If Uther is a good father and Ygraine is still alive...
Arthur: Father, mother, I have something to confess. I'm in love with Merlin.
Uther: [ unison ] NO, I LOST!
Ygraine & Morgana: [ unison ] YES, WE WON!
Arthur: W-What?
Ygraine: Your father now owes me and Morgana a new-
Arthur: You three were betting on this?!
Morgana: The whole kingdom is, genius. Even Merlin joined.
Arthur: But— You— How did you guys know?!
Uther: Oh please, Arthur. The last one who realized that you're head-over-heels for your manservant was you.
Arthur: ๏︿๏

i just finished "sins of the father" and like. every time that episode rips my fucking heart out, every single time, no matter what, but this time
what got me is that, during the sword fight, there are at least two separate instances where uther actually lunges instead of parrying.
uther states he does not wish to fight his son. of course, when arthur attacks, he defends his own life-- that is instinct. but uther is, arguably, as good a swordsman as arthur-- he is also the king, and knows leon was just outside the doors. within those two parameters, he had every opportunity to either defend himself until arthur's anger subsided or until he could subdue arthur by other means.
like i said, though. there are two separate instances (possibly more) where uther actively goes to strike his son.
i am not in the headspace right now to rewatch, so i don't know for certain if they were attacks meant to disarm, but i am fairly sure they were not. if i remember correctly, one of them was a true attack swing. they are not highlighted, they're super quick, but they're there.
which brings me to the knowledge-- the not surprising knowledge-- that uther would have, if he had the chance, killed his own son to preserve not only his life, but his lie.
and i know it's... a lot to compare the actions of a fictional character with ones of real people, and vice versa. but i know narcissistic abusers well. and i know the lengths they will go to preserve their own narrative-- the ones in which they are the victim, in which they are faultless, in which they are right. and, in doing so, anyone standing in their way-- including their own children-- is merely a casualty of war.
all i am saying is-- i have been on the other end of that sword. and god, it fucking hurts.

Arthur grew up around both homophobia and pride parades. As such, he's been trying to be a good ally in school while avoid being ridiculed by his father for allying.
When he finally goes to study law at the local (but like, prestige) university, he meets Merlin and his friends. Like normal students they talk about their lives at a party and Arthur mentions who his dad is and Merlin is outraged because he knows who Uther Pendragon is. During the next truth or dare, Merlin (to test Arthur), dares Arthur to kiss him.
Arthur is flustered and asks him why and Merlin says "to see if you're all talk." So they kiss and something in Arthur clicks.
It's not that it's Merlin who does it he's sure, it's just the kiss itself that irreversibly changes him. After the party, Arthur confesses to Merlin that he's confused now and if Merlin would like to help him figure out his feelings.
Merlin, medicine student and hobby fassade climber also known as Emrys on the street, and openly hater Uther Pendragon, agrees.
M: I always wanted a secret closeted boyfriend
A: you don't have to be so sarcastic
M: no no no. I'm serious. I like break and entering and to piss off homophobic dads.
A: break and- never mind
To Arthur's shock, Merlin is very good at break and entering and sometimes he just suddenly walks around in the Pendragon mansion into Arthur's room, a stolen coke from the kitchen in hand.
It would be a lie to say Arthur didn't complain. But the bickering pales because he also fell brutally in love with Merlin.

The Feral One • Epilogue
Finnick x Y/N
Series Masterlist Link
Prequel is coming in a few months! I haven’t made a Taglist yet and probably won’t start one till I’m closer to publishing. I’ll make a post tagging this series’ Taglist when I’m starting the next one.
Content Warnings - Mentions of fertility issues/miscarriage; death; the end of this series (don’t worry it’s a good ending imo)
Tumblr media
Dear Brielle,
A lot has happened in seventeen years. I’ve now lived half of my life without you, mom, and dad. I’ve been thinking about you a lot so my husband Finnick (yes that Finnick lol) said I should write you a letter of all the things I wanted to tell you but never could.
A little over ten years ago we killed President Snow. The districts rebelled and won. The war was brutal and there were times I nearly died, but Finnick pulled me through.
We got married a year later. We never really did the whole dating thing, our friendship just evolved into a beautiful romance overnight. He was there for me after you left and he has been here ever since.
The years since the war have not been easy. I’ve had bouts of seizures that leave me bedridden and ill for days. The doctors said my condition should be worse so I should be grateful. Countless medications and treatments have made slight improvements to my health but the pain will always be there.
Two years after our wedding we almost hit our breaking point. Finnick and I had been trying to start a family for over a year but nothing was working. It was the most frustrating experience of my life post-war and I do not wish those struggles on anyone.
Three years after our wedding, Mags passed of old age. Although we were sad, we were all glad she got to live out her last few years in a free Panem. Johanna decided to move in with Annie afterwards so she wouldn’t be alone. We are still neighbors to this day.
Four years after our wedding, I got pregnant, only to lose the baby a few months in due to a bad seizure. This was Finnick and I’s lowest point to date.
It’s now been a bit over 9 years since I married the love of my life and the father of my child. We were finally blessed with a baby boy, Neptune, 4 years ago today. He is everything I could have asked for in a child; rambunctious, kind, and adventurous. He looks just like his father but acts like his mother.
Two years ago, Neptune’s best friend arrived in District 4. Annie and Johanna adopted a little girl, Jodie, from District 7. Neptune and her do EVERYTHING together. Finnick keeps joking that we should build a tunnel between our two houses so the kids can hang out all the time.
All in all, it’s been a very painful 34 years of existence. Part of me is glad you didn’t have to witness what happened. The other part of me still hopes you’re out there, even though I know you aren’t. I hope that wherever you are, you’re at peace.
Love, your dear sister,
Y/N

1: Magic is a Metaphor < 2: Morgana is a Lesbian > 3: Merlin is Gay > 4: Arthur is Bi
Tumblr media
Building off of the whole metaphor idea, Morgana's character arc is basically that she starts to question her identity because she's having all of these dreams and thoughts that she doesn't understand. Then Gaius, who is straight up a conversion therapist, literally gaslights her and is like, 'no no, you're just going crazy, you're overreacting, here, why don't you take all of these drugs to suppress those thoughts?'
Meanwhile, Uther is saying all of this stuff about how sorcerers are all evil and should be killed, and Morgana will try to argue with him and he will just be like, 'well, why do you care so much?' And she's all, 'oh, no reason. I'm just an ally. I'm just really passionate about social justice.' Like, girl, we've all been there.
And then once Morgana does come to terms with her identity and she realises how fucked up the way that she was treated is, she goes batshit and starts a revolution and assassinates her dad. And good for her! I honestly think that all repressed lesbians deserve a little bit of murder, it's only fair, especially if they look so hot doing it.
Also, Morgana doesn't have any male love interests. I mean, she will sometimes flirt with men to manipulate them into doing what she wants, but it's very clear that that is what she is doing, she never actually cares about them or follows through.
Besides, Katie McGrath has never played a heterosexual in her life. She's basically straight up said that she played Morgana as a lesbian. You know where she said that? Here:
Tumblr media
Hear me out.
Are they technically half-sisters? Yes. But omg the sexual tension between these two is undeniable. You really do think that they're just going to kiss at any given moment. This has been straight up confirmed. This is a quote from the same conversation as earlier between the main producer and Katie McGrath, where they fully admit that there are definitely lesbian undertones there, and not only did both actresses play it that way, but it was written that way. So I rest my case.
Tumblr media
Gwen knew about Morgana's prophetic visions from the start and she was never scared of it or tried to deny that it was magic. Instead, she was always by Morgana's bedside (or in her bed) so she could hold her face and stroke her hair and tell her she would be okay. Gayasses.
Although, as Iori Miyazawa can attest, yuri is often best found in the absence of it. Because once Morgana accepts her identity and her magic becomes an unavoidable part of of her life rather than thoughts she could repress, she begins to push Gwen away, often in the form of telling her not to undress her anymore.
Then this tension between them is emphasised when Morgana starts having nightmares of Gwen marrying Arthur and is really upset by it for some reason. I know that she justifies it by saying that she doesn't want Gwen to take her place as queen, but if you think about that for more than 5 seconds, it makes absolutely no sense. Arthur is still going to be king regardless of who he marries, so unless Morgana is planning to follow the legend a bit too closely and marry her brother, then Gwen is absolutely not taking her place.
And yet Morgana spends the entire rest of the show obsessing over Gwen, including: planting false evidence to break up Gwen and Arthur, using necroLancey as a puppet to seduce her, kidnapping Gwen only to tenderly caress her face and force her to have dinner with her, and then of course enchanting Gwen to kill Arthur so that Morgana can be queen, and Gwen will seemingly also still be queen. And they will be two queens, together, platonically. Hmmm

People who think Morgana would miraculously have been good if Merlin told her about his magic haven’t paid attention. She has always been on the offensive and has had a vendetta. When Tom (Gwen’s dad) was killed she planned on teaming with Alvarr to Kill Uther but as soon as Uther saved her she forgave him and decided to spare him even tho she was planning on exacting revenge for Gwen.
Also when she first turned against Gwen in the beginning. That wasn’t for magic, that’s because she had a dream of Gwen being on the throne, the throne she wanted. That wasn’t for magic and she didn’t try to show gwen the good of magic she immediately tried to have her killed by taking Uther for a ride and exposing Arthur and Gwen’s date. Gwen was her best friend whose never shown prejudice against magic but as soon as she became a threat to her quest for power she planned on using her class and power against her!
TLDR: Gwen is proof on why Merlin was right in not trusting her. And she was never owed anyone’s secrets

merlin but its just him sneaking out magic users to safety in ridiculous and obvious ways
like it starts with him sneaking into the dungeons and leading them out the night before their execution but making sure he has an alibi for the night just in case (it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t tbh arthur will be there to explain how his dimwitted manservant could never pull this off)
then gradually he doesn’t even wait until it’s night (working for gaius and for arthur is hard and that doesn’t even account for his job as arthur’s secret protector - he has no time)
there’s a scene where some evil magic user tries to assassinate arthur but merlin finds out and
merlin: if i may ask, why are you trying to kill arthur
evil magic user: BECAUSE OF THE EVILS HIS FATHER HAS PLAGUED THIS LAND WITH
merlin: ah but you’re not killing his father, you’re killing arthur
evil magic user: I AM STOPPING UTHER’S BLOOD FROM CONTINUING TO POISON MORE AND MORE PEOPLE
merlin: well that’s not really fair to arthur, is it? your anger is understandable but arthur is not his father, it would be unfair to damn him for his father’s sins. instead if we show arthur that magic is not evil, he will know his father’s ways were wrong
contemplating evil magic user: how can we put our trust on a chance
merlin: arthur’s a good man, my word may mean little, but i truly know him. would you like to come up for tea and we can discuss it thoroughly and also how you should spend your energy finding other magic users so you have a community and you can all plan for a better future together
not so evil magic user: ... yes please
//
magic users who don’t have anywhere to go all get sent to hunith’s house where she helps them find their footing and sometimes they stay in ealdor and sometimes they leave but they’re safe
everyone in ealdor side-eyes the random ass people hunith’s kid keeps on sending her but ultimately dont say shit because god knows uther would just kill all of them for assisting magic or some bs and their own king isnt better
//
there is a scene where merlin sneaks a magic user out and they thank him for risking his life and merlin says “nah don’t worry i do this all the time” and then makes a note to himself to tell arthur that the security at camelot is awful (after arthur becomes king of course)
//
sometimes when all else fails merlin pretends to know whatever person is on the run and makes a big show about missing them and no way could they have magic maybe he uses his magic to block theirs or if theyre a druid cover their druid marks and yeah
//
he pretends mordred is his younger brother and no one questions it
//
arthur knows what he’s doing and corners him like “ARE YOU STUPID?? YOU’RE SO OBVIOUS MY FATHER WILL FIND OUT”
and merlin’s like “no offense but your dad aint known for being smart babe”
and arthurs like thats treason but he helps cover up for merlin anyway
//
merlin helping someone sneak out but then bringing them to arthur’s room real quick because he forgot something there
//
merlin using the residents of the castle’s stupidity and obliviousness against them
//
leon knows whats going on and he brings it up to arthur before arthur figures it out but he does it vaguely and arthur thinks its about his crush on merlin and swears leon to secrecy and leons like “aight” and helps cover for merlin too
//
arthur still doesn’t know about merlin’s magic
//
leon does though and he thinks its another thing that him and arthur have sworn to secrecy about
//
there’s now a place near ealdor where magic users can go for safety if they don’t go to hunith directly like a magic hotel thing
yeah
//
merlin accidentally and kinda purposefully at times (but mostly on accident) helps unite the magic community and that causes less people to go evil
unfortunately, it also means that people who are too far gone in their desire for revenge or just in their own evilness are more organized but merlin is strong so its okay and he doesn’t have to deal with half assed attempts made by people who don’t think they have any other choice
//
the servants all know whats up but they don’t get paid enough to deal with this shit
//
yeah thats all ive got for now

PT 3 (including finale): I convinced my dad to watch merlin with me and here’s what he has to say
pt 1
pt 2
---
“They’re loving that.”
“I don’t even wanna know what they’re doing in there.”
-When Merlin and Arthur get caught in the net booby trap
-
Arthur, to Merlin: You’re the only friend I’ve got and I couldn’t bear to lose you.
Dad: *literally gasps and gapes at me in surprise*
Merlin: Really?
Arthur: Don’t be stupid.
Dad: *laughs hysterically*
-
*uther emerges from the veil*
“Wow, of all the dead people, he got the right guy”
-
“Was that a reference to fisting?” -the horseplay scene when Arthur threatens Merlin with his fist
-
“Okay that was pretty gay.”
(I don’t even remember what he was talking about here, but he was right)
-
“Arthur’s unconscious again, alert the media.”
-
“I really don’t know what to make of Mordred.”
(whenever he said something like this I had to hold in an earth-shattering screech)
-
“Okay, this son of a bitch has to die” -About Mordred, s5e12
-
“I am OBSESSED with her.” -about Gwen after she runs someone through with a sword in s5e12
(same)
-
Arthur: “Just... hold me.”
Dad: *just nods his head*
(I think he was simply acknowledging the queerness)
-
Arthur, during That scene in s5e13: I want to say something that I’ve never said to you before.
Dad: Ohh boy.
-
His thoughts after the finale (he wrote an Official Statement for his “tumblr fandom,” including the hashtags at the end):
Well, watching Merlin was a much more satisfying experience than when my kids made me watch Glee with them. Although it was difficult at first to accept the way they bent time to accommodate Merlin and Arthur being contemporaries, I got over it because they succeeded in creating a relationship between two boys-to-men who wouldn't normally exist in each other's worlds. In actual Arthur lore, Merlin is old and wizened long before Arthur is even born. In fact, you remember in an early episode when Gaius references magic being necessary for Uther and his queen to produce a son? Well, in Arthur lore, that magic was cast by Merlin, and Merlin was present during Arthur's childhood. But ok, let's give the BBC some breathing room because they did a good job showing the generational transition from the failings of toxic masculinity (Uther's reign) to the superhuman potential of unapologetic bromance (Arthur's reign). In fact, how many times did I furrow my brow when Uther did something stupid or said something weenie just because he thought he was being strong, but he was actually being...alone. When it was Arthur's turn to do something stupid or say something weenie, he had a posse of good bros by his side to prop him up.
Even in S5E3 when Arthur gets the opportunity to see the ghost of his father and be like, "Bruh, I miss you," Uther instead treats Arthur like shit and belittles him for not being a dick to his people. Respect through fear, I believe is what the ghost Uther was preaching. But that strategy was pretty much self-defeating, given that respect through fear got Uther prematurely dead. Luckily Arthur didn't give it too much thought and decided, "Yeah, nah, I'd rather hug my droogies and marry a servant woman and be respected for doing the right thing, so biyee douchebag." In fact I'm assuming the writers created this post-mortem meeting not as merely another display of magic, but as a tangible means of showing Arthur's wrestling match with his own conscience. Even the playful and boyish banter between Arthur and Merlin (and the way they gaze at each other adoringly) is an example of Arthur's determination to part with toxic masculinity, especially when he gives Merlin the opportunity to be right sometimes without getting his chainmail hoodie in a bunch.
  This could absolutely be a lesson to voters the world over, who have the power to put real leaders in office but choose crusty old assholes instead of fresh, young minds and hearts. All the Uthers in the world are giving AOC and Sanna Marin shit for dancing. Can you believe we actually live in an era when our leaders get chided for dancing? For fucking dancing! Meanwhile AOC and Sanna Marin are attracting loyal followers in New York and Denmark, who would follow them to the ends of Camelot, while the same old self-serving ancient curmudgeons who keep getting elected are busy pulling Agravaine after Agravaine out of their bungholes. Perhaps I digress.
  Their parting from lore that is a little less acceptable is what they chose to do with Lancelot. Love triangle with Gwen and Arthur, yes, but Lancelot's BBC fate was less than satisfying. There are many tellings of how Lancelot dies, both with and because of Gwen, but the BBC opted against putting Arthur's best knight at the roundtable through most of this series. How fascinating. And weird.
Anyway, the end: Avoiding spoilers, I'd say the series ended appropriately. My 20-year-old daughter is traumatized by the ending, but I know enough about Arthur lore to know that the end is appropriate and loyal to legend. Camelot enters a new era, Merlin finally gets the respect he deserves, and a strong woman rises to power (I hope she dances). Satisfying. My parting thought: Walking away from this series, I've discovered a new career aspiration. I don't need to be king of anything, but I really want a job that allows me to say, "Ready the men, we ride at first light" without getting bullied. I mean, that's just really damn cool.
Thanks for all of your comments and responses. It's been fun.

so i made my dad watch merlin with me and the entire time it was a Trip like
he renamed kilgharrah "dwayne" for some reason
kilgharrah was his favorite character and he got very excited whenever he had a scene
"maybe you should go talk to dwayne i bet he has an answer- AYYYYE MY MAN WHATS UP DWAYNE"
he hated uther and kept calling out ways for him to be killed
"did he have sex with that troll???"
the episode where lancelot dies he was trying to figure out who dies, so i just asked who they were focusing heavily on besides merlin and arthur and he didn't believe me
"he can't die hes supposed to betray arthur!"
*shade episode happens* "oh okay sure"
"hey maybe you should just tell him you're magic...just a suggestion..." during every minor inconvenience akxjdjckajxf
"kill 'em! blow 'em up!!" constantly
"i was a dragonlord once" "how'd that go?" "pretty good, me and dwayne hung out a lot. ate some burgers"
he was all for killing kid mordred and when season 5 came around and he saw mordred and the snapshot of camlann he was very smug about it
if you want to know, his favorite knight was percival
when i said my favorite was gwaine he then pointed out my habit of liking the dumb but pretty guys and you know what. that was uncalled for.
i cannot get over him calling kilgharrah dwayne. he was fine with aithusa, but apparently "dwayne" was just a cooler name
*after finishing the series* "now just imagine if we had watched this that fateful christmas eve in 2012" "oh yeah no we wouldn't have gone to christmas dinner the grandparents would've just had to understand" FATHER

I just rewatch Merlin season 1 of Merlin.
Here are some thoughts and notes, for anyone and writers.
• Merlin was reckless with his magic and his actions. He never sits to think how stuff is going to affect everything in the future.
He made the document for Lancelot without stopping to think that if only one person from that house visit, sent a letter of was in the city his plan would be doom, and Lancelot will pay for it. Same with Gwen's dad a LEAVING A GLOWING BAG IN HER HOME. It's ok if you want to cure him, but take away the evidence!!!
• Arthur did trust Merlin, he just wanted enough evidence to bring stuff to his father (because he wouldn't listen)
• Uther was a bad king, he killed everyone that was related to magic, but at the same time he didn't. He cared more about being King (power), rather than being a good ruler.
Also, maybe Uther was a normal king, and It seems bad just because If a politician tries to be like that it would be seen as a terrible person and would damage his public image today. Kings can be bothered by that, but it's not like people can do much if they don't like Uther.
He killed the person that offered inn to a sorcerer (that didn't even know, it was a service they provided to anyone), but not the daughter of the men that was saw doing sorcery (Gwen's dad and the alchemist).... They live in the same home. Also, if you say something that he didn't like he wouldn't listen to it, he prefers to throw everyone in the dungeon rather that acknowledge that everyone else has a valid opinion) That's why Arthur did hide stuff from him. Also, It took one incident so Uther completely trusts a new medic with everything. It was so weird because even if someone is a better healer than Gaius, the old man has a lot of knowledge about the kingdom that you can't replace. wtf is wrong with Uther.
• Arthur defended magic multiple times, saying that they deserve a fair investigation/court process. Even if he thought Magic was evil, he was rational about it. He just knew what he was told, but was open when magic proved to be good
He was grateful with Will, with the orb in the cave. He was open to proceed with the test in the unicorn fiasco.
• Merlin didn't care about murder when it was the enemy, he killed multiple people in season 1 without remorse. He killed bandits like flys.
• Since the first "lucky tree" that helped Arthur in battle, he never saw that as something weird.... He always thought it was luck. My price, you're so blind and oblivious.
• Merlin was able to move stuff without words, just his intentions. I would like to believe that using spells to do the same things would need to be more efficient.
Like, less draining, or more effective, or more controlled, or more specific. It has to be a reason why he uses spells for something that he did without much effort. The only thing that I can think of as an example is when Merlin moved his boots when he was hiding in Morgana's room, he didn't drag those, he made them quietly walk towards him.
• Arthur did tell Merlin that he saw him as a friend.
• Arthur and Merlin ate rat meat, and It seems that Morgana and Gwen did too. Do with that info what your creativity wants to do.
• Uther was supposed to die on season 1. It seems that Arthur was supposed to be king not long enough after Merlin arrived at Camelot. Merlin saved his ass so many times, even when Kilgharrah told him multiple times to let it be.
• Merlin knows a spell to bring to life statues and pictures. I'm still on season 1 but I don't remember him using that spell even again....
• Morgana was just as sick as Arthur about the bullshit of Uther. Arthus train though was "I need to be better than him", and Morgana was "We need to hurry his last breath". Arthur has hope, Morgans has desperation.
• In season 1 It looked like everyone was kind of flirting with the opposite gender. Merlin was looking with idiotic eyes for every woman, everyone was pairing Morgana and Arthur to the point of jealousy. It's weird, I need to reach the point where Arthur has eyes only for Gwen and Merlin always remembers Freya.
• ALMOS EVERY CHAPTER HAS SOME SORCERER/MAGIC TRYING TO HURT UTHER/ARTHUR/MORGANA, it's not weird that Arthur bought Uther ideas, even just a little. I'm surprised he's that cool about certain situations in season 1.
I have more thoughts but it's 2 am and I'm tired.
Sorry for any errors, it's late, I'm tired, and English is my second language.

lol why is Merlin trending?
anyway guess this is a good time to let my many au’s free
1) ATLA Au (+gender flip)
{gender flipped Arthur} is Princess of the fire nation (uther is obviously ozai). Her sort of adopted (or maybe cousin? Idk) brother-not-really {gender-flipped-Morgana} speaks out against some injustice and gets burned for it. Then mysteriously disappears. Years later a runaway {Morgana} and his friend, a non-bender earth kingdom citizen who’s brother and father are off fighting in the war, (it’s Gwen) find the avatar. The avatar (Merlin) is a water bender (don’t ask why, I don’t know) and both water tribes have been decimated (the air nomads are fine. They’ve been mostly staying out of the war)
anyway redemption arcs ensue, firelord overthrowing and avatar ig happen. And Obviously merthur shenanigans.
2) The sorcerer and the sword that once-was-but-is-no-longer in the stone
Loosely based of webcomic I read (swordid I think?)
basically: sorcerer dude made Excalibur, the weapon got super Out of hand and eventually his apprentice merlin took the sword and stuck it in a rock, then gave his life to ensure it would only be used by the Worthy (no he does not know the criteria for the “Worthy” at this time but he’s trying okay). later a prince needs the sword, it gets passed around a bit more and then Eventually picked up by Arthur.
they go on adventures, stuff stuff lake, wow merlin is no longer in the sword awsome
3) Mandalorian Au (and kinda in a way a roleswap but not really)
I have no regrets or excuses fuck you
uther is a mandalorian. After ygraine is kidnapped a year after Arthur is born he kinda goes crazy searching for her (uther deadbeat dad. Wow). Uther dies, Arthur is raised by gloris . Bam there’s a Small Jedi. It’s Merlin, he and his master (gaius) got separated. Merlin and Arthur go on awsome adventures, get kidnapped, beat up slavers, and blow shit up.
they don’t see each other for another 5 years (yikes) and when they meet again Merlin is Not Okay. They go on more adventures, uncover sith plots, reveal tragic backstories (just because uther is dead doesn’t mean Merlin is safe hehe), and do stupid merthur stuff.
I have so many aus There are multiple folders in my notes app dedicated to Merlin

Camelot or Merlin?
I've been thinking a lot about The Moment of Truth (1x10) lately, and this scene popped into my head:
Tumblr media
Obviously, this is right before the battle, but I want to point something out here. Arthur says, "It's been an honor." as though he suspects they might not survive the fight, and wants to say a proper, respectful goodbye as a warrior would.
Now here's the thing: Arthur, Guinevere, and Morgana are not from Ealdor, and they are only to help Merlin. Logically speaking, it would make sense for them to leave if the battle was unwinnable.
But Arthur is not the type to run from a fight when innocents' lives are on the line. Even before the battle when training the villagers, he thinks that it can't be won, but he doesn't back out. He doesn't leave; he stays and fights with the villagers because he's Arthur, and he does not hold his own life above others. He's the opposite of the king that let Will's dad die. Will went ranting to Merlin about royalty even says, "Well, let's wait until the fighting begins and see who he sends in to die first. I guarantee you, it won't be him."
But it is him; Arthur always goes in first. It doesn't matter what part of a plan or battle he's apart of, he will always go in first and put those fighting with them above his own safety. The Curse of Cornelius Sigan (2x01) is a good example of how selfless he is. When he's cut off from his knights during the fighting, he orders them to retreat and save themselves, knowing full well that he was going to die (if Merlin hadn't been able to save him).
In the case of Ealdor's battle, he hoped they would win and he would fight, but he wasn't expecting it to work (it wouldn't have if Merlin hadn't stepped in with his magic). But he's not going to retreat, he's Arthur; he fully intends to fight until he's struck down.
This is where it gets interesting to me.
Arthur is the Crown Prince of Camelot, heir to the throne, and the commander of the Knights of Camelot. He is entirely dedicated to protecting and bettering the kingdom in any way that he can. He puts his people over everything, including his life. Arthur probably expected that when he would die, he would die in battle protecting Camelot (which he pretty much did in the end).
But he's not in Camelot. He's in a tiny village that's not even in his kingdom. Uther didn't know he was there, but if he had, he would've undoubtedly been absolutely furious, because the logical thing for Arthur to do was leave. He's the Crown Prince, the sole heir to the throne; his life is tied to the future of Camelot. There is no "rational" explanation for him to be there, and putting himself in danger.
But Arthur is completely willing to fight and die defending Ealdor. He's okay with laying down his life for these villagers that aren't even his people. Arthur (intentionally written so or not) puts the fate of Ealdor before the future of Camelot. He puts a little farming village before his entire kingdom, and why?
Because it's Merlin's home. That is how much he cares about him (regardless of interpretation their relationship).
He wasn't supposed to be there. It was possibly illegal for him to be there. Uther mentions their treaty with Cenred is gone, and that an armed force entering his kingdom for any reason would be seen as an act of war; Arthur doesn't go with any knights, but being the prince would likely be enough for Cenred to declare it as a crime.
So Arthur risks his own life, the future of Camelot should he die, and even the present state of Camelot should Cenred have found out he was there.
All for Merlin.
Of course he cares for the innocents in the village, but the only reason he actually traveled to the village in the first place was purely because of Merlin. In any other circumstance, he likely would've said the same thing about wanting to help, but not actually go.
He goes because Merlin goes. It's Merlin's home, and Merlin's leaving, and potentially isn't going to come back if he has to take care of his mother, or if he gets himself killed by the bandits.
Arthur would rather go, knowing all the risks, and die fighting to help him than stay in Camelot, even though his duty is expected to be to Camelot first. And he truly loves Camelot. It is no doubt that the kingdom matters a lot to him. Yet, Merlin's village seems to matter more, or rather Merlin himself seems to matter more.
Tumblr media
God I hate and love them so much.
How did they write such a beautiful relationship, likely without meaning to? Obviously, much of their relationship is intentional written that way, but I'm almost positive that some things, like this, happened purely by accident because they didn't think through the all of the implications of their actions.

Merlin and Arthur, further adventures in modern London
Arthur: I'm sure glad we decided to try out this movie night thing.
Merlin: (grins) Yeah, modern life sure beats the constant threats of Camelot doesn't it?
Arthur: Well Merlin, to tell you the truth, I'm not sure how I feel about that. I need to be challenged, you know?
Merlin: (snorts) Oh, I'm not enough of a challenge for you?
Arthur: (playful smile) Now Merlin, don't go starting what you can't finish. Oh, here we go! This looks like an interesting movie. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Merlin: Now Arthur, what would King Uther say?
Arthur: Well, King Uther isn't here, is he Merlin? Only one king here.
Merlin: (sighs) ...and there you go again. You're still such a prat!
Arthur: ...and you love it. Come on. Admit it!
Merlin: Maybe a little...
Arthur: A cat turning into a witch. Yep, my dad certainly would not be a fan of this movie.
Merlin: (yawns)
Arthur: Tired Merlin?
Merlin: Mmmm hm
Merlin: (closes his eyes, smiles, and starts sleeping soundly)
Arthur: (thinking) 'He seems tired. I won't wake him. He looks so peaceful asleep, and happy'
Arthur: (smiles) 'We do have a happy life here, don't we? I used to think he was so insufferable, but as roommates in this strange new modern world we're really friends'
Merlin: (yawns in his sleep, and shifts, leaning his head on Arthur's shoulder)
Arthur: (freezes)
Merlin: (eyes flutter open) (yawns) Goodness! Must have fallen asleep. I seem to have fallen on you!
Arthur: Its fine, Merlin. Go back to sleep.
Arthur doesn't tell Merlin to move.
He studies Merlin thoughtfully. Taking in this new feeling of closeness between them.
The weight of Merlin's head against him, so close to his heart. He finds his pulse accelerating.
Arthur doesn't know entirely why, but he finds his arms embracing Merlin protectively. He kisses Merlin's black hair with a soft, calculated ghost of a kiss and smiles.
Holding Merlin is what feels right, right now.
