lord of the rings ladies week day seven | hope | gilraen | @lotrladiessource
“This is our last parting, Estel, my son. I am aged by care, even as one of lesser Men; and now that it draws near I cannot face the darkness of our time that gathers upon Middle-earth. I shall leave it soon.” Aragorn tried to comfort her, saying: “Yet there may be a light beyond the darkness; and if so, I would have you see it and be glad.” But she answered only with this linnod: “Ónen i-Estel Edain, ú-chebin estel anim: I gave Hope to the Dúnedain, I have kept no hope for myself,” and Aragorn went away heavy of heart.

It's always interesting (to me) to go back to Tolkien's descriptions of hairstyles among some of the women of LOTR.
Here is the description of Galadriel's gift to Gimli:
Then the Lady unbraided one of her long tresses, and cut off three golden hairs, and laid them in Gimli's hand.
Here is the canonical description of Arwen's hair:
The braids of her dark hair were touched by no frost ... Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white; but her soft grey raiment had no ornament save a girdle of leaves wrought in silver.
Here is the explanation of Gilraen's name:
The meaning of Gilraen as a woman's name is not in doubt. It meant 'one adorned with a tressure set with small gems in its network,' such as the tressure of Arwen ... The women of the Eldar were accustomed to wear such tressures ... Names such as Gilraen, and others of similar meaning, would thus be likely to become first names given to maid-children of the kindred of the "Lords of the Dúnedain". The element raen was the Sindarin form of Q. raina 'netted, enlaced'.
Personally, I think it's interesting that it's Éowyn, a shieldmaiden from a distinctly different culture, who has the loose long hair that fandom often goes for. But I also think the canon aesthetic for Elvish women and those akin to them is really intriguing and could be quite beautiful, but contemporary fandom preferences have definitely obscured Tolkien's affection for braids and pretty hairnets.

After a few years Gilraen took leave of Elrond and returned to her own people in Eriador, and lived alone; and she seldom saw her son again, for he spent many years in far countries. But on a time, when Aragorn had returned to the North, he came to her, and she said to him before he went: ‘This is our last parting, Estel, my son. I am aged by care, even as one of lesser Men; and now that it draws near I cannot face the darkness of our time that gathers upon Middle-earth. I shall leave it soon.’ Aragorn tried to comfort her, saying: ‘Yet there may be a light beyond the darkness; and if so, I would have you see it and be glad.’ But she answered only with this linnod: O´ nen i-Estel Edain, u´-chebin estel anim

celebrían and gilraen, mothers of arwen and aragorn respectively. they hold in their hands objects of hope: the evenstar and the ring of barahir, which they handed down to their children. little did they know how great an impact arwen and aragorn would have on the future of middle-earth, whose love will reunite the kingdoms of the dúnedain under their rule. unfortunately, neither were present to witness this beautiful eucatastrophe...

There was this post* that mentioned Gilraen's "I gave Hope to the Dunedain; I kept no Hope for myself" and Elwing & Eärendil, and in the end was like "Tolkien and parents", and then I just had to remember how he literally considered his own mother something of a martyr (long story short, she converted to Catholicism with her sons and their very Protestant family just... disowned her. and Tolkien seemed to be sure that she would have lived longer if she had had their support, with the better healthcare it could have provided et all), and now I'm a little tearful.

I just realized how extremely stupid the line in the films with Thranduil telling Legolas to seek out Strider is. Like its always bugged me because it felt so far off from where Legolas is at in the books when we get to LotR and even in the films. But it's so much worse...
Like you wanna know where Legolas is gonna find Aragorn?
With Elrond
And his mom
In Rivendell
Because he's TEN FUCKING YEARS OLD!!
HE doesn't even know his true name yet or really even that he's a Dunedain. He's literally never known a life outside of Rivendell. He's probably drawing on the walls with crayons and harassing Elladan and Elrohir to take him with them everywhere. What's Thranduil sending Legolas there for? Babysitting duty?!
Or does he just think his son is so legitimately stupid with the directional sense of a dwarf above ground that it's gonna take Legolas literally ten years to find Aragorn? Like the first place he would go to ask about this guy wouldn't be fucking Rivendell! Because everyone knows Elrond knows everything and we canonically know that Legolas has never been to Lorien or the sea prior to the trilogy so we know he's not hanging with Galadriel or Cirdan.
They took the chill wood elf who was doing the wood elf version of playing his gameboy with his feet up on the wall as he laid in bed for most of his life and leaving his room to do "chores" for his dad and tried to give him a completely implausible backstory. They really did Legolas so dirty in the Hobbit films.
I also do not approve of how they made him up. It's like they tried to make him look younger than he had been in the trilogy and succeeded only in making him look weird.

MGiME but OC has transmigrated/isekai'd into a heartbroken Gilraen after Arathorn's death.
OC to herself probably: No, you cannot moon over your own child! That's so gross. Legolas though... Yeah no, he's your kid's bff, get yourself together woman!
But what can OC do? She's 23 feeling 17, a widow of a man she doesn't know, and the mother of a 2-yr old Aragorn! If she cannot be a 10th walker, then she's gonna make full use of her high status and meet all her favourite characters!
So when Elrond welcomes the mother and child into Rivendell for protection, he expects a woman barely functioning through her grief: so deep was the love between Arathorn and Gilraen.
But what Elrond gets instead is a woman who flirts with him!!?? And Glorfindel?! And Erestor too??!!
(Though curiously, when Elrohir tries to trifle with her, emboldened by her rather over-friendliness with every elf of importance in the vicinity, he is treated to her motherly fussing instead, much to Elladan's amusement.)
When the company of Thorin Oakenshield passes through, you can bet your ponies that OC!Gilraen is hanging out with the dwarves instead of hiding away, fawning over His majestic Mr. Majesty, Thorin, and trying to join his quest.
(She doesn't. Little Estel puts a stop to that madness by pouting and wobbling his lips until tears glisten in his silver-grey eyes and OC!Gilraen has always been a simp for Aragorn, be he 10 or 88. She still slips a love note to Thorin before he leaves, warning him about his impending doom, which promptly gets lost in the goblin caves, washed out as it was in the rains, changing nothing.)
Just... Aragorn growing up with a mother who is full of life and love for him. A mother who would look at him and see her favourite person in all of Arda, instead of a ghost of someone she held dearer than life.
(And when he is named Elessar and crowned king, OC!Gilraen is there, 102 but looking barely a decade older than him — more a sister in the people's eyes than his mother. And OC may be a centenarian, but holy hell, that silver fox over there, is that the Prince of Dol Amroth!!??)

The Power of Tea
Prompt: 'any, any, tea makes everything better' for @three-sentence-ficathon
Summary: While waiting for Aragorn and the hobbits to reach Rivendell, Bilbo attempts to ease Gilraen's anxiety by offering her tea.
Character(s): Gilraen & Bilbo Baggins
Rating: G
Word count: 1.8k (I tried to keep it short, I swear)
Tumblr media
Excerpt:
Gilraen glanced at Elrond, wondering if Lobelia was some public figure whom she was meant to know, but he continued to gaze fixedly out of the window. He must be just as worried as she; Estel was his as much as he was Gilraen’s, after all. If only I could worry like an elf, all stoic and still. She was about to resume pacing when suddenly she discovered a cup, painted with daisies, being proffered in her direction by a pair of small, wrinkled hands. “Tea, my lady?” said Bilbo, even as he pushed the cup into her hands. “I don’t -” Gilraen began, just grabbing the cup before it slipped from her fingers. “Marvellous concoction, tea,” said Bilbo, already pouring another cup. “Perfect for anything really. A little pick-me-up during a long afternoon. Something to warm your fingers when it’s frosty outside. And of course if nerves need a little soothing …” He glanced meaningfully at Gilraen, whose legs were already itching to begin a circuit of the room again.
