Yesterday I posted more Noldor Hair Headcanons (Part 1 | Part 2 | On AO3 and @alqualonde-s wrote in the tags that she'd like some visuals. As it happens, I have very clear mental images of each hairstyle in the fic, so I did some sketches!
Tumblr media
(individual sketches under the cut, terrible ID in alt)
Here we have:
a very sad injured Finrod with his mourning braids
Galadriel wearing the crown braids they devised on the Helcaraxë to protect their ears
Maglor and his far-too-complex mourning braids
Lalwen wearing armour and battle braids
Turgon wearing a formal style, black/kinky hair edition.
I didn't have designs yet for Lalwen and Turgon but I'm happy with these!
I'm not always consistent with my hairstyle headcanons in my art, but as a bonus, some hairstyles I've drawn before:
Finarfin in semi-formal Tirion style
Maedhros in battle styles here and here
Maglor in a slightly silly Fëanorian style
Finrod in fully formal Tirion style
Finrod in semi formal Tirion (or formal Nargothrond style)
Celebrimbor in a mixed late-Fëanorian and dwarven style
Fingolfin and Fingon in semi-formal Tirion styles (with Anairë in a simpler style)
Celegorm with his hunting braids
Elrond in a late-Fëanorian style
Fingon in two formal Tirion styles (but in trad pencil)
Bonus: "Elwing's hair floats around her as she falls."

I'd like to think that when Galadriel got coup'd and removed from power in Eregion, she threw down her crown (or equivalent) and looked right at Celebrimbor as she did.

It's always interesting (to me) to go back to Tolkien's descriptions of hairstyles among some of the women of LOTR.
Here is the description of Galadriel's gift to Gimli:
Then the Lady unbraided one of her long tresses, and cut off three golden hairs, and laid them in Gimli's hand.
Here is the canonical description of Arwen's hair:
The braids of her dark hair were touched by no frost ... Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white; but her soft grey raiment had no ornament save a girdle of leaves wrought in silver.
Here is the explanation of Gilraen's name:
The meaning of Gilraen as a woman's name is not in doubt. It meant 'one adorned with a tressure set with small gems in its network,' such as the tressure of Arwen ... The women of the Eldar were accustomed to wear such tressures ... Names such as Gilraen, and others of similar meaning, would thus be likely to become first names given to maid-children of the kindred of the "Lords of the Dúnedain". The element raen was the Sindarin form of Q. raina 'netted, enlaced'.
Personally, I think it's interesting that it's Éowyn, a shieldmaiden from a distinctly different culture, who has the loose long hair that fandom often goes for. But I also think the canon aesthetic for Elvish women and those akin to them is really intriguing and could be quite beautiful, but contemporary fandom preferences have definitely obscured Tolkien's affection for braids and pretty hairnets.

i love john silver's curly girl routine
he's scrunching and moussing and perhaps is even in the possession of a denman brush
where did he get it out at sea in the beginning of the 18th century? don't think about it let the waves speak to you

Okay but i'm still thinking about Gimli talking about the glittering caves of Aglarond, and i just realized that gives him a really intriguing connection to Galadriel that he would be so proud to know about.
None of Durin's race would mine those caves for stones or ore, not if diamonds and gold could be got there. Do you cut down groves of blossoming trees in the springtime for firewood? We would tend these glades of flowering stone, not quarry them. With cautious skill, tap by tap – a small chip of rock and no more, perhaps, in a whole anxious day – so we could work, and as the years went by, we should open up new ways, and display far chambers that are still dark, glimpsed only as a void beyond fissures in the rock. And lights, Legolas! We should make lights, such lamps as once shone in Khazad-dûm; and when we wished we would drive away the night that has lain there since the hills were made; and when we desired rest, we would let the night return.'
Gimli here is talking about not only the beauty of the place, but about his desire to preserve it. He doesn't wish to change it, to remove the ancient things therein, he only wishes to bring more of it to light into the waking world.
Does that sound familiar?
In Rivendell there was memory of ancient things; in Lórien the ancient things still lived on in the waking world
Lorien is, through the power of Galadriel, a place where ancient things still lived on in the waking world. And when the Ring is destroyed, her power of preservation is lost and she departs.
But that's okay, because Gimli also has a desire to preserve the ancient beauties of the world, and he does it in a way that is not dependent on the continuation of something as fallible as magic.
Gimli is continuing Galadriel's desire to preserve ancient beauties, and it's something so near and dear to his heart he doesn't even realize that they are working to accomplish the same task.

Hunting of the Dragon
What if the Arkenstone really was a Silmaril? (very late, but inspired by arofili's @funwithfanon prompts from last march!)
click for quality | closeups & details under the cut
Galadriel, Celeborn, and Thranduil are the only people on the right side of the mountains that a) have fought a dragon (mostly in the war of wrath) b) remember the Hunting of the Wolf and c) are mentally stable enough to be trusted around a silmaril (more or less)
so of course they end up having to fight silmaril-raged smaug. (he sat on it and now it's stuck to his bald spot)
since the sindar don't have metal armor galadriel is the only tank, and therefore the person on dragon-stabbing duty.
celeborn is the spearman in charge of keeping smaug from escaping or mauling someone else (and also making sure the silmaril doesn't fall on galadriels head, because at that point it definitely would still burn her)
thranduil is supposed to be doing air control to keep smaug from flying up and torching everyone, but he decided it would be a great idea to jump-dive at the dragon's head.
