of the forest just outside Stoneguard. Teh one where our border ends, with teh black mist and trees that feel like boiled rubber?"

"I don't see how that's at all relevant, dear sister."

"Answer teh question."

"The Deadwood."

"And remind me, what kind of creatures live in teh Deadwood?"

"It's been a long time since I had the pleasure of listening to children's tales. I'd have to go get a nursemaid to remind me."

She hit him. Right in the mouth.

"Which. Creatures?" Her voice was ice now, fury pouring through her words. "Yeh are a soft fool from Teh Heartlands, but yeah were raised in Stoneguard. Stoneguards don forget."

The man clutched his bleeding mouth, and spat out his response.

"Wraiths and wights. Children's tales."

She hit him again.

"Children's tales. That keel more people every year than yer petty wars. Remind meh why criminals are executed outside teh city? Why every street is alight at all hours. Why no cloaked man or woman is allowed in our walls?"

It was bleeding even harder now. The male was clutching his mouth with both hands, doubled over. He still forced out an answer to her question.

"Hate and fear lets the wraiths in. Wights love the shadows and hate the light."

"You keeled a man in these walls. What did yeh think he felt in his last moments? If yeh weren't mah brother, I'd have yeh hanged. Because yer mah blood, I'll let you leave tomorrow. Set foot in Stoneguard lands again, and I'll have yeh flayed alive. Don think I won't do it. I'm a sworn Bloodguard of the castle. Duty comes before family."

"Why? Why now? What makes you think I killed that boy?"

"Old Makill was found dead this mornin."

"So, it's dog. They die all the time."

"He was stabbed and eaten, teh flesh carved right outta him. Yeh know why? Dogs hate wights and wraiths. Why do yeh think we have so many? They can smell em. Wights and wraiths hate dogs more then anythin. Today is the winter solstice. When the day is shortest. Today, they have power. Make no mistake, brother. There's a wraith loose in Stoneguard. It's been sleeping all year, weakened by our salted grounds and by the rules of undeath. But today, it's free."

They left after that, shutting the door behind him. Something the woman had said stirred in the doll. It's hunger grew. It could move, even though it wasn't night. Tonight, it would do more. Eat more. There were no more dogs in the fortress. Something bigger would have to do. After eating, it felt..smarter. Better. Stronger. It had to eat more.

The girl didn't come to her room that night. There were loud sounds coming from the inside of the fortress. Humans having a feast, to celebrate their Lord's nameday. The whine was faint in it's mind, but it could move. So it did. Out through the dog door. The tower they were in had five floors. The girl lived on the third one. But where it wanted to go was one more up. The red haired woman's room. The knife, it had hidden nearby. Easy for it to find.

It went up, making slow progress on the sharp stairs, and hid in an alcove across from her door. It didn't wait long. Soon, they came. The man from before, with another man. This one had orange hair and a wild beard. Taller than the dark haired man, and very strong. They stopped near the woman's door and spoke softly. The dark haired man shook his head and pointed up. Once they left, the doll followed.

It found them on the roof, wrestling in the snow. Ripping each other's clothes off. The whine was sharp in it's head now, but it did not stop. It tottered along on it's misformed legs, ambling through the open door. It walked in the snow, but left no trace.

They had slowed down a little, moving slowly now, as the wove their bodies around each other.

It remembered, sharp pains going through it's mind. Strong hands seizing and pulling. Biting a hand. The sight of the dark sky as it tumbled. Hitting.

It stood, lopsided, a blade with dried blood held in it's paws, one button eye barely attached and drooping. An ear ripped off and another hanging limply. Stuffing missing. A small, pathetic bunny doll.

It raised the knife and tottered forward.

Branton died when the knife went through his throat, collapsing atop his lover. For his part, Toran stared in shock as Branton's blood squirted onto his face. He tried to struggle, but his lover was too heavy to move. He lay there, eyes open in horror, as the doll came slowly ambling around Branton's body, dripping knife in hand.

He remembered how to scream as it plunged the knife into his side. Again. And Again. Slowly.

The hunger went away with every stab. It did it again and again. Until the snow was red with blood. The whine in it's head was screaming, but it didn't care.

It turned as the door to the roof banged open behind him. The woman from before stood, sword bared at it. Her eyes took in the two corpses, then it. She said nothing just strode across the rooftop, pain in her eyes.

It stood there, staring up at her with one drooping eye as she approached. She lifted her sword and spoke to it.

"Ah was too late. Ah knew this would happen. They snuck out again. Yeh we're waitin. Ah know it's you, Kolin. Hoped yeh might have just moved on to the next world, not become a wraith."

It didn't reply. It couldn't.

"I liked yeh. Want yeh to know that. But yeh've had yet revenge, wriath. Now I'll have mine."

Before it could move, she had lunged across the snow and stabbed it through the middle. It thrashed on the sword, but to no avail. The knife was knocked from it's paws and sent into the snow.

She held it up, into the night sky. Just for a second, it thought that the view from the edge of this tower looked beautiful. The city below was ablaze with light, and the moon shone down, clear as day.

Then, she flicked her wrist and the salt within the blade caught fire. It burned, hanging there on her sword. Not just it's body, but it itself. It didn't fight it.

The hunger was gone. It was leaving this world behind.

When the last ashes of the doll fell from Ellara's sword, a sigh could be heard from the air before her. She closed her eyes, and saw Kolin's ghost leaving this world.

It was done. And here she stood, on the snowy top of a tower, sword in hand, the dead bodies of her brother and his lover before her. Best get to cleaning up.

Being Your Own Creative Boss with Desi Moore

Becoming an established professional in any line of work can be a long road traveled, but what if you want to really niche down? We reached out to talk to Desi Moore, aka Dude It’s Desi, about how she not only got her foot in the door of creating in the entertainment industry, but also what’s kept her there. Squarespace is the website building platform that has helped Desi out by getting her portfolio site organized in a way that represents her brand and welcomes new business with vigor, letting her quirky and fun personality and style shine through!

Back in 2003, Desi found herself in a place lots of us have been – young, undecided on a future career, and having a good time living a fun, carefree lifestyle. She had just relocated back to Los Angeles from Brooklyn and had the realization that a plan was necessary for the next steps she was hoping to take as an artist.

“I just thought artwise, without a college degree, who would hire me and for what? But I swore when I moved back to Los Angeles that I would not work another day in a restaurant, and that I had to get something legit in the entertainment biz on my resume to get some sort of foot in the door. The movie advertising agency Trailer Park hired me to be their receptionist, and I did that for about a year.”

Just before Desi planned on submitting her two weeks notice to take a position as a film director’s personal assistant, Trailer Park opened a print department specific to movie posters.

“Of course I thought that was super cool, but again why would they hire me when I had no experience. However, when the print department found out I was leaving they offered me a job. Apparently my goofy illustrated company newsletters, cut out 3D lunch menus, and all the weird arty shit I made and surrounded myself with in my reception desk area caught their eye and they saw potential in me – which to this day I am still very grateful for. So, I turned down the personal assistant job and immersed myself and became completely obsessed with learning and succeeding in being an Art Director. I worked really long hard hours and will never forget how stoked I was when I saw my first official movie poster printed.”

There’s usually that moment that stands out, the one that makes you decide to commit to what you’re doing and have a go at it with everything you’ve got in you. For Desi, it was a specific movie poster that ended up being more of a lesson than a success.

“I made a poster for Mad Max Fury Road that was super time consuming because I constructed a giant mass of people, car parts, motorcycles, smoke, destruction, skulls, etc. Each piece had to be painstakingly and intricately masked out (that is where you cut something out of its environment). So halfway through I was like ‘Oh my god this sucks, my hands and eyes are killing me, what was I thinking?!’ But I kept on going and finally finished it. The client and I both thought it turned out really cool, but in the end it didn’t end up getting used for anything, but hey that’s showbiz for ya!”

Being a creative individual in a business world can sometimes be a struggle, and you’ll often find yourself at a crossroads trying to balance both sides of a company.

Desi says, “I do find it a struggle. The business side of things: discussing money, paying bills, finding the time and energy for paperwork, etc. has always been a struggle for me. Being such a right brained individual it’s not a natural forte for me. But I absolutely love being my own boss. In my art career it offers me the freedom to work on such a variety of projects: huge movies, indie movies, album covers, gig posters, clothing brands, paintings and illustrations, whatever! So I never get bored or feel pigeonholed as an artist.”

She also owns a gallery – Showboat – in Los Angeles, an entirely different creative outlet. “As far as owning the gallery, my favorite thing is it’s like I have a big ‘ol rubber approval stamp for any idea I may have. The show concepts and artists are all decided by me. Once I even painted the whole space purple, rented a clawfoot bathtub, and exactly replicated the When Dove’s Cry video set to a tee – purple roses, smoke machine, faux doves, stained glass windows, and my friend dressed as Dr. Fink. Dan Monick beautifully lit and shot portraits of people in the bathtub all night. Carmen Electra even showed up and stole the show! Basically I spent a bunch of cash to create the raddest free Prince photobooth ever. Business-wise nobody else would have ever probably approved that idea but I did, and so it happened.”

This spring, Desi is stretching her creative legs even further and releasing a children’s book – ABCs of the 80s – in collaboration with a former coworker from her Trailer Park days.

“Erin (Campbell Dunkerley) has a young daughter and really wanted to teach her about all the cool eighties things she grew up with along with her ABCs at the same time. Being an 80’s kid myself, I was totally onboard! Erin had some letter ideas and even a few clearances already in place. She was super cool about giving me creative control of the drawings and layout of the book. We were basically on the same page as far as the letters went (although for ‘N’ I did begrudgingly draw The New Kids on The Block instead of the Nancy Reagan / Mr. T D.A.R.E program, but in return I got to do payphone over Pop Swatch so it’s all good – teamwork making the dream work!) I’m not used to working on one single project for so long and I had a hard time focusing at the start of it. So me and my little dog Crackers went up to my friend’s cabin in the mountains in California for a month last year to begin it. So very cliché I know, but it was awesome and I now get why people seclude themselves when working on a book. When it comes to choosing a favorite project Desi has worked on, I’m willing to bet you’re already familiar…

“I really love when someone says ‘just do your thing’ and I can execute my vision on a project. Being micromanaged or being used as a tool to create something I don’t believe in is never fun. As far as my favorite project to date, I would say it was working on the poster for the movie Bridesmaids. I got to see it through from start to finish, beginning with creating the concept, to art directing the photoshoot with Mark Seliger, and on to constructing the final poster. The cast were all so sweet and hilarious. We shot several setups that day and one included going to a park with Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and the rest of the girls to pose with a whole bunch of puppies, bunnies, and swans in bowties and berets. The bunnies wouldn’t stop humping and right then I knew it was career highlight for sure. In the end, we went with the original idea of making the girls look like badasses posing against a brick wall, juxtaposing the whole typical demure bridesmaids in a cupcake dress thing. The original copy line I came up with that almost made it was just simply ‘What?’. Shoutout to Damon Wolf and Maria Pekurovskaya from Universal for being a dreamteam and letting me do my thing and have fun with it!”

When it comes to searching out inspiration for her work Desi says, “I really love to travel and have my eyes opened to new customs, colors, and patterns. I travel often and try and be as porous as possible and stow it all away in my brain to subconsciously draw inspiration from when I’m just back in LA working in my studio. I like when the inspirations all get mixed up together and create a whole new vibe of their own.”

Further inspiration comes from a source that’s right at our fingertips, literally.

“On a daily basis, I would be lying if I didn’t say Instagram. There are so many amazing accounts that lead you down rabbit holes of incredible art that I would never be exposed to otherwise. I also have made friends with some wonderful and inspiring artists via Instagram and we share what we find and dig, weaving the web further. I would also be lying if I didn’t say I go into very deep Instagram meme holes on a daily basis – but hey, no shame in that game – humor is the icing on the cake of life!”
