We all like to think about Eddie not knowing he’s gay in clueless terms or talk about him like he’s definitely already knows, but he really, really doesn’t.

He met a girl, who he became close enough friends with that he thought the feelings were romantic, (she probably initiated everything), when he was 13/14 years old, and then presumably didn’t like a single girl after for all of high school until he reconnected with that one girl.

So in Eddie’s young mind, he probably thought ‘wow this girl is the only person I’ve ever felt a single strong emotion towards, it must mean she’s ‘the one’’. And then they were together, and then they had a child and got married, and then he was in a war zone for most of that marriage, and she got him through it, and then she left him to be a single father, and then just as he thought they were a family again, she asked for a divorce, and then fucking died. (and all of this was back to back without any real time to process one thing before the next)

This man could not have had a more devastating ‘only relationship he’s ever been in’. He eventually attempts to move on with a very nice and pretty woman who has a loving relationship with his child and would make the perfect new mother. Except he can’t feel a damn thing.

But in Eddie’s mind, that must be because he can’t let go of Shannon. Shannon was the person he felt things for.

Everything was exciting in the beginning with Ana and Marisol because he was nervous enough and out of his element enough to mistake ‘nice pretty woman showing me attention and making me anxious’ with ‘crush’. But Eddie loved Shannon. She was his friend first. She was his first everything. She was the mother of his child. There was love there. He just doesn’t understand the difference between ‘love’ and ‘in love’. In Eddie’s brain, these women don’t make him feel anything because Shannon will always be ‘the one’.

Eddie knows that what he has with Buck is something he doesn’t have with anyone else, but this man has been through so much and hasn’t had a moment in his entire adult life to ask himself what he’s feeling long enough to figure out he’s gay and in love with his best friend. He knows he feels something. He just doesn’t know what that is. And how is he supposed to figure it out when they keep almost losing each other and Buck has never been single at a good time for Eddie and Eddie has never really had a good time. (not to mention the catholic guilt he’s probably got drilled into his head)

Let’s all just wish Eddie Diaz a very calm and not world shattering gay realisation, because he has been through more than enough.
