A crack ship has seized me. It makes no sense yet it compels me totally. It pains me I will never see this anywhere but in my dreams. The potential for hilarity is great, it doesn't work but in my hear it does.
Theoden and Ioreth.
Post Pelennor, Theoden survives and ends up in the Houses of Healing, along with Eowyn. There he meets a bold, chatty, brave and loyal healer called Ioreth. Humbly born, a working woman, without lineage or grace, totally unlike his first wife, but as loving and loyal as they come, with courage enough to withstand a siege so she can do her duty.
It's not romantic at first. No. While everyone else is off fighting at the Black Gate, the Houses of Healing are the setting for a romantic Shakespearean comedy. Ioreth, out of love for Faramir, and Theoden, out of love for his niece, conspire to bring the two together; with the help of the hobbit Merry, who takes on the clever jester role, and with Theoden and Ioreth falling for each other along the way.
When the war ends and the Rohirrim army returns, they do so to find themselves with a new queen, one nobody expected.
Queen Ioreth guys. It should be a thing.

Why, cousin, one of them went with only his esquire into the Black Country and fought with the Dark Lord all by himself, and set fire to his Tower, if you can believe it. At least that is the tale in the City.
I know there were many important things happening in yesterday's entry, most of all Aragorn's coronation, but this one sentence hidden within Ioreth's story is the fragment that stands out to me the most.
This is not what happened. The tale that gets to Minas Tirith barely a month after these events took place is already more legend-like, more idealised, more artificial, because that's what people do, they idealise, and that's what people of Gondor need right now - heroic tales untouched by the deep sadness and dread they themselves have felt for months, for years even - but it doesn't make it true.
Frodo and Sam weren't the only ones there. Frodo did not fight Sauron once he got to the Crack of Doom - the Ring broke him, and he put it on. They weren't even near Barad-dur. It was a long, ugly, tedious, utterly traumatising journey, and Frodo and Sam longed for their friends' company day and night, they were lonely, exhausted, starving, and Frodo came back too changed to ever heal.
It's not the story people of Minas Tirith would find comforting to hear right now, when the fear looming over their city was finally lifted and they are allowed to feel this immense collective relief and joy. It's not an easy story to keep telling when you can finally be happy. But that happiness cost something, and it was not a pretty tale.

'Nay, cousin! they are not boys,' said Ioreth to her kinswoman from Imloth Melui, who stood beside her. 'Those are Periain, out of the far country of the Halflings, where they are princes of great fame, it is said. I should know, for I had one to tend in the Houses. They are small, but they are valiant. Why, cousin, one of them went with only his esquire into the Black Country and fought with the Dark Lord all by himself, and set fire to his Tower, if you can believe it. At least that is the tale in the City. That will be the one that walks with our Elfstone. They are dear friends, I hear. Now he is a marvel, the Lord Elfstone: not too soft in his speech, mind you, but he has a golden heart, as the saying is; and he has the healing hands. "The hands of the king are the hands of a healer", I said; and that was how it was all discovered. And Mithrandir, he said to me: "Ioreth, men will long remember your words", and—'
Ioreth's commentary is essential, because it sounds so real. Every one of us knows an Ioreth (some of us may even be an Ioreth). I love her so much.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 3
Beregond vs Ioreth
Beregond:
A Man of Gondor and one of the Guards of the Citadel, who abandoned his post to save Faramir’s life.
loyal, friendly, good dad
Ioreth:
A talkative old woman who worked in the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring.
Reigning queen of autistic infodumping. Will say whatever random free-association she happens to think of, and everyone else has to treat it as important *because it is*.

Read Dandelions last night and i was wondering, is this going to be linked to the Boromir/OC fic you're working on? And if so does that mean Ioreth is going to show up? Because the idea of getting to hear her take on this is hilarious to me XD
I am so happy that Dandelions resonated so well with you! I wrote that one on a whim, just to give readers a nice imagine of what it's like to receive not just flowers, but flowers from someone like Boromir! Only THIS GUY can arrive with a handful of weeds and still make you swoon.
Tumblr media
As for the fic's mention of Ioreth (Reader is Ioreth's apprentice), unfortunately Dandelions is one of my fics that is an absolute stand-alone one-shot reader insert, so there would be no exploration of Ioreth that way.
My planned Boromir long fic is going to spin off from my other one-shot, "Breathe", and the Reader love interest in that one is a humble market vendor (among other things). I look forward to sharing more about her as she develops into an OC very soon!
I'm also a fan of Ioreth's character (she reminds me of some of my favorite high school teachers, haha!), so I surely can find some excuse for her to participate/meddle in Boromir's love life!

More Reading Thoughts: The Steward and the King
New chapter, let’s go!
Dude Eowyn chill out lol
Eowyn: “I’m bummed because I tried to commit sudoku and it didn’t work.” Faramir: “Please don’t do that. You’re too pretty to die. But hey, if it makes you feel any better, we all might die anyway, so you might as well rest up if you wanna be able to fight.” Eowyn: “But they want me to stay in bed. And my window doesn’t look eastward :’-C” Faramir: “Oh! I can fix that! :-D”
AND NOW MERRY AND FARAMIR GET TO CHAT!! DUDE!!
First Bergil, and now Faramir!! This just in: All of Pippin’s friends eventually become Merry’s friends. When am I gonna get my scene with Beregond and Merry, huh??
(I probably won’t but a girl can dream)
Tbh I think the Warden ships Farawyn
Faramir: “I’mma give you my dead mom’s cloak ‘cause it’s beautiful and sad like you”
Faramir: “Man, it’s been great hanging out with you. I really hope the world doesn’t end now, ‘cause I don’t want to lose this.” Eowyn, a genius: “This what?”
This whole scene plays out like a cheesy Bollywood movie. It’s so over-the-top. I love it X’-D
And then everybody MAGICALLY STARTS SINGING AT ONCE
“And his duty was to prepare for one who would replace him” 👀 John the Baptist is that you??
And here we see the healing power of love *throws confetti*
YOOOOOOO WE GET MORE GONDORIAN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS WAIT
Okay so we have trumpets, bells, harps, viols, flutes, and horns listed so far. I’m gonna want to answer that ask more thoroughly at some point won’t I?? ‘Cause I have didn’t have this information before but NOW I DO
Heyyy there’s somebody named Hurin! Hopefully his life has been better than the original one
(I can’t imagine naming your kid after someone who’s best known for having a son with the Worst Life Ever. Like, okay, sassing Morgoth to his face is pretty cool, but is it worth it?? Is it really?? Like the only thing worse would actually be naming your kid Turin. … They’ve done that too, haven’t they?)
ELFHELM!!!
ELFHELM SURVIVED!!
ELFHELM OF DAD JOKES I LOVE YOU
Hahaha hi Ioreth
“They are dear friends, I hear.” HECK YES THEY ARE
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW RIGHT YOU ARE IORETH
Listen one of my favorite tropes is when people in-universe acknowledge the bromance as An Official ThingTM, so this is PEAK. THANK YOU TOLKIEN
Faramir: “I give you my stick.” Aragorn: “No u”
Goodness GRACIOUS that is a whole paragraph of titles for Aragorn. What the heck. Who is it in my notes that always tags Aragorn as “local man has too many names, local authorities report” because you are RIGHT
“Now according to tradition, he should take the crown from his father, but given that his father didn’t have the crown and is also very much dead—”
Faramir: “I give you the crown” Aragorn: “NO U”
And now Frodo does the task of a ring-bearer in an actual wedding, which is to carry the shiny thing to somebody so they can give it to somebody else
“HEY! LET’S HEAR IT FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!”
Woohoo King Aragorn!
WAIT
HOLD UP
‘ITS GATES WERE WROUGHT OF MITHRIL AND STEEL’??
YOOOOOO!! That’s a 100% METAL DOOR!! In a MEDIEVAL SETTING!! Even WE don’t have huge metal doors for most things, and we’re in the modern age!
First of all, imagine how shiny! Secondly, IMAGINE HOW FREAKIN’ SCI-FI—
BEREGOOOOOOOOND
HELLO MY BOO I’VE MISSED YOU
“And the king said to Beregond: ‘Beregond…’”
Pffft
I must be slaphappy, ‘cause for some reason I find his name being written twice in a row to be very funny
Aragorn: “Okay so you’re not in trouble, but you’re also not allowed to be a Guard of the Citadel anymore.” Beregond: “😨☹️😭” Aragorn: “…Because you’re gonna work FOR FARAMIR! GET PROMOTED ON, IDIOT!!” Beregond: “😧 … 🤩🥳🎉🎊🎈”
Aww haha Aragorn and Eomer hug X-D
Eowyn, to Faramir: “I’ll be back later, I promise.” Eomer, probably: “👀😨😡”
Aragorn: “Pls stick around, friends, I love you guys”
Frodo: “Pippin, you were wrong, Gandalf is keeping secrets again.” Gandalf: “excuse”
Aragorn, excitedly: “LE GASP!! A TREE!!”
Okay so lemme get this straight: Aragorn wasn’t allowed to marry Arwen until he found a tree??
Right. Okay. 🤣🤣🤣
I’m sure this is very symbolically important and whatever but it’s almost 3 AM and I just think it’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all night
GLORFINDELLLLLL
GLORFINDEL HI!!
I’VE MISSED YOU FRIEND!!! 8-D
I guess all these other elves are here too but I don’t really care ROFLOL
This chapter really is the epitome of Tolkien going “oh shoot I guess I’d better include some romance in here huh”

Canon characters in my fic who need faceclaims:
(might be in need of a few updates, depending on how many canon book only! characters I actually end up including)
Ioreth
In my fic, she's Elenna's nursemaid and the self-proclaimed head of her household. She was lady-in-waiting to her grandmother, the Lady Finduilas of Dol Amroth and supervised her children's education.
Born: TA 2960 (is she really this young? Ioreth literally means 'old woman')
Died: FoA 39
Fancast: Harriet Walter
Tumblr media
Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth
Prince of Dol Amroth, Elenna and Elboron's great-uncle. He loves Faramir's children deeply and they love him back (Elenna constantly asks him for stories and anecdotes about her grandmother)
Born: TA 2955
Died: FoA 34
Fancast: Jeremy Irons
(in his youth: Eric Bana)
Tumblr media
Princess Finduilas of Dol Amroth
Imrahil's older sister. Elenna is said to be her spitting image, but she doesn't really believe it nor does she see the resemblance. She was Boromir and Faramir's mother and was married to Denethor, Ruling Steward of Gondor during the War of the Ring (though she was long dead by then)
Born: TA 2950
Died: TA 2988 (aged 38)
Fancast: Beren Saat
Tumblr media
Elboron Faramirion
Elenna's younger brother and heir to the House of Stewards. She calls him sunshine. He's ten years her junior.
Born: FoA 11
Died: unknown
Fancast: Eoin Murtagh (toddler)
Toby Regbo (adult)
Tumblr media
Eldarion Telcontar
Firstborn son of King Elessar and Queen Arwen Undómiel, he's the Crown Prince of Gondor and Arnor. Engaged to Elenna, he eventually marries Ilmarë, the Handmaiden of Varda.
Born: FoA 1
Died: FoA 220
Fancast: Henry Cavill
