Next month is the annual exhibitor showcase Cinemacon where movie studios tout their wares for the very anxious theater owners.
Tumblr media
It has already been announced that Sony is sitting this year out, so no info on VENOM 3: THE LAST DANCE, to be released October 25, 2024.
Tumblr media
While I assume there will be some changes to the lineup, so far it is shaping up to be:
OPENING DAY: International Day features a screening of Universal 80s series remake THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who has said in a recent interview that it is a small role) ; directed by David Leitch (BULLET TRAIN, DEADPOOL 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DAY ONE: WB pulls up with their presentation "The Big Picture". It will be the first Cinemacon for James Gunn in his position as Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DC Studios.
I expect a song and dance from Gunn about how awesome sauce the new DC film universe will be
I'll believe it when I see it.
Sure to tease SUPERMAN LEGACY which stars David Corenswet as the title character, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Tumblr media
JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUCE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MORE STUDIO OFFERINGS
Also, FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
, the supernatural horror film THE WATCHERS, directed and written by Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night
Tumblr media
, M. Night Shymalan's TRAP starring Josh Hartnett, ALTO KNIGHTS with Robert DeNiro playing a dual role.
Certainly don't expect anything to hear about THE BATMAN sequel other than it won't shoot until 2025. There has been no reason provided, but some say there isn't even a script, others say it was because there were no soundstages available in London to shoot this year.
DAY TWO: ANGEL STUDIOS - The outfit behind SOUND OF FREEDOM.
I suspect they will tease SIGHT starring Greg Kinnear and BONHOEFFER (aka GOD'S SPY) about German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, starring August Diehl, Flula Borg and Clarke Peters.
LIONSGATE: I suspect they will tease Guy Ritchie's THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE starring a pick-a-mix of men for all tastes - Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding and Hero Fiennes Tiffins
Tumblr media
; the action-thriller BOY KILLS WORLD fronted by Bill Skarsgård and costarring Sharlto Copley, Andrew Koji (who is working like mad), Famke Janssen and Isaiah Mustafa.
Tumblr media
Surely, another Bill Skarsgård film THE CROW with fka Twigs
Tumblr media
; THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1, which is the third film in the franchise - doing a bit of FAST AND THE FURIOUS mathing. It stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Guittierez and Gabriel Basso
At long last the BALLERINA has pliete into the spotlight. This JOHN WICK spinoff stars Ana De Armas, with Anjelica Huston reprising her role from JOHN WICK 2. It's direct by Len Wiseman who directed the UNDERWORLD films starring his ex-wife Kate Beckinsale.
BORDERLANDS, an action-comedy based on the game, brought to the screen by Eli Roth. Starring Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett and Édgar Ramírez, amongst others.
Tumblr media
and WHITE BIRD, which is in the same universe as the excellent children geared film WONDER. It was due to come out in 2023 but was pushed back due to the actors strike.
Tumblr media
UNIVERSAL / FOCUS FEATURES: I suspect teases for Dev Patel's directorial debut MONKEY MAN. The film was originally slated to go to Netflix but Jordan Peele, under his Monkey Paw shingle, bought it and took it to Universal so it could have a theatrical release. *Granted, Netflix does a theatrical release for most of their films in certain markets, but I get Peele's rationale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their Monsters Universe theatrical idea didn't work, but Universal has realized there is more than one way to skin a cat. They are creating a Universal Monsters themed area at their parks and their monster/horror film ABIGAIL is a re-imaging of DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. It stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens and features Angus Cloud in one of his last roles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE FALL GUY most definitely will have a place. Same with THE BIKERIDERS (with Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist, etc.), which was a 20th Century (Disney owned) Film, and even though it was the first major film out the gate ahead of Oscars/Golden Globes' FYC season with a screening and Q&A held in L.A., the studio purposely stalled the engine and towed it off their schedule. It will now be distributed by Focus Features in the U.S., and Universal, internationally.
Tumblr media
Other possible teases? DESPICABLE ME 4, TWISTERS, the standalone sequel to the 90s film TWISTERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
, horror film SPEAK NO EVIL starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis
Tumblr media
, WICKED: PART ONE and Sir Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR 2 with Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There will also be a surprise screening; studio unknown.
DAY THREE: PARAMOUNT: Expected: the mixed live-action and animated comedy IF starring Ryan Reynolds, written/directed and produced by John Krasinski.
Tumblr media
A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE, GLADIATOR 2 (though this is a co-production with Universal, so maybe Uni will tout it), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3, the unending production that is MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8,
WALT DISNEY: Possible: THE FIRST OMEN, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Tumblr media
, MOANA 2, INSIDE OUT 2, DEADPOOL 3, ALIEN: ROMULUS, CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD and SNOW WHITE.
CinemaCon always closes out with their awards (which always ties into an upcoming release. Funny how that works.
So far the honourees are:
Star of the Year - Lupita Nyong'o (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE)
Breakthrough Performer of the Year - Joseph Quinn (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE)
Tumblr media
CinemaCon Vanguard Award - Amy Poehler (INSIDE OUT 2)
Director of the Year - Shawn Levy (DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE)

Haven't seen this shared over here yet but supposedly "Booster Gold" has been cast for the new DCU and he's either going to also appear in "Superman: Legacy" or "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" before his own TV show that's in the works. Very curious who got the role as I've seen fancasts especially for Glen Powell, who would be great, or Ryan Gosling. Looking forward to finding out who it is. 😀

The Harrington Family
Demeter : Agriculture and Grain Industry
The Harrington family are an eminent force in the agriculture and grain industry that made their riches beginning as a humble grain storage business in Iowa before expanding across the Midwest and eventually launching into a full scale, complex international organization and successful competitor in global markets. First Harrington (78) has stepped down as CEO for the company as of two years ago, enjoying retirement with her husband and former socialite who graced the upper echelons of high society, First Fontana (77).
The Harrington Company is now run by the eldest son, First Harrington (51) as CEO, alongside his wife and documentary filmmaker First Harrington (50), with two children of their own. First Harrington (46) remains unmarried but actively contributes to the family legacy as a dedicated member of the Board of Directors. Taking after her father, First Nolan (44) has graced New York City’s high society as a socialite alongside her husband First Nolan (45), with two identical twin daughters to help with the family’s prestigious, perfect image.
The youngest daughter, First Harrington (39) has tried to keep herself away from the family politics and paved her own way as the Managing Editor of the New York Times, but has found herself on the front pages of her own newspaper due to the highly publicized (and some would also say quite sudden) engagement to renowned architect First Montgomery (48). At the end of the Harrington dynasty are the two youngest boys, First Harrington (36) and their adopted son, First Harrington (34) - both of whom have escaped the clutches and demands that their elder siblings face, allowing them to pave their own paths and discover what they want to do in the world.
Some may say that it is the privilege of being the youngest, but others would argue it’s because they didn’t receive as much attention and focus growing up as their siblings may have. Regardless, the Harrington family has made a lasting impression on the court of high society and seems to only be continuing the trend with the potential merger between the Harrington and Montgomery families looming on the horizon.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017): REVIEW
I am a huge fan of the original Blade Runner film (to clarify I mean the Final Cut anytime i refer to "the original"). I couldn't see this in theaters during its initial run and in some ways avoided the film because I didn't want to be potentially disappointed. The marketing at the time was (rightfully) vague and I wasn't sure if Denis Villeneuve had the chops to pull it off. But after seeing Dune in theaters in 2021 I knew I needed to finally give this one a shot but continued putting it off. My brother brought it up this week while I was visiting family and I agreed we should watch it while I was there... well, I am happy to say that I absolutely am impressed and floored by the sheer magnitude of this film and the only thing that would have made it better is to watch it on the IMAX screen it was clearly intended for.
For a film like Blade Runner to get a "legacy" sequel at all is honestly wild to me, but for it to work in the way it does is fucking insane. It pairs perfectly with the first film and doesn't try to recreate the magic of it but instead building upon what was already established while forging its own tone and pacing. Villeneuve's approach to capturing the visuals of that universe is so eloquently executed that it's hard to imagine anyone else (even Ridley Scott himself) being able to bring that universe back to life in a way that feels organic and real, especially 35 years after the fact.
The story is so fucking clever and it's inspiring to see a legacy sequel not rest on the laurels of the past but instead organically take it to an interesting place that doesn't feel forced or unwarranted. They also could have easily phoned it in, easily could have made Harrison Ford a focal point instead of letting Gosling lead the story, they could have easily just made a beat for beat remake of the original film. But they didn't. They took risks, they subverted expectation, and we got an incredibly inspired film because of that.
Gosling is phenomenal here. He's phenomenal in anything he does but his performance here is so grounded and real. He has the chops to have one on one scenes with a legend like Harrison Ford and seem comparable to him. The entire cast is brilliant and I'll even hand it to Jared Leto in that he was selling the sinister nature of his character without overselling it, which I feel can be more of a testament to Villeneuve's direction more than anything but still. Sylvia Hoeks... Ana de Armas... That is all.
My only gripe is the pacing of a few scenes just feeling a tad too slow in the moment of my first watch but I think I can chalk that up to pure anticipation with the story. Outside of that? This is a perfect sequel to a film I already love to death. Can't wait to watch them both back to back someday soon. Truly blown away and happy. Also happy that this film has somehow never been spoiled for me, I was genuinely taken aback at times and I would have been pissed if any of what I saw was spoiled for me before tonight. Bravo.
5/5

Barbie (2023) - Review
Tumblr media
Barbie is truly in every aspect an effortless, yet deeply effective film. From the production design to the humor, and from the performances to the film’s structure and direction. It is an all-accompanying, enjoyable, and fun film. I seldom think I have smiled so widely for such a long duration while watching a film without it undercutting its purpose or emotional aspects.
The film follows Barbie from her magical world of Barbie Land with all the Barbies and Kens (and Allan) to the real world as her perfect life is turned upside down. In the process she must come to terms with her legacy and who she is as an individual in world that is ultimately hardwired to be against her.
Barbie is in large part a film driven by its performances. Margot Robbie is perfect as Barbie in making her journey from naivety to independence believable, and its done with a great sense of vulnerability.
Ryan Gosling’s Ken is exceptionally hilarious. Someone said that his performance is the closest we have gotten to “fun” method acting where the character was not a deeply terrible person, and the dedication shows. He is in a profoundly symbiotic relationship with his character.
The heart of the film comes in large part from America Ferrera and the grounded reality that she brings to the world of Barbie. Her punchy monologue really drives many of the film’s points home.
The cast is absolutely stacked with an abundance of hilarious minor roles and scene stealers. Michael Cera’s Allan is flawless, despite his limited screen-time.
But the film’s success can only be attributed to the dedication of Greta Gerwig. I am impressed to see how clearly her vision has shown through despite of the film being a big departure from her usual independent films. The message of the film is clear, but never obnoxious.
It drives a bleak contrast between the real world and Barbie Land, and with Ferrera’s speech to the Barbies, it manages to deliver a poignant message of what it means to be a woman and the hardships that follow. The added humor only cements the absurdity of the situation in our real world.
The film’s take on toxic masculinity and the patriarchy is almost exclusively seen through comical ridicule, but how else would you portray such nonsensical concepts?
At the point of the Zack Snyder's Justice League joke, a dude in the audience got offended and yelled “HEY”. And overhearing him and his friends’ reaction when the film was over, I do think the film’s point went miles over their heads.
Nonetheless, this is the most fun I have had in a cinema in a long time. The energy was ecstatic, and while Barbie does have a few minor issues with a few jokes that missed and a lacking pacing in a few scenes, it really is an incredible film.

Do you think Ryan Gosling felt like a clown up there performing that song. I appreciate that they went over the top with it because that was the least they could have done, but like, idk this was one of those years where the veil of how stupid the whole concept of the academy awards is was particularly thin. Like between the mass psychosis that is the Barbie movie’s popularity and people acting like rdj deserves this legacy oscar after playing iron man for 20 years and a the fucking Cheetos movie being nominated for an award it was just kind of silly overall. And then randomly throughout the night it was like oh hi Jessica Lange. Hi Marty. Hi Al. Remember when these things were good
