CHAPTER VII! bad idea

the first thing that you noticed was just how soft alhaitham's lips were. all the times that you had caught your gaze lingering on them was barely a preparation for their sensation, almost desperate in their search for a response from you.

and while he had caught you off guard, this was a moment that was bound to happen, whether it was you or him that initiated it. and so, you found your hand coming up, fingers winding into his locks and taking grasp, sitting up a little and kissing the man back with equal intensity.

he whines, arms pulling you in even closer, supporting your weight as you shift your position to a more comfortable and upright one. you open your mouth, tongue sliding against his teeth as you deepen the kiss, revelling in the way he opens himself so easily to you, his arms now sliding to rest on your waist, fingers grasping at the curve of your hips.

it felt good to be kissed like this, like you were air and he was trying to breathe, like alhaitham couldn't live a second without your lips on his. the only thing stopping you from pushing him down and properly straddling him was the lingering memory that this was all happening on a bench in the middle of mondstadt.

and when he finally broke apart from you, eyes flitting open and pupils blown wide, there was a thick silence hanging between the two of you. you didn't know what to say, reluctant to break the silence after what was quite possibly the best kiss of your life.

but before you could even manage to get a word out, alhaitham cut you off.

"this was a bad idea."

and just like that, the moment was over.

you removed your arms from around alhaitham's neck, feeling like you had been scalded, feeling a bitter lump form at the back of your throat as you hesitantly nodded at his words, trying your hardest not to act like some part of you had just been trampled by this.

he wouldn't even look at you, sitting there with his head in his hands, scrubbing over his face with a frustration that you couldn't help but think was directed at you. the air was no longer warm, instead leeching your own body heat away as you wrapped your arms around yourself.

it was silent again now, a lot heavier than before, though the sweet aftertaste of him was more sickening than anything else.

you didn't say anything again, just carefully watching alhaitham as he sat still, watching as he finally raised his head to look at you, expression unreadable.

"let's go back to the room."

"okay." you hated how hoarse you sounded.

this time, alhaitham led the way, seemingly knowing the streets of this unfamiliar city like the back of his hand, leaving you to trail after him, cold and tripping over your feet in an attempt to keep up with his long stride.

you'd feel even more pathetic than you already did if you asked him to slow down, so you just bit the inside of your cheek, hoping that you'll get back to the hostel soon so you can just crawl into bed and forget that any of this ever happened.

the silence was unnerving now, the warmth that you had been feeling mere minutes ago such a foreign concept now. it was a relief when you began to recognise the streets you were walking on, and you forced yourself to drive forwards, mind tunnelling now on just getting back and getting into bed.

and now, only now, in the peak of your desperation outside the hostel door did alhaitham decide to talk.

his hand stopped you, forcing you to a halt as he turned to look at you, eyes meeting yours and words spoken with a deliberate quality.

"let's pretend it never happened, alright?"

and just like that, any hope of some self-perpetuated romance that you had been building up in your head was very quickly shattering. you gave him a stiff nod, dodging past him to get to the stairs that led to your room.

you cursed internally as alhaitham easily kept pace, refusing to let him see your face as you both walked back to the room. you hated that he probably didn't miss the way your hand was shaking as you pulled out the room key, almost missing the hole to unlock the door.

and most of all, you hated how he breezed past you and got into his bed like nothing was wrong, leaving you feeling so empty and alone as you fumbled in the dark towards your own one.

you curled up into your bed, trying your best to sleep, but your mind was still very much awake. no matter how many positions you got into, nothing seemed to change for what felt like hours. naturally, there was no sign of movement from alhaitham's bed. he's probably fast asleep, you thought bitterly.

finally, you gave up, turning on your phone and wincing at the fact that you were on 10% and your charger was buried deep in your luggage that you hadn't unpacked yet.

but still, nothing would stop you from telling your friends about this development.

✦ ⠂⠂୨୧ trivia :: alhaitham did not, in fact, fall asleep for a long time as well. luckily for him, you didn't seem to notice the eyebags he had the next morning
