CONFESSION:
I know people will disagree with this but I actually felt sorry for Alexius. I read the codexes and discovered he and his wife actually loved each other. Alexius's own father wanted Felix dead for not being proficient in magic. Alexius's wife had him killed. And they encouraged Felix's studies at the University of Orlais because he turned out to be a gifted mathematician. Alexius apparently even agreed with Dorian's views on how the Imperium must change.
A darkspawn ambush killed Alexius's wife and infected Felix with the blight sickness. Those tragedies changed Alexius and it showed how grief can destroy a person. I felt bad for Felix because he knew he was dying and faced it with such dignity and peace. All he wanted was to spend his remaining time with his father. I ended up making my own headcanon that Maevaris Tilani ended up caring for Felix during his final days.

It’s been exactly 7 years since the idea of @dorianartbook was born while talking with @elidoo
Tumblr media
It’s still a project I think of fondly, that brought me friends, great experience and raised over $20k USD for LGBTQ charities . Love for Dorian Pavus made it all possible!

Dragon Age Lore Breakdown: Gereon Alexius
Started working on my accursed DA fic again, and the research rabbit hole led me down the In Hushed Whispers path. And I found out a bunch of things about this dude that I realised I never knew before.
Anyway, ramble under the cut.
Tumblr media
Before he became a Magister, Gereon Alexius was first and foremost, a researcher of magic. One that was trying to push the boundaries of what magic could do, particularly in the field of ‘traveling through and controlling both time and physical space’.
His research partner (and eventual wife) was Livia Arida, a researcher who focused specifically on the Veil.
Gereon’s father, Magister Alexius, was your typical Tevinter upper class dude – focused on power and bloodlines and image. House Alexius wished Gereon focused less on the theoretical and more on magic with practical uses.
Gereon's father thus gave up his post as Magister to his nerdy ass son in the hopes that he would become more invested in politics like he himself was.
Instead, Magister Gereon used his position to ‘became a tireless champion of education, criticizing his peers for pouring the Imperium's funds into the war with the Qunari at the expense of the Circle and demanding better schooling and institutions of higher learning for the Soporati.'
His codex entry is more telling of his backstory and character than anything he's displayed in game lmao.
He continued his research in a diminished capacity, and subsequently married his long-time sweetheart and research partner Livia Arida. He also took a position as professor of thaumaturgy at the Minrathous Circle.
[They use the word ‘thamaturgy’ here very liberally, and I’ve not seen this anywhere else in my Dragon Age research. We all know the DND connotations, but I would like to take the meaning of the term as ‘boundary breaking magical research’, since that’s what Gereon is known for. Like idk the Thedosian equivalent of fringe science.]
[[This also assumes a scientific hierarchy within the study of magic within Imperium society, which I doubt they will explore in DA4, but gods that would be so fucking fascinating.]]
Anyway, Gereon and Livia had a son, Felix. Despite both his parents being mages, and particularly gifted ones at that, Felix was a very weak mage, one that could only cast very simple spells and with great effort.
Gereon’s father saw Felix as a weak link, described him as ‘just barely more than a Soporati’. Because of this, he tried to have Felix assassinated. Typical Magister behaviour.
Tumblr media
Livia, being absolutely… livid (yeah I went there lmao), intercepted the assassin, and in turn, fucking had Gereon’s father assassinated instead. This ensured Felix's safety and secured Gereon as head of House Alexius.
Anyway, if it wasn’t clear how much Livia and Gereon loved Felix, you should know by now. Since he couldn't learn much magic, they brought in tutors from all fields – history, art, music, literature, etc, ensuring that anything the boy could study was offered to him on a silver platter.
And although Felix wasn’t a powerful mage, he seemed to have inherited his parents’ analytical minds, and therefore was a gifted mathematician. Recognising this, his parents sent him to study at the University of Orlais.
In the meantime, both Gereon and Livia continued their boundary breaking research. At this point, they decided to take on assistants and apprentices, since they could not involve their son in their research.
While Livia took on ‘half dozen of the most promising young students of the Fade and the Veil throughout the Imperium’, Gereon chose only one apprentice.
You know who it was.
So they continued their research – with Gereon and Dorian focusing on breaking the boundaries of magic itself, while Livia and her apprentices sought to determine the effects of such magic on the Veil. Kind of like an unstoppable force vs immovable object situation.
[There's also what I can only assume is an artist's rendition of their notes in The World of Thedas 2, which is... well.]
Tumblr media
[The description included: Careful study is paid to the eyes of the nug. Based on the drawings and a limited deciphering of the text, the author seems all but obsessed with understanding what animals see and how this might differ from our own perception of reality.]
[[Edit: apparently the images above aren't from Gereon's notes, but from a book called Grim Anatomy. Dissecting this book is a whole nother post so we'll leave it at that.]]
They were apparently super close to a breakthrough. But we can’t have nice things in Thedas, can’t we?
In 9:38 Dragon, Gereon and Livia travelled to Orlais to visit Felix. As the family travelled back to Minrathous (or Hossberg - Dragon Age is never consistent with the lore), they were attacked by hurlocks. For some reason, Gereon wasn’t with his wife and son when this happened.
Livia is killed and Felix is tainted.
Gereon is obviously filled with survivors guilt, the grief of losing his wife, and the fear of now losing his son to the taint. He stopped caring for anything other than his son’s health, and this affected his relationship with his research, and by extension, Dorian.
This led to an argument over how distant and strange Gereon was becoming, and eventually Dorian parted ways with Gereon.
Tumblr media
In the gap between this and the events of Inquisition, Gereon is now part of the Venatori. It can be assumed that the reason he joined was because of promises made that the Elder One can save Felix from death.
[We can probably extrapolate that Gereon somehow understands that Corypheus is a darkspawn, and so that adds to the weight of his belief that Corypheus can cure Felix.]
It is this time and space bending research that is the foundation of In Hushed Whispers.
Once Gereon is defeated, you can judge him in Skyhold. If you decide to take him in as an agent, he can continue his research for the Inquisition. (Though canonically all it yields is this amulet. Which isn't even unique, you can get it in random loot drops anywhere. Sad.)

WIP Wednesday
Thanks for the tags @melisusthewee and @zenstrike! Weee it's the New Year! And I have already written a whole bunch, but specifically I picked up an old Cullen POV Companion Fic I never finished called The Coldest and Warmest Dawn where he and Dorian, Vivienne and Alexius try to find a way to protect the non-mage herald, my OC Rose, from the amount of magic that will flow through her in closing the Breach. So this is part of my next chapter BELOW THE CUT
Cullen can smell it as he crosses the nave. He reaches back for a handful of his neck and squeezes away the sudden tension. His tongue feels dry all the way back into his throat as he breathes it in— cloying and seductive. When he first took it, barely a man, he thought it reminded him faintly of molasses. Cookies at Wintersend. Mum kept them high on a shelf and carefully rationed them— you’ll eat yourself sick if I don’t she’d said. He snuffs softly in remembrance even as his skin grows dewy around his hairline with gathering sweat.
Nobody else in the chantry seems to notice the odor, but it’s unlikely anyone knows about the experiments. Nor would anyone be as sensitive as he is.
He wets his lips and presses onward, confident in his ability to overcome the thirst. The other week a crate of lyrium had arrived on his desk for inspection with a shattered philter. And before that there had been a scuffle over one of the last doses before a required rationing period. They’d all stared at the spilled liquid, that sublime luminescence spattered all over the rough boards of the tent floor. They’d all wanted it, but none so much as him. And he’d resisted it.
So opening the door to the Chantry’s cellar, greeted by an airborne wall of the substance that nearly knocks him back, he steps into it descends without hesitation. Duty demands it. And Rose requires it.
By the time he crosses the length of the chantry, having ducked the wrought iron pendants throwing a modicum of fire light into this damp, miserable space, his body practically vibrates with minute tremors, but he clenches his gloved hands and focuses in on the animated arguing from the cells.
“We have but one more vial. You’ve trifled it all away with your haphazardness.”
“Oh I’m sorry, should I not have attempted to apply your theories? It wasn’t mine that soaked the lyrium up like a sponge.”
“Where is your sense of precision? An ogre could do a better job with the measurements.”
The templars on guard look harried and anxious when they salute him. Alexius’s weariness is so pronounced that this endeavor seems like a worse punishment than any other they might have invented for him.
“Ah. Commander!” says Dorian. “Settle this dispute will you?”
“There is no dispute, only the lackadaisical laboratory work of an absolute novice,” says Vivienne evenly.
“We are going to need more lyrium,” drawls Alexius, his exasperation hanging on each word. Cullen never expected to sympathize with such a man, but he feels it keenly.
“More?” They were already stretching the smuggled supply line to a fraying thread and his standoff with Fiona over lyrium allocation continued without end, an impossible but necessary grind to impress upon her of the need for his templars. He hated that safeguarding the wellness of the men and women who’d followed him to the Inquisition conflicted so heavily with the task of closing the Breach. They were his duty both and prioritizing one over another stressed him beyond measure.
Tagging with no pressure! @rowanisawriter, @nirikeehan, @alistairsprayerwarrior, @crackinglamb, @about2dance, @greypetrel, @ammoniteflesh
I want to see what you're working on!

So.. we went to talk to Alexius again. My advisors poked around a bit and we agreed that the whole negotiation was a trap and Alexius wanted to kill me. We miscalculated. No one was prepared for this. Alexius wanted to erase me from the present with time magic. TIME MAGIC. I've never heard of it in my life. Fortunately, Dorian reversed the spell and by some crazy coincidence we found ourselves in the future. But in one that I will have nightmares about for a long time to come.
Like.. Red Lyrium growing from humans? I'm glad Varric didn't see it.

CONFESSION:
I played Inquisition first, and being young and inexperienced rushed through paying little heed to lore. I got sided with the mages, got to skyhold, and started judging. When it came time to judge Alexius, I picked Tranquility, figuring it was just removing the magic and making him safe, because I felt bad for him with his son. I did not expect a magical lobotomy.

Major Arcana: Emperor

Written by @oftachancer and I for the @30daysofdorian event!
Masterpost | First | Previous | Next
Vibrant hedges soared above him, reaching towards a cloud-puffed blue sky. The heat of the morning baked his skin and Dorian regretted having climbed from the long, cool pool too soon.
“I thought I’d find you out here,” Gereon Alexius called, carrying a full tray laden with fresh fruit, spiced kava, and watered wine. “Have you broken your fast yet?”
“I’m not sure that I can,” Dorian admitted, but he joined him under the shade of a canvas awning to add to the three cups of kava he’d already drunk. “My stomach’s been in knots since dawn.”
“Ah, I was much the same during my first round of debates. My father told me to imagine my opponents wearing nothing but the most ridiculous set of undergarments I could think of.” He set down his burden, then patted Dorian on his shoulder. “I spent the first five minutes of my opening laughing. Couldn’t get a word in at all. It was still good advice, though.”
“Was it?” It seemed very much like a way to fail a debate, not win one. A Pavus never failed. A failure was a weakness. And yet… and yet Alexius was accomplished. Nay, renowned. “…how so?”
“It got me out of my head.” Alexius winked, passing him a bowl of freshly cut fruit. “I still routed the poor young man in the closings. No matter what happens, you’ll learn from it and improve. And I will be exceptionally proud of you for trying.”
“For trying,” Dorian echoed with a roll of his eyes. Fresh peaches. Slices of mango. He felt nauseous even thinking about picking any up. “You don’t think I can outsmart them, is that it? Is it the little bookworm from Carastes? I read what he published about inter-ley communication spell variants. The fellow is unhinged.” Brilliant, but unhinged. Thinking you could simply connect two ends of a ley line as though they were ends of a ribbon.
“I know you can outsmart them,” Alexius corrected him gently. “But it doesn’t matter. What matters is what you think, Dorian. Do you think you can convince an audience that young Lord Maecilia and all of the other students are wrong and you’re right?”
“It doesn’t matter if I think it. I must succeed and so I will. Purpose prevails.” His father’s words, like a pulse, beating just behind his heart. His father, who wouldn’t speak to him. His father, who had looked through him as though he were invisible when he’d accompanied Gereon to the Senate the month before.
“Dorian…” Gereon sighed quietly, his hand a heavy weight on Dorian’s. “Your purpose is your own to decide. Don’t forget that.”
Contact. Pride. “What does that mean?” Dorian wondered, lifting his gaze from the bowl of fruit. It was a debate. The purpose of a debate was to win. The purpose of research was to publish. The purpose of publishing was renown. Place. Prominence. Progress. Only Alexius would not be proud of him if he- “What benefit could there be in failing you in your house?”
The man just smiled, shaking his head with another sigh. “You haven’t failed me since you set foot in it. You won’t today, either, no matter what happens.”
Dorian’s breath caught low in his throat. He needed this. This safe haven. He’d burned every bridge in his wake. He hadn’t failed Alexius, no, but that was because he’d worked endlessly, scouring the library deep into the nights, writing until his wrist ached and his fingers were permanently stained with ink. “No, sir, I won’t,” he promised solemnly.
“Livia, on the other hand, will be terribly cross with me if I don’t make sure you eat something.” Alexius folded his hands in his lap. “Do me a favor, will you?”
“Yes, of course.” The mango slipped in his fingers, melted on his tongue. Dorian felt his stomach twist and he stifled a grimace. “It’s very good, thank you.”
“That will suffice,” he chuckled, tucking into his own bowl. “Do walk me through your opinions on Maecilia’s treatise, will you? A warm up, if you will.”
The treatise. Maecilia. He could see the man’s whole lineage in his mind’s eye: drawn out like a tree on parchment, notations in the margins. Ley lines. Space like strings. “He thinks,” Dorian told him with a lifted brow. “That space follows the same fundamental laws as time. He takes every piece of evidence that exists and simply says: perhaps not. Perhaps not. Set aside what we know and just-“ He shrugged. “How the fellow has managed to stay in Carastes-“ when Dorian had not- “-bewilders.”
Alexius watched him curiously, fork in hand, sipping from his goblet occasionally. “And so you’re of the opinion that the starting point of his logic is flawed, therefore all that comes after is rubbish, too?”
“It hardly matters what comes after.” Bewilders. Why wouldn’t his father speak to him? What had he done? Why couldn’t he remember? “You can’t ride to Qarinus on a horse with no legs.”
Alexius chuckled, clinking his own glass to Dorian’s. “You’re going to do fine today, my boy. I look forward to the show.”

(might finish this might not)
Sacha hitting Alexius with the “you’re kinda far from home so nobody’d find your body if you happened to die here huh” hits so much better when he says it in Tevene.
Bonus fact! He’s smoking elfroot. I headcanon in the Circle the apprentices are often made to do chores like preparing herbs, and a lot of them make the surplus elfroot into blunts and get into the habit of smoking it. Especially if you’re an elf because in this house we believe in elfroot being elf weed superiority.
