i've said it once and i will say it again: the kindness in this show is as hated as magic. it's the parallel. it is the kindness in these characters that sets everything alight, the same fire that often follows those who use magic, haunting them. you can argue about rights and wrongs, but this is what it always ultimately comes back to. it's merlin's kindness that keeps him from blindly following fate. it's morgana's kindness that first allows her to taste that hatred, the one that's gonna settle deep within every inch of her softness. it's kindness that makes them fight and kindness that holds them back. it's the prayer and the song of the executioner. all of it, and i mean all of it, can be and is attributed to magic too. it's one in the same. it's love and it's hate. the dark and the light. the poison and the cure. it's everything.

AU but instead of Merlin banishing Kilgharrah, he turns him into a cat that looks and behaves like a disagreeable old man.

Kilgharrah spends a while sulking in Merlin’s room but then decides he might as well enjoy the freedom he has now.

And he’s an absolute menace.

He knocks things over, he scratches nobles, he’s surprisingly nice to Geoffrey in the library but he never let anyone pet him.

It takes weeks of matted fur for him to let Merlin brush him, even then Merlin has to use dragon speech to stop Kilgharrah biting him.

After he finds out that Uther is allergic to cats, he spends a good amount of his time getting cat hair all over Uther’s chambers and clothes.

He leaves Arthur dead mice after reading that cats leave gifts if they think their owner is a bad hunter and unable to provide.

He doesn’t like Gaius, so he sits on his chair before council meetings. Everyone is too afraid to move him.

But he’s also nice(?) to servants and anyone who isn’t cruel about magic. Which is why he gets along with Geoffrey.

He sees a noble he knows to be anti-magic, especially during the purge, yelling at a servant and jumps in, scratching the noble so they leave and then meowing at the servant before leaving.

If anyone else has any ideas for this, please share. I wanna hear them.

“I’m- I’m immortal?” Merlin whispers.

“Yes, young warlock” The dragon says “and you will live many life times waiting for your Once and Future King”

Merlin looks out at the lake, at the little boat slowly floating further and further away, and with it Arthur.

“I don’t want it” The warlock yells, choking down a sob “I DON’T WANT IT” he screams

“THIS WAS NOT MY DESTINY!” He cries “This.. This was not my destiny” the wavering whisper is nearly not audible.

“You told me-“ Merlin points a finger up at Kilgharrah, eyes dark with rage and sorrow “You told me my destiny was to protect him! You told me he would bring about The Golden Age of Albion!”

“Indeed I did, young Emry-“

“Don’t you dare call me that ever again!” The warlock interrupts.

“I did” Kilgharrah continues as if undisturbed “And one day you will reunite with your king, at Albions greatest need, and the Golden Age will rise”

“No” Merlin murmurs “No, I don’t want it. Let me follow him. I don’t want it. I don’t want it! I DONT WANT IT!” He begs and screams.

“I’m sorry young man, this was not how I would have intended it either.”

Merlin looks away from the dragon, trying to gain control of himself; blinking rapidly and taking deep breaths.

“You said man. But am I even that? What am I exactly?”

Kilgharrah looks down at him fondly.

“I have wondered that for a long time as well. Some would call you Emrys, I myself call you Warlock, those close to you call you Merlin, but I think, yes I think that who you truly are is Arthur’s”

“I don’t understand”

The dragon gives a sad smile.

“Yes, I don’t think Arthur did either.”
